lucian has the ability to manipulate psychic energy. he can use it to move objects with his mind and manifest the energy as physical blasts to incapacitate and kill. he can form a shield around himself in order to protect himself from physical attacks. he used to be able to read minds using it, but lost the ability in his late teens. he still occasionally has flashes of being able to read other people's thoughts, but can't control it. his ability is largely linked with his emotions. if he loses control of his emotions, he loses control of his ability. for years, he's had an iron tight grip on his ability and his emotions. his abilities massively drain him and after a job, he often has to sleep for sixteen, eighteen hours straight in order to recover. his whole body aches, and he gets serious migraines. he's incredibly powerful but pays for every ounce of energy.

lucian is the last person you'd expect to be a villain. he's expressive and incredibly friendly with customers and his co-workers. he's melodramatic and expressive, physically affectionate with his friends and anyone he knows. he's the go to friend for any form of advice, and he’s the type of friend to give it without being asked, especially when it comes to fashion. he’s the type to sit back and sip his iced coffee and laugh instead of getting involved in a dispute.

but beneath the surface, luc is struggling deeply. he was bounced from foster home to foster home with a care worker who didn’t give a damn when luc disappeared at the age of fifteen. he lost a part of his ability following the traumatic experience and it’s felt like a part of him has been missing ever since. he’s got a lot of unresolved anger, anger that he can only vent through illegal activities, anything that gives him an adrenaline rush. he just wants to feel alive. there’s a part of him that wants to get caught, that wants to come face to face with the people that let him down and to hold them accountable. he wants them to see what they made.

luc is incredibly ambitious and always has been. he didn’t go to university but isn’t letting that stop him. he works for a fashion magazine as a model, a photographer and occasionally writes articles. on an official level, he’s a freelancer, giving him the freedom to work around his more... nefarious work. he’s driven and a little cold, not caring about what he does or who he hurts. there’s something about chaos that keeps him alive in so many ways. he would love a normal life but there’s a part of him that feels he’s far too gone to ever go back, to ever get better. he knows he’s broken and fully embraces it. he’s been that way so long that he doesn’t know how to be put together again.

lucian never knew his parents. he was abandoned at birth and entered the foster system straight away. he bounced around from foster home to foster home, never staying anywhere that long. the care worker he had for his first few years of life was wonderful. she really tried to find luc somewhere nice, somewhere he would always fit in. and then she went on maternity leave and never returned to her job. luc’s new careworker didn’t give a damn. luc stayed bouncing around from foster home to foster home, being put in places that really weren’t suitable. he never found anywhere he fit, never stayed anywhere long. his abilities only complicated things, made it harder to find somewhere that accepted him.

he was fifteen and was in his worst foster home yet. he had already run away from home and was on the streets. nobody had looked for him. he’d seen a few heroes, had been inspired by them and all the good they did. one hero in particular, a hero with the ability of telekinesis. he saw luc at the back of a crowd and spoke to him, offered him help and told him that if he was ever in trouble, he would help. only a few hours later, luc was kidnapped. he did everything he could to alert the outside world, to alert the hero. but there was nothing. no help. luc had to use his own ability to escape. the stress of having to use so much of his ability without being able to rest his body overwhelmed his brain and his powers started to fail. he was found by a villain who brought him to the hospital, having taken pity on him. his care worker had finally reported him missing, but nobody had looked for him. not even the hero who had promised him that he would always help.

the heroes continued to fail him. he asked for their help again and again with trying to figure out what was wrong with his abilities. they refused to listen, refused to help. in reality they didn’t know how. he ran away from his foster home again and ended up on the streets again. with nothing else to do, no other way to survive, he started stealing, using his abilities again. the villains found out about him and took him under their wing. he quickly gained infamy and found himself a job doing something he somewhat enjoyed. he hasn’t looked back since.

So begins...

Markus could easily tell what he said had an immense affect on Lucian. With his face paling, his body language drastically changing, and from how his voice sounded, he could tell Lucian was scared by what he told him. How the reality of the situation on him had such a powerful impact, Markus knew that Lucian wasn't entirely bad. At least not deep down or when it came to kids, something that was slightly endearing about him. But that wasn't the time for him to think on that. Markus listened and nodded as Lucian spoke, listening to everything he had to say and his stance and opinion on what Lucian thought, albeit with how sparatic his comments were in the moment. He watched as Lucian gathered his things and said he'd be back later, and that he needed to get a few things.

He stood up and looked at Lucian with clear worry on his face, "Be safe, Lucian. I'll do what more investigating I can later. While you're gone I'll get some food and supplies, seeing as we'll be camping out here more often than not. I'll see you soon, Lucian." he said as he finally watched Lucian walk off after some more words were exchanged. Quickly Markus gathered the papers and folders, as well as the hard drive, and whiped what was on his computer, making sure there were no ways of tracking his location. He hid them in a secret safe in his apartment, hiding his computer in another spot as well, wasn't going to be careless and have it in the same spot.

Markus grabbed a hat and sunglasses as well and left to the nearest supermarket for some funk food and simple pain medication, and some drinks. He'd order food for later when Lucian got back so it'd be as good as it could be. He made a few more painful trips to some more stores, but he was all too quickly done and back at his apartment. He put all of the snacks and drinks and pain medication on the counter, and sat back down on the couch, giving himself a moment to rest before Lucian got back to the apartment and they could work on their plans a bit more. He thought for a moment, and pulled out his pc again, and did some digging. He was curious was Lucian had taken it so personally, and after a bit of digging he figured out why.

