"What a well groomed young lady!" Most people would say if they saw Narisia Seraphim. As the one with all the hopes of the crown upon her shoulders, of course poise and etiquette would be beaten into her, without a single hair misplaced at any social gathering. When showing her face to the public she's always immaculate and emotionless, not even a flicker of light in those cold eyes of hers. There's no room for emotion when you're fit to rule the Kingdom of Ourania after all. With shining jewelry and finery to sharpen her appearance, Narisia Seraphim is always to be perfect.

Ellen Winter is what you'd call someone prim and proper. Her hair is always straight and neat, and her clothes are always well pressed and matching. A tidy young lady, was there a wild bone in her body at all? Compared to her more rambunctious cousin, Crescent, Ellen's much more restrained in both body language and dress. Naturally she's not as stiff and rigid as she used to be, but some things never truly change. Quite, mysterious, with pale skin and raven hair, you could consider Ellen to be something of a classical beauty.

"To rule Ashia, you must be as strong and harsh as a blizzard's stormy wind."

For a long time Narisia Evangelia Seraphim was raised on that tenet. From the beginning her mother took charge, entranced by the same very blue eyes that the queen herself possessed. King Azel was busy dealing with the war with Tartaria, so he didn't have time to intrude on the mother's training of her daughter. As Ashia's resources dwindled and it's armies continued to lose, the other noble families had doubt on Queen Narina's skill to be Queen. Was she strong enough? Did she have what it takes to support King Azel's efforts to keep Ourania strong? As the courts whispers continued to grow Narina's kind and gentle hand became harsh and cruel. Her warmth became cold, and Narisia was thrust into harsh training to become an heir to prove everyone wrong. "You can't play with toys." Narina would say, slapping the toys away. "You can't play games. You must become proper, or they'll never respect you." Little Narisia was forced to grow up or face the whip's lashing punishments.

Ashia was not in a good state of affairs. The city was split into three tiers, The Rubble Tier where the least educated and most impoverished lived, the Blossom Tier, where those with comfortable lives looked down upon those from below, and finally, at the top of the food chain, the Untouchable Tier, for the elites, the rich, and their cohorts to make their lives. As the noble families played politics, trying to take away from one another, many eyes were on the younger generation, expecting the children to also compete with one another for authority and power. Above the rest were three standout children. Narisia Seraphim was one of them, Itward Cherubim, young scion of the Cherubim house was the second, and petite Aine Dorones with her angelic smile was the third. Rather than fight amongst each other, the three became friends, staying above all the other young nobles.

It was a lot of work and stress, but Narisia was finally earning her mother's approval. As long as she studied harder than the rest, worked harder than the rest, things would be well.

Finally, the war came to an end. There were peace talks being done between King Azel of Ashia and King Spirulus of Tartaria. They negotiated peace, and Narisia would be arranged to marry the young Prince Semyon of Tartaria, with his hair as white as snow and pale skin, like most Tartarians, they lived underground and didn't see much of the sun above their sandy ceiling. Neither Narisia nor Semyon were happy with this. She was busy learning about technology and machines, she had no time to court a Prince. And Prince Semyon was also unhappy, he was in love with someone else. But for the sake of peace and sparing more lives, the young Heirs chose to honor the decision their parents made.

Tensions continued to grow, however. Not from Tartaria, but from within Ashia's own walls. The Rubbles and the Blossoms were rising up, raging against the elite noble class. There was unrest, and populism began filling Ashia's streets. Who was leaking information to the lower tiers? Who was spreading knowledge and learning to those below? "Itward, Nee, there's a secret I haven't told either of you yet." Aine Dorones smiled, holding her hands out to them. "I'm the one teaching the Rubbles how to read, how to write. I'm going to make a better Ashia. Won't you two help me?" Itward frowned, troubled. He was afraid. "Isn't that dangerous?" But Narisia knew what had to be done. "It's a shame it had to be you, Aine. as the Princess of Ashia, I order your arrest for treason against the Crown." As Itward protested in confusion and fear, Narisia closed her heart off. Friends didn't matter, only maintaining balance did.

But the disappearance of Aine Dorones only made matters worse. What was once a peaceful enlightenment of the lower classes became a violent surge once their angel was taken away from them. It was an unstable situation, and they were all clambering for Princess Narisa to come out. Queen Narina invested a lot of time to carve and mold her into a proper successor to the throne, she couldn't just allow her to be hurt. "I'll put you to sleep." Narina said, pushing Narisia into a room. "So for now, just close your eyes."

12 year old Narisia wasn't sure what to think when she opened her eyes and found herself on a boat with a woman with golden hair on a lake. She had no memories, and could barely speak the language. "Heaven granted me a child." Leona Winter said, hugging the amnesiac child. "I'll name you Ellen, after my mother. My sister has a daughter, her name is Cress, I know you and her would be best friends."

"Rene, watch the house," Baron Pierce pulled on his coat, it was a cool spring night, after all. "Where are you going?" Rene asked, holding the door open. "No need to worry, I'll be back before midnight," he winked, the door closing behind him. She locked the door, watching through the window until she could no longer see his outline. "Alice!" Rene called, "it's time for bed." Rene poked her head into the living room, where she had been moments earlier. "Alice?" The little blonde pet was not there. "Now, where could she have gone?" Rene covered her eyes and turned around, smiling as she heard the little patter of feet running from one hiding place to the next. "Uh, uh, no bookcase." She snatched the human up before Alice could scale the shelves and send books everywhere. "Bed time silly," the human did not struggle, but submitted to Rene's grasp.

Alice lay awake in bed, hugging Dog against her. Her life was very different now. Instead of hoses once a week, there were warm baths every morning. There was food three times a day, instead of scraps every other day. She slept in a bed and not a cage, and there were plenty of head pats. Even now, beneath the blankets, it was warm and pleasant. Was it a dream? Alice wondered, afraid to close her eyes. If she did, would she wake up tomorrow, back in the cage? She turned onto her side, the light from the nightlight glittering across the floor. How long would this last? She closed her eyes at last, curling up with her toy tucked into the crook of her arm. How long until they grew tired of her? Or until they played too hard and she broke? Alice had seen it before.

"Good morning," Rene pulled the blankets off of Alice's head. "Mo...rn...in...g." Alice lifted her arms up, Rene picking her up. "The bath is ready and I've got a pretty dress for your tea party today." Tea party? Alice wondered, the dress fluffy and white, with flowers sewn into it. There was a matching blue hair ribbon and socks that went all the way up her legs. "No, no sliding down the banister," Rene scolded as Alice grabbed onto it, about to pull herself up. She followed behind Rene, Baron Pierce not sitting in his chair at breakfast. He was nowhere to be found. Alice pointed to the missing spot, "Don't worry, Baron Pierce will be here soon." He did not show up to breakfast, Alice did not want to eat without him. She waited, watching as Sonata and Calciferous dug in. Ophie was late, but that wasn't unusual.

They waited in the lounge, Alice sitting on the floor, her stomach growling. "Alice, why didn't you eat this morning?" Sonata asked, but Alice only blinked up at her, uncertain of what she meant. "I know!" Cal said suddenly, joining her on the floor. "Let's try to make Alice laugh!" He told what he called jokes, but Alice didn't understand. Suddenly he started wiggling his fingers, as though it were some sort of threat. It felt strange and Alice twitched, attempting to escape. Ophie arrived at last, asking what they were doing. Alice didn't know though, she didn't know what it was like to laugh. Baron Pierce arrived at last, "Well, it seems we're all here." He smiled, Alice jumping up to greet him.

[size=105]The motorized carriage was waiting for them, a snowflake symbol engraved on the wheels of the carriage. It had a neat design, no doubt created by their very own Baroness Vaswald. Everyone would be arriving, all the Baronlings and their accompanying Barons as well. "Here, have some of this." Ophie said, reaching into her bag to pull out a bag of strawberries. She gave some to Alice, and some to Baron Pierce, and some for herself, since none of them had eaten breakfast this morning. "Why thank you, Ophie." Baron Pierce said, taking his share of the strawberries gratefully. "Here, Alice, you eat them like this." He demonstrated by putting one into his mouth and eating it, enjoying the juice of the fruit;s flavor dancing on his tongue. "Gimme some too." Cal took a few, and gave half of his to Sonata. "I hope I won't be targeted." Sonata said in thought. "I'm the top candidate right now, so I'm the one everyone's going to have an eye on."

