background Pelin lived in middles most of her life. As the middle child in her family, she was left to look after her younger brother while left to live in the shadows of her older brother, a promising doctor-to-be. As the daughter of a traditional Turkish mother and a modern German father, she was expected to learn how to be the perfect docile housewife as well as an independent, excelling student. Pelin lived this way for the first fourteen years in her life, struggling to find where in the world she fit. Everything changed, however, when her older brother was found dead after driving drunk. Suddenly, Pelin was filling the role that her brother had left behind while trying to cope with the loss. Apart from this being emotionally difficult for Pelin, her dreams of becoming an architect came to a stop for she was expected to follow her brother's footsteps in the medical field. When she was sixteen, Pelin was sent to the United States to live in Florida with her aunt and continue her academic career. There, Pelin was given the freedom she previously never had. Two years later, she originally entered the medical field, but made the bold choice, originally against her parents' wishes, to switch majors after falling into a great state of unhappiness. She graduated six years later with masters in architecture and received a job as an architecture firm in Atlanta, where she has been working for around two years.
x xWhen the monsters came, Pelin's parents were terrified and insisted that she travel back to Turkey and go to her mother's small hometown, where the monsters hadn't reached yet. Pelin knew that it would be impossible and she would not likely survive even the flight. Instead, Pelin packed her bags. She knew that big cities were going to be the most dangerous, but Pelin had nowhere to go. Pelin's partner suggested that they go to his family in Indiana, who lived on a farm, so she agreed to meet her aunt there. The couple never reached their destination because he was turned one night. As her only way to survive, Pelin killed him and was left to travel alone in search of safety.

personalitycalculative ● deceiving ● determined
Pelin feels like she has been greatly shaped by the forces of tradition and modernity attempting to put her into a mold of what the ideal woman is. Her nature leans towards modernity, of course, and her experiences have made Pelin, in crude words, a dangerous woman. Above everything, Pelin sees the world as her or them-- a struggle for survival against equally flawed humans that only want to bind her down and make. She is not afraid to use someone or do what is necessary to get what she needs. Nor is she afraid to wait. Pelin is calculative (although this is much more difficult when the world has gone to flames) and does everything with the ulterior motive of ensuring her well-being. In a similar sense, she is determined and very attentive to detail, a perfectionist in a simpler sense, and it due to this characteristic, she believes that through her work, and her work alone, she has achieved everything in life-- including her right to study in the United States, her job, and even the fact that she remains alive while everyone around her perishes. Of course, people rarely notice the coldness that lies at the heart of her warm smile, attentive commentaries, and helpful demeanor. After all, Pelin has learned that in order to be the woman she wants to be, sometimes she has to be the woman they expect her to be.
x xAt the heart of the coldness in her heart, however, lies a little girl, silenced down by ideas of self-grandeur and Darwinistic ideas of survival, whose only desire is to find true happiness and inner peace. At the source of her determination to break away from the mold is the fear that she would've never been good enough to fill it. The idea that, if it hadn't been for the death of her brother, she would've had no other option in life than to become a housewife. So instead, she walks through this burning world with a heavy heart and a storm in her mind, telling herself that she is unafraid to walk through the flames.

Image

major secret Pelin doesn't know this yet, but she is pregnant.
quirks Pelin cannot do without chapstick or lipgloss; she will immediately feel like her lips are dry.
strengths Due to her personality, Pelin is willing to do anything in order to survive, meaning that she feels very little remorse in killing the turned. After all, it's her or them. Pelin is a person who hates complaining, meaning she will not fuss over things where she has to sleep or what she has to eat.
weaknesses In all her time living in big cities, Pelin never learned to drive, so when she was left alone to head up to Indiana, Pelin actually crashed her car and was left to travel by foot. Pelin hates children.

Something rolled under the car's wheels, jolting the car. Ree thought she whimpered faintly.

"Gracie? Gracie!" Sharp stones under her bare feet, slicing through her soles; the stones growing slippery with blood, but it didn't matter - as long as she found Gracie, as long as she was safe...

The steering wheel was warm under her hands, mainly due to the bright sun directly overhead, but also her desperate grip on it. Anywhere this car could take them... anywhere away from this horror, and she was willing to drive until the steering wheel burned her fingers down to the knuckle.

She didn't see Gracie until she almost tripped over her hand. Right there, a grey starfish lying belly-up, miles and miles away from the sea. No, a hand reaching, grasping for her ankle, begging... don't leave me. She had to press a hand to her mouth, a dying scream clawing its way up her throat that was little more than a low moan by the time it left her.

Would run until her feet were bloody stumps if necessary.

