Prisca Hart is an American girl with a small, mousy build. Her posture is terrible, her back is nearly always slumped, and the girl has much difficulty in looking others in the eye, especially when being spoken to. The girl is timid like a cat and this is obvious in her avoidant body language and the way she always leans away from others, or dodges their gaze. Otherwise, she is quite forgettable, her hair is nothing special, just cut short with a morose black color that only makes her appear even more meek. On a normal glance her eyes appear to be a pale blue but looking right at them would reveal the true stone grey hue of her irises.

In terms of curves, Prisca doesn't have much, her hips are narrow and her waist even more so. Her chest might be her only redeeming value, erring on the smaller side of average, but not horribly flat either. Upon a cursory glance it's common to think of her as cute, quiet, and hard to talk to, not having an approachable aura at all, unlike some other girls. Even her clothing doesn't help, preferring to robe herself in mostly black with bits of white to highlight the outfit, simple above-the-knee skirts and blouses.

"The end of days has come, as foretold by the Book of Revelations!"

That was the mantra everyone in America was lambasted with ever since the light bearers were discovered. The Catholics used light bearers in America as proof of holy powers, turning even those that refused to believe. Resources were dwindling, and the Hart family, distantly related to the main branch of the Ray family, was one of those that were against the use of light bearers in war. As light bearers were forcibly discovered and then shipped off for experimentation and training, even young children, more and more people began to try to rebel. But those in power, they saw the merit of these powers, using abilities not even guns could keep up with. This kind of advantage, why not try to press it? Japan wasn't the only one dealing with tyranny, America's Shoku was a certain man known as Roger Cross, and he held control tightly, abolishing elections under threat of the light bearers under his control.

War was most definitely brewing on the horizon. And so the higher ups decided to instill martial law to keep it's civilians under control as a response to insurgent activity in which rebels tried to attack light bearing facilities. It was kind of world where twin sisters Prisca and Essie grew up in, a harsh, frightening, and dangerous world.

First was the household issues. Essie, she was always a stunningly beautiful over achiever, charming and friendly, there was no one who didn't love her. Her shadow was Prisca, a shy quiet meek girl that while was liked, was clearly nowhere near as confident as the radiant Essie. The two girls were incredibly close throughout their lives, pledging each other as the other's most important, and with justified reason, of course. Their parents often fought - Harley Ray wanted to move to Japan and take in the newly orphaned Damian, to fulfill their duty as members of Sanctum, but Jared was always against the idea of introducing their children to the shadow war between Prometheus and Sanctum. With all the fighting, Prisca and Essie had no choice but to cling to one another for solace in their troubled younger days.

"Our sisterly love will last as long as this plastic rose lives!"

When the girls hit high school, their homeroom teacher, Patricia Burns, was impressed by their natural abilities and offered them invitations to the library school club. Needless to say, this club had nothing to do with libraries and everything to do with the spread of newly banned prohibited information, trying to teach and promote free speech and the idea of a world without war. Both girls were happy to learn and exchange these banned books with the other members of the Library Club, they felt as if this was their hope in a dangerous world where one wrong word would send black vans to your house to take you away, never to be seen again. Naturally, Essie befriended one of the more well read boys in the club, Callum Riggs, smart, clever, and darkly humorous, Prisca had a bad idea about him from the start. Yet one could say it was true love at first sight for Callum and Essie.

Life at home escalated of course with the finding that father returned home one night smelling like another woman's perfume. Harley Ray, who could no longer deal with all the troubles, decided that he was a bad influence on the house and reported him for sympathizing with the rebels. Jared Hart was taken away, never to be seen by his daughters again. A clever way to make someone disappear. So when the delinquent Callum kept trying to get Essie involved in actual vigilantism, to join the Freedom Fighters even if either sister was a light bearer, Prisca was always worried. Essie would always go to the fights, to help free the captive light bearers, and Prisca always feared that eventually, Essie would be caught, and worse, killed. And no matter how many times the sisters argued, Essie had already fallen in love with Callum, it was too late to convince her to stay away. Learning from her mother's path, Prisca decided to make her own decision, and became the snitch, ratting him out to the officials.

Needless to say, things got worse from here. Under torture, Callum revealed all about the Freedom Fighters trying to retake America and make it a democracy again, as well as the Library Club at the high school. A list of names was made, and then black vans came to take everyone away. Parents were shot trying to protect their children, a certain Hime used her influence to break Callum out and have him escape to Europe safely, but no one else managed to get away. Everyone involved was gathered in a room, and one by one they were suffocated with bags over their heads. Essie looked to Prisca before her bag was delivered, and one word was mouthed. Traitor. And naturally, Prisca was spared at the very end, allowed to live because she served her patriotic duty well. Her reward was to be made an experiment, to become an artificial light bearer to continue serving her country.

Prisca became a Martyr then, the first successful American-made light bearer. And with her new ability, she herself was turned into a child soldier, to fight for the country that stole everything away. Worst of all, she wasn't even allowed to die, the scientists all made sure that she never had the chance to end it all. This wasn't a reward at all, but a punishment, for snitching out everyone. Oddly enough, this act cemented America as a major power to stand against the New Japan's might after Emperor Ira Shoku defeated the Freedom Fighters and the HIVE. The two became the centerpieces of the war, and entire cities were turned into ruin as light bearers clashed with light bearers. In the end, the Yui of prophecy did something, breaking out of Shoku's control and in that final battle, she rained death down into the entire world, reducing everything to nothingness.

As for Prisca? Well, she found a certain girl during the final battle, going as Nemesis, one of the strongest under Shoku's power.. Prisca didn't stand a chance, she was going to join the dead very soon, keeping only a childhood keepsake, a reminder of her dead sister, the plastic rose. She was terrified yet also eager for a chance to apologize, and maybe she would have gotten it too, at least, if it wasn't for a fragment of the Goddess finding her and binding her soul to the rose in preparation for a new conflict...

"Yui." The technology was here, even if it was primitive compared to what she was used to in her own time, it didn't work too differently - the main difference was that holopads and holoscreens didn't exist in this strange new year. The white haired one and the blonde one were talking to one another but she ignored them, they didn't matter right now. Wiping away at the tears, Aria nodded at the screen, at the girl that mattered more than anyone else in the world. Yui was here, Yui was somehow alive in this impossible year of 2244. "I don't even... know what to say." Aria said, speaking Japanese, the language that the three humans here couldn't comprehend. "It's... my mind, it's all in jambles, I can kinda sorta remember... Ally and Leo, they had me for a few months but then..."

She couldn't wake up because a voice in her mind was telling her, that little sister of hers was telling her that it wasn't her time to wake yet, that her body would be kept asleep for quite some time longer. But now apparently the lock on her body was gone, she was finally awake, and Yui was here, Yui was in this strange new world as well, a million emotions running across her face on the screen. "I'm sorry... you had to watch me die, Yui." Aria stared into the screen, wishing they could have this reunion face to face. "I'm sorry that I wasn't there for you, for all this time." Ally's great grandkids had returned, naturally, at Sam's call, for now they would have to say here and help be interpreters so Aria wouldn't be too lost here, in this place.

There were so many things they had to talk about, but so many things they wouldn't have time to get to. "You're in a place, um, called Yavin, right? And I'm in Capitol City..." According to Sanaa at least, who Aria couldn't help but see as Ally Junior, the responsible side of her, while Kennan was the more childish, exuberant prankster hiding inside that wise girl's heart. "It won't be long until I can come to you, so please hold on just a little longer." The wind mage rubbed at her bloodshot eyes, she didn't - something like this, how could anyone be emotionally prepared for it? She said the name of her little sister but the world blocked it out. "...My sis, this is her doing. Somehow she made this miracle." Ever since that awful day when she vanished from this world forever and only traces of her memories existed, no one was able to speak her name.

She had so many questions. What happened to her daughter, what happened to Luna? Where was everyone else, did Xavier and Damian leave anyone behind, or maybe Luna somehow survived and her descendants existed? Was Yui being cared for, did they help her do her Ena every day? Aria too was going to need someone to help care for her ena, wasn't she? "I love you, Yui... I won't leave you alone again." M brought her back for a reason, and she had a feeling that that reason was to take her place as Yui's Guardian once again.

"Ari-Aria," Yui choked, her eyes welling up with big, wet tears. Yui choked back a sob, wishing that she could reach through the screen and hug her older sister, the one she had thought to be dead for nearly a hundred years. Yui nodded at Aria's words, she had yet to read the journal that Ally had left behind, but something told Yui that it would be a good time to read it. "Those two with you, Sanaa and Kenna, they're Ally and Leo's great, great Grandchildren." What was Yui going to tell Aria about Gavin? That was Luna's grandson. "About Luna," Yui took a deep breath in, "there's a boy here who is her Grandson. His name is Gavin, he's a light bearer." Yui smiled, tears brimming in her eyes once more. "Isn't that wonderful?" She asked, wishing that Gavin were here right now so he could meet his Great, Great Grandmother. "You're a Grandma Ari," in a way it was also a terrible thing.

