War is multidimensional,
it effects more than just those in the immediate area, but overtakes all.
The land becomes ravaged by tents pitched and boots marched.
The people are famished by poverty, as soldiers quarter in their homes and eat their wares.
War spans generations, it can inflict wounds that live on for decades.
There is nothing romantic about bloodshed and death.
But there is romance in what comes next.
Families reunited, burying the dead, poems sprout from heroes, and lives that were spared.
And when the flowers blossom where they were once dead, love can begin to grow again.

It was not supposed to be this way, but it never is. War is unpredictable, it is not only a test of strength, but a test of will. In this case, the offendors will was stronger. Messiah sat upon a cracked throne, wearing an ill fitting crown. His faceless face smiled as he greeted in a new era, his pets at his feet, one a witch, the others all demons. In his decree, he ordered that the remainder of the demons repent for their crimes, or be executed at sunrise. Most chose to repent, swearing fealty at his feet. Most of them were cowards. There were only three that were executed, nameless, faceless, they hung outside of the Cascade as a warning for all others to see.

They marched the next spring upon the Tower Society, with their ranks at full strength and their demons at their highest power. Messiah wielded a terrifying force upon the remainder of the humans. He was mighty, they stood no chance and crumbled beneath his fist. The battle took place nearly two hundred years ago and the face of the earth began to change. The surviving humans were used for various means, not food of course, nothing so barbaric. They became slaves and toys, pets used for pleasure or games. They were forced to work in factories, bearing numbers on their lapels and barcodes on their wrists. Few remained in power, but even then, it was conditional underneath the will of Messiah.

They wanted the war, oh how the demons thirsted for it. They said it would unify the countries at last, to rid the earth of the plague called humanity and replace it with something more sustainable. They delivered on their word, the plants began to flourish, entire cities were leveled when there was no one to live in them. Forests sprang left and right, there was food for all, with no human left to go hungry and no demon unable to feed their hoard. The only spats were ones of territory, demons ever-so possessive over what they believed was rightfully their's. There were systems put in place for these things of course, the high court to rule on anything that could not be settled with fists. Realizing it was futile to fight it, the angels began to migrate to earth. Only a very few decided to remain, as Heaven had much more to offer than a land ravaged by demons and their human slaves.

Mercy was not a word in the demon vocabulary. Humans were not to stray far from their owners and owners were to keep track of their flock, least they want their belongings to be taken by another demon.

On the surface, there seemed to be a sense of relative peace. Of course, internally, there was a horrible disquiet. The humans were oppressed and could not resist. They were outnumbered and out-manned, with nothing left for them to do but submit. If their demon task-masters were kind enough, they lived in nicely appointed corridors. Some had homes with families, while others lived in slums built atop one another. There was always an exception, of course, for the humans who had managed to live off of the grid. They had escaped during the first wave of oppression and fled to the woods. They lived in caves with no electricity or running water. Still, some fled to the human paradise called Japan, the only stronghold the demons had never managed to infiltrate.

Ruling with a demon fist, the future of earth seemed imminent, unless, of course, something came to disrupt them.

Horrible pain exploded in her chest. Baronling Feodth flinched as he watched as Ophie collapsed. Polaire slashed with her sword but she also fell over, Baroness Rafflesia wiping her hands with a cloth as if they were dirty. Ophelia could feel a faint feeling in her head as her tails were squezed painfully. "Why... are you doing all this for me?" Baronling Feodth asked, an oddly vulnerable expression on his face as he watched his sponsor tear off Ophie's tails, drawing a scream from the angel. "You're weak, you can't win without my help." Rafflesia answered with a vicious smile. "Someone like you needs me to help you win." Using dirty tricks and cheap tactics, they wanted him to become a Baron. Feodth looked down, grimacing at the bloodshed. Despite his large muscular build, he was terribly weak. "If I become known as a Baron who helped train the winner of the competition, can you imagine how famous I would become?" Rafflesia's smile was wide and dangerous.

Ophelia's head was spinning when she woke up. She didn't even know what was going on. Polaire was groaning in a bed near hers, shaking her head. She was hurt, but Ophelia felt like she had had it worse. There was someone looking at her curiously from the side. Baron Eudaikos had come, the Baron of Justice. His crystal sword was laying harmlessly on the ground. "You're awake." He said, looking closely at her. She could barely make him out her vision was so spotty. "You almost didn't make it." Baron Eudaikos explained, shaking his head. "You're lucky your brother's so dutiful. Brothers should always take care of their sisters." He put a hand delicately on Polaire's sleeping face, brushing against her cheek.

Laertes? Was he why she was saved? "Wh-where..." He shook his head again, his eyes hard and stern. "Don't talk, it's okay. Just rest, it's been a week. You don't have much time left until the next selection." But maybe if they could disqualify Feodth due to Rafflesia's cheating, they could get a pass for this month. Wasn't that their only chance right now? Not only Sonata, but Polaire and Ophelia now both were sitting at a grand total of zero points for this month now. "Laertes went back to his post in Paris once he was sure you'd be fine." But what was Eudaikos doing here? Did he come hearing that his sister was hurt?

The door opened and Doctor Julian entered, carrying some trays of liquids and vials. "Oh, you're awake." His expression was gentle. "Eudaikos, could you let Cal know? He and Pierce were worried." Ophelia's white hair fanned out as she lowered her head, feeling dizzy and sick again. Eudaikos nodded, heading out the door while Julian looked over her. "Looks like you can see, you're responsive. You're going to be okay." He smiled, patting her on the head. "Take better care of yourself. You have people who want you safe and alive." She had been so stupid going after Feodth alone like this. It wasn't like her to lose control of herself like this. Did she really are about avenging Sonata that much?

The day after Ophie's incident, Alice was playing in her room when she was called downstairs. There were two guards waiting inside, both carrying the sigil of the Baron King. "Alice, put your shoes on." Baron Pierce seemed uneasy, but Alice didn't know why. "Are we going on a trip?" She asked, taking Dog and Pog with her. "No, we're merely going to Paris." Baron Pierce replied as they got into the carriage. Alice didn't understand what was happening of course, but she was glad that it was just her and Baron Pierce and no one else. She sat on his lap in the carriage, wondering why he was so quiet. "Is something wrong?" Alice asked, turning around to look at him.

"Nothing," he smiled patiently. They reached Paris quickly, Baron Pierce holding her hand as they were escorted inside by two guards. Baron King Messiah was waiting for them. "Baron Pierce," his faceless face almost had a smug smile on it as they approached. "Baron King Messiah," he bowed and Alice copied him, bowing as well. "You summoned me and requested I bring my pet, why?" He wanted to get straight to the bottom of it of course, already his nerves were being frayed. Baron King Messiah rose, circling them, he was relishing this, even Alice could tell that much. "I'm sure you can sense it," he said quietly, taking a seat on his throne once more. "That the pet you've taken in is not human and therefore does not meet the guidelines for legal pet status."

"What do you mean?" Baron Pierce asked cautiously, "I've sensed nothing but humanity on this child." His tone was measured, he would say nothing and give nothing away. "I'm a human," Alice added helpfully. "I'm afraid, dear child, you are not." Baron King Messiah shook his head, Doll entering. She grabbed Alice, pulling her away from Baron Pierce. "What's happening?" Alice asked, panicked. She dropped Pog, squirming, as Doll began to pull her out of the room. "No, I don't want to go!" She screamed, stomping on Doll's foot, but the demon barely flinched. "Messiah stop, she's a child!" Baron Pierce reached out, his hair fanning out around him. "You and I both know that isn't true Pierce. You've taken a faerie into custody, by accordance of the truce agreement with the magical folk, what you've done has broken the law. I have thr giths to punish you if I wish."

"You have no evidence of your claims and I will not let you take her without as much!"

Baron Pierce picked up Pog, doing his best to not lose his cool. "I don't want to go!" Alice stiffened, her eyes lighting up, her body going limp. They all froze, watching her, as though they could see it too. Baron Pierce ran to her aid, lowering Alice to the ground. "Do you still wish to maintain that human status?" Baron King Messiah inquired, his tone more amused than anything else. "What did you intend to do with an oracle Pierce?" Messiah rose from his throne. "I intended to raise her, my King."

"And do what? Predict the rain? Good soil? What does the Baron of the Gardens need an Oracle for, exactly?" His hand grasped Pierce's shoulder. "I know everything, Pierce." He whispered, "the angel, Nova, I know all of it. Do you know why I chose to continue to let you live instead of killing you right now?"

"Why, My King?"

