Xavier had wrapped his jacket around her, fearing that the cold would kill her before the blood loss did. Doll didn't move in his arms, he noticed how light she was and wasn't surprised at the thought that maybe Madame didn't feed her. Humans were fragile, they were easily snapped in half by the Beings who treated them like ants to be squished underfoot. Xavier had heard of a world that was once ruled by humans, their reign so mighty the Beings had feared them. The thought of such a thing now was laughable. Legends always rang with truth, maybe in the future humans would rule once more.

He took her through the back door. Pets and servants couldn't go through the front, only the Lords and honored guests could use the front. It was hard carrying a person through a bustling kitchen. The kitchen was always busy, considering how many people it had to feed at each meal. Around clanging pots and pans, up a winding spiral staircase to the floor most of them slept on. Xavier shared a room with another pet, a human boy who was much older than he. He found the Doctor quickly who waved away the patient he had been treating for a stomach ache. "What have you brought me Xavier?" He asked, standing. "I met her at Madame Maddox's party the other night, found her passed out in the forest." He frowned, knowing Madame's habit of getting rid of the toys she had broken, the Yard looked the other way because of her position of power . Xavier placed her on the small bed, going to get a blanket from the other room.

He had just returned when someone came in, a Being with strange tails like knives coming from his body. Xavier froze in surprise, the Doctor backing away from the sleeping girl on the bed. "Are you the one that did this to her?" Xavier asked, his expression becoming angry. Who was this boy, coming in and threatening them all. "You can't just treat humans like dirt," he growled.

"There's no time." The Doctor said gently to them both, "By the looks of these wounds I'm surprised she's even lasted this long." The Doctor stood, walking over to the boy that was threatening them. "If you'll allow me to simply stitch up the wounds, you can have her as soon as I've finished."

Despite the fact that she appeared to be sleeping, her expression was one of pain. Doll could still feel it, her limbs like ice frozen to her sides. She had to keep walking, her mind told her, if just kept moving everything would be fine. Doll felt like someone had taken away her limbs, replacing them with led and she couldn't move, therefore, she couldn't walk.

Zero tensed at the other's accusations, surprised at how it stung. He'd never hurt her. Why did this kid automatically think it was him?

"I don't." Zero let out on a hiss. He lowered his vector away from him, he isn't a being.

Never mind him, Zero turned his attention on the doctor. He seemed concerned, was he like Doc, did he subject humans to weird medicines and shots? Or help them, help them get better. Maybe he did, enough to offer assistance.

Zero took a breath, there was no time her pulse was skipping too. He approached the bed, she was still but her features revealed her silent agony. He touched her head, she was too hot, humans can't survive when their temperatures hike a certain limit.

"Please, save her." He tucked her windswept, shortened strands out her face, they were damp at his finger tips. His knees gave beneath him, a weight that forced him to the ground.

Loretta... Dying?

The world see-sawed, he couldn't move, his heart threatened to burst from him. It was worse than any nightmare, it knocked him down, left him shaken. How could this happen? How did it get to this? She's safer with him than without him. And she was all he had.

He was supposed to keep her safe. He promise he would and here he went. Breaking it.

Maybe that's why she was so angered, that and the festering poison that was Maddox's lies.

"... I can't lose her." He blinked away the warmth in his eyes, damn, it was hard to keep the mask on when it was already cracked. When pieces of him kept falling away into nothing and the hits didn't stop. Like the world wanted him to shatter. Wanted him to break again.

Xavier didn't feel any safer when the white haired stranger's odd powers seemed to dissolve. Being near the Beings always set the human boy on edge. The poor guy seemed absolutely wrecked by the thought of losing this girl. Xavier went to grab the Being a drink, figuring he must have been cold following them all the way to Lord Grace's manor.

The Doctor worked with the utmost care. He was gentle, turning the girl over and cutting away what remained of the dress with a pair of surgical scissors. "You're not going to lose her." The Doctor assured Zero, although in truth he wasn't sure. He didn't know how old the wounds were, how much blood had been lost, what they were exposed to. He was worried about infection, even in the winter it was dangerous to be walking around with an open wound. "Thankfully it isn't too deep." The glass had shredded through her skin, but the cuts didn't appear to go farther than the surface. He brought forth a needle, explaining everything to Zero as he did it. "This is a pain medication that will also relax the muscles, which makes it much easier to stitch." He injected it into her should and disinfected the wounds on her back, stitching them up with smooth, assured strokes. There, that was one done.

He had noticed the heat rippling off of her body in waves, a fever was concerning, it could indicate to further internal damage, something he hadn't been able to see. There were no entry or exit wounds, however the girl had burn and bite marks on her neck, no doubt from Maddox's "play time." The Doctor went through his equipment, grabbing a vial and needle. "This one is for the fever, it has antibodies so if there is an infection it'll keep it from getting worse." Doll whimpered, despite the medicine she was still in great pain. "This is another one for pain," his injections were quick and painless, having dealt with many humans and knowing that they didn't particularly enjoy being stuck with needles, especially when it was against their will.

He treated the head wound next, "you're lucky it's nothing more than a concussion and surface wound." He frowned, concussions were tricky to treat though. It would require minimal movement and lots of rest. Xavier returned, pressing a mug into Zero's hands. "Drink," he instructed. "It'll help." The kitchen had made it specially, with a bit of human blood in it for replenishment. Xavier tugged at his sleeve. Well really, he had borrowed a knife and let the blood from his palm drip into it. Lord Grace drank from him all the time, but the thought of giving his blood to a stranger made him feel odd.

