Ariza grew up as the child of a military man and a wife who seemed to be constantly on the move. Where his father constantly moved due to his job, his mother had an unending wanderlust. Any job she had would become victim to her "two-year itch" wherein she'd look for something new to do every couple of years. It made for a workable, if not slightly strange couple and together they raised Ariza near the Japan military base. Hell, the only consistency in their family seemed to be his mother's connection to her culture. Though his parents were muggles, he turned out to have a flair for magic when he nearly burned the house down by shooting sparklers (not sparkles but lit sparklers) from his fingers.
Being that they were people of science, their immediate reaction was to freak out and figure out whether or not they were going crazy but all signs pointed to him being a Muggleborn. His father reported to his superior officer to request a transfer, but as it turned out, the officer had a magical child of his own: one who attended Mahoutokoro. Since he already had a conversational understanding of Japanese and there were no cheaper options in the United States, they decided to send him to the school during the day.
As it turned out, Ariza had quite the knack for spellcasting as well as some of the stranger magics that his mother told him tales of. She called it Santeria or "the way of the saints" and continued the oral traditions that her grandma as well as the rituals of old. True, not everything worked in his favor but he found it more and more interesting. Contrary to the subjects he'd been learning in school these ones (though obscure) felt like he was doing something cool.
Along with the Quidditch team, he pours his time into the Strange Magic club since he finds it the most interesting thing about the campus and he doesn't really care much for most of the people in the school. If one asked for "Ariza Jackson", most of the answers would be a muttering about how he's a punk-ish foreigner or acts out, but it's not really true. He just gets loud when people are disagreeable.He's quite like his owl Featherwind actually.
