Doll had grown bored of scribbles on paper. She wanted to do something, to see things. Something had gotten her mind reeling and so she stood from the windowsill, careful as to not wake Zero up. Doll ran down the hall, going to the library where she and Zero spent so much time. On her way there though, the Doctor's office door had been left opened and words were flitting out in angry sentences. "I need it ready by TONIGHT!" He roared, practically a lion warning others in his pride that predators were nearby. Doll watched from the doorway, she had never seen the Doctor show any emotion aside from the display he had put on by hugging Zero when they had arrived. If Doll didn't know any better, she would say that the calm exterior she knew the Doctor to be was a facade. It seemed as though by standing there, Doll realized she could possibly incur his wrath and so she attempted to tip toe away.

"Don't you dare move Ms. Loretta," he pointed to her with one hand, the other still holding the electronic device he had been screaming into. So Doll waited, standing in the doorway as he finished his conversation a bit quieter then before. When he was finished he ushered her inside, telling her to take a seat. Doll nervously sat on the edge of the chair, wound like a rabbit ready to spring should the tide turn. "I heard you had an attack," he spoke quietly, his words soft but his tone pointed. Doll flinched as though he had struck her and looked down, crinkling the fabric of her dress in her hands. "Yes," Doll admitted. "I did."

"Did you remember anything?" He asked. "No, I think more of memory is gone." The Doctor looked up in surprise. He quickly grabbed out his doctor bag, clearly alarmed. While he examined her, Doll continued speaking. "It was-everything came back and then-and then it was just gone again, but I can't remember this week."

"I think your body's natural defense against protecting you from trauma is to somehow lock up these memories in a part of the brain that you can't access." He returned his tools to his bag, pulling out something dreadfully familiar. Doll tensed as he stabbed the needle into her neck, plunging its contents into her body. "If anything changes, tell me immediately. Now run along," he didn't have to tell her twice. As soon as she was freed, Doll ran down the hall to grab the book she wanted from the library. It was among the pile Zero had attempted to give her before the chaos began. The book was exactly where she had left it. Once it was in her clutches, Doll went back to the room, flipping through it to find the picture. Once she had her inspiration she began coloring once more, both her and Zero, sitting on a large red sled.

He began to stir, Doll looked up, sliding off of the windowsill and onto the floor beside him. "Did you sleep well?"

Zero blinked and swallowed then winced. He'd bitten his tongue, no wonder but still his heart threatened to shatter so he moved unthinking to her his hand touched her wrist he brought her into the floor so he could just be sure. Hovered over her his gaze trailed her face, her neck, the left side where he dreamed he'd... Smooth skin nothing there and he sighed heavily relief and calm.

"I'm sorry, I thought I..." He let the words trail off and realized too late he was still over her he drew back. He felt his face heat but refused to meet her gaze. This is getting ridiculous. I'm losing my frickin' mind. He rubbed at his eyes and took another breath, "Need more sleep." He yawned deeply scrubbed his face. Pulled the blanket tighter around his shoulders he couldn't remember having gotten this or was that her? He smiled a little, grateful and he lay back down too comfortable to leave.

Doll was no short of confused when she suddenly rolled over against her will and was pinned beneath Zero. He pulled her sleeve down, inspecting her flesh with a peculiar look in her eyes. Doll blushed, wondering what had suddenly taken over him. "Zero?" Doll questioned. He seemed to realize what he was doing and drew back, allowing Doll to sit up. His explanation was that he needed more sleep and Doll nodded her head in understanding. "Do you wanna lay on the bed?" Doll asked as he hunkered down further in the blanket. He seemed to be perfectly comfortable on the floor, but Doll didn't think it was a good place to fall asleep. She grabbed another blanket from the pile and joined him back on the floor.

"I saw something in this book," Doll reached for the book on the window sill and opened it up to a page where a child was going down a pile of snow on a red sled. "They called it sledding," Doll informed him excitedly, although no doubt Zero already knew of this magnificent sport.

Bed or floor, it didn't really matter. As long as he was close to her Zero wasn't bothered much he especially appreciated her willingness to snuggle up lose on the floor with him with a book. So nostalgic, his chest hurt. He yawned again and curled up closer, her warmth incredibly soothing. He trained his eyes on what she showed and he nodded, "Yes, that's sledding, you do that when it snows and there are hills. It's fun." He almost asked what book she was reading but kept quiet, this was good, very good. If only they'd built a fort, that's what's missing isn't it? Their little roof in their small precious world. Something to house them away from the rest. If he could take her away from all the bad things, he would. If he could take away all her pain, even if he suffered for it he would.

One of them deserved to be happy.

"Can you read to me, Miss Loretta?"

Her gentle voice, such a sweet voice he wanted to fall asleep to. Stay in this moment forever, where his heart was light as the snow touching the glass outside, as warm as the space they shared on the floor, in the folds of the blankets absent of misery, fear, mistrust, hatred, all the bad things that pushed and pulled. They were in their zone. He didn't want to leave their zone. Not for a long time. Not for now.

As expected, Zero knew of sledding. His presence was large, or perhaps his white hair simply drew in the eye. Zero requested that Doll read to him and she nodded her head eagerly at the chance to read. Doll closed the book so that he could see the picture on the front, "The Red Sled. There aren't that many words in it, but the pictures are pretty." She flipped to the front page, the story began with a child dragging her sled up the hill and as she bumbled along, woodland creatures gathered, wanting to ride the sled as well. Most of the text on the pages were onomatopoeia that were mercifully easy to figure out since they were everyday sounds one used in different situations. "The end," Doll closed the book and put it to the side when she had finished. It wasn't a very long read either and since it was mostly pictures it had been pretty quick.

