Decaying into the void❞

Rose was uneasy. She didn't like this, just being a sitting duck like this. But they couldn't just abandon Daisy here... but by sitting here, it meant enemies would eventually come. If Miiko was the target, then the smartest thing to keep the sick and injured safe would be to draw them away from the clinic and then fight them on favorable ground. "It doesn't hurt." Rose lied, thinking quickly. "Miiko, I have a plan. Can you trust me to keep you safe?" She looked to Jellyfish, silently giving her the order to stay here just in case, to keep everyone here safe. "Kennan, Sanaa, become something big and strong and wait for the signal." Rose's rapier flared in the dim light of the clinic, thanks to Nino's new electronic grid built in. "Mimi, let's go, so the clinic won't be at risk. I'll be with you, so there's nothing to fear."

And so the two left, the twins quietly following. Sanaa was uneasy, she very much preferred healing rather than dealing pain, but Kennan was far too jumpy, raring to get to action. Finally a squad of pirates were in sight, scouring the World Tree to try and find whatever their goal was. "There she is, the red haired girl!" One pirate shouted and Rose sneered, knowing her plan was going to work perfectly. "We run upwards!" Sanaa and Kennan morphed together to become a small, inconspicuous squirrel for now and Rose held onto Miiko's hand, dashing up the tree with great speed and agility. It was easy to focus and reflect the bullets the pirates shot at them and finally, they made it high enough. "Now." Right then, the Vorkov twins became an elephant and jumped onto the branch the pirates were on, snapping it, sending them tumbling down to their deaths. The twins quickly became an eagle and flew back to Rose and Miiko. Sanaa looked queasy, Kennan was grinning like mad.

As Fox missed with his fire and was kicked, Athena had turned momentarily to face him, giving Havran the time she needed to hop into the air and flip towards her opponent, landing on her shoulders, clinging hard. She pressed her hands onto Athena's face with a giggle. "Excuse me, I'm not a ten year old! I'm already thirteen and three quarters!" The child snapped haughtily. Now, what kind of hallucination should she make? "For your insolence, I'll give you punishment!" She injected it through her hands and on the ground at Athena's feet, the illusion of Stella's broken, bloody, naked corpse was in full view, but only for her. Fox could sense what the hallucination was, though, being Havran's spirit. "That's playing dirty." He said with slight disapproval. Havran giggled. "I'm a pirate, of course it is!"

Jace and Varus were having a duel of a life time, Gavin opened his mouth to shout something but the musket nudged against his head and Annie smiled as if she were just his big sister giving him a silent scolding. Varus missed his attack, so he did the spin but Jace was prepared for it, gun now held against his head. "H-hey, come on, we're brothers! Our fight's gotta be more flashy than that!" Then there was an explosion of sound, Annie had fired, she shot the gun right out of Jace's hands and then blew the smoke casually. "Sorry, but as a Spirit, I can't let you die, Caster." Fine, Varus was fine with that. Light glittered around the Red Fleet's leader, reflecting off of his bracelets and necklaces of gold. "We're here to borrow your light bearers for the most epic heist ever!" Varus spread his arms with glee. "We're going to do a jailbreak and rescue our comrades from Capitol City's Sand Prison, and we'll get cute little Stella out too!" His smile grew more dangerous then. "Miiko was just a bargaining chip, just in case you guys didn't feel like rescuing Stella."

Miiko sighed in relief when she was told that the wound didn't hurt. "I was so scared," Miiko admitted. "I thought you were going to leave me the same way that Stella left me," what happened if Spirits died? Did they pass on to the next world? Did they wander in purgatory for all eternity? Miiko didn't want to think about that, she didn't want to think about what could possibly happen if she lost Rose. If that happened, Miiko would never be able to go on another mission, she wouldn't get to save Stella. No one would ever trust her to do anything on her own, much less ever help with a mission. "I trust you," Miiko nodded, knowing that if anyone could keep her safe, it would be her spirit because Rose was always with Miiko. Rose addressed Kennan and Sanaa, then turned back to Miiko. "But Daddy told us to stay here and guard it!" It seemed that she wasn't going to get a choice this time. Rose tugged on Miiko's sleeve, pulling her out of the tunnel. Rose seemed to have memorized the way up to the surface, which greatly impressed Miiko.

Red haired girl? What appeared to be pirates were pointing and shouting, but Miiko's hair wasn't red. "It's pink! Are you blind?!" Miiko shouted in a huff, which she no doubt should have been the least of her worries at the moment. Rose grabbed Miiko, launching herself up the tree with an impressive amount of speed. "Wow! We're so high!" It goes without saying that Miiko may have a slightly skewed order of priorities. It was up in the tree that the battle really came to light. When Sanaa and Kennan merged, they broke off a branch of the World Tree. Miiko felt the strike to her chest, her heart thumping painfully. "No!" She screamed, watching as the tree branch fell. Sanaa and Kennan were quick to change their form, landing on the branch that Miiko and Rose were resting on. "No, you-you can't do that. You can't break the tree!" Miiko turned towards them, in the distance an audible rumbling was taking place. "Landslide..."

Up here they would be safe, but those below them would not. Jace could hear it, he could feel the ground shaking beneath them. Jace could not brave a glance at the tree, however, not if he wanted to stay alive. "You bastards, your men hurt the tree didn't they!" Were Varus's team of mutiny happy pirates really so daft that they would attack an island's very core? "We are not brothers!" Jace replied, "nor have we ever been brothers!" Jace could not kneel down to lift his gun, his hand was hot, but otherwise unhurt. At the mention of Varus's plan, Jace's eyes widened. "So you thought you could kidnap my daughter to go on this suicidal plan against the Republic? I don't think so!" Jace slashed again with his sword, giving Gavin and Callum a glance. The two of them got the message and slowly slunk off, disappearing into the darkness.

Athena did not freeze when the image of her dead daughter appeared at her feet. She did not hesitate nor get cold feet, but instead struck the child across the cheek. "Thirteen is still too young to be doing such awful things."

Rose knelt down to touch her forehead to that of Miiko's wanting to comfort and soothe her Caster in the same way Essie used to take care of her, back when they were sisters, back before Prisca ruined everything. "I won't leave you, not until the job is done." Rose said, trying to emulate how serene Essie was whenever she was trying to give comfort to the easily frightened Prissie. And just as promised, Rose's plan cleverly dispatched them of their current enemies, but for some reason the Vorkov twins and even Miiko wasn't happy about how they did it. "I had to, my ability doesn't work against a large group of enemies like that." Rose said, a tiny bit sourly. She was a spirit, she didn't know the ways of this world yet. "What happens when the branch is hurt?"

Sanaa answered, still looking sick to her stomach at the idea of having helped take a human life. Unlike Kennan who wanted to shed more blood, he loved his first kill, he wanted more. "It's not good." The nurse said nauseously, holding her stomach with a ginger frown. "It's never good, it depends... Aurum's supercomputer was hurt when L took over, and then the storm barrier broke." Ah, Rose remembered seeing how half the town was destroyed, the residential area at the base of the mountain. "Every island has a Monument, and they're put in place to protect the island and the humans." Sanaa very much looked like she needed to sit and to his credit, Kennan offered a helping hand. Rose stiffened, no, this most definitely was not good. "I'm sorry." She murmured, feeling awkward and the old self loathing monster was bubbling up to the surface again. "I'm awful, aren't I?" She was - no, she couldn't spiral now, not with Yavin still in danger. Her eyes went back to focus then.

"We need to finish this fight as quickly as we can. Kennan, take Sanaa back to the clinic and keep it safe." The sooner they kicked the pirates off Yavin, the sooner they could deal with the damage and maybe begin plans on rescuing Stella from Capitol City. "Where was Athena?" They would go help her first. "That way, follow the fire." Kennan pointed, taking Sanaa's hand because she didn't look like she could walk on her own. "Miiko, kick ass for me, okay?" Sure enough, there was smoke in the sky, it seemed a desperate situation was brewing near Athena. "St-stop acting all motherly!" Havran had screamed, rubbing her cheek. "Only my mom can scold me and she's - and - Fox! Kill her, burn this stupid crone to the ground!" Fox gave Athena an apologetic look and began to light the ground on fire. "Sorry, little miss's orders." He said with an almost friendly smile.