"Because you amuse me." Messiah rose, "and you have an important job. Not many can produce such high quality products."

"What are you going to do with her?" Pierce asked, holding Alice's limp hand. "I'm going to study her, then I will return her to where she belongs."

❝This world's unfamiliar, nothing is as it seems.❞

|| Countdown to X Day|| Sound Horizon ||

The Angel Knight Laertes listened to the commotion from behind the wall. He had a feeling that if he was going to act, it would be now. All races, vampires, angels, mages alike agreed that they had to keep the Oracle out of Baron Messiah's hands. Laertes was a little sweet on Alice, her big naive eyes, her bright hair, her cheerful complexion. He had hoped that someone like Baron Pierce would be able to keep her safe but it seemed it was now time for him to act. The scar on his face glowed as he knocked out the other guards around him. A voice echoed in his head, beckoning to him. "We're ready. Is the coast clear?" The Light Bearers were here, and they had a stake in this mess.

With a crack, almost like a snap of the fingers, a blonde haired boy appeared, with several allies behind him. There was a girl with grey hair and dark red eyes, another girl with eyes that glimmered violet, even a boy with salt and pepper hair with two tails of pure blood extending from his rear. "Thanks for the help, we can handle things from here." Aria Matsuri twisted her hand, a gust of wind blowing down the door revealing Doll, Messiah, Pierce, and Alice within. Laertes was quick to make himself hidden, as the Light Bearers made themselves known. "We have news from Japan." Ronan Hemond growled, shaking his head like a bull dog ready to do battle. "So why don't you just stand still so I can break you?" Japan had always been the biggest thorn in Messiah's side, the light bearers and their Star given powers were something he had no plan for yet.

Xavier quickly vanished, letting the other three take care of things. Guards rushed forward, trying to fight the Light Bearers but a flash of lightning sent them all to their knees. Mizuki knelt down and took hold of the unconscious Alice, something almost tender in her eyes. "Gosh, it's always something like this. Look, Ronan, she looks kinda like Loretta!" Mizuki giggled as she played with Alice's hair. "Stop messing around, Mizu!" Wind slashed at the air, forcing Messiah back as he tried to approach. "You can't underestimate the enemy!" Thanks to Laertes and Damian communicating, they knew Baron Messiah's power. If he touched them, it would all be over.

"Of course you Japanese came here. Who invited you into my domain?" Messiah shot Pierce with an expressionless gaze before turning his attention to the Light Bearers. How dare humanity fight back? This was the age for the demons to finally rule and stand above all else. Doll and Ronan were in heavy combat, her sword like a river of death against Ronan's tails, brutally attacking with the ferocity of a wild beast clear in his eyes. Suddenly Xavier appeared next to them, a sleeping witch in his arms. "I got her! Let's back off for now!" He barked, the leader of this expedition. Suddenly Mizuki put Alice down, a troubled look on her face. "What's wrong, Mizu?" Aria asked, glancing at her sister. "We're supposed to take her with us."

"No." Mizuki said with a crafty smile. "If we take her, something terrible's going to happen." She no doubt saw that if they took Alice to Japan with them it would cause all out war to start all over again between Baron King Messiah and Japan, humanity's last refuge. "We have to leave her here for now." Aria sighed, knowing to trust her sister on this for now. "Well, Messiah, just know this, okay?" It was like a hurricane was blowing in her eyes. "Give up on your hopes with that Oracle, or next time we won't just make a friendly visit." Xavier took them all into his hands and they vanished, returning back home across the seas.

Messiah watched as the Japanese fled, he had lost Zinnia once again, but had gained something else, something much more valuable. "Leave," he said to Pierce, who nodded and fled, not wishing to die today. He had to live if he wanted to protect Alice. The child lay on the floor, eyes no longer aglow since Mizuki had touched her, now merely asleep. "What are you going to do with her?" Doll asked, craddling Alice's head in her lap. There was a laps of silence between them, then, "I think a political marriage might be arranged." Aligning himself with the fey would be the best course of action. Messiah knelt down, touching Alice's forehead, her eyes opened suddenly, her back arching in pain as wings sprouted from her skin. Large and beautiful, slightly holographic, faerie wings. She vomited from the pain, breathing hard. Dog, where was Dog? Alice found him on the floor and grabbed him, her entire body shaking.

"Wh-where is Baron Pierce?" She looked around, eyes wide and fearful. "He left," Doll said softly, wiping Alice's mouth with a handkerchief. "Why did he leave me?" She asked, her voice a whisper. Had she done something wrong? Was she bad? "You're a very important person Alice," Baron King Messiah spoke, his voice gravely. "Baron Pierce was merely babysitting you. Now, you'll finally be able to thrive." Thrive? What did that mean? Her head throbbed. Baron Messiah pat her head, but Alice didn't understand. "You're not going to put your crest on her, are you?" Doll asked, sounding slightly fearful. "No, I won't. There is no reason for me to," it wasn't as though Alice had powers she could use against him. The most she could do was predict the future. This wasn't the future she saw, this wasn't what was supposed to happen.

"I want to go home, to Baron Pierce!" Alice stood, "You cannot. Doll, take her to a room." Doll nodded, lifting Alice easily, despite the new weight on her back. "No!" Alice screamed, kicking and flailing. "I want to go home! I don't want to stay here!" Doll carried her out of the throne room and to a new room, the only furniture there a singular chair. She placed Alice down, tying down her wrists and ankles. "No!" Alice screamed as Doll walked out, unable to meet her eyes. She was afraid, she wanted Ophie or Cal or Sonata. Why did Baron Pierce leave her here? Messiah entered, wearing gloves and a mask. Alice froze in her chair, her heart pumping quickly. "What are you doing?" She was tired and hungry and the chair was so uncomfortable. "Don't move too much or it will hurt."

Hurt? What would h- pain filled her body as a knife decimated her nice dress. Alice screamed, but no one came to help, no one made it stop. He reached a hand inside of her, the flesh of her belly sliced open. "Odd," he whispered, his faceless face making her squirm. With a wave of a hand the pain stopped, her stomach closed up. He left abruptly and Alice was alone, writhing from the memory of it. It went this way for several days, Baron King Messiah would enter, Alice would scream at him to let her go home, and he would cut her. She didn't know why or what he was searching for, her would stick things inside of her, look at her organs and measure her blood. Then when it was over, he would close her back up again.

On the fifth day of this, Alice stopped fighting, she knew it was hopeless. She was tired and hungry, getting little sleep and nothing to eat, only allowed water. Today, when the door opened, it was Baron Pierce who entered. Her eyes flickered with recognition, but she was far too tired to react. "You came," she choked out, her throat dry. "Yes, I'm here. We're going home now," he untied her wrists and ankles and lifted her, picking up Dog from the floor. He wasn't sure why Messiah had the change of heart, but when he called Baron Pierce this morning to take Alice home, he did not question it. She lay her head on his lap in the carriage, reunited with Pog.

"Why did you let her go?" Queen Monaka asked, rather furious at Baron King Messiah for allowing Pierce to take her. "You summoned me here and you simply allowed that demon to take her again?" She crossed her arms, her hair fluffing up as her anger grew. "She sees that man as her father, her abilities will not grow in a place she feels confined."

"I'm going to speak with him myself."

"You can't change his mind, I know Pierce."

"Then what will I do? Allow this demon to keep my sister? Do you know how long I've been searching for her?"

"Everything will fall together soon. You just need to be patient."

|| Countdown to X Day|| Sound Horizon ||

"Why are you doing this?" Ophelia asked, looking confused at Baroness Anguis. Over the past five days since Alice had been taken it wasn't like they were sitting around doing nothing. Ayna had been watching, collecting evidence. Anguis had reached out to Baroness Vaswald and requested a special device. Vaswald accepted, sending her a camera that could project images from the mind. So once Baron Pierce went out to collect Alice from her torture Ayna was working on the camera. Ophelia and Sonata had simply been ordered to gather points for now and wait for their chance. There was no time left, it was just about time for the next elimination around. Ever since Baroness Rafflesia left, she and Feodth did not make themselves appear again in Amiens.

And now Ophie was questioning why Anguis would be helping them. Weren't Anguis and Messiah supposed to be best friends, or even more than that? "Don't question it, just be glad for the help." Calciferous had been on edge the entire time. Little Alice in Messiah's hands, it really was the worst case scenario for them. He was restless, he was powerless, they all had been. "No, I think it's important to know." Sonata locked eyes with Anguis. As Sonata healed from her time with Rafflesia's drug, she had become thinner, weaker. Some of the life went out of her. It would take time until she fully recovered, both physically and emotionally, from her addiction. "Why are you going this far for us, Anguis?" The Baroness of Agony looked almost sad as she looked at them. "Messiah's going down the wrong path." She said with a simple little smile. "He always wanted to create a world safe for demons. But he became someone that would do the same to others as what was done to him."

