Introduction

- Roleplay -

There are eight pirates, all of whom are under the leadership of a woman named Valem, that have been living and surviving in the monster-filled world of Os'Roth. They were told about a key that opens a chest with a goblet that contains a map to an island which has said to be be home to an old man. He will tell anyone worthy enough where the artifact of Lucifer is hidden. The artifact is supposed to contain so much power that it gives anyone who weilds it unimaginable power. Valem hopes to gain this power so that she might return to world to its original state of being tranquil and calm.

Ranks

First Mate - A pirate crew sometimes had this position as the captain's right-hand man and the one who would assume his role if he were killed in battle or could no longer perform his duties. This was often considered the job of a lieutenant in a regular navy, and most pirate crews chose a quartermaster instead of a First Mate.

Quartermaster - Out of their distrust of dictatorial rule, pirates of the Golden Age placed a large portion of the captain's traditional role and power into the hands of an elected quartermaster who became second-in-command and almost a co-captain through his representing the best interests of the crew. As a foreman, he was in charge of maintaining order, distributing rations and supplies, delegating work, and guarding and dividing plunder. In fighting, the quartermaster decided what ships were worth it and often led any boarding party, ultimately deciding what loot to keep. When discipline or punishment was necessary, only he could give it, but even then it was with the agreement of the captain or the vote of the pirate crew.

Boatswain - This position may be compared to the modern chief petty officer. A ship of any size would require the boatswain to oversee several junior officers who would share his responsibility for the crew's morale and work efficiency as well as the maintenance and repair of the hull, rigging, lines, cables, sails, and anchors.

Gunner - A gunner would be the leader of any separate group manning the artillery. His special skill would be in aiming, but he would oversee the four to six men required to take the gun through the steps of loading, aiming, firing, resetting, and swabbing for the next load. He would also work to ensure the gun crew's safety in avoiding dangerous overheating or excessive recoiling of the weapon. A master gunner would help to coordinate the timing and accuracy of the individual crews, especially when a broadside was ordered.

Powder Monkey - This term was first used in the British Navy for the very young men who made up most gun crews in the 17th century. In contrast to a pirate officer who was elected, these poor souls were forced to perform what was some of the most dangerous work on the ship. They were harshly treated and rarely paid, and if they avoided being mortally wounded in their service, desertion was probably as attractive as having very little hope of being promoted in the pirate crew.

Carpenter - There could probably be no more highly regarded artisan in a pirate crew when your life and livelihood depended on the soundness of the wood around and beneath you. A person in this apprenticed trade would use their skill to not only repair battle damage to masts, yards, hatches, and the hull, but to keep the ship's leaky seams in check with wooden plugs and oakum fibers. He would often have separate quarters combined with a workspace. Each carpenter would usually have an assistant in apprenticeship.7

Surgeons, Cooks - Yet another highly valued position, surgeons would often be grabbed from crews of captured ships, although they would not be ordinarily be asked to sign the articles. He would be expected to deal with colds, fevers, or sexual diseases with an assortment of mercurial medicines or other current treatments, and the carnage of battle often required amputations in hopes of saving the wounded.

Cooper - If a pirate captain was fortunate enough to have a prosperous career, perhaps he could afford the services of a cooper, a barrel maker. Most everything not in a crate or canvas bag was in a barrel. Using steel hoops and strong wood, the cooper would make containers to keep gunpowder dry, food free of pests, and water and spirits from leaking into the bilge. With a changing environment and the constant shifting of the cargo, the hoops and staves of the barrels required constant upkeep to remain intact and tight.

Musicians - Those who could play drums, bagpipes, trumpets, accordions, fiddles, and other instruments were so well liked that they escaped torture if captured by pirates. With entertainment at a premium on most uneventful days at sea, they would be expected to play a jig to dance to, lead a shanty for work tempo, or provide dinner music. Musicians would usually play prior to and during a battle, blaring out martial tunes, nautical favorites, or simple loud noise to inspire the crew.

Blacksmith - A blacksmith is a person who creates objects from wrought iron or steel by forging the metal; that is, by using tools to hammer, bend, and cut. They produce objects such as gates, grilles, railings, light fixtures, furniture, sculpture, tools, agricultural implements, decorative and religious items, cooking utensils, and weapons.