Already the placements were being aired on the news and on website internet blogs. Sonata Delanore was considered the most likely to end up winning over the others and becoming a proper Baron. She was the strongest for sure, even Ophie could see that. "We've got your back." Cal said with a grin, patting her on the head. "Alice will keep you safe too, won't you, Alice?" Ophie rolled her eyes at Cal's idiocy. "I doubt Alice could do much of that." She was just a frail human with barely the ability to raise her arms. If an enemy tried to hurt her she would have no way to resist. "Isn't it more likely that everyone looks down on you, Cal?" He almost didn't make it through the portal, he was the last placing of the Baronlings. "Then I'll surprise everyone by surpassing them all." He announced, nodding proudly for some reason.

The tea table was set and everyone was there waiting. At the head of the table Baron King Messiah sat. Then, on the table, the Baronlings sat on one side, and the Baron hosts sat on the other, in order of their placements. Sonata Delanore sat closest to Baron King Messiah's left side, looking prim and proper in her golden dress. Jensen Thrush grinned, wearing a neat suit with America's flag on the tie, satisfied in his second placing. Ophie shrunk a little, not wanting to sit next to him, wondering what to do with her twin tails. Another of Baron Golch's Baronlings who Ophie found was a young orphan named Lancer. His red hair blazed as he stared at the tea. "You drink it. It's a weird European thing." Jensen explained, helping the boy through it as if Ophie forced to sit between them was nothing but air. Lancer glared at Jensen who shrugged. "Just trying to help, kid." He muttered under his breath.

Polaire was picking cake bits out of her teeth with a crystal toothpick, looking bored at her brother, sitting opposite of her. Past her was a girl with strange rainbow hair that hurt Ophie's eyes. "My, this tea tastes exact-tea as expected!" She giggled, eyes shining with mirth. Her name was Jolene, and she was famous for her terrible puns that Ophie couldn't stand. Dean Weber was 7th place, sneaking glances at Ophie with something between jealousy and curiosity in his gaze. Ophie was glad to be sitting relatively far from him. Ayna barely existed in her ghostly form in eighth place, and Baroness Anguis's snakes were playing with the tea cakes, sitting opposite of Ayna. The large imposing Oriental demon, Feodth, was drinking his tea, holding the cup with an expert hand. Last but not least was Calciferous, whose hand slipped and shattered his tea cup, prompting the whole table to stare at him. Really, how could he be so stupid? The fine china looked dejected as it's broken shards scattered about the table, the music coming to a halt.

Baron Pierce lifted her, carrying Alice to the carriage. Alice tilted her head to the side when Ophie offered her red triangles. "St...ra...w...be...rr...y?" Alice held one, it smelled sweet. She watched as the others ate them, avoiding the green leaves at the top. Alice took a tentative nibble, trying it. Juice dribbled down the side of her chin, the strawberry was sweet and crisp. Alice ate another one, holding the stems in her hand until she had a handful. She held them out to Baron Pierce, who opened up the window of the carriage. "Here, we'll plant some strawberries like this," he dumped the stems outside, "in a few months, there will be strawberry bushes there." He explained, wiping up the juice from her chin and hands so that she did not get her dress messy. "Thank you Ophie, for sharing those with us. Alice, what do we say?" Alice turned to look at Ophie, there was a shadow dancing on her shoulder.

"Th..an...k...O...ph...ie." Alice said, Ophie mentioning that Alice could not protect them. She was just a frail, weak, human. Yes, the inferior race. Baron Pierce stroked her head, "humans are resiliant little creatures." He said astutely, "you never know what they are capable of." After all, they had survived this long underneath the Baron ruling. The human numbers were dwindling, slowly, but some Barons were taking emergency action and forcing them to breed. Baron Pierce would never do anything like that and his ruling has allowed the humans to thrive and procreate as they saw fit. "Don't talk down to others," Baron Pierce said pointedly, it seemed that Ophie had developed something of a habit. "And don't forget that you can work together, you don't have to be pit against one another." The carriage came to a halt, it seemed that they had arrived.

"Ah, Baron Pierce," Baron King Messiah greeted. Pierce bowed, Alice looking up at him, wondering what he was doing. "I did not realize you would be bringing your pet along," he knelt down, holding out a sweet in his hand. Pierce watched them carefully, Alice taking the candy, holding it out to Pierce. "No Alice, that's for you." He smiled, Messiah rose. "I'm afraid there are no humans allowed in the ceremony today. Zinnia," the witch appeared at his elbow. "Please see to it that Baron Pierce's pet is kept quiet during the proceedings." She nodded, holding out a hand. Alice looked between her and Baron Pierce. "Go on," he smiled, Alice taking Zinnia's hand. She watched as the others all walked into the tea party room, there was no place for a human in there. The door closed behind them, a shadow stepping out of the corridor. "Oh, look who it is Alice, do you remember Christopher?" Alice looked between them, spotting something even more interesting; a book case.

"What is she-" they both scrambled after her, pulling Alice down before she could fell the books from their places. "No, no, come, let's go visit somewhere nice." Zinnia took Alice's hand, pulling her away. She looked back at the book case, which was ever so tempting. Christopher followed them, Zinnia taking out her special key. She entered it into the lock of the first door they came across, opening it up to reveal her home. Alice looked around, recalling the space. She placed Dog on the table, Zinnia had a book case too, but before she could go for it, Christopher intervened. "No, none of that for you. Let's have our own tea party," He lifted her up, placing her on one of the chairs. There was a shadow dancing behind them, it reached out to Zinnia's hair.

Alice's eyes widened as Zinnia cast a spell, bannishing it. "You saw it too?" Christopher asked, Zinnia nodded. "They've been lurking around the child," Zinnia replied cautiously, they did not know how much Alice knew. "S...ee?" Alice asked, surprised. "I'm afraid they're thestrals." Zinnia explained, bannishing another one. "Only those who have seen death can sense them. They attached themselves to people, clever things, and use their shadows." Alice did not understand any of that, but the shadows finally had a name. She was not the only one who saw them. "Zinnia I don't think-" she nodded, understanding what Christopher meant. "I've already said too much, come, let's enjoy our own tea party."

[size=105]Ophie was not having fun at the table in the slightest. "So, now that we've had our tea, let's begin the ceremony." Baron King Messiah stared at them all, standing up to his full height. There was a pregnant pause as the others were no doubt waiting to pass out from the drugs when he let out a laugh. "Don't worry, there are no drugs this time. None of you will pass out." Calciferous still looked somewhat embarrassed as he chuckled. "Good, I thought I'd be in trouble for breaking this cup." He chuckled, grinning. Baron Messiah looked at him from the far end of the table. "Well, you will receive one punishment, Calciferous Graves." He said, making Cal flinch. "You lose 5 points." He grinned, a sigh of relief. "Well, it's only five points." Sonata suddenly raised her arm.

"Yes, Sonata?"

"What are these points for?" She asked, her eyes sharp with intent as the question left her lips. Baron Messiah seemed pleased that she picked up on that. "Well, as you all know, there are only five Baronlings that can partake in the Baron Exams every decade. That means there's going to be a process to how we determine the top five Baronlings who will undertake the Baron Exams five months from now." Everyone was tense as they listened in. "Only a pro can beat the process!" Jolene the clown demon giggled, earning several groans from around the tea table. "That's right. You all will receive points, and at the end of each month, one of you will be eliminated. In the end of the five months, there will only be five of you left."

Suddenly servants came up from behind them, attaching mechanical tags onto their wrists, each one with a number on them. Ophie glanced at hers, seeing that she had eighteen points on her tag. "All of you have points in relation to your placement on the test earlier." Sonata had twenty points to start with, and it went down by 1 for each placement until Calciferous, the tenth place, only had ten points. "Wait, I only have five points!" Cal said suddenly, realizing how serious this was. "I'm way behind now!" Everyone listened carefully, since now they wanted to know how to gain or lose points. "Points are gained in two ways: if you do something to help benefit demon society, you gain points. If you protect demons from outside threats, such as mages or vampires, you gain points. If you can fight another competitor, you steal their points."