"I made some pictures too," Doll showed him the ones she had spread out on the floor in the sun in case they had to dry. "I'm trying to make my own book," she smiled eagerly, wondering what he would say. If Doll had to say it, she would gladly admit that she liked receiving praise from Zero, it made her inside feel bubbly and made her head feel as though butterflies were flapping their wings in it, which was a good thing, she believed.

The book was too short, had they gotten one with perhaps a chapter or two the story would have lasted. He'd have to wait a little until she got the flow of reading higher level books before they progress to that. Overall her voice made the little tale of a kid on a sled with curious woodland creatures dance off the page. Even without the aid of pretty images he could see it when he closed his eyes, hear the sounds, the crunch of snow, the whisper of the breeze, the little noises animals made, follow the kid in their climb and descent what joys, what simplistic a thing and so fun. It was activities like that he never got the chance to do, maybe it was childish but he secretly wondered what it would be like.

Then he opened his eyes when she spoke of having drawn something. He sat up and took one of the pictures, held it up to the light that filtered through the window. A sun drawn in the corner, sunflowers, a figure with pale hair, him? How cute. There were others, he did the same with the next, held it up to see it at a distance, "Oh, this is Isabel? She looks so young," He chuckled, a sled too with two recognizable figures, himself and her.

"I want to help..." He spoke whisper-soft, "Make your book, we could take pictures of all the things you like, along with your art, put it together, like a scrapbook."

He placed it down beside its companion and turned to meet her regard, a new project they could work on, how exciting. "...If you want to."What kind of book did she want to make? With what he'd suggested she'd have the most optimal space to add whatever she pleased, no limits. Did Loretta have a creative side? It seemed like it, she ceased to amaze.

No. He didn't just want help her make a book. He wanted to save her. He wanted to be able to just, go outside and play with the snow, experience sledding, sledding! Be free, laugh at the wind, enjoy the light that is Loretta without the fear of being attacked, shot down, kidnapped, hurt. Zero petted the top her head, that meant he had to find out what dad was so hell bent over protecting. What is down those dark steps? What discoveries did he make, could it be why he and mom disappeared? Was it something that could plant the seed of fear in even the most powerful of beings? Would it change the world over? What of it did? What if this was used to end them? End their terror? Zero could see a better world, a world of yesterday resurfacing, bright, picking up where it left off.

He saw her in it.

He seemed to like it and this made Doll very happy. "Really?" Doll asked, growing excited. She nodded her head, clearly eager for Zero's assistance. Doll got to her feet and went to the dresser, returning with more paper and crayons. "I'd very much like it if you helped," she sat back down and picked up a crayon, starting on another picture. "What's a scrapbook?" Doll asked, looking up from the picture she had started. He had said something about drawing all of her favorite things, but Doll didn't want the book to only be about her. "We should put in some of your favorite things too!" Doll chirped, turning back to her scribbles. A gentle knock came from the door, Grell poked his head inside. "Almost ready to go?" He asked, clearly talking to Zero. Doll blinked in confusion, where were they going? Was Zero going to be coming back?

"You too," he turned towards the blonde before closing the door and leaving. "Where are we going?" Doll asked, getting to her feet. The blanket fell from her shoulders and she began scrambling around to collect all of her drawings so that she could take them with her. Looks like they would have to save the coloring for later, for now it least, it seemed as though they were going. Curiously, Doll went to one of the drawers to see that it had already been emptied. "Oh! I almost forgot!" Doll pulled the secret diary out of the nook she had last hidden it in. Doll didn't want to keep secrets from Zero though so she held it out to him, "I found this in here, but I didn't want to tell you yet."

Zero nodded, "Yeah. I'd help in whatever Miss Loretta would like. Just say the word." He watched with a little tilt of his head, she must have felt his excitement it shined in her eyes. So adorable. She started on another drawing, asked about scrapbooking.

"It's a book of sorts, you put pictures, writing, tape things in it, whatever you want to collect or keep."

As to what he'd add, aside from literature and pictures of Isabel there wasn't much on his end. Loretta would probably fill it out entirely regardless, this is her book, she could put what she wanted. "If Miss Loretta would like me to add a thing or two, then it's done." Perhaps at the end, one page.

Zero glanced at the door before Grell approached, before he even knocked. He straightened a little, sent him an acknowledging nod. To his question Zero shrugged, too tired to care. He did however stare at the door after Grell closed it.

So Loretta is coming along then? Doc wasn't full of crap. He wouldn't send her away. Smart scientist. Otherwise Zero would have torn his office apart and hell he'd enjoy every second of it.

Jeez, a Villa of all places? They should have relocated to somewhere a little more secure. Couldn't help his paranoia not after their fun little visit from their trigger-happy friends. He gripped around his torso at the memory too fresh in his head, of the panic, rage, that terrible frost coated blindness that for a second, threatened to shatter him.

There was movement, the blanket dropped near him and he reached, caught the soft fabric before it hit at her feet but she was off, rushing around for something.

Then a book, no, diary? Hidden from inside the window seat cover.

"That must have belonged to the kid that lived here before. You could look at it, I doubt anyone would mind." Would Doc mind? Did Doc have a family or something before Zero had stepped foot inside the manor? What happened to them? Not that they ever sat down to talk history, nor would they. Impossible. But still, that would explain why the scientist was open to adopt. Maybe he wanted a family again. He gets it.