Nathan felt a stir in his chest as the captain stroked his cheek followed very quickly by a lead ball in his stomach when she shoved him away. Ah, the captain. The beauty of a porcelain doll coupled with the cruelty of a jagged bed of glass. Nathan was familiar with women swooning for him just as often as they rejected him. Valem had that unique gift of doing both at the same time. Maybe that's what drew Nathan to her in the way she did. Keeping what they both wanted just at arm's reach. He couldn't have her and it was killing him while it kept him going at it again time after time. He let out a soft sight as he turned around to, picking up the second sack of loot in one hand and slinging the other over his shoulder with the other. He turned around quickly on the spot when the captain came bursting out of her quarters and made a beeline for him. A thousand thoughts went through his head as he tried to figure out what was wrong. Had those bastard in the backroom put up fake goods to gamble with? Did she decide to just deck him for being forward? These and every other idea he had went right out the window when she reached up, grabbed his face and kissed him. Time seemed to stop as he didn't know what to do, not even sure if he should kiss her back. Before he came to any conclusion, she pulled away and stormed right back into her room, leaving Nathan to just stand there like he'd just been slapped for no reason. Seconds ticked by before his brain finally came up with a response. "Wow."

A bright grin crossed his lips as he shook his head, trying to shake off the daze that had suddenly set over him. He raised his voice and said loud enough for Valem. "Didn't take you long to come around." He let out a mirthful laugh as he turned towards the crow's nest, looking up at Nair and the kid. Nathan liked Nair. He was funny without trying, he was a damn master when you put a fiddle in his hands and he only hated his guts a little bit whenever he managed to steal a woman he was wooing in port. Mind you, it was likely he felt the same way. "Oi!" He yelled up at the two, holding up the bag of loot in his hand. "Got a nice catch this time! Consider this your big tip for the month!" He took a step back, swinging the sack at his side like a sling before chucking it up into the ropes where the man and child sat.

Valem Eralia

"Didn't take you long to come around."

Valem rolled her eyes. He could be annoying at times, but the kid had a good heart, and Valem liked that about him. "Oi!" she heard, "Got a nice catch this time! Consider this your big tip for the month!". That was enough to freeze Valem where she stood. She thought Nathan must have been talking about Nair's earlier comment, and she let out an angered huff. Was that all she was to him? Just another of his countless women, of whom he referred to as a 'catch'? Then again, he could be talking about the loot. This peaked her curiosity just enough to make her walk back onto the deck, a puzzled expression on her face. "Catch? What catch are you referring to, boy?", her voice was cold and snake-like, like something you'd hear in your worst nightmare. She didn't often show this side whilst around her crew, but it did come out when she was either deeply offended or super annoyed.

Rat

Rat saw the loot heading in his direction. He jumped up and grabbed the bag with both hands, then landed perfectly on two feet. He shook the bag slightly, then giggled and passed it to Nair. "I reckon it's a good loot" he commented, "Don't often get big loots 'round this time". With another small giggle, he looked down at Nathan, "Treat Valem well, or you'll have me to answer for!". Rat was quite protective of Valem, even though he'd only known her for a short while. He wouldn't want any harm to come to her. He sat down and exhaled deeply, "So, what you thinkin'a doin' with your loot, Nair?" Rat asked, curiosity clear on his face.

Nathan froze on the spot when he heard the less than comforting sound of Valem's cabin door slamming open. Her words were cold and poison coated and as he slowly turned on the spot, she didn't look all that happy either. It was like looking at the devil staring over the shoulder of an angel. He was at a lost of what he could have done wrong this time and it was obvious that her intention wasn't to brutally assault his lips with hers this time though he had a feeling that he'd get a good hit to the head if he didn't tread carefully. Which didn't help much as the first words that left his lips were completely idiotic. "Do you ever feel old calling me 'boy' all the time?" He sighed and put his hands on his hips as he chewed on the inside of his cheek. A few seconds ticked by before he put the pieces together. His eyebrows shot up as he lifted up his hands defensively and took a step back. "Oh, no. No, no, no, no. I-I didn't mean -that-. God, I didn't mean that. I meant... I had a cut for Nair. I would -never- think like that." Nathan calmed down for a moment and suddenly got a wicked thought in his mind. He lowered his hands and stepped towards the captain again, trying to keep a straight face. "And I'm absolutely appalled you'd even think that I'd use that context!" he said as he pointed an accusing finger in her face. "I've done nothing but give, give, give and you're on my case just because you want a reason to be. Is that it, huh?" Of course, Nathan wasn't -really- upset but if he played his cards right, maybe a little convincing guilt trip would get Valem off his back. And hopefully not hate him for it after.