Gracie's torso was there, right by the path, but her legs were further than was humanly possible, almost buried in the thick of the bushes. She could remember with a sudden clarity the week before, when Gracie had shown her all the machinery in the barn, machinery she wasn't allowed to touch even at eighteen years old because her parents weren't certain she wouldn't lose a finger or two to the sharp jaws lying in wait. Or half her body.

Was that movement she saw among the wreckage, right next to the road ahead? At this time of day? As they passed, the car slowed to a crawl, her eyes straining to see if there was anyone that needed their help - or, god forbid, something they needed to outrun.

Suddenly terrified, she ran back to the house and started tossing things into a bag - clothes, the last of the canned food, her coat - and bolted back out to the car, certain Gracie (or what used to be Gracie) would pull herself upright and begin heading back to meet her friend one more time. Never mind that she was barefoot. Never mind that she would have to stop and figure out where to go later. She needed to get out of there, right now.

Just grass, blowing in the wind. Nothing to fear. Nothing to run from - yet.

Ree turned to look at her passenger, picked up only two days ago. She'd been out here driving for almost five days, with only a vague idea of how to get to Detroit, and a passenger only meant one more person to care for. But somehow she felt a lot better, having a living person sitting next to her. It made the journey almost bearable.

"You okay?"

It was easy to drift off when the landscape before you was desolate and unchanging. Lacking a good night’s sleep for some time now, Pelin had drifted off in the passenger’s seat for when the car’s sudden movement shook her out of the light rest. Dark eyes open, in slight alarm, and her hand reached out towards the gun she had placed in the cup compartment on her door.

The gun wouldn't do much to help unless the target was less than two or so meters away since her aim was untrained; the closest she had gotten to a weapon like the one she now so instinctively grabbed was a one-hour long self-defense session years ago. But things had changed in a matter of hours and she had to learn to adapt quickly. The gun and the knife in her boot provided protection, so they stayed close to her.

With the area cleared from possible danger, Pelin sighed and allowed her body to relax some, placing the cold object back down to its original resting place.

"I'm good, thanks," Pelin said, nodding her head.

Contrary to Ree, the idea of coming across a human in need did not cross her mind. Pelin saw everything -and everyone- that she didn't understand or know as a threat. With the world sent into chaos, it was only natural that this mentality only heightened. Another human in their company would mean someone else she would need to protect herself from. If there was someone that knew about personality facades, it was her, after all.

Now fully conscious and realizing her mistake of falling asleep, Pelin reached out towards the dash for the map she had folded up. With the communication servers and internet down for three days now, it was impossible to navigate with the help of GPS. This also meant that she hadn't spoken to her family on the other side of the world. Her eyes scanned the words and colors across the paper. A line had been drawn to help them navigate their journey.

"We should be coming across a small town in a couple of hours," she said. "We can get gas and find a closed-in place for the night, if you want."

She didn't exactly like the idea of wandering into a town, but she knew that they should lock themselves up for the night. Plus, she was tired of sleeping in the car. It always felt too open, too exposed.

The other girl leaned forward to grab the map off the dash, and it took all of Ree's willpower - not that she had very much, now that she was running on fear and the fumes of a candy bar - not to flinch away. As it was she already had trouble keeping the car steady on the road, her eyes flicking this way and that to mark any signs of danger. Trying to keep her voice casual, she asked, "How's the road looking?"

Pelin's answer was more no-nonsense. Already Ree was beginning to get a feel of the other's character, markedly more straightforward, less likely to devolve into nervous jokes and mindless chatter to try to feel normal again. She probably wasn't aware, but she kept Ree on track pretty well. Every time she tried to ease her mind's view of the situation, her roadtrip buddy would have a terse one-liner to snap her back to reality.

After so long with her foot on the pedal, she swore she could feel the plastic bite through the bottom of her track shoes, carbon fibre technology be damned. A town to stop at for the night was welcome news, far better than the farm she'd hid behind on her first night, terrified that she'd encounter what was left of its previous occupants.

"Cool. Good. Maybe we could find some food too, a store or two to raid, huh?" She tried to chuckle, cursing the shake in her voice. "Honestly, all I want is a hot shower."

Around them, the sky darkened gradually, the world spinning on as if nothing had happened. As if people hadn't gone completely batshit crazy, physically tearing themselves to bits just because. they could. Amazing, how the two of them seemed like the only ones in this entire world that hadn't decided to spontaneously murder themselves and drag everyone they could down with them.