According to some articles and papers, when Lucian was younger he was forced from place to place, never finding a good home or permanent place to stay. At least that was until he became a well-known villain over the years who donned himself as Maelstrom. Markus sat back and everything made sense. Lucian didn't have a good upbringing, and neither did he. He was left alone to fend for himself in a fucked-up world such as their's, and it made sense. No wonder why he would be so hate-filled and angry. It would only be natural. And part of Markus couldn't help but feel sorry for him, as part of him felt like he could understand and connect with some of Lucian's struggles.

But that wasn't for the time for this, and he knew that. He'd need to make sure that they could find the people responsible for this, and get the kids out of there before anything happened to them.

The light from outside hit his eyes and Lucian squinted, wincing a little at the sudden worsening of his migraine. He'd initially planned on walking, but suddenly felt like his legs mightn't have held him up the whole way. So instead he flagged down a passing taxi and kept his head down. He knew that his reaction had to have given him away to Markus, revealed that he wasn't as cold, as difficult to upset, as he'd wanted to seem. Every cell in his body screamed at him for giving that away, for revealing the only chink in his armour. It was a weakness, one Markus could exploit if he wanted. But Lucian felt like Markus wouldn't do that. He seemed like a genuinely good guy. And Lucian wasn't sure how he felt about that. Despite how inebriated he'd been the previous night, the events after leaving his apartment were crystal clear, and thinking about them made the nausea worsen. Seeing Markus in that state-

The taxi driver suddenly pulled to a halt and announced that they were at their destination. Lucian handed over the money and slipped back into his apartment. He couldn't think about that right now. He went straight to the bathroom, downing two more painkillers and one of the anxiety pills he'd... acquired for days like this, when things were bad. He quickly showered and changed into something that felt a little more Lucian Mitchell. But even still, as the pills started to kick in and take the edge off the worst of the pain, Lucian couldn't quite pull himself together.

He had killed his kidnapper. The police had found where Lucian had been kept, and there, they found his body from where Lucian had panicked and repeatedly attacked the man. That had been case closed. It had been as close to closure as Lucian was ever going to get. And now the stitches had been ripped open all over again, and it had been worse than Lucian had even imagined.

He sank his head into his hands. He needed to face this. He needed to be there, and he needed to be present to make sure that this didn't happen to anyone else. He felt that familiar spark burn in his chest, and let himself exhale slowly, feeling it bloom until it cleared his head. He knew what he needed to do.

He got to his feet and grabbed a bag, throwing his laptop into it and digging out what little paper files he kept around the place. Pulling on some sunglasses, he mentally braced himself and waltzed out of the apartment. Even as terrible as he felt, despite the pounding in his head, he made himself walk to Markus' apartment. A few people recognised him, but he embraced that, posing for pictures. The media pressure was off for now. It was always the worst right before a big event as the world began to pay attention, but Lucian was a relatively small fish in a huge pond. There was always someone else just as interesting. It was how he'd avoided anyone finding out before that.

He swanned back into Markus's apartment building, knocking boldly on the door and waltzing right back in. It was as much an act to make him feel better as it was an act for when he was in public. "Right, Markus, darling, are you ready to get to work?" He asked as he made his way back over to the couch. "There's a case I think you need to read, it's the case file from twelve years ago. Read it all before you say anything or come to any decisions." Facing this head on was terrifying. But maybe getting Markus on board to help him face it would make things a little less terrifying. Lucian's surname was different at the time, back before he'd taken Mitchell after the last good foster family he'd had, but there was details in the file that made it pretty damn clear who it was. He opened up the casefile from his kidnapping and passed the laptop to Markus.

Markus had been back at his place for roughly ten to fifteen minutes when he heard the knock on the door, it didn't take him much to know who it was. With how the knock sounded and that he heard it before, he easily let Lucian back in without even really having to look to see who it was. He sat back down on the couch as Lucian stepped in, sitting next to him, leaving about a foot or two of the distance between them he nodded when Lucian asked if he was ready to do more reading and that there was one more case for him to read.

His eyebrow first quirked when he looked at the article, it was about a kidnapping that happened twelve years ago. What he read made him feel sicker than what he read in those notes. Maybe not worse, but damn well close to it. He was able to put two and two together, the article was about Lucian. The same Lucian was sitting right next to him. He took a deep breath and began to get completely focused into the article, taking in every little bit of information, not leaving anything out, not even the smallest detail. Once he was finally done, he slowly lifted his head up and looked away from the laptop and slowly stood up. All the while his expression never changed, nor did he even make a sound. His mind was working overtime with this. He was piecing together every little detail in all that he read.

From the information and documents on the hard drive, and papers, to what he just read from the article that Lucian had him read. There were too many details that were identical, it seemed almost too identical. But there were no such things as coincidences in Scarriden. It had to be the same people. Their main objective was the same, what they did and were going to do to the kids were hauntingly similar. He couldn't help it when he felt his stomach almost quite literally drop when he realized what they may have been dealing with, and what might be on their hands. They really were over their heads in this, and that's what scared him the most.

Finally, he turned back to look at Lucian, a solemn and almost heartbroken look overtook his face as he spoke, "I...I think it might be, Lucian..." he started, his voice seeming more solemn and down than usual. " There are too many things that happened in that case, and what's possibly going to happen to these kids if we aren't careful. What I'm trying to say is, I think it's the same thing that happened to you all over again, Lucian. I can't say I know it for a fact, but it's too likely not to be. Or there could just be a lot of sick fucks out there, but I really do think it's the same people from before...And I'm sorry, Lucian...You shouldn't have to go back to that mindset or place, but, what I'm asking is that you still help. I know it'll be hard to go back to that kind of place and time in your life. But, The only one that can really help them is you, Lucian. Otherwise, I won't be able to do this on my own..." Markus said with a saddened tone in his voice as he spoke. It honestly made him feel guilty and bad about having to bring Lucian into this situation again, but with him having survived, as well as him being the only other one that knew about this, as well as the only one that Markus could really trust, he had no other choice but to ask for Lucian's help. Whatever Lucian needed with this, Markus would oblige and do the best he could. He understood how hard this would be for Lucian, as he too had his own demons to overcome, but that wasn't what this was about. It was about kids, innocent kids that could be turned into war machines and weapons, or experiments, and he wasn't going to let that happen, not if Lucian could help him anyway.