But Zero had yet to see Doc as anything but family. That has to be earned, no signed documentation of him being the Atarashi Foster kid was gonna change that. He wasn't sure if it would anytime soon.

Look at them, just like the family he once had, packing their bags, moving all over again. When was that going to end?

He knew when, he knew for certain and there was no other way around it. They had to fix this, no, he had to fix this. Or they would be the rats forever running into other mouse holes, desperately clinging to dreams that held no substance. Always losing control, resorting to more violence because only blood shed would end it. If anything Zero wanted no more of that, if he could help it. There hasn't been any major wars of note that he could recall in the last few decades since the being take-over. Would they have to go through one again? Would humans even have it in them to fight or were their spirits crushed?

"I'll get to packing."

When Zero looked at her he saw hope. No there is spirit, it's shining right there in front of him.

Zero seemed to have the same idea about the journal that Doll did. "That's what I thought," she replied as Zero got to his feet, allowing the blanket to drop. He left, stating that he was going to pack, but seemed to steal one last glance back before shutting the door behind him. Doll gave him a small wave and settled on the bed. Might as well read before they left, who knows how long the drive would take? No one would answer her question as to where they were going, which reminded Doll of the times in the rehab zoo where they would take her to different rooms for different procedures. Her questions always went unanswered, as though knowing what they were going to do would make her unruly. Doll could never recall rebelling against anything; her only act of rebellion was the refusal to take the pills and look how great that had ended? She had nearly lost all recollection of the time she had shared in the mansion with Zero. Doll opened and closed her palm, she wasn't going to let that happen again. There was no way Doll was going to let her mind keep locking up important memories.

How could she hide the journal? She didn't want the Doctor to see it before she had a chance to read it and at the rate she was reading now, it could take Doll a while. She could stick it in with the pages of the book she was making, maybe no one would notice? Doll could only hope. In the meantime, she opened up the book, flipping to the last page she had read and starting from there.

Dear Diary,
Today was a bit scary. These creatures began attacking our home, when I returned from school, our cleaning lady lay dead in the doorway, her throat torn out.

Doll blinked, was this... Could this have been written by a human?

The humans are rioting, Father explained to us. This was their way trying to take back their planet.

She let out a breath. No, it was written by a Being. Could it have been the Doctor's daughter? Somehow it was a bit of a relief that it wasn't written by a human, it made it easier somehow to read about a species she had no real connection to.

Dear Diary,
Father said we were getting a pet! The other children and I all went to the zoo to pick out our new human. Father said that when the Humans ruled, they used to keep animals as pets. It seems quite cruel to cage a cat or a bird, but they did! They kept them indoors too and even slept in the same beds sometimes!

Doll giggled, the thought of owning anything, much less an animal, was so preposterous that she couldn't quite believe that humans did it.

I apologize for any mistakes, I'm in a lot of pain so it's a bit hard to write.

This packing business never changed, no matter how much time has passed. Zero stuffed jeans and shirts in the duffle. When it came to these things he learned it's best to only take the essentials. There wasn't much to pack, he didn't hold on to many things anyways. A cell phone, tooth brush, socks, an old notebook where he wrote stuff, a hoodie or two, the tablet he barely used. He picked it up and stuffed that in its sleeve, Loretta could play with it on the road. Into the duffle it went.

All packed under ten minutes, Zero left the duffle on the floor of the room he wouldn't miss. The next hall over he knocked before opening, "Miss Loretta bring a sweater, I think the villa's gonna be a bit cold." She looked adorable curled up, reading the diary.

He walked in and picked up the pictures, they'd need a folder. He stood and looked around the room on the side desk there was a plastic, clear purple one. He crossed the room and slipped the pictures in careful, along with the blank sheets there.

Also the matter of her file, he had to pack that, it was still on the night stand. He went over to get it. Was it okay to show this to her? If not now then when? It wasn't like some test she could study for.

"I'm set." He let the folder close, then he glanced toward the closet, "You need a hoodie or something," But her closet was empty from his vantage point. He opened the door to the wardrobe to peer in, yup, definitely clear. One of the maids must have packed her things.

"Forget it, let's go." He went out to the hall to get one from his duffle, slipped the folders in there on the side so it wouldn't crumple. He pulled out the navy blue hooded sweater, held it out for her whilst zipping up the bag, "Want me to hold the diary for you?" It wouldn't be a good idea to be seen with it, at least he was sure Doc might not like it. After which they'd join Grell downstairs to go.

He was back by the time Doll had finished reading the first page. He worked quickly, but Doll already knew that. She slid off of the bed, meeting him at the door. He had a relatively modest sized bag slung over his shoulder and an unreadable expression on his face. It instantly melted once she locked eyes with him though and Doll smiled, albeit a bit shyly. "Where are we going?" Doll tried once more, hoping for at least some sort of answer this time. He moved to the closet though, asking if she had a sweatshirt. Doll shook her head, "they already emptied out all of the drawers." The female replied, clutching the diary to her chest. Zero unzipped his bag, rifling through it and throwing a navy sweatshirt at her. It landed over her head and Doll pulled the sweatshirt off, holding it in her arms. She looked between him and the journal, wondering if it would be alright to hand it to him. It would probably be the most covert method of sneaking it out. "Alright," she nodded her head, sticking the diary into Zero's suitcase before he zipped it shut.