They found the town just fine, Ree circling around the borders as quietly as she could. "Want to pick our digs for the night?"

pelin
dialogue - #B87F3A

Pelin had begun to hate silence. Not the kind between two people, the lack of conversation, but the silence one noticed when the sound of wheels rolling across pavement was almost deafening. She was used to background chatter, to fingers tapping against illuminated keyboards, to the drowsy voice of news reporters at three in the morning. It was an unsettling realization, one she was coming across far too often.

And the town was far too quiet. The air hung thick, wanting-- no, begging for something to pierce through. Pelin was almost wishing for it as well. The two had chosen a town as their first stopping point for a reason. Cities were far too dangerous, too many people, too many blocked roads. However, Pelin still expected to come across something in this town. And not knowing where her enemy hid was far worse than confronting it. Or at least she thought.

"Stop there," Pelin said, spotting a gas station across the street.

Feeling that there was nothing else needed to be said, Pelin reached over to retrieve a backpack from the back seat before opening the door.

"You can fill the tank while I see if there's anything we can use," Pelin suggested, hoping that Ree wouldn't insist on going inside as well. She wouldn't have the energy to argue, however, if the other woman decided to go in.

Pelin didn't necessarily want to go in alone, but it would be good to have someone out here on the lookout, ready to make a quick getaway if needed. Plus, if anything attacked while inside, it would be easier to look out just for herself; she hadn’t fully adjusted to the idea of group survival yet, to be quite honest. Throwing the empty backpack over her right shoulder, she grabbed the gun and tucked it into her belt, opting for the knife in her hand.

Without another word, she headed towards the glass door. Had it not been for the knowledge that the world had gone to pieces, the scene would've just appeared like a closed gas station in a place where everyone in town was sleeping. It was far too early to see much of a difference; the grasses of homes were still trimmed and windows were still clean.

Pulling on the door, Pelin cursed as she found it to be locked. This wasn't exactly something she expected; in apocalypse movies, doors always just seemed to be open. Not that she dared to call this an apocalypse. Pelin was ready to kill, but not ready to fully accept the situation.

With a sigh, she headed back to the car. She had seen some things on the shelf and knew that they shouldn't risk missing out on food or other essential supplies. Opening the trunk, she dug around, looking for something that could be used to break the glass. She wasn't sure how all of this would work; no normal person happened to be constantly breaking windows and glass, after all. But they needed to figure something out.

"The door is locked," Pelin told Ree. "I'm going to circle the place to see if there's entry through the back door, but if not--" she stopped when she found a metal bar, probably to be used during a flat tire emergency or something of that nature, she didn't know, "I'm going to try to break the glass."

"Stop there."

Ree complied, turning quickly into the pump that stood closest to the road. She didn't see anyone around - the station itself seemed silent and still - but if they needed to leave quickly, at least she would waste less time pulling onto the road.

While she sat there, both hands still on the wheel, trying to psych herself up enough to step out of the car - stop being such a wuss, Vihara - Pelin was already opening the door, leaving the car. "You can fill the tank while I see if there's anything we can use."

"Sure," Ree responded faintly, checking the tank. Not low, but not nearly enough either. As quietly as she could, she slipped out of the car, reaching for the pump. Standing behind the car while she waited for the tank to fill felt a little safer, though she did feel a tiny bit foolish. Better safe than sorry, at any rate.

A shadow rounded the pump, and Ree swallowed a scream. The light quickly revealed it to be Pelin, who ignored Ree in favour of the trunk. There wasn't much in there - Ree watched curiously as the older girl rummaged in the random assortment of items. "What are you looking for?"

"The door is locked. I'm going to circle the place to see if there's entry through the back door, but if not - I'm going to try to break the glass." She hefted the weight of a metal bar, to Ree's alarm. She had no memory of that, whatever is was. "Well, uh, be careful," she managed, drawing back like she was afraid Pelin was going to turn around and whack her over the head with it. Pelin offered no response, only heading back towards the station.

Before the trunk clicked shut, something caught Ree's eye. A spare can, tucked into the back. She'd almost forgotten Dad's reminder. "Silliest thing you can ever do is get caught out without gas. You can't anticipate popped tyres, but gas is always running out. I know you're a smart kid, though. Smartest kid in town."

She could still hear the pride in his voice. Brushing away the tears that threatened to spill over, she sent a short, desperate prayer heavenwards, hoping someone was listening. Dad was smart. They were all smart. They'd take care of themselves, and hopefully she'd find them at safety too.

Ree filled the spare can with gas, then tucked it back into the trunk. Hopefully they wouldn't have to break it out too soon, but... you never know.

The can was heavy, and as she lifted it her stomach grumbled, as if reminding her of the energy she'd already exhausted. Maybe Pelin had found something good. She turned in the direction of the station, eyes straining to see the other's progress.
