"Are you sure you want that one? No one wants that one." The chains were too heavy for her arms, she could not move with the constraints placed on her body. That was how the demons wanted it though. "I'll give you a discount, since I don't think this one is long for this world." The door to the cage opened, the child shrinking back instinctively. "I'll call you... Alice," she looked down from the lights in the ceiling, that no longer looked like stars. "Yes, there's curiosity in those eyes." His smile was like the sun, far too bright to look at. A hand came closer, resting atop her head. The weight was familiar, somehow, comforting. She coughed, her blood spattering his nice sleeve. "Now, now, we'll get you all fixed up, just you wait." Her legs were too weak to hold her weight, he lifted her up and the chains fell away.

He was gentle in a way she had never known. He wrapped her in a blanket and carried her out, the sky a color she had not known possible. It was bright, so bright she had to look away. There were clouds and birds, grass, and trees. She could not recall all of these things the last time she had glimpsed the outside world. Despite how bright it was, she was still so cold. "So small," he placed her in a moving machine, the kind that had taken her away from Monaka. She looked outside as they moved, the landscape changing. "Alice," he said and she turned, somehow knowing that, that was her name. Alice, it felt strange. Not kid, not human, Alice. Her chest felt warm and she could feel it in her cheeks, she coughed, blood dribbling down her chin. "I'm Baron Pierce," he reached out to hold her hand. They had called her dumb and deaf, because she did not speak well, but no one had ever needed her words.

"You're a very important little thing, aren't you?" No one had ever called her important before. She blinked, coughing dumbly once more. "You're going to live with me from now on, I'll take care of you. Okay?" She nodded and he reached over with a cloth napkin to wipe the blood from her chin. He was the sun, brighter than any star. No, the sun went away at night. He was the moon, a gentle light that illuminated everything it touched. Alice fell forward, he caught her, steadying her. "Looks like we're here," he lifted her from her seat and walked through a busy square. "Point to anything you want and it's yours," they went into the biggest building Alice had ever seen. She did not know what she wanted, she did not want anything. There were too many sounds and smells, too many bright colors. Then there was something soft, she reached for it and Pierce placed it in her arms. "That is called a dog," a dog. "Dog," she mumbled slowly, hugging it.

They bought things Alice could not describe, colorful things, soft things, things she could not put words to. They went back to the moving box again after. He reached over with his cloth napkin, soiling it with her red blood. "I'll ring for a doctor as soon as we get there." Alice shook her head, she knew that word, she did not like that word. "Don't worry, I promise this one won't hurt you, no one will ever hurt you again." She smiled because she knew it wasn't true, because she was a human and he was a demon. They stopped in front of the biggest house Alice had ever seen. "Welcome to your new home," Baron Pierce lifted her, carrying her through the heavy looking doors. "I'm back!" He called inside, what first seemed like an empty house slowly coming to life. "Oh, what's that?" The first head peeked out. A body came into view, his hair black and his eyes blue. He was a demon. "Calcifer, come meet Alice."

"Alice? Like from the storybooks?" He laughed, but came closer, examining her. "Where's all that blood coming from?" He asked, his smile turning into a frown of concern. "She needs a bit of fixing, but I think she'll fit right in. Where are the others?" They came, demons, several of them. Some were girls, some were boys. There were house humans as well, she noticed. "It's about time you found yourself a pet!" One of them bellowed, laughing. Alice winced, hiding in Pierce's coat. "Let's get you fed and I'll have one of the girls help you take a bath?" They went to a dining room with a large table and mismatched dining sets, the chairs all different heights and sizes.

All demons were the same. Ophelia sniffed the air, hating the stink of it. Earth was a cesspool where smelly humans and smelly demons gathered. She was an angel, so she deserved better than to have to exist in this kind of place. "Filthy." The angel wiped her hand on her cloak, feeling disgusted that she had touched a doorknob. "Sorry, cloak, I dirtied you." Heaven smelled so much nicer than this, so why did she deserve to wander the stinky city of stinky Paris anyways? Baron Eudaikos running around with his sister Polaire, pretending to fight for justice. Baroness Elimine brewing tea that was no doubt poison for her human slaves that knew no better. Baroness Amica, forcing slumber parties on her human slaves, acting like an innocent white cat when there was clearly evil in her eyes. All demons were the same and that was that.

"Why did Pierce even send me to spy on them anyways." She even had to go into Vienna and watch as Baroness Anguis tore a virgin girl in half with her snakes. What kind of fun time was that anyways? "You don't want to join, Ophie?" Anguis asked, pointing a snake at her invitingly. "Come on, it'll be fun. It's part of your training, isn't it?" Thankfully Queen Celeste had taught her and Laertes magic to make them smell like demons to other demons so no one would know the difference. Ophelia was masquerading as a demon by the name of Ophie (real creative, right?) and she found residence under Baron Pierce's home, under the guise of wanting training to become a Baron. She was competing against a demon named Calciferous Graves, and Sonata King, two candidates being trained by Pierce with hopes of becoming Barons, both with their own goals and ambitions.

Baron Pierce's castle was somewhere just outside of Paris. It was rustic, made of stone and kept well cleaned by the human pets he dressed up in maid clothes. They, just as trained, bowed to Ophie as she walked in. "Welcome back, Baronling Ophie." They said, their voices in unison. "Where's Pierce?" Ophie decided to not look at them, she could hardly stand to look at such pathetic creatures. "He should be with the new pet right now." The dark haired maid pointed in a direction so Ophie continued that way. She happened upon a new human pet with stark blonde hair. Baron Pierce was talking about getting her fed as he hid her in his coat? She stunk too, just like all humans and demons did down here.

"Ah, perfect timing, Ophie. Do you mind giving this girl a bath?" Ophie blinked. "Wait, but what about my report on Baroness Anguis?" Wasn't that why he sent her out to investigate her? "That can wait. This poor child needs a bath. Her name is Alice." Ophie made a face, it was clear she did not appreciate having this sort of task dumped on her. "If it's part of my training, then I guess I have no choice." She rolled her eyes. "Why not make Sonata do it?" Pierce smiled at her. "Sonata's practicing her singing right now, I don't want to interrupt." She was trying to take after her long lost aunt, Melody King, who supposedly fell during the battle of London many years ago. Even now Ophie could hear that annoying pleasant singing.

The bath was nice and steamy to the perfect temperature, even given a nice scent thanks to the Parisian bath oils that the demons continued to extract from the plants around. "There, get in." The silver haired angel was somewhat forced to carry the stinky human to the bathroom for cleansing. "Don't tell me you need my help scrubbing you and stuff." Surely that much was easy enough for a human to do, right? "We're almost the same height, and I can already clean myself." She grinned arrogantly, as if that was some sort of accomplishment.

She had taken a few bites, the food flavorful, too flavorful. She was used to the gruel that was force fed to all of the humans. Flavorless and gray, but this was spiced and salty and sweet. "Is it not to your liking?" She shook her head, it was good, but too much, too fast. "Oh good, Ophie has returned." Baron Pierce rose to greet her, "welcome back," his smile was gentle, Alice could not help but stare. The little human turned back towards the table, afraid of getting caught. Her entire body shook at the thought of being punished. There were laws, supposedly, to keep humans from being abused, but most disregarded them and it was rarely enforced. "I certainly cannot bathe her, as she's a girl and you're a girl, so it's perfect." Bathe? Alice was not familiar with that word. She was lifted off of the seat and carried up the stairs, to a strange room that was far too clean.

There were loud sounds that scared her, she tired to hide but there was nowhere to go. This demon seemed angry, Alice did not know why. She blinked dumbly when she gestured to get in. She struggled to remove the shirt that was far too big. It was obvious then, just how small she was. You could count each rib and notch in the spine, her legs were like spindely sticks that trembled as though she were a doe as she attempted to get into the tub, blood dripping between her lips from the effort. The water was warm and soapy, it was like being hugged. Alice liked the feeling, even as the water began to turn gray from the years of accumulated dirt. In that place, when they wanted to wash the humans, it was a hose with cold water. "Sc-scru-b-b?" She stuttered, wondering what that meant.

The demon did not seem happy with Alice, as though she did not want to be there. The little human turned to look out the window, it was easier to move in the water. Her hair swished around her, it felt heavy when wet. With her back exposed, there were two obvious scars near the shoulder blades, scars any angel might be familiar with. Alice turned back to look at the demon, pointing out the window. There was something there, a creature, grazing in the field. It was black and white, with a long tail that swatted at something. "Wh-what... that?" Alice wanted to know, turning back to look at the angry demon. "W-what... this?" She reached for a pink square that smelled like flowers, she held it out to the demon, wondering if she would tell her.