Aria hadn't gotten to watch Luna grow up, she hadn't seen her daughter thrive and become a woman and struggle to survive, then find a husband and settle into a loving life and family, where she felt she could belong. Yui shook her head, "don't apologize," it wasn't as though Aria could help it. She had been outmatched by a girl named Rose, a girl who too, was alive. Yui wasn't going to tell Aria that the one who killed her was standing right behind her, a ghost of the past. Yui didn't think that it was something Aria needed to know since she was famous for acting based on her heart and not her head. "But you're here now," Yui said, touching her hand against the screen. "That's what matters, we'll be together soon," Yui turned towards Jace who was saying something to her.

"Yes, I'm in Yavin. They say that they can't bring you here until you've gone through the interview process that everyone has to go to before coming here." Yui had to go through it too, although they knew she wasn't exactly a threat it was more because there was no one who was of exception to this rule. Yui nodded, "Her name, it seems as though we've all forgotten it." Could it be that Ally had written it in her journal? Yui was going to have to check. She hoed that the answer was a yes, perhaps if it was, Yui would be ale to to figure out where she had gone and what her plan was. "Things today are very different," Yui said quietly. "They don't have books because most of them were wiped out, they use papers made of rocks that are actually really cool, and their knowledge of technology is very limited, although there is one good technician here that reminds me of Ally, her name is Nino."

Yui's eyes were brimming with tears for a third time. "I love you too Aria, I can't wait to see you again in person." There was one last thing that Yui needed to tell Aria, but it was not something she wanted to do via camera. She needed to tell Aria that Yui's power was more dangerous than they had previously believed. Yui had been the one to end the world and she feared that if anything ever went wrong, she would do it again.

The present, even if this present was so strange and impossible to even think of, it still happened. To Aria, this strange world of islands was a result of the Third World War somehow - known retroactively as the Calamity, of course. Just imagining the life her daughter must have lived, with both of her parents dead and gone... it was impossible to know that after her and Ronan's so-called deaths, Yurei stole baby Luna and took her to America - or what would eventually become Yavin. "I'll come for you, once I'm done here, once Sam teaches me the language and clears me to join, I'll never leave you again, Yui." Aria was done crying, her eyes pure with determination. "Your big sister can't wait to come back to you, Yui." Allowing them time to talk, Prisca turned to Miiko and pulled to another room.

"Miiko, I just got a message from Roz on my given phone." Every cadet was given a phone, of course, one through which they could contact their classmates and their Conductor whenever needed. It was common for Cadets to be kidnapped and beaten up, sold, or even tortured by the anti-war faction, so the phones were a needed addition. If a Conductor called and had no response, it would automatically send a silent alarm, and naturally, it was a way to keep track of the location of all the cadets. What it didn't do was listen in on the cadets or record them in any way. "First thing upon returning to the Academy tomorrow, we're supposed to prepare for a week-long Cadet trip." She was nervous about it, but Sanaa had given her a hint before Aria had the call set up for her. "Sanaa says that according to Jelly, if you keep holding the Rose as you sleep, I won't disappear."

Time flew by way too quickly and before Irina knew it, they were all in a series of cars traveling down the road. The trip was apparently for them to go to the underwater science facility made for Pablo, to learn about practical strategy in the Simulcrum Room, one of Pablo's inventions he made alongside Nino that could simulate any number of situations and environments for the cadets to have to try to survive in. "It's not even that big a deal." Lise said with a bored yawn as they headed to the dock where the submarines were waiting. "I don't know why everyone's so excited." But for all of the cadets who knew nothing about technology, it certainly was something new.

"I mean, considering how until now it was either drills or bookwork..." Cyris frowned when Lise yawned again, hardly even paying attention. Jonah was perhaps even more spirited than anyone else was, bouncing excitedly in his seat. "We're spending a week underwater..." Lise nodded, half asleep. Well for her, who could go and visit Pablo whenever she wanted, it probably was nothing but the normal sort of thing. "Get used to the weird oxygen levels, since you never know where war'll take you. It's harder to breathe in Aurum than it is to breathe in say, Ondern, because Aurum's high up in the mountains and Ondern's like this giant strange tropical ruin, full of good breathable air." Jonah then let out a squeal. "Look, guys, it's the dock! It's almost time for-" Conductor Roz's loud booming voice echoed through. "Everyone break into groups of five for the submarines, and don't jump too much, soldiers are professional, no matter what cool places you get to see on tours of duty!"

Emma had packed her few belongings into her bag. "Look what Sam bought me!" She said proudly, showing off the stuffed toy to which was growing popular in Capitol City. "A bitter rabbit?" Lise asked, her eyes sparkling. Emma nodded an hugged it, "he said for a great first weak," unlike Emma's bitter rabbit back on Yavin, this one was pink and instead of wearing a cute little suit this one wore a fancy dress, but still had the same eye patch that gave the rabbit its telltale name. "I'm calling her Lizzy," Emma said with a smile. Inside of the bear was a great big secret, one that Emma could never reveal. You see, Sam had worked very hard over the weekend to hide the black plastic rose so that Emma would be able to carry it with her. "Irina is jealous I think because all Sam gave her was a compass," Emma wiggled her eyebrows while she packed her rabbit into her bag that contained nothing but uniforms.

The bus containing the children was alive with excitement. Emma sat beside Irina in the isle seat so that she could gossip with Lise over what the two did during the weekend. "And then after the theater we went out to dinner and the air raid siren went off!" Emma threw her hands up into the air. "Sam said there was an explosion at the Military Academy, but I didn't see any ruined structures when we drove in yesterday evening," Lise nodded, her arms crossed. "That's because the Military Academy needs to have the best security there is. The gates were replaced quickly and efficiently before the students returned to school the next day," needless to say, Emma was impressed. She had spent Sunday avoiding the house with Sam and Irina while Sanaa and Kennan began to teach Nemesis their language.

"Did you get to fight?" Emma had just asked when Roz asked for their attention. "As you all know, we're quickly coming up on the underwater facility that we will be staying at for one week. I expect you lot to be on your best behavior and remember, not only are these fellow cadets your comrades, but all military and combat personal. So you better treat them like your gosh darn Mother and Father!" There were a few good hearted laughs, however they could all tell that Roz was serious in his threats of punishing them if they set so much as a toe out of line. "We'll be good!" Emma promised, then blushed, realizing how loudly she had spoken. "I-I mean so-sorry!" She hid her face in her hands, hoping that the class did not think that Emma was speaking for them.

"Now, when we return, we'll be holding positions for class representative. There will be a nomination and vote, the representative is an important position that will be in charge of keeping track of your scores during the war games. They'll need to smart, calm, have a clear head, and be able to act quickly under pressure. I suggest you all give it some thought before volunteering yourselves because this person will also have to set the bar for the rest of the class." It was obvious who Emma was going to nominate, she believed that Lise was the perfect girl for the job. She would have nominated Irina but well, the two girls needed to remain well out of the lime light.

Irina rolled her eyes at the bitter rabbit. What if people now assumed that the Bitter Rabbit was the Summoner and that it was once her own special thing? No way, her special thing was the Rose, the black rose that Essie gave her such a long time - okay, no it didn't even matter because it wasn't like anyone would ever know that she was a Spirit. "It's so weird that this girl is better than pretty much everyone in the class." Cyrus snorted, patting her head fondly. "No one would make fun of you, even if you wore a diaper to class one day." Irina giggled, finding that idea quite humorous. "Maybe she does, just under her uniform?" They had two uniforms, one for combat purposes which they would wear for the first time today in the Simulcrum Room - and the other, the standard dress uniform, which they were wearing now. Of course, they had multiple copies of both.

"I got to fight, luckily." Lise smirked, playing with one of the blonde hairs on her head just as they arrived at the dock. The five of them grouped together naturally and entered a submarine together. "I saved Jonah from the bomb, and I got to show off my moves to him!" Lise's eyes glittered as they each entered the vessel, Lise shutting it on her way in. The five of them made themselves comfortable in the blue sea vehicle with surprisingly fancy leather seating. "There's a reason she's a member of the Elite Four." Jonah seemed very impressed by it all. "But Captain Varus and his daughter, Havran-" Irina tried not to snort at how inaccurate that was - "We couldn't catch them, they got away." As much as Varus was a pain, it was probably good they didn't catch him. "Once we graduate, we're going to make sure no one escapes L's Law.' Irina said confidently, knowing every word was a lie.

Naturally, Lise was the only real choice for the Class Rep, because Irina sure as heck didn't want it. Cyrus might try to run - being the son of a Senator meant he had a high bar to try to reach, but Lise was a decorated member of the Elite Four already, so there was no way he could beat her. "Don't worry, these subs, they don't have recording devices. So I'm gonna ask you four a question, okay?" Lise's eyes were serious, whatever this talk was going to be about, it wasn't something for them to joke about. "Um, sure." Jonah tapped his fingers to his cheek in anticipation. Lise nodded. "What do you four think about light bearers?"

