a character in “Marked 2”, as played by nightwolf

Description

My Name is: Duncan Reidon (pronounced Ray-Don)

I am the: Beta

I am age: 26

My mate is/I hope my Mate is: He has not really decided who he would like his mate to be but he is leaving it all down to fate. He appreciates all the females in the pack even if some find his soft spot quicker than others.

In human form I look like: Image

As a wolf i look like:

Personality: Duncan is caring and protective over everyone, especially if he is close to a person. He can have a very soft spot for people who manage to make him smile. Of course being the Beta he can be very serious and assertive in situations where he needs to be.

Likes: being outside, hanging around with the other pack members, he although enjoys teaching the Omegas how to defend themselves against other wolves in case the situation calls for it. But he goes easy on them since they are only young. ( will develop more as the thread develops)

Dislikes: People who are aggressive for no reason, he doesn’t really like the smell of fragrant soaps as they mess up his nose of course he will wash with them but it is usually non fragrance soap. (again will add more i like to develop characters)
How you feel about the pack: Duncan cares deeply about the pack and would defend them at a drop of a hat,

Other: Duncan is good friends with the Alpha since they more or less grew up together and so formed a trusting friendship. He often jokes with the Alpha and spars with him if he can manage to jump on him alone.

So begins...

"Sorry to hear that." Jeff said with a sombre nod of his head. "If there's anything Emmy and I can do at any point, don't think twice about asking OK?"

The solemn moment was broken as Adrian sauntered back into the room, weaving past a few other people from town who'd shown up - including a few younger children - greeting them on the way and coming up behind Jeff, landing a heavy hand on his shoulder.

"Hey bro!" Adrian said exuberantly, "Don't think I've seen you since the last moon, where you been hiding? No Emmy tonight?"

"Hey bud," Jeff replied, "well it's a new term, that's always busy. And Nate's not been well so Emmy's keeping him home this weekend. I was just talking to Duncan actually about his father. I'm sure a week or two's optional respite from duty wouldn't be unreasonable given the circumstances."

"Oh yeah for sure," Adrian said, suddenly adopting a serious expression and looking at Duncan, "as much or as little as you feel buddy. Keep busy when you need to keep busy, take it easy when you need to take it easy."

"Kiyoshi," Tabby repeated to make sure she'd heard right, "good to meet you. And thanks! It's an amazing home. How many people actually live here?"

She noted how Lyra referred to 'her mom' as not wanting leftovers, suggesting that this place was actually Lyra's home. Tabby's hunger couldn't help but strongly register the invitation to attack the food, and she saw that people were already starting to help themselves.

"Was the lady running the music group..." Tabby asked cautiously, suddenly noting a similarity, "...by any chance your mom?"

She also raised an eyebrow when Anya said she was happy for Lyra and Kiyoshi, suggesting their coming together had been a fairly recent development.

Duncan looked to the two men who commented about what he should do about his duties to the pack when his father passed on. Of course with Jeff and Adrian being older than him he treated them as elders or really close friends he gave a soft sigh he spoke. " I understand both of your concerns, really. But I am going to see what happens and I'll cut down on my workload for patrols and such and try to enjoy myself more, spend more time with the pack." he explained giving a smile to then both.

Ducan hated to be worried about since he was always so concerned about everyone else's well being instead of his own. He reached into the ice box and pulled out a beer he would only have one or two then just a few sodas and fruit juices.

Adrian smiled supportively, and reached into the box to grab a beer the same time Duncan did. He gave Jeff an eye but Jeff shook his head, declining.

"Yeah I hear you buddy." Adrian said to Duncan, "'course we'll need our wits about us just for the next few days while we confirm there's nothing behind the new faces around here, which I'm sure will be the case. Speaking of which...who is that?"

He discreetly indicated Tabby, whom he had not yet seen. But his gaze was soon drawn to his daughter who was standing talking to the new girl, and the way she clung to Kiyoshi. Suddenly his mind was awash with what this meant, not only for Lyra, but also potentially for James. It was, of course, something that would need to be attended with certain formalities, but naturally he could forgo those for tonight and take care of it tomorrow. It must have been very recent because otherwise Tai would have mentioned it in the car.

He leaned over to Duncan and nodded his head in their direction, with a little smirk. "Did you know anything about that?"

-----

Tabby thought about what Kiyoshi was saying for a moment, then laughed and nodded.

"Oh right," she said, "that would have been Lance. Yeah he's the one I travelled here with. Some jerk invited us to his studio here and we came but the studio doesn't seem to exist. I don't know what his game was but then I kinda wandered into the school and met Lyra and Anya, and they invited me up here so...yeah I guess coming to this town wasn't a total loss after all!"