As far as Ophelia remembered, Anguis was a vicious torturer, always kidnapping victims to torture and hurt them in ways unimaginable. How could someone so sadistic try talking about good and bad, right and wrong? "Aren't you a torturer?" She asked, wanting to get to the bottom of this. "Not by choice." They didn't know her secret, that she was in constant agony unless she tortured someone else. It was the only relief she ever had. "I don't want Messiah to do this. While he did create order, he's still making enemies. If this goes on, he's going to die." Someone would be coming for his head. Little did they know, that someone was Ophelia herself.

"I'm going now." Ayna said, flickering out of existence. She was going now, she had a job to do. With the images traveling with her spectral form, she appeared before Monaka, the Fae Queen, as she was returning to her realm. "Hello. I have some evidence to show you." She said, revealing the evidence of Baron King Messiah's mistreatment and torture of Alice.

It was clear that Alice wasn't herself, she was withdrawn, quiet. It was as though any progress Baron Pierce had made with her over these last few months had been completely reversed by five days with Baron King Messiah. "He won't hurt you anymore, I won't let him." Baron Pierce reassured her, lifting Alice up when they reached the mansion. He carried her inside, Alice hiding her face in his chest. "It's going to be alright," he reassured her, smoothing down her messy blonde hair. He took Alice right to her room, knowing that she probably did not want to see anyone right now. "Wait," she tugged on his sleeve when he tried to leave her in bed. "Don't go." She was afraid to be alone, afraid that this was just some sort of trick. "I'm staying right here," he sat on the edge of the bed, Alice laying her head in his lap. She fell asleep quickly, feeling safe with him watching over her.

Baron Pierce remained beside her, Rene coming with lunch and leaving the tray, tip toeing out of the room. When Alice awoke, she lay quietly, hugging her plushies and staring at the wall. She was already an emotionally stunted and traumatized child, Baron Pierce was sad to see that Messiah had only made things worse. "Do you want to eat? I'm sure you're hungry." She nodded slowly, "Yes." He brought the tray closer, noticing how badly her hands are shaking. "Sit up, I'll feed you, just like old times." He smiled as Alice sat up, not releasing her toys. "Open wide," he spooned chicken noodle soup into her mouth, the two of them sitting quietly. "Do you want dessert?" She nodded, flinching when he reached over to wipe her mouth. "Two pudding cups? It looks like Rene is spoiling you."

Alice looked away, she never smiled, but now she looked more uneasy than ever. Baron Pierce eyed the wings that had sprouted from her back. It was going to be nigh impossible to hide her lineage from visitors. "Do you want to see the others?" He asked gently, prying her eyes away from the window. Alice nodded, Baron Pierce lifted her up without another word and carried her downstairs, to where the others had gathered in the parlor, their normal gathering place. "Look who's home," he smiled. He placed Alice on the couch between Ophie and Cal, Alice remaining quiet, her hands trembling as she held onto Dog and Pog. "I-I'm home." She looked at the carpet, unable to meet their eyes.

Queen Monaka was in her quarters, upset by Baron Messiah's actions. She had come today expecting to retrieve her sister, only to find that he had given her away like a prize to be won at a fair. She turned around when a specter appeared before her, a demon. "Oh?" Monaka watched, listening to what this ghost had to say. "That's enough," she had seen enough of the torment, Messiah was no better than any other demon, just as she had thought. Fine, it seemed that if she wanted to get a job done, she would do it herself. "Where is my sister now? I'm going to find her and bring her home."

"So what do you angels do up there?" Calciferous asked, curious. They were waiting for Baron Pierce to come home with Alice in tow, but for now Cal wanted to continue making conversation. Anguis had retreated back to her room to rest, she was often tired and needed to rest more than most other Barons did so she excused herself, carrying Ayna's body back with her. Now it was just the three Baronlings waiting for their master and his pet. "What do you mean?" Ophie asked, glancing at the electric demon. "Like, for entertainment. What do angels do for fun? Are there any games you play up there?" Most angels tended to find a hobby and try to be as good in that hobby as possible. Ophie wasn't like that. She had chosen to go into training rather young before she could experience a normal angel life.

"Some angels play "Guess the choice." Ophie decided to explain with a bit of thought. "They'll go to the Observatory and watch a mortal from Earth, then try to guess what the mortal will do. The winner is the one who guesses right." It was probably wrong to tell Calciferous about that though. "Did that mean you watched the war from up there?" He asked, still curious and wanting to know more. "Yes." She did watch, but it wasn't for fun. Suddenly Cal grinned, looking confident. "Then I hope you saw all the cool things I did, all of my heroic moments!" He let out a chuckle, puffing out his chest. "Nova and Doll did more heroics than you did." Ophie added, teasing him a little.

The light mood went somewhat awkward when Alice was placed down between them. "Alice." Sonata stood up, walking closer to her, only to wince and sit back down, panting. "It's okay, we can move to your sofa." Sonata's body was really good at regenerating, but something like drugs was harder for her body to cleanse itself of. So Ophelia lifted Alice up and Calciferous followed along, the three of them making their way to sit with Sonata. "Welcome back, little squirt." Cal looked as if he wasn't sure what to do with her hands, but still reached to pat her head anyways. "We took care... of Pog for you." Sonata added, looking exhausted. "Next time, we'll save you." Sonata whispered, no longer the happy go lucky demon she once was. "No matter what." Even if it meant fighting Messiah. Even if it meant dying to Messiah.

Ophie knew it wouldn't be necessary though. There was only one month left. After this month's elimination, there would be one final month which would end with them having five finalists to take on the Baron Exams. It was almost time now for the end of the story. Ophie would have Messiah's head on a stake by the time the month was over, they just needed to be patient until then. She pulled something hard out of her pocket and handed it to Alice. It was a small candy, watermelon flavored.

Ayna Anranrara knew what had to be done. Someone like Fae Queen Monaka wasn't going to just give up the search, not so easily. She needed to find Alice, and Ayna would help her. "Well, if you go to Amiens, you'll be one step closer." You had to be careful about how you worded things with the fae folk though. "Perhaps you'll find what you're looking for." Ayna's plan? She was going to let Monaka see just how happy Alice was with Pierce and the others at Amiens, she'll show that the demons there truly did have Alice's best interests at heart. And if Monaka proved to be a problem, she would be surrounded by enemies. They could kill her and end the threat if it became necessary.

Alice didn't struggle when Ophie lifted her to move closer to Sonata, in fact, she almost went limp. She held onto Dog and Pog tightly, as though she were afraid to be separated from them again. "Th-thanks," they had taken care of Pog for her while she was gone, although none of them knew if they would ever see her again. She was different now, she knew. They were all the same, but Alice was different. They were all still demons, but Alice wasn't a human anymore. She had wings on her back and her ears were pointy. Sonata seemed a little more withdrawn than normal and Cal seemed harder, somehow, but they were still the same. They still knew what they were, but Alice didn't know what she was. She hadn't had a vision since that day, perhaps the trauma had somehow made her ability go back inside of her? Alice hoped so. She hated it. She didn't want to be an oracle anymore, she just wanted to be Alice.

Sonata said that next time they would save her, even if they had to go against Baron King Messiah, but Alice didn't think that they could. She had seen what he could do, he could tear people apart and put them back together, which meant that he could tear people apart without even thinking about it. She had begged him to stop so many times, but he never did, he had merely clawed at her skin, raking his talons against her bones. He had squeezed her innards, pulled them out, and reminded Alice that she was nothing. It was just as the human traders had always taught her, Alice was the bottom of the barrel. She was nothing, not important, not special. Her hands trembled as she touched the collar around her neck, the one Baron Pierce had given her. She was a pet, nothing more.

The last person Alice expected to see came bounding down the stairs, Baroness Nova had come for a visit from her hiding hole upstairs. "It's been awfully quiet without you getting into everything," Echo stood in the doorway, her hands on her hips. She had finally finished her evolution at last and was now fully awake. "Echo, is that you?!" Cal nearly fell out of his seat. "Yes it is you pervert, my eyes are up here!" She crossed her arms across her chest. "Echo-you-you-got-" Cal stuttered dumbly. "Hot!" Sonata piped up helpfully. Alice blinked, uncertain who this person was. She hid her face in Ophie's chest, shy. Echo was several inches taller and much more vuluptuous. It seemed her body had finally matured while she had slept. While her chest wasn't overly large, it certainly was no longer flat.