A low growl erupted from Valem's chest as she gripped her hand around the handle of her sword. "Give, give, give? You merely gave me some loot and made me want to kiss you, I'd hardly call that giving. And how do you even-... You know what? Nevermind" she said softly, he whole mood changing in a second or two. She walked up to Nathan until she was only a few centimeters away from him. Valem pressed her cheek against his and whispered a message in his ear. "If you dare stand up to me infront of the crew, I'll cut your man parts off in your sleep, got it?". Before he could reply, she pulled away and nodded the other rest of the crew before turning and walking back into her quarters. A large grin crept onto her face as she replayed the memory over and over in her head, "You never lose it, not ever".

((Sorry, it's a bit short)).

Nair thought about it and smiled, “I’ll tell you a secret, Rat. Many’ll say use your money on whores and such; however, that’s too easy. It’s more fun to use your loot to make you seem rich, in order to seduce the higher class.” Nair nodded to himself, though he quickly remembered that he was talking to a young boy. “You’ll understand in time. Until then, I’d recommend you find yourself a nice rapier. If you don’t learn to fight properly, you won’t live long enough to get some of this for yourself. I’ve got a spare you can use, and considering it’s my duty to protect you I’ll teach you how to use it.” Nair was speaking nonchalantly by this point. He was actually looking forward to this new duty.

“I’d like that,”
Rat replied.

“Do you play any instruments?”
Nair asked, changing the subject.

“No, not really.”

“Well then I’ll teach you that, too.”

Nair returned to his violin, though he kept his ear out for the drama below. When he heard the Captain’s voice again, he listened. “Rat, climb up to the crow’s nest. We’ll probably be shipping out soon, and we’ll need a lookout.” Rat nodded and started his climb. Nair put the strap holding his violin around his neck and rolled off his point of safety, starting a free fall, until grabbing a rope and swinging safely to the deck. Nodding to Nathan, he said “You know...She threatened my meat and potatoes earlier today too. I'm having trouble figuring out if she's running out of threats, or has an odd fetish.” Nair laughed, then added, "Smoke and a drink in the crow's nest tonight to christen the voyage? My treat."

Octavia merely huffed at Nair and his lecherous ways, not even caring he could see down her shirt. That's one reason she wore two. But when her sister came out a kissed Nathan, she was at a loss for words. She knew her sister was bold but that was sudden. Poor Octavia's heart nearly gave way. One hand rested over her chest as she felt her heartbeat return. She shook her head. Nair's music was a perverted as he was.

Walking over the side of the boat that faced the village, she reached into her shirt and removed a letter. It was from her least favorite person in the world and she frowned. She vaguely wondered what that bastard wanted to do with her. She opened the letter and began to read, her eyes widening as she kept going. As she finished reading, her hand that gripped the rail was white and shaking. In fact, her healthy tan was a near pasty white. She needed somewhere to vent and someone to scream at. So she fled into her room, dropping the horrid letter as she went, hoping it would hit the water and be left behind.

A look of utter defeat crossed Nathan's face as the captain walked away. She didn't really make any good points nor even try but there was no denying she won. She wanted to thus she did. Nathan let out another sad little sigh as he bowed his head and let his arms fall comically to this side. "Glad we had this talk..." he said with a slight crack in his voice before she walked back into her cabin again. Geesh. Talk about mixed signals. Kissing him out of the blue one minute and threatening his manhood the next. That was the captain for you... "She's going to be the death of me," he muttered as he lifted his head again and reached up to adjust his headband. "Try counting out what's in the bag before you get mad at me again!" he shouted in a somewhat stern voice just loud enough for her to hear before Nair plopped down next to him from the netting.