As Irina froze trying to think of the best way to answer this without falling into a trap, Cyrus spoke first. "I was raised to hate them, to think of them as dangerous aberrations." He answered honestly, almost sullenly. "...But really, I just pity them, being in a world, being hated by everyone..." Jonah scowled, he seemed a little less receptive. "I'm jealous." He said, perhaps showing a bit of the real him underneath the joker mask. "They get to be so strong, have powers, they can save people... if I was a light bearer, then maybe..." He turned his gaze away, expression dark. It was Irina's turn now. "They're dangerous." Irina decided. "If one decided to kill Emma, a normal person like me, I'd never be able to. Light bearers are stronger than normal humans." And last but not least, was Emma's response.

Emma's expression was one of delight while she watched out the windows of the submarine. "Look at all the fish!" she said in delight, the cushy leather armchair nearly taking her captive what with how large it was and how small Emma was. When the conversation turned to light bearers, Emma's expression changed ever so slightly. "What about them?" She asked, her inflection surprisingly passive. She listened as everyone gave their opinions and reasoning, which made plenty of sense of course, although Emma could not find that she agreed with them. She had to pretend, however, in order to fit in. "Thinking of them makes me sad," Emma admitted. "There was a light bearer at the orphanage, a boy. One day he was taken away and I never saw him again." She had read that in one of the files of course and Emma wiped away her fake tears, knowing that now was not the time to cry.

"I think that they're dangerous because of what they can do, but humans in general are dangerous, right?" Emma twirled a lock of hair that had fallen out of her bun around her finger. "I think that they should be useful and put to work in the military, allowed to live like us, not just locked up like dogs." Was Emma thinking resourcefully. The rebellion employed the use of light bearers. As rebels, light bearers could live however they wanted, they were free to chose the life they sought, whether they wanted to fight or not, if they wanted their future to be surrounded in warfare, or if they desired to live a "normal" life and get married and have children. Whereas in Capitol City, should you be accused of being a light bearer and the accusations proved true, you were jailed without trial or hope for release.

"Some light bearers are bad too, of course, like the ones that work for the rebels. Those should be locked up!" Emma spoke, impassioned by her own fake thoughts. "I can't wait until I graduate and can pay back those scoundrels for what they did to my family." Her eyes were welling up with hot tears once more and her shoulders shook. Emma buried her head in Irina's shoulder to cry. Not over her supposed dead family, but over the fact that she had to speak so badly about her real family, the rebels in Yavin and Ondern who were counting on the two girl's to recruit young minds and bodies to join their cause. Emma sniffled and wiped her eyes, at last calming herself down enough to glance up at the others. "S-sorry, it-it still hurts," the pain of death was always fresh on the heart and a burden on the soul, Emma was not excited about the prospect of killing and taking away a child, a friend, a sibling from their family.

"Lise, what do you think about light bearers?" Emma inquired, curious about as to why Lise had brought up the question. Did she have a secret? Emma gasped, "you're not a light bearer, are you?!" Emma asked, taking Lise's hands. "And you're only confiding your secret to us?" Emma hugged Lise tightly, her own secret hidden underneath that fingerless glove. "Don't worry, as long as you prove that you aren't an evil scoundrel I'll never tell on you!"

This luxury submarine was only for military use, and here it was, ferrying cadets from the island to the underwater science labs where Pablo spent most of his time when he wasn't on a mission. It was a gentle, almost calming shade of blue, but with so much blue it made Prisca wonder if maybe they'd want a different color instead. Still, it wasn't bad, it was rather nice in here. Emma gave a much more detailed answer on light bearers than any of the others had, and Irina patted her on the head and hugged her close. "Shh, don't cry, it'll be okay." She comforted her Caster, not wanting her to cry like this. Once Emma was done with that she went on the offensive, taking the initiative to more or less accuse Lise of being a light bearer. If that was why Lise brought this up - then maybe they'd be able to get her to join their side?

Lise was quiet for a long time, as if there was an internal debate inside of her mind. She almost froze like a statue, to the point that even Cyrus and Jonah looked at her in curiosity. No one said a word, the only sound was the gentle hum of the submarine as the underwater science lab made it's entrance, you could see it through the window if you looked, but no one really was. Lise was the star of the show here, the little prodigy. If she was a light bearer, if it was an ability similar to Prisca's, a subtle one that had no visual indicators, that would explain why she was so strong, wouldn't it? "Um..." Lise looked as if it was physically painful for her to speak. "I'm not, no, I was just curious, really. Light bearers are enemies, they could destroy everything L's been trying to do... I won't forgive them." But her words rang hollow, without any force behind them.

They arrived at the science labs then, which for some ungodly reason were decorated in a rainbow color. "It's already killing my eyes." Irina muttered as the submarine's driver extended the tube that connected to ports for them to crawl into that would take them into the facility. It was almost like how airplanes and airports connected back in the old modern times. There was something in the rubber tubing that made it able to resist the water pressure so that it wouldn't crush them under the weight of the sea. "We're here!" Lise declared, brightening up when she saw Pablo waiting for her at the entrance pod that lead to the rest of the facility. Conductor Roz was there too, chatting to Pablo as if he were an old friend.

Almost immediately Pablo was tackled by Lise who monkeyed her way up his body to ride on his back. Roz let out a dispproving tut but since Pablo didn't mind - he was in fact laughing along and playing with her, dangling her off of his arms - and then Pablo caught sight of the other two girls. "Sam's sisters! I was so excited to see you both!" He trapped Emma in a hug and poked Irina's nose peculiarly. "Welcome to Capitol City's Science Lab!" Conductor Roz grunted to get Pablo's attention. "Learn some professionalism, would you?" He scolded, rapping Pablo on the back of the head. "Tell them the security rules these brats'll have to follow while they're here!"

Irina pat her head comfortingly and Emma squirmed, feeling a bit like a dog who was being told that she was doing a good job, that she was a good girl. It wasn't a bad feeling per say, but Emma did feel as though those who were counting on her expected a better performance. Eventually she sniffled and looked up, apologizing for how weak she was. It was a wonder that she had come as far as she had, surviving an entire week at Military School. One week down, four years to go. Emma was, however, learning a whole lot that she never would have on Yavin. She now knew why exactly the ocean was blue (because it was a reflection of the sky) and where the sun went when it retreated behind the clouds. Suffice to say, Emma was very satisfied in knowing these answers. She could not wait to go back home and rub it in Stella's face.

Had Stella leaned all of these things during her imprisonment? Probably not. Lise had gone quiet after Emma's accusation and Emma's eyes widened. Could it be possible that one of the Elite Four was actually a light bearer? The weight of Emma's own light bearing mark burned with the reminder that she was different, an outcast, that she could never actually trust anyone here except Irina. "Lise, you aren't actually a light bearer, right?" Emma asked, the tension so thick you couold slice it with a very sharp knife. Eventually Lise remembered to shake her head and deny it and they all exhaled in relief, coming upon the rainbow facility that interrupted the tranquility of the water. In Emma's honest opinion, to be quite frank, the building was an eyesore. It interrupted the natural order of the sea, it's rainbow color did nothing to blend in and therefore the building was a beacon, almost as though it were screaming "Come and get me!"

"I don't like it, I don't think the fish do either," Emma wrinkled her nose and hoisted her back pack onto her shoulders so that she could climb the later into the terminal where they would be arriving. Emma was the last to exit the beautiful submarine into the interesting building. Mercifully, the walls inside were not painted that same hideous shade of regurgitated rainbow. Emma quite preferred the interior, a nice, soft blue that reflected the colors outside. "It's so tranquil, I feel calm," Emma said, suddenly tired. "That's because of the difference in air pressure," one of the classmates explained, overhearing Emma and speaking over her so that he could be heard. "Th-thanks," Emma blushed, running to hide behind Irina.

When Pablo arrived he was quite the exuberant host, so much so that Roz scolded him to be more formal with the cadets, to give them rigid rules and a tight schedule. These were, after all, soldiers in the making. Emma stood up a bit straighter, attempting to look older until Pablo singled them out. Instinctively Emma jumped and squeaked in terror, running to hide behind her older sister, Irina, so that she might stay out of view. Pablo, on the other hand, had other ideas. He approached them slowly, grabbed Emma into a chest crushing hug and then poked Irina's nose. Emma was quaking ever so slightly by the time Pablo released her from his hold.