"Incredible," Pierce mused, he had never seen an evolution first hand. They were hard to come by and usually only happened when a demon's abilities outgrew their physical vessel. "Alice, it's just Echo." Baron Pierce supplied helpfully, Echo crossing her arms. "Came down four floors to see her and she won't even look at me." She shook her head, tail swishing, certainly upset. Echo was lonely all the way up there on her own, now that she no longer had Blithe, but she would never admit to it of course. There was no need for her to hide anymore either, considering Baron King Messiah had pardoned her when he had taken Alice.

Alice and Dog and Pog, the trio of adorableness, was finally back together. Ophie observed them carefully, a weary look in her crimson eyes. Calciferous was trying his best to make things back to normal but Sonata was still mostly out of it. She was harder now, less open and friendly than she used to be. Ophelia wondered if she was still the same while the others were rapidly changing before her very own eyes. Even Alice had it hard after all she had suffered. There was a strange silence after Sonata made her promise but Ophie didn't want Sonata or Calciferous to attack Messiah. She just wanted those two to safely become Barons and enjoy their lives. Ophie would handle the rest on her own. She had a special weapon, one hidden carefully inside her tails.

The dark blade that the vampire Iflet Seylum used to wield was in her possession, of course. The angels retrieved it after the Third Impact ended and humanity lost against the demons. A weapon that made it so that wounds could never ever heal was something too dangerous for demons to have access to, so of course Ophelia was given the knife in order to assassinate Baron King Messiah with. Her brother had a replica made for him as well, and both siblings were aiming for the same goal. Suddenly, with her attendant Blithe no longer at her side, Baroness Nova returned to them, except in a new and far more mature body but the very same attitude Ophie remembered watching when she was young. Calciferous was stunned by her new look and for some reason that annoyed the silver angel for a reason she wasn't going to think about.

"It seems that you're done sleeping now." Ophelia commented, looking at Baroness Nova. She had completed her evolution into her new, more powerful form. Not many demons lived long enough to complete evolution. It was rare to even start evolving in the first place. "I'm sure Cal here is glad you're back." Sonata said, trying to tease, but a lot of the luster was gone from her voice. Cal blushed and looked away. Did he still love her? Ophie wasn't going to worry about the answer to that question. "I'm just glad she can start living her life again." Cal said, avoiding the question. "I - it's been a long time. And she's been hurt a lot." As much as he tried to hide it, Ophie knew Cal was still deeply wounded by his past and all those he lost. He was quite soft hearted for a demon.

Alice was hiding in Ophelia's flat chest, naturally the little fae girl would be afraid of someone she doesn't recognize. Ophie took a candy from her pocket. "Take it and give it to her." She told Baroness Nova helpfully. "Alice might trust you if you do it." Her wings had come out, she truly was a fae now. She wouldn't be able to hide as a human anymore. A spectral green form appeared by them then, blinking into existence. "Get ready." Ayna Anranrara said, looking past Nova. Did Nova still blame her for the betrayal? It was anyone's guess at this point. "Fae Queen Monaka is coming, so we have to show her that Alice is happy here so Monaka will let her stay."

Nova took the candy, walking over the soft carpet, her feet bare. "Alice, I have candy." She held it out, oddly gentle despite her demeanor. Alice turned around from her hiding spot in Ophie's chest long enough to take the candy, then went right back to hiding. "You don't look like Echo," she murumured, afraid of the stranger. "Well, it is me." She plopped down on the opposite couch where Baron Pierce was now sitting. Alice unburried her face once more and crawled onto Ophie's lap, taking Ophie's arms and wrapping them around her in a hug. She then unwrapped the candy slowly and sniffed it before popping it onto her tongue. It seemed that trust, for now at least, had been regained.

Ayna arrived with news, it seemed that she had taken the initiative with a plan of her own. Baron Pierce rose, not in alarm, but you could tell that this had certainly taken him by surprise. "Ayna, why would you do such a thing without consulting me first?" He inquired, wondering if Anguis knew that her Baronling was doing something this reckless. "Does it look as though we will be able to prove that in the state Alice is currently in?" Before he could say anything else, a knock sounded at the door. "I'll get it!" Rene chimed, rushing away. Baron Pierce rose with a sigh. Between Sonata and Alice, the air in the room was rather sad. It seemed that htey had no time to prepare, the Fearie Queen had found them already. "Right this way," Rene ushered her inside, there were two men adorned in armor following her.

"Queen Monaka," Baron Pierce bowed with a flourish, his head low to show respect. "You must be Baron Pierce," she smiled, seeming kind and benevolent; she seemed to glow. Alice tried to hide in Ophie's lap, she didn't want to see Monaka again. She liked the memory of her more than her actual sister. "I'm surprised you already know who I am," he raised his head, indicating for the others to bow. "Alice has told us much about you," a lie, but a harmless one. Demons were good liars, after all. "Go away," Alice whispered, hoping that if she closed her eyes, Monaka would disappear. "Then I'm sure you know that I am here to retrieve my sister. She does not belong in this world, I am here to take her home."

Alice stared hard at the floor, it would be hard to convince the Queen that this child was indeed happy here. "Come Alice, it's about time we return to our world. You don't want to inconvience Baron Pierce any longer, do you?" Alice shook her head. "I don't want to go," she whispered, holding her toys tighter than before. "Queen Monaka, you must be weary from travel. Might I suggest you stay the night in one of our guest rooms? I'm sure the journey back will be tasking." Baron Pierce suggested, not wanting to overstep any boundaries. She seemed to consider it. "I'm sure we might be able to convince you that Alice is perfectly happy here, if you give us a bit of your time."

As Ophelia was more or less forced to give Alice a hug, not that she minded or resisted any of it - in fact, she helped by tightening the strength of the hug just a tiny bit to help Alice feel more snug and safe in her arms - everyone began questioning the news Ayna had come and given them. She blinked, seemingly unphased by Baron Pierce's surprise. He had been taken off-guard, and the Baron of the Gardens was almost always composed and in control of himself. It was certainly an odd sight to see. "We had to do this fast." Ayna explained, since Anguis had been in on this too. "Monaka was cooperating with Baron Pierce. She might have ended up making him do something again to Alice if we let this go unchecked." Monaka was the reason why Pierce knew of her, that much was obvious. "The sooner we break their alliance, the better off we'll be."

Ophie didn't find anything wrong with that logic, but it would have been good to tell them all of this before actually doing it so that they would have had more time to prepare. "Keep us in the loop next time." Ophie told her calmly, eyeing her. She had good intentions, but the execution left a bit to be desires. "Okay, I will." Ayna said with a nod. "Sorry if-" The ghostly specter didn't have time to finish speaking as the bell rang and Fae Queen Monaka's presence was announced. With guards at her side, she entered, guided by Rene to where they were sitting in the lounge area. "I would think you'd care a little more about what she wanted." Sonata was more than a little bit hostile as she spoke. "Because you started meddling, Alice was taken by Baron King Messiah and tortured."

"Don't worry." Ophelia told Alice quietly. "You aren't inconveniencing anyone. This is your home." At least for now. Once chaos broke out with the death of Baron King Messiah it would be best to take her to Heaven, at least until the chaos quieted down and Earth was safe again. But of course, that was a story for another time. "I'll take her to the guest room." Calciferous rose from his seat helpfully. "If you'll follow me, Queen Monaka." With Sonata being not herself, it seemed Cal would have to do his best to try and keep the mood as light as possible.

Ayna flickered away, no doubt to discuss matters with her master, Baronness Anguis. Ophie sighed, looking as the moon poked out at them from the gilded window. "We should probably get some rest." She said, a little annoyed once the coast was clear. With Monaka here that would make it harder to find time to get points in. She and Sonata were still behind ever since losing all their points to Feodth. "Since we'll have to entertain that idiot tomorrow." Sonata looked at her in surprise. "Usually you don't show your emotions that easily." She said with a tiny grin. "...Monaka makes me angry." The silver angel admitted. "She acts self righteous but caused Alice to be captured by Messiah. She still hasn't apologized to the sister she pretends to love so much." Someone like Monaka has no right to determine Alice's future. If it wasn't for Fae Queen Monaka's meddling, none of this would have happened.

Knowing how whimsical and barbaric the fae can be, she probably wouldn't even care even if she understood that it was all her fault.