"If you're going," Xavier started, wondering if this request would get him in trouble. "Can you take me with you?" The Doctor turned, eyeing him suspiciously. "Xavier," he warned, both knowing that such talk was forbidden in the manor. Contrary to what Zero may have believed, the Doctor was a human too. He had learned to treat patients that came into their illegal human camp. His ambition was to help every human he came across, but the camp had been infiltrated by Beings and he had ended up in Lord Grace's collection. He knew all too well what happened to pet's that tried to escape.

Xavier knew as well, but that didn't mean he wouldn't try. "I can be useful," Xavier said quickly. He was hoping that the fact that he had found the Being's friend would have some pull. "I can provide you with blood." That's all humans were really good for anyways.

Zero never left her side, he watched the doctor do his thing and explain the process. He didn't want to watch as each necessary injection was administered but he couldn't avert his gaze because he had to watch. Make sure everything was going exactly as expressed.

He didn't speak, all he could do was watch her. He was still shaky and wrung out, he pulled the vectors as they drained him.

No, he wasn't lucky, he never was. But she was, unbelievably so.

Then Xavier was back with a mug of something warm, the scent of blood made his head spin. Wait, when did he leave? Zero shook his head, he didn't want to risk if there was something else in it. Even if he did accept his stomach wasn't up for it, too knotted up.

Then he asked something, take him? Like out the country "take" him?

This kid.

But the doctor cut him a warning, and Zero sighed. Yeah, this wasn't what he was still here for. All he wanted was Loretta, all he gave a rat's ass about was her. Nothing else. But humans were born to be free and he believed in that right.

All of them.

He rubbed at the back of his neck, muscles tense beneath his touch. His gaze lingered on her.

"You don't want that, not really." Zero said after a long pause. "And if you do, you're lying to yourself."

Xavier had figured as much, he didn't think the kid would say yes to him tagging along. "I bet you wouldn't be so quick to say that if you knew what happened inside of these walls." He laughed but there was no humor behind it, a gesture that had no warmth. There was a reason the Lord wasn't married, a reason he only had male pets. "No one can be free, but we can sure as hell try." Xavier wasn't going to be put off by this guy, he was going to have his freedom; one way or another.

"Besides, I saved your girlfriend, doesn't that count for something?" Xavier sat leaning against the wall. "I'm not asking to stay with you, just get me out of here." The Doctor shushed him once more, "this guy's a human too." Xavier hooked his thumb towards the man in the lab coat. "Got caught in one of the underground societies and taken into the zoo." The Doctor rolled his eyes, reaching for the scissors again to cut off a piece of bandage. "There, she's patched up for now. I've done my best with what I have in my stocks but I suggest getting her to a rehab zoo, or at the least a real doctor."

"Don't demean yourself like that Doc." Xavier got up and pat the man on the back. "you are a real doctor." His expression suddenly lit up, "we can provide excellent entertainment too." As though to show him, Xavier picked up three stress balls on the Doctor's desk and began to juggle them, acting as though he slipped and all three hitting his head before falling to the floor. "Okay, maybe not the best entertainment either." There was a giggle from the bed, Doll had awoken, but she was only slightly lucid and very hopped up on pain killers. "See, she likes it." Xavier smiled, it was easy this time, friendly.

It was only a moment or two before Doll's eyes fluttered closed once more, her head lulling to the side. "Xavier, quit that foolishness. What if someone overhears you and reports it to the Lord?" The Doctor handed two vials full of pain killers to Zero. "Just in case," he said. "You should get going before the Lord returns, last I heard he had eyes on Madame Maddox's new pet." Xavier nodded his head in confirmation, "yes he was rather rude about it too."

He wasn't sayin' no, just that going from one place as a slave to serve another was pointless. They'd be trapped in this circle of unending servitude, and what if they got caught, wouldn't it be worse? No, something told him it couldn't get any worse than how things are now. But they didn't want that, just a chance to escape.

Zero stared at the kid when he referred to Loretta as his girlfriend. He didn't know what to say to that. Only it reminded him of how much she'd put up a fight once she came to her senses. How her eyes would scorch him with misplaced resentment, how he'd stand helpless beneath the inferno of her every lashing word. If words came at all, accusing him of endless pain and scars that would never go away. Of how he stole any chances of her happiness.

At least then she'd be home and safe. As safe as he could make it, he and Ren. He wasn't sure the extent of the damage, how much her mind had absorbed and molded as truth. How dark and twisted her world had become. But from what she displayed the last time they encountered each other, it wasn't hard to paint the picture. By then he would find out and if she was frightened as much as he, then he would go into the shadows, as if he were her monster, her devil.

Doc finished patching her up. Zero didn't want to move her; this wasn't exactly Holiday Inn.

"Thanks." Zero said, and he looked from her to him, "You did what you could, considering." And just like that the frost whirled away and there was light peeking through. So warm.

Xavier's mannerisms were strangely calming.

When Loretta's giggle sliced through him and he flickered his eyes at her.