"Nam-name is...is... Ali-Alice," it was clear that speaking was something Alice was not used to. Her tongue felt heavy and awkward, it was something she had not had to do in a very long time. Still, it was there, to be used. Her head hurt form the effort of having to think of words. Could she befriend the angry demon? Alice hoped so. She liked the nice demons more, she liked Pierce. He made her feel safe, he was warm. She thought of Monaka, she wondered if her sister was somewhere safe, living in a house, eating sweets and hugging toy dogs. She had never seen Monaka die, but she could still recall the blood that had blossomed on her chest as she fell, she could starkly recall it staining her hands and clothing. Everything washed away in the bath, especially the heaviness she had carried for so long. For the first time since that day, Alice felt safe.

|| Countdown to X-Day || Sound Holic ||

Ophelia Illuvia was a daughter of Purifiers, she was an angel knight who trained personally under Queen Celeste Angeal and stood at her side when Queen Kitra's head was delivered to her doorstep. She was one of the highest ranking angel knights in Heaven now, even with her mutation she now displayed in full sight since it helps her blend in better with demons. So why was an angel like her forced to take care of this stinky smelly human? Her tails coiled around each other in tension as she took the stinky human to the bathroom, filling up the tub with lukewarm water proper for someone to bathe in. Like most humans now, the stinky human was emaciated under her clothing. It really was pitiful. If they didn't want to become like this they should have fought better against the demons 200 years ago.

"It means rubbing this on you to clean you." It seems this one didn't even receive an education, let alone anything else. She felt sickened as she helped the stinky human into the tub, into the water. Having to tocuh that kind of grime with her hands was not an experience Ophie wanted to do again. She peered out the window to spy a black and white cat prowling around as if it were a master of it's domain. "It's a monster, it'll eat bad little humans if you don't be good." Ophie lied with ease, smirking with a tiny bit of pleasure twinging in her chest. "This is soap. It cleans you." She rubbed the bar onto the stinky human's arm to show her how it was done.

The stinky human decided it wanted to tell Ophie her name, using very broken and not eloquent speech. "My name is Ophie. I'm a Baron Candidate." She was in direct competition with Calciferous Graves and Sonata Delanore for the position. Even the water was becoming filthy, so Ophie unplugged the drain and kept the water running to replenish the dirty water with clean water. It was a process and she could feel her arms rotting with the stink of human filth just by touching the water. "You better get clean before the monster attacks." Ophie warned her. "The monster likes to go after stinky humans." This kid probably didn't even know what it meant to be clean, considering her looks.

Once Alice was as close to clean as possible, Ophie handed her the new clothes Baron Pierce wanted her to wear, a simple smock of a dress. "Does the human know how to put this on?" Even Ophie knew how to put on a dress! She handed it to Alice with a sigh. "Follow me. Pierce probably wants to do something with you." Baron Pierce acted nice and was always treating his humans well. What motive did he have? All demons were evil, so not even Pierce was an exception to the rule. Ophie was an angel, so she knew these things.

Monster? Alice looked at it again, it did not look like a monster. Still, it could eat her. Alice looked away from the window, afraid. Monsters were bad, something every human knew about. Monaka once told her a story of a monster with no face, the one that had hurt the humans so badly that they had to run and hide in caves. He was an ugly monster with a black heart and he had an army of others that would hurt the humans. That was why they had to live there, where no monsters could find them. Of course, the monsters had found them, they had come for them, just as Monaka said they would. It wasn't Alice's fault, she knew, but she could not help but feel she had abandoned her sister there to die. Sometimes Alice still saw her in the corner of her eye, walking down the hallway, humming the song she had sung to the sky before bed. Alice could never reach her though, no matter how fast she chased her shadow.

She had to rub this pink bar against her? Slice did so slowly, it was slippery and fell into the water. It seemed Ophie was growing frustrated, as she took over, then changed the water so that it was no longer gray, but white. It was warm, so warm. Alice liked it, she decided, she enjoyed the feeling of it wrapping around her. She wanted another bath, but as the water went down the drain for the last time, it seemed that the bath was over. Something fluffy came next, a piece of cloth that made the water go away. They had never had these in that place, usually Alice shivered until she was dry. She knew how to put a dress on, of course, that much Alice was aware of. The cloth slid over her head, far too large for her. It tied at the back to make it fit a bit better. Ophie told Alice to follow her, she sighed as she spoke. Alice swallowed hard, usually a sigh came with nothing good. It meant that Alice did the wrong thing. She trembled as she tried to stand, her legs unable to carry her.

A knock at the door of the sparkly room sounded. "Oh good, you're done," he poked his head inside. Alice lit up at the sight of him, he was carrying dog, the soft toy they had gotten in the busy house. He picked Alice up, handing her the toy. "Dog," she held it against her excitedly, rubbing the soft fur against her face. "Thank you Ophie for doing this. If you'd like to join them, Calciferous and Sonata are downstairs in the sparring room for training." His hair was long and green, it had flowers growing in it, Alice realized. He carried her to a new room, this one large. "You'll be staying here, with me, until I can make the proper appointments for you." His hand pat her head, she liked that feeling. He reached into his pocket, taking out what Alice thought was a necklace. He put it around her, "I had this made on our way here, it was just delivered." Demons were efficient creatures.

It had blue and had a red heart dangling on the end, a jewel pendant engraved with words she could not read. My name is Alice, I do not speak. I belong to Baron Pierce, if I am lost, please return me. "Tomorrow I will show you the whole house, but for now, I think, you might be very tired." She looked at the bowl behind him, full of round things and pointed to it. "Those are apples, would you like one?" Alice nodded. He picked up a shiny red one and wiped it against his robes, holding it out to her. She took it in both hands, it was precious, she thought, to be such a beautiful color. "You eat them," he explained, sitting beside her on the bed. Eat them? Alice bit into it, juice dribbling down her chin. "Do you like it?" He asked and she nodded. "Like... like a l-lot!" Alice decided, taking another bite. She coughed, blood flecking the pretty fruit. He wiped it away with his cloth napkin, a knock sounding at the door.

"Sir, it's me?" Said a voice from the other side, "Ah, Rene, I was expecting you. Come in," a girl with the most beautiful skin Alice had ever seen entered. She was a human, Alice could tell, because she did not have pointed ears or a tail. Coming in behind her was a man with tusks and horns, a demon. "Doctor, it's good to see you." Baron Pierce rose to greet him, the demon bowing. "I heard one of your's was injured?" Pierce nodded, the two shaking hands. He gestured to the bed where Alice was sitting, swinging her legs. "Oh-oh my, alright, let me see what can be done." Alice knew what Doctors were, there were several where she had lived in the puzzle house. They would come everyday to measure her and watch her. She followed his instructions, breathing when he wanted her to, sticking out her tongue, and trying not to flinch when he shone lights in her eyes.

Rene, the girl with the beautiful skin and purple hair, watched curiously. "I'm quite surprised she's as aware as she is, all things considering." The demon Doctor cleared his throat, sitting upright. "I fear most of this is from starvation, her body has eaten its fat reserves and is attacking her organs. It also sounds as though she's got pneumonia and several broken ribs," which explained the blood. "What can we do?" Baron Pierce asked, concern laced in his voice. Alice wasn't scared, she finished eating her apple and was quite full. "Food, quite frankly, and a good bit of rest." He gave her a purple candy and pat her head. Alice put it in her mouth, it felt as though it was popping on her tongue, she rather liked it, she decided. "Regarding her scent..." the Doctor trailed off, then shook his head, "Nevermind, it is not of importance. For now, rest and food. Stick to soft things, I suppose, until she begins to gain, then spoil her rotten, like you do with the others." Rene laughed at that, it was true, Baron Pierce's servants and Baronlings were all spoiled rotten compared to other humans.

"Thank you Doctor," the candy was making Alice begin to feel sleepy and warm. She lay her head down on Baron Pierce's lap, feeling safe beside him. He tucked her into the bed and left to oversee the training of his Baronlings, he needed to watch them progress, of course.

So why did a stinky human have those scars on her back anyways? Not that Ophie particularly tried to look but she noticed it for a brief second while the child was getting dressed again after wrapping her body up with a fluffy towel made to be extra soft for sensitive human flesh. Almost like the scars of angel wings being removed, that's what they reminded Ophie of. She would have to explore this line of thought later though, she was busy for now. If she could receive the promotion to Baron, that would buy her a perfect opportunity to assassinate Demon King Baron Messiah. She just needed to beat out Calciferous Graves and Sonata Delanore, both of whom had their own reasons for wanting the promotion. "Have fun with your new kid." Ophie stuck her tongue out at Baron Pierce, supposing the child should just be happy she didn't end up on Anguis's serpentine clutches.

Down in the sparring room a dark haired boy with lightning powers and a gentle blonde girl with the power to change her size were waiting for her. "Ah, there you are." Calciferous Graves grinned his fanged grin, almost leaping on her as if she were a sofa. "You finally made it!" Sonata smiled, sitting down on the bench on the side of the room. "You took a while bathing the child." Sonata Delanore gave her a little wave. "She was really grimy. Probably wasn't cleaned for years." It almost made Ophie want to vomit really, there was a limit to what someone like her could withstand when it came to disgusting things like that. Then again, even these two demons stunk. "So why were you two waiting for me?" Wouldn't it make more sense for them to get a lead by training together while she was busy?"

