Prisca Hart is an American girl with a small, mousy build. Her posture is terrible, her back is nearly always slumped, and the girl has much difficulty in looking others in the eye, especially when being spoken to. The girl is timid like a cat and this is obvious in her avoidant body language and the way she always leans away from others, or dodges their gaze. Otherwise, she is quite forgettable, her hair is nothing special, just cut short with a morose black color that only makes her appear even more meek. On a normal glance her eyes appear to be a pale blue but looking right at them would reveal the true stone grey hue of her irises.

In terms of curves, Prisca doesn't have much, her hips are narrow and her waist even more so. Her chest might be her only redeeming value, erring on the smaller side of average, but not horribly flat either. Upon a cursory glance it's common to think of her as cute, quiet, and hard to talk to, not having an approachable aura at all, unlike some other girls. Even her clothing doesn't help, preferring to robe herself in mostly black with bits of white to highlight the outfit, simple above-the-knee skirts and blouses.

"The end of days has come, as foretold by the Book of Revelations!"

That was the mantra everyone in America was lambasted with ever since the light bearers were discovered. The Catholics used light bearers in America as proof of holy powers, turning even those that refused to believe. Resources were dwindling, and the Hart family, distantly related to the main branch of the Ray family, was one of those that were against the use of light bearers in war. As light bearers were forcibly discovered and then shipped off for experimentation and training, even young children, more and more people began to try to rebel. But those in power, they saw the merit of these powers, using abilities not even guns could keep up with. This kind of advantage, why not try to press it? Japan wasn't the only one dealing with tyranny, America's Shoku was a certain man known as Roger Cross, and he held control tightly, abolishing elections under threat of the light bearers under his control.

War was most definitely brewing on the horizon. And so the higher ups decided to instill martial law to keep it's civilians under control as a response to insurgent activity in which rebels tried to attack light bearing facilities. It was kind of world where twin sisters Prisca and Essie grew up in, a harsh, frightening, and dangerous world.

First was the household issues. Essie, she was always a stunningly beautiful over achiever, charming and friendly, there was no one who didn't love her. Her shadow was Prisca, a shy quiet meek girl that while was liked, was clearly nowhere near as confident as the radiant Essie. The two girls were incredibly close throughout their lives, pledging each other as the other's most important, and with justified reason, of course. Their parents often fought - Harley Ray wanted to move to Japan and take in the newly orphaned Damian, to fulfill their duty as members of Sanctum, but Jared was always against the idea of introducing their children to the shadow war between Prometheus and Sanctum. With all the fighting, Prisca and Essie had no choice but to cling to one another for solace in their troubled younger days.

"Our sisterly love will last as long as this plastic rose lives!"

When the girls hit high school, their homeroom teacher, Patricia Burns, was impressed by their natural abilities and offered them invitations to the library school club. Needless to say, this club had nothing to do with libraries and everything to do with the spread of newly banned prohibited information, trying to teach and promote free speech and the idea of a world without war. Both girls were happy to learn and exchange these banned books with the other members of the Library Club, they felt as if this was their hope in a dangerous world where one wrong word would send black vans to your house to take you away, never to be seen again. Naturally, Essie befriended one of the more well read boys in the club, Callum Riggs, smart, clever, and darkly humorous, Prisca had a bad idea about him from the start. Yet one could say it was true love at first sight for Callum and Essie.

Life at home escalated of course with the finding that father returned home one night smelling like another woman's perfume. Harley Ray, who could no longer deal with all the troubles, decided that he was a bad influence on the house and reported him for sympathizing with the rebels. Jared Hart was taken away, never to be seen by his daughters again. A clever way to make someone disappear. So when the delinquent Callum kept trying to get Essie involved in actual vigilantism, to join the Freedom Fighters even if either sister was a light bearer, Prisca was always worried. Essie would always go to the fights, to help free the captive light bearers, and Prisca always feared that eventually, Essie would be caught, and worse, killed. And no matter how many times the sisters argued, Essie had already fallen in love with Callum, it was too late to convince her to stay away. Learning from her mother's path, Prisca decided to make her own decision, and became the snitch, ratting him out to the officials.

Needless to say, things got worse from here. Under torture, Callum revealed all about the Freedom Fighters trying to retake America and make it a democracy again, as well as the Library Club at the high school. A list of names was made, and then black vans came to take everyone away. Parents were shot trying to protect their children, a certain Hime used her influence to break Callum out and have him escape to Europe safely, but no one else managed to get away. Everyone involved was gathered in a room, and one by one they were suffocated with bags over their heads. Essie looked to Prisca before her bag was delivered, and one word was mouthed. Traitor. And naturally, Prisca was spared at the very end, allowed to live because she served her patriotic duty well. Her reward was to be made an experiment, to become an artificial light bearer to continue serving her country.

Prisca became a Martyr then, the first successful American-made light bearer. And with her new ability, she herself was turned into a child soldier, to fight for the country that stole everything away. Worst of all, she wasn't even allowed to die, the scientists all made sure that she never had the chance to end it all. This wasn't a reward at all, but a punishment, for snitching out everyone. Oddly enough, this act cemented America as a major power to stand against the New Japan's might after Emperor Ira Shoku defeated the Freedom Fighters and the HIVE. The two became the centerpieces of the war, and entire cities were turned into ruin as light bearers clashed with light bearers. In the end, the Yui of prophecy did something, breaking out of Shoku's control and in that final battle, she rained death down into the entire world, reducing everything to nothingness.

As for Prisca? Well, she found a certain girl during the final battle, going as Nemesis, one of the strongest under Shoku's power.. Prisca didn't stand a chance, she was going to join the dead very soon, keeping only a childhood keepsake, a reminder of her dead sister, the plastic rose. She was terrified yet also eager for a chance to apologize, and maybe she would have gotten it too, at least, if it wasn't for a fragment of the Goddess finding her and binding her soul to the rose in preparation for a new conflict...

|| Stand By Me|| Florence and the Machine ||

Emma blushed heavily at the mention of her bed wetting. She opened her mouth, then promptly closed it a there was no point in protesting considering it was already done. Emma shuffled into the single file line, standing right behind the other two girls. She could hear boys snickering behind her and her cheeks tinged a slight pink, but otherwise Emma was alright. She didn't want to think about the fact that Roz had just revealed Emma's deepest, darkest secret or the fact that Emma was going to have to wet the bed one night to prove true to her character. The auditorium was a very large stadium with enough seats to fit the entire military and then some. Most of the soldiers were here today and as Emma walked on the field she couldn't help but stare up in wonder. The arriving and graduating class would be sitting on the fake grass in the center, whereas the rest of the military would be filling up the seats that stood tall around them.

Emma sat down beside Irina, at least until L entered and the entire military stood, saluting. The new recruits stood out among them, awkwardly performing their best salute, a fist placed over the chest, the other hand behind you. With a sense of slight embarrassment, Emma realized she was using the wrong hands. This was, of course, the very salute that she had spent her entire childhood mocking. "It's so big," Emma had never been inside of a space quite so large in her entire life "At ease soldiers," at one they took their seats on the benches and stools. Behind L were the highest ranking officials, including the elite four. Emma gave a small wave to Sam, who made eye contact but dare not attempt to wave back. The girl looked up and watched keenly, knowing that she had to feign attention.

"Welcome to all, I would especially like to extend a hand to our new recruits, who all successfully passed the four part exam that I know brought about much anxiety in many of you." An odd chuckle had been roused from the members of the military. "Today marks a day of new and old, for where one class now joins the ranks of the active, another class begins anew. Before the year begins, I would like to allot a moment of silence to all those whose lives were lost and for their families, who are missing them now." If the auditorium had not been quiet before, it certainly was silent now. There was a thirty second span of nothing but dead silence and then L's voice boomed out over the crowd once more. "It is as a family that we put on this uniform. We share the same clothes and food, we provide assistance to our brethren who fall and can no longer stand, we never leave a soldier behind no matter what the circumstance may be. It is as family that we train, sleep, breathe, and it is as family that we will rise and bring about a new age to these desolate islands, upon which barbarians called rebels lay."

Emma's breath caught in her throat, she had since tuned out L's speech, her mind whirling until all of a sudden everyone had risen to their feet and broken out in applause. A bit late to the party, Emma stood, blinking in confusion. She clapped in what she thought was a loud and respectful manner, then followed her class towards a room marked the GALLEY, which apparently was where the food was kept. "That was an interesting start to the day," Emma said, picking up a red tray and taking a plate of food. She sat down at the table, wondering if this was more of that strange vegetable called meat.

The Opening Ceremony was most certainly exciting. Lise once again had that dark expression as she looked at the graduating class. "I should have been there." If the Senate was trying to make her go to their side, this most certainly wasn't working. L wanted to free her from the endless cycle of school, because he was like a daughter to him - but he couldn't, Lise was bound to the shackles created by the Senate. "Let's graduate together." Irina said, keeping up with appearances. "The three of us." The three girls of Group C. Lise looked as if she wanted to accept that offer but she smiled grimly again. "Even after the next few years, I still won't be allowed through." Well, it didn't matter. By the time it was time to graduate, Irina and Emma would already have betrayed them, and Lise's heart would gain another painful notch as friends turn against her.