The smile although brief, her gaze although unfocused, made him stop and stare and for a sliver of a moment there was hope. He smiled back, a reflexive tilt of his lips. Her mirror. Then her light shuttered and with it went the peace, but he'd clutch that image, keep it locked into the folds of his own memories, hold it forever.

Doc gave him these vials, for pain. He would have to trust his word, that's all he got. He slid them into his pocket, then he cupped her into his arms. So light, so fragile. He glanced out the window, Ren was close. "And you guys wanna stick around til that bastard shows? C'mon, we're bustin' outta here." He slid the window open, now look who's taken unconventional exists? The fastest way without having to take the long one.

"I figure you'd want to help, so I went ahead and made arrangements for the two. Head North-East the rout you'd taken, I sent Francis. He's in the black SUV make sure this time, it's Chevy."

Maria, he owed her more than he could ever repay.

"You're awesome." He whispered and headed out. The snow and chill of winter prickled at his skin but that didn't bother him much.

"Hey, what's the hold up?" Ren jogged over, his eyes were wide at the figures at the window. "New friends?"

Zero leapt off the edge of the roof, landed into the snow, kicking up clouds of white. Loretta cradled in his arms, fast asleep. "They're taggin'with us, for the ride back."

Like dad always said, help those who can't help themselves.

He stopped once reaching him. "Ren, give me your jacket."

Ren shrugged it off, draped it over Loretta. They'd get her dressed in winter gear once they reached base.

"Your friends are gonna need help, they can't make that jump without breaking something." Ren was staring above, then he took a running start before he was airborn. On the top he approached the window, "So, hear you're abandoning ship. We gonna do this or what?"

When Zero jumped out the window and landed on the ground, Doll whimpered. It hurt to move, to be moved, even with the pain medicine. The cold didn't help either of course, but Ren covering her with his jacket did to some degree make it better. Inside the house, Xavier turned to the Doc. "You coming?" He asked and the Doctor shook his head. "My job here isn't done. Don't worry Xavier, we'll meet again." He handed the boy his jacket. Xavier shrugged it on, looking down. The white haired Being seemed to have a friend who jumped right up to the window.

"Let's do this." Xavier smiled, giddy with excitement. The Doctor handed him a pair of surgical scissors and Xavier used it to tear through the collar, depositing it out the window and into the bushes. He was finally gonna be free, no longer fearing every day when the Lord came home, when he was requested in the bedroom. No more shame and embarrassment or punishment for not being the perfect pet. Screw being a pet altogether, Xavier was gonna run away to some human colony and never look back. He took the kid's hand without hesitation.

The ocean was warm, glittering blue with technicolor streaks from the sun. Her lungs hurt, feeling as though they were going to burst at any moment. Doll sank deeper down and the further she moved from the surface, the darker it got. Above people kept trying to reach for her, they continued in their efforts to pull her back but was impossible to hear them and she didn't know how to swim back up. Why did they want her so badly anyways? Couldn't they simply leave her here, in the warm ocean that embraced her like a blanket on a cold winter day. Their lives would be better without her, no doubt, she was a bother anyways.

How did she end up underwater anyways? Doll had a vague recollection of falling through a window. Had she been on a boat? No, that wasn't right. She tried to move, tried to swim back up. A sudden sense of urgency filled her body, the need to breathe, to break the surface. A wave pushed her further down, carrying a voice with it. "This doesn't look good Zero," a male spoke, his voice laced with concern. "I'll do what I can, but don't be upset if she doesn't wake up."

Wake up? Doll wasn't sleeping. She tried to scream, to tell them she was down there, in the water, but when she opened her mouth, the taste of bitter salt water touched her tongue. "I'm down here!" Doll flailed in the sea, another wave knocking her over.

"Don't give up on me yet."

At last they reached clearing, Francis drove down the patched, icy roads like some kind of speed demon. They were under the gun, so there wasn't much time to take the scenic route. From there the group raced to the jump-jet, Doc was there, he wore all black and hid his eyes behind shades.

"Get in, Maria briefed me on the tag-along, and Loretta's state."

Zero was first to board the highly advanced air-craft but only because of the urgency that was getting Loretta as quickly as possible to warmth and safety. The inside of such a thing was nothing like he'd ever seen before and had this been any other day, and had Loretta not been so hurt he may have marveled at it all. But all he had energy and attention for was her.

Ren and the others slipped in and strapped up for the fast flight. The tension was so tight that it might shatter over them, so it was a relatively quiet ride.

Doc took the jet and struck across the sky, although visibility didn't promise an immediate clearance they managed to get back to Leon Base in under twenty.

Zero held Loretta's hand, he couldn't part from her even when they landed, when Doc helped Loretta into the stretcher the on-staff Med team rolled in. He couldn't hear the words they were saying, the others in blue scrubs were already placing a mask over Loretta's face, another checked her vitals. Another slid a needle into her, the IV bag. He reached out and held it up for her.

Her heart raced, too fast. He couldn't keep up.

Ren came right behind him, following closely was Xavier. They were like shadows, present and silent.

The medical team crowded him, one took the bag away, another said he wasn't allowed into the E.R. once they reached it and he had to stand back.

Ren kept him back anyways.

Doc met with another man in white who came out, his coat's pocket read, Wentworth, M.D. and they exchanged words and their expressions tensed.

"This doesn't look good Zero," Doctor Wentworth said, "I'll do what I can, but don't be upset if she doesn't wake up."