Meanwhile things were reachnig a head with Varus and Jace as they clashed swords, but it was lopsided because if Jace ever got an advantage, Annie could easily shoot him. Jace couldn't win, not without backup, which was what Gavin and Callum had gone back for. "Admit it, you want Stella back home, don't you?" Varus tried to sound tempting as he blocked Jace's attack and kicked out at his leg. "We're your best chance, if we combined forces, don'cha think?" He grinned with mock cruelty. "Don't tell me you're gonna let her rot in prison for the rest of her life! Especially with the elite four gone to Aurum, this is our best chance!" It was clear that Varus also held lots of regret for his decision that day.

Rose wasn't here forever, she was dead, Miiko was reminded. She couldn't babysit Miiko for all eternity, as much as Miiko was growing attached to her. All spirits were dead, eventually they would return to being dead, hopefully moving on to a better life in the next world. Miiko should have realized that Rose wouldn't be here forever, but to hear her spirit speak the words was admittedly, a little bit frightening. "If the World Tree is hurt, the island is hurt. Do you hear that?" The soft rumbling in the distance was growing steadily quiet. When the sun rose they would have to assess the damage and see what part of the island had collapsed. Hopefully it was in one of the less inhabitable areas. "We need to make sure the tree isn't hurt anymore," it wasn't Rose's fault that no one had ever explained these delicate matters to her.

The pirates below them that were alive appeared uneasy now that the core of the island had been injured. It was clear that they expected something bad to happen. "Do we just stay up here now?" Miiko got on her hands and knees to look down. They were at least two hundred feet up in the air. "How did you get us up here so quickly? The tree has small knobs, but I've never seen anyone climb it this high up before." Miiko's eyes sparkled when she next looked at her spirit. "You're amazing Rose!" Miiko decided, standing up on two feet to watch Kennan and Sanaa fly off. "Good luck you two!" Miiko turned to face Rose, her expression serious. "If we're gonna help Mommy, we have to go quickly. She's still weak, if she fights for too long, she'll collapse."

Kennan had said that her Mother was in the direction of where the fire had started up. "Rose, how do we get down?" If Rose were Stella, she would be able to jump them out of the tree and straight to the spot where her Mother was in trouble. This was not Stella, Miiko continued to remind herself. Why did Rose tap her forehead? Miiko wasn't certain, but it made her feel calm. "I just want save everyone," she admitted, allowing Rose to carry her back down the tree. By the time they reached her Mother, the fire had spread. She was holding two figures by the ears, however, which made Miiko hold her own ears in turn. "Ow," she winced, watching as her Mommy dragged the two of them behind her, away from the fire.

Jace was letting up nor weakening, he was in perfect form despite the fact that he had neglected the sword for quite sometime, unable to take it back up due to the guilt that ate at him alive for making Varus leave. It wasn't only his decision, however. Varus had pushed him, even suggesting it himself. "Of course I want Stella back, but this is a suicide mission!" Jace growled. "Stop acting like a child Varus, boats can't float in the middle of the desert!" They couldn't sneak an entire fleet into the desert in which the jail was kept, hundreds of miles away from any real civilization.

"It's not a good sound." Rose agreed grimly, trying not to spiral. She couldn't rely on Essie anymore, Essie was gone! She had to get control of her head on her own, without anyone's help. This was her punishment, to never be able to count on anyone ever again, to have to deal with her mental problems all alone. It was what she deserved, for turning everyone in, for getting everyone killed. "We should move quickly. Hold on tightly." Not even a hint of her mental turmoil poked through her tough act. Not even a shade of the memories of the torture she suffered until this personality was born could gleam to the surface, it was buried far too deeply.

With her ability, to predict, naturally coming with it was incredibly rapid reflexes that could account for split second timing. This was how it was so easy for Rose to hop down the knobs on the trunk to get back down to the base, as long as she was focused, this was easy for her. The bodies of the pirates were splattered, but there was no time, they needed to get to Athena's side quickly. "Let go of my ear, you idiot!" Havran shouted, while Fox was just sighing as if he didn't care too much about his ear. "We're trying to save Stella, you old bat, don't you see?! The Elite Four are all at Aurum, so why the hell are you all trying not to save her right now! The Captain is trying to apologize, and you morons are fighting?!" She was angry... but this was very interesting information, Rose thought.

Varus was having the time of his life here. It just felt so satisfying, being able to clash with Jace like this! But more than that, just seeing his face again, it made his heart feel a tiny bit more at ease. Jace was doing okay, even with Stella being captured, he was still fighting, even if he was a coward about it and not picking the big dramatic fights. "I've got connections, y'know, we've sailed around the whole world!" Varus shouted, sporting a happy grin as he and Jace struck and blocked and parried each other's swordplay. "I've already got the lookouts to agree to not see us, as long as I promise to liberate their previous homes that were taken over, they're glad to help!"

"Do you know, Jace?" Varus almost felt as if this was just like the old days, back when he and Jace really were like brothers, attached to the hip, never one without the other. "We attacked Capitol City earlier, we managed to chip the Imperial Statue." The core for that island, that massive desert island. "Now there's a constant sandstorm, and do you know where it's very easy to hide an army inside? A sandstorm, of course!" This was their best chance to save Stella, wasn't it? "It's been five years, Jace, it's time to own up to your responsibilities as a dad and save your little girl!" Varus grinned. "But if you still don't agree, I'll just go alone, and if the Red Fleet dies, don't regret losing the ally you could have had, okay?" Annie scoffed, as if the idea of her letting Varus die was insulting, but said nothing to interrupt the duel.

"Well perhaps you shouldn't have tried to kidnap my daughter," Athena retorted, "and then attempt to attack me." Athena would not have struck them if they hadn't sneaked up behind her and tried to make her suffer from delusions. The thing is, if you wanted someone to suffer from delusions, you had to make sure they didn't already have them. That was what Athena had been suffering from, an illness that tricked her mind into believing terrible things. Some days Athena couldn't even get out of bed. The memory and vision were the first things to go, as the illness attacked her brain, she would continue to deteriorate. Thanks to Sanaa, they had managed to reverse many of the effects, which was why Athena was standing before them, holding their ears. "Miiko," Athena beamed, seeing her daughter. "Mommy!" Miiko ran forward to receive her Mother's hug. "Rose, I'm glad you're okay," Athena gave Rose a pat on the head, one full of affection.

"I'll listen to you, if you call off your forces. I'm more reasonable than my husband," Athena took a step forward, wobbling. "Hang on Mommy!" Miiko closed her eyes, summoning up a chair with wheels. "Here, sit here," she eased the chair forward and tried to push, but Miiko was not strong enough. "Rose, can you push it?" Miiko looked up at her spirit with wide Bambi eyes. Athena sank into the chair gratefully, "thank you girls. I might have overdone it a little," Athena sighed, her two different colored eyes glistening in the light of the fire. Along the line of flames were what looked like ants working to put the fire out. They were in fact rebels dressed in black, carrying icy water from the ocean to stop the fire from spreading to the World Tree. If one of those flames so much as licked the base, they would all be doomed.

"That does sound like a good idea," Athena said as they rolled up behind them. "Daddy!" Miiko called to him, waving. Jace didn't waver, his gaze remaining on his opponent. "Put the swords down you two, before I make Miiko make them disappear for good." Athena threatened, leaning back in her seat. "Put yours down first," Jace growled to Varus, not trusting that snake. "Now, someone told me about a break out plot for our daughter." Jace stiffened, "you're not going to believe him, are you?" Miiko tensed up, but not with fear, excitement. "There's already a plan to break Stella out?" She squeaked, grabbing Rose's sleeve in excitement. "Miiko, go back up to the house, the adults have much discussing to do." Athena directed, her tone implying that they would be talking and not sword fighting.

It was only in that moment that Miiko realized how tired she was. "Judging by the position of the moon and the stars, it's 3 AM." Miiko rubbed her eyes, taking Rose's hand so that the two of them could return to the tree house. Gavin and Callum appeared, having been following them the entire time. "Ready to go up?" Gavin asked, opening up the door to the transport up the tree for them. "I am tired, my nightgown is all dirty though!" Miiko yawned, leaning her head on Rose's shoulder.