As Calciferous led Queen Monaka to the guest room, Alice tried to hide in Ophie's arms. She felt Ophie's grip tighten around her, as though to reassure her that she wasn't going anywhere. Baron Pierce rose, "I'll take Alice to bed. I'm sure she's tired," she was tired, but she didn't want go up yet. Regardless, Baron Pierce was the one person she wouldn't fight and she let him lift her. "You won't let her take me, will you?" Alice whispered as he carried her upstairs. She gave a brief wave to Sonata, Ophie, and Echo. "No, I'm not going to let anyone take you from me again." He promised, stroking her hair. She closed her eyes, leaning into his touch like a puppy wanting to be pet. Baron Pierce set her down on the bed in her room, it wouldn't be appropriate with the Queen here for her to sleep in his bed again.

He tucked Alice in beneath the covers and made sure that Dog and Pog were beside her. "Don't turn the light off," Alice whimpered as his hand lingered over the switch. "How about this?" He plugged in a lantern the shape of a moon. "I'll leave the door ajar," he turned the light off and left, leaving Alice to sleep on her own. Alice stared at the ceiling, waiting for sleep to come. She could hear someone in the hallway, tip toeing into the room. "Skadi?" There was only one person that could be. Monaka closed the door behind her and sat on the end of the bed. "That's not my name," she whispered, pulling the blanket over her head so that she wouldn't have to see her sister. It was silent for a moment, then, "Alice?" She drew the blanket off of her head slowly, peeking out at her sister. She seemed different somehow, wearing only a nightgown. There was none of the finery of guards or dresses, just a faerie in a gown, her wings so similar to Alice's own.

"Why did you come here?" Alice asked quietly. "I came to see you, to bring you home." Alice sat upright, "but you died. I saw you die," Monaka shook her head. "I was shot, but I was saved. I've spent all this time looking for you, but those nasty demons cut off your wings." It was clear why Monaka was trying so hard to take her away, she didn't like the demons. "You let him hurt me," Monaka shook her head, she reached out and hesitated when Alice flinched, her hand falling back to her side. "I didn't know he was going to do that. I'm sorry S-Alice, I merely asked him to extract you from this place. I didn't realize he had the intention of torturing you." Monaka reached out again, taking Alice's hand. "I want to do what's best for you, faerie's can't stay with demons. It's against the rules."

"I want to stay with Baron Pierce. He's nice to me, he bought me from the human traders and he gave me Dog and Pog. He gave me this room and all these nice things." Monaka's hand tightened around her own. "Tomorrow I'll see if this demon isn't like the others, as you say. All demons I've met are the same, they're selfish, nasty creatures. I don't want you to be influenced by their violence. You need to be somewhere safe, with people who know how to help you grow." Alice shook her head, "I'm safe here." She whimpered, pulling her hand back. "I'll see about that tomorrow. Goodnight Alice," Monaka rose, leaving. She left the door open, the light from the hallway filling in. Alice lay back against her pillows, unsure if she was going to be able to sleep.

|| Countdown to X Day|| Sound Horizon ||

With the sound of the crickets cricketing and the birds chirping in the forest outside the estate, Ophelia found herself waking up before schedule. She Sonata and Calciferous had planned out a bit of an early meeting to figure out if there was anything they could do to get Queen Monaka to back off and let Alice live her life. "I don't see why we have to entertain her." Sonata growled, her once vibrant eyes now steely like cold daggers. "She got Alice hurt! She clearly doesn't have her best interests at heart." Neither of the three Baronlings were happy about the rude guest. "Hey, it won't be so bad." Calciferous forced a grin, trying to cheer both of the girls up. "We just gotta do as normal, right?"

"It'll be harder with her traumatized without a chance to rest after what Messiah did." Ophelia explained, pruning her wing feathers with a special comb they bought for her from Amien's town market. Cal slumped his shoulders, looking a little bit discouraged now. "But we have to entertain her or a diplomatic incident may happen." If they didn't placate the Fae Queen, they ran a very real risk of Monaka simply choosing to take Alice by force, just like last time. Would she call for Messiah's help again? You could never know for sure with the fae, if she was that desperate she may just do that. "We just gotta be really good for Alice, more than ever before! Isn't that the best way to handle this?" Calciferous made a big smile, trying to make Ophie and Sonata let go of their brooding scowls.

At the breakfast table everyone was gathered. For once poor Ophie couldn't come late, because she had woken up far too early this morning in order to talk things out with Cal and Sonata. On either side of Monaka were her two armored guards, and Ophie couldn't help but wonder if they were itching for a fight. "Eat it all, Alice." Ophie chided softly. "I'll give you your morning candy if you do." The wrapper with the candy within wiggled tantalizingly in her fingers as she dangled it in front of Alice's face, who was sitting between herself and Baron Pierce.

"I bet you stupid demons aren't even going to help her learn how to use her powers as an Oracle." One of the guards jeered, refusing to touch the food made by demons. Ayna squinted at them, flickering green specter gazing calmly at them. "We were working at it, but we're letting Alice take a break for now to recover from the trauma she suffered because someone allowed Baron King Messiah to have her." It was quite evident that Anguis and Ayna had some sort of plan. Ophie only wished that Anguis and Pierce could have planned together instead of separately. "For now, Alice needs to heal from all that was done to her." She smiled patiently at the faeries. "So please don't stress her out anymore, okay?"

Rene awoke Alice the next morning, her touch gentle. Alice stiffened at the touch, reminded of being awoken when she was still with the trader's, the way they would grab her or throw water at her to wake her up. "Alice, time to get up. You don't want to be late for breakfast, do you?" She sat up sleepily, refusing to let go of her toys. Rene carried her to the bathroom, where the bath was already ready. "I don't want a bath," Alice protested halfway through Rene taking off her nightgown. "I'm sorry Alice, but everyday starts with a bath. This way you're squeaky clean," Rene plopped her in the tub and started scrubbing, having managed to pry Dog and Pog from her arms. Alice tried to wriggle away when Rene began to scrub, rolling up her sleeves so that they did not become wet.

Rene dressed Alice in a pretty new dress and braided her hair in two plaits down her back, tying the ends with ribbons. After teeth brushing, it was time to go downstairs. Rene set her down between Ophie and Baron Pierce, Alice staring at her plate. She wasn't hungry, but Ophie was trying to bribe her with candy. "Okay," Alice picked up her fork. Monaka arrived shortly after, fashionably late and looking immaculate. She took a seat at the other end of the table, her three guards stationing themselves around her. She raised a hand when one of them sneered at the demons. "That is not how we behave. Baron Perce was generous enough to open up his home to us, show a little gratitude." Monaka kept her expression neatly arranged, she had a similar poker face to Baron Pierce; giving nothing away.

Alice glanced at her sister, who seemed to be peacefully eating her breakfast, the guards hesitantly picking up their forks and knives, seeing that their Queen was open to eating the food the demons had provided. Diplomatic visits were an important part of being a Baron, this was a lesson for the Baronlings as much as it was an important visit for Alice. After all, this was her sister and should she change her mind and wish to return with Monaka to the land of the faeries, Baron Pierce would not stop her. He would be angry about losing something he thought was his, as all demons would be, but he would not inhibit Alice from returning to her family. "If everyone is done, why don't we go outside to the garden?" Baron Pierce suggested.

He lifted Alice up, who had managed to finish most of her food in hopes that Ophie would actually give her candy. "I think a stroll through the orchards can do us all some good." He wanted to show Queen Monaka the vast expanse of fresh fruit and vegetable, as well as having plenty of outdoor space for Alice to roam around. "That sounds wonderful," Monaka stood, smoothing out the invisible wrinkles in her dress. "Let's all go for a walk," the guards stood as soon as the Queen did. They carried no weapons, but the threat of magiks was clear enough.

|| Countdown to X Day|| Sound Horizon ||

Monaka arrived dramatically late. What, did she want applause or attention for coming so late to the table? Ophie wasn't impressed by any means. This woman who masqueraded as Alice's beneficiary had no care in the world for what Alice wanted or needed. Having to entertain and play with someone like Fae Queen Monaka made Ophie feel sick to her stomach. Sadly, that was the only thing they could really do now. A part of her hoped the two fae guards would continued to be rude, at least that would give them a reason to kick the fae out of their home. Unfortunately, Monaka got them to shut up. "Maybe they should be better trained if they were assigned on such a mission." Ayna's voice was scathing. "Enough, Ayna." Anguis added quickly, her smile soft and hidden. "You made your point." Did Monaka even care that Alice's pain was all her fault? Did she know that by coming here, it would only cause Alice more pain?