At least the inside of this gaudy building wasn't quite so bad, if Irina had to say so herself. If only the exterior weren't so bright, it was almost like they were asking to be a target. Or perhaps it was arrogance, in that Pablo was fully equipped to handle anyone trying to attack the science lab one way or another. "Professor P-Pablo, st-stop." Irina murmured, knowing that Emma was being crushed by the hug of this tall spindly man. "Don't single us out just because we're Sam's sisters." Pablo nodded, a sensible argument. To Conductor Roz's pain, Pablo proceeded to hug every single one of the cadets in big crushing hugs as he gave out the safety information on how to survive in case of emergency and other such things. "You'll be spending a week here, and there's plenty of sensitive machinery here, so I expect you all to be on your best behavior." Roz demanded.

"It'll be okay, they're kids, let them have some fun." Pablo flapped his arm as if this was all just fun and games to him. Captain Roz honestly saw Pablo was irritating - but no matter how flouncy he was, it can't be denied that he's incredibly effective as the science head of the military, creating many new ways to train and protect and arm the soldiers to keep them ahead of the curve when it came to taking out enemies. The stronger you were, the more lives you could spare in a battle. "Okay, move it along, Pablo, I wanna get to the Simulcrum already." Pablo giggled like a little girl and walked behind Lise, who's already spent so much time here in the past. "I need to do the tour of the place first so the little chicks don't get lost!"

For soldiers to be referred to as chicks, it was certainly strange. Well, they weren't soldiers yet, so perhaps it was okay to call them that. Pablo lead them around the reasonably colored facility, showing them the dorms - three per room - the mess hall, the bathrooms, the emergency exits that lead to escape shuttles, the works. They were in a special wing of the lab, naturally, away from the actual science areas where they ran experiments and the like. In one of the labs was an experimental cure for the black death plaguing Jaspar's children, and they'd ship it to Aurum any day now.

And then the main attraction was here, the Simulcrum. "This is a marvel, created by me and Ninomiya, who has left us." Pablo wasn't willing to erase her name from this invention, this wonder created by the two of them. She might have deserted, but as fellow scientists, she deserved credit where it was due. "Here, you'll experience whatever combat scenario your Conductor pleases, to punish and torture you until you're broken and have become worthy little soldiers." This was the best combat preparation simulation program ever invented in human history thus far, it was one of the reasons why Capitol City's soldiers were strong compared to the average fighter on any other island. "Welcome to the Simulcrum."

They would not get to enter the SimulCrum today, no, today would be a day of learning. Tomorrow perhaps, if they behaved well enough to sow that they deserved to get to use the marvel of the Republic army. "I wanted to go in it," Emma whispered with a pout to Irina, wishing that Pablo trusted them enough to test out this product today. Of course, it was more than likely Conductor Roz, or the itinerary that had been set for them. Next on the schedule was a lunch break and then their first class here, they would be learning about the science portion of the military, a very realistic career for those who showed aptitude in this category. Emma did not, therefore she found going to to it a waste of time, but knew that she could not complain lest she wanted to be slapped with ten hundred laps around the SimulCrum, which Roz had already threatened one rowdy boy with.

"Wow, it smells great in here," better than the place that they ate meals in at the school. "The food here is first class, there's always a fresh catch," Lise said, leading them to the lunch line where they grabbed a tray. Emma lifted a plate onto her's, wondering what fish tasted like. "I've never eaten fish before," Emma said while she picked up a dessert. She was very happy with her last weigh in, Emma had lost a whole two pounds and as such was treating herself to a cookie. "Then again I've never been under the-" her jaw dropped when she looked up, there was a whale swimming above them. "Wow," she gasped, turning in a circle to watch the whale disappear. "I've never seen a fish that big," she sat down at the table where Group B had been assigned to eat but hardly touched her food she was so excited to watch the fish swim by.

"Group B! Five minutes," by the time Emma returned to the table the only time she had was long enough for two fork fulls of fish and a bite out of the cookie. She jogged to keep up with Irina and the group, nearly having been left behind. "That was close," Emma whispered, falling into line beside Irina. "Hey, when do you think we'll get to go to the SimulCrum?" She inquired to her partner, "I know we're not supposed to be having fun, but after that first war game I can't help but feel excited." The group was led towards a preparation area where they were instructed to put their hair up and underneath caps, including the boys. Next they had to put covers over their shoes and don lab coats so that they did not contaminate whatever was inside of the lab.

"What do you think of this place?" Emma asked, wanting her older sister's opinion of the situation. If they were found out and needed to escape, there was no way out. They would have to steal a submarine, or hold their breath so long that their faces would turn blue and their lungs would explode from the difference in pressure.

This science lab reminded her so much of Aurum, of technology that was no longer readily available except in small doses. Today wasn't SimulCrum day unfortunately, it was just a tour of the science facilities. The more technically-minded of them would get to see if they were compatible to work as scientists here. "These experiments are potentially dangerous, so we run them away from the human settlement of Capitol City, so we don't harm the lives on the surface." One of the scientists explained throughout their tour, which made Irina wonder how little they valued the sea life. They even got to see doctors hard at work on the cure for the Jaspar kids, hopefully that would be enough to soothe Miiko's grieving heart when she saw that child in a body bag at Aurum's facility.

"Fish is good, I think you'd like it." Irina said, though the idea of eating that gargantuan whale was a little bit silly to consider. If it wanted to, it could easily smash through the glass of the facility and kill them - well, perhaps not, if Pablo's defensive systems were as good as they had to be. "I think tomorrow we can test out the simulation tech." Irina really wanted to see what they were capable of, what they could do. "Trust me, it's not that exciting." Lise waved her hand dismissively, adjusting her collar with a slight bit of discomfort. "We're just first year cadets." Jonah winked at them as he finished his meal. "We don't have to worry about being super serious until next year." While it was true that they were just first years, the military wasn't really a place for fun and games.

The time for eating was over, now they were instructed to actually enter a lab itself. "This is the Aquatic Biology Sector." Pablo announced, waving his floppy arms for them to see. They were all geared up and Irina felt rather stuffy. Earlier she told Emma that it was a nice change from the dusty old Military Academy, but she hoped they wouldn't be here for the long term... down here, there was no way they could stay in contact with the Rebellion, it was dangerous to be out of reach for so long. "What do you do here?" One of the boys asked so a scientist volunteered her information, discussing at length how they were trying to save the dying species of fish in order to preserve animal diversity in the sea's ecosystem. Many breeds were dying out, they were testing a great many kinds of medicines to cure the fish of their plagues.

"And here we're trying to understand light." After the Calamity, the Light Seed as mentioned in the prophecy broke into pieces, one for each Island, and unlike most islands where the shard of the Light Seed existed under the water, safe from being seen, this one was right here, being openly studied. "So many new diseases are propping up, and we think it's because of the Light Seed." Pablo showed them, this was absolutely top secret. Naturally they all had to sign consent forms before coming here. "We think by studying and understanding light, we can use it to heal and help those who need it, to enhance the lives of our people." Lise yawned, already bored of this. "I'm tired of all this science, can't we just go to sleep now?" The little blonde asked with a half grin, leaning back in a chair.

Emma wasn't interested in things like ocean plagues and medicines, what she was curious about was the Light Seed, that and something else. Behind a curtain Emma caught sight of something rather curious. It was a body suspended in blue liquid, however the curious thing about it was that there were wires poking out. "What's that?" Emma asked, pointing to it. Pablo rushed over, drawing a curtain over it to block their view. "Nothing, nothing!" He said with a shake of his head, but based on the few letters that Emma had seen she realized that the tank was labelled PROJECT RONAN. Ronan? Perhaps it was some sort of AI? Emma had heard of such things existing int he old times, computers that were so smart they could make you food, but she had never seen one with her own eyes. What would they be doing with such technology? Emma would have to report it when she returned home.

"This way please," Roz touched Emma's shoulder, squeezing it ever so slightly. Not to hurt of course, but a warning. "Don't look at things that aren't presented to you," he said, then moved on as though nothing had happened. Emma was rather confused, but decided not to question it. She fell into step beside Irina, she could always make her inquiry later on, when the three girls would retire to their room. "IN this section we have food safety precautions," Pablo began but Emma had stopped listening, at least until someone volunteered her for a demonstration. "M-m-me?!" Emma squeaked, Cyrus grabbing her wrist and dragging her to the front. "We all voted, we think you should be the one to try it out." Emma wasn't sure what she was trying out until she saw it, what looked like a small white pill. "Pick a flavor, any flavor," Pablo said excitedly.

Emma squirmed, standing in front of the entire class. They were yelling out flavors, Emma met Irina's eyes, panicked. "U-um, ch-cho-chocolate!" She squeaked and Pablo nodded. He placed the pill inside of a machine and typed a code in, then the pill came out again, this time brown. "Put this on your tongue and tell me what it tastes like," Emma took the pill gingerly from him and closed her eyes, placing the pill on top of her tongue. Her eyes opened and then widened in delight, "It tastes like chocolate!" She realized, her hands no longer shaking. "Exactly!" Pablo was clearly excited how he explained that these were emergency rations, that should the outlying provinces ever ran out of rations they would receive these pills which would substitute, because of course the outlying provinces would be the first to cut off.