They were back in bed now, the battle was over, the adults were conferencing. It was strange, everything that had happened, and Prisca was more exhausted than she wanted to admit. From what it seemed, she was going to need a whole lot of rest, especially with her new injury. The stitches had torn during the hopping, hopefully no one would notice and they would heal. "I'm sorry for hurting the tree." Rose said honestly, lowering her eyes as she sat on the edge of Miiko's bed. There was faint singing in the distance, Daisy had finally woken up and was no doubt soothing her Caster with song. She looked away, a question was on the tip of her tongue. She wanted to ask if there was still going to be a place for her once Stella was rescued... but she was scared of the answer. "Good night, Mimi, y-you did well today." She closed her eyes then and waited.

Just the idea of a Library Club was terrifying, joining a club in general, Prisca didn't want it. But Essie had pulled her out of the bathroom with a big smile on her face, one with eyes that held a very different emotion, but Prisca didn't want to deal with the fact that she disappointed her twin little sister, so she ignored it and decided to believe that all was well between the two. "Let's go, we were invited, sis." Essie said with a wink, pulling Prisca along, the two girls navigated the halls. "It would be rude not to at least show up!" In all honesty, Essie was excited for a chance to meet new people and make new friends because admittedly, it was hard to have to make friends when every waking moment you had to be on watch for when your sister might have another freak out moment.

They opened the door to the library then, revealing a whole bunch of people at the table, at least ten. Prisca instantly felt the fear creep back in but Essie's grip tightened on her before she could hesitate or try to pull away. "Hello, we were invited by Miss Burns!" Essie said in her usual charming voice. "She invites us to the Library Club!" There was someone there that stood out more than the others, a boy, maybe a year older, in a rebellious sort of leather jacket and flaming red hair. "You're the Hart sisters, right? He grinned, chewing gum, looking like he's trying to act all cool. "Welcome to the club, we're glad to have you here." Since this was their first time, it was more like an initiation than anything, they weren't to know about the prohibited anti-war books yet.

"There's a seat next to me, and I'll pull up another one for you, so you can sit together." He winked at them and Prisca burned with shame. "I-I-I... I-'m..." What was she even trying to say? "Come on." Essie sounded a tiny bit exasperated but Prisca decide to gloss it over and pretend Essie was excited to start meeting everyone. And Essie sat herself right next to this boy who introduced himself as Callum. "I didn't expect a guy like you to like reading!" Essie giggled and Callum made a self conscious chuckle, hands in his pockets. "Well, y'know, sometimes the world of a book can be more exciting than any bike ride, right?" But Prisca could only stare at the two, not even listening to them debate what book to start reading as an introduction for the newcomers. What was this tense feeling in her chest, waiting to explode?

Why did she feel so sick thinking about Essie and Callum becoming closer?

Stella placed her hand on top of the spot, holding down the piece of cotton in order to stop the bleeding. They had drawn her blood, something they did often with light bearers. "Th-they d-d-do it to-to you t-t-to-too?" Yui asked, looking at Stella's arm with a frown. "Yeah, they do it to all of the light bearers. Apparently it's to check on our light levels. They don't want to kill us, just contain us for all eternity in max security prison," Yui made a strange sound, a cross between a giggle and a cough; well that was a first. "Say, why don't they ever bring you food down here?" Yui pointed to the tube tapped to the side of her face. "I-I g-g-get it thr-through he-here," there was a bag hanging on the IV pole, a few really. Yui looked so pail and fragile, it was hard to believe that she was the one who had caused the Calamity. "F-f-food go-goes thr-thro-through he-here," Yui pointed to the bag of opaque white liquid that resembled milk.

"Th-this on-one i-is sy-syn-synthe-synthetic light. Be-bec-because my l-light le-levels are low." Yui was behind this glass so that she couldn't absorb light from anyone. "I-I ha-have-haven't be-been out-outside in-" she stopped and hiccuped from the way she breathed. "In a-a lo-long ti-time," Yui hiccuped again. "How long?" Yui counted on her fingers, holding them up since it was faster than speaking. She hadn't been outside in fifteen years. "L-L f-found me..." Yui trailed off, it was clear that speaking was hard with the stutter she had developed from not speaking for over one hundred years. "He-he fou-found me o-on my-my hom-home is-island and-and bro-brought m-me he-here." Yui failed to mention whether or not she had wanted such an event to happen. "I-I ha-had no-no mor-more fo-foo-food." Stella hugged her knees, the two of them had been sharing the small bed due to the fact that there wasn't enough room in the room for a second bed.

Yui was so small that she didn't seem to mind and Stella was used to sharing a bed with Miiko whenever Miiko had nightmares. "I think you would get along really well with my little sister," Stella said at last. "She's a little bigger than you, with pink hair. At least, I think her hair is pink. Honestly, it's been so long, my memory of my family is starting to get fuzzy." Yui grabbed Stella's hands, sitting upright. "Y-you ne-need to rem-remem-remember the-them!" Stella was taken aback by this sudden proposition. "Pl-please do-don't ev-ever for-forget the-the peo-people tha-that are imp-important t-to y-y-y-you." Stella smiled ever so slightly, "I will do my best not to." She ruffled Yui's hair, the two of them laying down the same way they had been since Yui had invited her into the bed.

"Yui, have you ever loved anyone?" Stella asked. Yui shook her head. "I-I can-can't fe-feel lov-love f-f-or-for on-one pers-person. I-I lo-love the-the whol-whole wor-world equal-equally." Stella frowned, "even the ugly parts of it?" Yui nodded, slowly falling asleep soon after. Stella, however, was wide awake. She carefully rose from the bed, going to the one blind spot in the corner where Yui usually got dressed and lifted up the pile of laundry. Underneath was a loose piece of concrete and under that, dirt. Stella had begun to dig a hole out, knowing it would take a while, but she was determined to dig it.

In a different level of reality to the real one, two figures sat in a strange porcelain room decorated in checkerboard squares on the floor, giving off the feel of being some otherworldly pavilion given the windows that showed various stills of the game board. The Elite Four at Aurum, Prisca and Miiko in bed together, Stella and Yui in the Sand Prison, but the game was suspended for the moment because one player was currently trying to think up his move. There were two players, of course, one was a girl with black hair, and clear violet eyes, the other being almost an embodiment of the darkness. How did this world exist? Was it all entirely symbolic? Or was it real in a way mortals would never be able to perceive?

"So our opening moves are all done, it seems." Mizuki said with a shrug, glaring across the table with a fanged grin. Their pieces were scattered about the game board, but neither of them had crossed into the other side just yet. Thanos glanced at it seemingly without a care. "We've had a few little scuffles, we both took a few losses, but given the way the board is set up, this is gonna be our first real fight, isn't it?" It was true. Of course, Mizuki needed to create a big fight and she needed to win it because without a doubt, she needed to regain her Queen piece, to steal it back from Thanos's trap. She had been so confident in her Queen piece but then so easily it was taken, just like that. "This isn't even a challenge, little girl." Thanos sounded almost bored, but Mizuki knew he was enjoying this as well.

The Goddess leaned forward with a grim sort of smile. "For the past hundred years, we've both been bound here." She said, looking at what was both the game room and her prison all at once. After she scattered into ten pieces she used the last of her light to trap both her soul and the soul of Thanos, the one who won the first game. But he only won the first game because Mizuki hadn't ascended and become a player until it was already too late. Now they were fighting on equal ground. "Ah, but you aren't my first opponent. My memories are hazy, but I do recall another incident..." Another endless game, billions of games, but that one was against Shoku... and that one Mizuki had entirely different pieces. She still wasn't quite used to the current ones just yet.

"You're just a mortal girl." Thanos sounded fierce, as if he wanted this to be over and done with already, but Mizuki wasn't going to let that happen. "You have no right to imprison me here." But Mizuki wiggled her finger with a smile. "I'm the Goddess now." She explained, eyes going wide. "If you think I'll let you give Yui a sad ending, you're mistaken." Thanos scoffed, not taking this seriously at all, but Mizu knew he was forced to stay here, there was no way he'd escape the game board. "I'm still surprised you didn't bring back your precious family, your strongest pieces." The Goddess didn't waver in her determination, but her eyes betrayed a certain loneliness that wished she could have gone with them. "I'm letting them rest in peace." She whispered softly, and then grinned. "Now, let's go! Mizu's special Queen-piece rescue strategy, start!" The battle of the Sand Prison was soon to begin!

