New York City

Image

Welcome to New York City. Starving artists and rich CEO's alike call this place home. In New York City, there is also a small, hidden apartment with a surprisingly nice interior. On the fourth floor, there are four rooms in a row. Numbers eight, nine, ten, and eleven. These rooms hold somethings, or someones, to be exact, that aren't from Earth. When they wake, things will change. A lot of things.

Image

Plot
In the urban kingdom of Highwaters, people are talented. They can control the elements, or make things just by thinking about making them, or turn into exact replicas of their friends. Many of the most talented people from there went missing just last night. After they went to bed, there was a lightning storm that struck the capital city with brute force. Afterwards, people were missing. Gone, without a trace. Eight of them woke up in New York City. Next to a person. When they woke up, their minds were flooded with memories. Childhood friends, romances, jobs, and schooling were some of the things they learned about themselves. Now they have memories of two different people, their different lives starting to merge into one. To return to their real families and sort out their lives, they must figure out how to separate their Earth selves and their Highwaters selves. To do that, they must find the person that sent them there.

Della Decanay

Image
Della strode over to her family, and plopped down in the chair by the fireplace, the same one she had been sitting in since she was six. She talked and laughed with her family for a few hours, truly enjoying the company. After eating an entire bag of marshmallows, Della excused herself and went to bed, falling into her giant mattress without bothering to change into her pajamas.

Della awoke what seemed like a few minutes later, but she knew it had been at least eight hours. She stretched out, and suddenly stopped. She put her hands on the bed, and pushed down. She couldn't feel the ground, like she could in her bed. She slowly got up, and turned around, preparing to fight with whatever she could get her hands on. She turned around to find something, and looked down to see that she definitely wasn't wearing her clothes. She was wearing a giant sweater, and polka-dot printed shorts. Even more frightened, she climbed out of bed and crept around a corner. Not seeing anybody, she relaxed against a counter, breathing heavily. Suddenly, memories of another life, another her, came rushing into her mind. She stayed in a shocked position for what seemed like hours. Once her mental refresh was finished, she went over to what she now knew was her closet, and grabbed a random dress and some shoes. She stopped in front of the floor-length mirror to look at her outfit, and then rushed into the hallway, convincing herself that she wasn't alone. She couldn't be alone. That would mean that she had to navigate this city all alone. I have to get back. I need to find somebody to get me back, Della thought, desperation slowly taking over.

ImageFinn groaned, flopping face-first down onto a thin, stained mattress. Not even taking the time to throw the worn blanket over his sweaty t-shirt and grimy shorts, Finn smiled into the dusty pillow contentedly. Having taken a night shift working maintenance in one of Highwater’s many inns, Finn had been, for the last five hours, clunking around rather unskillfully in the building’s outdated boiler room, trying to understand why anyone would bother sticking with an antiquated boiler rather than just replacing it with an electric furnace like any person. After hitting the thing repeatedly with a hammer (which resulted in a number of dents), the thing finally began to work again. Finn had left the room swelling with pride, and had pretended, for the sake of his brief career as a failed technician, to know exactly what he’d been doing. Finally in bed, Finn fell asleep in a matter of minutes, exhausted from a day’s worth of manual labor.

A dreamless sleep broke away to violent rays of sunlight. Frowning and turning his head the other way, Finn squeezed his eyes tight, hoping to stay blissfully unaware of the new day just a little while longer. Suddenly, something fuzzy tickled his nose. Scrunching it, Finn forced himself to open his eyes... and let out a small yell. A blonde mane of hair that caressed a sleeping face was inches away from his own. Pushing back quickly, Finn fell off the bed with another yelp. He looked around, eyes widening as he realized that his surroundings were very different from what they were the night before. Before he could comprehend what he was seeing, Finn was hit with a sudden flash of images. Memories, of a life that was his... but wasn’t, at the same time. With his back against the loft’s wall, Finn pressed his palms into his eyes. His heart was racing. Looking back at the bed, Finn found that he recognized the sleeping figure. It was Ellie. Creeping over to where she slept, Finn stared at the girl, confused. What was going on? There was only one thing to do. Crouching beside her, only now realizing how bad he smelled, Finn poked her in the shoulder gently.

β€œEllie. Ellie, you have to wake up.”