As Markus read the file, Lucian found himself completely unable to just sit and wait. He found himself pacing around the apartment, once again glad that he couldn’t bite his nails. Otherwise, they would have been bitten almost raw. Instead, he found himself playing with his hair, checking for non-existent split ends, doing anything that might temporarily distract him. He took one look at Markus’ face as the hero got to his feet and knew that he’d come to the same conclusion that Lucian had. This was happening again. It hadn’t ended with Lucian.

For a moment, he felt himself slipping back into blind panic. He couldn’t do it again, couldn’t face it. But he forced himself to take a breath and focus on Markus for a moment or two as the hero spoke. He let the hero finish before he spoke, slowly walking over to look out the window. He sighed.

“Can I tell you something, Markus? Something I’ve never told anyone before?” He asked, but it wasn’t a question to be answered. “I’m fucking terrified. Last time, I nearly broke myself trying to escape. I don’t want to go back there. But...” he turned to look at the hero. “Last time, I didn’t have a single living soul on my side. Nobody came looking because there was nobody there to look. I had to save myself because nobody else would. And... don’t get me wrong, you’re a pain in the ass sometimes. You’re a little self righteous and frankly, you could do with taking a chill pill sometimes. But I know you have my back. And... I trust you. This time... this time it will be different. It has to be different. But I know you have my back. And there’s gonna be somebody looking out for those kids. I don’t care if I have to cram every single one of them into my apartment, I refuse to let this happen again. I’ll kill every single bastard involved if I have to.” Focusing on his anger made him feel in control again. “I’m stronger now. Okay, admittedly, so they’re pretty damn strong as well. But we can train. Build up our stamina. We have an upper hand because we know their plans. Just... stick with me. Because I am so... so goddamn terrified that I will break again, and that I will never get any of it back. But even if I have to claw out their eyes with my goddamn hands, I refuse to let them win.”

His voice cracked at one stage, but his tone was otherwise steady and low, running on pure anger.

Markus listened as Lucian finally spoke, knowing full well that Lucian wasn't going to wait for him to answer him, but now hearing how his emotions slightly got the best of him, ones of anger, fear, and sadness were clear. He nodded as Lucian said that he was scared, he could understand that, and to be honest he was scared shitless about this whole thing. The fact that it never ended after Lucian left, it caused chills to run through his veins.

He understood that Lucian was now putting his full trust in Markus, understanding that he never had anyone else to rely on or trust, no one to turn to, no one to help him. He was just alone. By himself, seeing as the world was against him, and that no one cared. Markus nodded, feeling more of himself understanding and relating to Lucian. He too once felt alone and scared, and to be honest, it's how he too felt.

He remained silent all the while, but he let his emotions show on his face, letting Lucian know that he was truly listening, and taking in everything he said. He couldn't help but give a small chuckle when he commented on him being a pain in Lucian's ass, as well as being "self rightous" and a bit of a prick. He crossed his arms and leaned against the window of his apartment. "You have me now, Lucian. I'm not going anywhere, and I don't plan on letting these kids end up in the same place you did. You never deserved it, no one does.." he said with clear sadness in his voice.

Markus gently placed his hand on Lucian's shoulder as he spoke, "I understand how you feel in all of this, Lucian. I can never understand or relate in what happened to you...But I know what it's like to be scared, and alone, and feeling like no one was there for you. After my parents were murdered, I felt alone and scared, and that I had no one to turn to. We'll help these kids, and I'll do what I can to help you take these bastards down, even if we have to do it bare handed."

This was the first time in a long, long time that Lucian had trusted somebody so entirely. His foster families had let him down so many times that he'd stopped trusting them. And then he'd been kidnapped, and he'd stopped trusting anyone but himself. But Markus seemed like a good person, one of very few genuinely good people that Lucian had met in a long time. He didn't need to hear that he hadn't deserved it. All he'd wanted as a teenager had been to be loved, and everything he had done for so long had been in an attempt to achieve that.

He nodded, finding there was a bit of a lump in his throat as Markus reassured him that he knew what it was like. Sometimes he forgot that Markus had been there too. He knew what it was like. But instead he just smiled as Markus put his hand on his shoulder. As terrifying as the thought of facing all of this again was, the thought of tearing it all down and bringing justice to everyone involved was almost worth it.

"Well then, Markus, darling, we better get cracking, shouldn't we?" He said, throwing himself back down onto the couch and reclaiming his laptop. He spread the sheets out on the coffee table in front of them and called up a number of files on his laptop. "So. If we at least know the people involved, we can target them directly. It just depends on how direct we want to be about these things. I can send some dodgy emails, get some software loaded onto their laptops that will let me tap their email communication and browsing history. Or... we could be very direct. By which I mean spend the next few nights breaking into their homes and offices and planting more sophisticated bugs. Ones that would allow us to access their phones, laptops, any device that they use within the Wi-Fi network. But... if they're involved in the police, getting ourselves in and out might be next to impossible, and we have to decide if the information we'd get would be beneficial enough to be worth the risk."