Zero punched the wall just inches from his face, the plaster spider-webbed, "If you do your job, do it right, she'll wake, and I won't have any reason to be." He stepped back and whirled away. He couldn't be here, he couldn't wait so he just walked.

Ren kept at his trails, they were just walking. Walking under too bright lights, moving, faster, slower, but never stopping. He'd keep at this for hours, walking up and down the corridors until something came up. Until they could tell him if she'd be alright.

Doc had long been inside with Wentworth and the others, he knew Loretta more than anyone, knew how to fix her, if anyone can save her it was him.

"She'll be alright Zero, I'm sure." Ren said.

"And what if she isn't?" Zero said, and his world was growing dimmer because then what was he going to do if he lost her? Nothing. That's what. Nothing at all.

"She will be."

"And what makes you so sure?"

"She's a survivor, like me. We fight until we can't anymore. So that's how I know."

"I... Just..." Zero shook with the effort it took not to fall apart, not to break everything in front of him. But when Ren pulled him into his arms he couldn't hold it back. He buried his face into Ren's shirt and squeezed him tight as the fear and sorrow sucked him down into a haze of utter cold and all he could do was let it. Let it take him.

"Your entire world revolves around that boy." Another wave pushed her further and the room changed. She was standing on a platform, her surroundings white as far as the eye could see. Doll turned, jumping at the sound of a voice. There a man there, old with age with a bear that was probably as old as he was. "Who are you?" Doll asked but there came no answer. Instead, he beckoned to the floor and Doll looked down; she could see Zero walking, pacing. Doll wanted to reach out, but she hesitated, knowing he didn't want her. "Oh come now, if he really didn't would he be there, waiting for you to wake up?"

"I'm asleep?"

"Something like that."

"So why does he look so worried?" The man didn't answer, but that was enough. "Oh." He chuckled, "You seem to have a history of getting yourself into trouble." Doll turned towards him, "I wouldn't no, I don't have my memory."

"It's better that way." The man sighed, his hands in his pockets. He was wearing a Hawaiian tee shirt and khakis, like he was on vacation despite the fact that it was winter. "I want to go back." Doll sank to her knees, placing her hands on the floor. "Zero!" She screamed, but he couldn't hear her. "There's no use doing that," the man shook his head. "It's just an image, nothing more." He sighed, the image disappearing as though to prove a point. "Please!" Doll got to her feet, "Send me back there!" The man shook his head, "It's a world full of hardships, you're better off here."[/color]

"No!" Doll didn't mean to snap, she straightened, unable to help the tears. "I want to go back."

"It's not going to be easy." He warned, his tone stern.

"I don't care." Doll looked back at the floor but the image was gone. "As long as I can be with him, even if he doesn't want me to be." He chuckled, the man suddenly lightening up. "Alright, but don't say I didn't warn you."

"Who are you anyways?"

"Let's just say I'm your conscious."

The Doctor sat with his head in his hands, lab coat covered in blood. The others had left, the heart monitor had gone flat nearly an hour ago but he had yet to tell Zero. "I'm sorry," The Doctor whispered. "I failed I'm so sorry." The Doc stood, removing his lab coat and depositing it in the bin. He went to the door, looking back at the still girl and pushed through the door. The Doctor went to find Zero, who luckily wasn't far. "Zero," he started.

"I'm so sorry."

Had the Doctor been in the room, he would have seen the slightest bump in the heart monitor, the slow raise. It was slow, but she was still fighting. One of the nurses came back in with a death certificate, nearly dropping the clipboard. She ran back, the team prepping once more. The fight wasn't over.

One of the Beings burst through the doors, going to grab the Doctor. "Dr. Atarashi, we need you."

"Give me one minute Fiona."

"Doctor."

"I said-"

"It's the girl." His eyes widened, he ran back to the room where the others had already prepped for another round. "Hang in there Loretta," Doctor Atarashi whispered as he prepped, "we're not done yet."

Was he alive or just a ghost, haunted by sorrow? Always it chased him, like a poison it touched and destroyed everything. He and his brother, they were born cursed. He believed in those things, after all they were damned from the start, creatures with human faces, creatures with no souls. Maybe that's why bad things hung over their heads, affected them all. And Loretta had been the only person who chased away the shadows. Was hope slipping?

Doc was there, and no words were needed. But when he spoke, when he cemented the truth, Zero just stood there.

He was sorry.

So sorry.

Zero stared hard at the floor, his vision blurred, and heated tears slipped from him, he held his head and leaned back against the wall to keep him standing. She was gone, really gone! He shut his eyes and damn it was it hard to breathe. The storm rushed over him and he couldn't see. Ren suddenly grabbed him, "Zero. Zero!"

He felt the sensation of falling, then the chill of the floor beneath him. Voices and alarms, Ren shouted, told him to open his eyes. Ice stabbed him, he'd been ignoring it for so long, but it was there. It claimed him. The pounding had stopped. There was just silence. Silence.

There were so many words, things she didn't understand. It hurt, it hurt so much, but he had warned her that it would. Still, Doll wasn't prepared for this sort of ache, a hollowness that stretched into her bones, making her feel like her tether to the world was far too thin. "Bear with us Loretta," she could hear Doctor Atarashi, he was working, attempting to make the tether a bit more solid. Doll couldn't reply or move, there was a tube in her throat, up her nose, wires everywhere. She felt more machine than human, no amount of medicine making the pain lessen.