She shrugged the sweatshirt on, zipping it up in the front. It was awfully big, but it was warm and it smelled like Zero. "I'm ready," the girl said eagerly, following after Zero. She was excited to see where they were going. Another adventure? Perhaps. As they went downstairs, a few of the staff had gathered as well as Grell. Doll didn't really consider him staff since he seemed to be pretty close to the Doctor and Zero. There was a sort of nonchalant air about the group here and Doll wondered what they could possibly all be doing down here, gathered like this. They were rushed out the door, three or four cars awaiting to take them. Outside, the sky was darkening. Was the day really coming to a close so fast?

As they prepared the vehicles, Doll ran to a pile of fluffy snow and jumped into it, her nose turning red from the cold. The house was decorated with lights like fireflies of all different colors (she had found a book today describing the little light bugs). It had been about little children catching them in jars and setting them free at the end of the night. They looked like lanterns glowing in the sky as they drifted upwards, set free by the children once more. They were getting in the car, Doll tried to bring a handful of snow with her, not really understanding its properties, but by the time she reached the car door it had all but melted, leaving nothing but a cold memory in her fingertips. As they drove away, Doll turned in the seat to look back at the mansion and its flickering lights.

When she turned forward, she noticed a lot of the houses had the same technicolor florescence on the outside. "Why are all the houses so pretty tonight?" Doll turned in the seat to ask Zero. Grell was in the front seat with the driver, who was a man Doll had never seen before.

Loretta stuck the diary into the folds of his clothes before the duffle was zipped, tossed over his shoulder for the long haul. He took her hand after she pulled the hoodie over her head and he chuckled, too adorable. They went downstairs and the tension the staff didn't show ebbed off them in waves of suppressed concern. The trip could go anywhere, they'd either make it one-piece, or something might pop out at them. Zero steeled himself for it, he couldn't be surprised anymore.

He walked Loretta out where the crisp early winter air dusted them in flurries. He stilled when her hand slipped from his grasp and his eyes tore from the line of vehicles to her frolicking in the snow. One would think she'd never seen it in her life.

With a sigh he waited patient, and kept it to himself that her little snow collection wouldn't last. He ruffled her hair, "We can make snow men when we get to where we're headed. That and gloves. You'll need it." He held the door of the SUV open for her.

When they pulled away he checked to ensure she was buckled in, but Loretta's attention were on the multi-colored lights that decorated the few houses that cared to continue on a human's pagan holiday. Beings didn't have any God, nor did they value any such ideals as religion. How curious. Maybe they did it for their human companions, because no, they're not pets. Humans who still believed they lived in a world with a God that could save them, hear their prayers, grant them relief from their daily sufferings under being law like some miracle.

He couldn't help stare himself, it is strange isn't it?

"Those are lights, it's a human conception, the time they celebrate a certain religious event. One that took place decades ago, they call it Christmas."

Or perhaps beings celebrated the holiday selectively. They decorated out of habit because maybe, it gave them something to do in the long winters and the endless nights that came.

Vague lights and carols echoed in the corners of memory, some light reflected off shattered ornaments, presents wrapped in day's old newspaper. The compass and pocket watch a glimmer of the past that bled into his present in constant rememberance. He couldn't recall any other time but that one. Any other year they exchanged a gift, brother to brother. Memories liked to slip away as rain drops, or stick as snow flakes on glass.

"Pretty sure Doc might celebrate it this year, considering." Zero said, he slipped his hand into the duffle behind him to brandish the cell, he took out the battery, slid the window down and chucked the phone. Hopefully the maids hadn't packed Loretta a phone. If they did he'd get rid of it the next stop. No more risks.

He stared out the window, were they seriously being escorted by a team? How descreet of Doc. Let the entire block know they were leaving. They should've taken the old car, the one that couldn't be detected by GPS, the one no one would suspect had Loretta in it.

Zero leaned forward and tapped Grell's shoulder, "We gotta rendezvous point right? Let's call it the garage, somewhere to switch out? Tell me you guys didn't forget that." They couldn't go all the way in this giant neon sign. He hooked his thumb over his shoulder indicating the only human in the vehicle, "After all, precious cargo."

Still no answer as to where they were going. Maybe it was a surprise? Or perhaps she wasn't meant to know? If Zero was coming then Doll felt at ease. Zero wouldn't let anything bad happen. Even now he was looking around worriedly, even throwing it a little box out the window. Doll wondered what the box was, but knew better than to ask. Obviously if Zero had thrown it out, it was dangerous. Or maybe it was something the Doc had given him? Zero asked Grell questions that Doll didn't quite understand. Was this as serious as he was making it out to be? Should she be worried? Were they not going to go back to the house? Was that why Zero's things were all packed? Doll fidgeted in her seat. "Once we get to the main road we're going to split up. There's only going to be one escort and they'll be trailing several cars behind us." Grell replied, seemingly calm. He picked up something off of his lap and put it on the mini tray table between the chairs. If her nose was correct, it was chocolate.

He said they would make snowmen. "What's a snowmen?" Doll suddenly thought to ask, realizing that she had no idea what they were. The name hinted at something made of snow, unless snowmen were a type of confection? Doll would love to try making cookies, she'd love to try making something out of snow too. One of the books she had picked up from the library had sled dogs and talked about a child that lived in an igloo in a place called Alaska. The child rode puppies and made deliveries on their sleigh. She almost forgot! "Are we-can we go sledding when we get there?" Doll looked at the lights after Zero explained the meaning behind them to her. So it was Christmas? "Is today Christmas?" She would have to look for more books when they came back, Doll wanted to know what this Christmas was and why people strung colorful lights on their houses for it.

