Adelaide Ruperts

"Evolution really screwed up with those cranks..."

Description

Image
Image

→Name: Adelaide Ruperts
→Gender: Female
→Age: 17
→Job: Infirmary attendant
→Room: 9
→Appearance: Refer to picture.

→Personality: Generally cheerful and quite agreeable, Adelaide has a short temper that is generously accompanied with a willingness to forgive and forget (especially when placated by something chocolate). One of her many flaws is that she's an impatient girl and stubborn to a fault, but that's easily balanced out by her quick laughter.

→History: Mr Ruperts was one of the first to succumb to the infection, back when no one really knew about the cranks. It was traumatizing to say the least. Adelaide watched as her father--a literary professor at the local university, soft spoken and the most gentle man she'd ever known--butchered the neighbor's dog with a butter-knife before continuing on a slaughter spree that included all of Arbutus Drive, their residential neighborhood. Adelaide only managed to escape by virtue of the fact that someone had abandoned their bike on the lawn, giving her a chance to get away before anyone noticed she was still alive.

→Possessions: An old watch on her wrist with a cracked glass that she absolutely refuses to fix. It's the only token she has of her father, before he was infected with a bunch of crazy.

→Miscellaneous: Adelaide has certified training in CPR and first aid; she took some courses in high school for extra credit, and has found them to be very useful in the wake of this new virus.

So begins...

A high school level first aid course could only take you so far, but Adelaide was one of the very few people in the mall with any medical experience whatsoever so the usual limitations on her training didn't apply. For instance, Adelaide was proficient in CPR but had never practiced phlebotomy in her life, but now she was an expert due to the force of necessity. Medical professionals might have cringed at her amateurish skills, but compared to the other residents of Redbrooke mall, Adelaide was practically a fully qualified nurse. As such, her shifts in the Infirmary were long and exhausting but they were also time consuming and distracting, which was exactly what the girl needed in these times.

Glancing down at her cracked wristwatch, Adelaide exhaled loudly. She still had thirty five minutes to go before her shift ended, but there wasn't much left to do, thankfully. They had very limited medical supplies in the mall, and even less in terms of equipment, so it was ideal if they didn't have to deal with anyone at all... but all it took was one single cough and everyone would succumb to a potentially devastating cold due to the close proximity of the mall, so they had to be paranoid with every patient. No sniffle went unnoticed, and no sneeze escaped scrutiny; if there was one thing the mall didn't lack, it was alcohol, so they used it freely to rub down every surface to sterilize it against possible bacteria. The liquor store, therefore, was strictly off limits... but sometimes Adelaide wished she could have free access to it and drown her sorrows in a hundred bottles of beer. As it were, she kind of didn't have the option so she had to make the best of things.

"Ade? One of the children was reported to have been coughing last night. Could you check it out, please? It's little Hannah Morgan." Adelaide grinned, taking the offered stethoscope and first aid kit eagerly. She loved kids, and this was the best way to kill the rest of her shift. "Sure!" She yanked off her gloves, slipped out of the pale pink scrubs she was wearing--three sizes too big, but still necessary--and headed for the daycare center. It would be nice to see Desmea again, she figured, since their conflicting schedules hardly gave them time to talk much anymore.

Upon arriving at the caring area, Adelaide paused and blinked at the lack of children. "Where'd they go?" She wondered, poking her head through the doorway and frowning. Oh yeah--they were kids, of course they'd be in bed already. The poor things! She spotted Hazel sitting on the floor, surrounded by toys. "Reclaiming your lost childhood, Hazel?" She called out in greeting, stepping over abandoned knickknacks on her way over.

Snow

Snow didn't realize that he was zoning out until he felt the light touch on his sweaty shoulder. His heartbeat quickened a bit, seeing as he was still briefly trapped in his own mind. He didn't necessarily jump, but he did visibly shudder. He remembered how that Crank pinned him down by his shoulders, scratching at his face with its filth encrusted fingernails. He could see it, playing over and over in his mind's eye. It still rendered him speechless.

"Hey S. You alright?"

Those words sent him back to the present. His eyes darted to the dark haired leader of security with a bit of surprise. How long has she been there? He ran a hand through his wet hair before sighing. He needed to get a grip. The more he tried to remember who he was, the more he felt as though he were slipping into insanity. Snow wiped more sweat off his left breast where his 'name' resided.

"I could be better," he replied with a distant look on his face. "It's time for my shift? If so, just give me a minute to clean up."

