Life, After

Life, After

North America is now ruled by polygamists. They have set up the Father Church, the center of all the world. If you go against them, you die. If you displease them, you die. If you do anything they don't like, you die. Basically, keep them happy. (FULL!)

Introduction

Abortion is one of the most controversial topics in the history of the world, and one that sparked the war that changed so many people’s lives. Even after the Life Laws were put in place, people still tried to find ways to get rid of the little “troubles” that seemed to occur. Of course, illegal abortions can be deadly, so many people avoid them, but illegal clinics still exist. The Life Laws were put in place by the Father Church, the church that saved us after the War of Life vs. Choice, and are as follows;
1. No woman shall terminate a pregnancy under any circumstances.
2. No woman shall engage in sexual activity before marriage. Any woman caught doing so is open to any punishment including death.
3. All babies born and are unwanted will be given to the Sterile Camps for care until age 15, at which time their fate will be determined.
4. The Sterile Camps are to be run by women who have been found unable to have children. Anyone harboring a woman who cannot have children is punishable by death.
5. At age 15, children who are able to work or be married will be so, and those who are unable to work or be married will be killed or left to work at the Sterile Camp.
6. No birth control of any kind is to be used.
7. Sex is a holy act, and should be treated as one.
8. Men may have no fewer than 3 wives, but no more than 8. There is no exception.
9. Men who are found to have less than 3 wives before they turn 45 are considered to be crooked and will be sent to work with the women ate the Sterile Camp.
10. These rules are final, unchangeable, and have no exceptions.

That is the world we live in, a world that is run by the polygamist church. Since the War of Life vs. Choice, many people have been put to death. There isn’t a soul who remembers the Liberated Times, but we read about them in History class at school. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, your grandparents will tell you stories that their grandparents told them.

Another difference in the times is that North America is divided into four states, which are divided into statuses. Camp State, where the Sterile Camps are spread out and lived in, fifteen statuses in all, one for every age. Up State, which is divided based on the polygamist colony you live in, and is for the rich families and their servants. Lower State, which is where the servants are from, and where the working districts are, along with most of the illegal abortion clinics are. Finally, there is the Father State, where the Father Church is. We only go there for important holy days, or when a woman from our colony is put up for marriage.

I suppose that is enough about the way our little world is set up. Maybe you would like to know more about me. My papa is a rich polygamist, and he has 4 wives. His first wife is not spoken to or of so we consider Lisa his first, and she gave him 3 of my 12 siblings. His second wife, Laura, is Lisa’s little sister, and gave him 5 of my siblings. Then there is Belinda, who has had 2 and is expecting a third, and then my mother, Rosemary. I’m her only child, and she would like to keep it that way. The only siblings I know are Laura’s five children, Jeremy, Grady, Gregg, Ruth and Sara. The rest, excepting of course the unborn child, are either married or banished. Bess, my father’s first wife’s only child, was found sterile and we haven’t seen her in years.

My father’s name is Lyndon Briar, and he is a very handsome man. He is tall and slender, with salt and pepper hair and blue eyes. His nose is slightly upturned and he always looks like he knows what he’s talking about, even when he doesn’t. My name is Elizabeth Briar, and I wouldn’t know it before I started recounting my adventures in my diary, but my life was about to take an unexpected turn, and I was in for one big adventure.

I raised one eyebrow in confusion at her strange language, then smiled. "You can babble all you want. I don't mind." I was being sincere. I looked toward the horizon and noticed the sun starting to set. "Come, we must get ready to leave. We have only a few hours," I hurried toward my home, the home I would soon abandon for good...

Amanda nodded and followed the girl to her room, where she didn't hesitate to take off the dress and out on her original clothes. She grabbed her weapons and Placed them neatly in the holders under her skirt before putting on her under sleeves. She was tying her over sleeves on when she looked back at Elizabeth, "You must make sure your have everything you need. There is no need for provisions, i shall supply them. but if you feel you must go a head and bring some put pack lightly. We will need to move quickly and heavy luggage will only slow us down." She said, warping and twisting her hair into place before placing the gold band in to hold it in place. She smoothed her feathers and beads into her hair. There was not time for tradintion at this point, she would make up for it when they were able to rest tonight. she paused and turned towards Elizabeth, reaching under her skirt and pulling out a long dagger and holding the but end towards her. "Keep this with you and well hidden. Your going against the church so you'll need it." she said, still holding the weapon towards her.

Brooklyn walked home, keeping her head down so there was no chance of people thinking she looked too excited. They might ask questions, and Brooklyn's a bad liar. She gets home without confrontations, which is good. She goes up to her room and goes through her things, trying to decide exactly what to take. She took out a bag, and put a couple of outfits in it, and a favorite book of hers. She puts in an old doll from her childhood, and can't think of anything else she'd need, besides food. She wouldn't be able to take much, unless no one's home. She goes down to the kitchen and grabs as much as she can and puts it in the bag as well, and zips it up. It would see suspicious to be carrying around a bag of food and clothing.

