Description

Full Name: Caire Silva

Nicknames/Aliases: N/A

Age: 9

Gender: Male

Species: Shape-shifter

Occupation: N/A

Description: Obviously, Caire's appearance can change drastically thanks to his shape-shifting powers. However, certain features tend to be common to all of his forms. Caire is thin-faced, with mostly reserved features, aside from a relatively heavyset jaw. His eyes are brown and deeply sunken. His hair, also brown and very coarse, is badly in need of a cut, and Caire usually forgets to tend to it in any way, shape or form.

Caire's alterations, while immensely varied, are rarely "nice"-looking, no matter what he does. This is something he's accepted, and he doesn't usually make an effort to make them (or himself) look more presentable. He often smells like blood.

Because of the nature of what he is, clothing is often optional for Caire, but when he chooses to wear it, he's usually seen in the simplest, lowest-maintenance clothing possible.

Personality: Caire is hot-blooded. He's quick to anger and happy to act on it, often no matter the current circumstance or what causes it. It's as natural for him as breathing. He's fearless, and he tackles challenges based on his emotional responses before he even begins to think about how to handle them more productively-- insofar as he thinks at all.

His lack of culture is immediately apparent. Having not grown up in a more civilized part of society, Caire learned to make himself heard by being loud, brash, and opinionated. Social niceties aren't completely beyond Caire, but he's mystified by the lifestyles and mannerisms of the wealthy and privileged.

Finally, Caire is cynical. The people of Valon are rarely as nice as they might seem-- especially since they might want him for a new steam boat. He tends to be mistrustful of people who aren't totally honest with him from the get-go (which includes most people). When shown that someone is not out to hurt him, however, Caire is fiercely loyal, and he gives absolutely everything he has to help those whom he considers his friends.

Skills: Besides his shape-shifting abilities, Caire is used to living on his own. He has an excellent survival instinct: he's able to quickly locate food, water, and shelter, regardless of where he is. He demonstrates an excellent sense of direction and solid tracking abilities.

In addition to Caire's shape-shifting abilities, he possesses an almost uncanny understanding of the anatomy of other creatures. He has the most experience with humanoids, but he can determine how organic creatures function and operate just by observing them in action. This passive ability gives him subconscious ideas that he in turn uses to develop himself.

Though Caire often misses surface-level details when evaluating situations, he is remarkably good at dealing with people. An emotional, naturally empathic individual, Caire can often gain insight into other people just by talking to and/or observing them (even if they aren't necessarily being honest with him). Because Caire understands humanoids very well, he can easily pick up unconscious cues in body language that make it easy to analyze others.

Caire has spent a good amount of time in the capital city and often doesn't stick to one place for long. He knows many of her districts, especially the poorer districts, well, and this intimate first-hand knowledge means that Caire (when equipped with a lockpicking kit and when using his powers) can access areas in which he shouldn't be allowed.

Caire learns new skills quickly. He has a good memory and, when he can bring himself to pay attention, can quickly understand how to perform basic tasks. Physical tasks are especially easy to learn, because Caire can gain understanding by observing the mechanical processes that bodies perform.

Finally, Caire is also very adaptable: while Caire doesn't often have a contingency plan, he can improvise, and he thinks on his feet.

Weaknesses: Shape-shifting is enormously difficult for Caire: it's physically draining and immensely painful for him, as well as being limited by the amount of spare mass that he has to work with. This means that Caire often can't transform spontaneously: aside from small alterations, Caire is largely stuck with the forms he chooses for extended periods of time.

Caire is unintelligent and knows it: he doesn't handle intellectual challenges well if they have steep learning curves. Unless eased into such scenarios, he can become easily discouraged. He has a particular weakness for approaches that require abstract reasoning, and is easily bogged down by overwhelming numbers of small details.

The concept of logic is almost completely foreign to Caire, who makes nearly all of his major decisions based on his emotional responses. His overly brash decisions often have no justification besides "it seemed like a good idea at the time", and he's completely at a loss when he's required to reason.

While Caire's natural skepticism means that he can save himself from obvious traps, Caire is still a kid, and he can be taken advantage of easily. Caire's greatest enemies are those who can effectively appeal to his emotional needs or his physical needs, especially the latter.

Brief History: Caire was born in a small fortress in the mountainous regions of Valon-- the centerpiece of a small commune of bandits. Though the commune had very little in the way of material wealth, and though supplies were hard to come by in the winter months, Caire was always happy.

It was eventually learned that Caire was not nearly as human as once thought-- though his parents were both perfectly human, his abilities betrayed him. He struck out on his own and found his way to the capital city of Valon, quickly making himself at home as best he could. Thanks to his age, it was hard to find legitimate work-- and even if a menial job came his way, it was next to impossible to disguise what he was.

No matter where Caire went, everyone wanted the precious Magefire. He moved around more frequently, learning how to survive as he went. The upper districts had the nicest things, but also more security. Caire could break into buildings, but he made many mistakes, and eventually he found himself staying to the poorer parts of town.