“You know...She threatened my meat and potatoes earlier today too. I'm having trouble figuring out if she's running out of threats, or has an odd fetish. Smoke and a drink in the crow's nest tonight to christen the voyage? My treat."

"Hehe. If she's into that sort of thing, maybe I should consider myself lucky she only brutally assaulted my face this time. And please never use that metaphor ever again. You're going to ruin dinner for me. Again." He turned and pointed a finger in the musician's face. "And you better not be talking like that in front of the little pipsqueak. As much as I'd love to see him get a few mental scars, the captain seems real soft on the tyke and I wouldn't be surprised if those threats became very, very real." When he offered the drink and smoke, he nodded once with a growing smile on his lips. "Sounds like a plan. God knows we're going to need it to get these get rid of these mental scars." He said these last two words as he turned his head towards Valem's cabin, raising his voice a little to make sure she heard. He let out a little sigh as he looked back to Nair and put his hands in his pockets. "She is... something," he muttered, making especially sure to keep his voice down so only Nair could hear him. No point in another interrogation from the captain on the meaning of words.

Nair laughed, “That she is. I have a feeling this will be a voyage to remember.” Nair looked up, half for no reason, half to check on the boy, Rat, and his climb. The musician found Rat just as the kid was climbing into the nest. Although it was far away, Nair could have sworn that the boy was grinning one of the largest grins he’d ever seen. The first nest climb was an accomplishment, for sure. Nair could remember his vividly. It was the first time you ever really felt more a part of a ship, less a passenger.

“The captain wants me to ‘protect him,’ whatever that means,” Nair said, putting air quotes over “protect him” with his fingers. “I figure I’ll teach him how to fight, and how to play an instrument, and in a few years if he’s still around I’ll teach him how to drink and get a girl.” Nair got a thoughtful look on his face, “I’m not worried though. He grew up on the street, so he’s probably heard worse than anything I have to say. Besides, we’re pirates! Drinkin’, Sailin’, Fuckin’ and Cussin’ should be commonplace. Freedom, my friend.” As Nair was talking, he noticed Octavia walk off deck in a huff. Curiosity got the better of him.

“I’ll see you tonight. In the meantime, keep a sharp eye on your master of ceremonies. We have enough females on this ship as it is,” Nair laughed and started to walk away, waving. A few turns later and he was standing outside of Octavia’s quarters. The door was shut, and for a few moments he was considering just walking away and letting this one be. Still, she was a part of the crew, the crew looked out for each other, and while she obviously didn’t care much for Nair that didn’t change the fact that she seemed upset and could possibly use a conversation. If anything, yelling at him would help. Nair didn’t mind people yelling at him, considering he usually, admittedly, deserved it. With a sigh, Nair knocked on her door. “Um…” It was unusual for Nair to be at a loss for words, but this was also an unusual situation for him. “Is everything alright?”

Inside the small room, her already torn blanket was shredded, mostly in grief. Her small bed was a mess and in the middle a shaking Octavia. In her hands was her raiper, a small reminder of her newfound loss of Beast and her new place in the bandit colony. The small rat she was taken in was watching her, with almost sad eyes. It merely laid itself on its owner, offering her a small comfort.

Her eyes, which were hazy and dazed, cleared when she heard a knock. She slowly sat up, and turned as, surprisingly, Nair's voice floated through the door. She turned to the rat on her shoulder and gave a small sad smile. She quickly moved her violin and flute from their hiding spot in the walls, safe from her destruction before she wandered over to the door and opened it, not even bothering with the tears that still tracked down her face or the state of her room. "Life is life, I suppose..." She muttered quietly, looking at the bandages that peeked out at her from under her sleeves and the bloodier ones under her shirt. "What do you need, Nair..?"

Tears. Damn. Despite his somewhat of a man whore status, attempting to find companionship at every port (though he really only went after the higher class women, not the dirty girls found at sailor bars), Nair had a soft spot for women, especially when they cry. Seeing Octavia in the state this state was a particular humanizing moment for her, in Nair’s mind. In order to keep himself from ever making any moves on any of the women aboard the ship, Nair basically did his best to change them from women into sexless beings who just happened to have breasts and such. It was weird, but it worked. But her tears reminded him that she was, in fact, a woman. Her room was a mess, and she had multiple bandages on, so it was quite clear that she had not had a good time lately.