They were assured, however, that as soldiers, should they proceed through these next four years, they would never have to worry about things like rations and food stamps. Their comfortable lives were guaranteed as long as they passed the final exam. "Thank you Emma, you can go back to your sister," Emma was dying to escape the limelight. She ran to hide behind Irina, holding onto her jacket as though sh were a little girl in need of guidance.

This battle was a mistake. This whole thing was a mistake that never should have happened. On what used to be Britain, a brutal war took place between Everett Island and Capitol City, but unlike the usual where the population surrenders rather quickly, Everett's people were ready to fight to the death, every single one of them. "This isn't your fault, L." Pablo said quietly, glancing at the burning city. Even when victory was impossible, they kept on fighting, they never gave up, even when it came to this. The enigmatic scientist was unusually grave as he looked upon the scene. "They weren't going to surrender, no matter what we did." Orianna was planting a flower, to commemorate the deaths of everyone here, and Nino was watching with smoldering eyes, as if hating what her inventions were forced to do.

It was the first battle where they actually used guns, newly reinvented thanks to the efforts of Pablo and Nino, two geniuses. With basic firearms came the ability to use long ranged armaments like mortars and cannons, and in the end, it was necessary. "The soldiers are uncultured." Orianna said softy once she was done with the mass grave. "L, we need to do something about them, they're all too happy to kill." The war with Enrya taught the people of Capitol City what it was like to be weak, to be trampled on, to have your people stolen and kidnapped and sold and never seen again. Now that they were strong, they were willing to do anything so that they wouldn't feel weak again, even if it meant crushing the lives of other Islands, one by one. Nino was silently furious, unable to bring up any words.

The four of them walked through the still burning ruins of a city, Everett Island's Monument was the Clocktower, tall and looming, a relic of the past. Here it was, a grave marker for all the lives here. "Orianna, Pablo, Nino, we can't forget this tragedy." L said softly as he tried to hold in his emotions. "We can't allow anything like this to happen again." Orianna nodded, believing his grief. Pablo patted his old friend on the shoulder, sharing the burden of guilt. Nino hissed and turned her head away, not buying the mourning look in the President's eye. And then through Orianna's binoculars she saw and heard something. "L! L, there's someone still alive!"

Digging through the rubble they found a small child, about six years old, sporting a strange glowing mark on her neck. The child bit her lip, jumping out of the debris, clumsily holding a gun far too big for her, a gun she pilfered off of a dead Capitol City soldier. "You killed everyone!" She screamed, firing wildly, losing control of the gun and the recoil. But no matter how childish she was, how young she was, in her eyes was a fighter, a warrior. "I'll kill you! I'll avenge everyone, for mommy, daddy, I won't forgive you!" L took a bullet to the chest but he didn't care, he embraced the girl. If Everett Island's extermination was a mistake, then raising this girl and giving her a new life would be his atonement, wouldn't it? He tied a scarf around her neck to hide the mark. "Don't say anything." He said before anyone could advise him on how bad an idea this was, on how the Senate would take advantage of her. "I'm going to take care of her." If at least one life was saved, then maybe this massacre wasn't all for nothing.

"I'm back!" The building smoldered, it sighed, heaving as its exterior burned brightly, a beautiful ray of sunlight in the dark of night. The flowers fell from his hand, one by one they scattered to the wind as though they were shooting stars meant to be wished on. The gate swung open, a soot covered child emerging from the burning building. "Sam?" Sam stood, his heart beating at the rate of a rocket zipping off to the moon. "Mia! Mia I'm over here!" Sam ran forward, catching and easing the child to the ground. "Sam-" Mia coughed, more than half of her body had been burned, her flesh was a mess of charred skin and cloth that had melted onto her body. "Mia, who did this?" Sam's eyes welled up with tears, he had turned ten two days prior, he had gone to the field to pick some wildflower's for the girl who had graduated from the orphanage.

"The man, he had the patch... of the... of..." her eyes widened. Sam grabbed Mia's wrists, "of what?! Who did this Mia!" Mia looked up at Sam, blinking back tears. "The Republic," he released her wrists and she ever so gently placed a hand against his chest. "Its beat is strong," Mia whispered. "Sam, I'm afraid," Sam was scared to hold her, his hug was gentle. "Don't be, because where you're going, you'll be with your Mommy and Daddy." Mia nodded, a slight smile tilting her lips upwards as her eyes became glassy and she stared unblinkingly at the stars she had joined. "Noooo!" Sam screamed to the Heavens, making sure that all could hear his sorrow, the melancholy of the boy who survived.

He wasn't sure when the hand brushed his shoulder. Sam looked up, his body tense. Was it the Republic? Had they come to burn him too? In the light of the fire burning as bright as the sun, stood a man with silver hair that was pulled back from his face, a long coat protecting him from the blistering cold air that plagued the mountains at night. "It does us no good to hold onto the dead," Jace spoke, his voice soft, mournful. "The only thing you can do now is move on, remember her, allow that pain and sorrow to build like the fire that burned your home to the ground. Use it and you can become destined for greatness." With one blink the man disappeared, a star having disappeared as darkness gave way to light and morning came, the remainder of his home now smoldering like charcoal, a memory that would be chalked up as another tragedy of this awful war.

Sam stood with shaking legs and bare feet, with torn clothes and a fragment of Miya's dress, the only description he had to go by was the description of the silver haired man. Find him, Sam had to find him, he would stop at nothing to hear more of those words, the words that drove him to mad by day and kept him up at night. How could Sam obtain the power he needed to feed this fire? How could Sam ever become anything more than another orphan of war whose life was seen as nothing more than a tragedy. Then at last a hint came in the form of an eavesdropped conversation.

"They say them rebels 'ave their own island now. Callin' it Yeevin, Yavin? Say they've appointed their leader to some shifty silver haired man." He was skinny, malnourished, his skin dirty, his clothes ripped, but with hope Sam tucked these words away and set off to chase the fairy tale that was Jace Miya.

It was afternoon of Tuesday and now they were finally being given permission to enter the SimulCrum. The entrance to the strange room was very futuristic and sleek, and Pablo was positively grinning as the cadets entered one by one. "Geez, Pablo, don't get a hard on, it's not that exciting." Lise said in her usual snide manner, not even the slightest bit impressed. The room itself was relatively small and almost completely dark, though thirty headsets connected to some gigantic motherboard at the top descended down to greet them. On a screen in front of them, instructions on how to put the headsets on were there. It wasn't too complicated, you just had to fasten it on and latch the chin strap and ensure all the wires were connected. "This is the SimulCrum, everyone. Please put on your headsets." Pablo instructed, typing in the necessary inputs to the monitor at the back. "While this is a simulated reality, the pain you feel will be very real. There is no risk of dying, but death in the simulation does not make for a pleasant experience."

More things were said of course, but finally a whirring began. "Oh, yeah, this part hurts." Lise giggled and then an electric shock went through their bodies, knocking them out and sending their subconsciouses into the simulated reality. Almost instantly it looked very strange. What appeared to have once been Walt Disney World in Florida was completely changed into a whole new thing, a floating city built atop the ruins of the amusement park. "This is the battle of Ondern, of five years ago." Pablo's voice floated above them, and Irina realized she was in the simulation. Lise was grinning, as if remembering the glory of her first battle. "Your performances will be scored of course, and there will be a leaderboard."

Lise smirked, raising a middle finger to the sky. "As if anyone would ever beat me, nerd!" Irina glanced over at Emma and held her by the shoulders in case this was too much, since she knew what was about to happen. "Emma, are you okay? Pablo warned us of nausea, if you need to sit this one out, you can." How cruel, forcing her to fight against her family like this, even if it was just a simulation. They were all on board the Imperial Dusk, approaching Ondern's port every second. And then to the left there was the sound of cannons. The Yavinese Fleet was here, heralded by the best ship captain ever to exist in the time.

"Varus here, you fools! I'm here to teach you to bully our allies at Ondern!" Since it was just a simulation, it wasn't like they could die, but the feeling of drowning if the ship sunk here would definitely be real. "Someone, steer the ship!" Cyrus screamed, motioning for Jonah to get to the controls. "We need to defeat Varus first before we can fight the Ondern military at the dock!" Joanh got straight to it, but then a screen appeared before her eyes. A drop down menu, allowing them to choose two weapons to use for the simulation. Irina decided on an automatic rifle for her primary and a short sword for her secondary. "Emma, stay close to me, we're going to board the Horizon Star!" Surely by killing the simulation of Varus they would get to avoid coming face to face with Stella, Jace, Gavin, and Athena, who were waiting at the docks.