But such things were necessary in war.

She wasn't exactly impressed by the Ceremony, even if Emma certainly was. "It's nice, huh?" Irina smiled peacefully at her supposed little sister, wondering if she would even be allowed to protect her. "I don't know if I'll be able to keep you safe here, they'll probably prefer you learn how to protect yourself instead." But if there was ever a safe way to learn to be strong, here was most certainly as close as they would get to one. They wouldn't be exposed to war unless it was an emergency, or until the school decided that their squad here was ready for it. She did the salute, copying flawlessly what Lise did, and Emma did it as well, and L made his big impassioned speech that made Irina wonder if he, too, had a side of this story worth listening to. If L wasn't evil and Jace wasn't, then didn't that mean both sides fighting each other, both misunderstanding the other, couldn't that be considered a rapidly spiraling tragedy? But was it really possible to bring Jace and L together, with all the bad blood on either side?

The Opening Ceremony was over then and Group B - to be more precise, Group B graduated and passed on the name of Group B to the new set of students, some who would drop out, others who would end up injured and be unable to continue, at least two deserting and joining the Rebels, and anyone left would graduate. Regardless of any futures, it was now time to eat some grub. "It's not that interesting, it's the same every year." Lise grinned, choosing a seat for the three of them - it seemed she didn't really have any friends, everyone she trained with already moved ahead to be real soldiers and she was left here until L could convince the Senate to let her fight on a mission. "Let's eat, let's eat, we're family, after all!"

Maybe Irina was just projecting, but didn't it seem like Lise was desperate for company, that she would completely out of place without them? But Miiko, was she really the type to be able to befriend any of the Republic, especially a member of the Elite Four? "Don't be afraid to eat, okay?" Irina offered advice to Emma just in case she needed it. "We'll need the protein if we want to stay strong once the harsh training begins. It'll be tough, but we survived the bomb, we can definitely do it." They survived Aurum, they survived rescuing Stella, there was no way a school would be able to break them!

"I-I'm not afraid to eat!" Emma said as she opened up her packet of utensils. "You know what they told me during the exam?" A rhetorical question, clearly. Emma's cheeks turned slightly pink once again, "that I was five pounds over weight." Emma was clearly not happy about this, "but I think I'll lose it quickly here," she said confidently. "Because we're going to be exercising a lot." Emma cut into her food, that strange taste of meat filling her mouth once more. Emma didn't understand it, it wasn't bad per say, but she wasn't sure if she liked it so Emma focused more on the recognizable vegetables and what looked like a rice pilaf. "Is it always like this? So tense?" Emma asked Lise, hoping that the air of tension would disintegrate eventually as it was not pleasant. "I know we can do it Irina," Emma replied, smiling just a bit.

"Hey look, it's the bed wetter and ice princess," one of the boys laughed as they passed their table. It was worthy of mentioning their lack of comment about Lise, as it was certain that they already knew of the might of the young blonde. Emma blushed and kept her face down, hoping that she wouldn't attract anymore unwanted attention to herself. "Y-yeah?" She said very quietly, "Well at least I didn't faint after running the mile! You got beat by a girl," while Emma hadn't meant for anyone to hear that, it was quite clear that the boy had. His cheeks welled red, his friend began to laugh and guided him away. While Lise was most certainly the youngest, Emma was certain that she was next. Hardly any of the boys from Emma's testing group had made it through, seeming far too young to be entering a military career.

The only ones to have been admitted were the exceptional ones. Children bored with school, with unique physical prowess that needed to be molded, or had a personal history and vendetta against the rebellion that needed to be curbed lest they go off on their own to hunt for the rebels and die trying. "I wanted to make lots of friends, but I guess most boys my age don't want to be friends with a girl..." and a supposed bed wetter to boot. Then again, as Irina had pointed out, the last bed wetting would have been a very long time ago. Emma drank her water down thirstily and placed her glass back on the tray, the lunch hour was almost up, they would be heading to the field for their first drills very soon.

"Are they going to make us clean?" Emma asked, "There was this boy at the orphanage that said before his parents died, they were in the military and they used to have to clean the toilet with their toothbrushes!" Emma made a face at that, she most certainly did not want to have to clean any toilets with the same brush that went inside of her mouth.

"You're perfect just the way you are." Irina said softly, playing with a strand of Emma's blonde hair, different from the usual pink. It almost made her look sad, muted, a wallflower version of her typical exuberant self that was never afraid to let out that restless energy within. Hopefully the exercise would be enough of an outlet for that. "For the newbies, it's tense, many of people go home crying by Friday, because they can't wait to see their parents again after this harsh first week." Lise said, picking food out of her teeth with a toothpick. "It's extra rough at first, they do it to weed out those who are unsuitable." Irina understood, that was logical. "Once people get used to this new life, things will start evening out and we'll find a new normal." That was how people were, after all.

Someone came then, one of the boys, he was obviously already intimidated by the Opening Ceremony, and right now Emma was the easiest target, as the youngest girl that wasn't Lise. Irina wanted to step in but she knew that the best way for them to back off was if Emma grew fangs of her own and fought back. That was why Lise wasn't saying anything either, waiting for Miiko to strike - and their little friend did not disappoint. "If anyone's mean to you and I'm not here, tell me, okay?" Irina smiled reassuringly, because she knew she could beat anyone here in hand-to-hand combat, except maybe Lise, who despite being twelve, was apparently incredibly strong. "That boy sitting by himself, if you wanted a friend, you could pick him. Jonah, Roz said?" Lise shrugged. Jonah was sitting all alone, being small and weak-looking, he wasn't able to gain the respect of anyone, and he sat there eating all by his lonesome. As for Emma's final question, Lise just laughed, not confirming nor denying.

They were set up in a gym of sorts, with lines on either side. Conductor Roz was there, and he was almost positively grinning here. He had a gun in his hand, it appeared to be a large rifle, and his other hand held a whistle attached to his neck by a string. "It's time for a Pacer test." Irina remembered this from school in her time, and already her legs were aching thinking about the punishment that was to come. "This is to test everyone's fitness levels as of now! Just run as hard and as fast as you can to either side before the whistle blows, if you don't make it, you're out!" There was almost evil delight in his eyes. "Everyone, warm up, you have five minutes!" Lise was already doing leg stretches and arm stretches, Irina did the same. "You too, Emma, it's easier if your muscles are prepared for it."

And then, the first whistle, it was time for hell to begin. "Run like my bullets are behind you!" Roz shouted and they all ran. Lise was pacing herself, knowing her limits and her stamina - Irina was too, being careful not to use up too much of her energy at first. Her goal was to get at least past fifteen whistles. The problem was, while her body's muscles weren't bad at all, it was a fact that as Prisca, even as a light bearer, she had low stamina, she ran out of juice fast, so she needed to be extra careful. The grueling test was on it's way and Irina felt as if in order to maintain her image as the peerless ice princess, she had a duty to the deceased Irina to be at the top of the class.

Emma stood on the other side of the line, the tension in the room so thick you could cut it with a knife. What was wrong with all of these people? It was just running, something that Emma was good at. "R-right," she blinked, copying Lise and Irina in order to stretch out her muscle. The first whistle had been blown, Emma began at a jog, wondering why everyone was so slow. She reached the line first, wondering what was supposed to be hard about that. "Is this a joke?" Emma asked underneath her breath, doing a bit more of an intense stretch now that she was a little more warmed up. The whistle blew again, it was time for the second lap, then the third, and the fourth, until finally they reached fifteen and only a handful of them were still going. Emma was rather confused about how the others were already tired, running in short bursts like this was something that came easily.

"Crazy, she's not even pacing herself," Emma heard one boy whisper to another. "Yeah, maybe she runs marathons?" The friend shook his head, "no, look how out of shape she is, she must be pushing herself."

"But she isn't even red," while they were attempting to figure out the mystery behind those that were still standing, Emma had continued in her run, panting now. It somehow occurred to Emma that she should probably stumble, or trip, to appear clumsy in the same manner her character was. So Emma faltered, tripping over air and rolling, just barely making it to the line before the whistle. That was close, she had nearly scraped by, but was panting heavily now, in slight pain with her bruised legs. "I can do it," Emma said quietly, trying to pump herself up. It was just her and Lise now, she had lost count of how many laps they had done. Lise glanced over and grinned, Emma too, sent what she hoped was a fierce look. Roz seemed rather interested, watching intently.

The two girls were evenly matched until Emma, who decided she shouldn't win because Lise was supposed to be the top in class, slowed so that Lise could win. Once she reached the finish line, Emma doubled over, panting. The room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop, then they broke into applause. "Yeah! Good job! Wow, you were so close to beating Lise! So cool!" Emma blushed at their praise, there was sweat dripping down her back and she was pretty certain she couldn't breathe. A stitch in her side made her cramp up and Emma sank to the floor, in desperate need of some water. "Alright, alright, back up cadets, give the kid some room to breathe." Roz handed her a paper cup with some water in it, Emma drank it back greedily, spilling a little on her front. "Th-thanks," she said quietly, acutely aware of how many eyes were on her.