JAMIE BORIS

Image
Jamie liked her job. It got her lots of money, which could then help her afford this amazing apartment. And when you got down to it, it was fun. Jamie loved to plead for cases and please the judge or even just talk with clients. It gave her of sense power that pleased her to no end. But of course even a perfect job had its days were all you wanted to do was curl up in bed with a tub of ice cream and a book. While Jamie rarely had those days when they came they came hard. Just a few hours into her normal work day Jamie found her eyes slipping. She yawned and rubbed at an uncomfortable crick in her neck. It had been a while since Jamie had gotten a decent amount of sleep and as her vision began to blur as she stared at an document she decided it would be best to take a nap. She barely mad it to the bed before falling asleep.

What seemed like minutes but could only be hours passed by and Jamie woke with a start. She groaned but sat up, ready to finish the work she had started only to let out a yelp of surprise when she was in fact, not in her room. Panicking she could only sit back as a flash of memories her memories hit her. It felt her, but it couldn't...right? Heart beating fast she stood to gather her courage, only to topple over a sleeping figure. She yelped and glared back at the man.

'Hey!' She said nudging him in the side, 'Wake up!'

ImageElizabeth padded into her house after a long day of work. She didn't use her power to her advantage. Most of the time... She hummed to herself as she trodden around her house, almost resembling a mother duck but without her ducklings. She made a quick dinner of chicken and rice soup then went to clean herself. She took a long hot shower. Some might think that her hair would be straight and flat but no... The absolute mess that she called her hair poofed out just as much as it did when it was dry. She dressed and made her way around the house in a pair of shorts that had ducks all over the and especially a yellow bra. She yawned lightly then started humming again. She plopped down on her yellow sheeted bed and slowly closed her eyes.

She awoke in warmth. Covers enveloped her almost as if they were pulling her into another dimension. But little to her knowledge is that she already was in another dimension. Her blonde mane that was splattered across the entirety of her pillow and even a little of her bed mate's pillow and face. She heard incoherent mumbling after the thud on the floor. "Five more minutes." She mumbled without thinking, pulling the covers slightly over the blazing mane of gold.

Last night, she ate dinner with her mother and they conversed about their father's absence. She remembered the saddened tone in her mother's voice when Renee asked if she missed him. She remembered the bitter taste of the wine as it touched her lips, and the way the bread melted on her tongue. In a way, she could almost still taste the rare, but cooked steak that was slobbered with juices. She could remember the laughter, the joy, the smile her mother presented as Renee continued to make silly faces over the wine glass. She remembered the fuzziness from the drink and the faintness from her body aching for a good night's rest. Renee remembered kissing her mother's cheek goodnight before climbing the ladder to her bed. The warmth of the blankets had drowned her, snugged her until she allowed herself to succumb to sleep. She was home then. She was safe, and she was home.

This was not her home.

The young woman woke up with a jolt and a small cry escaping her lips. If the nightmare wasn't enough to startle her, waking up in an entirely new environment surely did it for her. She finally caught up with her racing heart, her lightly toned hazel eyes traced around the room. Black and white pictures hung on the far wall above a dark chestnut desk, which sat covered in papers. Her gaze bounced from the desk to the empty space beside her. Her hand gently traced over the crinkled sheet, to the pillow hanging off the side of the mattress. It was warm. The spot was still warm as if someone was sleeping there. Did she share a bed with someone last night? No, she couldn't have. It was improper, unladylike like.

Renee carefully pulled herself from the white sheets and staggered to the desk in front of her. She wore a nightgown, much like the blue one she wore to bed. However, this one is more...see through. She felt exposed almost.

Photographs of little children laid sprawled on the desk, as well as framed pictures. She couldn't help but admire the work. It was beautiful, almost, enchanted. Kody's Korner was imprinted in the corners. Her eyes lifted to a picture on the wall and her jaw dropped. There stood a woman, dressed in dark and yet, alluring colors of clothing with her hair pinned and tied with a ribbon. She was kissing a child's cheek. The young woman in the picture, it looked just like her.

That moment allowed a flash back to the past. She was laughing, giggling with a small child. Kody! Kody! Again, again! The child had plead. Kody? Was that her? She could remember laughing at the child's pleas, as she picked her up and tossed her into the air.

