Heinrich Howe's mother could not afford to raise him after his father died of sickness, so she gave him over to apprentice the master blacksmith, Hans Zavin. Heinrich followed his master and did as he was asked. The hard labor of learning the blacksmith trade did him well, he was strong for a young boy, from hours of working. The German smithy did well and once Heinrich was in his teen years he started to romance a young woman in the local village, finding his first love.
Someone else already had their sights set on her, a young man from Frankfurt named Artan. He burnt the smithy down, crushing Hans's business, sending Heinrich the message to back off. Heinrich could not control his anger at what the fool had done over their dispute, his vision red with blood. He grabbed a hammer from the smithy from the fire, scarring his hand permanently, and marched to Artan's house. When the boy opened the door he split his skull open. There was no turning back from what he had done, so he enrolled as a sailor under a false name and got out of Germany.
He had to leave the woman behind. After he saw the blood spurt out of Artan's head from the chasm he created in the man's brow, he realized his love for the girl was simple infatuation. It still made him laugh to this day. Heinrich made his way from port to port, finding work and living a traveler's life. He came to England multiple times, finding it the most tolerable location. An old man owned a saloon and could hardly keep up with the work, so Heinrich decided to leave his naval life and settle at the saloon, tending the bar and keeping ruffians out.