This was bad, Emma was supposed to appear inconspicuous, not excel! From now on, Emma was going to need to be a bit more mediocre at the sports she participated in. It was just, physically, Emma was very fit if you considered all of the activities she participated in at home on Yavin. Climbing, jumping, running, boating, Emma had been doing these things practically as soon as she came out of the womb.

The pacer test, the beep test, no matter what you called it, it was a pain. In shape or not, it always ended up pushing you to the limits and you'd be on the ground, exhausted and dead by the time it was done. It was a way to punish anyone, equally, with not a care for the fitness level of any of them. Irina was going purposefully slow, timing it so that she wouldn't have to stop and wait at the line between each beep - it was easier if you did it as a continuous motion rather than starting and stopping. Roz seemed to be having quite a lot of fun with the whistle and Irina was half a mind to warn Miiko not to sprint each time... but she said nothing, figuring Emma would know what to do. She was Yavinese and lived in a jungle, this would be easy for her compared to the city folk here.

At lap six, Jonah had to bow out, he was breathing hard and panting and trying not to puke on the floor. He really was out of shape and Roz patted his shoulder with reassurance that as long as he did his best, that was all that mattered. Jonah nodded and made a few laughs under his breath. People were steadily dropping out, first a trickle, then a downpour, and Irina herself was starting to tire once they reached ten. Emma was still going strong, as did Lise, and even Cyrus was strong and proud, shaking himself like a bull would as he continued plodding. Irina's snow white hair swayed with each step, with each turn and she remained as springy as she could moving on to lap eleven.

That was when she screwed up a turn and a sharp pain erupted in the ball of her foot. Screwing up her eyes, Irina resolved to keep on running, to not lose, she needed to look good, it would be a shame otherwise to the real Irina Reisser, no doubt she wouldn't lose her composure here! But she couldn't surpass Emma in the end and at fifteen, Irina fell forward onto her face, unble to keep running any longer, the first of the three girls to bow out. At the exact same time, Cyrus fell as well and he sat himself next to her, handing her water from the fountain at the back. "Wow, you lost to your little sister." He said mockingly, and Irina grinned, wiping sweat off her brow. "I'm... better at fighting... but Emma's... tougher than she looks." Her lungs were burning and aching and greedily sucking up water and suffice to say, it stank here, everyone's sweat was ruining everything.

Finally, at around twenty-one, it was only Emma and Lise left and Emma met her end, leaving a panting, exhausted but proud Lise, as the last. "Good work, everyone, you survived the Pacer Test!" Conductor Roz shouted with an evil grin. "Everyone do one more lap to calm down your heart rates and then we'll move to the next drill!" Next drill, they still had more to do? "Y-you... were great... Emma." Irina patted her sister's back for the cool off lap, feeling like she was going to drop dead at any second. Her foot was really hurting her now, but she didn't want to ask anyone to help it because she didn't want to seem weak in front of these people.

"Thanks," Emma whispered, walking slowly alongside Irina in order to cool down. "I think I may have overdone it a little," Emma scratched her cheek, limping ever so slightly as she walked. Her legs were going to be very sore tomorrow, it had been a long time since she last ran like that. The rush of adrenaline was now fading and Emma was left exhausted. "I hope the next test isn't as hard as this one, I don't think I can do anymore running," Emma shook her head, braids bouncing. "I hope we can do classwork after," Emma had never been to a formal school, therefore she was more excited to sit in a classroom environment and learn about all of the things she had never gotten to. Of course, these would all be military related, but it would give Emma insight as to how the minds of the Republic Military worked, which would prove as valuable information to the rebellion... if Emma ever made it home.

Once more they lined up on the white line, waiting for the instructions Roz would give them. Roz blew his whistle, four very long ropes falling from the ceiling. They unfurled gracefully, swinging ever so slightly until they finally settled above bright blue mats. "For the second part of this class, you'll be climbing these ropes. At the top of each rope is a bell that you'll need to ring. Once you've rung the bell, you must let go of the rope and fall back on the mat." Roz went over to the mat, showing them the proper technique to fall and instructing them that if they fell wrong, it would be very painful. "We'll be doing this based on the last exercise, therefore the slowest ones will go first. This is a timed test people! So look alive!" All three girls ended up on the lines side by side, each one last because they had been the longest. Emma took a seat at the end of the line, her feet aching.

"It's kind of funny watching everyone fall," Miiko giggled, at least, until it was her turn. She looked back at Roz and sat down on the floor, undoing her laces. "What do you think you're doing cadet?" Roz asked, blowing his whistle. Emma stood, her shoes and socks having been peeled off. "I'm climbing the rope," she replied, somewhat confused. "You didn't say I couldn't take my shoes off," Roz considered this point, then nodded. "Fine," he turned back, retreating to his coach seat. Emma was acutely aware of the fact that people were staring at her. Her line had moved up rather quickly, she only had three tries to climb the rope. Emma grabbed the end of it and wound the bottom around her foot, beginning her climb. She was about two feet up when she slipped and fell.

The boys laughed, no doubt believing she just had been lucky. Emma needed to prove them wrong. She bit down on her lip and clambered up the rope, slowly and methodically pulling herself up until the end. With a whoop of success, Emma rang the bell and let go, screaming as she fell, hitting the mat on her butt. She shimmied off of it, her hands raw and red, but her smile wide. "I did it!"

Yes, a chance to do classwork was very much going to be a welcome change to the schedule thus far. But unfortunately for everyone here, there wasn't going to be that chance - not yet, anyways. Conductor Roz just wasn't that nice. "You impressed everyone here." Irina said with a wink. Now if Emma was every bullied she could use this as evidence that she was worthy of being here. Lise sidled in next to them and grinned. "I almost lost my crown!" She grinned wickedly. "I expected Irina to be the threat, but now I know now to overlook you either, Emma!" Lise was cheerful but she said something under her breath that Irina couldn't hear, but Emma certainly could. "Next time, don't go easy on me, I want a fair challenge against you!" The little blonde already saw them as sisters, the three of them, and Irina wondered how things would change once betrayal time came.

The last test involved working the legs cruelly, this one was for the arms it seemed, climbing up a rope was definitely an arm job. Irina wondered how she was going to do this - she never had much muscle strength in her arms, even as a light bearer, her best skill was finding out her enemy's movements and attacking them in ways they couldn't be prepared for, something like climbing, running, was not her style. Above all else, Irina, Rose, Prisca, she was a duelist, at her most deadly in a one-on-one situation. "Well, this look fun." Cyrus was in front of her, since they had tied. "I'll win this one, ice princess." Despite looking like a bully, Cyrus appeared to have nothing but respect for the three girls, acknowledging them as all strong. Maybe he wasn't as spoiled as he seemed.

"Three tries..." Eventually it was time. Cyrus went first, shimmying up the rope like a caveman with little trouble, but he fell clumsily and was in considerable pain at the bottom of the drop. Irina was still favoring her right foot - her left had the ball of cramped muscle right in the sole and it was painful just to walk. Whatever, it was time for the climb, she would do her best. How long, Irina wondered, would she be able to maintain her composure and poise, until she became a panting sweaty animal like everyone else here, and ruin her image as the princess above everyone? She climbed, her wrists were already hurting, this was not going to be fun.

The first attempt ended in failure but Irina didn't let it show, but she was deeply disappointed. It wasn't a slip and fall, it was an utter lack in arm strength, she just couldn't climb any higher than that. The second try went even worse, making it less than half way and this time she landed right on her tailbone, and it hurt an incredible amount. Not as much as torture, but it wasn't insignificant. The third time she tried, she even tried using her legs to hold her in place and rest her arms but she fell again, head first... until Conductor Roz caught her and tossed her roughly onto the ground, on her butt. "That's three." He barked, and Irina smiled, almost apologetically. At least Emma was able to do it. Lise was as well, looking almost like a monkey on the way up.

"Irina!" Emma bound over once she was wearing her shoes, "are you alright? That looked painful!" Emma winced just thinking about falling on her butt in the same manner. "You should ice that," Emma locked eyes with Lise, both of them then trailing to the leader board which Roz posted on a white board on the wall. Lise had come in first, predictably, Emma had come in third, just behind another thirteen year old who had the same time but was only on his first try. "Good job, Iri, I know you did your best. You too Lise, that was amazing," Lise sniffed, but she was smiling. "Naturally," she winked when Captain Roz blew the whistle for them to line up. "Alright, we'll be grabbing a drink by the fountain and then returning to class. If you have to use the bathroom, but it quick. We won't be waiting up for you if you're late."