Well, megalomaniacs who wore crowns didn't care about anyone but themselves so even if she knew, Ophie figured it wouldn't make a difference anyways. Baron Pierce suggested that they go out to show Monaka the gardens. They decided to take a walk, but not before Ophie handed Alice the candy with a little smile. "Relax today, Alice. We'll take care of everything." Sonata crossed her arms, it was clear in her eyes she had no intention of playing friends with the enemies. Calciferous had an entirely different tack though. "And then Sonata yelled boo and we scared Baron Pierce!" He chuckled, retelling the story to the fae, walking in step with them. "Pierce punished us after by forcing us to eat vegetables, but it was fun to finally get to startle him." To his credit, one of the guards chuckled, letting down his guard a tiny bit.

The garden was vast and beautiful. After Baronness Katsiya's attack it seemed that Pierce was able to ensure the garden continued to flourish and grow despite the fire that once engulfed the gardens. Would the fae be impressed by such a thing? Surely they didn't expect demons to care about nature and gardens. Ophie didn't expect this either when she first arrived, it was something of a shock to see a demon as gentle and kind as Pierce. Pierce was giving them the tour speech, explaining the plants and the vegetables, some of the servant staff offered samples of vegetables to everyone, but Ophie figured she would pass on that. She needed to stay on guard of course.

"Here, put your tails like this." Sonata said suddenly, bending Ophie's tails before the angel could react. "Wh-hey!" She jumped, surprised by the sensation. "Okay, that should be good." Sonata strutted over and lifted Alice up by the waist, placing her in the tail basket she made out of Ophie's twin tails. "Keep it snug so it supports her weight." Ophie was small, but the tails helped out so that she could properly give Alice a piggy back ride. "She smells a little, but fine." Ophie rolled her eyes. "Tell me if it's uncomfortable so I can shift my tails around, Alice." As the guards watched Alice being placed on Ophie's back one of them gave a little glare. "I don't want Alice walking too much and running out of energy." Sonata said loudly enough for the fae to hear. "After being tortured horrifically for five days straight, she needs to conserve her strength."

Alice took the candy from Ophie and popped it into her mouth almost immediately. She slid off of her seat, feeling slightly dizzy. She was quiet, hugging Dog and Pog against her as hse followed everyone outside to the gardens. "Oh Alice, your shoes." Rene sighed, noticing that the faerie had abandoned them, most likely before they had left the house. "I don't like shoes," Alice whispered, wiggling her toes in the grass. Rene pat her head, "It's alright. I'm sure a little sprite like you wants to get her feet dirty anyhow." Alice had finished her candy, the sour taste now lingering in her mouth. "I'm sorry," Alice squirmed, but Rene shook her head. "You don't have to apologize silly, let's keep walking, or else we'll fall behind the others." Alice nodded, Baron Pierce had already begun the tour.

Queen Monaka was keeping up with him, the guards maintaining a respectful distance. "Alice, do you want to hold my hand?" Sonata offered, holding out a hand. Alice nodded, taking Sonata's hand in her own. She was clearly tired, there were dark bags under her eyes from the little sleep she had gotten. She moved to tuck Pog into her dress so that she could carry both of her toys easily. They stopped in the peach orchard first, the one closest to the garden in the backyard. Baron Pierce was giving Monaka a talk about the hydroponics of the garden and offered peaches to all who stood there. Alice was already growing tired, she looked at her toes in the grass, Sonata releasing her hand and walking over to Ophie to play with her tails.

Alice looked up as Sonata lifted her, placing Alice in the basket that she had just created. "I'm comfortable," Alice said softly. They continued on the tour, Baron Pierce showing Monaka majority of the orchard and explaining the plants that were thriving under his careful watch. The humans there had a good life, they were clearly eager to please the Baron that provided a good life for them. "Those woods," Queen Monaka stopped him. "What lays beyond them?" Baron Pierce pondered for a moment. "The wilds," he replied. His mansion was on the very edge of Amiens, the sleepy garden town outside of Paris. "Those are unclaimed lands." Monaka nodded, "I see." They continued on again, Baron Pierce ending the tour when they reached the garden again.

"If you'd like, I can arrange a tour of the town as well." It was nearly lunch time now, Alice had fallen asleep in the basket of Ophie's tails. Faeries thrived most underneath the sun, their skin glittering slightly. Alice was no exception, with her wings back, it was clear that her fearie-roots were showing. She started awake when someone laughed, Baron Pierce had told a joke and the Queen laughed in earnest. "You are quite the charmer," they exchanged illicit smiles and Alice flailed, forgetting that she was being held by Ophie's tails. "Is it lunch already?" She asked sleepily, removing Pog from the top of her dress, where the toy had been resting.

Ophelia was honestly, a little bit agitated. She and Sonata really needed to go and get points, and they weren't getting any for being here. As important as it was for Alice to get to stay with them here, Ophie needed to make sure her numbers were up so that she could complete her duty as an Angel Knight. Her job was to slay Baron King Messiah and plunge the world of demons into chaos. Thanks to her black knife once wielded by Iflet Seylum, she knew she would be able to take him out. Sonata was stiff too, even as she placed Alice into the basket of tails. Alice quickly fell asleep, it seemed she was quite comfortable like this. "She's really precious." Sonata said but there wasn't much life in it. "It'll be okay." Ophie said. "I'm supposed to be the grump of the group, not you."

As Calciferous continued chatting up the two Fae Guards, telling them jokes and even getting some laughs and some jokes in return, as Monaka and Pierce appeared to be getting along despite how they both wanted different things for Alice's eventual fate, they finished the tour of the gardens. Alice began flailing until she realized where she was. Ophie helped Alice back down, gently lowering her so her feet once again touched the ground. "Yeah, we're going to break for a little lunch before heading into town." Rene and the other servants had already set up the picnic blanket and made sure to make the area clear of any insects that might want to take bites out of the food. Calciferous rushed over to sit with the two other Baronlings as Ophie and Sonata made themselves comfortable.

"You guys should try to be more social!" Cal said with a grin, looking as if he'd had the time of his life. "Maybe you should spend less time schmoozing and more time worrying about Alice." Sonata's expression was dark. It was clear she viewed the fae as enemies rather than guests. Ophie felt the same - they wanted to take Alice away, didn't they? "The guards are really cool. One of them is gay and has a boyfriend, and the other one loves watching old human musicals on the little CD things." Cal's smile was animated and joyous. He truly was a social creature, wasn't he? "What if we showed Alice a musical?" He asked and Ophie shrugged. "Would the technology scare her?" Alice barely knew what a screen was, let alone how to watch something on it.

The human servants unveiled the baskets, with gourmet sandwiches and tea and teacakes waiting inside to be consumed. "Do you want Pierce to feed you, Alice?" Sonata asked, wondering if Alice wanted to go back to her favorite person. "She can stay with us if she'd prefer too." Ophelia added, making sure Alice knew that she could choose anything she wanted. "Where are you going to eat, Ca-" Before Ophelia could finish she saw Cal already returning to socialize with the fae guards, chatting them up as if they'd been best friends all their lives.

Alice rubbed her eyes, trying to wake herself up. "I'll sit with you," Alice elected. Baron Pierce was busy entertaining their guest, after all and the farther Alice was from Monaka, the better. She clambered onto the bench between Ophie and Sonata, who both seemed to be upset about something. Alice looked between them, then at Monaka. "Alice, this is for you." She couldn't eat the same food as the demons, of course, so Rene brought her, her own plate. There were sandwiches in the shape of hearts, a handful of baby carrots, and a miniature cupcake. Alice reached for the cupcake first and felt the oppressing feeling of eyes. She went for the sandwiches instead, taking a bite.

"Do you like it?" Sonata asked, trying to be bubbly despite how much pain she was in. Alice nodded slowly, taking another bite. It was sweet and salty at the same time, she liked it, she decided. "What is it?" Alice looked between Ophie and Sonata for answers, feeling safe between them. "Peanut butter and jelly," Alice took a third bite, she liked peanut butter and jelly, she decided. Had she twin tails, like Ophie, they would surely be swishing. Instead, she had heavy translucent wings that she did not know how to use. Could she ask Ophie to teach her to fly? Alice glanced back at Ophie's leathery bat wings, which seemed to be resting loosely against her back. "Don't lean too far back, or you might fall." Sonata warned and Alice straightened up.