Her name? Dakota..? Kody? It certainly felt familiar, like it was so. Flashbacks of the past flooded her mind, mostly of that child, and of a young man. A rush of warmth flooded her and she caught herself smiling, before glancing over her shoulder at the empty space on her bed. "I don't understand..."

Image"Five more minutes."

Finn felt like groaning. Typical Elizabeth. Normally, he'd leave her alone, but today wasn't exactly what he'd call normal. Frustrated, Finn looked back at the sleeping girl. He knew her, but at the same time, he didn't. This was beyond strange. "Ellie, I swear to god."

Taking a sniff, Finn was suddenly overwhelmed by how disgusting he smelled. Technician oil and sweat still clung to his shirt and skin, making him look more like a monster than a human.

"Crap, I'd better change," Finn said to himself. Grabbing a clean shirt and jeans (his, these were his clothes out of the closet), Finn headed straight to the washroom. Grimacing at his grimy face, Finn changed quickly, throwing his old clothes onto a growing pile of dirty laundry next to the bath. Turning on the sink, he scrubbed his hands clean, and then his face. Looking back up, Finn saw that he'd cleaned most of the grime off his face. It would have to do.

Looking at least a little presentable, and not exactly knowing what to expect, Finn went back to Ellie, who hadn't moved since he'd tried to nudge her awake. Once again, Finn poked her, this time a little bit more harshly and on her cheek.

"Come on, Ellie. Open your eyes for me."

ImageAs if almost on key, the young girls eyes fluttered open, still focusing on the room around her. She looked down at the sheets. They were a crimson red, the color of passion. Wait. These weren't her sheets.... She had bright yellow, the color of a duck and the color that represented happiness and hope. She looked at the walls. They were a creamish color whereas hers were supposed to be orange. She looked at Finn and then pointed to the sheets and the walls. "what did you do while I was sleeping? How did you get in here? Bloody idiot. Couldn't have woke me to tell me that you wanted to paint my walls cream? I had it the perfect shade of orange too." She explained, moving out of the bed to look at the walls while her hand went to try to tame her lion's mane. "What's with your new little sudden bit of creativity huh?" She spoke as if nothing had happened and she was just there in her shorts and bright yellow bra, speaking in her normal thick British accent.

It were nights like that Miles wishes his family wasn’t so well-known. He was forced to be at a ceremony for his fathers’ latest invention. He wasn’t even sure what his father had created, all he knew was that he was wasting his time here when he could’ve been with friends. His father stood at the podium thanking his colleagues and his families support for making all this possible. Miles sat at the table with chin in his hand, trying to keep himself up. He put his down for what he believed to be no longer than a minute and fell asleep.

β€œHey,” Miles felt a nudge in his side that he assumed was his sister warning him that the speech was over and that it was time to go home. β€œWake up!” He groaned and tried to put his head up. But it was then that he realized that he wasn’t asleep at a table, but on a bed. He had no idea. He opened his eyes, and rolled over, falling off the bed with a yelp. The moment he hit the floor, it seemed as though his entire life had disappeared and new one took its place. Memories of a life unknown to Miles flooded his brain, leaving him confused and dazed on the floor.
β€œWhat the hell? Who are you? Where am I? What the hell is going on? Where’s my family?” He looked down at his legs to notice he was no longer wearing a suit, instead he was in an outfit that looked like he spent the night on the town.

β€œDid I-” He looked around very confused about the current situation he was in. β€œDid I sleep with you?” Miles tried to recall who this woman was in front of him but of all the memories that entered his brain when he fell to the floor, she was not one of them.

ImageWhile the man struggled to wake a horrid thought crossed Jamie's mind. Was she drugged and brought here? This man could be a murder out to get her. She took a large step back, gripping the satin of her robe -when did she put on a robe?- and glared warily at him. 'Don't ask me! I haven't the foggiest idea where we are. Or why for that matter. And as for who I am...well it's rather confusing.' The quickened pace of her heart slowed and she finally glanced around the room.

"Did I...did I sleep with you?" Jamie's eyes widened and she crossed her arms protectively over her chest. 'Of course not! I'm not some tramp!' Feeling slightly less imposed she let a questioning tone enter her voice. 'Do you sleep with random women offen?'