"Absolutely not! I refuse!" Miiko winced, turning over in bed. Jace was standing in front of her door, Athena in front of him with her arms crossed. "If anyone deserves to rescue Stella, it's Miiko." Miiko blinked, wondering why they were at it so early in the morning. She propped open her door, glancing up at the two figures standing outside. "What's wrong?" Her meek voice brought the fighting to a stop. Jace whirled around, expression softening when he lay eyes upon his daughter, who was still wearing her dirtied nightgown from the battle so early in the morning. It was close to noon now, Miiko had slept in thanks to the early expedition. "Rescue Stella? Am I going? Can I go?" She stood up straighter, door now open all the way to reveal her full body. "Yes," Athena replied. "You, Gavin, and Daisy will be going with Captain Varus to break out the light bearers from the desert jail." Athena knelt down, tucking a stray strand of hair behind Miiko's ear. Jace crossed his arms, "I don't trust Varus, I don't like the idea of Miiko going."

"I can go! Rose can protect me! I can watch over myself too!" Miiko stood tall, puffing out her chest. "I want to help!" Jace hesitated, he drew Miiko into a hug. "Here," Jace placed something in Miiko's hand. "If you're ever in trouble, use this." Miiko looked at what Jace had given her, it was heavy and Miiko didn't enjoy the sensation of the metal on her skin. "Jace, no!" Athena took the gun from Miiko, unloading it and placing it on the table. "Miiko does not need a gun, she has her knife, she has her spirit. She'll be just fine. Miiko sweetie, go get packing, you need to be down by the docks before two." Two? That gave Miiko two hours! She bound back inside of her room and put on her necklace that the rose was attached to. "Rose, put some clothes on! We're going to the Desert!" Miiko excitedly began stuffing things into her bag, nearly forgetting her hairbrush. She pulled on a skirt and shirt with suspenders, then her knee high socks and finally, her jacket. "Girls, come eat lunch before you leave!"

While lunch may have seemed tense to an outsider, Miiko was more excited than anything. She was bouncing in her seat, finishing up her stew with ease. Miiko packed some snacks, knowing that she would get hungry, and then hugged her parents. "We'll be back before you know it with Stella!" Miiko beamed, then took Rose's hand and led her outside where the others were waiting. "Want me to take your bag?" Gavin offered, reaching out. Callum snorted, "if you keep treating her like a Princess then it's gonna get to her head." Miiko kicked Callum in the shin. "I am the Princess!" She huffed, "Come on Rose," Miiko took off her bag so that Gavin could carry it, the six of them piling into the car that would take them down.

It was the biggest boat Miiko had ever seen, with a mast of the color red and the hull a peeling crimson. "Wow," Miiko gawked, looking at the flags that were tied to the top. One from every land they had ever crossed swords with. Miiko noticed there was an absence of any rebel flags, which was probably a good thing. "Have you ever seen a ship so big in your entire life?" Miiko asked Rose as they stepped onto what used to be the world's biggest cruise ship. "I'm surprised that this hunk of junk can still float," Callum said, now walking with a slight limp, which Miiko was very satisfied about.

With a bright light, Rose appeared, as usual, completely naked. "Good mo-uaaah?!" Not as per the usual, Athena and Jace were here too, and they were very much able to see. "Y-yes, clothes, r-right, um, um..." The girl was blushing horribly, she didn't sign up for this! Yes, it wasn't her real body but it sure looked like it, so it was just as humiliating! Why was it like this? Why were Spirits always summoned naked? Why did Daisy and Callum never fell weird about it? In any case Rose got herself hastily dressed and tried very hard to compose herself for the journey to Capitol City, where a small seed of both excitement and anxiety welled up. "Sc-screw off, Callum, she can be a princess if she wants." Callum's face twisted in displeasure - most likely, even as allies, they would never get along. But at the very least they both knew how not to let their personal feelings get in the way of the battlefield. When it came down to it, Prisca and Callum trusted each other to protect the other's back - but that didn't mean they had to like each other.

"Welcome to the Red Fleet!" Varus said with a cheerful grin, a new bandage decorated his cheek. While he never managed to land a hit on Jace, Jace did get to draw blood on his old brother, just barely grazing his cheek. It was a loss for poor old Varus, but his heart was beating with fiery passion. They would get to rescue Stella, and then things would really get exciting, wouldn't it? "Th-thank you." Rose said, far too timidly. Daisy was walking around and seemed to be okay now, she was out of it for a while but now she was back. "This is exciting, isn't it, Jelly? Come, let's go look at the horizon, it's sure to be beautiful." Gavin hoisted the bags over his shoulder with effort. "Where's the Princess's room?" He asked Varus, trying to look tough and cool and be a reliable big brother.

Varus smiled keenly and looked over to Havran who pouted sourly at them for whatever reason. "Havran, why don't you show them the way? You could do to make friends with people your age, you know." Havran stomped her foot in a childish tantrum, it was clear that she looked down on everyone here. "I'm a genius thirteen year old, I don't need brats as friends!" In trying to be mature, Havran only made herself look more childish. "Come off it, Havvie, admit it, you're just shy." Fox said with a half joking chuckle and Havran pinched his butt in anger. "Sh-shut, shut up!" She stomped forward and lead the way. "Tch, just follow me and don't be slow, I'll take you to the guest rooms!"

And there they were, three guest rooms for three pairs of Caster and Spirit. "It's go time! This is going to be a battle of ultimate destiny!" Varus grinned, kneeling down in front of Miiko as if searching to see if she recognized him from the past. "Do you remember Uncle Varrie, princess?" Rose suddenly felt an urge to wrench Miiko closer to her, which amused the captain very much. "Jace doesn't trust you yet, and as her Spirit, neither do I." Rose said in a quiet, yet threateningly clear voice.

When Miiko stepped onto the boat should realized that she couldn't feel the swaying of the boat. It was as though she had stepped from solid land to the next piece of earth. "Wow," Miiko marveled. "It sure is big," Varus and Havran were both present to greet the light bearers, one looking happy, the other had her arms crossed as though she were not happy seeing these rebels aboard the vessel of the Red Fleet. Miiko craned her neck to look up and down and all around. They entered through the a large hole in the hull, which was now being closed with a heavy metal door. "I've never been on a ship this big before." Miiko admitted, turning towards Rose. "Have you?" Did they have ships this big in Rose's time? Were they common things? Miiko wouldn't know of course because that had been one hundred years ago and she was nearly sixteen!

"You're thirteen?" Miiko asked, pointing a finger in the direction of Havran. "But you're as tall as me!" Miiko had thought that Havran would be older, or perhaps Miiko was just short? Hmm, it was definitely the latter. Miiko and Rose trailed along after Havran, with Miiko gawking at every generator and hydro pump. The elevators worked on hydraulics, meaning water powered them, which was how they could go up to floor seven without so much as a bump. "This is our room?" Miiko inquired with confusion when they stepped inside of the elevator. The doors had opened on their own, which Miiko thought was amazing. Then it began to move, Miiko letting out a small squeak in response and clinging to Rose. "Wha-what's happening?!" Miiko asked, watching out the glass window as the elevator moved upwards.

When it stopped and the doors opened to release them, Miiko rushed out. "That was close," she muttered, trailing a bit behind them until they reached the door to the guest room. Miiko and Rose had a room all to themselves, with their own bathroom and everything! "Wow, I've never had my own bathroom," she couldn't wait to take a bath in there. Did the water run? Would Miiko need to boil it if she wanted to take a hot bath? Miiko was fawning over the balcony when Varus came out and knelt before her. Miiko placed her hands on her hips, wondering what was going on.

"Uncle Varrie?" Miiko scratched her cheek in thought. "A little maybe," Rose grabbed Miiko protectively, glaring at Varus. Rose was clearly taking Jace's side with an inherent mistrust in Varus. Miiko, however, wasn't sure. She didn't have any bad memories of Varus, but that didn't mean he wasn't a bad guy. "But you're the reason Stella was taken." Gavin emerged from the room, arms crossed. "Now he's going to return what he stole."