So you could fight to get points? Ophie gulped, wondering how that would work. She wasn't sturdy like others, stealth was her only real trick to keep up with these dangerous beasts. "You lose points if you displease me, or if you break rules, or if you lose a fight against another competitor. The tags will track all of that for you." All the competitors stared at one another, already strategizing how they would do this. Sonata was the prime target. If anyone could beat her, they would get all twenty of her points. "Now, the tea party is dismissed." All competitors were to remain in Europe until the Baron Exams were complete, or until they were eliminated. Hotels were provided for the Baronlings who lived abroad, and Ophie wondered if most of the fighting would happen in those hotels. She would need to work together with Calciferous and Sonata to survive this new game.

"The tea should suppress it," Zinnia spoke softly. "Yarrow root can mask auras," Alice didn't know what that meant, but she liked the tiny cakes shaped like stars and the tea was sweet, like apple juice. "Do you have any guesses?" Christopher asked, taking a sip of his tea. "No, I already know, I sensed it the moment they brought her to me. I'm surprised Messiah hasn't noticed it yet." Alice looked between them, reaching for another cake. This one was dark on the inside, with pink frosting. "That's called chocolate," Zinnia said softly, watching as Alice munched happily on sprinkles. "Ch...oc...ol...at...e?" She asked, her mouth covered in crumbs. A napkin floated by, wiping at her mouth. Alice looked away, not wanting it to touch her, but the napkin was aggressive and took all of the sprinkles off of her face.

A knock sounded at the door, Doll poking her head in. "Oh look, it's our little friend," she smiled, joining their table. "Is the party over?" Christopher asked, arching a brow at her sudden presence. "No, I needed to sneak away, it was growing boring in there." She closed the door behind her, "they should be done soon though." She took a seat and grabbed a cake, Alice watching her curiously. "Hello little one," Doll waggled a finger at her. Alice grabbed her hand, holding it up and placing it on her head. "Yes, you're a very good girl," Doll smiled. The door opened again, this time without a knock. The tea party had ended, Baron Pierce arrived with his three Baronlings. "I hope she wasn't too much of a handful," he said apologetically, not having realized that they wouldn't allow Alice into the tea party.

"I would like to go with you," Zinnia rose, surprising them all. "Will Baron King Messiah allow you?" Doll asked, nervous. He hardly let Zinnia off of the property and usually, only with an escort. "I'll ask him, it's been almost five years since I left. Would you mind waiting for me?" She inquired, Baron Pierce shook his head. "Go on, it would be a joy to host you for the evening." She nodded, disappearing with a puff of smoke. Alice rose, running to the bookcase almost immediately. "No, not this one," Cal grabbed her. "We can start talking strategy in the carriage," Sonata offered, knowing that Ophie was probably nervous about this new test. Only five of them would get to enter the exam, after all. "Pi..er...ce!" Alice chirped, struggling to get out of Cal's arms. "Oh look at you, that's the first time you've said my name." He reached for her, Alice settling comfortably in his arms.

Zinnia returned, using the door this time. "He says it's alright," she smiled, looking slightly relieved. "Oh good, we'll take the carriage then." Alice had nothing to contribute to the conversation, but she did try to give all of them some of the stickers Zinnia had given to her. They smelled when she scratched them and Alice wanted to share them. She gave two to Ophie, noticing that Ophie seemed tense. When they reached Baron Pierce's estate, Zinnia took a big breath in of the fresh, country air. It was only once they had stepped inside that Zinnia glanced around, her expression changing considerably. "Now, can you tell me what in the world you are doing with an Oracle?"

[size=105]It was time for the three to make a strategy. "You really let us down." Sonata said to Calciferous, frowning. "How could you let yourself lose five points! Weren't we supposed to all make it together?" With Calciferous down to 5 points, he was very easily the most likely to lose and drop out at the end of the first month. "We can't give him free wins against us." Ophie said, thinking. "Since we'll lose our points." It was all or nothing, you couldn't just give points over. "I'm sure we could do some community work and get points peacefully." Sonata said, but Calciferous had a different idea. "All I gotta do is beat up the other seven, right? There's one in particular I want to beat up." He grinned, not disappointed in the slightest. "I'm gonna show them not to underestimate me!"

With so much to think about, they were given another bombshell as Zinnia Evernight revealed what Alice's true identity was. "Oracle?" Ophie muttered in surprise, staring at Alice with a frown on her face. "You'd think I'd be able to smell that. I'm such an embarrassment to angels." Sonata giggled, seemingly entertained by Alice's identity. "It's because she's around us all the time, so she would have a demon smell on her." Calciferous looked shocked as he glanced at Zinnia. "Uh, she means angel cakes!" He laughed nervously, slapping his knee. "She knows." Ophie said to spare Cal the humiliation. "Zinnia always knew from the start." She was a witch who met angels, of course she would be able to see the truth. Cal blinked and nodded. "Yeah, I knew that! I was just testing you, silly!"

"Alice, you're an Oracle." Sonata said kindly, playing with the tiny girl's hands. "That means sometimes you can see visions of the future. Do you think you can tell us what you see?" Alice couldn't communicate very well yet but Sonata wanted her to understand what her role was, what she could do. "That way you can help us succeed in our training." Sonata's talking to Alice was interrutped by Cal laughing at Ophie. "Stickers don't go on your face!" He jeered, pointing at her forehead. "I think it's okay." The angel decided she would keep the animal stickers on her face because there was no reason to remove them yet.

There was a knock at the door then. "Reporters." Rene said, ducking her head in. "They want to interview Sonata and Ophie." Calciferous raised his hand with a smirk. "Me too! I'm a candidate too!" Even though he was last place didn't mean he was out of the count yet. "And Calciferous too." Rene corrected, nodding. "Should I let them in, Pierce?" Ophie wasn't sure she wanted to be broadcasted. "I don't think we're ready for an interview yet." Sonata muttered. "But they'll keep pestering us until they get it." Cal seemed eager for the press though, despite the other two not wanting to be part of it.

Baron Pierce's smile never faultered. "I should have known you would have sensed it," he placed Alice on the ground, who had covered him in scented stickers. "I wanted to wait until she could understand just what she was." He looked at their shocked faces, Alice wondering what all of them were so surprised about. "I've been giving her yarrow root every morning to disguise her scent," Baron Pierce admitted. "I apologize, I didn't mean to keep it from you. I had the Doctor confirm it with a blood panel." He knelt down, patting Alice's head. "The truth is, I've been looking for her for a very long time. Imagine my surprise when she turned up right under my nose." He looked at each of their faces, Ophie seemed upset that she had been unable to detect the difference. "I had my suspicions," Zinnia said, crossing her arms. "It was why I gave her the seeking stone."

Alice of course, was none the wiser. She sat down on the floor, wondering why everyone was standing around. Sonata knelt down, telling Alice that she was an oracle. "Or...ac...le?" She repeated dumbly, wondering what that meant. "I don't think she's been activated yet," Zinnia spoke softly as Sonata asked Alice what she saw. "Once an Oracle knows their potential, they can typically control the flow of their visions." Of course, normally Oracles were apprenticed as soon as their identities were confirmed. They were sought after, but the last Oracle that had belonged to Constantina had passed. With the magical world sealed up, Alice had no one to teach her what it meant. "If Yue were alive..." Zinnia trailed off, but she would not go down that train of thought.

"Fi...sh?" Alice held up Dog, offering it to Sonata. "No, that's Dog." Sonata smiled, Rene entered, informing them that the press were here to interview them. Baron Pierce, sensing their unease, rose. "I have an idea, Calciferous and I will go speak to them. You ladies can go and enjoy the evening until supper is ready." Calcifer jumped at the opportunity, of course, he wanted some screen time. Alice rose, attempting to follow Baron Pierce. "No, no, no. You stay here," Rene smiled. "I think someone upstairs would very much like to see all of you." Rene turned Alice around, who reached for Baron Pierce, but he was already walking through the doorway. "I've set up some snacks, if it should please you." Rene said, closing the door behind her as she disappeared, following Baron Pierce.

Alice looked at her sticker sheet, but she had run out of stickers. She handed Zinnia the paper, wanting more. "Watch," Zinnia smiled, waving her hand across the paper, summoning more stickers. Alice's eyes lit up in delight, she flapped the paper happily, bounding over to Ophie to give her another sticker. "Let's go upstairs," Sonata suggested. "We can strategize up there on how to get Cal some more ponts." Alice followed them, almost forgetting Dog and running back down to grab him. She clambered up the stairs on all fours, like an eager puppy, stickers in one hand, Dog in the other. There was someone waiting for them on the third floor. Arms crossed, tails swishing, Zinnia froze, her heart hammering in her chest. Alice watched curiously as her eyes welled up with tears. "Blithe!" The two practically collided against one another, their hug was so tight and so fierce.