Abe blinked at the question that was asked of him, it was true he did have the key to the church but it wasn't cause he was allowed to. Then the girl with the white hair spoke

"It would be most pleasing if you could, easpa.....I mean, bishop." she said

He had heard that language before had even read it now he knew why the guards were on alert today. He smiled as the girls walked away.

"They're trying to keep it secret but I know what they're up to can't say I blame them" he said quietly. "What am I talking about this is the perfect chance for me to get away from all of this. To finally do something for myself, and totally piss my father off and the people would loose confidence in their venerable Bishop if his own son ran off to join the Pagans" he thought to himself.

"This is perfect" he said as he went to prepare for the trip of his life.

Mary was waiting for a response when she was plowed into by someone, she watched in horror as the basket she was holding went flying through the air.

"Oh no!" she cried

But she watched as the man that had run into her caught it with ease, nothing spilled and Mary sat there with her mouth agape with shock.

"I-I'm so S-sorry. i didn't see you. i was being foolish and focusing on the ground. Let me help you up." he said reaching out his hand to help her up.

She took the offered hand and stood up "T...thank you" she said shyly, he was older but only by a few years and he had a shock of white hair and amber colored eyes. Very exotic looking to say the least.

I took the weapon, Hiding it under my skirt. I looked out the window, and nodded. "You go get Brooklyn and go to the church, I'll meet you there." I go to gather my things, letting her out the back with the same black cloak I had let her use before. I grabbed a bag and put one other outfit in it, sneaking into the nursery and grabbing my little brother. "Lyle shh, you must keep quiet," I said as I rocked the little baby and set him in my bag. I'd leave him in another colony with a young wife and hope they would take care of him. I ran out the back at hearing my aunt and went straight to the church, waiting in the back near the door I hoped Abe would let us into. As I waited, I got nervous. Lyle was still sleeping, but if Amanda saw that I had brought him with, she would surely be angry.
After a few moments, I saw two silhouettes in the moonlight, and I prayed that it was Amanda and Brooklyn. I leaned against the door, waiting for Abe and the girls. I was praying that no one would notice that Lyle was concealed in my bag, and that no one would notice we were gone for a few days...at least until we crossed the border of my fathers domain.

Abe slung his pack over his shoulder he hoped he had brought enough supplies with him, he knew that most of the girls coming with him were not as wealthy as he so he made sure he brought some extra food water and money. The guards down the hall form his bed chambers were already passed out from being drunk with ale and wine a gift from the son of Bishop.

But he stopped in his tracks when he heard a door come open "Able... where are you going at this time of night?" said a quiet voice from behind.

Abe knew the voice very well something like the sound of the coo of a dove or leaves rustling in the breeze. He turned to see his mother in her night clothes with a slight smile on her face. Abe swallowed hard as she walked slowly up to him, she always moved so quietly and looked like she was floating.

"Well your finally doing it, I was wondering when you would try to leave" she said as she reached up and brushed her hand against his cheek.

Abe felt a knot in the pit of his stomach he hated doing this to her, he wished she could go with him but that wasn't possible. "Mother... I'm sorry but I can't..." he stuttered.

She smiled gently at him "I know son don't worry your secret is safe with me... you were always different Able so Im happy that your leaving, becuase I fear what would happen to you if you were to stay. Now go before the guards come to she said hugging him and shoving him ahead of her.

He smiled and nodded back, then headed to where he was to meet the girls, he came around the corner of the church where he saw Elizabeth standing waiting for the Pagan girl he thought. He walked up to her "Elizabeth I'm going too" he said.

I smiled, looking up at him. "You are?" I bit my bottom lip and looked down. "That is fine with me, but I hope Amanda won't mind..." I sighed, shifting my pack. I didn't expect a newborn to be quite so heavy..."Able...don't tell anyone...but I...I couldn't leave him...I promise I'm giving him away but...my aunt would have given him to the Camps after mother died...I can't give him to that fate..." My eyes pleaded with him to understand, but I didn't think he would. I was certain he would tell Amanda who would make he return him to his crib, and his fate...

Abe's eyes grew wide as he glanced into the pack, he saw a newborn babe asleep in the bag.

He understood her reasoning no one would want to be sent to the camps... "No don't give him away... it you do it will tip off someone and we wight get caught, then he'd end up in the camps anyway becuase no one would take in a child that had been around an outlaw" he said.

A feeling of protection came over Able that he had never felt in his life "I won't tell the other's but they will find out as soon as he wakes, if they have a problem with it then they can take it up with me... I'll protect you and him. But we'll have to come up with a way to feed him... we don't want him to starve" he said. He thought for a moment and remembered some sort of mineral drink that his mother had given one of his younger sibling when she was unable to feed her properly.

"Once we get out of this district and into another I'll find a shop that sells something my mother used once. Don't worry about the money I will pay for it" he had more then enough with him.