"Silence in the hall," Roz reminded them, opening up the door. One by one they marched out, Emma standing in between Lise and Irina. Emma gestured towards the bathroom, she had to use the restroom very badly, having nearly peed herself while climbing. Once inside of the restroom, Emma quickly relieved herself and did her best to wash underneath her shirt in case she smelled. She jogged to get a quick drink from the fountain before entering the classroom, where most cadets were still trickling inside. "I'm back," she said, sitting down beside Irina like they had at the beginning of the day. When Roz entered, a hush fell upon those who were already inside of the classroom. Emma sat at attention, attempting to emanate the same aura as Irina, however she did not come close to being as intimidating.

"You'll be working together in groups for this one. As a means of learning more about the school, you will each be partnered up and given a clipboard. We will all head to the Hall of History. On your sheets are questions about the different displays that you will be made to answer. The team with the most points moves up in the rankings," he placed the scoreboard next to the chalkboard, showing them who was currently on top. Lise, of course, with Emma as second thanks to her having made it farther than the boy who beat her in climbing. Emma eagerly scanned for Irina's name, finding her quickly. "The losing team will be sent home." A whisper fell among them, Emma felt dread clawing at her throat. "Home?" She mouthed, wondering why they would eliminate cadets themselves. "Remember, this is not a game of speed but of ability to process information."

Roz called out names, naturally, Emma and Irina were partnered up. "Please pick up your clipboards, your time will begin as soon as you're inside the Hall of History." Emma allowed Irina to get the clipboard, falling into step beside her. "We need to win this," she said urgently, "we can't go home, not after working so hard to get here." Her hands balled into fists, Emma was not smart, but with Irina she had a fighting chance.

Irina quickly glanced for the names of everyone she recognized on the leaderboard. She refused to get help, needing to preserve the act as someone utterly untouchable no matter the circumstance. Her butt was probably badly bruised, but it would hurt the character Irina's pride to receive medical aid for that, even if it was the smart idea to do so. Lise was at the top, naturally, and Emma was second, going far beyond anyone's expectations. Cyrus was fifth, he was fourth for the Pacer Test, but then the rope climbing he was outdone by a few people. Irina failed spectacularly at the rope climbing and her score plummeted to tenth on the leaderboard. Jonah was near the bottom at twenty six but didn't even almost seem worried, making jokes about something or other, to himself. The next test was more of an intellectual matter, and one big boy raised his arm suddenly. "Hey, what does it matter about brains? Being smart won't save you in a war!" No doubt he was worried that his brain wouldn't let him win.

"In a win or die situation, simple brute force won't be enough to let you win." Irina said with a calm smile, she wasn't particularly smart, but Irina was, so she had to act superior here. "But being able to outwit and predict the opponent can win a war, even with less soldiers and supplies." She grinned, ice daggers emanating out of her eyes. "But naturally, someone like you couldn't figure that out, could you?" She took Emma by the hand then as several people glared hate at her, it was time to go to the Hall of History. "Let's go, we've got this in the bag, sister." Irina declared loudly, and they departed, clipboard in hand.

First question, what is the core tenet of the Military Academy. "We gotta find a transcript of L's opening speech." L founded this academy back when he was just an army commander, this was before he was elected into presedency, of course. The very first opening speech, it wasn't too hard to find. Irina jotted down the answer word for word. "We recognize every citizen's right to fight for their country regardless of age or gender, as long as they're mentally and physically fit and are willing, we will let them compete for the opportunity to serve with honor." Easy, of course. This was kind of like a puzzle - it wasn't immediately obvious which parts of the History would answer which question, you needed to think carefully and move about the room in an intelligent and strategic manner to make the best use of your time. Of course Lise was partnered with someone nameless, she was simply filling in all the answers, having already done this twice now.

Jonah was with Cyrus, two schoolboy enemies and rivals, but somehow they were able to set that aside in order to work on this, with Jonah finding many of the same answers Irina was. "The art of honorable war, to spare as many lives, to hurt protect the civilians, no matter which Island they come from..." One of the most valued rules of war learned here at the Military Academy. "War as a tool to free the world of the need to have war, by bringing everyone under one banner, one family, humanity working together." Honestly, just by paying attention to the question, it wasn't too hard at all to find the answer. The hardest were strategies and famous generals in specific battles in history, but even those Irina managed to find without too much effort.

"I'm sorry, I'm not very good at this," Emma said quietly, hoping that she would be able to help more, but proving to be useless. She wasn't good at practical exams, however, Emma began to notice small inconsistencies in the things that they were writing down. "Hang on a second, the battle that launched the rebellion wasn't in Tiam, it was in Everette Island," Emma knew that because she had been there. Her voice, of course, was very quiet so as not to alert the other teams. "It's a trick question," then Emma found another one of these. "The first light bearer on record after the Calamity is Stella Miya, not Terrance." Emma began to see this event for what it truly was. "This isn't just a scavenger hunt," Emma grinned, glad that she was able to help, even if it was just a little bit. "Ah, this one is a trick too." Emma shook her head, a small smile lighting up her lips. "The students that began the rebellion were Jace Miya and Varus," Athena had joined a little bit later.

Of course these were facts that Irina wouldn't be able to discern due to the fact that she did not belong in this time period. Emma giggled, glad that they were doing so well. She was also slightly upset that they were obscuring history, although Emma wasn't sure what their intentions were by doing so. "Ah, the last question! Look, we're done!" Emma happily skipped back to the classroom where Roz was waiting to check papers. There was a line about three people deep, but Emma beamed, knowing that they probably did not get the trick questions right. She was finally excelling, perhaps this school thing was not as bad as everyone made it out to be? Emma giggled once more, looking up at Irina. "We make a good team, as always." She winked, the line moving up.

The two of them presented their paper to Roz, who narrowed his eyes as he checked the answers. "Where did you copy these answers from?" Emma tilted her head to the side in a most adorable manner, clearly confused. "Copied? No, we knew them!" Emma shook her head, hoping that Roz wouldn't think they cheated. "These are facts that are not publicly publicized," Emma blushed and looked at her feet. "Well Captain Roz, with-with all do respect-" Emma's eyes welled up with tears. "O-our older brother is Sam Harris, he-he told us ab-about all of these things," Roz sighed and leaned back in his chair. "Can't penalize you, but I can penalize Sam. I'll have to have a word with that smug bastard for giving away top secret information." This was puzzling to Emma, top secret? Did that mean that the Republic was attempting to change history?

Emma looked up at Irina in concern, this was something that they were going to have to discuss. "Thank-thank you Sir," Emma gave another awkward salute and followed Irina back out of the classroom, it was now time for dinner. "What do you think that means?" She asked quietly, "why would they lie to all of the other students?" Perhaps to teach them that not everything they read was going to be true. Not to trust the source? Emma couldn't figure this mystery out for the life of her.

When they presented their answers, Irina had a bad feeling. The fact that so many truths were fake, it raised alarm bells in her head for sure. A part of her wondered if it was a trap, to trick Rebel infiltrators into putting in the correct answers that normal citizens wouldn't know. There was no way to communicate this to Emma though, not without blowing their cover. If worst came to worst, they could use Sam as a scapegoat and say he told them things. Revisionist history was one of the things the Library Club taught her about, America was knee deep in rewriting history. It was dangerous - by obfuscating history and making everyone believe a certain set of events, a lie can have the same power as an irrefutable truth. As expected, Conductor Roz hadn't wanted these answers at all. "Thank you for understanding... please don't go too hard on our brother." Irina smiled.

And then she wrote letters with her fingers, leaving no marks behind, onto Emma's hand, it was their preestablished mode of communication. By writing messages onto each other and having the other read by constructing a mental image of each letter, they could transmit messages that way. "We need to talk once the weekend comes and we're allowed back to our brother's house for a night." She wrote while walking back. They received full marks because none of their answers were technically wrong - Lise's and Jonah's groups also had everything as it should be, with everyone else messing up here and there. The leaderboard was updated - Lise was still first and so was Emma being second, Cyrus was bumped up to third, and Irina advanced as well, up to sixth. Jonah was to fifteen, safe from the threat of elimination thanks to his learning skills, it seemed.

Roz organized a set of books for them to study over the course of the next week, a book all about war strategies and tactics and everything else, something Irina wasn't sure she would be good at at all. "Because of course war isn't only about strength of body, but also strength of mind! A soldier who can't figure out what is happening on the battlefield is useless!" Cyrus rose his hand then. "But Conductor, in battle, aren't we supposed to follow our Superior's orders, no matter what?" Conductor Roz didn't even need to think about it. "Any good captain won't dismiss any good plan, no matter what rank it comes from!" That made sense. Just because a strategy came from a cadet didn't make it inherently less valid than one from a decorated and trusted adviser. Sometimes new strategies to break the mold are just what's needed.

"And that's all for your first day." He then pointed to the two lowest on the leaderboard. "You two failed to meet expectations, so now you must leave, effective immediately." There wasn't even room for protests or tears, they were kicked out of the room just like that. "Only the best can become soldiers." Conductor Roz said loud and clear. "Because we're not sending you in to die, we're sending you in to win and come back home in one piece."