Emma was excited and nervous all the same, so much so, in fact, that she thought she might scream and throw up. There was no tension int he air, only excitable chatter while each student lined up to the beds that had been set up inside of the dome that was the Simulcrum. Emma swung her legs over to the side of the stretcher, feeling rather like a corpse in a coffin. She didn't resist when nodes, headphones, and wires began to stick to her body. The cadets had donned their fatigues this morning, everything but their boots and hats. They were a sea of green and brown, all lined up neatly, a number at the end of each bed. No longer names, but numbers, was this what it meant to die for the Republic? "I'm kind of nervous," Emma admitted, she had hardly touched her breakfast. "Wait, it hurts?!" An electric shock went through her body and Emma felt as though she couldn't breathe. Her hands scratched against the stretcher and with one last convulsion, Emma went limp.

When her eyes next opened she was standing before a scene she had never wanted to see again. This was that dreadful day, the one where Stella was taken. Emma feared that she would definitely throw up now, "I think I need to sit down," with one hand on her stomach she leaned back against the boat, Jonah grabbing the controls. "Jonah, do you know how to drive a boat?!" Emma asked, attempting to right herself. This was bad, if Emma encountered herself here thy would surely realize what sort of ploy her position as a cadet was. A drop down menu appeared in the corner of her eyes and for a moment Emma noticed that if she stared at someone for more than three seconds a stat appeared beside them. With some hesitance Emma chose a dagger, she would leave the decision of her second weapon to later on in the game. "I'm going!" Emma touched Irina's hand and dove off of the bow of the ship, landing in the water with hardly a splash.

She opened her eyes beneath the water and quickly dodged a propeller. Emma broke the surface, greeted by the sounds of her classmates screaming at her. If Emma ended this quickly then perhaps no one would see her, the real version of herself assisting the rebels. "What are you doing?! Get back here! We need a battle plan!" A lifebouy was thrown over the edge, it landed over her head and with hardly any effort three boys pulled her back onto the deck. "We need a definite plan stupid," one of them said, "don't just jump overboard like that!" Emma shook her head, she was soaked through, but considering she was going to jump back in she didn't mind. "Fine, what do we do?" The group turned towards Jonah and while pondering how their team would maneuver, Emma grabbed Irina's hand and sneaked below to the marine head.

"I know what's going to happen next," she said quietly, "you do too I expect," it was dangerous to say too much while they were inside of the simulation, but Emma hoped that Irina was receiving Emma's desperate mental transition. "If we encounter the other team, I'm afraid of what might happen." A knock on the door startled Emma out of her thoughts "Are you two making out in there? Come on out, we've thought up a plan!"

The absolute highest imperitive here was that they weren't see with the Miiko of the simulation. If Emma was seen together with her, the game would be over. Yes, they had disguises on, different hair color and style, and Emma was probably a little bit taller now as well, but the similarities would be impossible for any smart person to overlook. They had to stay away from the shores of Ondern at all costs, because that was where Jace, Stella, Athena, and Miiko were. "Just sit down, get your bearings." Irina told Emma, because something like this, how could she prepare emotionally for this? "Let's not do anything hasty." Jonah took the controls, keeping them from getting hit by Varus's cannons as best as they could. "I don't!" He laughed to the stormy air above them. "The controls are floating in front of my eyes, this is so crazy!"

"She gets seasick." Irina was quick to explain to Lise, who gave Emma a worried frown. "When there's turbulence, it's hard for her." It was strange in this day and age for any soldier to want to enlist when suffering from seasickness, but you could chalk it up to not wanting to be separated from Irina, not wanting to be the only sibling not part of the military like the other two would be. Emma dove out into the water but the other boys pulled her back out of a misguided sense of protectiveness. Emma then took her to a place of seclusion for them to speak. "I'll protect you." Was her response, to try to trick anyone listening to believe that this was just Emma being afraid of going into real combat. She was, after all, a young girl, it was normal to be afraid.

The class gathered then at the top of the ship where Jonah was controlling everything. Lise was playing dumb, not saying anything. She had been there in person, as was Miiko, they both knew how this battle would go. "We need to defeat Varus and his ship first, or we'll be stuck fighting on two different sides." Jonah explained as he whirled the wheel, dodging the cannon fire as best as he could. One flew over their heads, almost killing them if it had been aimed any lower. "See, those stationed at Ondern's port, they're preparing boats too, we can't get caught fighting on two fronts." But Irina desperately needed them to, otherwise Emma would be found out! "I have a strategy in mind." She said suddenly, coming up with some sort of plan.

"Instead of destroying the Horizon Star, what if some of us infiltrated the ship and killed Varus?" It was taking a very drastic departure from what really happened, with the Republic Fleet coming into direct contact with Ondern, and then only after that this Varus box them in with his ships from behind. "Then we'll have two flagships to attack with, instead of just the Imperial Dusk." Jonah thought about it, and then he nodded. "Okay." He agreed. "We need to ram the Horizon Star to let a small elite team board, and then the rest of us can focus on breaking past Ondern's defences." Cyrus rose his hand, not to volunteer, but with a suggestion. "What if the three girls snuck onto the other boat?" Irina was very surprised at how smoothly this all went. As long as they remained on the Horizon Star, they wouldn't have to worry about being seen together with the simulation version of Miiko.

Emma nodded, "Y-yes, s-s-sea sick," it was easy to feign being nauseous when you believed that you were about to throw up. She led Irina into the restroom and explained the situation, which made Irina hug and declare that she would protect her. When the two emerged, Emma suddenly realized that they were all barefoot. Their shoes had not transferred into the simulation with them, which was something of interest. "So if-if all three girls go..." they could take over the ship. "I-I can d-do it!" Emma squeaked, raising her hand. "I c-can jump far... Iri can too! So just get us close," Emma glanced at Irina and subtly nodded, even if one of them recognized Miiko it was unlikely that they would make the connection if Emma was not right beside her. The good news was the fact that they did not have to worry about Irina being discovered since she had not yet returned to existence.

"Be careful, we're not wearing shoes," Emma said very quietly to the girls as the three of them lined up to jump. The boat swung right beside the Horizon Star and on three they all leaped over the railing and jumped recklessly towards the other boat. Emma's fingers had just grasped the bar on the Horizon and she hoisted herself up, her feet slick with salt water, which made the incline treacherous, but eventually she swung herself over and leaned, panting and holding her side. "I-I did it," Emma stood upright, withdrawing her dagger. Alright, it was time to get serious. Emma looked around, hoping to see Irina and Lise but she suddenly realized that she was alone. The rest of the scene had frozen, was there, perhaps, a glitch? Emma looked around, able to see things in a strange sort of slow motion. "So, you're here?" She whirled around, her heart thumping in her chest.

Outside of the simulation, Pablo blinked and took another glance at his screen. "Sir, there's something wrong with one of the cadets monitors." Pablo turned and nodded, "I've noticed," he took a sip from his mug. "What number is it?" Surely it was just a technical matter of rebooting. "Number twenty two-" Pablo choked on his coffee. "That's Sam's sister!" Pablo jumped to his feet, running to check on the state of the girl. She was fine, in perfect condition albeit a bit clammy, but that could be from the battle simulation. "Temperature is normal, heart rate is slightly inclined, but she shouldn't be disconnected. Check the filter," Pablo demanded. "All clear sir," Pablo frowned, "this could be an internal server error then." He noted, making his way towards the super computer. "Let's monitor, if there's no change we'll pull twenty two from the game."

When Emma unfroze she found that Lise was already in action. "Where did you go?" Lise asked, striking down a rebel. Emma winced, shying away from the blood. "I don't know, I think there was a glitch, where's Irina?" Lise pointed in a direction and Emma took off in search of her older sister, sliding on blood ever so often or taking a secret passage in order to avoid running into any rebels.

That was odd, Emma suddenly vanished. "Look out!" Lise shouted, grabbing her attention, and Irina made sure to swivel her body to stab through a rebel with her thrusting sword. She was so tempted to choose the rapier, but if she did it would've been quite suspicious, suffice to say. "Where the heck is Emma?" Irina didn't know, she vanished somewhere. "There's no time to wait for her, I'm going to go straight for Varus's head"! Naturally their scores in the Simulcrum would be added to the leaderboard back at the Military Academy, and for every kill, depending on who it was, the number designating your points was on the left. If you shut your eyes, you could see a class leaderboard overlay to see who had how many points. Right now Lise was in the lead. "Honestly, this strategy wouldn't have worked for real."

The blonde wasn't wrong. Lise had been there, after all. "It's been set on easy, did you notice? Varus is an expert ship's captain, he would never have let Jonah get so close like that without killing us." Irina shrugged, of course it was like that. "It's on easy, and we're just cadets, so it's fine." So she dashed forward, leaving Lise behind. If she could kill Varus fast maybe this whole scenario would end. She didn't notice a water scooter quickly rushing to the Horizon Star, and then there was Varus, sans his Spirit. "I am Captain Varus!" He declared, brandishing his cutlass with that boyish roguish grin. "Soldier of the Republic, let's have a glorious fight that will be remembered in songs to come!" Irina brandished her own thrusting sword, knowing it would be unsportsmanlike to shoot him with her gun. "The same to you, sir." She dodged to the left and swung. "I won't let you win!"