Finally there was something, a burning sensation and then the release of sleep. There was internal damage, as expected, and burns that ran deep. The Matriarch had used some sort of shock therapy, that much was obvious, but the other things weren't so apparent. The damage ran deep though and they had to be extra careful due to Doll's-er-unique disposition. They were in there another two hours, cutting, fixing, sewing. Several packets of blood had been used, their empty containers discarded. It was a mix of human and Being blood, one one had stopped working they used the other.

Finally, it was done. The battle wasn't over yet, but this part was finished. They could move Loretta to a room from here, monitor her until her vitals became a bit more stable. They couldn't take her back to America, not until she healed. The simple act of moving her, transferring her from the OR to a room was risky, but they needed this space and it wasn't exactly the most sterile either. So Doctor Atarashi helped with bated breath as they moved her from a gurney to a bed, setting up the machines and taking her away.

He went to find Zero, knowing that the boy would want to go to her side as soon as possible. He found Zero on the ground, Ren attempting to call him back. "What happened?" Doctor Atarashi asked, kneeling down, checking Zero's pulse and heart. The good news would have to wait, first they had to get Zero to a room of his own.

What the hell is going on? Just moments ago Zero was fine, well, maybe not fine, but he was on his feet. Now he's dead weight over his shoulder, because Ren refused to let him lie there on the floor. Even when the being in the lab coat—Doc, showed up, checking Zero's pulse.

Doc asked what'd happened.

"I don't know."

He dragged him out to an empty room, there was a bed, Ren laid him there.

"I can't lose you again, not like this. " The words left him sharp and tense; he didn't know how else to help. What to do. Zero lay there too still, his pulse wasn't ahead of his as it should, his body wasn't hotter, it was like touching a stone and trying to coax it to life.

"Is everything okay?" A scrub. At the door, watching them.

"Yeah, we're fine." Because they had to be, right? He reached out to pluck the ear piece from Zero's ear and brought it to his, listened, "Hey, what's going on?" He tried not to yell but old habits.

"Ren?" Maria asked. She sounded tired.

"Yeah."

"We have a situation."

"No shit, my brother's out and Loretta is still fighting for her—"

"Maddox escaped."

Did he hear that right? No, that's not fucking possible, they had her. "What?"

"She's on the wind, but she left a message."

Ren held his breath as he listened but the world seemed to fall apart. Nothing was going right, everything was messed up.

"And that is...?"

"Game on."

Did she do something to Zero? To Loretta? What did that mean?

"Maria, where were her last coordinates? I need you to send them to me, now."

"Working on it, you have access to any—"

"Yes, Doc's phone." He swiped it soon as he had the chance, he flicked it open and the crystal screen brightened to life, sequences and programs running at the speed of his thoughts, controlled by his power. Doc runs way too many programs here, he shut them down and accessed the message app, paused.

"What are you going to do?" The sound of fear, or apprehension thickened her voice.

"Let me worry about that."

"Something's not right," The Doctor mumbled. He went to get a few supplies, returning to start an IV. "Ren I'm going to explain everything to you alright?" This way the boy wouldn't get freaked out. "I'm starting an IV to give a round of methelprednisone, that way if there's any infection in the body this will pretty much guarantee it being wiped out." The Doctor did that first, "next I'm going to put Zero on oxygen, his levels are low so this will help bring it back up." A tube that went through the nose nad into the lungs, he tapped it into place. Dr. Atarashi was expecting some sort of fight from Zero, but the boy was like a rock.

"Next I'm giving him a shot of adrenaline, this will make him go into fight or flight mode if it does work at all which is why I've tied him down. I'm going to need your help if he wakes up to get him to calm down and explain what's happening." He held the needle up to the light, leaning down and injecting it straight into the big blue, an artery in the neck. "Come on Zero, your brother and friend need you." He murmured, "Loretta's waiting for you after all." Ren was too, but the Doctor wasn't sure how close Zero was with Ren after all this time.

Dr. Atarashi took off his gloves, "I've got him hooked up to a machine that'll read his vitals if anything changes. I'm counting on you to come get if anything happens." There was a mound of paperwork a mile high waiting for Doctor Atarashi. A certain red haired character took his place, sitting in a chair. "How's he doing?" Grell asked, clearly concerned.

Doc went to work on bringing Zero back and Ren just watched. What was he doing? But the other explained it all, and Ren turned his gaze to to the machine with the bp lines. More straight lines with little blips too few and far between. Ren touched his chest and registered the jerky pulse. He countered it with a brief shock and it stuttered, the adrenaline caused the pulse to hike a few times, then it dropped.

Ren took a step back and watched him then the machine, it wasn't picking up. Not again. He reached for the drawers and looked in, he snatched up one of the needles from inside. He ran out.

Loretta was in another room, hooked to even more machines, up but alive. Thank goodness. His brother needed to know that and he couldn't if he shut himself down. That was his best guess, either that or somethinf else was. Approaching he tore the plastic open and went to Loretta's side.

"I'm gonna need something from you Miss. This is all I can think to do."

He wiped the inside of her arm with a small alchohol pad thing before he slid the needle into her arm with care, withdrew as much blood as the needle could hold. When he took the syringe out he covered the little do of red with the bandage.