Amanda had gone to Brooklyn's house and slipped a note int her room telling where they were meeting before heading to the church herself. When she saw Abel she went to pull her hood down until she heard him say he was coming. She was shocked. She removed her hood to get a better look at him, "you can come if we can trust you. now we have to hurry." she said, listening carefully for any other noise. Her golden eyes glowing as she looked Abel over.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Malkolm shook his head, "No need to thank me, I-it was my fault anyways." he said as she brushed herself off. "If there is anything i can do to make it up to, just tell me. I'm stationed here for a while." he said, handing her back the dish and loaf of bread. He looked a the sky, "It's getting dark." he thought to himself, looking back down at the girl. "W-would you mind if I-i walked you to your destination. I-it is getting very dark." he said, fumbling with his scarf.

I felt a sudden rush of relief and wanted to hug him. I held myself back, and settled for a smile. "Thank you, Abe. I'll never be able to repay you for this, I'm sure," I closed the pack again, leaving it opened just a bit so he could breathe. I looked back toward the two silhouettes, now growing larger. "Okay, I understand that they are trying not to draw attention to themselves, but can't they move a little faster?" I asked to no one in particular, fidgeting anxiously. "Maybe Brooklyn is just nervous to go with Amanda..." I mused, pushing a piece of hair out of my face.

Amanda looked at Elizabeth with confusion, "I'm already here, were waiting for Brooklyn." she said, she returned her gaze to Abel and sighed. "Oh well, i just wish you would have told s us earlier, there nothing more i hate then being unprepared for something like this." she said, squeezing her temples as she did.

I looked around the building. "Was she waiting by the tree? It's unlike her to be late..." I mused, fingering the cross around my neck quietly. "I'm going to get her if she's not here shortly," I decided, sighing. The moon was nearly halfway through the sky, and we were supposed to have left by now. "Come on, Brooklyn," I whispered to myself. "I'm not leaving without you..."

Brooklyn grabbed her bag and left her house undetected. Then she started running, like a madwoman, trying to get to the tree. She couldn't be left behind. She finally gets there. "I'm so sorry! I lost track of time!" she said, in between gasps of air, ecstatic that they haven't left already.

Brooklyn nods once. She was born ready. Now she wouldn't have to worry about being one of many wives before she was ready. She wouldn't ever have to worry about having babies if she didn't want to. She was free. She wouldn't ever see this place again, and it was bittersweet.

If we're certain we have everyone, lets go." Amanda said, throwing her hood back up. she closed her eyes, feeling the blow gently on her face, "...And remember Amanda, if you need to come home for anything, go in the direction the wind comes from." she remembered her mother saying, "North Wind, my tribe, my home." She whispered the small prayer, Before moving north. "We won't leave through the towns exit. Well go though here until we reach the edge, once there, there really is no turning back." she said once they were all in an alleyway. She let out a small laugh, "Seven years of running and now i'm going back, i wonder if my family is even still alive."She said softly before continuing north.

I stayed toward the back of the group, hushing the fussing Lyle. God, if you can still hear me, don't let him wake just yet. Let him sleep until we are far enough... I prayed, looking down at my pack. One other outfit, a hunk of cheese, and an apple were all I had brought besides the squirming infant. Was this even the right thing to do? There was no turning back now...

Brooklyn looked out over the land in front of them. She had never expected to ever go out in it. She never expected to have a reason to, because as a small child it's drilled into your head that you should never leave. She was told that there were bad people outside her town, and if she spent too much time with those bad people, she would go to hell. She realized that the people at home would tell their children that she's a bad person now. Would she go to hell? Oh well, she thought, I can worry about that when I'm closer to dieing.

Re: Life, After

Now Abe's gonna use the key for what I'm confused but I want to know exactly whats going on before I make my next post

Re: Life, After

I won't be posting as much for a bit, I have relatives coming in that I hardly ever see.

Re: Life, After

I'll make a male character, but, he may be a pagan as well, or just a runway, or something, idk, i figure it out as i'm filling out the character sheet though.

Re: Life, After

I made a girl character but Im thinking that all of us that have made female characters should think about making a male character as well. Of course depending on the mentality of your character, cause I know some of the characters are not as naive as mine. But I thought it would be nice if Mary had the possibility of a suitor, but I don't like to play the person my character will be paired with. I prefer to make a male character that will be paired with someone else. I just don't like it when someone plays their character and the person they're in a relationship with. I don't know if this alright with you Soren but I'll go ahead and make the other male character and we'll see where it goes from there. I don't want to sound like I'm being pushy or something I'm just throwing an idea out there so we aren't a bunch of girls without any guys.

Re: Life, After

is this only female or can there be male characters because this seems extremely interesting and I have a somewhat good idea for a character

Re: Life, After

Submitted a character, i hope you like her!

Re: Life, After

OH this gives a wonderful idea for a character. hehe

Re: Life, After

You know, I agree. This is -very- intriguing. I like the idea. Good job!

I may just have to slip in a character application!

Re: Life, After

This is a very interesting concept and I think I might make a character if thats alright.