Rose was quiet as she wondered what the best way to answer this question was. No, she hadn't big on a boat this big before... but she also wasn't all that surprised about it either, she wasn't craning her neck or looking around in awe or anything. "No, I haven't." She said honestly, but not offering up any more information. A part of her, the Prisca hiding behind the Rose, tried to cry out but stifled and silenced herself as usual, wondering when Miiko would ever notice. Once Stella came back, Rose had a feeling she was going to lose her place, lose her right to exist. After all, even in her time period, she was the unwanted one, she was the weird, the awkward one. It was natural to be replaced, wasn't it? She would just go quietly and silently.

Havran most definitely looked annoyed with Miiko's assertions. "It's because you're just a shrimp!" She spat and then her Spirit, Fox, whacked her on the head. "Be polite to our guests, you want to make friends, don't you?" Havran glared at her Spirit and pinched his butt again, making him squeak from the pain. "No I don't, so shut up!" Her cheeks reddened however, so maybe Fox was being truthful after all. "It's an elevator, don't be afraid." Rose said to Miiko just in case such a thing frightened her. A relic of her time, it gave both Callum and Daisy somewhat solemn feelings as well. It was obvious that no matter how much they might get along with their Casters, they were Spirits, they too were fossils of the past. They didn't belong - none of them would, and once their jobs as pieces was finished, they would be taken off of the game board because this isn't where they were supposed to be. A hundred years and more late to the afterlife party.

No matter what, Rose's job was to protect Miiko. Maybe Varus had good intentions, maybe he didn't, but it couldn't be denied that he was the leader of a third faction, and that was always a messy spot to be in when in a war like this. "I used to give you piggy back rides, little Mimi." Varus said with half a grin, the other half seemed almost sad, nostalgic. "I baked bread for you when you almost drowned, they were laced with a fancy fruit from south in Contralto, coconuts." Rose's eyes narrowed, she didn't care about the past, all that mattered was the present. "Even so, there's a reason you're an exile." Stella, of course. Havran looked genuinely angry this time instead of just being childishly tossing a fit.

"You don't understand anything about strategy, you idiots!" She stomped her foot with more force this time, looking hurt that her Captain was so disliked. "It was either let Stella get taken or give up on Ondern and sell it's people out, Captain promised to protect Ondern, he didn't have a-" Before she could keep ranting Varus clasped his hand over her mouth, muffling his defender. "It's okay, they'll like me once the epic journey gets to full force!" Varus grinned and the ship began to move, Annie taking the help. "Other ships, sail in formation!" The Spirit called, firing her gun in the air as the signal. Through the glass Jace, Athena, Sanaa, Kennan, and Nino were all there, watching the ship fleet leave.

"I'm not afraid!" Miiko protested in reply. She had just been startled it all, but Miiko was glad to be out of the elevator. Now that they were in their room, Miiko was attempting to puzzle out who this man was and what his true intentions were, because while she could recall bits and pieces, there were also strange gaps in her memory. That was likely when she had been blind, her brain not remembering that period thanks to the trauma. "I remember bread, but I was blind." Miiko replied, wondering if Varus recalled that. She should probably explain to Rose what she meant by that. Miiko turned around, facing Rose so that Rose's arms were now clutching her back instead of her front to keep Miiko away from Varus and to protect her. "Um, ten years ago or so, I'm not sure, I'm not good with numbers, I went blind."

Miiko should probably start from the beginning. "Stella and I were playing on the rocks by the water one day before I knew how to swim and I fell in. I was fine after, but a mark appeared on my hand, apparently that was the beginning of the light bearing mark!" Was that how Varus had known that Miiko would eventually become a caster? Or had he simply made a wild guess? "I don't remember how much longer after, but I went blind and lost all my hair, but then, it came back and they were both a different color!" It was a phenomenon that no Doctor could explain. The sudden mutation had been guessed far and wide by many different rebels. Some suggested pollution in the lake, while others thought that there was a sudden change in the genetics due to the awakening of the light bearing mark. "Stella had a real light bearing mark after that! She could jump from one place to another!"

"What Miiko means," Gavin interceded, "is that Stella can teleport." Miiko nodded her head, "She was like lightning! There one second and then, bam! Gone the next!" Miiko added hand motions so that they could get the full effect. It was then that Havran yelled at them about strategy and Miiko glowered. "There's always a choice! You could really save both if you wanted to!" Miiko crossed her arms, Varus stopping the miniature spat to announce that they were leaving the port. Miiko ran back out to the balcony to wave to her Mother and Father until they disappeared from view. "Come on Rose, let's go up top and watch the view!" Miiko grabbed Rose's wrist and ran towards the elevator bay. She preferred the stairs, but the magic platform was faster. She pushed the highest number and waited eagerly for the elevator doors to open.

They made an immediate left, the glass sliding open for Miiko and Rose like magic. Up top, the pools were empty, the slides in ruin, but Miiko didn't know what they were for anyhow. She went to the railing, looking down at the ocean. "We're so high up!" Miiko giggled with glee, spreading her arms out to the side so that she could catch the wind. "Apparently it's hot in the desert, even though it's winter!"

Prisca felt a little bit uneasy when Miiko began speaking of the past, but she listened carefully to what her Caster had to say. It was nice, just listening to her talk, and Rose once again closed her eyes to try and examine exactly what her relationship was with Miiko. It wasn't exactly like a big sister to a little sister, was it? If it was, then there was no room for her, was there? "It must have been hard, blind and hairless." Rose murmured softly, her hands gentle as they guarded her from Varus who had gone to deal with Red Fleet business. "But I'm glad it's over now." Miiko was as exuberant as ever now, full of energy, life, and a hidden strength that mostly no one wanted to acknowledge existed. Except for Varus, apparently, who seemed to have high expectations of them.

Was it bad that the first thing Rose thought of in terms of Stella's ability was the compatibility of their abilities against each other? The ability to teleport, against the ability to predict. Really it seemed stacked completely in Prisca's favor, didn't it? All she had to do was predict where Stella would be and then stab and kill, so simple. In practicality, it wasn't nearly that simple. She knew because she fought against one of the Japanese Imperial Army's soldiers before, a certain Xavier, he could jump around so quickly it was difficult to reflexively strike according to your predictions. "I hope to practice against her one day..." Rose said with a slightly off-kilter smile. She hated fighting, she hated killing... but maybe the more battle-happy side of her was the exact opposite in terms of this sort of thing. Rose shook her head and smiled. "She must have been really strong, huh?" Classic Rose, really, commenting but never offering any insight of herself in a conversation.

An adventure through the cruise ship later, Rose and Miiko were at the deck of the ship. They weren't alone here, Jellyfish and Daisy were here as well, one was appearing to be asleep in a lump, the other was humming softly under her breath. "Some deserts are cold, though." Prisca murmured, trying to think of an example. "T-technically, tundras count as desert, because they're still dry and arid, but just cold instead." Daisy grinned and looked over. "Like Siberia, not that any of you know what that is." She paused to think. "Ah, all of Siberia was submerged, Rosey, just so you know." So much of the world had changed since the Calamity, it still made Rose dizzy to think about.

"It's nine hours from Yavin to Capitol City, so try not to get too bored, okay?" Daisy seemed perfectly at ease on the ship for some strange reason, and that was when Prisca realized it. "You were here before." She said softly and the idol nodded with a mischievous wink. "Yup! I was a guest here on an idol tour before, back before the Calamity. Though it's all red now and there's a few changes..." She glanced at the dilapidated pool and ruined attractions that had decayed over the decades. That was when Jellyfish crawled over to Miiko and pressed her head against the pinkette's side, closing her eyes once again in contentment.

"I am too," Miiko brushed her hair over her shoulder, giggling. "I think it looks better pink. Before it all fell out, it was an ugly brown!" It was true, what seemed as though it were a lifetime ago, her hair had been a light brown, almost beige color. Stella was born with wild red hair, her parents used to joke that it was the mane that got them into trouble as children. Stella stood out and shone against whatever darkness attempted to swallow her with that red hair of her's. It was scary, as much as Miiko tried to play it off. That time when she had suddenly gone blind and thought that she would never get to see again made Miiko shake ever so slightly. Varus had disappeared, Havran going with him. If Varus felt anything during that time period he failed to mention it, which made Miiko suspicious of who he claimed to be. If he had been there, then why were Miiko's memories of him so murky?