It had been two hundred years since they had last seen one another, able to sense the other, but never crossing paths. Alice wanted a hug too and so, she clung to Ophie and Sonata's legs, watching the tearful reunion between master and familiar. "It's been so long," Blithe whispered, hesitant to relinquish her grasp. "Too long," Zinnia agreed. Blithe opened up the door to Echo's room, ushering them all inside. "Just how many fugitives is Baron Pierce keeping in his home?" Zinnia inquired as Echo sat up, rubbing her eyes sleepily. She had been awake more often than not as of late, which was a good sign. "Oh, it's you." Echo yawned, sliding out of bed. Her hair was braided behind her, Alice running to play with it as soon as she saw it. "No, no, none of that!" Echo was bigger than Alice, which wasn't saying much, but it was nice to be taller than someone.

"I would answer that question," Sonata scratched her cheek, "but I don't quite know myself."

[size=105]Queen Celeste in her glorious beauty, smiling a radiant smile that could light up all the suns in the world. Oh, if only she still had that smile, then maybe everything would be better than what it was now. "Not well." Ophie admitted with a harsh exhale, shaking her head. When was the last time Celeste had been able to show the world her smile? "Not since 200 years ago." When Queen Kitra's head was delivered to her home in Heaven, how could Celeste possibly find a reason to smile again after that? Her paintings became more erratic and frantic, more draped in madness and despair. Ophie couldn't say more than that though, she didn't want to risk anyone finding out her mission. She was here to take Messiah's head as Celeste requested, if the demons found out they would definitely stop her.

"Echo has Moia moia. It's brain smoke, her veins get thin so it's hard for them to get blood across." It was a rare human affliction but Echo suffered from it too. She knew about it due to being an angel that was made to observe several key people during the events of the Third Impact. "If there's a potion that can keep her veins healthy that wouldn't get you found out..." Naturally they couldn't let Zinnia expose herself and get Baron King Messiah's watchful eyes settle on them. He was already curious as to how Baron Pierce was able to get three successful Baronlings, a record no one else had been able to beat thus far. Ophie could use her angel magic to try and help too, but she wasn't as good at it as the Angeal family was.

Allowing Zinnia and Blithe to tend to the waking sleeping beauty Echo, Ophie glanced up to find a very strange sight. "Alice! Be careful!" Sonata cried, alarmed at the little Oracle swinging her legs from up above their heads. "If she falls we can catch her." Ophie said, deciding not to be worried. She sat under the shelf so if Alice were to fall the silverette could easily catch her before anything serious happened. She used her finger to scratch at her stickers, feeling a little itchy where they were attached to her face. "And think of how surprised Pierce would be if he saw her up there." A little bit of the prankster in the angel was coming out of the shell, but only a little bit.

It didn't take long for Baron Pierce and Calciferous to come upstairs to meet up with them. "How did the interview go?" Sonata asked glumly, staring at Cal who grinned. "I think I did good! There were a lot of questions. They want to come back another day to interview you two." Cal showed off his tag with a triumphant gleam of his fanged teeth. "I earned three points for doing the interview! It looks like answering the questions counts as a community improvement thing." It made sense, it helped the news stations flourish since everyone was interested in the eligible ten Baronlings after all. "We decided to hunt down the demon trafficking ship." Sonata told Pierce, a boat that sailed the seas, stealing weak demons left and right whenever they landed at shore to sell them and take them to places unknown. "Cal will get points if he kills the smuggler."

Zinnia listened, running her fingers through her hair in thought. "Nothing comes to mind that might help, but that doesn't mean I won't try." She had plenty of books she could look through once she returned. If the magical world wasn't closed off, she could have consulted Madame Pomfrey, but that was no longer an option. "Listen, Ophie," Echo started, she was sitting on the windowsill now, the fresh air good for her, or something of the sort. "When you return to Heaven... I want to go with you." Echo looked at them, serious. "I'm sick of Earth, this place has gone to hell. I can't even go outside 'cause I'm considered a fugitive. I miss... I miss Heaven." Alice watched them from her perch on the shelf. "I agree," Blithe said, "I don't know how much longer Echo will last here. I can finish my Baron training under Pierce."

"Baron Training?" Zinnia inquired, confused. Blithe nodded, "I want to become a Baron and make you my Apostle. Then... you won't have to serve him anymore," Zinnia reached up, touching Blithe's cheek. "The last time someone tried to do that the person I loved died a horrible death. I would hate to see the same become of you." Blithe's tails only became rigid, "I'm not going to let him have you any longer. I don't care if I have to turn you into a demon or-" she looked at the white streak in Zinnia's hair, then at Ophie. "Take Zinny to Heaven with you. She can become an angel, a full one this time and he won't control her anymore." Zinnia rose suddenly. The door opened at the same time, Baron Pierce and Cal had arrived, returning from their interview. "Rene, please inform the chef we have a guest for dinner." He said before closing the door behind him.

"Hope we aren't interrupting," Pierce looked around, glancing at Ophie on the floor, then upwards at Alice on the shelf. "My, my, who let you up there?" He reached up to bring her down, handing her Dog and her stickers. "She tried to climb one of the bookcases in the castle," Zinnia added. "And one of the ones downstairs," Blithe chirped. Alice picked up Dog and began to peel stickers off of the sheet, sticking them to Baron Pierce. "I think she's just exploring, now that she's stronger, she wants to know what's up there." Baron Pierce surmized, allowing Cal to take over as he described how the interview went. Sonata explained the mission that they hoped to undertake.

"Alright, I give my approval. I trust you three have learned enough about teamwork that you can do this together." He hoped that he had taught them as much. Alice clambered onto his lap, holding up a sticker. "I think you've decorated me enough. Zinnia, don't give her anymore, or we might find ourselves covered in stickers when we wake up."

Baron Pierce rose when he heard the cry, standing behind his Baronlings as the villager, Miles, begged Baron Pierce to protect them. "Frey," one of the former Generals. Baron Pierce removed his outter robe, handing it to Rene, who was standing worriedly by the doorstep. "I'll go too," Blithe offered. "Sonata, stay here. Frey is not a foe that can be beaten easily." Ophie and Cal had already hurried off, much to Baron Pierce's dismay. He would have prefered that they remain here while he went to take care of this disturbance. Alice watched from the window as they rushed off, it was only her, Zinnia, and Echo now. As well as the human staff that Baron Pierce emkployed. "Would you like me to bring dinner up here?" Rene inquired, poking her head into the room on the third floor.

"Yes, I suppose we'll have it here," Zinnia spoke up, since Alice didn't know why everyone had suddenly left. "I'm going downstairs a moment," to see to that villager, Miles. Now it was just Alice and Echo, there was no one there to stop her from climbing the book shelf. "No," Echo said suddenly, as though she read her mind. The demon slid off of the windowsill, kneeling on the floor where Alice was sitting. "Ec...ho?" Alice asked, wondering what she was doing. Echo snapped her fingers, a tiny fire lighting on her finger tip. Alice's eyes widened as she watched, "hold your hands out." Echo instructed, Alice did as told. Echo dropped the fire into her hands, Alice jumping in surprise. The fire did not burn her hands, in fact, it was pleasantly warm. Her eyes twinkled with curiosity. "You're like a baby," Echo admired. "Have you been living under a rock this entire time?" Alice blinked, not understanding.

Zinnia returned, subtly wiping the blood off of her hands. "How is he?" Echo asked quietly. She had been sitting on the sill when he had arrived. "There was nothing I could do. His throat was torn out of his neck." She had done everything she could to comfort Miles the demon in his final moments. Alice watched the two of them, the flame in her hands going out. She held her palms out, asking for more. "Only if you say it," Echo told her, hands on hips. She was feeling sleepy again, not having used her power in a long time. Rene arrived, setting places at the table for the three of them. Alice clambered onto one of the chairs, looking at the other two. They ate in silence for a bit, Alice ocasionally glancing out the window, fidgeting as she waited for Pierce to return.