There was so much learning, with her memories gone, everyday she experienced something new, or got to rexperience it as though for the first time. Doll's focus went from the window to the chocolate tray. She was tempted and her stomach growled. Finally she gave in, taking one of the pieces and savoring it by sucking on the treat rather than chewing it. Moments after she was licking her fingers and her eyelids began to feel very heavy. It wasn't long before Doll drifted off to sleep, her head lulling to the side.

She awoke when they went over a bump. Doll sat up, suddenly alert, startled by the sudden jostling. They were driving through a forest, trees that touched the sky like buildings towered above them. Doll gawked, attempting to trace the treeline to the sky but finding that the window cut it off. "Is this Alaska?" Doll asked excitedly, pulling her gaze from the window. The car was quiet, an odd sort of peacefulness seeming to have fallen over it.

Split up at the main road, then continue with minimal security ok, that could work. If anything sprang at them, they got a better chance at taking it out sans all the mess. He could trust Grell to have his back, no question. At least Grell was calm and cool, Zero didn't realize how tense he was until he noticed this. He settled back in the seat and rolled the window back up.

Loretta questioned about snowmen, Zero explained they were exactly as the name implied, men made of snow. He smiled at her next question,"Sledding, sure, we can do that too." Provided they were in the clear to even consider remaining outdoors longer than the time it took to cross from car to inside the safety of the Villa. She didn't have to know that yet, he could lay it on her once they reached that point.

She seemed overly awed about the lights and its symbolism, "It's not Christmas yet, but it's coming soon."

He gazed out the window taking note of the distance, more and more they left the place he was only beginning to familiarize with. Or perhaps they would return after this blew over, how long was the question. A couple months, a year? Two?

Zero touched his forehead to the cool glass, his head heavy, he closed his eyes a moment. They'd spend the holiday in a stranger place, put on a smile for Loretta because she can't experience her first with a house full of tension, if anything Zero came to learn that it wasn't about that. It should be a merry event.

He glanced at her voice, she was imaginative he'd give her that.

"Not Alaska, no where close. You'd want to go to Alaska someday?" Maybe they could plan a trip there, once they dealed with this. If that's in the cards. Not only Alska but Europe too, see the Eiffel or what's left of it, maybe even go as far as Rome. Even beings could dream.

Apparently they were not in Alaska, in fact, Zero informed her, they were nowhere close. He did say they could visit it one day though, making Doll believe that it was just a hop-skip-and a jump away. She nodded her head vigorously, clearly excited by the idea of visiting Alaska. "Where are we now then?" Maybe she could somehow figure out where they were going this way? Although Doll doubted it considering she didn't even know the name of the they had been in before. She was hardly able to sit still now, when they got there, wherever there was, they were going to build snowmen! And go sledding! The car suddenly started to go up a deep incline, driving through a fancy wrought iron gate that closed behind them. They pulled up behind a line of cars, the others had seem to reach it before them. Excitedly, Doll opened the door and unstrapped herself, stumbling out and into the snow. It was deeper here, almost knee deep, and one of the staff were in the middle of shoveling it. "There's so much!" Doll jumped up and down, throwing handfuls into the air.

The lights flickered on, it was night already and the soft glow of Christmas lights illuminated the snow in rainbow colors. Her eyes became wide, her expression one of awe. The lights were on the dimmest setting so as not to alert anyone nearby and the staff had figured there was no real danger in turning them on for a few minutes to welcome them. "Christmas!" The word made her happy for unknown reasons, it felt almost... Nostalgic somehow, the snow, the glowing lights, it was almost as though she had experienced this before. One of the staff placed their hand on her shoulder, ending the odd feeling and steered her inside. Perhaps it was too cold to play? Doll looked outside longingly. The house was bigger, but smaller than the mansion. The windows were large, the house nearly invisible from the road and any neighbors. Everything was so discreet.

She went to the window, looking outside at the tall trees that covered every side of the mansion. If she were to climb one, would she be able to touch the sky? Doll had always wanted to grab a cloud, especially the ones on the day that Zero had taken her to meet Isabel. The clouds had been so fluffy that day, like spun fairy floss, or the down of a pillow. "Can you sleep on clouds?" Doll wondered aloud. Around the entryway, workers were going in and out, bringing in bags and boxes. Where would they all sleep? There seemed to be so many of them? Did they all sleep on one big bed? Doll would have to ask Zero later.

Had he told her were they were headed it may tip off whoever else listened. Better a surprise that would present a better sense of security than none at all. Precautionary measures. Zero couldn't relax even when they succeeded in the switch-out, farther and farther down new roads he memorized. Loretta at least wound up in her own excited energy. Her entire form seemed to sparkle as lit trees in the night, wait until she saw one up close. If Doc decided to put the effort, or have the staff on board go all out.

Another hour in and finally the roads curled into a much secluded property, the Villa hidden among bowing trees weighted by snow. It was like walking into a damn snow globe, the lights fairy-danced with promise and the Villa gave off a soothing, cozy vibe. It didn't stop him from taking in the area, aha, cameras hidden in the trees, it followed their migration from car to the property line.

Loretta bolted from within, didn't even notice the chill and dizzying flakes. She lost herself in the snow.

Zero kept close to her side, followed her when one of the staff ushered her inside. The scent of candle-lit cinnamon and apples greeted them along with the swirl of winter they brought with them. Zero let his duffle sink to the floor in the living room, he sat on the edge of a sofa and the idea of wrapping himself in the forest green throw that was left over the arm rest and clocking out seemed terribly appealing.

