Jae-Jin Song

I say: if the heart is a muscle I will train it to be sinew. / I say: the heart is a muscle and it will resist. / I say: because I am master of myself, I will not be weak.

of luxury and relaxation and is the only way to calm him down
+ succulents | he manages to kill everything else

    Dislikes
sleep | it's basically wasting time being unconscious +
formal clothes | he'll always find some way to mess up the
way he looks because it reminds him too much of the rigidity
in his household growing up + crowds | too noisy and
breathless can he go work in silence now please + smoke | that
usually means his father is upset which is bad news + alcohol |
please don't he needs absolute control over himself

    Strengths & Weaknesses
astrology | he likes to read star charts and map people's charts
in his down time + persistent | never leaves any work
unfinished + kind | very awkwardly but he does his best to be
kind to every living thing + humble | a very strange trait for a

+ frugal | never catch him spending more than he absolutely has to

precise | he keeps track of time almost religiously + gullible |
believes most things he's told + lack of humour | doesn't laugh at
obvious jokes but finds the randomest events to laugh at + meek |
raise your voice enough and he'll agree to anything you ask +
tactless | seriously he does not know what subtlety means

    Miscellaneous
always keeps change in his pockets and forgets all about it |
double-jointed | well we can't all be perfect | some things
are more important than sleep | rude honestly | all his music |
seriously does he never sleep | needs some stress relief probably
    | hufflepuff because all his ambition is geared toward crying and
eating ice cream | feel free to call him any variation of Song Jae-Jin
just don't call him Reed he will murder you while sobbing | he has
the most uncanny memory and will randomly go "remember when"
and recall an event that happened ages ago | walks really quietly
he's very good at scaring people without meaning to | sweetheart
needs a break | oh my god

    hark, the herald, blackbirds sing

what is bigger than the universe,
    greater than a king,
that you can never take back?
    a kiss.

    you always wanted to
    conquer.
a person; your fears; the sky
you always wondered if you could drink it all,
if you would burst with the weight of
all the world's hopes pinned on the
    sun sank deep –

    IT HURTS TO UNRAVEL

A family, displaced. A boy, new come.

They never really had much money, not after the move to this new and faraway country. A family rich in heritage and knowledge, that much is true - but an ancient family history does not fill one's stomach.

One might be right, upon first setting eye on the Songs, to say that they were a proud family. They wore their history like a badge of honour, and glided everywhere silently, with little acknowledgement of others apart from the occasional toss of the head or a tilt of their face away from whichever mediocre person had happened to cross their path. Jae-Jin's own mother was capable of walking so regally that, on the occasions she wore a skirt that shielded her feet from view - that is to say, almost all the time, because it was an effect she had perfected herself and she secretly enjoyed putting it on display - she looked as though she was a doll, slipping noiselessly across the cobblestones as if guided by a well-oiled clockwork.

So it's no real surprise that the way Jae-Jin was raised was far from healthy - raised mainly by his mother and her mother, his father often away at work, from the start he was made very aware of what had been given up for him. All this so he could go to a prestigious school, so he could begin music lessons, so he could have clothes tailored to fit him. He knew the meaning of opportunity cost even before he could pronounce the word. The Songs could give up their little luxuries to build Jae-Jin's future, but they would not give up their pride and they'd be damned if they let their child out in public looking any less than his best.

They had their resentment, though. Some nights the house would fill with the smell of smoke, and there would be a dangerous glitter in his father's eye, and the slightest creak of the floor under Jae-Jin's feet or a door closed too loudly would have his father upon him before he could even gasp an apology. "Don't you see, I'm doing this for you because I want you to be good," his father would say, over and over, almost begging for forgiveness from his son even as he beat him black and blue.

But Jae-Jin was fine. Mostly. He grew into a refined young man, always polite, his features soft but handsome, always called by the English name bestowed upon him when he came to this land - Reed Song. But things never last forever, and Jae-Jin earned his freedom in the form of university, where he would meet the piano teacher that he loved like he'd never loved any of his family before. Alton Grant, a man who spoke loudly and was quick to flare, but was gentle and expressive when he was sitting at the piano. Later he'd lie pressed against Jae-Jin's side, but the few months before they were anything beyond teacher and student was the closest to bliss Jae-Jin ever knew.

Their relationship was brief and hesitant, neither ever really knowing what to do with each other beyond sit quietly, pressed shoulder to shoulder and thigh to thigh. Jae-Jin always figured he'd be happy like that too, he could settle, up until the day he arrived for their weekly class to an empty studio and a note for him: sorry. I can't. Whether consumed by guilt or a desire for something more Jae-Jin never knew, because Alton never showed up again. Jae-Jin still carries a photo of him in his wallet, worn at the edges and stained with water marks. Just for the memory.

But here he is now, almost at the end of his journey. He's ready to move on, to see what the future holds.