After food, Echo went back to sleep, climbing into bed. She was off before her head hit the pillow. "I guess it's just us two," Zinnia rose, "come on, why don't we go to your room?" Alice took Zinnia's hand, shifting uncomfortably. She picked up Dog and her stickers, leading Zinnia to her room. "This is nice, an improvement from the testing clinic." Alice's eyes widened, "re...me...mb...er?" Alice asked, taking a step back, slightly fearful. "I remember it, yes. That day is one of many that I regret." Alice took Zinnia's hand, willingly this time, and led her to the ball pit. "Li...ke...th...is." Alice climbed the ladder, sliding into the ball pit. "Yo...u..tr...y." Zinnia was surprised, but nodded, climbing up the ladder to slide into the ball pit.

"Ti...re...d." Alice said after a bit of sliding and playing in the ball pit. Zinnia nodded, "I'm sure, it's been a very busy day for you." Alice looked around for Dog, yawning. She clambered out of the ball pit and into the bed, picking up the book beside the mantle and holding it out to Zinnia. "You want me to read that?" Zinnia inquired, Alice nodding. She took the book, settling on the edge of the bed. "I have a better idea," Zinnia said softly, she brushed the hair out of Alice's face and tucked the blanket in around her, feeling oddly attached to the little human. "I'll tell you a story," Zinnia offered, placing the book down and twirling a strand of hair around her finger in thought. Alice watched, noticing the white streak for the first time and holding out Dog. "No, you hold on to your friend."

Alice nodded, tucking Dog into the crook of her elbow. "Let's see... a long time ago, there was a girl in a river." Zinnia smiled as she recalled the story, telling Alice of the time that she and Yue had first met. She told Alice about how Yue had discovered she could use magic and how she had learned she could make predictions of the future. "Soon, you'll be able to do that too," Zinnia turned towards the child, only to discover she had fallen asleep. Zinnia rose hesitantly, but Alice did not so much as stir. "I'm going to leave you with a gift," Zinnia spoke softly as she dimmed the lights, noticing a lantern in the corner that projected pictures of birds on the wall. Spells were what she used, power gathering in her hands.

A spell for luck, so that misfortune would not befall her the same way it did the rest of them. It was an experimental spell, one that Zinnia had never used. A spell for the gift of language, so that Alice would no longer speak in broken sentences. Lastly, Zinnia left her with a salve to heal the physical scars on her body. Rene was waiting outside the door when Zinnia exited at last. "Ms. White Witch," Rene curtsied low, "I've made up a room for you, should you choose to stay the night." Zinnia shook her head, "I've been gone for too long already. Messiah will grow worried," Rene nodded. "Please, take this for the road," she held out a bag of cookies. "That is very kind of you, please thank Baron Pierce for his hospitality." She apparated back home, or what she considered home.

Baron King Messiah was waiting for her, drumming his fingers against the table. Zinnia stiffened, not having expected him there. "Pierce is keeping secrets, tell me what you learned." He commanded, the contract mark burning. Zinnia gasped, falling to her knees from the pain of it. "You cannot lie to me," he reached down, picking up the bag of cookies she had dropped. "He-he is not keeping anything, he does not know." Zinnia winced, thinking of Alice. She needed to keep Blithe safe, that was her priority. Zinnia squeezed her eyes shut, cursing herself. "He doesn't know that Alice is not a human," Baron Pierce leaned forward. "Interesting, tell me more."

"I've sensed it in her, she is an Oracle, the last of her kind." Zinnia panted, the pain easing as the truth was revealed. Zinnia could sense his smile, she had learned over 200 years to detect what his face did not show. He reached into the bag of cookies, waving one around before biting into it. "Interesting and he does not know?"

"No," she could lie with ease now, she had learned to do it from Christopher. "None of them do, I think perhaps the secret he has been keeping was the fact that Blithe has been staying him."

"Oh? How nice for you." He knew of Blithe and Zinnia's companionship. "I'm sure you'll be going there more often." Zinnia shook her head. "No, I would hate to disturb their training."

"Then perhaps I shall make a visit to Baron Pierce's peaceful estate. I'm sure Anguis would be overjoyed to to accompany me, since you won't."

"I'll go, but please, don't hurt them. They know nothing of the child's potential." She would need to tell Rainarch to deliver a letter to Blithe. They needed to leave, her and Echo, go somewhere safe until Baron Messiah's visit was over. She thought of Ophie, wondering if she should warn her to leave, then decided against it. After all, Ophie was a contender for Baronhood. Messiah rose, tossing a cookie towards her. "You've been a good girl, Zinnia. Have a cookie."

[size=105]It was very cold here despite them being in the middle of summer. Ophie blinked rapidly, trying to make sense of her surroundings. What was this? This wasn't Baron Pierce's castle. "You're finally up." Calciferous grit his teeth, glaring out at the bars. Ophie stared around her. Why were they in a dark and cold cell? Why were there no windows, only dim candles to light their way? Why outside the bars, were there torture materials all over? Strange sharp implements, pain devices, Ophie had a feeling she knew what was going to happen. "Who... why? Where are we?" Ophie asked, glancing about. "I don't know, but I have a bad feeling." He tried to create lightning to break them out but there was a binding around his wrist. A power inhibitor, blocking his access to his powers. Ophie had one too, but her magic didn't work the same way so it wasn't blocked.

"Welcome to my abode. My wonderful little guests." The lights swelled up and grew brighter as Baroness Katsiya grinned, spreading her arms wide. Now they could see all the torture tools in full plain view, almost waiting to get to be used on their bodies. "If this is about none of your Baronlings surviving the test, that's not our fault. Why don't you just let us go?" Cal raised his voice. He was no stranger to being tortured, he'd suffered torture multiple times now. He wasn't exactly a fan of being cut up and abused, but he was familiar with it as well. Ophie knew what he was doing. He was trying to make Katsiya focus only on him so that she would forget Ophie was here at all. Her body was more fragile, she couldn't heal like he could, he was trying to protect her secret.

The bars opened. Katsiya giggled as dark shadowy tendrils reached out. Cal grimaced, running forward but then he was smacked on the head by one, falling to his knees. "Cute girls are always the best to torment." Katsiya whispered as Ophie was dragged out into her clawed grip, nails digging into her shoulders. "Just like that girl I lived inside for so long. You remind me a little of her." Zinnia Evernight was once the host of Baroness Katsiya back when she was still Acacia. Ophie opened her mouth but then decided to stay silent. Panic was washing through her body, trauma from her human life and death was rising to the surface but she couldn't let it get control, she couldn't let her trauma control her. All strength left her knees and her legs went limp as she was dragged onto a table, her wrists and ankles both placed in vices.

There was a slam. Calciferous threw his fist on the ground. "Stop! Torture me instead, Katsiya! I'm stronger than she is, it'll be more entertaining!" She glanced at him with disinterest and turned back to Ophie, licking her cheek. "I don't know what tenth place is talking about, but third place is very strong." Ophie grit her teeth, her heart pounding, every cell in her body screaming to run away when suddenly she felt her limbs turning. The rotors were spinning, the vices rotating to make her limbs bend in horrible strange ways. Katsiya grinned as Ophie whimpered then screamed as her joints popped, her bones breaking against each other, her arms and legs both forcibly twisted backwards around. Her mind went white with nothing but pain as a knife edged whip was produced. "let's turn you into a proud chunk of meat." Ophie could barely process it as the whip slashed against her stomach, ripping her clothes, tearing at her flesh.

Baron Pierce sniffed the air, kneeling down in the dirt. "This was definitely her work," Sonata stood behind him, tense. Blithe had defeated Frey, who had given in, perhaps having realized that he could not face against a General stronger than him and a Baron on his home turf. Blithe had let him flee, which was fine by Baron Pierce, so long as he did not try to return. If he did, Baron Pierce would kill him. "Who's?" Sonata asked, tense at the disappearance of her fellow Baronlings. "Katsiya's," Pierce rose, the dirt crumbling in his fingers. "Return to the house Sonata, I want you to protect it." She nodded, "but what are you going to do?" She asked, clearly nervous at the thought of leaving him to do this on his own. Baron Pierce pat her head, "I'm going to bring Ophie and Cal home."

