"How about a nice game of chess?"

Description

Name: [i] Arthur T.
Image

Age: 10

Gender: Technically N/A, but let's call him "Male" for simplicity's sake.

Race: Android

Appearance: Arthur is somewhat human looking, if it weren't for the fact that he was incomplete. His body, or shall we say chassis, is mostly human, but many parts were not finished, the most obvious being the left side of his face, which was left as a wad of exposed cogs and wires. To protect his inner wiring he wears large, metal plates over these spots like armor, giving him a somewhat awkward look. His movements are also clunky, and you can see him frequently pouring oil into his joints. He's 5'9" with black hair and bright orange eyes and a lanky figure. Unlike many of his robot cousins, he isn't actually much stronger than a normal human.

Clothing: He usually wears one of the professor's old, fur coats and black pants. The coat is a few sizes too big, but it works out since it dutifully covers up his "armor". His clothing is always covered in oil and grease though, giving him a shady look.

Occupation: Arthur, having a lot of knowledge stored in his circuitry, acts as the store's encyclopedia and computer (The term computer was coined in the 1600s, so it's not too new).

Relation to cafe: He was one of the fully robotic androids the professor created. When most of the machines went berserk and escaped, he decided to stay. Now he works with the other maids, doing all the calculating work.

Weapon(s): None.

Goals/Ideals: Attempts at giving him emotions failed for the most part, so he doesn't have many real morals or goals. But he does have logic, making his only real goal, like any robot, the creation of a logically perfect world. Although Arthur concluded that this is logically impossible, he still dreams of it (sort of).

Alignment: Neutral

Personality: Arthur lacks many emotions, but he does have a distinct personality. He is quite impatient, and doesn't really tolerate clumsiness or inefficiency. He also dislikes people in general, as it seems. Basically, you could see him as the "grumpy old guy." He does show curiosity though, especially when it turns out that something is missing from his data banks. Sometimes he might disappear for days to find the answer to a question only to come back all ragged and broken. In this sense, you could also call Arthur very stubborn and proud.

Background: Arthur doesn't know if he was one of the older creations, acting just as a prototype and eventually forgotten, or one of the newer ones, never completed after the professor's death. This is because his memory banks were completely wiped for some reason shortly after the murder. He remembers everything else, though, perfectly. After the professor's murder, the "smart" steamborgs, androids, and whatnot decided to leave since their "oppressive creator" was now gone, and the "dumb" ones followed in suit. Arthur, on the other hand, lacked the emotional receptors to really care, and decided just to stay. At first the other maids locked him up, scared that he would attack them as well. Soon enough they let him go, seeing that it was almost impossible for him to mean harm. Now he works at the cafe, managing their money and acting as the new "manager" in a way.

So begins...

Arthur was quietly reading the newspaper at one of the tables in the cafe. He often hung out there in the morning to make sure nobody was slacking off. It was also at those kinds of times that Arthur thinks a lot. Complex, philosophical things, like the creation of the world, the limits of space, religion, and he always wonders about true robotic sentience. Can robots truly have feelings or are they simply illusions, created by a database of expected human reactions? And what about steamborgs? At which point does man become machine? He quietly ponders these things while the maids set up shop, and never finds an answer to them. But that was what made it enjoyable, or at the very least it was better than doing nothing.

Today was another one of those days. As he leisurely added the contents of the morning paper to his database, he began to think once more. This time he went to the nice topic of unsolvable formulas. He went through the list, seeing why were they unsolvable, possible theorems he could use to solve them. The usual, until he suddenly had a breakthrough. A newly created theorem had fit perfectly into an age-old equation that scholars had tried for centuries to solve. Could he be onto something? He quickly ran the calculations, and right as he was about to come to the answer (and overheat), the door swung open and the cheery Nadia came in.

"Good morning, everybody." And just like that, it was lost. A discovery that could have revolutionized the world of mathematics, lost because of his faulty memory banks and a maid... But there wasn't anything to do about, work came first. "Morning... Nadia." He replied in his monotone, robotic voice.

