APPEARANCE:
Maya has something of an eclectic style, indulging in everything from band tees, to the most girlish of dresses. She favors a comfortable, breezy, and beachy look, wearing whites and blues more often than not. Her hair is usually kept in loose curls that dangle past her shoulders, and is carefully styled to look more effortless than they really are. Maya tends to have a warm disposition, and she moves with a self-assurance that is infectious to others. While she does not have the natural swagger, or amorous appeal of the children of Aphrodite, there is a presence about her that attracts others.
Flighty â Nosy â Single Minded
Maya has always been known as something of a free spirit, and extremely strong willed. When she has a mind to do something, very little can dissuade her from that path, for better or worse. This proclivity to follow her instincts and her heart can sometimes border on selfishness, at least according to her family, but having the conviction to go after the things she wants from life is not something Maya views as a detriment. She also is notoriously curious, which can often get her into trouble when she straying into other peopleâs concerns. Maya is however confident by nature, and usually approaches people and challenges with an air of ease that some envy. In a demigod prone to showboating, that might have been insufferable, but with Mayaâs more laid back demeanor and noncompetitive tendencies, people often find that appealing.
At school, Maya is rather friendly, and has never given over to the clique mentality that often permeates Legacy Academy, rather bouncing around many different groups. Maya is comfortable in her own skin, and often indulges in quiet alone time to both think and paint. Like the sun however, she tends to attract people, and she is rarely alone for long. Her sense of humor is sly, if somewhat corny, but Maya has a reputation for loving to laugh. Regardless of this outgoing nature, there is an underlying flightiness and lack of substance to many of her relationships; romantic or otherwise. Very few people see past the sunny mask into the pit of insecurity that lays beneath.
While Maya loves her family, she often feels out of place with them, like a warped puzzle piece that no longer fits properly. As sheâs gotten older, this feeling has only gotten worse, especially coupled with Maya increasing estrangement from her mother. People often like Maya on a surface level, or the idea of her, but sheâs often found that they donât stick around long past that point. This is especially true with regards to her visions, as some of her first friends at the academy befriended her specifically for that reason. While a younger Maya learned the hard way that people who are only kind to you because of what you can do for them are not true friends, it left her with a wariness for anyone who took too strong an interest in her capabilities.
Angela Torres met Apollo quite unexpectedly as a young woman while on duty at St. Agathaâs Teaching Hospital. She knew him then only as âDr. Andrew Harperâ, a highly respected medical consultant who specialized in experimental medical treatments for terminal patients. The first time they bumped into each other, Angie was not impressed. Dr. Harper had a reputation as a charmer, but she had too much ambition and self-respect to play the ânookie-nurseâ with any of the doctors on call, especially not with one who was only visiting for the year. Despite her low key hostility, Apollo found Angieâs no-nonsense demeanor quite endearing, and reluctantly the two developed a warm working relationship. As the pair spent more time together, that bond blossomed into something more, and before long Angie realized she was pregnant. Marriage wasnât exactly in the cards for Apollo, but he tried to make assurances to Angie that he would be there for her and their child. When Apollo revealed his true identity however, she was distraught. Wanting nothing more to do with him, Angela did her best to cut âAndrew Harperâ out of her life; including transferring to a different hospital. She did not see the god again until she was in labor with Maya; there were complications. It was Apollo who stepped in to intervene on their behalf, saving both Angela and their daughter. While the romantic spark never recovered between the two, that day solidified an understanding that has allowed Apollo to be a part of his daughterâs life.
Unlike many demigods, Maya grew up basking in the warm attentions of her godly parent, visiting him virtually every weekend of her very normal childhood. She doesnât really recall when she learned about her fatherâs godhood, but considering the box full of drawing from kindergarten featuring her father pulling a chariot with the sun hitched on back across the sky, it was early. Soon after, her mother married Darren, giving her a permanent father figure in her life, Mayaâs bond with Apollo remained strong. Darren was a nice man, but he wasnât her father, and as the Torres family expanded, Maya began to feel increasingly out of place. Because of that, and her premature knowledge, Maya began her instruction at Legacy Academy fairly early in the 4th grade. It may have only been a coincidence that her half-brother Mateo was born the same year.
Growing up, Maya was always a daydreamer, and never practical enough for her motherâs liking. While Maya loves her mother, the pair have never truly understood one another, Maya being so laid back and artistic, while her mother has always been driven and ambitious. For years, Angela has been pushing Maya toward a career in medicine, and while Maya has taken those classes at Legacy to appease her mother, she has no intention of pursuing that path. This tension has only grown worse as Mayaâs gotten older, and pushed her even farther toward the more supportive arms of Apollo. The only thing the pair does agree on, is their apprehension of Mayaâs visions. As sheâs grown older, the visions have become longer, more detailed, and exceptionally more painful. Maya has no desire to be an oracle, or tied down to any powerful demigod organization looking to exploit her âgiftsâ. Besides one of her visions killing her, one of Mayaâs greatest fears is being put in a position where she canât say no. Currently, her plan after the Agon and finishing Legacy is to travel the country, painting as she goes, and possibly entering into a college program for Digital Design. A lot of that rides on the Agon though, and her ability the win the funds for this vision of freedom.

RELATIONSHIP WITH GODLY PARENT:
Maya is extremely close with her father Apollo (or Andy as he often insists on being called), not just because of their similar warm and open personalities, but also because of Maya's strained relationship with her mother. Apollo is everything her mother is not, supportive of her dreams, spontaneous, and willing to listen.
Maya is in virtual constant contact with her father via text, and generally sees him at least once a week.
HOBBIES:
Painting
Music
Hiking
Lazing at the Beach
AMBITIONS:
In her heart of hearts, Maya wants to be an artist, traveling along the coast gypsy style without attachments; free to paint and go where she pleases. It's a dream that has never sat well with her more practical minded mother, who would much rather she went to school for nursing in order to lead a very normal, very human lifestyle. While Maya isn't looking to lead any armies into battle, or fight off monsters, she is unwilling to to suppress her heritage, or deny who she truly is. But even her minimalist version of freedom takes money, and you can't make a living as an artist without some connections, making the Argo a viable option. It was her recent prophetic dreams however, that has led Maya to enter in earnest. There's a pit in her stomach, a feeling that she needs to be there.
FEARS:
-Being stuck in a lifestyle she hates, because it is practical.
-Snakes; those suckers really freak her out.
STRENGTHS
Premonitions: Whether she hates them or not, Maya is a surprisingly powerful oracle, catching clear glimpses of the future that warn of danger when she cares to dissect them. This rare gift makes her a powerful, if unreliable, addition to the team.
Archery: While Maya is not as familiar with a bow as some of her siblings, Maya is still a solid shot in a pinch, and it is her combative weapon of choice.
Medical Training: Maya is in Legacy's gateway to nursing track, leaving her with a higher level of knowledge regarding the human body, emergency medicines, and first-aid/CPR.
WEAKNESSES
Physically Weak: While Maya is more athletic than the average human, she doesn't have the insane physicality or enhanced strength and durability that many other demigods enjoy.
Migraines: Maya's oracle premonitions have the potential to be very useful, but physically they are draining, and leave her with skull splitting migraines that can be pretty debilitating.
Everyone knows Maya's a bit of a partygirl, and if someone's in the know about that scene at Legacy, Maya's the one to ask. She has the sunny personality that makes her friends with pretty much everybody, leaving her few enemies, but not a lot of truly close friends either. Maya also has a reputation for being something of a beach hippie, reliable only in that you can find her near the water.