Finding them did not prove to be challanging, in fact, Baroness Katsiya was sloppy in her work. Even after all this time, she had yet to learn how to cover her tracks. Therefore, tracking her was easy. Defeating her Baronlings was a walk in the park, it was no wonder none of them had made it to the next round. "I would say that I'm surprised by what you've done, but to be honest Katsiya, I almost expected this. I do have to say, I'm disappointed that you've gone so far as to force my hand like this," he removed the white gloves he almost always wore and tucked them into his pocket. "The law states that theft must be dealt with by the two affected parties. As these are my Baronlings you have stolen, I will be dealing your punishment swiftly and justly."

Ophie was not looking good, Cal was in one piece. "Calciferous, take Ophie and retreat to that corner for the time being." He undid the straps as Katsiya hissed, "You ruin everything!" She lashed out, but Baron Pierce was faster. "You've always been weak," he dealt a crushing blow to her wind pipe, her head snapping back, but Acacia was crafty, such wounds did not effect her. She twisted her head back towards the right direction and hissed, "We are not weak!" She growled, attacking, slashing through Baron Pierce's robes. He stepped back quickly, not wanting to get hit by her claws. She growled fiercely, attacking in quick succession, attempting to gain the upper hand. Baron Pierce head butted her, blood stemming on her forehead. He picked up the whip she had used on Ophie, tossing it away in distaste.

"Do not touch the property of others Katsiya," he tsked, "you of all demons should know that." She hissed, attempting to release herself from the nest of plants Baron Pierce had planted her in. "Perhaps once these flowers blossom, you will have learned your lesson. Cross into my lands again and I will not be so merciful," he turned towards Cal, who was craddling Ophie. "Come, let us make haste and return home." By the time they reached the estate in Amiens, it was morning. Sonata was waiting for them, the Doctor already there. Baron Pierce cradled Ophie gently, laying her down in her bed. "I will see to her," the Doctor promised, shooing them all out. They were worried about her, of course, she had lost far too much blood and the whip had dealt damage, but to what extent, they would not know until the Doctor was done.

Alice awoke, confused when Rene did not appear. She slid out of bed, wondering where she was. By now, Rene would normally awaken her and fight her into the bath. Alice looked around, stepping into the bathroom. There was a puddle on the ground, she had never seen a red puddle before. The window was open, Rene was laying on the ground for some reason, the puddle around her. Alice held her hand, wondering what sort of game this was, but Rene did not move. Her eyes were closed, she was breathing, but it was slow, as though she were sleeping. "Rene?" Alice whispered, surprised that the word had come so easily. "Rene?" Alice asked again, prodding the maid. "Alice, come away from there!" Sonata said quickly, having come to check on them. Alice looked up, pointing down.

Sonata lifted Alice away from the blood, kneeling down to reach underneath Rene's nose. "Pierce!" Sonata called, the door bursting open. "We're too late," Baron Pierce whispered, "there is nothing I can do for a wound of this caliber," it was clear that this was no accident, the open window, the blood, someone had left Rene here for them to find. "Take Alice out of here please," he said softly. "There's one thing you can do," Sonata said as she wrestled Alice, attempting to lift her up. "You're a Baron, you can... you can save her!" Baron Pierce looked away, as though the thought pained him. "Rene is too important to just let die!" Sonata yelled, managing to gather the little rascal into her arms at last. His hands griped the side of the tub so tightly that it began to crack beneath the weight of them.

"Please take Alice away," he quietly begged. Sonata nodded, leaving him in the bathroom. She would not protest any longer, knowing that it was only he who could make the decision. "Come on Alice, we'll take a bath in my room today. How does that sound?"

"What happened to Rene?" Alice wanted to know, Sonata so surprised she nearly dropped the child. "You spoke! You spoke, like, a whole sentence!" Alice blanched, was it bad? "No, no, it's a good thing. You did a good thing," Sonata placed her down. "Rene is... taking a nap, that's all. Don't worry, Baron Pierce will make everything better, he always does."

[size=105]Ophie was not a demon, so she couldn't exactly heal herself properly the way most demons could. For example, even if Sonata had her head cut off due to her ridiculous healing ratio she could heal it back up before her body registered itself as dead. You could rip her legs off and in a few minutes her legs would be back. Only by burning her alive or poisoning her from the inside would you ever be able to kill someone able to heal as quickly as Sonata could. "Let's get you home." Cal said, lifting Ophie up and holding her close to his chest. Her body was steaming from the damage, but Calciferus covered her with a blanket and helped her onto the flying carriage.

"That's pretty bad. You're lucky we were testing a new carriage out." Vaswald said seriously to Pierce, shaking her head. "Katsiya's quite a foolish Baron for trying something like that." Baron Pierce nodded, pain in his eyes as Cal was no doubt debating wrenching Ophie's limbs back in place. If she were a demon that would be an easy fix, but she was an angel so he had no idea how to approach it. "Do you want my medical engineers to look at her?" Vaswald asked, picking up her holo. No doubt she would be able to do something about the problem at least. "Right now I just want to get back home. If our doctor can't figure something out, we'll contact you again." Pierce was able to get to Moscow with help from Vaswald who was flying her flying carriages around Europe. With that, they made quick haste back to Northern France's borders.

When arriving back at the Castle there was another emergency. Rene was found mortally wounded, she was barely able to move in the puddle of red she laid in. No one wanted her to die, she was a valuable member of their little family in Paris. While Julian looked over Ophie and struggled to think of how to set her limbs back correctly, Vaswald knelt down to put her hands over Rene's body. "We can help her." The icy Baroness said, glancing over at Pierce's distressed face. "But I'll have to encase her in ice. Do I have permission?" Because Rene belonged to Pierce, Vaswald couldn't freeze her until she was given permission to do so. "Please." He said, his voice soft. "If you think you can save her." Vaswald nodded, her one blue wing shining as Rene was frozen alive, trapped in an ice block to be preserved. "Help me carry her to the carriage."

"Is it time to go home yet?" Shiro asked, poking her head out as Vaswald and Pierce carried the frozen Rene into the flying carriage. "Yes, we're returning for now. This is Rene, one of Pierce's human servants. She was attacked, so we're going to fix her up and bring her back here once she's well." Shiro nodded. As the Head Nurse of Berlin, she was an expert at bed care. "There's been quite a lot of suspicious activity around lately. How are the security cameras going?" Pierce asked. One of his many calls was to Vaswald of course, he wanted security cameras installed around his estate in case of an emergency like this. "I'll fly them over once Rene's ready to come back." Vaswald said with a little smile. "So don't forget to pay me once your order's complete."

They had to be quiet, Sonata told Alice. Doctor Julian needed to focus on fixing Ophie, there could not be any disturbances. Alice did not understand, but she put a finger up to her lip to show Sonata she was listening. "Yes, good," Baron Pierce stood on the doorstep, watching the carriage fly away with Rene in it. He walked the perimeter of the house, still wearing her blood, looking up at the window the assailant had gone through. Had they meant to target Rene? Was this a message? Or perhaps their target was someone else? No one knew Ophie was an angel, except for the few that Ophie had confessed this to. As far as Baron Pierce knew, no one was aware of Baroness Nova's presence either, her aura masked by the barriers surrounding his home. Was their target Alice, then?

Sonata was waiting with her in his office. Cal was with Julian while he fixed up Ophie, or at least, attempted to. Baron Pierce had changed clothing and washed the blood from his hands. "We thought we would have breakfast in here today, since it's just the three of us." Sonata said, taking a seat. "My, what a nice surprise." He wore a mask of calm despite his worry. Alice held out a strawberry and Pierce took it, taking a seat in his chair. "Thank you Alice," he mused her hair, leaning back. "Is Rene okay?" He jumped, glancing at Alice as though she had two heads. "Will Rene be okay?" Alice repeated, question in her eyes. "Could you speak this entire time?" He questioned, leaning forward. Alice picked up a piece of bacon, not answering the question.

"She asked me the same thing this morning," Sonata said when Baron Pierce looked at her. "I don't know if it's that one phrase, or if Zinnia did something when we weren't here." Sonata fell silent and picked up a slice of toast, breakfast was simple today, but it was good, the ingredients fresh. Baron Pierce leaned back, contemplating as he ate. "Alice, can you tell me what you remember? Before I bought you?" Alice looked up at the ceiling, swinging her legs, she placed Dog on her lap, thinking. "Monaka," her voice was soft as she stroked Dog's fur. "Who is Monaka?" Sonata sat on the edge of her seat, this was the most Alice had spoken since Baron Pierce had brought her home. "I don't know," she reached for a strawberry, examining it in the light.