"We all wanted to become Barons together, didn't we?" Sonata beamed, holding her arm out. "I'll set up the simulation." Sonata was a strange demon. Most demons despised technology, but Sonata was adopted into the Tower Society when she was an infant. As a result she was very used to technology. She pressed buttons on the remote, summoning a holo of an enemy. "This is Baroness Rowena, the Baroness of Lies." Sonata smiled. "Think we can practice against her?" Calciferous gazed upon his old enemy from many many years ago and nodded. "This one will be a cinch." Ophie sighed as if this was all a bother, pulling her blades out from her cloak with her tails, swinging them in the air in front of her. "Fine by me. Let's do this fast then."

Using her magic, Ophie made herself invisible and hid while Calciferous took the front guard, blocking against the spider claws and the venom. "Watch out, she can mess with your head!" Calciferous warned. "Don't get distracted!" He swung his sword in an expert stroke, a spark of electricity bursting from the clash of blade on holoflesh. Sonata enlarged her fist to deliver a powerful strike, knocking Baroness Rowena back. "Come on." Rowena grinned, spreading her fangs. "Don't hurt me, I'm your friend!" Calciferous froze for a moment. "E-Echo?" But for Ophie, Katua's unmistakable red flaming hair was brewing before her eyes. "You're already dead. I saw it with my own eyes." Ophie touched the red soul piece pendant on her necklace, dashing forward, swinging her tails in front of her to slash with the twin blades, ripping out Katua's throat. The holo Baron dissipated then, turning into dust. "Good work everyone." Sonata clapped. "Wanna have cookies to celebrate?"

Demons were all evil. But as Ophie enjoyed cookies with Sonata and Calciferous, she figured that if those two weren't demons, maybe she could count them as friends.

When morning came, Rene was there to wake her up. Alice looked around for Baron Pierce, but he was not there. "You've been sleeping for a long time," since seven PM the night before. It was now close to ten, not that Alice could tell time. "Wh-where?" She asked, pointing to the spot next to her. "Breakfast, I'll take you to them once you're dressed," Rene smiled. She brushed her hair and tied it up with ribbons, then helped Alice wiggle into a red dress with flowers. "You look very nice," Rene complimented, picking Alice up. She was much taller, close to six feet in height. "Hu...man?" Alice asked slowly, to which Rene nodded. "Yes, we're both humans. You'll meet the others today," there were more of them? "You're the first pet though, the others are all servants and workers." Those were words Alice was familiar with, classifications were something humans were given after being evaluated. Alice had always failed their tests, she scored on the lowest rung of human class: pet.

"Once you're strong enough, you'll be able to walk around on your own." Rene had a pretty necklace too, Alice noticed. Her's was purple, with a tear shaped gem. "I'm sure you're going to love it here." They went down a staircase, to the first floor, where Baron Pierce was taking breakfast with his Baronlings. Rene placed Alice down in a chair and curtsied, leaving them to their meal. "Good morning," he pat her head in greeting. Alice beamed, looking up at him. "M-morn...morning!" Alice repeated, Calciferous making a sound of distress on the other side. "You owe me ten pounds!" The demon Alice had not met yet snickered. "I guess you do speak," Baron Pierce smiled, pleasantly surprised. Alice blushed and looked down at her plate, "I wonder where Ophie is?" Calciferous mused, stirring his coffee.

Alice looked at her plate, it had a bowl with yellow stuff in it, topped with strips of what smelled like meat. She nibbled on a piece, it was crispy and salty, Alice decided she liked it. She tried the yellow stuff next, it was slightly sweet and milky. "That's called bacon and polenta. It's a delicacy, in some places," Calciferous said, practically inhaling his food. "After breakfast, we'll all go to the orchard." Baron Pierce decided, "it will be nice to get some training in outside." Alice stirred bits of bacon into the polenta, enjoying the combination of salty and sweet. It made the flavors calm a bit on her tongue and she ate until she was full. They were all waiting for Ophie, who had yet to come down to breakfast. "She has to primp herself every morning," the blonde demon joked. "Oh! I don't think I introduced myself. I'm Sonata," she smiled, reaching across the table with a hand.

Alice hesitated, shaking it. "Al-Ali..ce..." she mumbled, attempting to smile. "So where did you get her?" Sonata turned to question Pierce. "I did not want to support the unethical buying of humans, but Calciferous convinced me it might be nice to have someone once you three go on to become Barons." Pierce explained as he sipped his coffee, "it was love at first sight, you could say." There were other pets, higher quality pets, that he could have gotten. Ones with talents like singing or dancing, ones with physical prowess or interesting talents. He had known as soon as he saw her that Alice was going to be the one he got, if for no reason other than the starry look in her eyes as she starred at the ceiling.

It was as if the sky itself was breaking. For many years and months and days and nights, Celeste Angeal sobbed on her broken throne. Her beloved was dead and there was no one in the entirety of Heaven that could cure her heart. "Is she still crying because of a demon?" Ophelia asked, sitting outside the room on the golden steps. Her brother looked at her with incredulity in his eyes. "Still? You know they were lovers right? They pledged to live their whole lives with each other, you know." Laertes rolled his eyes, groaning. "You're really so insensitive, sister." Ophelia crossed her wings, frowning. "But she's just a demon." Demons were all evil and vile anyways, what was the big deal? "Queen Kitra was kind to us." Laertes rubbed at his eyes. For some reason even he was upset about the passing, even after all this time.

"Queen Celeste, the Kingdom needs you. You have to-" She paused. She and Laertes decided they would tend to Queen Celeste rather than simply listening to her mad wails outside her room. But looking into those eyes Ophelia could only see the eyes of insanity and grief. "You're really..." Even her hair had grown black stripes in her grief. She was no longer the beautiful angel, but one broken down by tears and pain. "Let's just give her some time." Laertes pulled Ophelia out of the room. "She's not ready for us yet." But there was a Kingdom to manage, they wouldn't wait forever for a grieving Queen to buck up and get her heels on.

With a gasp, Ophie pulled herself awake. She dressed herself silently, shaking her head, making sure her brilliant white wings were properly magically disguised, making sure to poke holes for her tails to slip through and curve upwards to rest on her shoulders. Her tails were obnoxiously long, reaching higher thanher head and just as heavy. It was a pain to deal with, but a pain Ophie was used to. She hummed a few bars of a song to prepare her head for the day. Her singing was surprisingly elegant for someone as rough spoken as her. Once she was ready, Ophie the demon headed out of her room and down the stairs, wondering what sort of shenanigans were waiting for her now.

Downstairs, it seemed the other two Baronlings had gathered. Not only that, but Baron Pierce was already spoiling the new one, with one of the servants seemingly making friends with her. "I hope there's a reason she's sitting in my chair." Ophie grumbled, not wanting human stink on her chair. "You don't always have to sit on the same chair, silly." Sonata always looked pretty, wearing stunning dresses every day regardless of the occasion. "You keep your fangs out of the human, who knows what crazy things you'll want to dress her up in." Sonata had a silly grin on her face as if she was already planning out outfits in her head. Ophie spun to stare at Cal who kept looking at Sonata as if he was seeing a ghost of the past. "What's got your goat?"

Cal grinned, shaking his head. "Hey, Alice, can you read? One of my best friends always loved to read books." Who was he talking about? Someone annoying like him couldn't possibly have friends. "Here's her copy of the first Harry Potter books. It's old, but I kept it in good condition." It looked worn but still usable despite being many hundreds of years old by now. "It couldn't even bathe itself." Ophie interrupted, grumpily sitting in a different chair to eat her breakfast. "Her." Sonata corrected with a nudge. "Alice is a girl, silly, not an it." Cal's fanged grin only grew wider. "How about we use Harry Potter to teach her how to read?"

"Oh, look who decided to join us," Baron Pierce teased as he sipped his drink. Ophie had arrived at last, Alice gave a little wave to her, she was stirring the polenta, the bacon bits disappearing. "She's sitting there because I wanted her to," Pierce replied simply. "There are no assigned seats Ophie, pick another spot." The lights from the window made the glass throw little rainbows across the white tablecloth. Alice lifted up her cup to get a better look, but the rainbow had disappeared. She placed it back down, the rainbow returning, much to her delight. The others did not seem as enthused by this as she was, although Baron Pierce was watching her with an amused smile.

Alice looked up, keep her fangs out? She looked at Sonata, was she going to eat her? Alice had heard of bad demons that still ate humans, despite the laws, because they could not help their cravings. Those demons were supposedly killed during the first wave of demon justice. Messiah did not want them to kill the humans, but he thought that they were a beastly species that needed to be tamed. These were all second-hand stories of course, ones that had gotten told to Alice by Monaka or other humans. Sometimes, in those places, the humans would tell stories at night. There was one kind human in the cage next to her that would humm when Alice could not sleep because of nightmares. "Come here you," Baron Pierce reached over to wipe the blood dripping from the side of her mouth. Standing behind him was a shadow with a toothy smile. Alice was used to these shadows, she had seen them since the day she was born.

She never told anyone about them, simply because she couldn't and she had no way to indicate they were there. The shadows were strange, they taunted her, sometimes they would whisper when she tried to sleep, or push her when she was doing something important. The shadow disappeared when she blinked and she turned back to look at the others. Calciferous had said her name, he wanted to know if she could read. Alice shook her head slowly, N-no," she replied simply. Many humans were uneducated, the demons did not see the need unless they had an important service job, like working in factories, or putting on plays. Alice, of course, had nothing so important, so she had never learned to read or write. She could not identify numbers or letters, but she could find patterns, something she was especially good at.