It took awhile for the young woman to regain her composure, to find herself and to understand that her life had changed the second she went to sleep. Questions of the past had entered and left her mind as memories of two very different lives drew her to immense confusion. None of it made any sense and her head ached with a throbbing sensation as she sat there, trying to decipher the two lives apart from one another. Sitting there on the floor of the bedroom was the only way to keep her knees from giving way. She remembered Highwater and her role as a stable girl, a trainer, someone who worked well with animals. She remembered the many nights her father left to hunt, to fight for protection, leaving her with her mother in despair for she wished so much that he'd stay longer than a few days out of the month. That was her life. But waking up as she did, she must have woken up with a new life for there was no other reasonable explanation. Except, there was the two ultimate questions... how and why?

She had memories of her mother and father growing together, happily with jobs of a doctor and some sort of book leader, magazine editor? She remembered moving to New York, growing up in an apartment with a small child wandering the hall in diapers. She had a little sister in this life. She had a relative, a sister, who...in the past life, didn't fulfill full term in her mother's womb. She remembered having a grandmother, back then, to watch over the two as both parents worked at ungodly hours. As her eyes traced over her walls, she could tell she had an education, and she remembered moving away from her family to start a life of her own. She had some sort of love interest, didn't she? How else would that explain the warmth beside her on her new found bed? Of course, it wasn't a one night stand...or was it? Was she that kind of girl in this new life of hers? Certainly she'd have some sort of control of that outcome...

A large beeping interrupted her thoughts and Dakota quickly pulled herself to her feet and ran to the alarm beside her bed. She pushed down on the button and sighed heavily. As her eyes fixed on the time, they widened. "Oh! I have to shower!" She exclaimed.

"I'm so late!" She added as she ran into her bathroom, closed the door, hopped into the shower and quickly washed her hair and body. It took at least fifteen minutes for her to return to her room dressed in a towel. But she just stood there. Water puddled around her bare feet on the lightly shade of blue carpet. Why was she late? For what, was she in such a hurry? It took a minute of steady breathing to come to the realization that she had a job. She had her own small business somewhere on Maine and Boulivardez. Her head started throbbing again.

"Too much thinking, just too much." She muttered, throwing open her closet. She felt as if she needed to go on with what her instincts wanted, and perhaps, later on, she'd come to a conclusion on the why, and the how.

Kody dressed herself, easily, much to her surprise. She found a red dress that fell past her waist to just above her knees, a hat to settle upon her pinned hair and an antique-like necklace to wear around her neck. She looked elegant, beautiful and the red lipstick just added a almost seductive touch. It felt like she had done this so many times before, dressed to please one's eyes and herself at the same time.

Finally, she was at her front door, her eyes casing over her apartment. It was sized well with the works; kitchen, dining room, bathroom, bedroom and living quarters. On the island in the kitchen was an empty mug. She remembered the taste of the tea that was once in the glass from the night before, as well as a kiss that was placed upon her lips while the tea was brewed. Her hand absently moved to her lips. "Oh...what life is this?"

"What's with your new little sudden bit of creativity huh?"Image

Finn stared at the girl, confused. "What? Ellie, no, get up. You think I did this? I don't know where the hell we are!" Finn remembered Ellie from back in Highwaters, but it had been months since he'd seen her. They'd had a few short flings, but never anything serious. Every once in a while, he would drop by. Finn was torn from his recollections by a beeping sound emitting from his alarm clock. Crap. He had a job. Since when had Finn had a steady job? With another powerful pulse of pain, flashes of a dusty library filled his head. Ew. He didn't want to go there. But a sudden sense of urgency overwhelmed him.

Finn got up from beside Ellie's bedside and started pacing the room nervously. "This is ridiculous.

Hitting the alarm clock, Finn grabbed a button down to cover his shirt. As he buttoned up, he looked back at the sleeping girl. "Ellie, I don't know what the hell is going on here, but I gotta go. Alright? I'm pretty sure you also have places to be." Finn wracked his aching mind, trying to recall whether Ellie ever really had a job. "Or maybe not."