Markus smiled as Lucian nodded, his emotions were clear on his face, and Markus gave him a genuine, and kind smile. Something he hadn't really done in a long time. He understood Lucian's pain as much as he could and had wished he was there to help him through such a dark and scary time in his life. If he could go back and help him, he would in an instant. But he knew it was impossible, but now, in a way they could. Markus could help these kids, they both could. They could help stop them from having a similar fate like Lucian, or an even worse one if they weren't successful.

He joined him back at the couch as he grabbed his own computer and began to get to work as well. His eyebrow quirked when Lucian brought up two different solutions they could work with for now. Either going in through virtually and getting what they need or going the most direct way they could. But if it was true, that the law enforcement was in on this as well, it would cause nothing but trouble for them and would set off countless alarms and would only speed up the process they were trying to stop. "I think, for now, we need to go about this as careful as we can, unless proven to be useless. We can't afford to fuck it up this early. The last thing we need to do is break into the wrong house, or break-in while someone is still home, or get caught doing so. Fow now, we take things slow I think. Fair enough, Luc?" he said as he took brief looks at Lucian every now and then as spoke, his main attention was on the screen in front of him, as he was busy putting up firewalls and other security measures so his activity and real objective couldn't be detected until it was either too late, or not at all.

Lucian sighed as Markus opted for the more sensible option, almost exactly as he'd been expecting. "You're probably right. This might take a bit of time as I try to figure out how the hell to get them to open the virus in such a way that it won't be immediately... obvious." Lucian's face broke into a grin as an idea struck him.

"Markus, darling, I've just had an idea," He said as he got to his feet and paced around the room as he spoke. "What do you say we give them all a taste of their own medicine? We throw them a party. A massive fundraiser for the police department. With the support of the famous Lucian Mitchell, of course. I'm thinking a masquerade ball, because fuck me if I've got to organise another fashion show in two weeks. We make sure we invite those bastards who are behind the scenes. We attach the virus to the planning emails. We get the tracker in, we get a look behind the scenes, and we get them all in to one room. I'm thinking we invite everyone involved in this little plan to some... VIP drinks reception. And there, we wait for them. They'll more than likely forward the invitation to a more private email which might link us to one that will be more promising in terms of results with planning and so on." The poetic justice of it all just seemed to fit just right.

"From a tactical perspective, we're bringing them to us instead of going to them. They won't be expecting something like that, but they might just be expecting an attack when they're executing their plans. So we catch them off guard, and we catch them before they're supposed to execute their plan. Even if it doesn't work out, we have time to try and stop it." He was almost manic with the idea, as he mentally examined it from every angle. He whirled around to face Markus. "What do you think?"

Markus was busily tapping and clicking away on the computer while Lucian talked, his mind was elsewhere, but he was still able to take in what Lucian was saying. His attention was fully taken back when Lucian spoke of his idea, it would involve them bringing them to Lucian and Markus, instead of having to go out to them. It would be far less risky, but it would also make sense. Make them come to the two of them, with others in an event, a less hectic and worrisome event. Markus could do this far better than the fashion show he had done. He grinned and nodded as Lucian continued talking, his mind already bouncing from idea to idea.

He easily hopped to his feet, agrin overtook his face as his eyes twinkled with obvious mischief and ideas behind them. This was an idea that would be all too but perfect if it worked, they could stop it before anything happened, as well as if it went south, they'd have time, the faces, and everything they'd need to stop the kids from being taken. He looked at Lucian and nodded in agreement, "This is perfect. Bring them to us, and we do everything from there. This could go perfectly in our favor, or go horribly wrong. We have nothing to really lose in a 50/50 chance like this." he spoke with a somewhat manic tone in his voice as he spoke.

"Let's do it." he said all too simply with an outstretched hand, and a grin on his face.

Lucian's grin widened as Markus started talking about the plans, with just as much enthusiasm as Lucian. Everything seemed to be falling in to place. They had nothing to lose, and everything to gain. Markus held out his hand and Lucian pulled him in for a hug. It was brief and light, careful not to hurt Markus any more, before Lucian spun around and grinned. "I say this calls for a celebratory coffee. You sit yourself down on the couch and look after yourself, you did just get the shit kicked out of you last night," he instructed. "I'll get to party planning, you get to trying to find their official work emails and if you can find a personal one, even better.

Even as Lucian waited for the coffee to brew, he was planning. He called one of his favourite hotels, knowing that was a good location for the event and that was easy to get in and out of. He called as himself, and they were only too obliging to help him out. They agreed to source an orchestra and other special effects for him, but he requested that he be allowed to decorate the venue himself in advance. Partially so he could make sure it was forgiving for their plans, but also because it was still a Lucian Mitchell event and needed to look like one.

With a cup of coffee in one hand, he had the plans spread out in front of him as he made arrangements. The venue was the easy part. This needed to be suitably elaborate to pass as a legitimate event. Hell, this needed to be a legitimate event, just one that they had nefarious plans for.

It took a while of ringing around to get everything sorted, and it felt that hours passed. And by the time he flopped back on to the couch with basic plans in place, hours had passed. He ran a hand through his hair and grinned at Markus. "Nobody plans a party like Lucian Mitchell," he said. "You're gonna need a new suit. I wouldn't dare let you be seen wearing the same suit twice, even if your first one wasn't ruined."

His mind was still whirling, and he could feel the painkillers starting to wear off. But it was a good feeling, one that had him feeling alive. It made him feel in control of himself and his fate again. "I think that I'm going to have to make an appearance, shake the hands, take the photos, all that jazz, and then have to leave due to "illness" or something. The last thing Markus had exected to come from Lucian, is in fact what he did. He expected a handshake or at least a high five, but not a hug. It was brief and gentle, he could tell Lucian made sure he didn't hurt him than he already was. A grin form on his face as he listened to Lucian talk, he could feel the enthusiasm in his voice, it was rather endearing honestly. Markus sat and waited until Lucian brought coffee back to him, taking a sift of the sweet yet bitter bean juice, he looked back up as Lucian resumed talking. It made sense, he would need to have a different appearance, as well as a new suit due to it being a bit torn and weathered due to the attack. "Only one condition, I get to choose how it looks this time, deal?" he asked with a bit of a grin, he had some ideas starting to roll in his mind as he thought of what they'd be doing.