"I think, since we are all done with breakfast, we should go to the orchard." Baron Pierce stood, he had finished his drink. He plucked Alice up from her chair, holding her against his hip. "It's a beautiful spring day and some fresh air will do us all some good," did fresh air mean outside? Alice wondered. Baron Pierce waited for his three Baronlings to follow him before they went down a set of stairs around the back side of the home. Alice's eyes widened as she saw it, rows and rows of trees bearing colorful fruit. There were vegetables planted in the ground, a lake with a doc and a small boat, and a garden full of flowers. They went to the apple orchard, where the air smelled sweet with spring fruit and the sky was vibrant blue.

It was time for them to get to the orchard for whatever it was Baron Pierce had in mind. "But I like that chair." Ophie always chose that chair even when she first came here two months ago. She would have to choose a different chair for now then, because it was going to stink of humans now, unfortunately. "We'll have to teach her to read." Cal said with a shake of the head. "It's something everyone should be allowed to enjoy." Ophie snorted derisively. "Not that there's many books anymore. Not many demons out there aspiring to be authors." Where most demons just wanted to hunt or torture or fight, those thirsting for new creative stories to dive into were left starved as books were barely ever published these days. It was a shame, in Heaven the Illuminous Library never stopped getting more collections added to it's shelves.

Wasn't that simply proof that angels were just better than demons then?

"We'll teach her to read later then." Cal grinned at her. "For now we'll have to settle with telling her stories." Sonata brightened up as she finished clearing up the plates, bringing them to the sink for the maids to wash. "I like that. You've got lots of great stories, Cal!" It seemed to Ophie that her other Baronlings knew each other before coming here, since they were close even when Ophie first showed up at Baron Pierce's castle. Sonata moved to Alice's side as Baron Pierce began transporting himself and Alice to the orchard outside. As they walked Ophie absentmindedly rubbed at her fake horns, itchy against her scalp. "Maybe try shampoo?" Cal grinned, falling into step with her. "Oh, shut up." Ophie retorted very imaginatively.

The orchard was pretty of course. "It's nice when things are green. I've had enough of winter." Cal made a face. Ophie wasn't alive at the time, but there was a good thirty years or so when the Earth was trapped in an eternal winter. Thanks to the efforts of long past Emperor of Japan, Ira Shoku, he worked together with Loretta Hemond to put an end to the winter. Japan was the last bastion of humanity and Ophie only wondered how long it would be until Messiah declared all out war on the tiny island nation. She was surprised Pierce took care of the garden, but in reality it wasn't as pretty as the gardens angels had in Heaven. "I always love coming here." Sonata bent down to pick up a little bunny, nuzzling it with her cheek.

"Careful, it might have diseases." Ophie warned, turning away. Who knew what illnesses demons brought from their stinky hell anyways? "I'm sure it'll be fine." Cal grinned, sitting down as he waited for instructions from Baron Pierce. "Look, it's a bunny, Alice! They're really soft, do you want to try touching it?" Sonata put the creature close to Alice so she could reach out if she wished. The blonde demon beamed as she waited to see Alice's reaction. The silver haired demon rolled her eyes, turning to look at the calm waters out on the lake, the sun shining off of the rippling surface.

Alice knew what books were, of course, she had seen them, she had simply never read from one. Stories she liked, stories were something she was well aqcuainted with. Oh the stories Alice could tell if she could speak properly, but no one had ever needed her words until now and by now, it was too late. She had none of the eloquence the others had when they said things. Her words were stuttered and awkward, she was stupid, she knew, the demons had always said so. Still, she would have liked to learn to read, she would have liked to learn to speak like them. "Yes, Cal is a great story teller." Pierce agreed, perhaps accusing him of making up such grand tales. He lifted Alice up with ease and carried her outside, beckoning for them all to follow him.

The air was warm, outside. The sky was a bright blue, dotted with cotton candy clouds and birds that chirped. Two human servants set down a picnic blanket, arranging a space for them to train. Alice looked at the bunny Sonata had picked up, her eyes lighting up in delight. She reached out to touch it, its ears were soft. It was brown, the same color as the dirt beneath the trees. Her eyes were alight with delight as she touched it, petting its body with awkward, clumsy movements. Alice liked the bunny, she decided. "Don't forget to put it back where you found it," Baron Pierce was smiling too. He set Alice down on the picnic blanket and turned towards his Baronlings. "Now, you three, we'll begin today with some warm ups," there was a twinkle of mischief in his eyes.

"I'm thinking of a flower, a special flower. It has a green stem and purple petals, but the center of it is yellow. The first one that brings me this flower will get to spar with me," he sat down on the picnic blanket. "The losers will have to walk to Paris to bring it to the witch." There was only one witch they referred to as The Witch, of course. It was Baron Messiah's pet, a girl with long red hair and multicolored eyes that collected rare ingredients to make potions with. Baron Pierce had only met her once. He had seen the hollowness inside of her, the despair in her eyes. He brought her flowers every so often, knowing it would not quell the misery she felt, but at least stem it for a while. "Ready? Set.... Go!"

He knew exactly where the flower was, of course. Baron Pierce had a special ability, he could sense every living thing in his garden. If he closed his eyes, he could hone in on the flower's location. "Alice, have you heard of witches?" Baron Pierce asked his pet, who was watching two bunnies run across the orchard. She turned towards him and shook her head. Alice had never heard of witches, she knew of demons and angels too, but not witches. "They're like humans, but they can use magic, like demons." She leaned closer, "Ma...magic?" She asked, her voice one of awe. He nodded, reaching behind her ear, a flower growing in his palm. Alice started, she had not expected a flower to be in her ear. "There is one witch that helped the demons win the war and once it was won, the other mages all disappeared."

Side Story: What happened to Doll?

Doll flicked her saber to get the blood off of it, her brow pinched. "Next time, I won't be so merciful." She said quietly, the offending demon disintegrating, his blue blood turning to ash. "Very good," Messiah purred. "He should have known better, eating humans is a terrible offense." It was illegal, the abuse and consumation of humans. They could be used for other things though, pleasure, sport, work. Doll did not agree with it, but she could not go against Messiah. After all, if she wanted to keep Christopher alive, she had to play by his rules. Her husband, still a human, his body frozen in time thanks to Messiah's magic, was holed up in Doll's room. He was not allowed to leave it without her company, for fear that a demon might snatch him from her. "You are dismissed," he wore a fox mask over his faceless face, but Doll could hear the smile in his voice.

She nodded, dipping into a curtsey and taking her leave. After the final attack on the Tower Society, Doll had lost everything. Her sisters were assumed dead, her child missing. The only thing she had left was her husband, who was growing antsy over the two hundered years of inaction. She stepped into the hallway that led to her room, stopping in front of a door painted green. There was a sign hand lettered on it in Latin, Do not knock, it scares the plants. With a sigh, Doll pushed the door open. The room was a dream, or at least, to someone like Zinnia evernight. There were plants hanging from the ceiling, a bed with a reading knock, and a large window that allowed plenty of natural light into the room. Pushed into one corner were her supplies, messy to Doll, but organized to the witch. Currently, she was stooped over the cauldron, mixing something that smelled like calalillies and spice.

"Close the door behind you," Zinnia did not look up from her work. "I was wondering if you could cast the spell again?" Doll asked. It had been nearly fifty years since Zinnia's last attempt. She looked no different than the day they had met, witches aged at a crawl, after all. The only thing that grew longer was her hair, which was braided in a messy plait down her back. "I told you already, did I not? If it does not work, it means they are dead." Doll clutched the ribbon in her hands, "please, just one more time," She needed to have hope, she had to. "They're still out there, I can feel it!" Zinnia turned and put down her wooden spoon. "Fine," she sighed, grasping her cane. Now that Azure was a Baroness, she did not have time to take care of Zinnia's excess of mana, it needed to be expelled somehow.

She filled a shallow bowl with water and placed it on the ground. The finding spell was complex, Doll knew. She wordlessly handed over the ribbon, a strand of white hair still attached to it. Zinnia placed it in the bowl and drew the runes around it, having memorized them ages ago in an attempt to find those she, herself had lost. The magical world had disappeared off of the radar completely, even if Zinnia was ever free of Messiah, she could never return home. "Which one does this belong to?" Zinnia asked, Doll's heart thumping in her chest. "Echo, it belongs to Echo." Zinnia nodded and turned back to the bowl, uttering a long incantation. Nothing was happening, as expected. Echo was dead, just as they had expected.

"I'm sorry Doll, but they're gone." Zinnia placed a hand on the elder demon's shoulder. Doll's hands were shaking. "Thank you for trying again," she breathed out a shuddering sigh. Doll had turned away when the water began to glow. "On second thought," Zinnia cleared her throat, she had a faint smile. "It looks as though she simply does not want to be found." Doll whirled around, the bow in the water was spinning wildly. "Echo is-" her breath was caught in her throat. "Echo's alive!" She fell to her knees, watching as the bow began to slow and the glow faded. Tears sprung to her eyes, "she's alive," Zinnia knelt down beside her. She plucked the bow out of the bowl and handed it back to Doll. "It seems your sister is not too keen on being caught."