Back in Zero's room he took hold of his arm and loosened the binds. He accessed the vein and injected. Then he stood back, waited.

The beeping should have been stronger, faster, like his but even more. The trembling lines hiked up, one after another, Ren glanced at Zero who shook, his muscles spasmed, the organ inside thirsted his chest out, hard and fast as his own startled heart.

Zero's hands changed, the once human fingers sharpened into claws and his eyes snapped open, the pupils lengthened, irises blazed deep crimson and he gasped for breath.

He looked at him, Ren just stared.

Despite his obvious attempt to move, the binds grew taut he tried to tear at them. Ren gripped at his wrist an pinned it down against him.

"Zero."

He met his eyes and for what felt like forever they froze there, staring. Ren brushed Zero's hair back, he wasn't cold to the touch and he sighed. That's a good sign.

"..." Zero fell back into the bed, the blood red dulled back to its original mercury. He let go a deep breath and Ren watched as he slipped away.

He slowly let go, and Zero's hand was normal, and the blips came fast and true, then slowed a little but only because that happened when they slept. He gripped the metal bar from the bed, "I think... we're safe now."

She couldn't breathe, but she needed to go, to get up, to find someone. Her mind wouldn't let her rest, she was wound up like a toy ready to spring. It set the alarm off and caused the nurse to come running. They said something about a seizure and injected something cold into her veins. The coldness turned to burning and then eventually numbed. It was terrible being trapped inside of a body that couldn't move. Her mind felt like it wanted to break through and it made her head hurt. Everything hurt though, but it felt like a knife searing into her brain. "Do you see these red lines?" A Doctor was pointing out to the nurse, it was a special monitor made to detect brain activity. "This means pain," he went through drawers. Doll could only see and not here, but he was right, it hurt so much.

Not as much as being separated from him though. "We want the lines to be green," he explained, the lines connected to her tugging and then another shot of cold. Finally her conscious could rest, the medicine whisking her away to a land where there were only dreams. "Someone should get Atarashi's kid. Speaking might help." It was said that sometimes the voice of loved ones could light the way for lost souls. "The longer she sleeps the less likely it is she'll wake." The brain activity monitor continued to show slight sips of red. It was something at least and it gave them hope.

Doll had somehow ended up outside her body, freed from the vessel that walked the earth. She could see herself sleeping, Doctor's scrambling around the body as it went into cardiac arrest again. Doll exited the room, searching. She could see the little boy with white hair who looked startlingly like his brother go into another room. That couldn't be right, Zero had said his brother was dead and yet there he was. Perhaps he was a ghost too.

Doll went to Zero's side, watching as monitors greedily took his pulse, heart rate, oxygen levels. She wanted so badly to reach out and touch him, but felt as if she had no right to do so. "Zero," Doll whispered. "Please be alright."

"... I have to... Find..." Zero's voice, he was awake? When? The hand he'd been holding ripped at binds and wires, another alarm to add the cacophony that have been going off non-stop. It hasn't been an hour, he shouldn't be standing.

"Whoa, hey, Zero what are you...?" He grabbed at his arm, "Don't move, c'mon."

Zero pushed, his breaths ragged, his stance unsteady.

"...Save her... I want to..." Zero cringed and he collapsed, Ren dragged him back.

"Stay." Ren said, tying at his arms, but Zero moved, rolled out the bed and hit the floor.

"Zero."

He was up and running.

"Hey!"

Where did that come from? Ren didn't think, he just followed after, down the long corridor, passed scrubs and nurses in white who were all hesitant and confused. Bet they never had a patient like Zero before.

In the room where Loretta was, Zero stood beside her, his shaky hand touched the top of her head. His eyes hidden beneath the shadows of his wild hair, his jaw worked, his body swayed and he reached for the metal bar, clutched it tight.

The nurses and other staff scattered back, they didn't dare approach. Zero's vectors kept them back as if they were threats.

"Zero, we should go. Let them do their job." Ren said, what the hell was he thinking? She'd die if she kept going into shock. There was a limit to how much a person could take. Even if they were half being. And wouldn't his presence only cause her more distress? Did he forget Maddox's influence? Speaking of which, he had to go and figure out where she went. Maria had already sent the coordinates.

Zero would want him too.

His brother stood there for a long time, his fingers lost in her tangled hair, stroking it with such tenderness. She must have taught him that, how to be gentle. "...Live." Barely a whisper, then his hand fell away and he turned and he stumbled and Ren shot forward despite the swipe of his vectors he couldn't control and grabbed him before he hit the floor. The vectors trembled and pulsed, stole his strength. They reabsorbed into him and his body fell limp. Ren gripped him tight and dragged him out only for Zero to suddenly move, up again?

Ren whirled back, Zero staggered toward one of those long chairs and slumped into it. He'd have to be moved back eventually.

"It's alright." Ren reassured the nurses, "It's safe." He picked up a folded blanket and draped it over Zero who snored softly, his body angled toward her, his face half buried in his arms. It reminded him of moths drawn to light. Or plants, they couldn't survive without their sun.