"Stella is the strongest!" Miiko replied with glee, "I can't wait for you to meet her, Stella is gonna be so happy that I have a real friend." Rose wasn't the replacement older sister she thought herself to be of course, she was a friend, a friend that Miiko could tell anything to, who Miiko could boss around or lean on when she needed to cry. Not that Miiko ever cried because she was brave and strong like Stella of course! "I'm sure Stella would love to practice against you, you have a cool ability too, you'll prove to be a challenge." Miiko placed her hands on her hips, "I can battle Stella now too since I'm a light bearer!" Miiko held up her hand proudly to show Rose the light bearing mark that intertwined their fate. "I hate having to hide it, it's so pretty."

It was brisk outside, the ship had to navigate through chunks of ice, but Miiko didn't mind. "There are frozen deserts?" Miiko gasped, placing a hand on her chest. "Whenever someone says desert, my mind automatically flits to dessert. I wonder if they have any here?" Miiko went into her pocket, but she had packed her snacks in her bag that Gavin had placed in her room. Oh well, Miiko would just have to wait for snacks. Miiko jumped at the sound of a voice, she had not realized that Daisy and Jellyfish were here as well. "What's a Siberia?" Jellyfish shrugged her shoulders, it was clear that she didn't know either. Was it a place? An island? It sounded as though it was full of snow. While Miiko did enjoy the snow, the frozen wasteland of Aurum had been much too cold for her liking.

"Nine hours?" Miiko waved her hand, "that'll be a cinch!" She chirped, "It was eight hours to Aurum and I slept through most of that, it's already almost four, so we'll be sleeping through majority of the journey." Miiko pat Jellyfish's head. "Jelly, why don't we explore?" There were plenty of things to see, from the dilapidated water slides to the empty pools, Miiko wanted to see it all. "You know what we should do? We should play hide and seek!" Miiko hadn't played that game since Stella was home, but the structures were large enough to hide in and between, giving them a great playing field.

The current day light bearers seemed to work under a very different system, didn't they? It was almost like whatever was the source of light before was different from the current source now, as if the one in control now knew about the darkening problem and came to a solution of sorts, making their powers less light but also less susceptible to corruption at the same time. "Go and explore, Daisy and I will be right here." She said with a gentle smile. With that, Daisy and Prisca were given a chance to talk on their own. To their surprise, Callum sauntered up to join them, it seemed as if he too, wanted a chance to talk to those that remembered the past. "Are you ever going to tell her who you are, Rosey?" Daisy asked in a nonjudgmental voice, looking over at her curiously.

Yeah, it was going to have to happen eventually, wasn't it? "No." Rose muttered. "No, I won't. She'll never like me if she knew." She clenched her fist, wanting to cling to their current friendship even though she knew it would soon vanish once Stella was rescued. "If you really think that girl's that shallow, you don't know her well at all." Callum looked indignant, as if angry for Miiko's behalf. "I'll never forgive what you did, but she's not the type to judge you for your crime." His eyes blazed and Prisca couldn't figure out what he was getting at at all. "Everyone has sins they want to hide." Prisca said evasively, looking down at the water, wondering what would happen if she just jumped in and submerged herself. "...No, not really." Daisy said, and Callum nodded to back her up. "Our Casters know everything about us, because y'know, we trust them, unlike you."

Eventually time passed and it was still dark when they landed at the dock on the uninhabited side of Capitol City. A large army hopped off of their boats and then some pirates were left behind to make sure the ships were hidden safely for the time being. "See that?" Varus pointed with an eager grin. "It's the sandstorm, I told ya." The sandstorm - before there wasn't one, but ever since the Imperial Statue was chipped, it could no longer prevent the eternal swirling of harsh blinding sand any longer. "It's... dark and storming... it's the perfect cover." Varus nodded with a hooked grin. "And the Sand Prison is right up ahead. You know what else is there?" Rose knew very well.

Havran said it for them. "Stella." She whispered lowly, but everyone knew just how significant this was. Rescuing Stella would be a turning point in the conflict... but Rose was probably the only one not excited about this rescue. She was afraid of being tossed aside, of being abandoned, of Miiko choosing Stella over her... because she knew just how important Stella was to her Caster. Jellyfish stumbled against Varus's leg, rubbing her eyes sleepily. "I'll carry her." Varus said with a grin and then Havran frowned. Fox lifted her up easily and she thrashed. "Shut up! I didn't want to be carried, I can walk myself, you stupid Spirit!" Fox laughed despite her complaints. "A Spirit can only act as his Caster demands." He said in a sing song, joking voice. Rose offered her hand to Miiko wordlessly, it was time to march.

Miiko and Jelly held hands while they ran off to find something to do. Hide and seemed to be the best option, which Miiko could tell based on the way that Jellyfish nodded so exuberantly. "Alright, I'll count first and you hide!" Miiko turned around and covered her eyes. "One... two... three... four..." She counted aloud so that Jellyfish could hear her. "Twenty! Ready or not here I come!" Miiko looked around a tier of snow covered benches, but Jellyfish wasn't there. "Hmm, where could she be hiding?" Miiko spotted something out of place, what looked to be a plastic trash bin had been turned upside down, the trash scattered around it. With a gloved hand, Miiko lifted up the trash can. "Found you!" The delighted pinkette giggled. Jellyfish crawled out from underneath, gesturing at her wrist. "Your turn to count!" Miiko ran off while Jellyfish counted, biting down on her lip to keep from giggling.

Miiko hid inside of one of the slides, making herself a small bundle while she believed Jellyfish to be counting. Five minutes passed, then ten. Miiko was beginning to grow worried. "Jelly?" Miiko poked her head around to find Jellyfish asleep, laying curled up where she had once been standing. "Jelly! You were supposed to be counting!" Jelly looked up as though startled. She pointed to Miiko, seeming surprised. "You didn't find me, I came out!" Miiko crossed her arms and huffed. "Alright, let's do something else since if you stand still for too long you'll fall asleep." Miiko took Jellyfish's hand, the two of them setting off for adventure. There weren't that many people lurking on top, mostly a scout and the window where the Captain of the ship looked out.

They spent the day exploring and when they were all called for dinner, Miiko sat beside Rose in the bustling dining room. It was family style, meaning they brought food to your table. "Who are the workers? Why are they children?" Was it because they were too young to fight? Regardless, they all seemed happy to do their jobs, chatting with pirates and filling cups, giggling and squealing. "It looks like they're happy, I can't believe all of these people were abandoned." That meant that some of them were murderers or thieves. If one was expelled from their island, then it meant that they committed an unforgivable offense against those that were residing in peace. Corrupt leaders were not safe from the grasp of the red boats either.

"It's so warm," Miiko shed her coat, tying it around her waist. She had been too excited to sleep and was now standing at attention at the window with Rose, Havran, Varus, and the team. "Don't worry Stella, we're coming for you." Miiko grasped Rose's hand, walking alongside her to the elevator that would take them to the hull and then into the desert.

"Sometimes the children committed crimes and were exiled." Havran explained in a condescending voice, trying to seem superior to everyone else as she did so. "Or maybe they were framed and are innocent but no one will give them a chance." She shook her head, crossing her arms unhappily. "Some were exiled because their parents did a crime and were also exiled, and figured their children were probably the same bad seed." It sounded sad and bleak but the kids here were happy to help however the could, weren't they? "Others were born between exiles and would never be accepted on any island because of their blood." It was clear that there was a lot of hard feelings between exiles and those who weren't, those that could live happily on land, without worry of being hated just because they lived on the Red Fleet. "But they're happy now, because we all know what it's like to be thrown aside, unloved by anyone, to be garbage."

It was time to march into the sandstorm blowing with a fury. Goggles were handed out for everyone, as were scarves to protect whatever they could. "Trust me, you'll want to keep your coat on." Varus said to Miiko with a wink as the elevator took them down. Once the raiding army was on land, the boats all moved to hide somewhere close by so that they wouldn't be spotted by the enemy. "Miiko, the sand will hurt and cut your skin if you don't cover it up, so be careful." Rose advised, still feeling that chill down her spine when she recalled the words of Daisy and Callum about her secret keeping. Was it really so bad to keep it hidden? This was her chance of a fresh start, to live without being connected to her past, so why was it a bad thing to hide it? She didn't understand.