Doll nodded, Echo had always been like that. Reclusive, she preferred animals and books to people. Still, if Echo was out there, Doll had to find her. She had to confirm with her own eyes that Echo was still alive. "Thank you Zinnia," Doll clasped her hands. She reached into her pockets, pulling out a soul piece. "Take this as thanks," she pressed it into the witch's hand. "Whatever will I do with this?" She asked, curious. "I don't know, but knowing you, you'll find something." Doll was giddy and in her haste, she nearly left Echo's ribbon behind. She scooped up the maroon colored bow and headed to her own room, where her husband was waiting. He was sitting on an armchair beside the fire, despite the fact that it was a spring day. It was always cold in the castle, he claimed.

"Christopher!" Doll attacked him in a flurry of kisses, dotting them across his brow and down his nose, until their lips met. "What has you in such a state?" He asked, tucking a strand of blonde hair behind her ear. "It's Echo," she showed him the bow, still wet from the enchantment. "She's alive and we're going to find her."

|| Countdown to X-Day || Sound Holic ||

For some reason Baron Pierce had a relatively simple task for them. He wanted them to find a flower in the garden. What kind of task is this? He surely is an evil creature, and this was a trap to catch a poor unsuspecting angel that didn't know any better! But she still needed to be able to advance in her training and become a proper Baron so that she'd have a chance to meet Demon King Messiah face to face. "A flower? That shouldn't be too hard." Sonata had a wry smile, a rare competitive light in her eyes. Calciferous smirked, tapping his foot. "We'll, let's get this done, shall we?" Ophie was pensive as she thought. The Witch was truly a pitiful creature.

Long ago the Angels were watching her to observe and see what would become of her. There were talks of killing her before she could become the tool for evil. Because of Cerce's hesitation, they chose not to kill her but save her instead, hoping for a chance that she would not become evil. "Hey, don't space out or you'll never find it!" Sonata sang as she made her body large to make it easier to run around for the flower. "Don't tell me what to do." Ophie growled, slapping her cheeks as she spread her leathery wings to fly around the Orchard. Stinky demons always thought they knew best, didn't they? Her eyes scanned the horizon, trying to hone in on the small details in the flower brushes.

After fifteen minutes of searching Ophie heard a cry of joy. "I found it!" Sonata's voice echoed through the orchard. Cal glanced up from his search of a strawberry bush and Ophie hopped out of the lake, wiping her wings down to try to get rid of the water. Victory was in Sonata's hands, but maybe if they could pry it from her hands they could count as the winner. Sonata enlarged her legs and began to spring for Baron Pierce. Calciferous charged with a lightning strike, static energy filling the air as he clashed, swinging his sword. "It has to be me, Sonnie!" Cal grimaced, bearing his power. "I have to become a Baron!" Sonata stuck her tongue out, kicking him back with her size. "Then you'll have to take the flower from me, won't you?"

Invisible, Ophie flew right for Sonata. She couldn't win against the size changing demon, but she could try to sneak the flower away while unseen. Her tails slashed at Sonata's fingers to try to loosen their grip on the plant when a large hand wrapped around her leg, tossing her onto the grassy mound. "Sorry, Ophie, but I know your tricks by now." Sonata stuck her tongue out and giddily presented the prize to Baron Pierce with aplomb, returning to her natural size once again. Ophie became visible again, panting. Cal shrugged. "Looks like we're visiting Zinnia again, huh, Ophie?" It wasn't their first time, it was no secret that Sonata Delanore was stronger than the both of them. There was no way she could share King blood, right? "I guess so." Ophie only hoped Laertes was also having trouble, she didn't want to lose to her little brother too.

Baron Pierce rose, greeting his three Baronlings. Alice watched as they all came running back, but only Sonata was victorious. Alice's eyes were wide as Sonata shrunk down, Baron Pierce taking the flower from her, ever so gently. It blossomed in his hands, sparkling. He placed it in a glass cylinder, smile never leaving his lips. "You three are progressing greatly," he handed the cylinder to Calciferous to take care of. "This will keep it safe," as for Sonata, she was looking eagerly for her prize. "Ready?" He asked, "you two stand back." Calcifer took a seat beside Alice, "watch carefully." He said, "or you might miss the whole fight." Alice turned back to look at Sonata and Pierce, they had taken a few steps the other way. She grew to the size of a building, Alice's jaw nearly dropping as she looked up to follow her growth.

Baron Pierce did not seem disturbed, if anything, he seemed amused. "Ready!" Cal called, pulling Alice onto his lap. "Set? Go!" He waved an arm, Sonata running towards him. Baron Pierce side stepped her gargantuan footsteps easily, the trees seeming to bend towards him. Vines grew from the ground, wrapping around Sonata's legs and pulling them together. She cried out as she nearly fell, breaking free of the attack and attempting to squash the Baron with a hand. Alice cried out, not wanting either of them to get hurt. "Don't worry," Cal pat her head. "They're good at this, they won't get hurt." He assured her, but Alice was unconvinced. The ground seemed to shake as a tree grew as tall as Sonata herself. Baron Pierce grasped a branch, allowing it to carry him up as though it were an elevator. They were face to face now, the two of them.

Alice leaned forward, looking at the grass, it all seemed to move Pierce, as though each strand were alive. "I apologize Sonata," he said, his voice gentle. "For what?" She asked, panting, she was hurt. "This," he reached an arm out and from it burst apples, hitting her in the face, one after the other. He yanked a hand down, the tree shrinking before she could grasp him. He rode it like a surfer did a wave and took her down easily in one final move. Sonata began to shrink, laying on the ground and moaning in pain. "You did well, but you're still too naive." He shook his head, "Next time, do not overestimate your reach." Sonata nodded, groaning. "You didn't have to go that hard," but her wounds were already healing. Demons, after all, healed swiftly from minor wounds.

Baron Pierce went back to the picnic blanket. "If you two wish to spar before you go, I won't deny you the opportunity." He lifted Alice off of Cal's lap. "Did you enjoy the show?" He asked, tapping her on the nose. Alice smiled and nodded, she had enjoyed it very much. Even if it had made her scared, she had never seen two demons fighting up close. Especially such powerful ones. "H-hurt?" Alice asked, but Baron Pierce shook his head, wiping up the blood from around her mouth. "No, I am quite alright. Sonata, on the other hand, may be sore for the next few days." She groaned from somewhere behind them and Baron Pierce placed her down on the picnic blanket once more. "Come, Calciferous, Ophie, I will take you two on at once."

Ophie was quiet as she watched Sonata and Baron Pierce going at it. She was trying to learn from the fight and watch what they could do. She was only an Angel Knight, there was a limit to what she could do. By watching powerful demons do battle hopefully she could learn from their techniques. Alice seemed to be afraid but Cal was there to convince her that things would be fine. Still, Baron Pierce wielded great power over nature, one would think he were a druidic mage rather than a demon. Not that there were any mages left anymore, other than Zinnia, no other has been sighted for centuries. "I'd say Sonata stands a good chance." Cal was grinning as if watching a cool action movie. "Baron Pierce isn't a baron without reason." Ophie narrowed her eyes in derision.

Just as expected, the giantess fell to her face, moaning in pain as Baron Pierce proved himself the victor. Then things became more interesting as he challenged both Cal and Ophie to a fight at the same time. "I'll show Princess Alice just what I can do!" Cal said with a confident grin, pulling his lightning sword out as he took his stance. Ophie sighed, standing up. It seemed she was getting her chance to spar with Baron Pierce after all. "Don't overestimate yourself." Ophie warned her teammate. "That's what keeps getting you every time." She pulled her tail swords out with a satisfying slice, wings flaring behind her as she faded into invisibility. Baron Pierce sat calmly, waiting for Cal and Ophie to approach.

Calciferous, naturally, was not a demon who shied away from a challenge. With a roar he rushed in sword swinging, bring it down on Baron Pierce's arm. The blade met the bark of a tree but then lightning struck, burning the bark into char. He swung again, deflecting Baron Pierce's apple bomb, and delivered an uppercut followed up by another strike of lightning, pushing Baron Pierce back. Ophie then struck with her tails, delivering a sweeping slash at Baron Pierce's ankles from invisibility, slicing the vines to ribbons as they formed to protect his backside.

With a prideful grin Calciferous jumped right at Baron Pierce, sword aimed at his heart. "I got you! This is checkmate, Pierce!" He yelled. "Cal, no!" Did he not notice his stupidity, this was exactly what Pierce was waiting for! A tree burst out from Baron Pierce's hand, stabbing Cal through the shoulder, impaling him in the sky as the bark scraped against his wound, the wood growing upwards. Ophie grit her teeth, lunging in to deliver more attacks from the safety of invisibility, aiming her tails at Baron Pierce's throat. As the vines reached out to search for her she jumped back, using her wings to propel her backwards and looped around to attack at Baron Pierce's side, digging her spikes into his ribs.