Stepping out the door of his room, Finn ran to the kitchen and grabbed an apple from a fruit bowl in the middle. The actions were so habitual that Finn didn't even think as he did them. Whirling around to grab his coat off of the couch (he'd dropped it there the night before?) and headed towards the door. Pushing it open, Finn jogged down the hallway towards the elevator. He violently pressed at the elevator button, forcing down confusion and panic in the face of the coming day.

Now this was a whole new journey in itself. Wandering around New York was dangerous enough for someone who knew the environment, but for someone who felt like she was suffering from some form of amnesia, it was a hell of a lot more dangerous and frightening. There she was, dressed up, elegant, lovely, and yet, intriguing. Her eyes traced the different signs until a small sense of familiarity washed over her. All she had to do was cross the street and run down that sidewalk. Sure, not a problem. However, it was a problem with how busy the streets were. She was worried, in fact, her stomach tightened at the loud noises that echoed in her head. She took a deep breath, waited for a clear and quickly, Kody took off across the street and down the sidewalk.

Her heart was pounding as her feet slammed against the sidewalk. She was never, ever going to do that again! Yet, she somehow knew that she had said that once more before, and another before that. Dakota rolled her eyes before she stopped running, taking a deep breath before finally releasing herself in a small bit of laughter. "Oh, I have problems." She whispered.

Right in front of her, was a coffee shop. PickMeUpStation. She smiled, as if this was the answer to her prayers. Fixing her hat, Kody stepped inside and moved to the counter quickly. It was a cozy little coffee shop, that smelled sweet and of caramel. A young woman, blonde with bright blue eyes giggled and shook her head softly.

"Your usual, Kody?"

"My wh..uhm, yes please, do...Kathryn." She said. The name leaving her lips with some hesitation.

"You'll never call me Kitty, will you?" The woman giggled, carefully pouring coffee into a to-go cup. Kody shook her head. She remembered. The young woman was much younger than her, sixteen, seventeen and preferred to be called Kitty, but, finding it different, Kody decided Kathryn was more suitable and proper.

"Well, here it is. Cinnamon and Vanilla coffee with a danish to go. Five-forty please."
Dakota reached into her black bag and pulled out a ten. She slid it to Kathryn carefully and took her coffee. She glanced at the clock. She could spare some time, couldn't she? Maybe only a little...

"Oh, Kathryn, pay for the next customer's coffee with the change, please."

"Of course."

Dakota smiled and made her way to one of the chairs in the corner. She crossed a leg over the other, took a sip of her coffee and the familiar, delicious taste traced her buds. She shook her head. This felt...normal. Yet, new.

ImageEllie was left there, just looking at where the man had once stood. She remembered Highwaters and that she and Finn had been together for a slight time but she had other memories. Of times with Finn that she didn't remember. The house was bigger than her small apartment with 2 bedrooms, 2 baths and an office space along with kitchen, dining and living areas with a small den. She trodded through the house after Finn had left. On the walls there were all sorts of pictures. Some were couples pictures that held Finn and herself inside. Others looked like a recollection of the past collage. You know, like one picture from every year after you were born up until you graduated? There were also diplomas and records on the walls. One of the diplomas read:

'The President, Professors and Trustees of New York University, To all persons to whom this writing may come, Greetings: Be it known that we in recognition of the successful completion of the requisite course of study in our Stienhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. Music and Performing Arts Professions, by virtue of authority granted to us by charter of the State of New York do confer upon Elizabeth Marianne Padden the degree of Master of Music with all the rights, privileges and immunites thereunto appertaining. In witness whereof we have caused this Diploma to be signed by the duly authorized officers of the University and sealed with our corporate seal in the city of New York.'

She took a look at the records and they had her name on them. Apparently she was a singer song writer and that's what allowed her to afford this house... She sighed and then explored the house even more, finding her mobile phone and looking through the contacts. Mary, Rowan, Lily, Finn. Ah! Just who she was looking for. Still not dressed she rang him up on the phone.

Della ran outside, and hailed a cab, whistling as though it was natural, even though she knew that she couldn't whistle. She stepped in the cab and told the driver, "Take me to 8441 on Lymewood and Sun Ray, and hurry, I'm running late," in a sharp tone, and leaned back into the grimy seat, thinking about why she'd be going to Sun Ray Street. Olivia, she thought. Olivia Regis, her ex-boyfriend's adopted daughter. Trent let her visit once every month, and she took advantage of that, letting her stay at her house for a night and watching movies together. Today, though, they had things to do. Trent asked her to take Olivia to get her sixth birthday pictures taken because he had to work, so she and Kody had arranged to have a mini photo shoot to surprise Olivia.