Sleep on clouds... He glanced up and caught her peering out tall windows frosted over. She already had the perfect smile, the excitement for a holiday she just learned about.

Zero messaged his temple where the tention built most, he rested his chin on his hand, "No. Clouds wouldn't support your weight, not that they're solid much. You'd fall right through them and get wet." He said, "It's rain waiting to fall. But there are beds that are, cloud-soft."

"But then, wouldn't you just fall through the beds if they're cloud soft?" Doll pondered, walking over to Zero from the window. The living room was like something you would see in one of the books, it was decorated for what Zero had called Christmas with a tree lit in the corner. It almost looked like a hotel lobby and the air smelled delightful, tinged with the scent of something sweet. She unzipped the hooded sweatshirt, suddenly cold from the snow that clung to it. They looked like a hive of bees, the way the staff went in and out, bringing the chilly air in with them every time the door opened. Doll sat on the floor and pulled off her boots, the fur lining had snow clung to it as well. She noticed the cameras in every corner to ensure that there would be no blind spots and frowned. Why were they being watched? "Zero, are we in trouble?" Doll asked, referring to all of the security.

She wasn't stupid, Doll had noticed the tension that was as thick as the layer of snow outside and it was making her feel scared. All of this secrecy, why? Had this been a quick weekend getaway, the staff wouldn't have been so on edge; Zero wouldn't have packed so much, things would be much less serious. The stress of moving again, of having to memorize new halls and rooms, it took a toll on everyone. It wasn't so bad though, Doll remembered. There was plenty of snow and hills for sledding and somehow, the cold was almost cozy. It made wrapping up in blanket and bundling in sweatshirts seem pleasant. Plus, there was no Doctor with them. That was always a plus, maybe now, she would be able to go day to day without getting shots or having pills forced down her throat.

Doll yawned, it was late and she was hungry and tired. She couldn't remember whether or not she'd eaten lunch, in fact, most of the day was a blur. It had begun with coloring, or maybe returning to the Atarashi household? Where had they been before? Doll got up from the floor and sat beside Zero on the couch. "Will we be allowed out tomorrow?" She asked, glancing back to the door where the security man stood, dressed as a doorman. She tried to keep things bright, to look on the positive side. Hopefully they wouldn't be trapped here like prisoners. With the miles of forest and road, there was no one to hear them scream and the thought was chilling, but also exciting.

He chuckled at that and shook his head, "It's not an actual cloud silly, it's soft like one." She'd learn about figurative speech in the long run. Though her reactions were unexpectedly refreshing.

Zero sighed a little, relaxed at her closeness. How long were they gonna be stuck here? With all the seclusion and inability to go anywhere it's like The Shining already. He shuddered. Then she asked something about the surveillance cams systematically placed throughout.

"It's not for us, it's for security reasons, don't worry about it."

They're more noticeable than back at the manor. If he found even one in his room, well, security or no it was gonna get smashed. He sent a glare at one of the black eyes, how chilling. He averted his gaze and stood, around them the servants came and went, everyone of them shot glances as if they didn't trust him. They must have heard about that curb-stomp battle he had back at the warehouse. Fine by him, let them be weary, he could give a rat's ass what they thought.

Zero went over to pick up his duffle, when she asked if they could go out tomorrow.

"I think we should all take five before venturing out. Just stay inside, watch a movie, work on your scrap booking..." He gave the living room another once-over, he couldn't shake the feeling in his gut that maybe this wasn't as solid as Doc promised. He could be wrong, but Zero wasn't about to drop his guard like he did before, not happening.

"C'mon, Let's check out the place, grab a room." He held his hand out for her to take. No more chances, he was keeping her within his field of vision as much as he could.

The bed wasn't actually a cloud? How misleading. They should just call it a soft pillow then, not a cloud pillow. Doll shook her head, wondering if words weren't always what they seemed. Like humans, they had depth, could invoke and create emotions; cause tears and happiness. It seemed that they could have two faces as well, like a double edged sort. Figurative and literal.

Doll noticed that when she sat beside him on the couch, his posture became a bit more relaxed. Was that a coincidence? Doll wondered. He said that they weren't in trouble and yet he sent a chilling glare to the cameras watching them all from every angle. Could it be possible that Zero was... Lying? But why? Were they really in trouble and he didn't want her to worry? Zero took her hand, telling her that they should go claim a room. Yes, that would be best. Doll could ponder over the lie later; it could just be that she was over analyzing though, thinking that she was seeing things that weren't true. Doll followed him up the stairs, her eyelids growing heavy.

It was late and she was very tired after all. Doll just wanted to lay down and close her eyes... "Oh, I left your sweatshirt downstairs," she rubbed one of her eyes as they reached the second floor. She spotted another staircase down the hallway, there were three floors to this villa apparently. Doll didn't think it was any smaller than the mansion, in fact, with all of the large windows, it seemed even bigger. Doll was going to ask Zero whether he'd share a bed with her when someone walked over to them. "Loretta, Zero, we've prepared your rooms. If you'll follow me." She led them a bit to the left, opening two doors. Loretta poked her head inside, between the rooms there was a door that was open so that it was technically one room. Doll stepped fully into the room. The bed was large and she flopped down onto it, wondering why they always decorated with a million pillows. "Is this a cloud top?" Doll called out to Zero; it certainly felt like a cloud.