Not for the first time that day a hush fell upon the group as the two student silently marched out, their tears fresh, a grim reminder of what all of the students did not want. Emma breathed a definite sigh of relief, glad that it was not her who would be taking their leave, but someone else. "Dismissed! Curfew is 0900! I expect you all to be in your bunks by then!" Emma stood, gathering her new book, a light read about war tactics and battlefield statistics. "That was intense," Emma admitted on their way out. She had received Irina's message but of course could not respond without drawing some suspicion to her actions. "I'm glad it wasn't us," Emma sighed, she had been safe in rank 2, but Emma knew she was going to fall behind once the real lessons began. She wasn't book smart, after all. From now one, Emma would have to accept whatever pallid answer the Republic wanted on every test, despite what history really said.

Emma followed Irina to the Galley, where they would be eating dinner. "Still, the first day was tough, I hope once they weed majority of us out it'll get easier." Of course Emma was not in it for the long run but for the mission, which contradicts her previous statement since technically she was in it for the long haul. "I just want to get into the military so that I can start killing rebels already," she made sure to mention, a startling statement coming from such a cute little thing. Tonight the Galley was serving what looked like noodles with mixed vegetables. Emma took a tray and sat down at the table they had earlier, which was deserted save for the three girls. "Lise, will it get any easier?" Emma asked, her tone hopeful. She hadn't expected to get any private time with Irina considering Lise's newfound attachment to the two other girls in Group B.

As of right now, the boys were still growing used to their presence and kept their distance. If there were any problems, all girls were warned, they were to report right to their Conductor and the situation would be handled, even if it meant having to sleep in a different room for a few nights, which wouldn't be good because it would mean that they would not be a cohesive team. By the third month it was expected of the boys to be used to the presence of three girls, even if two of them were underage. "I'm gonna be so sore tomorrow," Emma couldn't help but giggle. "it was fun though, I think it's the most fun I've had in a long time. I won't go easy on you again Lise," Emma twirled some spaghetti around her fork, her eyes sparkling. Perhaps too much of the mischievous Miiko was coming out, Emma was going to have to be careful.

"How are your foot and back?" Emma turned towards Irina, whom Emma had seen land some bad falls. Emma's legs would be bruised, but she was lucky that was it. "How often will we get free days? Are they only on the weekends?" Emma was not used to a rigid schedule, but getting to explore and do whatever she liked whenever she pleased. Even now it was strange to her to have to eat at an allotted time and shower at another. Of course, there were separate boys and girls times for the showers so that they would not be able to fraternize or fool around in an inappropriate manner.

They were back in the Galley now and Lise didn't even seem the slightest bit bothered by the two that left. "You two had to have noticed, right?" The little blonde was munching on her food as she spoke, she definitely didn't learn table manners. L certainly tried to teach her, but he wasn't here right now to make her into a neat eater. "The graduating class this morning, they were only eight, and there's always thirty in the beginning." Little by little, the dwindling would happen and then eventually there would only be a handful of soldiers left. "But we'll graduate together, we'll make sure it happens." It wasn't wrong to tell lies like this, was it, to get a lonely girl's hopes up? "I'd like that." Lise admitted, a tiny bit shy. "Then I could make sure you two don't die, and I'll get you both on the Elite Four!"

The boys were mostly just staying away from them, while it was easy to parrot on about gender equality, it was a whole other thing to be used to the other, and these boys - other than Jonah, who was just excluded in general - seemed to avoid them. "You're number two, I bet all the boys expected to be above you on the leaderboard." Irina smirked with pride, finding this whole thing to be humorous. "Those boys deserved that shock, beaten by two little girls." Lise sniggered and nudged Irina in the side. "For combat classes though, I've got a strange feeling you're my biggest competitor here, I'm looking forward to it, okay?" Irina already knew that she couldn't afford to go easy. "I'll fight you with all I have." Irina vowed and Lise nodded, glad for that. "Don't treat me like a child, fight me for my skill, not my age. That was Stella's mistake." If Stella hadn't gone easy on the child, she would never have had to live five years all alone from anyone she's ever known.

"It's our shower time now." Lise announced, standing up with regimented regularity. Irina grimaced, she had hoped for more time to rest her foot, even if it meant continuing to sit on her sore butt. "It hurts more than I thought it would." Irina admitted with a shrug. "Nothing I can't handle." Food was done, now was time for shower and then bed. "Well, there's the holidays, at least once a month." Lise was counting on her fingers, trying to figure out how many they had. "National Mourning Day which was actually just a whole week off..." She grinned then. "Sometimes there's sandstorm warnings so they send everyone to their homes to prepare for that too. Ever since those rebels broke the Imperial Statue over at the Sand Prison, the sandstorms are getting worse."

Showering was a problem, and immediately Irina was lost. How was she going to be able to hide her light bearing mark, and Emma too, had one on her hand, while hers was right on her tailbone. There were about twenty girls here total, each of them of varying sizes, showering, and Irina was terrified that someone would spot their marks. They would have to ask Sam if there was a way to hide them even when showering once the weekend comes. "More days off than I expected." She said with a half smile. Lise grinned. "Oh, and the school year's only ten months, then there's two months off for all the getting ready for next year stuff, that's usually when L lets me fight on the battlefield." So other than that, the Ace was forced to stay here unless there's an emergency, right? That would be good information to bring back.

"Hopefully a goodnight's rest will make it better for tomorrow," luckily there was no physical exercise the next day, only classes and what looked like workshops according to the schedule in their bunker, where the girls gathered their belongings to shower. Every outfit they were was a uniform, including their pajamas. For boys it was a white shirt and black pants, for girls a white gown. "Ah, I'm a little self conscious," Emma admitted with a blush, hiding behind Irina when they entered the steamy bathroom. "Don't worry, all the showers are curtained," the attendant informed them, "there will be no peeking," Emma sighed in slight relief, her light bearing mark would be safe for the time being. "Th-thank you," Emma headed to the last stall by the corner, gesturing to Irina to follow and take the one beside her, a bit away from where Lise had chosen her shower. "Change of plan, we'll need to go to Sam's this weekend," Emma wrote on Irina's hand, then stepped into her stall and closed the curtain.

Emma showered and rinsed, carefully keeping her hand inside of the curtain as she used the scrub provided to get the smell off of herself. They each had received a hygiene kit inside of their lockers, one that Emma utilized to its full extent. When she emerged she was wearing her glove and nightgown and had gone to brush her teeth. "Nothing like a shower," Emma smiled when she thought Irina came up to her. She jumped, realizing that it wasn't Irina but another girl. "S-sor- I-I'm sorry!" Emma squealed, blushing horribly. The other girl looked at Emma as though she were slightly crazy, but Emma only ended up backing into another girl and squealed once more, apologizing ten times over. With tears in her eyes she ran to find Irina, perhaps playing the part of Emma a bit too well.

"I-I'm so glad I found you!" Emma threw her arms around Irina, holding her tightly. "L-let's go to bed," she recalled that she had left her toothbrush by the sink so Emma went to retrieve it, glad she had managed to find her friend. By the time they reached the bunker it was nearly 0900 and Roz was stationed outside the door, taking roll call. Emma clambered up the ladder into her bed, wishing that she had brought her bitter rabbit or some reminder of home. "Goodnight," she said quietly, fighting the homesickness. Emma closed her eyes, hoping to fall asleep easily, but soon she found herself awake and listening to the snores of others. It was admittedly, a bit frustrating considering the fact that Emma wanted to sleep.

Somehow, after tossing and turning, Emma found a happy medium. She was still wearing her glove, finding it a source of comfort to know that no one could see her light bearing mark. Hopefully Irina had managed to keep her's covered in the shower and that the two of them were still incognito.

"There you are, Emma." Irina exited her shower stall, newly dressed with set sopping hair and wrapped her arms around her Caster's shoulders in a hug. This weekend, they absolutely needed to go meet up with Sam and talk to him, to find out what to do, to report whatever they knew. "Let's go to bed, and don't get lost again, okay?" Emma looked positively terrified! So the two girls returned to bed, Lise was still in the shower but she knew the way, it was fine. Before she climbed into her bunk though she grabbed Emma's wrist and scribbled letters on. "I know, it's hard to be away from home, but I'm here for you, I won't let you be alone." She wasn't a replacement for Jace, for Athena, for anyone, but she still wanted to help with the loneliness somehow.

How do you make someone disappear? How do you clean your life of an unsightly person and take back what is rightfully yours? Callum, he was a threat, he was here to ruin things between the Hart sisters, an evil conniving bastard who only existed to steal Essie away and make Prisca alone forever and ever. Essie was all she had, why couldn't he leave her alone? The next day and every day after, Mom always was full of smiles and happiness, and every picture that once included their dad was photo edited so that he was no longer in the picture, just an empty awkward space where it looked like someone was supposed to be there. He had been disappeared and neither Prisca nor Essie spoke about him, because mom's intentions were more than obvious here. He no longer existed, he had no place in their happy family memories anymore.