Kody? Della thought, confused for a second. Kody Rinaldi. They were best friends back in Highwaters, and would do everything together. She was a photographer now, and Della often went to her for all of her needs. And she was going to be late if she didn't hurry up. As the cab pulled up to the condo that Trent and Olivia lived in, Della leapt out of the cab, running over to Olivia, mumbling apologies as she ran back to the cab with Olivia now in her arms, only to see it driving away. Now swearing under her breath, Della ran to the next cab she found. She got in and told the cab driver to go to Kody's Kiddie Korner, rushing Olivia into the backseat. Once they passed the coffee shop, she told the cab driver to pull over. She had forgotten to grab a hot chocolate, like she always did with Olivia. She paid the driver before picking Olivia up and placing her on her back, and dashed into the shop. She went to order, but Olivia beat her to it. She ran up to the counter and told the cashier what she wanted. As Della ordered, and waited for the hot chocolates, she took a glance around the shop, her eyes stopping on Kody. Della looked back at Olivia and said, "Stay right here, okay? I'll be right back," before heading towards Kody.

"Well, howdy stranger," she said to Kody, a smile on her face. Well, at least I'm not alone anymore, Della thought, happy that she had somebody to help her, but guilty at the same time. Why is somebody else's misfortune bringing me joy?

Dakota came to yet another realization. She had paid for her coffee and offered money for the second customer, as if it was in her daily routine. What else was in her bag? Did she already know this...? These two lives, one person memory was beginning to be a nuiscance as she settled the bag on top of the table in front of her. Kody closed her eyes and gently pressed a hand against the black fake leather. House keys...work keys...wallet...camera...buisness cards..pen...red lipstick..compact mirror.. She thought. As if expecting an animal to jump out at her, Kody carefully lifted the flap to check the bag. She was right. Everything she had guessed, was in her bag. She let out a breath of air and shook her head carefully. I'm not going crazy...am I? No. She couldn't be.

At that moment, a voice flooded her mind. She glanced up from her bag to a young woman, with reddish hair and an upbeat voice. Her eyes widened. Della! It was Della! From Highwaters! Kody nearly spilled her drink in her hand standing up abruptly. She hugged her friend tightly around the neck.

"Oh! You're here too! I have been so lost this morning and I-" Then she spotted Olivia. "Wait...I- I have an appointment with you later. Whoa.." She stepped back from her friend. "You and I have been making arrangements for the past week...but I swear, yeterday, last night, I was Renee, and now I'm... Dakota, Kody Rinaldi. What is happening?" Kody plopped herself back into her chair.

"None of this makes any sense..."

Della ran up and returned the hug that Kody- Renee- had given her, and let out a breath of relief. She remembers, Della thought. She returned to reality after Kody spoke. "It doesn't make any sense. This... thing that's happened is beyond me. I suddenly have habits and abilities I didn't have last night. I have a life I didn't have before last night. Do you have any idea of what's happening?" Della shot out in one breath. She turned to Olivia, who had toddled over with the drinks sloshing precariously around in the holder despite her orders to stay there, and sat her down a few tables over. She walked the few steps back to Kody, and worriedly waited around for an answer. How am I to get out of here? I'm not going to be able to do it alone, Della thought, close to tears. She hurriedly wiped her eyes, and sniffled just a little bit.

Dakota watched as her friend, Della make her way to the little child, before she returned to where she stood. The young woman shook her head sadly, slowly to make sure her hat stayed upon her head. She took a deep breath and slowly released it to calm her nerves. "I've not one idea. All I can make sense of, is that I have lived two very, very different lives. I have a sister and I'm almost certain I shared a bed with someone last night." Kody explained, suddenly biting her lower lip uneasily. "What bothers me the most is that...whatever happened last night, that brought us here, was far from the normal."

Kody took a small drink from her coffee and her eyes caught the clock on the wall. She shook the container gently before tossing it into the garbage can beside the door. "Would you two mind coming with me to the shop? It is your appointment after all, and I fear that if I don't go there soon, my mind would get complicated and jumbled for what could be the billionth time today, well, this morning." She finally added.