As it turned out, it truly was a treacherous journey through the sand. The storm and the wind made it near impossible to move, and then the sand wasn't like ground, it shifted, it moved, so it made it even harder every single step. Jellyfish was being carried by Varus and Fox held Havran, but there was still one little girl that might need assistance. As it was Rose and Miiko were locked hand-to-hand as they trudged forth, but how long could she last? "Wh-whenever you want, I can carry you." Rose offered, but then Gavin stepped to catch up and scooped Miiko up into his arms with ease. He was much taller than Rose, who was probably just slightly below average height.

"Th-that's my Cast..." Rose trailed off, shaking her head. No, she couldn't let herself get attached because once the time came, Stella would be back. She couldn't get used to the idea of being Miiko's only friend. Soon, she would lose her place, and her heart coiled up in agony thinking about it. Callum fell into step next to her, his distaste unmasked. "Hmpf, walk faster, Essie would be disappointed." He said as a scalding remark and Rose realized she was losing her speed. With determination she put more strength into her legs, fighting nature itself to maintain her pace.

Miiko took the offered goggles and scarf. She wrapped the scarf over her nose and mouth, mocking the fashion that Havran was doing it in and put her coat back on. "It's so windy!" Miiko yelled over the sound, the wind whipping through her skirt. It was a good thing that Miiko was wearing leggings! She trailed after Rose despite the fact that the two of them were holding hands, a bit of sand leaking in through her goggles. "It's so hard to see!" Miiko panted against her scarf, glad that she had put her coat back on. "I can walk Rose, don't worry!" Miiko was slipping and sliding while Rose seemed so steady and confident. Any outsider could tell that Miiko admired Rose, how strong and brave she was. Rose had just joined and already she was more a part of the rebellion than Miiko had ever been. It was only thanks to her black haired friend that she was allowed to participate in the rescue of Stella, despite the fact that Miiko was the rebellion Leaders's daughter.

Gavin scooped up Miiko from behind, carrying her in his arms. "I can walk!" Miiko protested, "or Rose can carry me!" Gavin frowned, which Miiko could tell based on the frown lines. "Miiko, Rose is struggling to keep up on her own, I doubt she could carry you." Miiko scowled, "then slow down for her!" They were making next to no headway in this storm anyhow. The team was slow, what was worse was the fact that sand was filling every crevice of their clothing, weighing them down. There was no stopping for water because if they so much as pulled down their scarves, their noses and mouths filled with gritty, dirty tasting sand. "I think I like snow more!" Miiko called, unsure how they were going to escape the jail in these conditions.

"Patrol car!" They all dropped to the ground, hiding within the dirt. Miiko stayed silent, holding still until the vehicle passed, spitting sand in their direction. There was no sense in shaking themselves off when they rose to their feet, unable to do much but continue in their trek. "Are we almost there?" Miiko asked, tired. She was walking, too heavy to carry with that much sand in her boots and pockets. Miiko had figured out that if she tied her suspenders around the scarf, it made it easier to keep the scarf over her nose and mouth. "There it is," Varus pointed to the building looming over them. Miiko gasped, wondering how the heck they were going to get in and out of such a large, robust structure. "Where does it begin and end?" Where was Stella contained?

They took shelter in an empty vehicle garage, shaking the sand off. Miiko was relieved that she could now breathe without the taste of sand infiltrating her lungs. She turned out her boots and socks, stuffing them into the bag Gavin carried. "Good idea," Gavin nodded in approval, following suit. "It feels so good," Miiko wiggled her toes. The garage door was closed, sheltering a few of them. The other door would allow them into the building, but they needed a password. What they were looking for now was the number sequence and any ID card that would allow them in through that door.

It was hell, going through the sand, it was even worse than Aurum's snow, because when they were scaling the mountain, the blizzard wasn't there, it was just cold and slippery. Here though, the sand, the wind, everything was fighting against them. "It'll be easier the other way around." Callum said, he was walking with practiced ease as if this had no effect on him. "Not much easier, but at least the wind and the storm will be on our side then." That's right, that made sense. "I can carry..." Then she stumbled and Callum reluctantly caught her with a grunt. "It's fine, I've got her." Gavin said and he too was walking steadily. And so they kept going, mindlessly through the sandstorm, as thirst, exhaustion, and pain whittled them down, but finally they made it out of the storm, at some civilized part.

"Here we are!" Havran was set down by Fox who unlike most of them, hardly seemed to be breaking a sweat at all. "The Sand Prison! Stella and the other hostages are here." Havran really was kind of a pain - she was loud, she had a superiority complex, but deep down, according to her Spirit, apparently she was just shy and didn't know how to talk to others around her age. They went to the garage and got prepared for the raid. "What's the plan?" Rose had been anxious - so bad that she wanted to vomit - but now she was calm and secure, because the battle was about to begin. The building was tall, towering high up in the air, it was near impossible to get a sense of scale. Daisy whistled quietly. "You could almost mistake the Prison for the Monument..." But far in the distance, you could see the towering Imperial Statue, looking down on everyone, even more majestic and giant than the Sand Prison.

Varus gathered everyone then with a grin. "I've got people on the inside willing to help, they'll tell us where we need to go." There was about a hundred people gathered here over all and Varus started separating and organizing them into groups. Annie and Varus would be on their own, Daisy, Jelly, Gavin, Callum were put together, and to Havran's protesting, she and Fox were paired with Miiko and Rose. "I'm your second in command, I don't want to babysit!" The child snapped, but Anny poked her in the head with her musket. "That's why you're on the important mission of saving Stella." She said, shutting Havran up. Fox smiled pleasantly at Miiko and Rose. "Well, it's good to be working with you."

Once the gates were opened by the insiders, everyone scattered in different directions according to their objective. "Stella's deep underground, according to the inside source." Havran seemed to put aside her grievances and was all business. "We gotta find the special elevator and get down first!" With fifty different pairs running around, causing chaos, the guards inside the Sand Prison were definitely in disarray. "We have two hours - once that time is up we gotta group up with everyone outside or be left behind!" If they stayed too long, L's main army would come and they would kill them all, this had to be a quick in-and-out situation. "Let's go, Stella's waiting for us." Rose said, slashing her way through a guard to find a map on the wall, detailing where the elevator is. "This way." Fox pointed, letting Havran lead so he could guard the rear.

"The plan is to search for Stella," anyone could have told them that, but Miiko was making a lame attempt at a joke. She wiggled her bare toes, feeling scratchy sand between them, then shook out her scarf and used it to wrap her hair in it. "It'll benefit us in the long run if they can't identify us," Miiko said, summoning up her magic wand. The weapon was unique to Miiko, made with tender love and care by Nino. Of course Miiko didn't know that Nino was once one of L's most trusted advisers, she did, however, know that Nino betrayed the Republic by joining the Rebellion and was assisting on the inside until they grew suspicious and it was no longer safe for her to stay there. Nino was also the main designer on this building, meaning that the layout would be confusing to anyone who had never seen a map or schematic. Security would be immaculate, Miiko had no doubt in her mind that they would still be using Nino's plans.

Nino was a genius, Miiko felt a stab in her stomach thinking about how Nino had come all alone, how she had nearly been killed when she showed up in Jasper in her ruined Republic uniform, in terrible distress. Miiko could remember the day that she met Nino very clearly, it was before Stella was taken from their home. An exchange, someone had once said. In exchange for Nino, they had taken Stella. Now they were here to take Stella back. "Wait, why am I paired with her!" Miiko had the same sentiment as Havran, she didn't want to be paired up with the brat that had a superiority complex. Miiko placed her hands on her hips, "fine, but I'm in charge!" She hooked a thumb in the direction to herself. Not wearing shoes would make it too easy to identify her, which was why Miiko put her socks back on, leaving her shoes in Gavin's bag.

"Special elevator?" Miiko swallowed, she hated elevators. Her first time inside of one had been scary, hearing that Stella had to take one everyday was horrifying. "Rose, what if Stella is angry?" Miiko asked worriedly, "I stood by while she got cut down, I wasn't able to help her. What if she doesn't want to see me?" In some sense, every child felt a certain blame for everything that happened within their family. Athena's illness, Jace and Varus's falling out. Some days Miiko found herself thinking that what if it was she and not Stella that had been taken? Would her family simply chalk it up as a loss and move on? Would they save Miiko from the tines of the Republic? Would they believe her to be dead like they had Stella for so long?