"I have high hopes for this one, Luc. May the odds be in our favor." he said as his lifted the mug in his hand and nodded to Lucian with a small smirk on his face. They'd have to be successful in this, otherwise, things would go down south for them so very quickly they wouldn't have the appropriate time to figure out what to do. They'd take precautions and set certain things up to help things go in their favor, it was the most they could do, and the best they could hope for.

Lucian rolled his eyes in mock complaint as Markus requested that he was allowed to choose how the suit looked. “What, you didn’t like my design last time?” He asked. “Fine, but I get final say. Only one of us is a fashion designer here, darling.” Lucian grinned as Markus held out his mug for a toast, and he clinked his against Markus’. He took a mouthful of his coffee as he emailed a friend of his asking them to design an invite. They owed him a favour anyway, and promised to get back to him with something within the day. Lucian sat back for a moment and sighed.

“I’m not denying this is an absolutely spectacular plan. I know it’s the best we’re going to get. But we also need to acknowledge that it is incredibly, incredibly dangerous. There’s two of us against... we’re not even sure how many of them. And while you’ve got a bit of colour back in those pretty little cheeks of yours, you’ll need to build up your strength again. I need to build up my stamina, and we both need to refine our abilities, get used to using them offensively. We need to train. We know they’ve somehow protected their bozos against our abilities, but if they’ve protected the brains as well, we’re going to need to outsmart and outpace them as opposed to outpowering them. I know a spot. Nobody really pays much attention to it, it’s a place to train unnoticed. But we probably need to start tonight.” He decided against mentioning it was a popular villain training spot. He knew there’d be nobody there for the foreseeable future. It was hard to find if you didn’t know about it, and you couldn’t really find it unless you were specifically looking for it. And that was why it was perfect for what they were after.

Markus grinned as Lucian doubted if he liked his outfit last time and after reassuring him countless times that you liked what Lucian did, he just needed something that was less flashy and would keep him out of the suspecting eye. Some time had passed by as they continued looking into things and making plans on what they would do. Time seemed to tick by all too fast, as the next thing Markus knew it was barely visible outside, meaning the day had entirely escaped them. He gritted his teeth as he sat back, it seemed like they didn't get much done and that much time passed by. They discussed spending more time on training and using their abilities for more on the offense on Markus' end and more offensive on Lucian's end.

Markus had agreed to go where Lucian had told him of, it'd be there best bet of being able to train and practice their abilities out of the public eye and away from any trouble that could come from experimenting with their powers in other ways than what they were used to. By this time Markus was sitting on the couch with the laptop in his lap, legs crossed and rubbing his temples. His brain felt like it was going to explode from looking at a screen for hours on end, looking at coding and emails, devising plans. He groaned as he closed the computer and put it on the coffee table, finally standing up and stretching. He looked at Lucian as he stretched, "How about we take a break and get some food? And relax for a bit, we've been doing this all day." Markus said with a bit of a tired yawn and sigh as he needed a break, he didn't want to stop, but he knew they needed a break and a little bit of relation couldn't hurt them before they began their training the following day. It was going to be rough, and Markus knew that, and he was prepared for it. He'd do anything for those kids and he was prepared to make the ultimate choice if it came down to it.

When Lucian worked, he became entirely engulfed in it. He spent his time finalising arrangements, attempting to track down official contact details, attempting to build something that would fly under the radar of most basic antivirus packages and still get them all the information they needed, and planning the event itself. So when Markus sat back, closing his laptop, it was the first time Lucian had looked up in about two hours. He was shocked to see how much time had passed since they'd started this. It explained why the pounding in his head had come back and why his muscles were stiff from having sat on the floor for so long. Even in his own apartment, he'd always preferred sitting on the floor. Watching movies, working, all of it seemed to result with him sitting with his back against the couch.

"Yeah, food sounds good. What do you feel like? I know a few good Asian food places, few good Italian restaurants, and one or two burger joints. Or, if you really want some fresh air, we could head back to my place and I can cook. Or order pizza from the amazing place down the road from my apartment." Lucian closed his own laptop and got to his feet, stretching, and digging some painkillers out of his bag.

Doing something about all of this made him feel... like he'd taken back control. He was planning something again, working on something that felt vaguely like what he used to do. It also felt like he was throwing a middle finger to the heroes who had abandoned him. He was taking back control of his life and he was going to get his revenge. Pure fury was powering him at the thought that this was happening again, that nothing had changed. The fact that it hadn't just been him in the first place.

Markus grinned happily as Lucian agreed that food sounded like a good plan. He hadn't realized how hungry he actually was until he heard a small growl come from his stomach, smiling awkwardly he grabbed his phone and a list of different food places, after they finally had agreed on something, after bickering back and forth on what they were more in the mood for they finally agreed to get Chinese food, cliche and simple, but it was an agreeance they both could get on board with. Finally, the food had arrived after about thirty or so minutes, opening the door Markus quickly handed the delivery guy a twenty, taking the food and closed the door behind him.