She took a few bites out of her baby carrots, wondering if she would always be this small, or if she would get as big as Monaka some day. She looked down at her chest, where Pog was nestled. Dog was sitting on the table, face a bit too close to the cupcake. "When is Monaka gonna leave?" Alice asked quietly, wanting her sister to go already. It seemed that Cal was enjoying the presence of the guards, eh was sitting and laughing with them. On the other end of the table, Baron Pierce and Monaka seemed to be growing close, a bit too close. Her hand brushed his own and instead of moving away, like Alice wished he had, he seemed to lean closer. Was it her imagination, or did she sense little hearts fluttering between them?

"Ophie, Sonata, Cal, you three should go and begin collecting points when you're done eating." Baron Pierce said suddenly, "after all, you don't have much longer until the next tea party." He intended to keep Alice well away from Baron King Messiah's clutches and his Baronlings couldn't exactly show up with no points. Feodth would more than likely be disqualified due to the meddling of his Benefactor and the attempt at kidnapping, which was against the rules. No outside Baron interference was allowed, but clearly Rafflesia hadn't gotten that memo.

|| Countdown to X Day|| Sound Horizon ||

Ophelia ate quietly with Alice at her side and Sonata seemed a little pacified as well thanks to that. Cal had went off an abandoned them to go socialize with the fae guards, but if he was having fun Ophie supposed she didn't mind. It was better than a depressed Calciferous or a discouraged Calciferous after all. Was he doign the right thing by befriending the fae folk? Ophie didn't know, but angels always did look down on the fae. They were flighty, they could never be trusted, they weren't the type to honor agreements or contracts. They were controlled by emotion and whim, they were simply too different from the civilized structure of living that angels were used to. At least Alice seemed to like the sandwiches.

"Hopefully soon she'll leave." Sonata made a dirty expression, and shook her head. Baron Pierce suddenly called out to the three Baronlings that they needed to go out and collect points. Ophelia nodded, having had an itching feeling in the back of her stomach the whole time about that. She and Sonata were still at zero after having been defeated by Feodth thanks to his benefactor's drugs. Calciferous was doing okay though, having a good amount at 22 points. "We haven't gone out as the three of us in a while!" Calciferus seemed excited. "Let's get ready and go, there's points to be gained for all three of us!" He rushed the girls as they finished their sandwiched and were almost dragged away from the picnic mat by him. Would Alice be okay with just Pierce to keep her out of the fae's clutches? Ophie only hoped Monaka didn't have a plan to trick Pierce and steal Alice away.

Together the there Baronlings went about a tour of Amiens, trying to do as many good deeds as possible. Ophie's wings hurt from having to save so many kittens from climbing trees, and Cal was always happy to help old ladies cross dangerous streets. Sonata simply spend hours reorganizing books in the local library, making sure it was all in good proper order according to the Dewey Decimal System. Once the sun turned orange and overcast, evening was about to begin. "Let's head back. We some points today." Sonata said, flashing them her tag, which read eight points. "I have seven." Ophie added, hoping it would be enough for this week. "You two should cheer up. It's not often you get to meet fae." Cal had a bit of a grin on his face.

"But she-" He shook his head with a smile. "Everyone makes mistakes. I'm sure Monaka didn't know what kind of person Baron King Messiah was when she made the deal with him." Ophie shook her head, her wings tense against her back. "It's not a simple mistake, Cal. I think she genuinely doesn't care much about Alice at all." Her eyes narrowed, a crimson glow coming from the irises. "She never considered Alice's opinion, even once." "I don't like her seducing Pierce." Sonata grumbled, upset. She saw the hearts and didn't like what she saw. "C'mon, it's not that bad. Let's go back to Amiens now, okay?" Cal had a big grin, wanting Ophie and Sonata to be happier, like they used to be.

Alice watched Ophie, Sonata, and Calciferous leave. She didn't want them to go, "Bye," she said quietly, watching them go. Baron Pierce came closer, lifting her off of the bench. "You barely touched your food, normally you clean your plate." He brushed her hair out of her face, tucking it behind her ear. "It's because Dog wanted the rest," Alice replied simply, pointing to Dog, whose face had taken a nose dive onto her plate. "I'm sure Dog will save you your cupcake at least," Baron Pierce lifted it and Alice took it, licking the frosting off of the top. "See? It's good isn't it?" She nodded, taking a nibble. Queen Monaka rose, waltzing over, her dress billowing in the breeze. "I think it's about time Alice had a flight lesson." She said, eyeing the wings on Alice's back.

"Are you sure that's a good idea? She just ate," Baron Pierce said, placing Alice back on the ground. She ran to grab Dog from the table, not wanting to forget him. "Yes, after food is the best time to fly, it's when you have the most energy. Come Alice, I'll show you what it means to be a faerie." Alice could see it in her eyes, Monaka hoped that Alice would change her mind, that she would go with her willingly. "First, you're going to try and spread your wings out, like this." She turned around, showing Alice her back. Monaka's wings spread out, large and beautiful, like that of a holographic butterfly. Could she really do that? Monaka made it seem so simple. Alice closed her eyes and took a deep breath, flexing the muscles in the back. "There you go! Perfect!" She opened her eyes quickly, had she really done it? Was it truly that simple? Alice turned her head, her eyes widening. Yes, her wings were open,

"I-I did it," she breathed, turning. She did it! She did something right! She turned towards Baron Pierce, her eyes sparkling. It was the closest he had ever seen her to smiling. "Yes Alice, you're doing great!" He smiled encourangingly as she turned back towards Monaka. "What do I do next?" Monaka smiled, seeming patient. "Next, we're going to jump as high as we can." Alice nodded, "on the count of three. One," Monaka held up three fingers, Alice wound up, trying to remember what jumping looked like. "Two," Monaka lowered another finger. "Three!" Alice jumped as hard and as high as she could, her wings catching the wind. Just like that, she was taken upwards in a swell, carried by the wind like a kite. Monaka flew up to meet her. They were not all that high, in fact, they were just barely above the mansion.

"Very good Alice, you're already a natural! Now, flap!" She nodded, flexing the muscles in her back again. Her wings hummed as they beat furiously, perhaps a bit faster than needed. "It's alright, once you get used to the rythm of it, it'll be easier. Now, turn your body right to go right and left to go left, let's make a circle." They went in slow circles around the mansion. Alice waved to Baron Pierce, who looked like an ant from where she was. He waved back, smiling encouragingly. Alice wasn't sure how long they were up there for, practicing turns and Monaka teaching her tricks (like doing a flip!) But Alice knew, right then, it was why she was always looking at the sky.

The last lesson was landing, she nearly crashed, Baron Pierce reaching a vine out to keep her from going through a window. Monaka landed with elegance and grace, her hair barely seeming rustled by the wind. "With time and practice, your landings and take offs will get easier." Her wings drooped, relaxing. "I like flying," Alice decided. Baron Pierce smiled, patting her head. "And what a good flier you are." Monaka smiled, her hands clasped in front of her. "I can see just how happy you make her." She said softly, perhaps a bit jealous that her little sister prefered a strange demon over her own flesh and blood.

"They're back!" Rene called, oh? They were back already? "I want to go show them," Alice said, breaking away from Baron Pierce and running inside. "She really does love you," Monaka said softly, the two of them alone in the garden. "I've done my best to give her a good life." Monaka nodded, "I can see that." She strode forward, Baron Pierce wondering if this would be the end of it.

"Please allow me to impose upon you for two more days. I would like to observe Alice to make sure she is safe in this environment." It was not an unfounded request, "I will honor it." Baron Pierce promised, shaking her hand. "And it is never a bother, you are free to come and see Alice whenever you wish."

"Remember, you two." Calciferous said as if he were a teacher at a seminar or something. "The fae could be our enemies. And the best way to defeat an enemy is to turn them into a friend. I don't think they mean harm, they just don't understand that we're good for Alice." He gave a big smile as they took the bus back to Amiens, despite Ophelia's flinch and Sonata's harsh glare. "And they're Alice's real family. We're her family too... just think of the fae as in-laws or something. We have to deal with them, so we might as well make it pleasant while they're here." He took both their hands in his own and squeezed tight. "Wouldn't it be good for Alice to get closer to her biological family too?"

The whole way back Cal was trying to make them agree to stop being so hostile and anti-social when it came to the fae. Neither Ophie nor Sonata had a feeling that they were ready to forgive the Fae Queen Monaka for putting Alice in danger by alerting Baron Messiah to her existence. The suffering Alice went through was a lot for someone as fragile as her, who already had a hard enough life living neglected in the selling cages. Even so, when they returned, they saw Alice running to them, excited. "Alice can fly now! She knows how to fly!" Rene exclaimed in excitement, rushing with Alice to greet the three Baronlings. "You can?" Those colorful wings actually worked? That was good, it meant Alice was growing healthily as she was meant to.