They headed up the stairs, he glanced at her when she said she'd forgotten the hoodie to which he told her it was fine. They could always get it later. There were several floors of the villa, could they check it all out? He wanted to, in a sense know the entire layout of the villa, memorize the route to all exits, devise an emergency plan. However that would have to wait, down the hall he noticed another, she approached and said that their rooms where already prepared for them? Really? Couldn't they chose for themselves where they wanted to sleep? Why were they calling all the shots?

Zero noticed he held Loretta's hand a little too firmly, he loosened his grip.

Fine. Whatever.

"Lead the way." He said, and followed her the rest of the way.

Behind a set of doors another room, Lorreta glanced in and let his hand go. He noticed their rooms were only divided by a door. Interesting.

He continued to his side and let the duffle sit on the side table. This was something he'd have to get used to, the uncertainty.

"Is this a cloud top?"

Zero unzipped the duffle so he could pull out her stuff, the folder and diary, give it to her when the lady left.

"Yeah, I guess." He called back, then glanced at the bed behind him. He approached it like a stranger and pressed his hand into it. Then sat down. It yielded beneath him effortless, memory foam? He lay down, yup, memory foam.

"It is cloud-soft." No argument there. Would he sleep on it? Maybe. He stood up and looked around the room, it was smaller than the last one, he frowned. Except the bare closet space and side table there wasn't much. It lacked something he couldn't put a name to.

Zero crossed over to the door, slipped his fingers into the pockets of his jeans and his gaze skirted around her room. The windows were curtained with thick black-outs, frost clung to the glass. Little bears sat on her window seat, she had a wardrobe, mirrored vanity, a side table opposite his wall, and a flat screen against the other wall. What kind of shows or movies would she watch? Most likely Disney stuff.

"What do you think?" He asked, finally his gaze locked on her, she seemed to melt into her bed. Just watching her smile calmed him, he wanted nothing more but to preserve that shimmer of light.

Doll wasn't too pleased with all of the change. Getting used to one environment then switching all of a sudden. Then again, Doll didn't really have the right to complain. She was human, property in today's day and age. Much like property, she could be moved from one house to another, never expected to make a sound or have a complaint. So when Zero asked her what she thought, Doll smiled and said, "I like it." After all, there was no reason to really complain. It wasn't as though she was being separated from Zero, she wasn't forced to wear a collar or sleep on the floor, her sanity was still [mostly] intact. Yes, there were plenty of reasons to be thankful. "Are you alright?" Doll sat up. "You seem worried." She had noticed that something was bothering him, but what, Doll couldn't tell.

Doll yawned and before Zero was able to answer, she was laying down, able to fall asleep easily with his soothing presence. She had wanted to reassure Zero that everything was going to be alright, even if they were somewhere new, it only meant that there was more to explore.

"It's a curse really, to have such lineage. Human nor being, you belong in neither world." Whispered words, cages and pain.

"Why don't you just die already?"

Doll awoke feeling as though she couldn't breathe. She clawed at the blankets, bolting upright in terror. Darkness gave way to light and it was morning, splinters of light managing to creep through the black-out curtains. Her hands trembled, but it not from the cold. Doll swung her legs over the bed, sliding down and pulling the curtains in. The light was warm and bright, a welcome change after such a long night. For a moment, Doll forgot where she was. How had she gotten here, to this unfamiliar room? Then Doll remembered. The car ride here, the cameras, Zero. The morning fog crept away and Doll tip toed over to the door to peek into Zero's room. Was he awake yet? Doll wondered, realizing that what she was doing was rude and carefully closing the door, going to sit by the window.

She was happy. That's enough. Then she wondered if he was alright, he offered a reassuring smile, he'd be alright. He wanted to believe it. Soon enough she curled up and drifted easily, he walked in and made sure to tuck her in so she wouldn't get a cold.

"Oyasumi." He whispered, his fingers combed down a few strands of her silken hair and honestly there was no other place he'd rather be. He lingered until the room darkened and only the moonlight trickled through. He left her room despite wanting to sleep beside her but he wouldn't sleep.

He pulled the chair and sat down at his desk so he could read the rest of Loretta's file, a lot of mystery surrounded her and there was only so much the scientists had learned. For the most part she had, as he noted earlier, gone through so much pain. Her mark-up is unusual, something about her DNA having an abnormality, a faster regeneration than humans, the endurance unlike a girl her age. He could see why Doc found her incredibly fascinating. Neither human, nor being. Special. Unique. A varient.

What did this mean for her? More trouble? She'd ever be free from these bastards? They're always gonna be at her shadow, waiting. He slammed the file shut and resisted the urge to hurl the entire thing across the room. How sickening. She isn't a science experiment she's Loretta. Guess he'd just have to keep reminding them that.

Zero rifled through his duffle and came upon her purple folder and diary. He picked both up and went to her room, her window also had a hidden compartment beneath the seat, he slid them inside and giving the room another thorough check, just in case, he locked her window, then he left to his side. He sunk onto the edge of the bed and stared out into the snow globe world outside his window. He watched the night in its silence give way to morning until he couldn't anymore and reached out to draw the curtains.

The door creaked open and he glanced back, she's up. She seemed to hesitate a moment after and before her eyes could reach him she shut the door.

Zero stood, the room seemed to spin a little. He gripped at the edge of the foot board and kept himself verticle. He shut his eyes while the throbbing branched in his head and the unsteady spell passed.

He took a step, reached her door and Jesus he couldn't see.