The two clashed blades, without her light bearing gift, she wasn't able to get the upper hand. The duelist without her ability was just someone fighting at peak human condition, deflecting cuts left and right, trying to stab and being parried in several different locations, it was very close. One mistake and it would all be over. Naturally, the real Varus would have easily beaten her if she couldn't use her light bearing gift - this was very much an easier version. But then someone jumped up from the sea on a strange contraption undoubtedly built by Nino - Jace had arrived. "Varus, don't be so careless! That's my boat, don't let them wreck it!"

Varus chuckled, donning his red pirate hat with a smirk. "Sorry, blood brother, but you have to admit, this is an exciting battle! Nothing like a duel of swords on the Horizon Star, I'd say!" Watching the two interact was almost like watching history play back, back to when they really were close friends. "You're not allowed to die, Var, so I'm here to save your useless butt." Now it was two against one, and Jace pulled out his own pistol, one stolen from a Republic soldier's corpse in a previous battle. "Republic soldier, you're going down." Then Irina heard footsteps behind her, it was Emma. Irina grit her teeth - if she dodged, it meant Emma would have to take the hit. "You won't beat the Republic." She whispered and accepted the shot, her vision went red as she fell backwards, pain exploding all over her body, the bullet imbedding itself into her chest. With a feral cry Lise jumped down from the top, her Ornetian Katana as her weapon of choice. "Emma, she'll be fine, I need your help here, two against one is tough, even for me!" The Republic's Ace shouted, doing her best to keep the two brothers from finishing Irina off.

Emma's hands were still clean of blood, she was not flecked with crimson nor brain matter. She had at last reached the spot where she could hear Irina mid duel with Varus and a new comer. "Hang on Irina, I'm coming," Emma whispered. She had come up the wrong way, however. It was Lise who had been behind Irina, Lise whom Irina had taken the bullet for, selling her performance flawlessly. Emma froze, she was uncertain what she was doing. Her second weapon of choice was a pistol, there were two bullets in the barrel, a long silencer on the end. One, two, three, four, two bullets in each. Varus and Jace both fell, Emma's hands were shaking. She was flecked with blood, her eyes wide with terror. "Irina," Emma did not look at the corpse of her Father, nor the man who had been an older brother to her.

She knelt beside Irina and held her hand, "does it hurt?" In that moment, Lise did not exist. "Don't worry, I won't leave your side, not ever." Emma buried her head in Irina's chest, tears running down her cheeks. She was shaking something awful, as though she were the flicker of a flame dancing to and fro. Emma suddenly went numb, her vision going dark and her body limp. "What's going on!" Pablo yelled, suddenly panicked. He ran back to bed twenty two, attempting to disconnect Emma from the simulation manually. "I've never seen anything like this, a virus? But the SimulCrum can't get viruses." He pondered, circling the bed for answers. There were none on the surface, however Emma's vitals had raised considerably, Pablo raised that off, concluding that it was due to the fact that Emma had just made her first kill. Two bosses in the span of one minute, it was impressive to say the least.

"Can't we just disconnect her?" Pablo shook his head at the idiocy of his assistant. "The SimulCrum connects to the nerves, if we do that, it could paralyze her, or worse. We need to end the simulation, now." Pablo demanded, turning to his assistant. Pablo ran to the computer, shutting the simulation down. It was game over anyhow, with Jace and Varus now dead the rebellion heads had been metaphorically cut off, preventing the rebels from continuing to send their forces after the Republic. "What's going on? Why did they stop us like that?" Pablo glanced at bed twenty two hopefully, however Emma had not awoken. She seemed so peaceful, as though she were taking a midday nap. All around children roused, but bed twenty two remained still. "Emma?" Jonah asked, realizing that she was still laying down, her eyes closed.

"Where am I?" This room was not one that Emma recognized. This was not the SimulCrum launch nor the battlefield. She was contained within a cage, her surroundings nothing more than blinking lights. "Hey! Let m out!" Something hard like wind blew her back, the blinking lights faded, a door opening to reveal something that Emma had seen that she was not supposed to know existed. "You're her," the voice had a metallic grind which was harsh to Emma's ears. She winced and backed up, wondering if this was some sort of test. "Where am I?" She inquired, attempting to sound brave. "You are nowhere, in the heart of the SimulCrum, NoWhere." Emma was blown back again, this time hitting the panel of boards and lights. Wires snaked around her, binding her further against the metallic motherboard. "You will stay until an equal exchange is made. My life or yours, who will the humans choose?"

"Step into the light!" Two heavy footsteps rang in the silence, Emma gasped. "It's you!" She realized, the robot she had seen inside of the tank. "Yes, it is I."

Being shot wasn't exactly pleasant, but Irina was no stranger to death. She had died before - technically twice before, if you wanted to be specific. But disregarding that, it still hurt awfully just like every other time, the bullet to the chest, she could feel the blood coming up, and all her mind could think of was that this simulation was very realistic. She coughed and wheezed on the ground, struggling to get back up but unable to. Then Emma came at last while Lise was playing distraction, the battle was over. "I'm... fine." She said, spitting out the blood to the side so it didn't dirty Emma. "Are you... okay?" She asked gently, but before she got an answer Emma vanished once again winked out of existence. Lise stared back, eyes narrowing. "What the hell, this never happ-"

Then suddenly everything was black, and then reality returned. Irina coughed, rubbing her chest where she had been shot in wonder. Why was it over, wasn't there still more left to the battle? "Are you alright?" Cyrus asked, dashing over to her in an instant. "You got to feel death, that's - did it hurt?" Irina shook her head, she didn't care about that right now. "Emma, something weird happened." Lise looked pale and she pointed over to bed Twenty-Two. Everyone else had woken up, but Emma... was still just lying there, as if she was still in the simulation. Irina felt sick - something was wrong. If Emma was asleep, how was she able to exist? She shouldn't, if Emma was just sleeping she would have vanished then and there, unless... "Professor Pablo!" Irina shouted, no longer caring about rank or beck and call.

"She's still in the simulation!" That was the best conclusion she could come up with. Maybe it was a mistake to reveal this card so early, but she needed to, it was an emergency. Anyone suspicious of her would find this as more proof that she was a Spirit, but Miiko's well being mattered most right now, more than the mission. "Are you positive?" Pablo asked, his usual flounciness all but gone. Irina nodded, gritting her teeth. "Otherwise she would have waken up, turn it back on, put me back in, I'll break her out! Pablo sighed, and then he put down his pen. "It doesn't work like that... this might be... no, I need to do this.

Undoubtedly, class was dismissed. Irina was able to get permission to give Emma the bitter rabbit consisting of her rose, just in case something went wrong. Conductor Roz allowed it, a rare moment of mercy from the usually strict man. Meanwhile Pablo was in his office, alone, contacting Nino through the channel. It was he after all who helped her escape. After the battle of Everett Island, Pablo knew Nino wasn't going to find happiness here, she needed to get away from Capitol City. So as a friend, he gave her a way out - as well as a private channel so that they could communicate just in case there was an emergency. "Nino, I know you're there. Answer me, we have an emergency, it's about the SimulCrum." His lavender hair flopped as sweat ran down his brow. "One of our cadets might be in danger, I'll send you all the information you need. Let's work together, because you still owe me one favor."

"It is not what I want from you, but from the humans," the android spoke, his voice having turned awfully human like. "To shut me down," Emma blinked twice, rather confused. "Then why me?" She asked, the wires snaking up her clothes. Not in a perverted manner, but it felt as though the wires were biting into her skin. "You saw me, you recognized my potential for greatness and yet, irrevocable horror." Emma was not certain what to say, "I will inform the humans of the deal, of course." The android spoke, "remain quiet," Emma attempted to protest but a rather large wire slapped over her mouth and she was forced into silence.

"Humans," every screen within the underwater building suddenly flickered on. At first the shot only showed Emma, bound against the wall, wires snaking around her as though alive. "I have taken one of your own and implanted a virus within her." The camera whirled until it trained on the half built android. There were wires sticking out of his head, his flesh was a patchwork of peach colored skin and silver titanium. "Should you not give me what I want, the virus will attach itself to the human and she will be unable to return to your world. However, if you abide by my terms I will return her to you, unharmed. Present me with your offer, that is all," the screen zoomed back to show Emma, who was squirming against her bindings; a fly caught in the web of the spider. The screen blinked out, becoming black. A list of terms was displayed, flashing on every electronic surface.

The wire on top of her nose and mouth unplugged, Emma could speak and breathe once more. She gasped for air, leaning limply forward. In her eyes was nothing but fierce determination. "Why would you do this! I'm on your side! I'm part of the Republic!" Ronan turned very calmly towards her, "if humans want to wage wars then they must do it with other humans." Perhaps the humans had made the android a bit too life like. "But you're a robot! You don't have to feel or understand!" This was the wrong answer, the wires tightened, constricting around her throat. "And soon you will be too." The humans would have to choose, years of research and advancement, thousands of hours of meticulous planning and the lives of millions saved, or the rescuing the life of one puny human.

