A backpack with a few days worth of pack food: crackers, jerkey, a few MREs and carrots. He also brought two canteens full of fresh water and a change of clothes, in case he can't make it in a day or two. And finally a tent, for the same reason.
Bio: Born and raised in the suburbs, Ryan never got out much. For the most part, he receeded into fictions that he could hide in. Between going to the movies at least once a week, watching TV and reading comics he would write down his own little stories and make up things he would hope would scare people. He never felt comfortable around other people, but he didn't really enjoy going outside either. When he was young, he was attacked by a swarm of mesquitos and developed a fear of bugs.
When he was around 11, his family moved to the edge of the Dark Forest. He became even more recessive and was often happier being ignored in school. The other students were happy to oblige, for the most part. In his writing class, though, he had to read aloud some of his stories, which caused a couple of students to start teasing him about ghosts, demons and curses. Eventually, they got under his skin and he challenged them, asserting he didn't believe in anything of the kind. So, they gave him a compass, told him to go straight into the Dark Forrest in one side and out the other. Certain there was nothing in there but bugs, he swallowed his fear and went in.