When she finished talking her eyes drifted off in thought and a slight pang of sadness appeared on her face. She knew that her story didn't explain why she hadn't just gone home after not finding the studio, and the thought of going back was something she wasn't quite ready to face up to...but she knew she couldn't impose on these people for too long. She had her own home to go to which was a perfectly good home...she just wasn't looking forward to the questions she'd have to face when she got there.

"Do you live in this house or down in town?" she asked, diverting the conversation away from herself, "I was saying to Lyra, there's a similar kind of place to this in my town. I mean, like, a house where a whole bunch of kids live and there's a kind of patriarch guy who's a big cheese around town. Never been in that house myself but it's interesting that you seem to have the same kind of set-up here."

"Was the lady running the music group..." Tabby asked cautiously, suddenly noting a similarity, "...by any chance your mom?"

Lyra smiled to Tabby with her question, nodding in response as she glanced around the room quickly in search for her mother. "Yes, Tai is my mother. I was helping her with the music group after school. There usually aren't too many people that go to it and, well, you can always count on family," Lyra said with a smile, although the words felt bitter on her lips. Her gaze fell upon Mr. Dean, a silent chuckle passing through her at the panda costume. He was a good teacher, one of her favorites. It was rude for Ray to trick him like that. But then again, it was her party. And there was always a surprise at anything Ray attented.

Lyra's gaze shifted slightly, noticing in dismay as Adrian whispered to Duncan and met her gaze. So he knew, or at least expected. She had hoped to catch her father blind, to be the one that told him with Kiyoshi. Things never went as planned, she supposed. Even so, they still needed to formally announce themselves to Adrian and Tai, not just as Alpha but as her parents also. This was something that Lyra was unsure how to approach. She had no idea what they would think of Kiyoshi as their daughter's mate. But that was a matter for another time, Lyra decided, turning her attention back to Tabby, Anya, and Kiyoshi as they discussed Lance, wondering slightly how that topic had been reached. For now, however, she simply wanted to enjoy the night in peaceful bliss. Everything else could wait.

"Do you live in this house or down in town?" Tabby asked, diverting the conversation away from herself, "I was saying to Lyra, there's a similar kind of place to this in my town. I mean, like, a house where a whole bunch of kids live and there's a kind of patriarch guy who's a big cheese around town. Never been in that house myself but it's interesting that you seem to have the same kind of set-up here."

Lyra smiled to Tabby, aware of her attempt to change the subject. She did not impose, however. Tabby would tell them when she was ready. "Yes, we all live here. Most of the students between 14 and 20 do. It helps form. . . community bonds," she said after a pause, not wanting to reveal too much of their society to the clandestine wolf. "It's fun, everyone gets a lot closer than we normally would, not like we have much of a choice. My father, Adrian, would be the patriarch that you were talking about for this town." Lyra laughed slightly to this, thinking of teasing Adrian with this title. Although Lyra had a different mentality than her father, she believed that he was a good alpha. She only wished that he could see the same qualities inside her, or at least stronger in herself than in James.

"So, make yourself comfortable, Tabby. I still have to give the birthday girl her gift, want me to introduce you to Ray?" Lyra asked. Her voice trailed off slightly as she was diverted by the door opening. Lyra smiled to see Jac and Gavin, glad that neither one had managed to screw it up.

"Guess I won't be alone for the moon," Lyra said, squeezing Kiyoshi's hand as she leaned against him tenderly. So what if Adrian figured out they were together before they had a chance to tell him? He was going to find out eventually, she surmised, deciding that for tonight she could loosen her reigns not calculate her next ten steps to a tee.

Duncan shook his head as Adrian mentioned Lyra and Kiyoshi " first I've seen about it bud. You can't at least try to look a bit happy for her. You look like someone smashed you car up on purpose" Duncan whispered back taking a long swig of his beer. Duncan looked over to Jac as she slowly walked in hand in hand with Gavin, he had to say he was in shock two mate pairings in one night, yes the pack was large but two Pairings. Had all the girls sat round a tub of ice cream decidings when they would reveal they're mate then suddenly giggle shrilly. That was what teenage girls did right? Of course he knew that the process of the female wolf revealing themselves to another wolf was purely natural and coincedential, it was never down to the hand you have in the game it what cards your dealt.

Sighing he sipped at his beer, " catch you in a bit Ade I'm going to mingle" he said trying to sound cheerful, he smiled softly giving Adrian a soft hit on the arm. Squeezing past the group of people he spotted Anya " hey " he said giving a light smile.