"This doesn't feel happy." Essie said with a heavy sigh as they were walking to school. The two sisters were more distant now than before, it was all Callum's fault, Prisca didn't do anything wrong, she was just protecting what was hers from Callum's attempts to steal her away into a dangerous rebellion! "We won't even get a funeral or anything for him, he's just gone." Prisca wasn't sure how she felt about it either - Mom wasn't crying anymore, and cheating was definitely a crime... but did that really deserve treatment like the Black Vans? "Did we do the right thing, Essie?" Prisca asked, twitching her thumbs nervously. Essie sighed, full of complex emotions. "I don't know. Mom's happier... but, I just, I don't know." It was hard to know anything anymore.

Prisca walked closer to Essie, wanting some of their old sisterly bond back, instead of just being two sisters who aren't particularly close at all. Why didn't Essie realize that Prisca didn't do anything wrong, she just didn't have a choice, she had to stop her from joining the vigilantes, it was dangerous! "Please... don't leave me, Essie. Please don't leave me alone." Essie looked at her and while there was love, there was also annoyance and she still hadn't forgiven her for that stunt that one night. "We're still sisters, okay?" Essie said quietly, looking away. "...But that doesn't mean we can't talk to other people, too." It felt like Prisca's heart was shattering but Essie didn't hear it as they kept walking to school.

The house was quiet and barren, these days no one wanted to be inside of it. There was an absence of light and laughter and love. Her parents slept and ate, but otherwise remained in a state of constant shock. Miiko, Miiko was in a state of constant guilt. It was her fault of course that Stella had gotten shot, her fault she had dropped to the ground with that shocked look on her face, a mix of pain, hurt and betrayal. If only Miiko had kept her mouth shout, if only she had been able to stop those Republic meanies from snatching up her big sister. "I'm sorry Mommy, I'm sorry Daddy," Miiko whispered to their family picture. She had packed up all of her things, believing that she alone could bring Stella back to them. "I'll do it, I'll bring her home," did Stella want to see Miiko? Was she mad at her? Miiko didn't know.

She had packed up her belongings and was now in need of a boat. Miiko entered the spiral staircase and went down, taking the tunnels to where she believed Coco was. "Can I have a boat?" The little girl asked, wearing her trusty scarf. Her hands tightened around the strap of her bag, "what do you have to offer in return?" Coco asked and Miiko held out one of her most precious belongings. He smiled and took it, "this will do nicely, here, use this one, brand new too!" Miiko slipped into the vessel and began paddling out of the cave. At this point her arm muscles were still weak, to get out of the cave and what she hoped would be the open ocean would take a lot longer than anticipated. By the time Miiko admitted that she was lost, it was dark, cold, and scary. Miiko sat alone in the boat, choking back sobs and hoping that her parents would find her.

"Mommy, Daddy! I'm scared! I'm all alone!" She had curled up on the bottom of the boat, it had since begun to rain. The wind howled, pushing the boat further into the rubble of abandoned buildings and ghosts of the past. "Someone help me!" Miiko could have sworn that there was a reply, or perhaps that was the wind? "Daddy!" Something fell, sending the boat crashing into the wall. Miiko fell out, the boat overturned. "Help!" She choked, water entering her lungs. She clawed at the boat, clinging to it with a desperate plea unsaid on her lips. "Hang on!" Someone yelled, diving in after her. They grabbed the boat, tugging it towards the shore. In the light of the moon, Miiko could see that it was Gavin.

"I've go her!" Gavin called to the Miya's, who were frantic in their search for their ten year old. "Oh Miiko! Thank the stars!" Athena swept Miiko up into her arms, holding her close. "We were so scared, what were you thinking?" Miiko blanched, knowing that it was time for an explanation. "I-I was going to bring Stella home," she whispered, her voice slightly hoarse from yelling. Jace caught up, torch in hand. "Miiko! He ran forward, the four of them taking shelter underneath a half broken awning. "Come on, let's go home, you can explain after a warm bowl of soup."

What Prisca needed was a bit of magic, some witchcraft and sorcery in order to create a perfect happy ending for herself. Clutching the plastic black rose to her chest, she hopped out from the bush, magic would give her strength, magic would give her the bravery to do what needed to be done. If Essie ever asked how he disappeared, Prisca would call it magic, it's not like she did it, it was magic! The switchblade was sharp but Callum was faster and he grabbed her wrist. It was the middle of class, he came out for a smoke, and Prisca was waiting, having memorized his pattern, and she attacked. "The hell are you doing." Callum glared hard at her - none of that idle curiosity he had before. "This is dangerous, you're insane." Prisca growled, she tried to stab again but he was a vigilante that fought against the American Government and she was just a normal girl, there was no way she could win.

"I have to! I have to, or you'll make Essie into one of you, you'll make her go off and-" He clasped a hand around her mouth to shut her up, because if anyone found out, it was game over for the resistance. "Unless you want me to kiss you to shut you up, stop talking." Prisca bit and forced his hand off. "Essie can't get involved with that dangerous stuff." Her stone grey eyes were almost glowing with hatred. "She just needs to stay with me, safe and happy, we just need you gone!" She tried stabbing again but Callum was faster and he pulled the blade out of her hands and pocketed it with little effort. "Don't try this again, not unless you want me to show this evidence to Essie." Callum glared hotly at his enemy - he once wanted to help break her shell, to make her a friend... but that was impossible now. "She won't forgive you." Prisca needed stronger magic, she needed more drastic measures in order to protect the happy world she and Essie had for so long now.

This unsightly monster needed to disappear...

Was it really okay to call this morning? The wake up bell was loud and blaring, there was no way anyone could sleep through this unless you were deaf, in which case you wouldn't be hear anyways. Or if you were a Spirit. Irina and Emma had a plan of course, the bed was filled with pillows and of course, her own white pajama dress, they would wake up ten minutes before the wake up alarm at 0500 to summon her and then pretend to be asleep. This plan was risky but it was the best they had until they could contact Jellyfish at Sam's house this weekend. "Good morning..." Irina groaned, already wearing her white gown. "I'm ready for a good day today."

It hurt to remember just how awful she was in her past, even now, even if she still hated Callum, the truth was that she really was the villain then. She should have just - there were so many different things she could have done, and yet she shut off her future and chose the wrong thing. Today was learning and memorizing the Soldier Handbook, guidelines of war, and of course, the Capitol City Code of Conduct, on how to fight with honor and humanity. But remembering how some soldiers had tried to violate them in Contralto, Irina couldn't help but wonder how much the lesson actually stuck.

When Emma awoke at this ungodly hour of dawn, her hair was a mess, sticking up with a cowlick in every angle one could imagine. "Morning," Emma whispered, rubbing her eyes tiredly. The day consisted of intense training, uniform sizing, battle tactics, learning how to interrogate someone and at long last, dinner. "I'm pooped," Emma sighed, leaning against the table. She had been extra careful today to not give anything away and not correct Captain Roz when she believed him to be wrong about a fact or two in history. It was rather irksome that they made out the rebels to be some sort of uncaring monsters with a martyr complex. "I'm so sore, I don't think I can do gym again tomorrow," but the day was not over yet. Just when they expected to have shower time, the Conductors burst into the dining hall, barring them all from leaving.

"We are about to have our first Group tournament!" Conductor Roz grinned, placing his hands on his hips. Most of the cadets cheered, however those in Group B were left out of the ring and therefore had no idea what the cadets were cheering about. "IN half an hour, all groups will report to their Conductors for further instructions. In the meantime, however, tonight's game will be...." there was a drum roll during the pause. "Capture the flag!" Capture the flag? What was that? Emma turned curiously as they explained the game. "We will be pitching the four Group's against one another. Each time will receive a flag that they must hide and guard, with a safe circle for the other team to step into once in enemy territory. If you get caught by the enemy you are taken to jail, if you are in jail, you cannot leave until someone from your team comes to save you, or a Jailbreak is announced. Jailbreaks only happen twice in the game."

"We will play over a span of one hour. At the end of the hour, the Group with the most flags will be announced the winner. Please enjoy the rest of the meal, we look forward to conducting this test." Emma turned towards Lise and Irina, her stomach bubbling with both nerves and excitement. "Have you ever played this before?" She asked both girls, finishing up her slice of cake easily. They were having their first physical exam at the end of the month, where they would be evaluated to see if they had gained, lost, or grown in any way, shape, or form. Emma was eager to know whether she had lost some weight, she had been staying away from cake, but had decided to treat herself after a hard day at class. "This sounds like it'll be so much fun!" Emma giggled, chugging her water so that she was hydrated enough.

"Whoa, slow down there, there's still half an hour until we need to report to the classroom." Together as a class they would decide where to hide their flag and would get a bit of extra time since they were new to the Group Games. "The Group Games have tiers, the winners receive prizes and those who did exceptional jobs are rewarded." Lise explained to them, "I usually win something or other, it's not a big deal."