Squinting against the light he focused on the floor, "Hey... 'Morning." Another step and he entered her side where the warmth threatened to crumble him. Zero leaned against the wall and tried his best to calm himself, it was gonna be one hell of a challenge keeping this from her but he didn't want her to worry about it. Everything's fine.

The door creaked open, Doll jumped at the sudden disturbance of the silence, seeing it was just Zero. "Good morning," Doll greeted, getting to her feet. Instantly she noticed something was wrong, he wobbled if only for a second, but it was enough for Doll to see through the guise. Zero didn't seem to want to tell her anything though so Doll didn't pry. "Are we gonna build snowmen today?" Doll asked as she excitedly looked between the window and Zero. "If you don't want to-" Doll said quickly, in case he wasn't feeling well, "we can just work on the scrap book?" There was also no telling if they would be allowed outside.

Prisoners in a jail made to look like a castle, it was almost funny. At least in prison, you got outside time. Doll wasn't sure if they were going to be allotted such a thing. At least if they had to be prisoners, it was in such a nice place. Doll was certain that in normal prisons (or at least zoos) there weren't fancy meals prepared by a privately employed chef, or clothing that actually (somewhat) fit. There was a knock on the door, Grell opened it partially and pushed in a cart with breakfast, saying that he would stop by later to see if they had any requests for lunch or dinner.

Someone's cheery. Zero managed an easier smile, it wasn't difficult to let go just a little bit. She peered out the window again, talked about snowmen... Right, he'd forgotten about that. But was it alright for them to just go outside like that? Wouldn't it be safer if they stayed inside a while longer? Just to be certain that no, they weren't being followed by anyone. He still wanted to talk to Doc about this, they couldn't possibly expect him to stay put in this fancy little prison. He didn't want to see it as that, but it was beginning to feel like an over-sized cage.

Zero squeezed his eyes shut and pushed that thought far away, no this isn't a cage, don't go there. Don't go there. He opened his eyes, damn it was hard to look anywhere, she had to close the curtail a little. He turned so that he was half-way in his room were the darkness beckoned. She spoke again, this time considering him—she knew somehow he wasn't fine which meant he failed at hiding it from her, they could work on her scrap booking.

"The folder is under the seat."

Zero glanced at the door, he sensed Grell. A familiar knock followed by the meals-on-wheels cart, mostly for Loretta. A message for her, since Zero wouldn't even bother touching human food.

"I have a request, where the hell is Doc? Tell him I want a word." That came out harsher than he'd meant, but Grell would figure out why he was like this. Who could get used to this set-up and keep their sanity? Zero wasn't gonna put up with it and he wasn't about to stay quiet either. They needed a plan, they couldn't sit around, he couldn't sit around waiting for answers, waiting for Doc to make up his mind. If anything he wanted to know exactly what's what. Who were they dealing with? What did they want? Something told him it wasn't just Loretta. Crap like this is never as clear-cut there was more.

Zero glanced at at her, this meant she had to know too. This bubble she built around herself had to burst and it crushed him how much it might hurt her. Another broken promise. But her time of sitting in the darkness grasping straws was over. They had to be prepared for the worst, she had every damn right to know and be aware of the threat hanging over her head. It wasn't fair but it was right.

"Bring your stuff over, we can work in my room." He turned into his room and switched on the lamp. Its amber glow blanketed the dark room in soft light. He picked up the folder he'd left on the writing desk, he couldn't show her this, not yet right? wouldn't it shock her? Or perhaps he wasn't giving her enough credit. She'd seen monsters and witnessed blood-spill and could put on a game face, she was strong and terribly brave.

He slipped the file into the drawer. Closed it. If she were to see this, would she get it? Could she read the graphs, charts, and reports and findings and realize that no, she wasn't just normal but something the scientists were baffled by? What would she get out of this little slice of knowledge? Would she think she was some kind of messed up freak? Or maybe she'd reject the idea entirely?

When she walked into the room, he stared at the empty wooden surface, then sighed, "Miss Loretta, do you know why we're here?" Did she think they were on a vacation? Taking a break from the manor maybe. No, she wasn't stupid, she had to know something's up.

Zero snapped at Grell, losing his patience. Doll took a step back, a bit taken aback by Zero's approach. He wanted answers, leading Doll to believe that he also had no idea where they were or what they were doing here. Instantly Zero regained his composure; Doll's appetite was lost. She went to pick up the folder and took it to Zero's room, bringing her crayons as well. She settled down on the plush carpet, beginning her doodles. What new things did Doll like? Snow, she decided. Yes, she very much liked it. Oh and Christmas! Doll couldn't wait to celebrate it. She wondered what sort of things you did on Chri-

Her thoughts were cut off when Zero started talking. Did she know what they were doing here? Doll shook her head, "No." She had no idea, to be honest. Doll sat up, wondering if this was going to be another serious conversation. "I thought at first that maybe we were just going on a trip, but everyone's acting so serious and they keep talking quietly like they don't want us to hear.... It's scaring me." Doll was being honest. In a hugely inappropriate response, her stomach growled. It was almost laughable, how serious she was trying to be, then her stomach goes off and does something like that. "I'm sorry," Doll apologized, trying to suppress her giggles. "I'll be right back," she stood and went to the other room, grabbing a piece of toast and a cup of chocolate milk before returning.

She sat back down, wiping crumbs from her mouth with the back of her hand. Something caught her eye, a small square piece of paper that had fallen to the ground by the desk. It couldn't have been bigger than her thumb and yet, there was quite the familiar character printed on it. She blinked in surprise, but said nothing, training her eyes back on Zero.