Anya was leaning against the wall staring into space, apart from everyone else in the room, when Jac and Gavin entered. A silence seemed to echo for just a second, causing her to look up through her hair. Her throat constricted the moment that she did and her stomach twisted unpleasantly once again. She glanced between Lyra and Kiyoshi and Gavin and Jac. Jealousy. That's what she felt. Bowing her head, she chewed her bottom lip hard. Anya pushed off the wall, her hair swinging behind her like a golden sheet. Ignoring everything else around her, including Tabby and Gavin's reunion and Duncan's approach, she headed for the door. Brushing past Duncan, she practically ran from the room, her heels tapping against the floor. Her red dress hindered her movement very little.

In the hall, she grabbed her earlier discarded jacket throwing it over her shoulders before she disappeared through the front door, slamming it behind her. Leaning against the smooth wood for a second, she closed her eyes tightly. Walking down the stone steps, she sat herself on the bottom one, eyes still firmly closed. Bringing her knees up to her chest, she rested her forehead on them. Of course she was happy for her family, but that didn't stop the feeling of loneliness that made her feel sick. It was almost as though a part of her was missing. And she longed to find it. Fury replaced her earlier jealousy and she released a frustrated noise from her lips, clutching at her blonde locks.

All she wanted was to run, but she didn't think the others would approve of her running off on her own, especially Duncan.

Duncan was surprised at Anya's sudden take off from the house, finishing of his beer he stepped outside his face hit by a cold bl sat of wind. The temperature did tend to drop and then raise in the forest, which meant you couldnt really be prepared for the weather except when you physically saw it change like when it snowed during the winter. Placing the empty bear bottle in the recycling box and slowly walked down the steps sitting down next to Anya. Duncan raised his hand a placed a comforting arm around Anya's shoulders, stroking them softly with his thumb.

" you have to think about what your going to let people think if you storm off like that, and it makes me worry too. Do you want to talk about what's wrong?" Duncan asked his head dipping down to get a better look at Anya. Duncan hated seeing anyone upset it made him feel bad too.

Duncan's eyes grew soft when Anya's head lifted up revealing tears, he was hurt when she shook off his arm and then spoke of how she might never find her mate. It was true most females would reveal their mate as soon as they receive there wolf if other females didn't find there mate it was just a strange thing. " I haven't found my mate yet, how jealous do you think I feel of everyonelse.....I want to find someone....I know I do but I think sometimes it's a waiting game a both ends both for the female and male" Duncan avoided using the term boy and girl as both him and Anya were adults now. He walked closer to Anya marvelling at how beautiful she looked in the moonlight.

" it'll happen one day you see...when you least expect it...a friend of mine's mate revealed herself to him while he was sitting on the toilet" Duncan gave a soft chuckle " so It can't be any worse than that can it?" he asked dipping his head and giving one of his more cheerful smiles to Anya.

Anya managed a small smile in return for Duncan's one. Somehow he always had a way of making her feel better and ever since she'd moved into the Pack House she'd gone to the beta for comfort. The others were great and always there for her, but when Duncan truly smiled there was a sparkle in his eyes that instantly made her heart lift. Even now, when she felt at her lowest he was the one who had come to support her. Glancing back at the moon that hung in the darkened curtain of night, she frowned slightly. It was so strange had a bright orb that orbited miles away from them could cause so many problems for so many different people. It broke her heart to stare at it, knowing that once again she probably wouldn't be running free through the trees. Another month would pass and she would wait in the Pack house for the others to return.

Leaning against Duncan's side, she didn't meet his gaze as she whispered. "Do you ever get a feeling for who your mate might be? I know that the males are unaware until they're told, but do you ever...hope it's someone, or wish it's someone?" It was kind of personal, but she needed to know. What if the male rejected the female? It was something that she worried about. Well in fact she worried about everything related to the subject. At least Duncan would answer her straight, or at least she hoped that he would.

Ducan smiled in return but her question had him pretty much stumped. Taking a deep breath he spoke " well the wolf tends to let us know around the time that the female has received her wolf. So I think we really leave it down to you to let us know, of course males tend to get there hopes up on certain people. But it's not a let down if we don't really get who we thought we would since our actual mate completes us. This the sort of thing your looking for I only know what I was taught."

Duncan chuckled softly as he looked up at the moon, a soft smile on his face. He thought to his father as this time wondering how he was.