A wire attached to the back of her head, Emma gasped as something filled her body. Not pain per say, more like weightlessness. Numbers scrolled across her vision and for but a moment her eyes turned green. 1% flashed in bright blue when she closed her vibrant orbs. "What is that?!" She asked, slightly panicked. "That is the virus, should it reach one hundred, your body will no longer able to exist without the help of machines. In a sense, you will become an android." Her eyes burned with tears of anger. "Aren't you a bit of a hypocrite!" She bit back, "You'll save yourself but at the expense of another!"

"I am not disposing of you, nor am I killing you." The robot explained ever so calmly, "I am merely giving the humans a choice. Will they chose to shut me down and perhaps give another attempt at my resurrection, or will they give into my terms and save you. I am, after all, the only one with the power to stop the virus."

Irina and Lise both stormed down the hall to Pablo's room upon hearing the transmission. Neither of them were going to stand for this, and Pablo was already hard at work. Nino was initially going to refuse, but when she realized it was Miiko at risk, she couldn't, she wouldn't dare let such a horrible fate befall the princess of Yavin. "Nino." Lise said in surprise, seeing her face on the screen. "You traitor! Why are you relying on her, Pablo?!" Pablo frowned unhappily, twisting his tie. "Because we're both geniuses, if we work together, we could come to an answer together." Irina pretended not to care that Nino was on the case. "Just give in to the demands, that's my sister, that's Sam's sister! Isn't family important to the Republic?" Because Emma was holding the bitter rabbit, Prisca could summon her rapier if she needed to.

"Calm down." Nino warned her directly, because she knew Irina was inches away from doing something that would blow both her cover and Miiko's as well, not to mention Sam's. That would be three high tier agents lost because one couldn't keep her cool. "That's my sister"! The peerless ice princess was keeping the act up, even now. "We want to find if there's any other way first." Pablo explained, shaking his head. "But if there isn't, then we won't have a choice. Don't worry, if the virus reaches fifty percent, we'll give in to the demands of the robot." Self destruction was an odd demand to ask for, but Pablo would comply, no matter how much work went into building this substitute for human soldiers. It could save lives, yes, but he didn't want to give up family. "Sam values family more than love." Irina said, a clear threat. "He won't forgive you if you let his sister die, Pablo."

Of course this meeting wasn't just the four of them here, but also there were three others paying attention to the stream from the Capitol Hall where L, Sam, and Orianna were. "That's my sister, L. That's family, if I'm really a son to you, you have to save her." L grit his teeth. This project could save so many lives... but he couldn't sacrifice the life of one of his own. And Sam was one of his own, so by extension, anyone he cares about was under his banner as well. "Family is what matters most." L said, perhaps as one of his core tenets. But then the door was knocked on, and the board of Senators entered, with devilish smiles on their faces.

"You can't disable Project Ronan, you worked so hard on it! For just one human life, we can save millions!" They argued, willing to use their political clout if they needed to. They could freeze L's power here and now if it meant they preserved the project. "When you first proposed this project, we willingly gave you money, and now you're going to throw our money down the drain?" Another Senator clapped a hand on Sam's shoulder. "Sacrifice one for the sake of many. You can't ignore the big picture for just one life." Naturally, those in the undersea rainbow science labs were all hearing this. Pablo muted the microphone, so that the Senate couldn't hear.

"Nino." Pablo said softly. "If it comes to it, I'll give you full access to the system. I won't turn my back on Sam... but we can't anger the Senate. I'll need you to hack in and self destruct Ronan if there's no other answer... and then we can blame it on a Rebel terrorist attack." Would Nino accept this offer? "The Senate will know it's you, they might take Orianna to interrogate her about you, so it's your decision."

"I'll do it if it comes down to it," Nino replied with a nod. In the real world Emma was being swarmed by medics, they needed to keep her hydrated, they needed to monitor her for change, all while maintaining the delicate balance of the SimulCrum devices so that they didn't accidentally disconnect her and jolt the virus into 100%. "Don't worry, I'm not going to let this happen," Nino said, her voice ever so calm.

Ten percent, it was growing late and Emma was tired. Every time she drifted off she received a jolt of electricity to her spine. "Please, just let me sleep," Emma whimpered. "No," the robot replied. "I'm hungry," Emma said, "then think of other things," was the robot's response. "I'm bored," her head was whipped back, a wire began snaking up her nose. She coughed and retched, however nothing came up. "Stop-stop! I take it back," she could feel the wire move deeper, evoking a scream. "I was created to interrogate and torture your kind," Emma whimpered, "I can sense what you are, light bearer." She stiffened, hoping that this was no longer being streamed. "You're wrong," panic ensued. If they removed her glove in the real world they would see the light bearing mark.

If someone recognized the mark as Miiko's, her cover would be blown. "Am I child of light?" Her glove was torn in half, revealing the cat in its prissy little crown with a rose. "If you do not cooperate I will tell the humans about what you are," Emma had no choice but to stay quiet now. Her arms ached, her legs were sore, but there was no escaping. She hated the sensation of wires crawling up and down her body, of connecting to every nerve and fiber, a sense of violation so disgusting it made Emma shiver. "Why Ronan?" Emma asked at last, "why did they pick that name?" Ronan had been staring at the blinking lights for who knows how long. If Emma closed her eyes, she could see a great big 10% behind her lids.

"You are familiar with Ira Shoku I am sure," Emma nodded, you had to live underneath a rock if you didn't know who the tyrant Ira Shoku was. "Ronan was his first soldier, his ultimate weapon." The android flexed his fingers, or at least that's what Emma thought he was doing. "Someone is attempting to break in," he stuck his fingers into nodes in the wall, numbers scrolling across his eyes a he reinforced the protection on the strange place. Emma of course didn't understand what was keeping Irina from her, if the matter was killing off one stupid android, then wouldn't Irina have hunted him down and ended him? "Your thoughts are very loud child, your friends will not come for you here, they cannot touch my defenses." There were only two people who could and currently they were working together to break the code.

The android would not let it be broken, he would have his terms be met, or he would sacrifice the child. "You won't tell them will you? If you tell them, they'll kill me themselves," the android considered this. "No, I will not reveal this information," he decided, "so long as I receive what I want."

Letting Pablo and Nino handle the details, Irina stormed out. She was powerless in Pablo's office, there was nothing she could do there to help Emma, but there was certainly something else she could do. Lise followed her footsteps hurriedly. "Don't, don't do anything rash." Lise warned carefully. "Pablo's a brother to me, he won't fail us! Just believe in him, okay?" The naive child didn't want to think that maybe Pablo's stonewalling by the Senate would be enough to stop him. Something definitely had to be done here. Emma - Miiko - she was under Irina's protection! In front of the Project Ronan pod were Jonah and Cyrus, trying to push their way past the staff in order to get a good look at it.

"Move aside!" Lise ordered loudly, holding up her ID card. "As a member of the Elite Four, I outrank you, so step aside and let me and my friends through!" The science staff meekly raised their hands and backed away. "I tried calling my dad, to get his help for this." Cyrus offered, looking very much terrified. "He hung up, I don't know what's happening up on the surface." Jonah too was devoid of his usual jokes and banter, he was staring at the android intently. "All we need to do is kill it, right?" Irina tore a metal bar off of the wall, once used for helping hang things, now it was a weapon. "I'll do it, you all stay out of my way." But before she could, Lise held her arm back. "Iri, you can't! You can't!"

Irina turned to stare at her, pushing her away. "Why not? Emma's in danger, she's my family, I have to save her." It was all pretty clearcut for her, but Lise was adamant about this. "You can't, Pablo will take care of it! If you break it, you'll be out of my protection, the Senate, they'll hang you for breaking Capitol property, you can't!" Cyrus didn't even try defending his father. "I'm surprised you're here with us, Cyrus." Jonah noted, and Cyrus grunted harshly. "Right now I'm here as a cadet, and all the cadets here are my family. As a cadet, I'll do whatever I can to save Emma." Irina was a spirit, she was already dead, so she didn't care about what consequences may come for her.

But before Irina could break the glass someone else came to interrupt. Conductor Roz was here, and his face was stern, as if he had gone through losses before. He had to, if he was a military man, it was a part of the definition. "Don't stop me, Conductor. This is my sister." Irina muttered, ready to perform an act of sacrifice if it meant saving Emma. "Who said I'm here to stop you?" The Conductor replied gruffly, taking the metal bar from Irina's grip. "As a Conductor, my job is to make sure the cadets under my protection survive until they Graduate. The Senate will have a harder time punishing me than you, Reisser, so I'll be the one to do the honors."