Hazel

A small grin spread onto Hazel's face at the sight Adelaide. She held the stuffed animal closer to her chest before speaking.

"Something like that..." She patted the spot next to her, signaling Ade to sit beside her. "So, you come here often?" She joked lightly. Hazel liked Adelaide, finding her rather endearing and fun to be around. It was a relief to have someone the lean on in the midst of all this madness; someone to be able to joke with despite the Cranks residing outside of these walls. Hazel continued to smile because if she didn't then who else will?

Adelaide toed aside a pile of Legos and sat down next to Hazel. There weren't that many kids in the Mall since they were too young to run away from the Cranks by themselves, but a lot of teenagers had brought their siblings when they'd escaped their afflicted families so the population of brats was steadily growing. Soon they would have a fully functional community on their hands, with no way to feed them. The thought was frightening so Adelaide pushed it aside, knowing that it probably haunted Hazel everyday since she was in charge of food. No one had a better idea than her friend about how limited their survival possibilities were... as soon as they all grew up and became adults, what were the chances that they wouldn't turn into cranks themselves?

Okay. She had to stop thinking about this. Come on, focus on the present, Ade...

"Someone heard Hanna coughing last night, so I came here to check her out and give her some lemon drops. Hopefully it's nothing, but you never know." She half-shrugged, crossing her legs comfortable and folding the stethoscope neatly in her lap. "How's it going with you?" Adelaide knew just how boring and redundant and stressful life was in this confinement, with entertainment far and few in between. "I feel like going to the old Blockbuster store downstairs and grabbing a DVD to watch. Something romantic, like Titanic. What do you say? Ready to cry a bucket of tears with me?" She grinned, nudging Hazel's shoulder.

Hazel

"Poor baby, I'll pray for her," Hazel sighed, feeling that pang in her heart that she couldn't ignore whenever the children were in any type of trouble, no matter how small. She wiped the sadness from her face in an instant, not wanting to ruin the bonding moment with Ade. "I just finished taking inventory on the food, and I think that we have some popcorn left. I can pop it up while you get the movie and I'll meet you there." She stood up and offered Ade her hand. "I think a dose of Leonardo DiCaprio can lift anyone's spirits." She stopped talking when a strange thought crossed her mind.

What if Leonardo DiCaprio was infected? What if he was no longer like Jack from Titanicor Frank from Catch Me If You Can? What if at this moment Leo was ripping someone's jaw open? It sickened her to her core.

Snow

Snow pulled himself up, causing a low hiss of pain to release itself through clenched teeth. He almost lost his balance, but he was glad that Ashley was there because he shoulder was his support. "Did you just run four miles?" He gave her a empty look then shook his head slowly. "Didn't think so."

Snow took a step forward gingerly, but not gingerly enough. He grunted as white hot pain shot up his right leg. "I'm fine," Snow said more to himself. He limped towards the door without complaining. He was a man that suffered in silence and although each step felt like his leg was going to fall off, he took it like a man and said nothing, only grunting and wincing on occasion.

This was nothing. Snow's had worse injuries...well, at least he thought he did. There was a large scar on his abs that he didn't remember getting, but it looked like it was a deep cut. There were bruises on his arms from his unknown past. He assumed that he was some sort of badass, judging by his various battle scars. Nevertheless, Snow was a trooper and an aching leg wasn't going to slow him down. He refused to let it hold him back. He limped his way to his and Ashley's room, so he could get some clean and non-sweaty clothes. After grabbing a pair of basket ball shorts and a plain white V-neck, Snow limped to the bathroom to ready himself for the night shift.

Adelaide blinked in surprise. Popcorn? "We do?" She tried not to get too excited but a bit of thrill still leaked into her tone. "With butter and everything? Good God, girl, I think I love you!" She took the proffered hand and stood up with a grin. "It's a deal. Let me just put this stuff away and I'll meet you there with the tissues."

So thrilled was Ade with the sudden turn of events that she completely missed the flash of sorrow on Hazel's face. She was mentally listing all the things she would have to do to end her shift early--and that included bribing Jenny, the other girl on the same shift as her, to cover the remaining twenty minutes. She'd also have to leave a note for someone to check up on little Hannah Morgan when she woke up in the morning because she herself hadn't gotten around to it tonight, and then... "See you in a few!"

"C'mon, Elaine. It's just twenty minutes! I'll even do your dishes tomorrow, just let me go early. Leonardo Dicaprio is waiting for me!"