Anya nodded, seemingly satisfied with his answer. So it didn't really matter who they wanted it to be because it would be pushed upon them anyway. With a gentle sigh, she slipped her fingers through Duncan's squeezing his hand gently without actually turning to look at him. It was her way of thanking him without explicitly doing so. Instead, she kept her eyes upon the moon for a moment longer, before silently turning and heading back towards the house, still holding Duncan's hand in hers. When she reached the bottom of the steps, she dropped it slowly ascending them before halting at the front door. With a smile over her shoulder, she opened the door and gestured for Duncan to follow her back into the Pack House. She didn't really want to return, but she felt guilty. It wasn't Ray's fault and besides, it wasn't really anyone's fault that she felt this way. They had chosen for this to befall them before it befell her.

Silently, she slipped back into the dining room. Instantly she was aware of the tension that hung around the room. Arching an eyebrow she glanced around before frowning slightly. Seeing as most of them were engaged, she sidled up to Jac and Gavin, taking Duncan with her. Tapping Jac briefly on the shoulder, she gave her a quizzical look before turning to Gavin and doing the same. Anya's senses had always been a bit sharper than most other people's. She liked to observe people and so she easily recognised moods and atmospheres amongst them.

"What happened?" She asked, looking around at the other conversations. Tension seemed to fill the room, even more so with the new girl Tabby and to Anya her body seemed rigid. But perhaps she was imagining it. "It looks like someone dropped a stink bomb in here. Wait, Ray hasn't has she? I told her not!n Especially at her own party." Sniffing the air, she looked for anything else that might be causing this sudden mood change throughout the room, but she could see nothing that was particular obvious. Knitting her eyebrows together, she looked back to Jac and Gavin, ignoring the fact that they probably wanted to be alone. They were at a party after all. Alone time was not something they were going to get in that moment.

"What happened?" Anya's voice came up behind Gavin, he turned around and frowned at her, a tad bit frustrated.

"Lots of things are happening." He shrugged passively. He still hadn't had time to process it all and with the constant want of packmates to jabber at him didn't help. Though, he supposed, since they knew so little about his background, it was to be expected. Gavin found himself looking around for Calvin.

He wanted to tell them, everyone, suddenly, about Tabitha and him. But Tabs, he knew, didn't know anything about what she was. He believed it when his dad told him without much convincing- probably because he was ten. Gavin had this internal battle of how to tell her. He felt like he should be the one to do it- he was her family, after all. The question was: how to get her to believe him? He was afraid of the answer.

"Lone wolves are in town, at the same time my long-lost sister shows up. Apparently someone was looking for her. Ares is being... well, Ares. Mates are being revealed, but you already know all about that." Gavin couldn't shake the feeling that something big was around the corner. He wasn't about to tell either of them what Calvin had talked about at the beach, he'd never rat out a friend, and he wasn't entirely sure if he and Jac wanted to jump on board or not yet. Also, no doubt that Duncan would go tell Adrian and it would unfoil some kind of drama. Gavin hated drama.

He wished that he could blame the moon, but it seemed like the moon had absolutely minimal to do with what ever it was that was going on.

"Something is going on. Out there, in here. I tell you, the only way this could get more strange would be if Evon walked right in that door acting all motherly toward me." Gavin snickered and munched on some kind of distorted finger-food. He suddenly looked pointedly at Duncan, "How was Calvin at patrol today?"

Duncan was brought back to reality when Anya took his hand he had been having a lot of those moments these past few days, simply detaching himself from everything around him and then he would simply snap back to reality. Anya's touch brought him back out of it.

He followed Anya into the house and noticed how tense everyone seemed, he clos the door behind him and paused to look at his watch. Where did the time go these days he would probably get another beer in and then head home for the night, well he said home he was always welcome at him parents house and he had been way to distracted to actually go back to his apartment in town. He was also welcome at the pack house if he ever didn't want to go home.

Pulling out his phone he sent a quick message to his mother asking how his father was and informing her that he would be coming home soon.

Again it was that crash landing feeling of coming down to earth when Gavin spoke asking how Calvin was at patrol. " we'll he seems very on the ball" he commented walking up to Gavin.

Anya frowned, her eyes finding Tabby in the mix of people at the party. Gavin had said his long lost sister had turned up. Seeing as Tabby was the only one that Anya didn't immediately recognise (apart from the earlier meeting) and knew nothing about, she assumed it was her. Wait, what? Surely this was no mere coincidence? Once again she began to feel like something was wrong and yet no-one else seemed to echo her fear. Things seemed to be spiraling out of control with all the lone wolves turning up and now this as well. If they were still present by the time the full moon came, then who knew what would happen. Tabby didn't even know what she was. If she was still on Pack grounds when they all turned. Until Gavin opened his mouth and shared his thoughts with the rest of them she believed she was the only one with thoughts of this matter.