"My sister I think. The demons hurt her," she winced, touching her back. Oracles were not human, demon, or mage. It was speculated that they were closer to the fey, but they could be born into any species. "Is she still alive?" Baron Pierce pushed, Alice placing the strawberry back on the plate. "She was bleeding a lot, like Rene did. I tried to hold onto her, but they took me away."

"Who did?"

"The demons. They made me stand on a stage with a lot of other people, but no one ever bought me. I'm not smart, like the other humans. Or pretty and I don't have any special talents. I wouldn't talk to them, I forgot how to..." she trailed off. Sonata swallowed hard, the trade of human pets was a lucrative one, but the various breeders kept their humans in horrible conditions. The less valuable the human, the less accomdations they received. Ones trained or bred with special features would get three hot meals a day and sleep in a bed in their own rooms. Ones like Alice, deemed worthless, were kept in cages and were lucky if they received a meal three times a week. "And you've been there this entire time?" Baron Pierce prodded gently. Alice shook her head, hugging Dog closer.

"There was a group of demon researchers, they bought me because they didn't think I would last much longer." She looked up at the ceiling again, remembering. "It was the first time I slept in a bed and I was really happy, I had my own room, and I got food if I was good." Sonata looked like she wanted to throw up at the joy Alice expressed at receiving basic things like food and a bed. "What was the research for?" Pierce continued to prod, he needed to understand, he needed to know who else was aware of Alice's lineage. "Patterns, I was good at it. They made me pick patterns or go through mazes, and solve puzzles. I would see things though and they didn't like that, ever since Monaka died... I could see them." They wanted to know about the shadows, but Alice didn't want to tell them.

"What happened when the project ended?" Sonata asked, her tone tinged with a shade of fear. "They gave me food that made me sleepy. When I woke up, everyone else was asleep too. One of the researchers noticed I woke up, so they sent me back to the farm. I was there for a long time again and I thought I was gonna die too, because everyone kept saying I was." They would give Alice less each day, less water, less food, she wasn't going to last much longer. "And then you came and I was happy, because I got to sleep in a bed again." Sonata burst into tears, Alice didn't know why though. The demon stumbled forward, hugging the tiny human tightly. Baron Pierce looked deeply disturbed by everything Alice had told him.

There was a knock at the door, Baron Pierce rose, one of the other human servants bringing in the mail. "Thank you," he went to his seat, noticing the large envelope and the wax seal. "It seems we'll be receiving visitors within the next few days. Baron King Messiah and Baroness Anguis will be coming for a visit."

A misty shadow pushed the sealed envelope through the door and sighed, turning away. "I guess I should go back then." Rainarch stared behind her, spitting at the snake eyeing her. She drew her claw, slashing it's throat, and seeped back into the shadows as if she had never been there at all. So many spiders, Zinnia was right. Echo and Blithe needed to get out of there right away, Anguis already had her eyes all over the Palace. "I gotta get back." The three beasts of Teranos were plotting something of course. The outlaw demons, the ones that did not live in Hell and did not follow the laws of Hell were beginning to surge. While Rain spent much of her time as a messenger for Zinnia and Blithe since it was very easy for her to sneak in and out and around unseen, she had another important job to do, of course.

She reppeared on the other side in a dark foggy cobblestone road. The fires of Hell could be heard behind her but Rainarch didn't care. "Sister!" A dog jumped at her and sniffed her many times before licking her cheek. "Brother!" Rainarch giggled, accepting the hug as she was pounced by her second brother. Zuroarch pat her down and then nodded, satisfied, turning back into his humanoid form, mist coming off the edges. Zuroarch was the Relentless, the hound that would chase his prey until the end of the world. Rain had a special title of course too, as one of the three Beasts of Teranos. She was the Ravenous, the hungriest of the beasts. "How's big brother?" They had a shared elder brother of course, who was their leader. "He's good! We're getting out plan ready!" Rain turned into a bat and spread her wings, flying back through the fog of Teranos. Zeroarch's tail was thumping happily as his paws sounded against the ground, hie eyes glowing bred.

A large red dragon descended upon them, roaring with might. This was their elder brother, Gaerarch the Vanquisher, who would defeat all of the foes standing in his way, a dragon both wise and mighty. "You returned. Have you finished your business?" The minor demons scattered, both afraid and respecting the beasts as they passed through to wait for more victims. "Yes! The wild feels nice. I missed being home." Rainarch grinned, wiggling her bat wings as her brothers fawned around her. "There's going to be a big event soon, so we need to be ready for it. In five months, Baron King Messiah's gonna be very busy." The outlaw demons all remembered being cast out of Hell by King Lucifer, by King Satan, even by Baron King Messiah. They were outlawed and exiled, forced to live in the whirling fog of the wild outside of Hell.

They weren't going to just stay down though. Be the change you want to be, be brave against all odds. "We're gonna show Messiah why he exiled us!" Rain giggled, flying to her bed of human skulls, a reminder of her past before she met Yue Eldriss. "Probably everyone's planning to act during the Baron Exams." Gaerarch said, judging his sister as she playfully juggled human skulls from her bed. "The ex-Generals probably have a big terrorist act prepared too." Zeroarch grinned, his tail swishing back and forth. "The thestrals are excited." The dog said cheerfully. "Tell Zinnia to stop banishing them, sister, they don't like being forced back here." Thestrals were beasts of death, shadows native to the fog of Teranos. They liked to cling to the living beyond the wildlands here, but they always did return here eventually. "Don't get too friendly with your old friends up there. You're one of us before you're one of them." Gaerarch reminded his sister with a sigh. He noticed her loneliness after all.

"I know." Rain said softly. "I'm not like I was back then." While she pretended to be just as friendly and cuddly as always, her brothers made sure she didn't forget her true self. It was nice to get to forget about it, but there was no running away from destiny. "Whatever happens, you two are my family." It would be best if she thought of those happy days in Constantina as nothing more but a distant dream.

They needed to prepare for the visit, but with Rene gone, it was going to be harder to coordinate the house. Baron Pierce called a meeting for the household. Julian was still working upstairs on Ophie, he did not know how much longer it was going to be. Sonata was holding Alice, Blithe had joined them downstairs. "Within the next few days, Baron King Messiah will be coming to stay for a week with Baroness Anguis. They want us to show them a good time in Amiens, but the house will need to run smoothly and with Rene currently in hospital, I'm appointing Zeke in charge." Zeke stood up a bit straighter, he was Rene's second, a good boy, one Baron Pierce had employed after finding him picking through the waste in a sewer off the coast of Bruggs.

"Yes Sir!" He piped, clearly pleased to be in charge of something at last. "I'll fix the guest corridors so that they are spotless." Zeke saluted, Baron Pierce nodding. "For the time being, Blithe, we will move you and Nova outside of Amiens. There is a cabin you both can stay in until the visit is over." Blithe nodded, clearly unhappy at this sudden turn of events, but she would move Echo and they would get on with it until the week passed. "How long do we have?" Blithe asked softly. "Two days before they arrived. I suggest you leave tonight in order to give yourself time to adjust." Blithe nodded, the staff all knew that Echo's being there was secret and that should any of them speak of it, they would be in risk of something worse than losing their job. Baron Pierce ran a tight ship, after all.

"I'll be arranging a tour of the country side, I'd like the orchards to be pruned and in their prime." It was spring after all, everything was in full flourish. "You are all dismissed," they scattered, going about their tasks and beginning the preparations. "I'm going to take Echo now, I don't know if it will be smart for us to return right away, but we will be back." Blithe disappeared shortly after. "There's no way to refuse the invitation, is there?" Sonata asked nervously. Alice placed a sticker on her cheek, Sonata wrinkling her nose. "Silly," she placed Alice down, the human almost immediately ran to the bookcase. "Nooo, not today. Come on, let's go make a card for Ophie," she took Alice's hand, leading her away so that they would not disturb the humans that were working. "Why do you like to climb the bookcase?" Sonata asked, now that she could get a proper answer.