"I found one!" Miiko pointed to two metal doors tucked into the corner. They were elevators, but did they go down to the floor that they would need? "How does your source know where they are?" If they did, why hadn't they broken Stella out sooner? Miiko's stomach danced at the thought of seeing her sister again. "Rose, I can't wait for you to meet her." Miiko smiled, "I think you and Stella will get along really well," Miiko clapped her hands together. "I've decided that when we get back, we should have a welcome party. For you it'll be a welcome to Yavin, since we never had one, and for Stella it'll be a welcome back party because she's coming home." Would Rose help Miiko plan it?

Was the Red Fleet's inglorious captain actually completely insane? Or did he have a method to his madness? Both Havran and Miiko were against the idea of being paired with each other, Fox seemed pretty much uncaring as to what the party make up was and Rose couldn't help but wonder what exactly Varus was planning. "Yeah, I want to be with you, Captain!" Havran insisted but then he patted both Miiko's and Havran's heads. "Isn't it so epic, the little sister bursting in to rescue her big sister who has been waiting for all these five years?!" There was an insane light in his eyes that Rose couldn't understand. "It's a true moment of destiny, for the history books, people will sing of this battle in the years to come!" Rose stared and even after they all split up, headed to the elevator to go to the lower floors, Rose found Captain Varus to be utterly incomprehensible.

As Miiko and Havran bickered about who was in charge, Fox gave Rose a peculiar smile, he too, was one of those unreadable types, he always sported a vague smile, so it was impossible to tell what he was really thinking on the inside. "Little children shouldn't have to fight in war." He said quietly, referring to the two girls ahead of them. "It should be adults who fight, keeping them safe to be children." Rose wasn't an adult, but it made sense why she wasn't grouped as one of the children. "I don't think things like the sanctity of childhood exists anymore in this world." Children could be used as tools in war, they could be made to do awful things and have awful things done to them. "But couldn't you say the same about ours? We pretended to protect children, but people still hurt and killed them every day." Fox nodded, that same smile etched on his face, but his eyes were grave.

At Miiko's guidance, they eventually found the elevator after a little bit of fighting. Not much, thankfully, both Fox and Rose didn't want their little ones to have to - wait, why was she thinking all like an adult, like a mother? Yes, Miiko was essentially a midget, but they were still technically the same age! "Because they work here." Havran said snootily. "The Captain made sure that they were on our side, so we know the information is true!" Fox didn't quite look like a father either despite being clearly an adult. "Is this the right floor?" Fox nodded. "She's somewhere on this floor." This was where the highest security was, with only a few prisoners but behind the tightest locks. Havran had a strange tool in hand. "A bypass shunt, it can open any lock!"

"I-I'm excited too." Rose said distractedly as she cut through another Republic warden. Was she really excited though? Wasn't it more like dread? "No, she won't be angry. No sister would hold a grudge for something like that." No, what Miiko did, what happened to Stella wasn't her fault. "It's not like you ratted her out to the Republic or anything." Havran snorted as she shot another enemy, leading the charge, not letting Miiko take the front line. "Yeah, only disgusting people would snitch!" She said with a grin, each word stabbing Rose's heart. "I want to kill anyone that could snitch out family!"

Miiko played with a loose thread on her skirt, feeling anxious. "I hate elevators," she muttered while Fox slid the access card through the reader. The doors opened and Miiko pressed the last button on the lowest floor. She felt her breath hitch in her throat, it was strange to think that she was inside of a jail when most other islands out ruled jails and instead used red boats. Capitol City was different, why did they keep its most dangerous criminals on its shores instead of expelling them from the land where they could never hurt anyone again? "I don't understand the Republic," Miiko scratched at the scarf she had wrapped around her head. She didn't understand why Havran didn't bother covering herself, perhaps because she was part of the Red Fleet? Once Havran left it would be hard to find her if she was a pirate.

Of course Miiko was different, she lived on Yavin where the general location was almost known by the Capitol, however they were never able to pin point where exactly it was located thanks to the scramblers that Nino had built to keep them hidden. They were an island in the middle of nowhere and that was how it was meant to be. "How do we know which one Stella is kept in?" The elevator doors had opened, Miiko looked around, glancing at the names on the doors. They weren't written in any language that Stella could read. "This isn't the Universal Language," she frowned. It was some sort of strange pattern of numbers that spelled words, meant to confuse people who didn't work for the jail. "Can anyone else read this?" Miiko scratched at her head, maybe she was just stupid? Of course their new language didn't account for the fact that numbers could look like letters, it was a very clever system indeed.

"You really don't think she'll be mad? That's a relief," Miiko was worried that Stella would carry anger at Miiko for not being able to save her. Miiko carried at anger at herself. This entire time she had been harboring feelings of intense abhorrence at her uselessness, how she had been unable to do anything but scream and cry while Stella was shot and taken away by the monster called Lise. "I'm sure Stella will be happy that I've had you looking out for me while she was gone," Miiko tittered, excitedly rocking back and forth while she glanced in through every window in search of Stella. "We've checked every room haven't we? Stella isn't in any of them." Were they on the wrong floor? On the wrong side of the jail? Had they moved Stella in anticipation for an attack? How would they have known that they were coming? Unless the traitor had leaked the information to them?

Miiko placed her hand against the wall, thinking to herself. "Where could they have put her?" She leaned against a pillar, feeling tired from the trek and now this adventure. "I would never snitch! What are you trying to say?" Miiko growled at Havran, ready to fight her if needed.

There was a very good reason why the Republic didn't have the option of exiling it's hated people. And the very group attacking the impenetrable Sand Prison was exactly why. If they exiled all their enemies, said enemies would end up creating or joining a rebel force, making them even stronger. It was necessary to build the prison to limit the chance of that happened as much as possible. An exiled enemy could always come back to bite you, but a dead enemy was an enemy that could never hurt you again. "I'm here, you'll be okay." Rose said quietly. At first glance you would assume that the rattling and clanking of the elevator frightened her, but no, it was the fact that she didn't want Stella back that made her afraid. She didn't want to lose her place of belonging. But she had no way of telling this to Miiko, who dearly wanted her sister back, and so Rose hid her heart, but a part of it screamed, wanting Miiko to notice, to understand.

"You're a moron! Every strategist knows that you gotta understand your enemy if you wanna beat'em!" Havran said with a smarmy giggle before Fox pinched her nose, giving some payback for all the pinches he had to endure. "You still have a long way to understand the Republic, missy." Fox said as he burned his way past the security checkpoint, turning it into ash and molten metal. "We don't need to read it." Rose said with a tiny smile, knowing what Havran and Fox were plotting. "We're going to unlock all the doors with the bypass shunt, with that it doesn't matter which door Stella's behind." Havran grinned with self satisfaction as they went to the first cell door, placing her device on the lock, the beeping signifying that it was now hard at work. "This floor is where they keep the light bearers!" The raven haired girl said as if it was obvious. "So if we let them out and break the inhibitors, we get more fighters on our team!"

With a pleasant beep, the shunt undid the first lock. It was a complicated little machine with a self-learning AI that grew smarter every time it undid a lock, memorizing each pattern in order to crack it. Not even retina scans could stop it, since it could replicate any key required. The door swung open and Rose stabbed the inhibitor on the prisoner's wrist to break it. "You guys go to the next one, take the shunt." Havran tossed it to Rose to catch. "We gotta identify who he is." Rose figured she could memorize it - "Hey, you there ,stop!" A line of heavily armored soldiers arrived. Rose glanced at Fox, who smiled. "Miiko, Havran, take the prisoner and find cover, Rose and i can handle this."

The inferno blazed and Rose dove in, eyes going wide, pupils thinning like that of a cat. With rapid, lithe movement she predicted her enemy's attacks and hit them where they weren't guarding, cutting and stabbing her way through the little chinks in the armor. But then they heard a sound, a mechanical whirring noise. "They've got turrets." Fox said, trying to look through the smoke to identify where it was shooting from. An electronic roar came and then an explosion, Havran seemed to have found and shot it. Fox was good at this teamwork thing, he could use fire to modify the playing field, making sure Rose would never be overwhelmed in the use of her ability, since it only worked on one enemy at a time. By ensuring she remained in one-on-one situations, he made sure she never took a single lick of damage.

A half hour passed, they still needed to get to the rest of the cells and release them in order to get Stella and then escape to the front entrance within the two hour time limit. If you weren't there by the end, you would be left behind.