Arthur slowly put away his paper, having finished "scanning" it. Nadia was as cheery as ever, which brought back up the idea of sentience of robots. Why is she, being almost all robot, so cheery and emotional and...Human, compared to him? Sure she kept her brain intact, but the professor was able to mimic a brain quite well. So why? But he decided to leave it. Until another genius like the professor comes around, none of those questions will be answered any time soon. "Glad to see that you're well, Nadia, and that you're... In good health, Anneliese." His makeshift voice box struggled to form the last syllable of her name, "Don't waste your time on something so, unimportant. It is not as if I will be catering to any customers." This was true, as well as the fact that it wasn't like he cared much for what he looked like anyways. "Yes, we should go to Dublin, out supplies are running low. But let us leave the hunt for another time, I calculate that this month will be particularly busy, and we have many debts to pay."

Anneliese pushed the plate away, got up from the table, and began walking towards Arthur and Nadia. "Why do they keep coming back? Are we truly worth all the trouble we cause?" She asks. Anneliese hated the loan-sharks. She could not really call them up and complain about the loan sharks to customer service, but they still got on her nerves. The thought quickly disappeared, as a new thought popped in her head. Anneliese turns to face Nadia.
"Would the meat pies really taste that good? How do you know all these things, Nadia?" Anneliese asks. She was equally confused as she was serious about the question.

Arthur let out an exasperated sigh and said, "We would not be in this debt if the people here cared more about their jobs and not about such needless things. I do not understand why it is our duty to stop those robotic abominations that roam the forest, let the authorities take care of them. And as for the loan collectors, please refrain from doing anything hasty. I don't want to have keep to convincing the police your violent tendencies are acts of 'self-defense'." Arthur was quite angry at the two of them and their frivolous nature. Maybe he was being cold, but he completely believes in everything he said. He didn't want to be involved in these "hunts" and would rather have everyone simply pay back the debts. Would it be that hard? Apparently yes.

"Now, we have a lot of work to do right now for the cafe. There is the matter of supplies and payroll and..." Arthur ranted on for a while. He did this from time to time whenever the maids really annoyed him. He knew from experience they probably weren't listening, so halfway through he stopped and said, "Sigh, anyways, shall we go?"

Every single time Nadia transformed it amazed Arthur. It was pretty much impossible to even imagine her being human in the first place, if you didn't know about her bubbly personality. But the one thing that surprised him the most is how she even agreed to this in the first place. She used to be a normal human girl, and now she isn't even human anymore. She can no longer be human, any possible "normal" life was basically taken away. Is this what she really wanted? Was this all OK to her? Sometimes Arthur wonders if the professor tweaked with her brain a bit before the operation... But of course he could not believe that. Nadia was always so happy that it was impossible to think she was suffering because of her body. So, he nonchalantly climbed aboard the Nadia Express. "Try not to move too roughly, please."

Anneliese was very excited about the trip. She adored going on outings with everyone but it was a very rare thing to do. She grew even more eager to go when she saw Nadia, in a different form, call out to the two from outside the building. "Away to adventure!" She yells happily, before giggling like a child. Anneliese looked up and noticed Arthur climbing into the 'car', and she quickly chased after him. "Wait, wait. I am coming!" She yells quickly, before catching up to them, and stepping on board. "I'm ready. Let's go!" She yells happily, waiting to get going.

"I was planning to find new innovations to invest in."
"Again?" Arthur did not mind Nadia's love/obsession with machines and technology, but sometimes it got out of hand, especially when it came to investing. Every time she found something even vaguely interesting or barely helpful, she would invest a whole chunk of money into it. "Can we please refrain from any risky ventures until we are out of debt?" Of course, not all of Nadia's ventures were bad, the thousand she invested in that coolant venture was a big hit, and helped them a lot. But with their debt as bad as it was, Arthur really did not want to take any risks. "As for what I want to do now, I would like to return to the cafe. We have a lot of preparing to do, and I would feel much better if I were there to oversee it. We have everything we need." Arthur was being a workaholic as always, but the cafe needed someone to keep it in line.

Anneliese felt as if she had chose either her brother or her sister, which was a very awkward spot for her to be in. She was looking back and forth among Nadia and Arthur, until something caught her eye in the middle of the two. She saw a butterfly, flying overhead of the crowd. She leaped out of the Vehicle, and started running in the direction of the butterfly, pretty fast too. She was swerving in and out of the people walking so she did not bump into anyone. She chased the bug very far, until another thing caught her eye. It was all the weird and crazy things people would bring and sell. She would go to every stall and buy, if she could, the weirdest and most useless things. Since she had no money on her currently, she merely looked.