They quickly got to the food and casually talked for a while, it was all too casual and almost felt, nice? That was all that he could really think of it. It was just random things and everyday topics, of their favorite things to do and what they thought of Scarriden as a place and how much of a shithole it was. Finally, the food had been absolutely demolished, as well as most of the snacks that Markus had gotten earlier that day, he'd need to go out and get some more he thought to himself. He could finally feel some strength coming back to him as the time passed, his body was less sore and riged in movements. Markus had offered Lucian his bedroom again and the night passed by quickly as the sun came in through the windows, shedding its light throughout the whole lower floor of his apartment. He fumbled into the bathroom and took a quick shower, seeing all the bruises on his body, he realized he'd need to be more careful from here on out.

It was still early and Lucian was clearly still asleep, and he had an idea. For once, he'd show Lucian something he was good at, he wasn't the best, but he wasn't horrible. He got into the kitchen and got to work, soon the apartment was filled with the scents of freshly brewed coffee, scrambled eggs, bacon, toast, and fruit as Markus busily slaved away making breakfast for them. He set out two plates of the breakfast he prepared on the table in the small kitchen, "Whenever your lazy ass is ready, breakfast is up!" he called with a teasing tone as he went to clean up the mess he made, dirty pots and pans and utensils were everywhere, and he easily put them in the sink and cleaned up the small space until Lucian decided to join him for breakfast.

Lucian couldn't remember the last time he'd been so... relaxed around somebody else. Especially not a hero. But he found himself enjoying it. Enjoying it almost too much. It made him feel so... so normal. Usually, the only time he felt this normal was when he was completely engulfed in his work, so busy he didn't let the thoughts sneak in. But when he was spending time with Markus like this... sure, the anger was there, bubbling underneath the surface, burning away that deep-seated panic. But it didn't engulf his whole being like it usually did. Like he usually let it.

But night fell, and Lucian gratefully excepted Markus' offer of a bed. Because, he didn't want to admit it, but he wasn't exactly eager to walk across the city by himself. Not after the attack. And besides, this feeling was so nice, that he felt as though leaving the apartment would cause it to shatter. He liked being around Markus. He made him feel normal.

But the minute his eyes closed, the feeling vanished, replaced by hours upon hours of nightmares. This was one rare night when he seemed not to call out or yell or make any noise other than a few distressed mumbles. They seemed to last forever, morphing from one hell to another. Sometimes, he was alone, sometimes, he wasn't. Sometimes he was powerless to save them.

When he woke up, it was with a jolt. There was a few seconds where he forgot where he was, and fear made his heart pound and made him wake up enough to remember. He groaned to himself, dragging his hands down his face. The peace from the night before had gone, replaced by an acute uneasiness, the lingering remnants of a harsh night. He should have known it wasn't going to last.

He felt as though he was still waking up as he made his way down the stairs, but despite his bad mood, he smiled in surprise at the sight of breakfast. "Can't think of the last time somebody made me breakfast after I spent the night in their place," he remarked with a teasing smirk as he sat down. He took a forkful of the scrambled eggs and rolled his eyes. "Holy shit, these are so good, they put mine to shame." he remarked.

Markus smiled when Lucian finally rolled out of bed and walked down the stairs, even though he could tell he didn't get much sleep, and if he did, it didn't take him much to guess that it wasn't a good night's rest. He understood what it was like, spending your sleeping hours in terror and endless nightmares, he knew what it was like to never find comfort in sleep and if he could, he'd make sure that Lucian could get some peaceful sleep. But he knew it was beyond his capabilities, sadly enough. He gave him a small smile at the joke Lucian made, shaking his head as part of his response, "If you keep saying stuff like that, people will start talking and assuming things, Lucian." he said with a sly grin and a small wink as he finally sat down on one of the chairs by the table. An even bigger smile appeared when Lucian complimented the food, even going as far as to say his put Lucian's own to shame.

He was never one to boast about his skills, especially food, but he was rather proud of his cooking skills, however small they may have been. He had always been complimented by people he had short relationships with, but that was simply cuz they were being nice or wanted something else from him. He shook his head as he knew now wasn't the time for those thoughts, they were far behind him and he didn't need to dwell on those. "Well, thank you. I'm not confident in my abilities, but, if you're a friend of mine, I'll always make sure that you have a roof over your head, and good food." he said with a small smile as he took a few bites of his own cooking, it could have used a little bit more salt and some other seasonings, but it would pass for now. After he thought for a bit he looked back up after looking down at his plate of food, "So, do we start the training today, or what? What's the plan here, boss?"

Oh, how he loved it when somebody teased him back. Lucian’s smirk widened, and he just shrugged as Markus suggested people would be getting ideas. They could get worse ideas. He shook the thought away as Markus asked him about beginning training that day. He sighed, running a free hand through his hair. There went even the thought of peace. He grimaced at the word boss.

“First things first, drop the word Boss. But... yeah. In an ideal world we’d keep it to after dark, but due to our time constraints I don’t think that’s feasible. Not to mention that if you can fight in broad daylight, you’ll be even stronger in a dimmer setting. As a freelance photographer, you just give me a camera and I have a reason to be skulking anywhere at any given time, so we don’t need to worry about that. In an ideal world, we’d also have more people to practice against but...” he sighed and shook his head. “I don’t want to drag anyone else in to this. I know one or two people who would help, but one of them would probably just want to kick my ass and tell me I’ve had it coming, and the other... Mm, let’s just say it’s complicated.” Their relationship had taken many forms throughout the years, but after one fateful drunken evening, things had gotten decidedly more awkward and Lucian did not want to go back there. They’d be fine, just the two of them. They had to be. Lucian quickly finished eating, although he wished he could sit longer and enjoy it.

“I need to go back to my apartment, shower, get changed, and sort a few other things. I’ll meet you down there about eleven? Oh, and you’ve been far too hospitable letting me hog your bed for the past two nights. Mine is open if you feel like letting me return the favour,” he said with a wink as he pulled on his jacket.