After a few moments of silence, Nair spoke, “Life is life. That’s why I left mine and went to sea. Life can’t touch you on a ship like this one.” Nair’s hand was running along the wood of her door frame as he said it. Cheering someone up was hard. Nair usually turned to two things to cheer himself up, music and alcohol, but this didn’t seem like a time to whip out either his violin or his flask. Still, he had put himself in this situation, which meant he had to at least try and cheer her up. “I know you don’t think much of me, but the people in my head have told me that I’m an excellent listener.” It was a bad joke, but sometimes, especially when people are upset, it was the bad jokes that made them laugh. “And if fit helps, I’ll probably drink enough tonight to cause me to forget what you have to say, so in me you have both listener and one-hundred percent secrecy,” another bad joke, but hell, that’s all that Nair seemed to be able to come up with at this point. The point was that he was doing his best, which was all he could really do.

It was then that Nair spotted her violin and flute, and, almost in a burst of excitement, walked past her to get a better look, though he didn’t touch because he didn’t particularly like it when people touched his instruments without his permission. Both instruments seemed in great condition, and with a smile on his face Nair looked back at Octavia, “You should play with me sometime. I’ve not had someone to duet with in a while.”

Octavia blinked at Nair before the smallest hint of a smiles appeared on her face. Trust Nair, the man whore of the ship, to make her smile. She started to see the man that reminded her of her bane in life a little differently. No longer was he a cruel man that only slept with women for fun but he had a heart, though she still hated his whore tendencies. Nothing on the earth, save the moron stopping, could make that change.

She sat on the destroyed bed and carefully, as if they were the most precious things in the world, held both of her instruments. "I've heard you play Nair... I certainly can't compare..." She murmured softly against the neck of the of the stringed instrument. She sadly and hesitantly stashed them, a spot on her small bed now open. Honestly, if what he said was true, then she could vent, cry and scream at him as much as she needed. The thought alone that on this large ship, someone was willing to listen, apart from Drake, who was more like a stern older brother than anything else.

As she waited for Nair to make a move, she picked at the bloodied bandage that was wrapped around most of her midsection and torso. She had to blink back tears as the memory of how they came to be flashed through her mind. She couldn't help the small sob that tore through her throat nor the blunt nails that dug into her arms as she fought back the sadness and utter despair. Her entire body shook before the other's eyes.

This was more than Nair bargained for, but he was in too deep at this point to back out. Giving her a quick look over, the bandages she was wearing were obviously fresh. The good doctor must just done this, so if he released her then there was nothing to worry about. Still, whatever amount of physical pain she was in didn't help the emotional pain she was going through, Nair noted.

"Music is the only thing I took with me from my old life," Nair said as he walked over and sat on the bed next Octavia, trying his best to not be awkward. This was the most vulnerable he'd ever seen her. When she sobbed, it sort of threw Nair for a loop again. It was clear she needed someone to just vent into, by this point. Or maybe even a cliche shoulder to cry on.

Tentatively, Nair reached an arm out and over her shoulder, resting it on her opposite shoulder, trying to be comforting. "It'll all be alright, once we're all good and drunk and out to sea," Nair smiled.

Octavia stiffened when the arm wrapped around her shoulders but forced herself to remember who it was. It was Nair, someone that was a part of her crew. It wasn't any of the filth that she lived with. He wouldn't hurt her. She visibly relaxed into his embrace.

"I... I hope so... I just want to get extremely drunk and forget that stupid letter..." She muttered, hesitantly curling into Nair's side. She, almost shyly, rested her head on his shoulder. What surprised her was the fact she was so comfortable with him. She usually hated him. But he was offering her something she desperately needed. Maybe she could trust him...

She grabbed her bag and pulled out a plain bottle, filled with whiskey. She unscrewed the top and took a heavy swig. She curled back up into Nair, her inhibitions already lowered from her limited drinking. "I mean, who the hell does he think he is...? Sendin' me a fucking letter, boldly claiming shit like that..." She muttered, nursing the bottle, drinking more and more.