"That's great, Alice!" Sonata beamed, taking Alice's hand gently. "You're becoming quite the talented little thing, aren't you?" If Alice could fly now, then maybe Ophie could take her to the skies. She wasn't sure how to make that offer though. Maybe Alice was too tired to want to demonstrate her new skill for them? "Why doesn't Ophie take you flying?" Cal spoke for her, grinning from ear to ear. "You could go on a short one right now if you wanted." Neither Cal nor Sonata could take to the air, but Ophelia had these wings since she was born, though they were disguised by magic to make them look like demon wings.

"Oh, maybe Ophie could show you some angel flying tricks?" Sonata teased, looking at the little faerie Oracle. "I'll catch you if things go wrong too." She offered her hand to Alice, so that they could fly together if she wanted to. "But I think our wings are a bit different, so my angel training might not apply for you." Still, flying was one of the things that calmed Ophie down. Angels loved being connected to the sky after all. It would be nice if she could share the weightless bliss with Alice too.

Alice ran to greet them, they seemed tired from their day of working. Rene spilled the news to them, letting them know that Alice had learned to fly. "Monaka showed me how," Alice was excited to tell them. Baron Pierce was still holding Dog and Pog for her, since she hadn't wanted them to get lost while she was flying. Alice nodded her head when Ophie questioned her. She flexed the muscles in her back, it was easier now that she knew how to. Her wings went up, glinting in the light of the sunset that filtered in through the windows. It would be dark out soon, Alice knew. She was tired, flying took a lot of energy out of her, but she liked it. Perhaps that was why Monaka had said that it was best to fly after eating? Speaking of which, she was hungry, she wished she had eaten her second sandwich.

"Okay," they wanted Ophie to fly with her, Alice would go. "Let's go," she tugged on Ophie's arm, leading them all outside. The servants were preparing dinner, they had lit torches so that when the sun went down, they would still have plenty of light. There were also lanterns floating slightly above the table, as though suspended there by magic. "We'll be eating soon," Baron Pierce assured them. He was still speaking to Monaka in the garden, holding both of Alice's comfort toys for her. "I'm going to fly with Ophie. Can you watch Dog and Pog longer?" Alice asked, hoping he wouldn't mind. "Of course," Baron Pierce pat her head. "Don't tire yourself out too much, we're going to have dinner soon."

"Can you show me the tricks?" Alice asked. She jumped into the air, remembering what Monaka had taught her. Alice flapped her wings hard, she was too afraid to go higher than the mansion. Monaka had said that once she grew used to it, it would become easier. After all, her wing muscles had deteriorated after her's were cut off. "Ophie, Ophie, what are those?" Alice pointed up to the sky, the lights that twinkled down on them. What were those called? Alice had seen them from her window, but she didn't know. They still looked so far away. "I want to hold one," she reached her hands up, but she could not touch them still. How far away were they? Alice wanted to know.

"What are you gonna show me?" Alice asked, her stomach growling. She couldn't wait for dinner, she had worked up quite the appetite. "Look what I can do!" She did a flip, well, it was more of a saumersault, coming right back up. "See? Did you see Ophie?" From up here, everyone on the ground looked like ants. Alice held up one thumb, blocking out Monaka completely. "I can do it again if you weren't wathcing." Alice offered, flying closer to her. They couldn't go too close though, otherwise the wind would mess them up.

|| Countdown to X Day|| Sound Horizon ||

So Alice wanted to fly? Not only that, but everyone else was looking at them expectantly. It seemed Ophelia didn't really have a choice in the matter then. Oh well, flying was fun either way. Once they were outside feeling the evening wind on their cheeks, Ophelia smiled at the little fae Oracle. "Okay, let's fly." She said, pulling away from Alice. It wouldn't do to have them try to fly too close to each other and have their wings get all tangled up together after all. Once there was safe enough distance Ophelia beat her wings, her light bones rising up into the air with the power of her wings flapping. Sometimes a running jump was better too, but Angels didn't need that. Just like always, there was a sensation of elation rushing through her lungs and her veins as she rose to the sky. All angels felt this after all.

Alice's wings were far prettier than the pure white down of Ophie's own wings, hidden under an illusion of a dark leathery texture. "Sure, but let's get higher first." She replied to Alice's request to see her tricks. They rose even higher, above the trees, above even the roof of Baron Pierce's manor. They could see it all from here, Paris's Eiffel Tower gleaming in the distance, the city sprawl just tucked behind the horizon. Alice pointed up at the stars, her small body moving deftly to Ophie's own flight. "Stars." Ophie explained, having explained them once before for the Oracle. "They decorate the night sky so everyone knows that there'll always be light, even in the darkest of nights." She chuckled as Alice expressed her desire to touch one, unable to reach. "Maybe ask Baron Pierce to get one for you, but they're a little far away."

Alice now wanted to see some tricks. "Sure." Ophelia did a spin then twisted into a sort of corkscrew move, making a spiral as she moved, two smaller rings unveiling themselves just a little above her hips to help her control her movement. "Your flip was nice too." She said, giving a little smile to Alice. They were so high in the air, but as nice as it was, they had to land sometime. "Let's go eat now, I'm sure you're hungry." She began to descend, her silver hair flying up, framing her face as the ground rose to meet them. "How was the day with Monaka? When will she leave?" Ophie couldn't wait. Everything was better when it was just the main family.

Finally the flying pair landed back on the ground where Calciferous grinned, a camera in his hands. "I got some nice pics." He said, beaming with delight. Even Sonata managed to break into something like a smile. "I remember at first you hated her." She teased, nudging Ophie in the side. "Let's get some food." She muttered, shaking her head. She could smell it from here, and no doubt Alice was all tuckered out now.

Alice watched Ophie's tricks with wide eyes, they were much better than Alice's tricks. Ophie wanted to go back down and Alice nodded, tired. "I'm hungry." She agreed, flying back down with Ophie. "Um, three more days." Alice said quietly, "she wants to stay longer." She fell silent after that, not feeling like saying anything more. They were waiting for them when they landed, Cal having taken pictures of them up in the sky. "I wanna see," Alice tugged on his sleeve and he turned his camera towards her. She had never seen a camera before. "How does it work?" She asked, wanting to know. "Well, you look through this hole and press this button, then it captures the picture forever!" Forever? So Alice could look at this picture forevre?

"Can I try it?" She asked, tugging on his sleeve again. Cal handed her the camera, Alice held it, finding it heavier than she had thought. She lifted it up, looking through the eyehole and taking a picture of Baron Pierce holding Dog and Pog. "Alright, I think it's time for supper." He waltxed over to them, lifting Alice up. She handed the camera back to Cal and took her toys, tucking them underneath both of her arms. Baron Pierce sat her next to himself this time, across from Monaka. Alice looked down at her food, she had some sort of meat, something green, rice, and a small slice of cake. It smelled good and she was very hungry, so she picked up her fork and dug right in. She was tired from all of the flying, it took a lot of strength and energy from her. Now her wings sagged on her back, no longer feeling as heavy.

She cleaned her plate this time, unlike with lunch, and seemed to be falling asleep at the table. "I'll take Alice upstairs," Rene suggested, lifting her up off of the bench. "Goodnight," Alice rubbed her eyes, Baron Pierce patting her head. "Goodnight Alice," he feared that as soon as Alice left, Ophie and Sonata would grow hostile, but he wouldn't keep her from resting. He trusted that his Baronlings could keep themselves in line long enough to that they would not lash out at Queen Monaka. "I have some good news," he said once Alice was whisked away. "Queen Monaka has agreed to let Alice remain here." The Queen sat up a bit straighter, her expression serene as she sipped at her wine. "So long as you prove you can keep Alice safe. She seems happiest here." Versus in Magnolia, where she seemed to be under extreme duress.

"Are you ready for sleep?" Rene asked, opening up the door to Alice's room. Alice nodded, rubbing her eyes. "Tired," she murmured. "Sit up now, just long enough that I can put you in pajamas," but as soon as Rene wiggled Alice's dress off, the child flopped over, asleep. Rene sighed, carefully putting Alice's nightgown on her and tucking her underneath the blanket. It was a good thing she was small and easy to lift, had she been a bit bigger, say, Ophie's size, it would've been much more difficult. "Goodnight Alice," Rene turned the lights off, making sure that the nightlight was on, just in case Alice woke up.