Markus simply nodded as Lucian told him to drop the use of the word 'boss', even though he meant nothing bad by it, he understood and easily complied. He listened as Lucian explained that they'd keep to using the darkness as their go-to, mainly to keep themselves out of eyesight from others. Finally, after finishing off his own food he drank the rest of the coffee he made and put the dishes in the sink as he nodded to Lucian after saying they'd meet back up at the place that night. "Will do." he stated plainly as he cleaned up the rest of the kitchen, turning to Lucian when he said he was leaving for now and that if he ever wanted to, his bed back at his place was open to him anytime. A small smirk covered his face at the comment, "You wish, Mitchell. You wish." he said with a teasing tone and wink as the man left his apartment.

He sighed as he heard the door finally close, leaving him alone in his apartment now. The awkward silence filled the room all too quickly as the reality of him being alone for the first time in a few days settled in. Normally he was happy to be by himself, but something about it now unnerved and even caused a little bit of panic in him. Ever since the attack, he was almost in a sense, scared to be alone by himself. He quickly shook that thought out of his head and after putting everything away he decided he'd take a nap until it was time for him and Lucian to meet back up again.

Time passed by quickly for Markus, he woke up, showered and changed his clothes, making sure what he wore would help with keeping him out of the public eye, as well as keeping him out of attention's eye as well. He looked up the place Lucian wanted to meet him at, he knew where it was and it wasn't very far from where he lived. He packed up a few things and made his way out of his apartment, the light of the moon and city lights being the only real light that helped guide his way, even though he kept to the darkness as he made his way to the designated spot. After scouting the place out, making sure no one was around, watching them or anything that could be tripped as an alarm he put down his supplies in a small little alcove in one of the corners, keeping to the rafters of the place as he waited for Lucian to arrive, whether or not he'd wait and see. If this was an elaborate scheme of Lucian's to get him somewhere alone to be killed or captured, he'd give him credit. But for now, he sat out of eyesight and kept to the shadows until he was sure it was safe for him to come out.

Walking across the city felt strange. Things seemed... so bright. A young girl with bright coloured hair eagerly ran up to him, asking for a photo. There was nothing unusual about her, but as he posed for the selfie, he just knew that she was like him. She had no idea of the danger that was facing her. He got back to his own apartment and felt deeply uneasy. Nothing had been touched. His apartment was exactly as he'd left it. Nothing was disturbed. But he couldn't shake the feeling that someone had been there.

He changed into a hoodie and leggings, quickly double checking his safe and making sure that everything there was untouched. She struggled to find anything that they could have gone for. His paranoia levels were set to extreme, he told himself. He could be imagining it.

He spent the afternoon sketching, drawing up suit designs both for himself and for Markus. Even though he hadn't gotten any explicit directions from Markus, he almost already knew what Markus would have wanted. Simple. Black. Stylish. He sketched two outfits for himself. One for Lucian Mitchell, and one for Maelstrom. The Maelstrom one was designed to allow him to fight; forgiving material, hidden pockets for weapons, and as plain as he dared get. The evening grew dark around him, and soon it was time to leave. He set up an alarm system before he left, one that would notify him on his phone and make as much of a racket as possible if somebody as much as stepped too heavy outside his apartment. He brought his laptop and all of his important files with him in his backpack, as well as a few bottles of water and snacks.

He pulled his hair in to a ponytail and pulled his hood up over his head, buried his hands in his pockets, and kept his head down as he made his way across town. This late, he wasn't taking any chances. He didn't intend on using knives with Markus, too much risk. But he still kept a knife clutched tight in his pocket as he walked.

He reached the spot and looked around. He could already tell that there was someone there, and he dumped his bag. "Hello, Markus," he called, grinning.

Markus stayed to the shadows of the metal rafters of the building, staking cloaked thanks to his abilities. Thoughts ran through his mind as he planned on what they'd do, how far the training would go and what they'd be doing until their plans came be and if they'd go off without a hitch. Time had slowly passed by as he remained hidden, thoughts began to go through his mind if Lucian had changed his mind and decided to just not end up coming. He sighed and was about to get back to his feet when he heard soft footsteps enter. He kept his ears perked to where the sound came from, seeing a figure walk in from the darkness down below. Lucian. A smirk formed on his face when he heard Lucian call out his name, knowing he was here. Somewhere. Anywhere seeing he blended in with the darkness that surrounded them except for the poor excuse for lighting that they had, which would occasionally flicker.

Markus dropped down from above, landing softly, and slowly walked towards Lucian, a few feet separating the two. "Lucian." he said plainly, and before Lucian would be able to have enough time to react he formed a barrier around the both of them, disappearing from sight for a moment, and then reappearing right behind Lucian. A small grin formed on his face as he spoke in a low tone, "You sure you really want to do this?" he said with a sly smirk.

The feeling that someone had been in his apartment had weighed heavily on Lucian's mind. And then Markus appeared and didn't waste any time in getting ready for a fight. Having Markus right behind Lucian usually would have been a prompt for a flirtatious comment, but instead, Lucian just grinned. Nothing like a fight to relax the mind. Tactics started flooding through Lucian's mind.

Markus seemed to tend to like to use constructs of one form or another. Distance wasn't an issue as such, but Lucian knew that when their powers were matched against each other, distance would work better for Lucian. That said, when they were dealing with the goons, they needed to be prepared to assume that their abilities wouldn't be as effective. So, instead, Lucian, still facing away from Markus, threw himself backwards and used the momentum he created to pull Markus over his shoulder, throwing him against the ground and pinning him there.