The shift leader, Elaine, sighed wearily. "Stop with the dramatics, Ade. I don't want you anywhere near my dishes--God knows you'll break them all, given half a chance--so just go and try not to drool over Jack too much, okay?"

Ade grinned, lunging forward to give the shift leader a squeeze before taking off. She posted a quick note for someone to check up on Hannah Morgan tomorrow morning, washed up and tossed her scrubs into the hamper before leaving the Infirmary area to make a quick stop at her room. As usual, her roommate was nowhere to be seen, but the bed was neatly made up and items carefully stored away in appropriate places--a complete contrast to Ade's side of the room, which was littered with clothing and crumpled sheets.

She made a beeline for her unmade bed and picked up two large, fluffy pillows (she contemplated 'borrowing' her roommate's pillows too, but then decided against it) for comfort purposes, because watching the Titanic required cuddling, and since she was seriously lacking a boyfriend right now, a pillow would have to do. Ade glanced down at her father's cracked wristwatch and winced; Hazel was probably wondering where she'd gotten to. She grabbed a box of Kleenex from her nightstand and slammed the door behind her, jogging down to the small theater room.

"I won't take no prisoners, won't spare no lives,
Nobody's putting up a fight..."

The sound of a lone guitar strumming to the tune of 'Hells Bells' echoed down the empty hallway. Christopher sang the accompanying lyrics in a low voice, plucking at the strings of his acoustic skillfully as he did so. His fingers roamed over the body of the guitar with confidence, yet also a startling gentleness that he rarely expressed in his behavior anymore.

"I got my bell, I'm gonna take you to hell,
I'm gonna get ya, Satan get ya..."

A bucket of soapy water rested a few feet away with a damp mop leaning behind the bench where Christopher was sitting. This was a part of the mall that no one really visited because the contents of these stores weren't very useful, but Chris was keenly interested in the small instrument shop located beside the postal office so he returned whenever he had time. It was the only place he felt comfortable enough to play his guitar in solitude, which was why he'd taken a little 'break' in the middle of his shift to play a bit. It wasn't often that he could find such a perfect opportunity; either he was always working, or there was someone patrolling the area so he couldn't play without someone getting curious about it. Now, though...

"Hells bells, Hells bells, you got me ringing...
Hells bells, my temperature's high, Hells bells..."

Hazel

Hazel shook her head fondly, allowing Ade to steal a kernel or two without protest. Sharing was caring, after all. She turned her head back to Elsy. "That sounds interesting. I would share some info about myself, but the Titanic calls." She ushered Elsy to the media area. She took a seat beside Ade, offering her pillow to share. Before popping some popcorn into her mouth, Hazel glanced at Elsy then patted the spot beside her. "Okay, I am mentally prepared to fall in love with Jack. Let's do this! Ade, turn on the movie."

She chewed her popcorn and sipped her soda, with her gray eyes glued to the blank screen. She turned back to the rest of the people that were present in the room. How could she have been so rude? She could practically feel her mother scolding her from Heaven. She waved them over. "Hey, guys," she beamed like the sun. "If you want to watch the movie with us then feel free."

Snow

Snow turned in his sleep, groaning and mumbling.

"Run! Sam!" he screamed as he fought off a Crank. He thrust kicked the beast away before turning to the person beside him. "What the hell are you doing here? I said go! I'll hold them off, just get out of here." There stood, a blond hair boy with wide brown eyes and a freckled face. He was shivering with fear on the pavement of the dark parking lot.

"I'm not leaving you!" The boy cried.

"This is not a democracy, Sam. GO!" Snow slammed his shovel against the Cranks head, causing the senseless monster to fall to its death. Another ran towards him, but he held his ground, planting his feet and readying himself to swing.

He heard the cry before he was able to turn his head. "SAM!"

Snow didn't realize that he was really screaming the name until he was on the brink of tears. He shivered in his bed, clutching his sheets as if they were going to save him somehow. His bright eyes were wide and his skin was clammy, but he didn't care. The only thing on his mind was the little blond boy that haunted his dream. "Sam..." he breathed.

Elsy stood waiting patiently for everybody to arrive to the Social Room and get the movie started. Elsy watched as a girl ran into the room saying apologies and mentioning pillows? Elsy curiously watched the girl walk into the room. Elsy suddenly was ambushed with a pillow and she was taken aback that she almost fell over but she steadied herself quickly and she clutched the pillow gratefully, smiling at the girl who had just entered.