"Odd things are going on," She agreed, chewing her bottom lip hard. "Tabby's appearance here is not a coincidence, I'm sure of it. And all these lone wolves aren't safe either..." Her voice tailed off as she slipped back into her own thoughts. Surely Adrian was worried? No, he didn't seem worried and neither did Duncan. She looked up at him, meeting his eyes with a questioning look.

"So you have a sister?" Her question was for Gavin, but her eyes were still on Duncan. Quickly, she pulled them away to look between Gavin and Jac. Clearly Jac was still a bit unclear on the situation. And in truth so was Anya. Gavin had never mentioned a sister before, but then he didn't mention much about his life full stop. It didn't surprise Anya. She didn't ever talk about her parents or family either. Now, if they were to turn up things would be weird. She hated her parents with a passion and if she never laid eyes on them again it would be for the better. Looking back to Tabby, she frowned. She could relate to that feeling of not knowing who you truly were. Until she was fourteen she hadn't know what she was. Always different, but never sure why.

Snapping her attention back to the conversation, she waited for Gavin and Duncan to finish. "I'm assuming she didn't react well?"

“Obviously I'm missing some important things, so, can you please fill me in? aside from the wolves at the beach what else is going on?”

Gavin shook his head, "It's just a feeling I have. My sister's arrival and the fact that someone we don't know has been looking for her..." He didn't want to explain further in front of mixed company. "And then that thing with Calvin on the beach." Gavin gave her a meaningful look before turning back to Anya and Duncan.

"So you have a sister?"

"I do." Gavin answered simply. He knew it wasn't uncommon for the younger wolves who lived in the pack house to not talk about their families. And Gavin hadn't- for good reason, and he wasn't about to start now just because one of his relatives showed up. Not even Evon's unannounced arrival a few days ago managed to make him spill the wrath he felt towards his parents for what they did. And he would spare Tabs from that same agony as much as possible. No, it was his business, not theirs. And he wouldn't say anything further until he knew what Tabs knew.

"I'm assuming she didn't react well?"

Gavin tapped his fingers on the table and shifted uncomfortably. He blinked, then nodded. "Yeah. It's kind of a long story." Of course she hadn't reacted well, she thought he was dead, but Anya hadn't known that. More anger filled him as he wondered what other kind of lies their parents had filled Tabs' poor mind with.

He watched Kiyoshi and Ares from across the house and his concern for Jac came back. "Excuse me." Gavin said giving Jac's back a pat, leaving his plate at the table and walking over to Kiyoshi. Ares was stuttering about something that he didn't have the patience to decipher, but he still politely waited for the young boy to finish. He had no doubt that Ares had his reasons for being how he was, but Gavin wasn't really a man of patience, and Ares hadn't really earned his bluntness, so he just decided to grit his teeth and bear it and attempt to be as calm around the boy as possible.

But he wasn't there to talk about Ares. He had a more important concern.

"Kiyoshi?" Gavin started in a low voice. "Can you help Jac?" He didn't want to intrude, or say anything more in case Tabs was listening, but he supposed Kiyoshi would also be wanting to help Lyra... so he'd understand Gavin's concern. Also, everyone knew Kiyoshi was the personification of calm. Even being in the same room as him seemed to make Gavin's anger dissipate. He hoped Kiyoshi would help. Gavin wasn't sure how much he'd be able to do for Jac... He himself hadn't really gotten a lot of help through his shifts. Evon saved him during his first shift, sure, but after that it got rough. He didn't want that for Jac.

Gavin banished the memories from resurfacing.

Ducan was brought back to reality again as his phone vibrating rapidly, pulling his phone out he saw that it was his mother. Walking away from the crowd he received the call. " hello?" he spoke his voice wavering with worry. His mother spoke her voice tearful " Duncan can you come home sweetie? Your father getting weaker and he wants you to be with him, he did have something to eat earlier and managed to keep it down, but the headaches returned as well" his mothers voice was racked with tears, her nose sounding blocked and her breathing was heavy.

Duncan paced back and forth slowly his free hand rubbing his eyes his chest feeling tight from the worry. Giving a heavy sigh he spoke " I know mom I know...I'll be there in about five minutes...we just need to keep his temperature down and get him to drink more....all right ?" he explained waiting for a response from his mother who suppressed a sob and mumbled a soft agreement then put the phone down.

Duncan sighed and ran his hands through his hair, breathing out slowly he walked back into the room walking straight to Adrian he spoke quietly. " I have to get going...my...fathers very bad...in fact would you come round to my parents house tomorrow morning to see him...f he's still with us that is..." his voice trailed off slightly his gaze leaving Adrian's to look at the floor.