It was now time for the strategy meeting to decide on how they would go for the Capture the Flag operation. All twenty-eight classmates gathered in the classroom to discuss what they were going to do. This was without any guidance from their Conductor, naturally. "We're the youngest Group here, since we're all first years, so don't expect much." Cyrus was quick to point out with a realistic outlook, of course. "We'll probably lose against the older, smarter, stronger Groups." It really did seem like a stacked deck, didn't it? Jonah was giggling already though as he pointed to the three girls who had by far proven themselves to be the most talented here. "We have the Three Princesses of Group B!" It was their nickname because the three of them excelled greatly in almost everything they did, the top of the class by a longshot. "If we make a strategy based on supporting them, we might stand a chance!"

It made sense, really. The trump card Group B had was, naturally, the Three Princesses, Lise Windsor, Irina Reisser, and Emma White. Lise was the Ace, one of the Elite Four, she was nigh unbeatable and was quick-minded to boot. Then there was Irina, who had proven herself as incredibly dangerous in any one-on-one situation, able to fight with the best of them, a duelist at heart. And then there was Emma, who was as fast and as agile as a monkey - when she really tried, no one would be able to catch up with her. "I'm not an idea person, so please, go on, Jonah." Lise said loudly when several members of the class were trying to talk down to Jonah about how he was useless and shouldn't be talking. He wasn't respected, but when Lise put in her support, everyone was forced to listen.

"Emma should be in charge of the flag." Jonah said first, holding a finger up. "With twelve of the guys supporting her on the defense. We'll all be pretending to have conversations with Emma, and we'll make sure everyone knows Emma's the one with the flag." Where Jonah lacked in physical abilities, he made up for in brains. "If everyone's pretending to talk to her, the enemies won't know where she is and they'll be easy to bait and trap!" He giggled as if that was funny to him. "I'll be your backup, Emma!" Next he turned to Lise. "You and eleven guys will be the attack team, since you're fast and have the most combat experience, you should take the lead in getting flags." Lise nodded, grinning.

That left two, Irina and Cyrus, to be assigned. "Lastly are you two, since you're both strong at fights, but not at leading, you two will work together to hunt down and distract key targets and threats on other teams." So they would play disruption, running behind enemy lines to mess up with their plans and make it harder for them to attack Lise or Emma's teams."Sounds exciting." She grinned, and Cyrus nodded, looking forward to fighting alongside the Ice Princess. "I even have a list of big names and faces to target, so you two will know who to go for!" A strategy in three parts - Lise, the flag taker, Emma, the flagbearer, and Irina, the decoy.

Emma stood in the strategy room, the meeting something that was a bit over her head. You see, she wasn't smart, but what she lacked in brains she made up for in agility and speed. Therefore, instead of tying their flag to a bush or hiding it underneath a rock in the traditional fashion, Emma was going to be the flag itself. "Question!" Emma squeaked, raising her hand in the air. "I-if I'm the flag, doesn't that mean I have to stay within the circle?" Which meant that Emma was a sitting duck if anyone came to try and take the flag from her. "Um, what if we hide the flag in a river?" Emma inquired, "I don't think that anyone would try looking for it underwater and since it's dark it would be harder to see."

Ignoring the two boys on Lise's attack team grumbling about how the nerd is pretending he's cool and in charge, Jonah responded to Emma's query enthusiastically. "No, you're in charge of the flag, but you aren't the flag itself!" He explained with a grin, nudging his glasses back up his face, eyes almost shining with enthusiasm. "You hide and jump at anyone who tries to take it!" It was a little impressive how Jonah was able to figure out peoples strengths and skills in only a few days - maybe he was more suited for a management role in the military than an actual cadet on the front lines. "There's no rule against that, is there?" Jonah took out a map he bartered from someone else of the jungle arena, drawing out their territory. "Our river area has plenty of openings, so if the flag is there, there's lots of places to attack from." Jonah mused quietly, thinking. "But it would make it heavier, so it's easier for you to catch the thief..."

Someone then punched Jonah across the cheek, glaring. "Stop ordering us around, you're not even able to do ten pushups." He grunted angrily, feeling as though the scrawny boy didn't deserve to be here, didn't deserve any respect. "You should just shut up and let the stronger people do this however we want!"

"Hey that's not nice!" Emma jumped off of the desk she was sitting on, sizing the bigger kid up. She blushed and looked at the floor, suddenly shy once more. "I-I mean, you shouldn't-you shouldn't hurt people!" She balled her hands into fists, "You're just jealous because you're brain doesn't work as well!" The much bigger boy narrowed his eyes and leaned down, Emma squeaked and took a step back. "What did you say short stuff?" Emma took another step back, "thought so." He shoved her against one of the desks that had been pushed to the wall. "The strongest people in the group should be the ones to make the plans!" He said, raising a fist, "who's with me?" Not a sound came from any cadet, they did not approve of this bully's methods. "As you were saying Jonah," Lise spoke calmly, stepping in between the two. She sent a furious glare up at the tall, bustling boy, who shrunk back in realization that if he had no backers, it would be much harder to coerce other cadets.

Irina patted Emma's head protectively, smiling daggers at the bully. "Are you hard of hearing? She said you're jealous, but I guess you're deaf too." And with Lise's rebuttal, the tall boy was more or less forced to step down, with no support behind him. Cyrus scoffed at the brute, unimpressed. "I don't like you either, Jonah, but we should save the violence for the Rebels." Jonah rubbed his cheek and sat down in his chair, seemingly not even the slightest bit put off by being punched, as if he was used to it. "There's a cave, let's set up the jail here, since there's only one way in or out, so it's easy for the warden to stop rescuers!" Jonah was excited, because this was something he excelled at. "Emma, you can set yourself up at the trees by the riverbank and jump down to keep the flag safe!" It was all coming to order, Irina locked eyes with Cyrus and smirked, he better prove to be reliable, or she'd just strike out on her own.

Emma nodded, she was growing excited, "I-I can do it, I think," Irina patted her head supportively, make Emma beam. The plans were being finalized, they now had time to prepare themselves. "We should all put on dark colored clothing since it's night outside," therefore it would be harder to see them if they were all wearing black. Group B made a break for the dorm, it mattered not where they went as long as they met on the field in ten minutes for the beginning of the game. Emma went through her clothes, pulling out a black pair of pants and a black shirt. She changed the same way she usually did, by hiding behind Irina out of embarrassment for her small, but out of shape figure. "Ready?" Emma asked once she had changed, excited for the game to begin.

Group B were all set up according to Jonah's directions on the map. Emma, in charge of the defense team, had her people scattered around their jungle area in groups of two, always engaged in conversation and miming that Emma was chatting with them. Lise's men were at the front lines, ready to strike at their first target, Group C's flag, the oldest current group and the least likely to expect an attack from the fresh blood that was Group B. Of course their job was to spread rumors that Emma was the flag bearer. Lastly was Irina's squad of her and Cyrus, their job was to run around as a duo in enemy territory to disrupt the enemy defensense, as well as act as rescuers in case Lise's team ever needed it. "We're going to do well." Irina said boldly to Emma. The war gong rung three times, to signify the start of the game. "You know what to do if you need me, sister." And with that, Irina set off with Cyrus to play distraction.

Emma walked alongside Irina onto the field. "Our team territory is this way!" Cyrus called, leading them towards the outcropping where on a slight decline was their team base. "It's downhill, which means we have a slilght advantage and disadvantage. It'll be easy to run down, but hard to run up, especially wet." Emma beamed, spotting the river. She sloshed into the water, wading about waste high in order to find the perfect hiding space. Once determined, Emma found the best tree and pulled herself into it, laying in wait as though she were a cat on her pedestal, waiting for just the right moment to strike. "I'm ready!" Emma said, wondering if she was actually supposed to talk or simply remain quiet and allow the others to maintain the illusion that they were actually speaking to her. She should have clarified that prior to getting in the tree. It was too late now, however, the war gong was being rung, the game had begun. "Good luck Iri," Emma smiled, giving her a thumbs up from her position in the tree.

The war gong rang, and Cyrus and Irina dashed off to play distraction. According to Jonah's predictions, Group A would be focusing their sights on Group B, considering them the weak fish to prey upon and steal flags from. D was likely to play defense until a healthy amount of people from the other sides were in jail, and then commit their forces to steal flags with their large army - they would be a problem, naturally. C's plan was, in conjunction, probably to be putting their entire group to attack Group D's defensive fortress in order to force them to adapt their plans. After all, C's fortress strategy won them last year, and this year they were apt to do it again. "Let's hang out around the middle area first." Cyrus suggested, before they did anything hasty. "So we can get an idea as to what the other Groups are doing.

Since there were less members the older the group, it made things a bit more fair over all. C had the smallest population, since as the oldest, a lot of them had already dropped out. And then D had the second smallest, and conversely, second most skilled, and then was A, and lastly, B's were the weakest but most numerous. If the numbers were the same each time, of course it wouldn't be a fair competition! "Sure, let's go." Lise was probably already spearheading the charge into C, making it a sort of truce with D to break down the fortress, since they were doing the same. They dashed through the jungle, acting as scouts to relay information back to Jonah so he would know what to expect. "Hey, Irina." Cyrus looked at her clearly. "When I first enlisted, as the oldest son of my family, I expected to be the best."