Instead of doing damage, she was surprised to feel another layer of tough bark inside his skin, so tough she couldn't pull her blades out. Vines grabbed at her wrists, pulling her into the air. "Calciferous, you're a bit too reckless I'm afraid." Baron Pierce's voice was mild. "Ophie, you rely too much on your invisibility in fights." Ophie struggled as she was made visible again and placed on the ground next to Cal, who was rubbing his hurt shoulder. "Next time, just you wait." Cal grunted, looking a bit dizzy. Ophie nursed her tails, the blades feeling sore after being stuck in hard bark.

Alice screamed when the trunk of the tree pierced through Cal's shoulder. Blue blood spattered everywhere, the ground flecked in it. "It's okay," Sonata soothed, running her fingers through buttery locks as Alice hid her face in Sonata's side. "Don't worry, Pierce will win, everyone will be fine." Sure enough, Pierce did win, but Cal was nursing his shoulder and Ophie her tails. Alice reached for them, whimpering. "Come on," Sonata lifted her. "Let's go help them up." Alice could not resist being lifted of course, not that she minded. She was smaller than all of them, weaker than all of them. If any of the demons so wished it, they could kill Alice without a second thought. Still, despite the years of abuse at demon's hands, Alice was not afraid of them.

"Did you enjoy the show?" Cal asked, grinning a fanged grin. Alice shook her head, "H-hurt?" She pointed to his shoulder, but the wound was already closing. "Don't worry, it only hurts a little." Of course, it would take up to a week to mend fully, the skin closing was always the first step. Baron Pierce reached to a tree, apples falling into his hands. "Good work everyone," he complimented, giving them each an apple to recover their stamina. "I suppose we should break for lunch, then Calciferous and Ophie, I expect you two to deliver the flower." He handed Alice an apple, her eyes lighting up in delight. She took the apple from him, biting into it, her eyes lighting up in delight as the sweet juice dribbled down her chin.

"Baron Pierce!" Rene called from the deck of the mansion. "A visitor is here to see you Sir!" She curtsied politely before disappearing back inside. "You three watch Alice please, I suspect this might take a bit of time." He pat her head once before leaving, going back to the main estate. Alice watched him leave, wondering where he had to go. The servants had set up lunch for the others in the orchard, the spring air sweet and the rabbits activate. Alice watched them jump past, the hairs on the back of her neck standing up. There was a shadow taunting her from the trees. She shook her head, closing her eyes, knowing it would go away if she ignored it. "Come on, let's go eat!" Cal stretched, throwing his apple core on the ground. "I'm starving!"

The table was made of stained glass, the pretty colors refracting around them. "Ophie, pick your seat first, since it's so important to you." Sonata teased, sticking her tongue out at the demon. She placed Alice in the chair beside her, in case the human needed any help. "D-do...g." She pointed to the creature sniffing around on four legs, it looked like the stuffed toy Pierce had bought her. "Yes, that's a dog." Sonata smiled, "it chases away the animals that want to eat the apples. This is a very important farm, it produces a lot of the vegetables and fruits for the demons and humans in Paris."

Sitting on the picnic mat, Ophie rubbed her tails, making hissing sounds as she smoothed out the tip, flattening the blades with her fingers. Sonata walked over with Alice in one hand, her other hand outstretched as an offer to help. Ophie accepted the help to get back to her feet. "You feeling okay?" She asked, her fingers lingering with a gentle touch. "He had it worse than me." Ophie pointed at Cal who was already grinning, raring to go despite the wound on his shoulder. Demons healed quickly, they were sturdy after all. Angels were a bit more delicate but Ophie didn't take much damage from the sparring match. "Why don't we all go to Paris together after eating?" Sonata suggested. "We can show her our cute new friend Alice!"

Cal unveiled the lunch sandwiches at the picnic table after Baron Pierce was called away and Ophie begrudgingly took her favorite spot as far from the sun as she could, because the bright noon sun hurt her sensitive eyes if it went into her retinas. "I'm excited. It's been a while since I visited Paris." Paris was known as the Paradise for demons, both before and after Baron Messiah took over and became the Demon King. "I wanna buy a scrying orb or something from her." Calciferous said, bouncing his leg as he ate the sandwich. Sonata was feeding Alice with enthusiasm, naturally as someone like her would. "You keep wasting your money on those orbs." Ophie took a scalding tone as she sneered, nibbling on a lettuce sandwich. "You'll never find Baroness Nova with them, she's probably long dead now." Cal shook his head, fiery passion in his eyes.

"I know she's not dead. She took Baroness Zinnia with her, I'm sure they're both just out there, waiting to be found again." Ophie rolled her eyes at his jubilance. "I believe in my old friends." Cal looked down at his hands, a distinct frown on his face where there was usually a confident smile. "The witch Zinnia and Baroness Zinnia are two different people." Sonata explained helpfully to Alice, who didn't know these things. "We're visiting the witch Zinnia, if we're all finished eating?" Ophie was already done, she couldn't stomach demon food much anyways. The drop of human blood in everything really wasn't all that appetizing. "Let's go, Baron Pierce wouldn't want us to be late." She scribbled a little note down so Baron Pierce would know they all went together.

Sonata was happy to be holding Alice, showing her the sights as they walked down the cobblestone road that would lead them to Paris itself. There was plenty of wildlife and animals to teach Alice the names of. Bunnies, birds, even a deer here and there poking it's head out from the thick woods. "There's Paris." Cal pointed to the tall tower you could see in the distance. "That's the Eiffel Tower. Baron King Messah spends most of his time there." It had become a castle, a home for Baron Messiah and hist most trusted cohorts whenever they came to visit. Baroness Anguis and Vaswald and Baron Eudaikos were among the honored guests that had special rooms for themselves. "You're Baron Pierce's property, so no one will bother you." Ophie murmured to the stinky human, watching as passerby demons eyed Alice, almost as if they were sizing her up.

Baroness Amica's Special Episode!

The sword went through Melody's heart and she let out a wail, transforming into a Soul Piece. Baron Messiah sneered, picking it up with a bag. "I'll get this disposed of properly. Don't worry, Doll, she won't suffer like you did." Doll was pale as she watched her beloved sister be taken away by Messiah's servants. But as an Apostle, she couldn't do anything even as her sword slashed through Melody's heart as if it were plastic. "As for you, Azure, you've served me well. You are now Baroness Amica, the Baroness of friendship. Azure beamed, wiping her bloody claws off on her shirt. "Yes! Thank you, Mas - thank you, Baron Messiah!" She felt power flowing through her. At last, she had finally received her dream. "You can have a castle in Italy. I'm sure all the pasta there will suit your palate." Azure bowed many times, groveling with happiness.

"I'm a Baroness now, Zinnia!" The white cat exclaimed to her friend. She had ran off to find Zinnia after the battle, finding a room just for her in the Eiffel Tower. The white witch looked at her, pain clear in her eyes. It had been a long hard road, but Azure had reached her goal. "Here! Take my blood! You'll become a demon, and then you'll be my Apostle!" She cut into her wrist, shoving it in front of Zinnia's face. "Then I'll take you back to Magnolia where you belong." At the battle of Cascade Bau, many mages were killed. Even Yulissa was killed by Azure's own hand. Still, it was as close to a home as anything else. "I'm sorry about Blithe... but you can still be free, Zinny." Blithe was defeated in Paris and as far as anyone else knew, the plucky fire demon with abnormally large mammary glands was as dead as they came.

Before Zinnia could ingest the blood however, a snake grabbed Azure by the ankle, lifting her in the air. "I told you, Messiah. Little Azure's plotting treason, don't you see?" Messiah walked in after Anguis, shaking his head in disappointment. "You no longer have immunity, Amica. You're a Baroness now, so you're not an Apostle anymore. Unfortunately, I can't let you have my pet. That's my property, you see." Azure bared her fangs, slashing at the snakes holding her up. "No! Let me go! I have to save her!" She cried, whimpering as more of Anguis's snakes traveled up her body, invading her holes. "Still, you were a valuable ally, Amica. I'll spare your life, but don't think there won't be punishment."

Baron Messiah pointed to the sorry witch trapped in Anguis's arms. "Kill that witch right now. I'll replace it with a better one, Anguis." The sadistic Baroness grinned wickedly. "Do make sure Zinnia and Amica watch and sear this memory in their minds forever." As punishment for her treason, Amica and Zinnia were forced to watch as over three days, Yue Eldriss was tortured, violated in her most deepest of places, and finally, allowed the sweet mercy of death. "I believe that should suffice." Demon King Messiah said once it was all over. "Azure, clean up the mess of your friend and run off to your new castle. That should be more than enough of a lesson." Azure whimpered, falling to her knees, clinging to the pieces of what used to be Yue. She stared after Zinnia as she was dragged off by Messiah, screaming voicelessly but there was no one who could hear her cry.

Sonata placed Alice in a seat beside her and fed her bits of sandwich. Alice couldn't eat much, but she enjoyed food, especially the sweet things that came after food. There was a bowl of candies in the center of the table, Alice reaching for one. It was slightly sour on her tongue, but still sweet. "No dessert until you've finished our sandiwch." Sonata scolded, but she was smiling. Alice whimpered, spitting the candy out onto her plate. She didn't want to be punished, of course, since that was something that the human had come to expect. Being scolded meant punishment, what it was varied demon from demon. "Don't worry," Cal reached across the table to snatch up another sandwich. "No one's going to hurt you here," he smiled a fanged smile and leaned back to devour his lunch. "Yeah, we should all go together!" Cal agreed, always hesitant to be separated from the others.