Anya felt Duncan's presence behind her move. Turning from the conversation, she frowned searching for him among the others. He was a little way from her, outside the room, on his phone and from the look on his face it wasn't good news. She had known that his father was in a bad way and had been for awhile, but clearly this was serious news. Excusing herself from the group, she lingered close by waiting for his phonecall to end. Even when it did, he brushed past her and went straight towards Adrian. Without trying to eavesdrop, she held back playing with strands of her hair. She'd never seen Duncan look like that and it felt like a stab at her heart. To see him look so upset was painful for her to look at.

Quickly she sidled up to him, looking up into his eyes. "I can come with you if you would like," She whispered, turning her gaze Adrian. If he had anything to say about it then he would soon put a stop to it. But then Duncan may not have wanted her to go with him. It was a sensitive situation. "I mean I understand if you don't want me to. I wouldn't be in the way. I might be able to help support your mother." She gave him a soft look, chewing her bottom lip gently. "I worry about you." It was not intended for Adrian's ears, only Duncan's. It was true. Recently whenever he disappeared for a time she worried that something had happened to him. And now she was worried that the loss of his father would be too much for him.

And what of his mate? How would she live without her other half? Anya had heard that it was painful for one to live on without the other, but she was yet to experience that tie to someone else.

Adrian had been doing the rounds quite thoroughly most of the night, talking to the older wolves and giving the younger ones their space. He'd also made a bit of a mission of picking the last few morsels off each tray before they were 'consolidated' onto a single tray by Tai in her efforts to clear up. It had been a good night of catching up with old friends, and his mind hadn't really been on the matters of late, although he had noticed that girl Tabitha. However, she seemed to be being taken care of by the other pups, so he kept his distance. He wasn't part of the young crowd anymore, and as much as he'd like to think the title of alpha meant that he was someone people would like to meet, he knew that wasn't always the case with young wolves.

He caught sight of Duncan coming towards him and instantly recognised the grave look on his friend's face. Given what had been spoken of earlier, he had an instant sinking feeling as to what it might be about.

"OK buddy." he said with a solemn nod, "Tell me what you want me to do. I can give you a ride into town now, that's no problem. Shall I come in to see him, or would you prefer if I just left you and came in the morning?"

He didn't want to ask the question 'how bad is it' because that was something Duncan probably didn't even know. But Duncan's father had been a young man under Adrian's father back in the day, and if he wasn't going to make the night he'd feel bad not to pay his last respects in person.

Duncan thought for a brief moment, his father would appreciate the company especially in his time of need. Giving a soft smile he composed himself enough to speak although his eyes seemed unfocoused and mainly looking out the window as if he was ready to jump out of it and run home" Gray would really appreciate you two coming, he is always so appreciative of company. Thank you "

He hated the idea of him potentially losing his father tonight or even in the next few days, he was the first one to teach him how to fight and defend himself as well as other important life lessons as a wolf, including training him to be a Beta to follow in footsteps so to speak. It was certainly going to be hard.

Duncan looked to Anya as she spoke her last comment filling his heart, he gave a smile to her.

"Sure thing." Adrian said forthrightly, "Tai will probably have to stay here and hold the fort, I'll just go and let her know what we're doing, I'll meet you out the front."

He quickly turned and strode through to towards the kitchen, where he'd last seen his mate heading. He didn't feel any qualms about leaving Duncan for a moment; the man was strong and didn't need to be handled with kid gloves. At the same time, much like Adrian himself, Duncan had a very strong relationship with his father. The thought gave him pause on the way...what would it be like when Cid Khöller's time came to pass? He felt a pang of guilt...it had been too long since they'd had the old man up to the pack house to visit. Cid had been a well loved alpha, and it wasn't an exhaggeration to say that a lot of people in the pack owed him their lives for what he did almost twenty years ago. Adrian felt a slight lump forming in his throat. Duncan was making the most of what could be the last days or even hours with his own father. Adrian should seek to do the same, no matter how long was left.

"Tai sweetheart," he spoke into the kitchen, "I'm going down to town with Duncan. It's his father. It doesn't sound good."

Tai looked around with genuine concern, and nodded. "Of course. Definitely you should go with him. Oh gosh, take your time, don't hurry back. I'll get things cleared up here. And stay in touch OK?"

"Naturally." Adrian said, giving her a soft kiss before going out into the hall, grabbing his jacket and stepping out the front door, where the SUV was parked not far away.

Tabby laughed at Kathy's remark, though it seemed to her like most of the teens in the room were girls so she hoped that the uncivility of mealtimes was a relative thing! She also turned to Dante, starting to feel a lot more relaxed and quite enjoying being made a bit of a fuss of (though she hoped it was not at the expense of Reina for it being her birthday!).