Alice shrugged in answer, it seemed that even though she could speak, she was not going to. They sat in Baron Pierce's office, Pierce himself overseeing the preparations and waiting for an update from Julian. Alice made three cards for Ophie and one for their guests, which Sonata suggested she do. Alice was growing bored of coloring, she wanted to go outside and play in the garden, but Sonata was under instructions to keep her inside and away from trouble.

Senna Illuvia sat at the hearth, knitting gently something in her hands. Ophie walked over to her, attracted by the warmth of the fire as it burned bright. She laid down in front of her mother, her hand roaming up to touch her mother's belly. "What do you feel?" Senna asked with a warm inviting tone. "About getting a younger brother?" Her stomach was all swollen up and every day they got closer to the birthing. "Scared." Ophie said, her tails hidden shamefully in her clothes. "And nervous? I hope he doesn't end up like me." That was the last thing she wanted for her eventual little brother. "I hope he... had an easy human death... so he won't end up mutated and disgusting like me." She was disgusting, but at least maybe her brother could be beautiful.

A tuft of white hair filled Ophie's vision and she stared at it with a strange feeling in her chest. She wasn't sure what exactly was going on, but the white hair was familiar to her and it warmed her heart, soothing and comforting. A white facial scar burned bright in her vision. "L-Laer-tes?" Why was her brother here? Wasn't he supposed to be in Paris, working as a servant for Baron King Messiah? "Yes, it's me. I came when I felt the connection get weak." Because they were siblings, they cast magic on each other before parting ways. If one would end up in mortal danger, the other would always know and be able to rush to their side. "What were you thinking, getting kidnapped by a Baroness? That has nothing to do with the plan!"

Ophie gulped, her heart burning. "I didn't... mean to." Laertes grinned and shook his head, his mutation mild and nowhere near as awful as Ophie's twin tails. "You let yourself get kidnapped without meaning to? How sloppy can you be?" His berating was painful, almost as bad as having her limbs broken and turned backwards. "You look.... tired..." Laertes growled, his wings puffing up. "I had to fly all the way to Moscow, and then all the way to Amiens when I felt it! You really did get careless!" At least he looked healthy and well despite the exhaustion of flying too far. "How did... you get here?"

"Baron Pierce let me in when I introduced myself as your brother." Laertes explained with a slight growl in his voice. "I wanted to make sure they understood how to care for you, since angels and demons have different health care. Then imagine my surprise that everyone in this castle already knows the truth about you!" He put a hand on his hip and rolled his eyes. "What were you thinking sis? Didn't you want to return home together with me?" There were three cards in her room, and Ophie hadn't had a chance to read them over yet. As this was happening Julian was filling in Baron Pierce about Ophie's state. He set her limbs back properly while she was asleep and patched up the wounds across her stomach with sutures that would help her heal from the whip's lashes. Once most of the internal damage has healed Ophie should be able to use healing magic to fix up the rest, he informed Baron Pierce.

Baron Pierce was glad to hear that Ophie would be alright. He did not think he could suffer two devestating blows in one day. He did not know the state of Rene either, all he knew was that Vaswald would contact him when she saw fit. Ophie, at least, would be relatively okay. Her brother had come too, to ensure her survival. Alice and Sonata had been upstairs when he arrived, making cards for Ophie. Cal was sitting in his room, contemplating his usefulness. He had been unable to protect anyone, he was still weak. Baron Pierce could practically sense his thoughts from here. "Alice no!" He could hear the patter of little feet, no doubt she had pulled off her shoes. "No, we don't slide down the banister!" It was too late, he could see her sliding down, Sonata scrambling to catch her.

She landed on her feet, running towards him, Sonata breathless. "What have you two been up to?" Baron Pierce inquired as Alice nearly ran into his legs, clinging to his robes. "Alice has been busy running away and I've been trying to catch her. I just wanted her to wear the cute dresses I bought! But she-well, she's more interested in trying to escape." Alice wasn't trying to escape, she merely wasn't interested in getting all dressed up now. "Perhaps you should ask Alice what she wants to do?" Baron Pierce suggested, patting her head. Alice looked around, realizing that she wasn't holding Dog. "Dog is missing," she wasn't panicked, rather she was calm. Emotions were still something she was trying to learn.

"Then let's go look for him," Baron Pierce suggested. "Sonata, why don't you go check on Ophie and see if she and her brother will be joining us for dinner?" Sonata nodded, going up the staircase. "Come Alice, let us go look for Dog." Baron Pierce offered a hand, Alice taking it and following him. They searched the living room first, Alice climbing the shelves to see if she had left him on top of the bookcase. "Silly girl, why do you prefer it up there?" He inquired, not expecting her to answer. "It reminds me of something, but I don't remember what." She replied, near silent. Baron Pierce reached up, retrieving her from the top shelf. "Come, let us go inspect the office." They went upstairs, but Dog was not in the office or in her bedroom.

"Hmm, I don't think you left the house today and you had him this morning," he drummed his fingers on his chin. Alice had flopped onto the carpet, laying down in defeat. "It will be alright, we'll find him." And if not, he would merely order a new Dog and pass it off as the same one. "He's gone forever," Alice sat up, suddenly freezing. "What is it? What's wrong?" She clutched her head, images flashing before her eyes. These were not things she had seen before, Alice had no idea what these were, but they were not her memories.

Two people, holding hands on a bridge. A girl standing tall, a dripping head in her hands. Two roads, someone standing in the center of them.

Someone was shaking her, Alice blinking trying to clear her vision, trying to make the images go away. "Alice? What is it? What's wrong?" Baron Pierce wanted to know. She looked up at him, the visions disappearing as soon as they come. "They weren't... those weren't... those aren't my memories. I don't know what they are."

"I think the disappearance of Dog may have activated your powers."

Unfortunately for Ophie, neither she nor Laertes specialized in healing magic. They weren't like the priests or priestesses in the temples dedicated to the One God that dedicated their lives to restoration magic. Sure, both Ophie and Laertes could heal small wounds and close up open lacerations, something like a broken bone was beyond their capabilities. "You really are sloppy." Laertes said with a sigh, shaking his head. "Aren't we supposed to be Queen Celty's beloved and trusted Angel Knights?" Ophie raised an eyebrow, wondering what he was getting at. "I was an Angel Knight before you." Her tails were stiff. The way he stared at them made her feel ashamed. She was a disgusting mutant, what kind of angel had twin tails all grotesque like that anyways?

"Oh well. It's better like this anyways. You can just sit in bed all useless and I'll finish the mission for the both of us." Laertes cackled to himself, a smug look coming to his face. "Then Celty will congratulate me and be so proud of me! I'll get promoted above you, and there's nothing you can do about this!" Ophie hissed, trying to move against Julian's advice. She could feel her bones creaking as she tried, even though there was an itch on her nose she couldn't reach. Her younger brother was eager for glory. If he wasn't leashed, he would get himself into trouble and get found out before he had a chance to finish Messiah off. Could Ophie convince him not to? She wanted to be the one to bring home Messiah's head! She was the big sister after all, wasn't she?

With a groan Ophie shifted her weight in her bed, scrunching up her nose to try to deal with the itch. "Oh yeah? How are you going to do it?" Laertes grinned, a faint blush coming to his face. "Oh, you want to know? Well, I suppose I can tell you. I'll poison his food a little every day until he dies, of course!" So he wasn't going to simply try to remove his head in combat? "Is that why... you became a servant in the Eiffel Tower?" Ophie asked, surprised. Laertes nodded as if she was an idiot. "Why else would I join as a servant?" He sounded perplexed. "You really are slow on the uptake, sis."

This wasn't right. Ophie was never going to live it down from him if he was the one who finished the mission. If Ophie killed Messiah, she would definitely get to enjoy all the bragging rights. "Thanks for coming. You should head back now though." A servant missing for so long would be suspicious. "Don't worry, you can have glory too. You've noticed that little kid, right?" She was an Oracle, Ophie knew it too though it took her longer to realize it. The truth was, Gabriel did not like the idea of humans having access to Oracles, it was a power too much for them. For a demon to have an Oracle was even more disastrous. Anyone who could bring an Oracle to Heaven would be rewarded greatly. "Just kidnap her to Heaven once we're done with Messiah." Laertes said with a grin as he turn away. "I'm sure it'll be easy. It's not like you're actually friends with any filthy demons here." His beautiful wings beat as he left through the window, Ophie gritting her teeth, cursing her idiocy.
