Introduction
In the land of Britannia there are sparkling warriors of purity and goodness known to the populous at large as magical girls. These sparkling maidens have defended the country from monsters and demons for as far back as people can remember. No one knows where the demons and monster originated from although theories abound. All anyone knows is that many centuries ago when the demons and monsters first appeared and began to ravage the land it was not long before the first magical girls also appeared to battle them. At their sides their loyal companions known as Mascots.
Typically a girl is βrecruitedβ between the ages of 12 and 13 although rarely a 14 year old is recruited as well. Their tenure as magical girls is not overly long and as they get older they slowly lose their humanity although it is a subtle transition for the most part until their 17th year. By this point they are becoming noticeably more violent and typically at some point within their 17th year they drop dead, the magic that allowed them to grab a few more years of life spent.
At least this is the common explanation for why there are no magical girls above the age of 17. The truth of the matter is that as a magical girl ages she loses portions humanity, slowly at first but by her 17th year she begins to lose her humanity rapidly until she is ultimately transformed into a demon and hunted down by her former compatriots.
Typically a Mascot will serve one magical girl but occasionally youβll see a Mascot with two or three magical girls.
The Mascots live for a very long time but eventually they two fade away to be replaced with new Mascots. Although the exact lifespan of a Mascot is unknown and seems to vary from Mascot to Mascot.
What the public (and the magical girls) do not know is that all Mascots were themselves once human girls (or rarely boys) who made a pact with dark magical forces in an effort to commit suicide. For some reason or another each of the Mascots wished to commit suicide and were stopped by a magical force that offered to take away their pain if they agreed to recruit innocent girls to be magical girls. The Mascots all agreed and were transformed into their cutesy animal form and given the ability to recruit magical girls. They are given a specific βquotaβ so to speak of magical girls they must recruit before they are allowed to rest in peace.
They can be killed and when they are killed the souls of the magical girls are released.
Monsters are Mascots that did not uphold their end of the bargain, or people who died with pure rage in their hearts (or rarely just a physical manifestation of some dark emotion of humanity at large). For the most part they are vaguely animal like in appearance and have a wide variety of powers. Their intelligence level again varies from mindless beast to cold cunning.
Some Monsters can be killed (the ones who are the manifestation of some strong emotion or just a dark aura of a place and those who are people who died with rage in their hearts). Mascots who have been transformed into Monsters do not die in the final sense. They can be killed or banished but they always are reborn, usually in a weakened state.
They typically patrol in pairs of two (magical girls) when out fighting demons, although if there is a large scale attack multiple girls will join forces.
The girls all live at the Hall of Virtues, the magical girl headquarters for Saxon. It is a large ornate building located in the upper class district of the city. It is houses itβs own kitchens, dining room, ballroom, training rooms, library, and indoor pool. There is also a indoor theater and a large game room. The girls all reside on the upper floor in lavish rooms. (depending on the number of girls currently residing within the hall rooms either house a single girl or a pair of girls). There is also a large private grounds surrounding the Hall that at times can be opened to the public as a park. The Hall itself is off limits to civilians except by appointment (in the case of government officials or the press).
Mascots also reside full-time within the city and the Hall of Virtues, they tend to stay in the same rooms as their girls and are seen accompanying their various charges around the city.
As all magical girls are found either on the brink of death or directly after death for the most part they chose not to keep up with their civilian identities (it is strongly encouraged that they remain within the Hall of Virtues). While they can go back to their families it is not advised as the older they get the more dangerous they will be to be around.
This is not to say that some girls donβt remain with their families but no girl is allowed to remain with her family during her 17th year. They are also forbidden to share their magical girl identities with their civilian families or their civilian identity with the public.
They can tell one another their civilian identities if they so choose and they can walk the city in their civilian forms (typically under a magical disguise). Within the Hall of Virtues they may wander around in their civilian forms at will and often take advantage of this freedom to act like regular girls.