The demons were talking about things that Alice did not understand. Like scrying orbs and barons. Ranks were something she was vaguely aware of, she knew that the Barons were the strongest, that they owned plots of land all over. She also knew that every demon wanted to be the Baron of something, but what, Alice did not know. It did not matter to her, of course, in her mind, they were all equal. There were two Zinnia's and Alice's head was already spinning. Sonata tried to feed her more sandwich, but Alice shook her head and reached for another lemon candy. Sonata lifted her, it was time to go to Paris. Alice was excited to see the outside, she had only seen the surface a handful of times, ever since Monaka's death. From her memories, she recalled a vast forest and the cave she had lived in.

Along the way, they pointed out all sorts of shapes and gave them names. She was delighted to learn them, from deer to squirrel, Alice was a sponge soaking all of the information in. They could see Paris in the distance and pointed to something called the Eiffel Tower, a word much too complicated for her clumsy tongue. "And if they try to bother you, we'll beat 'em up!" Cal added, raising a fist in the air. Sonata laughed, a sound that was like the twitter of a bird. Alice tried to mimic the sound, but it was strange. She had never laughed before, or at least, not that she could recall. "B-ba...d." Alice's cheeks heated up to a vibrant shade of red, knowing she had probably done something that she shouldn't have. Sonata smiled, "we'll get a real laugh out of you!" She assured the tiny blonde human.

"We might just have to tickle it out of her, or maybe we'll make Ophie, since she's so fancy she can't bring herself to touch a human!" Calciferous laughed, he seemed to think that he was hilarious. Baron Messiah's castle was grand, with a garden that was in full flourish. It was armed to the teeth as well, with demons standing at every ten feet or so, holding weapons. "Halt! Who goes there!" A demon yelled, pointing a gun at them. "We're Baron Pierce's emmissaries!" Calciferous called, his tail flickering, apparently not worried about the large weapons. Alice cowered, hiding in Sonata's arms. Guns were scary, guns were what had killed Monaka. The gate in front fo them opened, they had been allowed entry.

❝I'll take his head, that's what my Queen ordered!❞

|| Countdown to X-Day || Sound Holic ||

If there was one thing the silver haired angel had in common with Alice, it was that neither of them had particularly big stomachs for eating. Sonata of course always ate heartily and was happy to do so, and it was a disgusting sight to watch as Calciferous scarfed food down his throat as if he were trying to feed a vaccuum cleaner. Really, didn't he have any semblance of standards? There was no way Ophie was ever going to get along with anyone here. Once it was time to head towards Paris and deliver the flower, Ophie made sure the wrap the cloak around her body, her twin tails swishing behind her with each step she took. Sonata and Calciferous were so troublesome the way they always tried to include her in everything. Yet somehow Ophie found herself falling into their pace every time.

As they were introducing animals to the stinky human, Sonata laughed and Alice found it necessary to try and copy the sound. Both Sonata and Calciferous seemed entertained by the sound, happy to have such a reaction from the human. Stinky humans, Ophie couldn't quite relate to the sentiment. They wanted her to tickle the human? "Sorry, I'm allergic." Ophie said with a roll of her eyes. Sonata looked at her for a moment. "If you were, Pierce wouldn't have made you give her a bath." She said with a sneaky grin. "Well, I choose to be allergic now." She didn't want to touch stinky demons or humans, something like that was beneath any self respecting angel! In any case, they made the walk to Paris unharmed, and the Eiffel Tower's guards were waiting for them down the Champs d'Elysee.

Cal announced themselves as Baron Pierce's emissaries, and that was enough for the guards to allow them to pass. Alice seemed afraid of the weapons the guards were holding but Ophie didn't really pay them any mind. Crude weapons like guns were nothing compared to the raw power a Baron could possess. If Alice wanted to be afraid of them, well, wasn't that the limit of what a weak human could do? "Be on good behavior, the witch is a well respected person here." Ophie warned Alice. "Messiah executed people for even insulting her, let alone causing her trouble." He was protective of his property, after all. One of these days, Ophie would be the executioner lowering the blade on the stocks to Messiah's neck, but today was not that day.

The Witch's room's door was closed but Sonata seemed happy enough to simply open it and peer in. "Zinnia! We're here with another flower!" The size changing demon said with a happy smile, golden hair reflecting the afternoon sun's light. "You're running out of space for the flowers." Ophie commented, glancing at the shelf. "Sorry for interrupting your work." Her tails were taut, tight against her back so they wouldn't knock any potions over. "Here's the money." Cal slid right up to Zinnia's side. "Another order of a pack of five scrying orbs, please!" He still hadn't found Nova yet, but someone like Cal was apt to never lose hope until he saw the broken soul piece before his eyes.

While most of Paris stunk like demons, at least in Zinnia's workstation, it didn't smell so bad. The stench of the potions more than masked any scent left by demons.

Alice nodded her head, she would be on good behavior. Her best behavior! She didn't want to be executed, especially not by the King. Of course Alice knew who Messiah was, but that was the extent of her knowledge. She had heard him mentioned plenty of times, King Messiah, Baron King Messiah, he went by many titles, but most simply knew him as the one that had enslaved all of humanity. Not that Alice knew the difference, of course, considering she had been born into this era. She had no idea how old she was, but she had never known anything different. Alice sat up a little bit straighter in Sonata's arms, hoping that she did not appear as afraid as she felt. "Don't scare her Ophie, you're going to make her afraid of everything." For the most part, Alice did not seem afraid, mostly curious. Inside of the palace was stunning, Messiah had surrounded himself in the beauty of earth. He had water fountains and sculptures, paintings hanging on the walls that Alice thought were nice. There were shadows dancing behind them, she winced, turning away to look at the stained glass.

Sonata entered the room without knocking. Alice looked around to try and take it all in, the plants hanging from the ceiling, the tall window, the book shelf. "Welcome," Zinnia turned and Alice's eyes widened. She knew this person, she had seen her before. She could not recall where or how, but the girl called Zinnia looked familiar. "It seems you have a new friend, I don't sense any sort of power from her, human?" She asked, taking the jar from Calciferous. "Thank Baron Pierce for me, I will cherish this flower as much as the others." Their petals were rare and were good for potions. Alice looked at the rows and rows of potions of all colors and sizes. Zinnia handed Calciferous five scrying orbs, closing his hand around the money. "You need this more than I do," people came from far and wide for her potions, Zinnia did not charge them anything. She only ask that they bring the necessary ingredients with them.

"I will always find a place for them," Zinnia replied to Ophie. "It's no interruption, I was nearly finished for the day." She shook her head, her red hair sweeping across her shoulders. "Now, let's take a look at you." Alice swallowed hard, shaking her head and hiding her face in Sonata's shoulder. "She's shy," Sonata explained as Zinnia drew closer. Alice's heart thrummed in her chest, she could feel a hand prying at her, the witch was circling them. To Alice's relief, she did not seem to recognize her. "I'm not surprised Baron Pierce chose this one," Zinnia smiled as she settled into a chair, "her eyes are bright and curious, what is he calling her?" She asked, stirring her pot. Alice unburried her face, wondering what it was in the cauldron. "Do you want to tell her?" Sonata asked kindly.

"Al-Ali...Alice." She muttered, looking away again, her cheeks heating up. "Alice," Cal supplied. He glanced at Ophie, who was oddly quiet. Zinnia scooped up a few potions in her arms and carried them over. "As thanks," she handed one to each of them, including Alice. They were each labelled, but Alice could not read. She shook it, holding it up to the light and watching as glitter sunk to the bottom. Alice held it closely against her, cherishing the gift, even if she did not know what it was. "How long will you be in Paris for? Or do you intend to return to the estate now?" Was it Alice's imagination, or was there loneliness in the witch's eyes?

|| Countdown to X-Day || Sound Holic ||

"She should be." Ophie spoke in her usual flat deadpan. "She's a human, there's no telling what a demon might do." While it was against the law to kill them, that law was mostly made because the supply of humans was dangerously low these days. With so many dead humans and so many humans refusing to make children due to not wanting their children to be forced to live in a demon-ruled world, was it any wonder the human population was dwindling and dwindling? Unfortunately for demons, they refused to create artificial test tube babies, since the blood from the artificial humans was never as good as a pure natural human. To the demons, such a thing was a waste of time and energy to grow. The Eiffel Tower was grandiose in it's interior, but it was almost all stolen from human craftsmanship, not that humans were any better.

Inside Zinnia Evernight's alcove on the eighth floor, it did not smell nearly as bad as it did outside. Ophie was glad that her nose was given peace in the meantime. They delivered the flower just as ordered and the potionmaking witch was more than happy to receive it. "He says he'll try to get you a Hellbloom flower soon." Sonata said with a conspiratorial whisper. "He knows those flowers are really good for a witch's mana flow." They were incredibly rare, requiring pure blood to be able to grow and sprout into a healthy bud. Naturally, they only grew in Hell. Cal was quick to pocket his five new scrying orbs, still clinging to the faint hope of finding the old friends from a long time ago, friends most people would have accepted as dead and moved on since then.