Her lips turned into a small smile before she grabbed a napkin and her danish. She was awake now, thanks to the caffeine. What all that she needed now, was answers. But, it looked as if those would have to wait a bit longer.

Della shook her head in response to Kody's question, and, grabbing her hot chocolate, took a step out of the door with Olivia, waiting for Kody. Della knew what it was like to have no clue who you really are. Taking a sip of her hot chocolate, she choked, not expecting to be so hot. Olivia started jumping on and down in worry as Della started coughing. "No, no," Della said, waving her hand, "I'm fine, the hot chocolate was just hot. You should wait before drinking though, Olivia."

Sitting down at a table outside of the cafe, she gestured to Olivia to sit with her, and she pulled a smartphone out of her bag. No, my phone, Della thought, shaking her head. It's my phone. She turned it on, and typed 6143 into the password bar. To her relief, although she hadn't had any second thoughts about the password on her phone, the phone unlocked, opening to a background of her, Olivia, and Kody. And a lot of apps. A lot. She saw Flappy Bird, Facebook, Tumblr, and something called Angry Birds. Why are those birds angry? Della thought, before realizing that it was a game. She handed her phone to Olivia as though she had been doing it her entire life, and began to absentmindedly hum a tune that she was not familiar with.

Kody watched as Della handed her phone off to Olivia, almost on instinct. Random thoughts echoed throughout her mind, more so questions that just didn't seem...normal. Was it a possibility that they just dreamt their old life? Could it be that their minds connected? Well, the mind is a powerful thing. Mind... why was it that, that word struck out at her most? She couldn't shake the angsty feeling that lurched in her stomach as her eyes closed to steady her heart rate. Too much confusion in one day, surely, she'd sleep hard tonight. Kody smiled at Olivia and gently settled herself on her knees in front of the child.

"Are you ready for your shoot, Olivia? I think, we're going to do a swing today, how about that idea?" She wondered. She glanced back at Della and smiled. "Let's go and hurry on to the shop. I don't get paid if I don't shoot some amazing photographs."

Della smiled at the way Kody interacted with Olivia. When Kody turned to talk to her, she nodded in agreement and said, "Let's head out. It's... how much again? I honestly cannot remember. Should I?"

Now she was really confused. Turning to Olivia, she picked her up and said, "Okay, time to go, okay cutie?" She took back her phone and shoved it in her bag. Realizing that she probably wouldn't be able to find it, she opted for putting it into her front pocket instead. Standing up with the small girl hanging on to her, she turned back to her friend.

"Shall we?" Della asked, a goofy smile on her face, habit and instinct taking over as she laughed. She turned to walk out of the door before remembering they were already outside. Shaking her head at herself, she walked over to the street and hailed another cab. Maybe I should get a car, Della thought, wondering what on Earth she would do with a car.

"Well." Kody stopped. How much were the pictures anyhow? She should know this, if she had lived such a life for, what seemed to be awhile. She tapped her nose gently as she began her stroll down the sidewalk. "Ten for the portraits, ten for the 'Swing Spring' collection. Five for the printing... so twenty-five is what we agreed on." She nodded, that sounded about right. The young woman fixed her hat gently before continuing on. This street was quite entertaining, she'd have to admit that. The "PickMeUp Station" coffee shop, "Piece A Pizza", the pizza place, a newspaper stand and hot dog stand, and then the entrance to the substation, before they arrived to her small business. Kody smiled and gently reached into her bag, fumbling until her fingers wrapped around her keys.

As soon as she unlocked the door, sensors flipped on the lights. Right as one walked in, one would noticed the counter with a jar of lollipops, a sample album and random picture frames here and there. Behind the counter was a desk with a laptop. In the corner of the room was a backdrop, chair and a box of props. On the opposite side, there was a curtain, which covered the green leaves, vines and the white swing. Cameras were locked away in cases along the back wall for security and for display. The walls were painted with blues, greens and reds. It was a perfect setting for children, for against the window facing the photography makings, were chairs and random toys for children to play with to keep them occupied, as well as magazines for adults to read while they wait.