"Hi, Dante? Cool name!" she exclaimed.

"I know Rory..."

Tabby recognised Gavin's voice and glanced down at the floor to prevent anyone from seeing her face falling. She wasn't sure whether she was glad or not that he'd come back now...it sure would have been a long wait to hear him out in the morning, but a part of her had been glad to be lost in the celebrations and escape into them to delay the coming explanation. And it didn't help that he was confessing to know that strange kid...hopefully he would either turn out not to be Rory's friend as such, or else he would be able to point out some significant redeeming features the self-professed 'werewolf' might have.

It was probably for the best that Lyra agreed to relinquish Tabby, before leaning in to whisper something discreet to Gavin. Tabby wasn't actually that curious about what it might be. She only felt like she had it in her to allow Gavin to give one explanation; whether Gavin allowed other people to influence what he told her was up to him. She'd listen, and judge him by what he said.

"Great to meet you all," she addressed everyone standing nearby, then looked at Lyra, "my uncle Lance said he'd drop some of my things off at some stage...if the offer of staying over is still good that is. I think he's going to grab a room in one of the pubs himself."

Slowly she turned to Gavin and made a concerted effort to look him in the eye. Once again, it was beyond denying that he was who he claimed to be. All the distinctive features of his face were present, just in an older package. Her lips thinned and she swallowed hard.

"OK." she said blankly, "Where shall we go?"

Ducan walked out of the house not long after Adraian he climbed into the front seat of the SUV. He didn't bother pulling the seatbelt over his chest. Even though Ducan was safety conscious his house was only down the further end of town not that far from Cid's house in fact it was also close to a small lake where you could fish in the summer. Duncan's father loved to fish he would spend hours on the lake on his own with his thoughts. He did try to get Duncan into fishing when he was younger but Duncan was more interested in running mainly along with sports and sparring. He did spend time with his parents and did visit once a week for dinner otherwise he would hear never ending moaning from his mother worried about his eating habits.

In the car Duncan sighed and began rubbing his hands nervously, he then rubbed his jaw feeling the soft stubble breaking through his eyes looking at the floor.

Anya silently nodded in response to Duncan's words. In fact she was silent for the remaining time within the house. It was a tense time for Duncan and she knew that he was fairly close to his father. His passing would probably hit him hard and she intended to help him along. As they left to meet Adrian around the front, she kept one step behind, not entirely sure what words should leave her mouth in comfort. So instead she kept quiet, tucking strands of blonde hair behind her ears and bowing her head as she tugged her jacket on once again. Anya had no family to speak of so this feeling was alien to her. In her eyes her family were completely and utterly dead to her. She had no intention of ever seeing them again and in that moment she was glad for it, because of the pain such relationships caused.

Jumping up into the back seat, she clipped her seat belt over her shoulder. Without a word she lent forwards, placing a hand on the back of Duncan's shoulder and squeezed gently. Her fingertips brushed his neck as she offered her comfort to him. She had so much to say to him and yet the words would pass her lips. If Adrian had not been present then they may have come more freely, but unfortunately they did not. Her heart was already sinking just from Duncan's own worry and sadness. She wanted nothing more than to hold him until all of the pain had disappeared. If she could give anything in the world to heal his pain then she would have, even her own life. In that second she realised that she would do anything for this man and all because he had stopped and listened to her once in a while, all because he had offered a smile. Leaving her hand where it was, she rested her forehead on the seat in front. Fear began to claw at her heart. Her breath caught in her throat.

"Not here and not now," She thought desperately to herself, biting her bottom lip hard. "You just being stupid Anya. Stop thinking of that, it is not important." But it was. Because a crushing realisation had just hit her square in the chest.

Adrian glanced back at Anya, surprised that she had joined them but it wasn't time to ask for reasons. If she was there then she obviously knew where they were going and why, and as long as Duncan was fine with it then it wasn't a problem. Without a word he started up the car and made the short journey down to the outskirts of town, not so far from where his own parents lived. He pulled up outside the house Duncan's parents lived in, noting that a couple of lights were on and parked up.

He stepped out of the car and took a deep breath, stepping into the yard and waiting for Duncan to go past him. He lokoed back at the beta and offered and encouraging smile, not quite sure what that was meant to accomplish.

"After you buddy."

Tai almost chuckled at how quickly Reina returned to even keel in her mood, and extended her arm to give her a hug.