Zinnia displayed interest in Alice then and Ophie watched the two interact with one another. Alice tried to say her name but the child was still unable to do even that. Ophie's tails folded together as she stared back at Cal who caught a glance at her. Potions were given to them in exchange for the flower. "This one's nightmare repellent." Ophie said pointedly, looking at the one she was given. "Is this yours by mistake?" She knew what happened to Zinnia and her lover, naturally Ophie was taught all about these historical events before she was put on this mission to Earth after all. "We should be heading back." Sonata frowned as she gathered everyone's potions into her bag. She seemed to notice something in Zinnia's eyes. "But if you'd like, do you mind showing Alice your home?"

Zinnia had a home for herself she could go to when Demon King Messiah was being generous. It was a perfect replica of her old home back in Costantina, though instead of having a family waiting inside, she was the only resident. "Um, if you're allowed to go home today?" No doubt the stinky human would be curious about what a witch's residence looked like. "Pierce won't mind, he's a patient Baron." Ophie added, folding her tails in her hands absentmindedly. "We could also explore Paris and get Sonata a proper wardrobe." Sonata, ever the fashionista, no doubt knew all about how Paris was the capital of fashion in the world.

Zinnia shook her head at Ophie's question, "No, that is for you. You never know when you might need some," she said soflty. Yue's death had been very public, Zinnia and Azure had been forced to watch it as her girlfriend was slowly tortured to death. She no longer had the ring Yue had given her, she had buried it along with Yue. It was too painful a weight to carry on her shoulders, but she knew that should she ever fall in love again, Messiah would not hesitate to kill whomever it was. He had made it abundantly clear that he was the only thing she was ever allowed to love and serve. He had gifted her things afterwards, as though attempting to buy her affection, but it changed nothing. She had tried to kill herself so many times afterwards that he had amended their contract once more. She could not harm herself intentionally, she could not consume potions meant to kill her, or step in front of a train.

Alice did not know why Zinnia or Ophie might need nightmare repellant. "This is a strength potion," Sonata explained to the little human, who was clutching the phial against her chest. "It'll probably come in handy later on," Cal spoke helpfully. He had gotten a potion of liquid luck, which he would save until it was time for Baron testing. All testing was now conducted by Messiah and in order to pass, one had to pledge fealty to him. Of course, there were other ways of becoming a Baron, if you could find the King's, who were released sometime during the Tower Society's downfall. Messiah had squirrled them away to their own little paradise, so going to him for testing was the easiest and most direct path. Alice looked up when her name was spoken, Zinnia seemed to brighten at the mention of showing them around her home. "I will be right back," she disappeared behind the door.

True to her word, she returned only moments later. "Alright, we can go." She reached into her robes, pulling out a key on a string. Zinnia closed the door and turned it in the lock, opening the door once again. Alice's eyes widened as she realized that it no longer led into the hallway. "Baron Pierce is very kind to you all, I'm sure." Zinnia smiled, "may I?" Sonata nodded and handed Alice over to her, who stiffened. Zinnia was not all that big, perhaps the same size as Ophie, but she carried Alice with ease into her home. She looked back at the others, hoping they would come too, that she would not be going alone with the strange. Cal and Sonata exchanged glances, they looked to Ophie to see if she had noticed the change too. Alice was not comfortable with Zinnia, even though they were largely still strangers, Alice trusted them.

"D...dog," Alice pointed to the bed in the corner. "That is for my familiar, Blithe," it was a dog bed, well, a fox bed, really, when Blithe was lazy and did not want to don a human form. Of course, it had been a very long time since Blithe had actually slept in the bed beside the hearth. "Here," she placed Alice on the counter and went into the fridge, "come you three, no need to be shy," she waved to the demons and took out a plate of miniature cakes. Alice's eyes widened, she looked to the others to see if it was okay to have one. With their approval, Alice took the one glazed in pink with a flower piped on top. It was buttery and moist, sweet, with a tart finish. "L-li-like!" Alice decided, finishing it and licking her fingers.

All of this work was to get a chance to get a moment alone with Baron Messiah. Ophie needed to do her best until it was time to have her testing personally overseen by Demon King Messiah. Once that happened, she would eliminate him like the monster he was. Then maybe her Queen Celeste would stop crying, then maybe Queen Celeste would finally smile one day again. "Fine. Thanks for the gift." Why would she need nightmare repellent? The silver haired demon didn't know but she wasn't excited to find out either. She handed it over to Sonata for safekeeping for now, since she was the one with the big backpack on her shoulders. Everyone had a potion, even Alice had received one. Now Sonata asked Zinnia if they could visit her home and to Ophie's surprise, the White Witch seemed excited almost.

With a turn of the key the door to the hallway transformed into a door to Zinnia's estate. Zinnia was holding Alice but even Ophie knew Alice was anxious that the other three wouldn't go with her. Naturally Sonata and Cal were eager to show that they weren't going to leave the stinky human with a stranger, even if the stranger was the great and only witch left in demon territory. All the pocket dimensions had closed themselves off, no longer allowing anyone outside in. Ever since her sister's death, Queen Levi had blocked the gates to Magnolia. No one was allowed in or out, it was a true isolationist city now. Zinnia's home smelled clean of the stink Paris and the rest of Europe had. It was nice here, and Ophie wished her nose would be free from assault everywhere else. "Thank you for the cakes."

"You're home!" A strange black shadow rose up from under the fridge. She morphed into a humanoid form with black wings on her head. A bat demon this was, one made out of mist. "Zinny! I missed you! Here, I brought you a present from Blithe!" The bla shadow did not seem to care about the visitors, though it sure was hiding, waiting until it knew who they it wasn't before popping up. She dug a hand through her chest to pull out a letter with a heart on the cover. "Who's that?" Sonata asked, pointing at the shadow. The bat demon puffed up her cheeks and stole a bite of Ophie's cake as punishment. "You don't know me? I'm Baron Messiah in the flesh!" She suddenly changed into Baron Messiah, giggling as she did do.

Ophie rolled her eyes. She knew of Rainarch of course, though this was her first time seeing the enigmatic demon in person like this. "You have quite the smelly guest." Ophie said to Zinnia with a shrug. "Smelly? I bathed last month!" Rain exclaimed, wiggling her ears. "You should be more polite as a visitor to Zinnia's home." Sonata chastised Ophie with a giggle. Calciferous was entertaining himself by poking and playing with Rain's squishy hands as he ate his cake. Ophie's cake would, sadly, go uneaten after being sullied by a demon's mouth.

Alice nearly fell off of the counter in her surprise when another demon appeared from the shadows. She looked to the others for help, but they seemed as surprised as she. "A letter?" Zinnia took the envelope from the demon. Alice did not know who this was, she looked between Sonata and Zinnia, watching as the demon morphed into Baron Messiah, giggling all the while. Alice did not know what to make of it, she was confused by the sudden change. The others acted as though this were normal. Zinnia placed the letter in her pocket, no doubt she was only going to read it in private. "It's no bother at all," Zinnia waved away Ophie's thanks. "It has been a long time since this home has had company. Thank you Rainarch, I've missed you too."

"Rainarch is not smelly," Zinnia shook her head, she knew that Ophie was not a demon, she could sense it. Zinnia had met angels before of course, the white streak in her hair was indicative of her history with them. "Rain, it's rude to eat a guests's cake," Zinnia chasitised with a sigh, shaking her head. "These are Baron Pierce's underlings, they are all competing to become Barons. This is his pet, Alice," Alice looked up shyly. Zinnia lifted her from the counter, "I suppose I should not keep you here any longer. I'm sure your Master is eager for you to return." Zinnia placed Alice on one of the chairs beside the hearth and began to go through her things on the shelf. "Here," she placed a necklace with a purple stone around the girl. "This is a seeking stone, they are hard to come by these days, but I trust you will take good care of it." Alice lifted the stone, looking at it in the light; it glittered, so she liked it.

Seeking stones amplified the powers of those around them, whether they be witch or demon. "Th....tha...nk... y-y-ou..." Alice trailed off, holding it in her hands. Two gifts in one day? Sonata lifted her from the chair. "Say bye-bye," she lifted Alice's hand, waving, as though the girl were a toddler. "B-by-bye," Alice stuttered. "Come on Ohie, let's get back." Cal winked, opening the door to the house. It led to the hallway outside of Zinnia's room and Alice blinked, magic confusing the poor thing. "Hang on," Sonata reached into her pocket, dabbing at the blood that had begun to dry on Alice's lips. The demon doctor had promised that she would stop bleeding from her mouth once she gained a bit of weight.

"I think Ophie just doesn't like anyone," Cal teased as they exited the castle. "If everyone is stinky, then no one is!" He pinched the bridge of his nose, teasing as he stuck out his tongue. "Stin...nnnn....k-ky?" Alice asked aloud, trying to find a source for the smell. "He's kidding," Sonata assured her. "But Ophie, you really shouldn't be so rude. Calling someone stinky to their face isn't the best way to leave a good impression. Don't forget, you're representing Baron Pierce as one of his Baronlings when you meet new people." Sonata lectured as they reached the road that would take them back to the estate.