Xavier was kept in a room away from the Beings. They had locked him there, like an animal that needed to be kept in a cage. Such was the life of a human, technically free, but never truly. Someone came to visit him, a man named Doctor Atarashi. He took a seat, but Xavier stayed on the ground. "It was very brave of you to run away." Dr. Atarashi spoke, a file placed on the table. Curiosity killed the cat and so Xavier stood, seeing that the file was his own. He sat back down in the chair, leaning back, "Yeah, whatever. I just didn't want to be Lord Grace's precious pet any longer." Xavier made air quotes, he wasn't precious, the only reason Lord Grace has chosen him was for the heterochromia.

"Your genetic mutation makes you valuable." Dr. Atarashi folded his hands, so calm that Xavier wanted to punch him. "I can't just let you leave, they'll hunt you down." Xavier's stomach dropped, prisoner again. "I'll take you back to America with me, then you can run." He sighed in relief.

"Thanks mate," he closed his eyes, rubbing his temples. "How's the girl doing?"

"Oh?"

"Am I not allowed to know?" Dr. Atarashi shook his head, "That's not it." The Doctor replied, "it's just a curious thing to see that you actually care and didn't use saving her for your own self gain." Xavier shrugged, looking away. "Yes, well, humans have to help one another out and all that." He shrugged again, looking back at him.

"She's not stable yet, but she's alive. For now."

"Oh." Xavier suddenly grew uncomfortable, he loosened the collar of his shirt, "He's with her though, right? The white haired kid I mean." The Doctor nodded his head, "Yes, Zero's always with her." He smiled just a bit, "he has no mind when it comes to taking care of himself, but if someone he loves is involved, all hell breaks loose."

Doll hesitated, she leaned against the wall, then reached forward, running a hand through Zero's hair. It did nothing of course, but it brought her slight comfort to be beside him. Her body seemed to sense his presence too, his warmth. "Zero, you need to take care of yourself too." Doll sank to sit beside him, leaning her head against his sleeping form.

"I wouldn't want to wake up to a world without you."

He should have waited. But there wasn't any time. And their target would get away; they'd lose their only lead. He left a note, a simple one, tucked it under the pillow he'd slid beneath Zero's head. One more glance back, maybe it was his last who knows? If it was he wanted to remember Zero at peace. He turned away before he could regret it. Left.

Down the corridors, passing their wary gazes, out of base and its security fields. The winter airs struck him with the tangle of snow, he approached one of the parked cars and rested his hand over its metallic form.

The car's door unlocked, purred to life. He went in amd sent the vehicle out into the snowy depths, leaving everything behind. There was only the voice in his head and the drive deep inside him. He had to do this, he would be useful too. He would make things right, close the chapter and burn the book.

"How are you going to find her if those roads are blocked? It's undergoing investigation Ren, she killed the transport agents, had others working for her."

Maria worried too much, "You're beginning to grate my ears, I know how to track, how do you think I found Zero?"

He was met with silence, "Why did it take that long?"

Ren glared ahead, these drivers suck. But I couldn't manipulate them away, he had to keep his focus on the trace. "... I had some affairs that require my attention, not the story I'm up for telling."

"Zero know?"

"He's indisposed. So I'm filling for him."

" You better get use to company, I'm not sending you on the witch-hunt solo."

Ren shot forward soon as he got the clearance, he wanted to cover as much ground as possible in case Zero happened to wake. Though he doubted it, Zero was too worried about Loretta, had he tagged along their chances of making it would suffer. The distraction would kill them both. So for now he'd let them be, they had enough to deal with anyways.

Ren was looking forward to meeting Maddox, the thrill of the hunt burned in his veins. Just as he'd handled their last batch of enemies, he'd deal with her the same. Beings like her didn't deserve second chances, trials or even life behind bars. No, they needed to suffer the same or even worse torment they'd given. They were gonna pay.

Zero was no longer in the room, no, he was some place else. The yielding beneath him with its grains, the scent of salt and briny waters suggested the beach. He stared across at the deep velvet sky, how the moon pulsed agaisnt the night alive and lit. He wanted to reach for it, hold it.

But he was stuck on the ground.

The rocky shoreline was rather quant, the waves beckoned as if they were old friends and he stood. His steps unsteady, unused to the trek across the uneven patches of sand.

"...I haven't touched the beach... In years." He approa hed the waters looked down and he saw that his feet were smaller, so were his hands. He wore a black robe, strange. But it was soft at least. He felt up his throat and something metallic shocked him.

"Collared... But why?"

"You keep running away Zero, it's to keep you safe." A voice said.

Zero touched the collar and recoile his fingers when it rejected his advance.

"It hurts."

Then he looks up and there was a lady, her long are hair and bright red smile mad him shivver.

"Oh dear, little one, dont you worry your precious heart." She rest her hand over his head, stroked at his locks, "I protect my toys."

Doll watched Ren go. She stood, walking behind him, his pace brisk. "Hey, wait!" She called, her ethereal form seemingly as clumsy as her actual one. She tripped on nothing, falling flat on her face. Doll sat up, watching as he left the building. "Where are you going!" He was important to Zero, Doll believed. If this was the little brother Zero loved so much, she couldn't simply allow him to go. Doll couldn't go past the doors though, her not-so-alive existence seemed to be tethered to this building.

She was pulled back, one blink and she had been returned to the room, slowly fading as she became trapped inside of her body once more.

When Doll regained consciousness, she was laying on a table, strapped down. There were electrodes stuck to her body, these ones pulsing with electricity that would shock her should she move around too much. Madame Maddox stood over her, holding a picture of Zero, "This boy, he gave you up."