"You think I'm going to go easy on you, Vasco? You can think again," Lucian said, leaning in close to Markus' ear as he spoke. "First mistake. We've seen they have some level of resistance to our abilities. That implies that they're aware of them. Don't waste your energy on trying to spook them. Either keep them at a distance, or go physical." He instructed. When he'd been on the streets, he'd learned quickly that a scared teenage kid was an easy target and you drew the wrong kinds of people. He'd also learned that some of them would go from wanting to steal his sleeping bag to wanting him dead if he revealed he had abilities, and so he'd had to learn to fight without giving himself away. The difference was, that if you put up a fight, they'd generally lose interest and move on, looking for an easier target. That wasn't an option here.

Markus grinned as Lucian spoke. He knew he was right, he had to admit that much. They knew what they were up against, for the most part, people that knew what their powers were and their general fighting patterns. They'd be nothing but easy targets for them, and it caused a bit of anxiety to form in his stomach. Normally, he fought people he could easily have an advantage over, normal people without powers. Common goons and robbers, murderers, robbers, and the like, but the people they were training to go up against were different. They had powers, at least some of them did, but the majority of them didn't and they were still able to resist their abilities. He took a deep sigh, easily pushing off Lucian and getting back to his feet. "I hate it when you're right." he said with a grin as he formed a dark and shadowy cloak around him, small, slender like tendrils formed from the mist that encased case his form and disappeared into the darkness. Out of sight, out of mind, right?

All went silent as he retreated to his domain. For others, it would be impossible to see anything. Being able to see anything more than a few inches from you face was impossible. But Markus knew that if Lucian focused enough, he'd detect him easily. From the darkness Markus spoke, his voice sounding like a ghostly whisper that came from all around Lucian, using his control over the darkness to his advantage. "If you can't see your enemy, what do you do, Lucian?" he questioned, his voice coming across as more of a tease than a genuine question. He knew if Lucian were to focus on where Markus was, he'd be a sitting duck. From within the shadows, Markus was able to see clearly, albeit it felt more like looking through night vision, everything had an odd shape and aurora around it. Something that took his mind a while to accustom to, as seeing in the dark didn't come easily to him, he spent far too long trying to perfect his visibility. "So, Lucian. What is it?" he mused from the darkness, his voice sounding right behind Lucian in the darkness. But would Lucian's attack really be going for Markus if he decided to attack blindly into the dark abyss, or was it simply one of Markus' tricks at attempting an attack of his own..?

Lucian didn't resist as Markus pushed him off, instead just climbing back onto his own feet and brushing himself down a little. He just smirked as Markus joked about hating it when he was right, before the shadows wrapped around Markus and he apparently disappeared from view. Lucian had to resist the temptation to roll his eyes. Ever the dramatic type.

Somebody else might have been more startled by the ghostly whisper, but Lucian just smirked and pulled a shield around himself. The slight glimmer of the force field gave off a little more light and made it easier to see his immediate surroundings. It did nothing to cut through the darkness of the warehouse, but Lucian didn't need any more light as it was. He had everything he needed.

"Oh, Markus, darling," he drawled, a mimicry of his own speech patterns. Attacking straight away was a fool's game. "You're hiding from me. Are you too afraid to come face to face with me? Too afraid to try me in hand-to-hand?" He called, his voice light and taunting. "No need to be a gentleman, darling. I'm not afraid to play rough."

There, in the shadows. Markus' voice had apparently come from right behind Lucian, but Lucian swore he could see something or someone. Still. It could be a trick. A clever trick, to be fair. If he attacked, he'd be momentarily exposed and if he targeted wrong, it would be the perfect chance for Markus to attack him.

"Well, first things first, if you were targeting multiple targets, as we well might be, they'd more than likely just divide the room between them and start firing. How would you deal with that, Markus?" He called, throwing his arms wide and turning, scanning the room as he did so. [color=#2d2a2f]"And not to mention, if one of them can punch through this lovely force field of mine, they may well have developed some form of night vision. They might be able to see you perfectly clearly."[/color[

Distraction was always key in these circumstances, he'd learned. Keep talking, keep them distracted, and look for a way out. He knew exactly what he would do in this circumstance in reality- but it was something he hadn't done in a long time and he wasn't sure he still had the control to do it without causing destruction or seriously harming Markus and ruining all of their plans. He wasn't trying it now.

So, instead, he hurled a blast of energy towards where he was pretty sure Markus was and let the force carry him backwards a few steps, just in case Markus had been behind him. But he had to drop his shield, just for a second, to make sure that the blast wouldn't rebound or absorb any excess energy.

Markus grinned as he watched Lucian struggle with what to do. What choice to make, if any, if he should attack behind him, or anywhere else. Proving his distraction of throwing his voice around proved to be useful, but it only did so much. He knew Lucian was smart, and Lucian knew Markus was one for showing off. He rolled his eyes at the taunts from Lucian, sure, they hit a bit hard, but he wasn't going to fall for it, not yet. It was far too soon to go for the offensive. For now he'd stay in the shadows where he felt most comfortable, simply observing Lucian. It was when Lucian began droning on with an obvious distraction he rolled his eyes again, remaining silent as he walked silently in the darkness. Originally, he was indeed behind Lucian. Watching him like a hawk, a predator watching his prey from the darkness. The last thing that he expected was for Lucian to fire off an attack to his left, which was aimed right for Markus, "Oh fuck." was all he was able to say before the attack made impact. Before he could react fast enough he was blown back and thrown into a wall, groaning slightly as he slowly groveled on the cement ground. Slowly and steadily he made it back to his feet as he rubbed his head, a small trickle of blood slid down his face as the wall cut his forehead. "Alright, Mitchel. Next time, shut up." he said with a smirk as he shot off an attack of his own, shadowy tendrils erupted from behind Lucian, attempting to wrap around his arms and leg, holding him in place.