She'd seen her around before earlier on in the week but she'd never learned her name... Or wait... She thought hard. Wasn't it Adelaide? Elsy remembered Hazel mentioning her name. Elsy walked with Hazel to the media room and sat down on the ground and she wrapped her arms around the fluffy pillow as she waited for the movie to start. Hazel chatted with Ade and motioned for Elsy to come sit with her so Elsy got up and sat with them. Elsy smiled as they waited for the movie to start.

"... I hate myself," Adelaide said glumly, stuffing a fistful of popcorn into her mouth and chewing morosely. "Why else would I suggest watching Titanic if I didn't hate myself?"

The movie wasn't even finished, yet Adelaide was already in the middle of her waterworks. A small cluster of discarded tissues lay at her feet as a testament to her emotional state right now. "I can't believe Leonardo DiCaprio never won an Oscar," she said mournfully. "Look at him! Look!" She pointed at the screen accusingly, where Jack wooed Rose with his kindness. "Oh my God. He's so perfect. I need a Jack of my own, honestly."

The idea that her commentary would disturb Elsy and Hazel hadn't occurred to her yet. It was a quirk: she tended to comment on everything during a movie, voicing her opinions quite vocally to the annoyance of others. She just couldn't help herself. Many people found it irritating, which was why she usually torrented movies on her laptop and watched them by herself so as not to disturb anyone else... and chances were that the two girls sharing the couch with her right now had learned their lesson, and would never make the same mistake twice.

"Nut uh. You make the pretty music, so I came. I mean to come here."

"Haven't you heard about how curiosity killed the cat?"Chris asked impassively, dipping his mop into the soapy water. Did kids like this even exist anymore? It just figured that he'd be stuck under the same roof as the last of the Brady bunch, wouldn't it? He exhaled and brought the mop up again, slapping it onto the floor and pushing it downwards. Wet streaks trailed behind him as he moved steadily towards the right, further and further away from the girl. Kids scared him--they were too fragile, and he never knew what to say or do around them so he just tried to... scare them off, usually.

"I'm Mikayla. What's your name?"

He suppressed a wince. Damn, this one was insistent. "Dean," he lied, moving his mop under the bench to wipe the floor underneath it.

Hazel

Hazel blew her nose as woeful tears racked her body with trembles. She grabbed more tissues, wiping her puffy eyes and sniffling. Her heart went out to the characters that were soon going to face immanent death. It was sad, knowing their fates before they, themselves did. She knew that Jack-the man with the beautiful heart-was going to meet his end and that is what made her cry the most, knowing that the love between him and Rose would never prevail. They will never be married, never have children together, and never be able to say 'I love you' to one another. That was what made Hazel's heart ache and her tears flow freely. She could relate to Jack, she knew that she would never be able to have children, a family, and she didn't even know if she'd die tomorrow.

She nodded at Ade's comments in agreement. "He is perfect!" She wept, holding onto her pillow and stuffing handful after handful of popcorn into her mouth. "Why does the good die young?" She asked, wiping her eyes.

Elsy smiled as her friends started to cry. Elsy understood it was sad but the tears just weren't coming... Was something wrong with Elsy? No. She'd just experienced things way worse than this... She didn't need to waste her tears on a movie... She had real life problems... Like her father... And her mother... And the cranks... Without knowing Elsy started to cry... But it was okay because Ade and Hazel would assume its from the movie.. But Elsy was crying because she missed her mom... Elsy hoped they wouldn't mind and grabbed a bunch of tissues from their stock pile. She wiped her eyes but the tears wouldn't stop. She began to hiccup and no one cried this much during this movie... "Its just so sad!" she cried hoping they would believe she was crying because of the movie. Elsy didn't want to cry anymore though so she tried to force herself not to cry but it was hard. She wiped her eyes again. Her vision was blurry from the tears and she could barely see. Soon her breathing began to slow and she became slightly calmer. She hiccuped every now and then but it was better. "I wish I had a guy like that..." she gave her friends a smile. "This is fun... We should do this more often." she said.

Hazel dabbed her eyes before looking up at Quinn. She shook her head, gesturing to the movie that was making her heart ache. "I'm fine," she said hoarsely. "It's just the movie making me emotional." She gave the pregnant woman a gentle smile. There was one thing that Hazel envied more than anything, and that was Quinn's baby. She sighed sadly, never would she be able to carry a baby or dress it up.

Her envy was short-lived when she heard the sound of Ade talking and Elsy leaving. She shook her head, swatting Ade's arm. "I probably was," she said, giving her friend a scolding look. "That is a sensitive subject, Ade."