"No." It was a whimper, a shock filling her body that left her breathless. "He hates you."

"No!" It was worse this time, the amount upping each time she denied that he would hurt her. So she tried something else, pulling off the electrodes and sinking her teeth into Doll's flesh, her hands stroking the girl's body. "I won't reject you." She said after swallowing a mouthful of blood.

"Just give in, the Madame will be your owner now."

But he didn't like collars. He never did. But the lady smiled and wrapped him in the warm embrace, "My dear one, I am sad when yo make such an unpleasant face."

She pouted. He hand paused from steokin his hair, "Don't you like my smile, beautiful as the moon, as the sun is it not?"

"I like smiles."

She brightened and pulled him close, her voice squeeled in glee, "Oh Zero-run you're so cute."

How did she...?

Zero froze, every cell in his body revved up and that caused the world around him to shift. Shake and tumble, "No one knows that name... No one alive."

She clutched him to her breast, "Really?"

"What do you want, why are you here?"

"I just want you all to myself, Zero-rin," He could practically hear her smile, "and I always get what you want."

Zero tried to pull back, looknat her. His heart roared in his chest and he pushed again, harder. "It hurts, let me go. Please."

"You jave your manners, good, I won't have to teach them." She gripped his face with her lilly white hands, upturned his face so that they were eye-to-eye.

"You can't escape me, one day you will come to me. And I will have you dearest."

"I won't. No today."

He tore away an ran, ran until his world turned white and he was in a room, no a hospital. He took a deep breath and startled to his feet, looking around and there was a piece of folder paper on the floor.

Loretta hooked to machines, she was still under. He reached for her hand before he remembered, she wouldnt like his touch.

Even in sleep his warmth reached her, his presence enough to make the brain activity monitor flicker with a streak of green. She was trying to reach him, tell him that it was okay. Perhaps falling from the window and banging her head had done more good than bad. Dr. Atarashi entered, Xavier right behind him. "Looks more robot than human," he mumbled, then shook his head as though realizing he had just uttered that thought aloud. "Sorry mate, didn't think I actually spoke that." He scratched the back of his head, hoping that Zero wouldn't take his comment to heart.

"I'm sure she'll wake up. She kept calling for you when I was carrying her back." Xavier put his hands back down at his sides. "Zero, I'm glad see you're up and walking around again." Dr. Atarashi said as he pulled on a pair of gloves to check something. He walked up, turning Zero's face. "It's good that you didn't pull the oxygen tube out, you could've hurt yourself. Would you like me to remove it or are you going to have another fit?" He noticed Zero's hesitance, he was awfully far away from Loretta.

"You should talk to her." He said quietly, "I'm sure she wants to hear from you the most. Explain what's happened, why she's here, the weather, anything. Sometimes it helps if they hear their loved ones your voice." He pulled off the gloves, checking the machines. "The longer she sleeps, the less likely she'll wake up." There was already a lot of damage, no doubt Loretta wouldn't be able to walk for a while, she really would be a doll if she did wake up.

Zero glanced back, he sensed Doc. His presence, the crack of lightning, the glimpse of fury barely contained behind his specs hidden under the normal white of his lab coat.  A shadow followed, Xavier the boy tasting freedom for the first time. He made a comment, the words prickled agaisnt Zero, he glared.

"You shut your pie hole."

Kid had lots to learn.

But then he expressed something that made Zero hit the brakes. Loretta remembered him?

Zero fell still when Doc touched him, turned his face up. Said something about an oxygen tube thing, wanted to take it out.

"Do what you have to do." He sunk into the chair, waited for Doc to take off the oxygen tube. He would have done it himself but he didn't know how.

Doc said Loretta shouldn't be sleeping so much, that it wouldn't do her well. Maybe they needed her awake to make her better. Who knows. As for talking to her, was it ok to? What if she didn't hear him or if his words never reached her?

He turned to her bed, she was an angel, ensrared. He took one step, another until he was next to her, close enough to touch. Loretta breathed and dreamed so far away.

Zero reached out to feel the soft strands of her hair. They were gold under the sunlight streaming through the window, reflecting. The beeps and hums of machines the only other signs that yes, she's still kickin'.

He let his touch flow down to her wrist, he turned her hand and opened the fingers so he could see them, as if her fingers were petals waking for the sun. He traced her hand's life line, hovered above her skin in the air.

"Gypsies read your fortune and tell you your whole life is right there, written before you were born."

Maybe he could decypher the secret language, see what lies before her.

"When you wake, when there is time, you can learn about God, learn about Christmas, where it comes from. What it means. Why it still exists, even if it's not the same for everyone." He counted the lines, followed its path along the plain of her open palm.

"Then we can celebrate it, because you'd know why, and maybe believe in this faith that exists for people. To have someone to believe in... It's good. Very good."

What else could he say? What more is there to say?

He sat down on the long chair. Finally he rested his hand in the cup of hers, remembered the first day he met her, when he offered her his and a promise that crumbled because he couldn't keep her safe.

"We can't go to Africa, or Alaska, if you don't open your eyes. You can't see it, marvel at it, ask about the zebras and why they have stripes, or the polar bears and why they'are so white." He rested his head on the edge of her bed and closed his eyes, maybe he'd sleep to. Maybe he could find her in dreams.

"I won't go without you." He whispered.