It made sense. Cyrus was good at fighting, he had a decent head on his shoulders, he was definitely in shape, he seemed like a good firstborn for sure. "But then I met three girls that utterly trounced me no matter what I did." He laughed dryly, he of course knew that Irina had gone easy with him during the sparring contest. "It was humbling, I feel like I can improve in lots of ways." He grinned like a rival should. "And I'll beat you one day, even if you're a girl!" That's good, that was the right way to do it. Hopefully Jonah and Cyrus would both be swayed to the Rebellion, Irina didn't want to have to kill them in the end. "Do your best, I'm looking forward to the rematch." The ice princess said, reaching the middle area where all four territories intersected.

The jungle was indoors so it wasn't as hot as it could be, an artificial cool wind blowing through. How the technology was made to create this biome was unsure, but it was very much a marvel of humanity's genius - or maybe Nino's, if she had her hand in this. "I see movement." Irina said, pointing. Surprisingly, it was all as Jonah predicted, as if he was a prophet of strategy. That meant Group A was on the march. "We should protect the front for now, just in case. If we need it, we can go to rescue anyone Lise lost on the Group C front." Irina flipped her snow white hair, ready for action.

Emma remained quite hidden within her tree, lying in wait for any soul that dare to step into that river. She was sopping and the breeze was slightly cold, but Emma was looking forward to getting to take down her first opponent. They would allow no one through, not with the way they were positioned, Emma was basically the back up. She had a slight feeling that Jonah had put her in this position to get her out of the way, but then again, she also believed that he was playing upon the fact that her greatest strength was her ability to run. "We can do this," Emma whispered, knowing that they were relying on her to protect the flag. The first quarry came, huffing and puffing he reached the base of the river. Emma shimmied higher up into the tree, positioning herself right above him. She waited until he was momentarily distracted to leap, landing right behind him. "Got you!" She giggled, touching the back of his shirt.

"What?! Where did you come from!?" Emma giggled, not answering, "take him away boys!" She said, waiting for the enemy to disappear before clambering back up into her tree and re-positioning herself so that she was both hidden and comfortable. "Good job Emma!" One of the boys said, a new chatter starting up about Emma's job well done. She beamed, her cheeks turning pink which made Emma glad that she was hidden within the tree. "I just want to help," Emma was glad that at least here she was more useful than she had ever been at home. Here they praised her, they helped her, they included her. Emma felt strange, she was not supposed to like these people and yet, here she was, finding herself building connections that she would later on have to break up or turn against. It made her sad to think that in the future, unless she could turn them all into rebels, she would have to fight these faces in battle.

"We're sorry we underestimated you!" Came a cry and Emma almost giggled. She was almost always underestimated, that was what made her job so great. She got to undermine them, prove that she was experienced in at least some ways. Emma was always careful not to do too well or show off, she didn't need people suspecting her or the glove she wore on her hand. When people asked about it, Emma simply said she sometimes needed extra wrist support after the fire, that the rain or wind or something bothered the joints, but in truth it was because of the light bearing mark that allowed Emma to summon things when she needed them, like the trusty black rose that was now hidden at Sam's house. Emma hadn't told Sam she was leaving it, she had simply hidden it in a place no one would think to look.

Another was coming, once more the opponent looked around puzzled while Emma shimmied up and jumped down from the tree, tagging the enemy in the back. From at the top of the hill in which their territory was mapped out, it was impossible to see Emma who was so carefully hidden up within the branches and leaves the tree.

"There's only two of them, and we're older and more experienced!" This was the chatter at the border between Group B and Group A, who was targeting them as per Jonah's expectations. "One of them's a girl, so we'll be fine! Let's full charge!" Cyrus and Irina grinned, which put them off, usually newbies were nervous in their first Group Competition, weren't they? So why were these two so confident, it's not like they could have a traps set up or anything, they didn't learn about traps and bait in war strategy yet, that wasn't in the curriculum for them to have learned by now! "There's only two, we can rush past them, no problem!" And so a squad of seven, Group A's attack team, struck, dashing into Group B's territory. It was time to begin the hunt, wasn't it?

If Miiko had the rose in her hands, Irina could use her rapier and her light-bearing-gift, her ability to predict the enemy's movements would be useful here. But like Cyrus she probably wouldn't need it, not against these overconfident buffoons. She fought against Nemesis, the most powerful light bearer of her time, there was no way she could lose against this riffraff. "Well, let's go get them, what say we take out five so there's only two for Jonah's defense squad to take up?" Irina and Cyrus sprinted through the jungle to catch them, their territory which they memorized like the back of their hands, while Group A was unfamiliar, it was a cinch to catch up to them in home land. "Round em up, let's keep going." Cyrus snorted. "Just because we're in a younger group, you shouldn't underestimate us." He sure had the pompousness of a senator's son.

"You know, about Jonah..." They were going to disrupt Group C now, to lead enemies on a wild goose chase and try to trick them over the border to catch them - and maybe if necessary, they should go and help Lise's group by breaking whoever was caught out of jail. "He's being bullied. It's really stupid." Irina frowned, this was odd to hear about. "Why do you care? Weren't you one of his bullies from school?" Jonah told her already, about how Cyrus had some goons, how they always tormented him for being so small and weak, for not being like the other boys who liked girls, who played sports, he was different, and it made the other boys uncomfortable. "If we're supposed to be a squad, a family, I have to put it past him." Cyrus explained with more professionalism than he could have thought. "A family's supposed to work together, not pick on each other."

"But he doesn't really care about being harassed like that." Irina recalled how used to it he was, Jonah was completely fine, even after being punched square across the face. "It's for Emma." Cyrus muttered, shaking his head. "The worst of it happens in the boy's showers, they strip him and mock him - he says he's fine with it, because every group has a bullied kid. As long as he can put up with it, he can protect the next bullied kid on the list, and a few guys are humiliated because a little girl like Emma is better." Of course it was to be expected to lose to Lise, but Emma wasn't an Elite Four, so they hoped to at least beat her. Naturally, they couldn't, she was amazing, doing better than even Irina. Well, once the combat training began, Irina knew that's where she would begin to shine.

Emma darted underneath one of her team mates, catching her opponent in the back. They had yet to discover the flag, which was still within the water. Emma was growing excited, Lise had managed to bring them a flag, so now there were two in the hiding spot. Of course the game was not over, there was still a chance it could be taken but Emma doubted anyone would find them if they hadn't so far. "Another one?" Emma clambered back into the hiding spot quickly. She was still freezing, soaked, and shivering, but was doing her best to be quiet. "I'm surprised," one of the teammates admitted, "that we're doing so well considering we have a major disadvantage," the other one grunted in agreement. "I'm surprised Emma hasn't wimped out on us, kids don't belong here, you've seen her most days. Quaking so hard she looks like she's going to pee herself," the one laughed. If they were trying to speak quietly it wasn't working, Emma blushed furiously. Miiko would never stand for this, but right now she wasn't Miiko.

"I can hear you," Emma whispered. Another conversation caught her interest, her ears perking up in delight. "I'm thinking of defecting," someone whispered. Emma looked around, spotting the speaker. "I've been thinking a lot about it, doing research. They're feeding us lies here, we're fighting for the wrong side." The other teammate nodded in consolation. "I'm beginning to think the same thing. Hey, what if we leave for break and don't come back? Let's get ourselves a boat and go to Ondern." Emma wanted to scream with delight and encouragement, but she stayed down. This could be a trap, two students placed within them to find out if there were rebels among them. For now it was best to stay quiet, to remain hidden. She tugged on her glove, nearly missing the opponent that had arrived. Emma needn't leave her tree, she swung so that she was upside down and quickly tagged their back, disappearing just as easily as she had arrived.

Another teammate took credit, snickering all the while. "Hey Emma!" One of her teammates called, holding up the illusion that they were all talking to her. "Has anyone ever told you, you're adorable?" Adorable? Emma did her best not to squeak. As Miiko yes, she had been told she was adorable many times, but never as Emma. "Yeah, kind of looks like my little sister, makes me feel all protective when I see her struggling," another teammate agreed. "Can't get like that though," said a third, "she is a Princess of Group B." They were acknowledging her strength and the fact that she belonged here! Emma could not be happier! She jumped down, nearly tackling an opponent. "Where did you come from?!" He asked, aghast and Emma smiled and winked, "a secret," she panted, waiting until he was out of sight before darting back into her hiding place.

"Half an hour to go!" Came a voice. If Lise returned with a third flag, all they would have to do is protect their piece of land until the end of the game. It would be easy, a fools errand with their entire team. Three out of four flags would be the majority, four flags would be a miracle. "We can do it," Emma whispered, her foot nearly slipping. She moved further up to keep herself from hitting her head and grinned a Cheshire like grin.