Nair almost regretted placing his arm around Octavia when he felt her stiff up, but just as he was about to remove his arm she leaned into him, getting more comfortable. It was surprising, a bit, coming from her. Nair half expected to get slapped just for touching her. At the mentioning of a letter, it was easy to figure out that something someone had written to her had gotten her this upset, but Nair didn't have much else to go off of. To be quite frank, he didn't know much about her life outside of the ship. It was something about bandits, maybe? Quickly he found himself digging through his memory looking for anything he might know about her, but found his memory to be, unsurprisingly, full of holes. Every now and then Nair has a moment of realization on the amount of alcohol he drinks, and this was one of those times, as he quickly realized he knew next to nothing on just about everyone on the ship.

After a moment, Octavia leaned up and pulled a bottle of whiskey from a bag before leaning back into Nair, who tightened his hold on her, feeling more comfortable now that alcohol was involved. He was slightly amazed by the amount she was drinking, making her even more vulnerable, and had to constantly remind himself that he needed to be a gentleman, that this was different. Still, he couldn't let her drink alone, so he pulled out his flask and finished what was left in it. Having been drinking since he got onto the ship, he wasn't exactly sober, but at the same time this whole ordeal had been quite sobering. With a smooth gesture, Nair took the bottle from Octavia's hand and took a large drink himself, buying time while he picked his next words. Dare he ask about this letter? Maybe try and cheer her up more? In the end, he went with asking about the letter. She mentioned it twice, so there was obviously something about it that she wanted to get off her chest and vent about. "Mind if I ask what fucking letter, and what boldly claimed shit?" Nair handed the bottle back to her as asked, tightening his hold on her comfortingly.

Octavia blinked as her bottle was taken, a soft whine escaping her throat. Her whole demeanor changed, to upset to depressed with the disappearance of her bottle. She quickly perked up when it was returned, nuzzling the warm shirt next to her.

"Mind if I ask what fucking letter, and what boldly claimed shit?" Nair handed the bottle back to her as asked, tightening his hold on her comfortingly.

"That letter! The one laying out there, looking so friggin' innocent! It seals my demise in the bandit community..." She muttered the last bit, shaking slightly. "That ruthless bastard of a bandit leader decided that the moment I return to the camp, I am his bride! His friggin' wife!" She huffed, pouting slightly. She took another swig and pushed back, making them both fall onto the bed. She laid on him, face to face. Her breath ghosted over his mouth. "I don't wanna be his wife... I don't wanna lose to him..." She whimpered.

Re: Legend of Os'Roth - A Pirate's Dream

I wouldn't mind that. I've never been a part of a successful pirate RP, and it always disappoints me when they fail. I'd happily take this 1x1.

Re: Legend of Os'Roth - A Pirate's Dream

We might as well. I like this little thing. And if worse comes to worse, we can take it to PM and continue.

Re: Legend of Os'Roth - A Pirate's Dream

Haha alright, I just noticed it was only the two of us. But what the hell, we can keep going and if everyone else wants to they can too.

Re: Legend of Os'Roth - A Pirate's Dream

I thought this thing was getting off to a pretty decent start. Is everyone bouncing? Letting this one sink?

Re: Legend of Os'Roth - A Pirate's Dream

I realize that I've been calling the Crow's Nest the Eagle's Nest. I am not a Nazi, and I apologize.

Re: Legend of Os'Roth - A Pirate's Dream

Sure, we got plenty of room. Just find an open character role on the introduction page and submit a character.

Re: Legend of Os'Roth - A Pirate's Dream

Hey do you guys have room for one more player? I'd love to join! I'm just finishing with reading through the IC thread.

Re: Legend of Os'Roth - A Pirate's Dream

Re: Legend of Os'Roth - A Pirate's Dream

The crew is formed. Make your way to the ship, where everyone else is.

So should we just include a bunch of NPC's on the ship?

Re: Legend of Os'Roth - A Pirate's Dream

Okay question is the crew formed because I thought it said that Valem was looking for a new crew but in the second it stated her wondering where her crew went can someone clarrify it Im confused

Re: Legend of Os'Roth - A Pirate's Dream

Character reserving is not aloud. First come first serve. The pictures, like stated on the introduction page, are only a rough guideline of what your character should look like.