Kody smiled. Along the walls were black and white photos of bridges, streams, trains and random folk. Her photos. She had to admit, they were quite beautiful. "Come on in." She waved the two inside before propping the door open for them. "Olivia can play with the toys while I get set up." She directed.

Dakota made her way behind her desk and flipped on the laptop. Her eyes fixed on the screen and for a moment, she didn't know her password. Oh no..., she thought, biting her red coated lip a she fumbled with her mind. "Hmm..." She softly typed in Renee. two-four-one-three, and it clicked on immediately.

Della followed Kody, while checking her purse and finding an already-written-out check waiting in her bag, her feet having their own sense of direction as they walked to get Olivia's photos taken. She marveled at the shop as the lights turned on, despite having a feeling of dΓ©jΓ  vu. Olivia, laughing, ran to play with the toys. Della turned, check already in hand, and handed it to Kody, smiling at Olivia giggling over a teddy bear. She craned her neck over to the swing hanging from the ceiling and said, "Olivia's never going to want to leave if you set her on that swing, I hope you know that," with a smile, and continued, "Her school is asking for a yearbook photographer to come and take pictures of the kids in their classrooms, and I suggested you. Would you do it?"

While waiting for answer that would hopefully be a yes, Della tapped her fingers on the counter top, humming along with the beat. What song is this? Della asked herself, before remembering. It's Nothing To Do. You love The Well Pennies. She started singing along as she tapped, well aware of her horrible singing voice. "I go where the wind goes. Whatever I build inside my head. Lately, I've got a whole light... what are the lyrics? Da-rn it. I thought I knew the lyrics better than that," Della mumbled to herself.

"Oh, I know." Kody answered, taking the check carefully. She placed it into her small register behind the counter and printed out a receipt, handing it to Della. "Looks like I have...one appointment after yours, and they don't require a swing. So she can plant herself there for as long as she likes." Dakota answered with a smile before she moved to the back wall. She stopped before stuffing the key into the lock on her cameras. Yearbook? What? She bit her lip softly and turned towards Della.

"I'm not sure, Del. I want today to pass so I can figure out where we are, and what we're doing here." She explained, unlocking one of her cameras carefully. She sat it down on the floor and unlocked a cabinet, taking out a large camera and hooking it to the stand in front of the swing. She turned on a few lights and turned on the camera, looking through the screen to angle it correctly.

"What happened when we went to bed last night...I remember rain and that's that." She said as she turned her attention to her laptop and then back at Della. "I don't understand, why me? I'm just a stable girl."

"Livi, will you sit on the swing for me?"

Della looked sadly at Kody. "You're not just a stable girl. You're a great person, and are very talented, not to mention quite the looker," she finished with a slight chuckle. "You're my best friend, and a great equestrian, and photographer, as I can tell by this. You were destined for something great. I can tell. Plus, I get the whole 'I'm confused because who am I again' thing. You can decide later. To be honest, I have no idea where that came from."

Della turned to watch Olivia clamber onto the swing, and continued to watch as she started moving, shouting and giggling with glee. Della smiled at the sight. She turned back to Kody to awkwardly pat her on the shoulder. She never had been good with sentiment. She was better with the blunt truth, no matter how painful it was. And this was the truth. Kody was always the better person, helping others, giving back to the community, and helping hurt children. Della was glad that she was stuck in some smelly, crime ridden world with her.

Dakota sighed softly as she glanced through the camera. Maybe Della was right. Maybe there was a reaon they were chosen to be in this world. But what reason could there possibly be to set her into this sort of world? Kody knew that she couldn't dread over it. She knew it that much that she just let her mind freeze and clicked the camera a few times. She turned off one of the lights and turned on other one. She directed Olivia here and there, making her appearance stick out dramatically.

"Mm. I'm sure whom ever was in my bed thought so too, maybe he was so frightened of my appearance, he ran out this morning." She mumbled quietly, more to herself as she got down on her knees and took a picture of Olivia with the toothy grin and wide eyed perfection. Kody climbed to her feet and gently settled the camera back onto the stand.

She made her way to her laptop, settling down in her chair carefully before she opened up the freshly taken photos. Most of them were good with only a few blurred due to wrong lighting or Olivia sliding off the swing.

"Do you like these?" She wondered, pointing to the screen with a finger as she settled her hat down next to the laptop.