"No problem sweety." she said, pulling the small girl in affectionately, hoping that for once she could do so without fear of falling foul of some hilarity. "Glad you enjoyed it. Don't worry about it. You'd best get back out there, people will probably want to say bye on their way out, and I need to start preparing a room for Tabitha. You know if she's still with Lyra and Kathy?"

Tabby froze, stunned by what she was hearing. The impulse to turn and run was almost overwhelming. When Rory had tried to convince her that he was a werewolf, it had been kinda quaint and harmlessly funny, and it had been easy enough to just pass it off as a little fantasy hobby thing he and a bunch of other people did. But this was different. Gaving - her own brother - was not only saying that both he and she were werewolves, but using it as the reason he disappeared and left her believing he was dead for almost ten years. The fact that he would do that left her in no doubt that this was't a game. Gavin believed what he was saying.

She took a deep breath, trying to contain the emotion but hardly able to suppress the incredulity.

"So you're telling me," he said slowly, "that dad took you out into the woods to turn into a wolf? And then just ditched you and disappeared into the night? Because he didn't come home to us either."

She tried her best to rationalise it. Something must have happened that night that traumatised Gavin beyond comprehension. She struggled to piece together a scenario that could make sense of it. Like perhaps wolves had attacked, but maybe these other people had rescued Gavin before he was hurt, but the sight and sound of the wolves had left him with this delusion about being a werewolf. But then, why had his 'foster parents' not attempted to find his real home, or allowed him to continue believe this nonsense?

"Is this like Rory?" she asked quietly, "Gavin I don't believe in werewolves. I'm actually scared of wolves, I had nightmares about them for years after you and dad went missing."

Suddenly she began to shake and her gaze turned back to the house. Oh god...was this place some sort of weird cult or something? Is that why Gavin had harboured this belief?

"Do..." she hesitated, "...the others here believe in werewolves?"

Duncan hardly noticed Anya's hand on his shoulders, but he really did appreciate it, steeping out of the car he walked past Adrian he walked up the steps. His legs feeling like they were made of stone, each step in the gravel like thousands of shards of glass and metal breaking his toes. Pushing open the door Duncan was almost knocked over by his tearful mother who buried her face in his shoulder. " oh Duncan..I thought you werent going to get here on time.." Duncan rubbed his mothers back comfortingly " I know mom...I know" Duncan mumbled softly into her ear. " I brought Adrian over...and Anya you've met her on occasion...come on Ade" Duncan said releasing his mother and going up the stairs.

Although the door was open Duncan still knocked on the door, " hey dad" he mumbled walking to his fathers side taking his hand and crouching next to him. His father was pale in contrast to his normal tanned skin colour, a cold and clammy sweat was pouring down his face. He breathed roughly and spoke. " Duncan...I'm so proud....of what you've done..." he paused to cough roughly his free hand slowly reaching to trace Duncans face. Duncan face was streaming with tears he squeezed his fathers hand " I learnt from the best dad" he smiled softly his father tried to smile but his weak form didn't allow it. " your going to make a lovely lady....so happy...it's just a shame...I won't be able to see it....teach your kids to fish Dunc..." he paused to gasp and cough each breath beccoming weaker. " perhaps they'll be...better than you at...reeling them in" he commented giving a soft chuckle that was similar to Duncan's. Duncan's mother joined his side and held onto his shoulder brushing Grays hair from his face. " how did I get with...someone so beautiful?" he asked looking at Ava's eyes his kids slowly beginning to close. Ava gave a soft smile and replied " the fate of the moon" she replied kissing Gray's cold head he smiled and replied " and all her splendour" he replied weakly his eyes closing and his final breath drawing out.

Duncan gasped lightly and pressed his fathers limp hand to his face kissing it tenderly, he sobbed heavily but hardly made a sound. His mother mumbled a light prayer, whilst wiping the sweat from Grays face tears rolling down her cheeks.

Tabby was quite literally lost for words. Gavin's percieved impatience did nothing to ease her anxiety...but his declaration that he was about to 'shift' actually did. Her breath caught in her throat. This was above and beyond anything Rory had done earlier that day...he'd only claimed to be able to 'dream shift', but Gavin seemed to be suggesting something more literal. Which was impossible, of course, and Tabby was confident that he was about to prove her right and make an idiot of himself. Which gave her no comfort whatsoever, but it transformed her fright into something more like...pity?

She watched closely as he opened the door to summon 'Jac', and shifted her weight onto one leg as he then did a volte face and decided he was going to spare her the experience for tonight. How convenient. Nevertheless he said everything will an apparent conviction...but there was one thing in particular about his words that piqued his interest. She glanced at Jac when she appeared, equally intrigued to know what her reaction would be to all this, but there remained a latent expectation that she too was probably in on this delusional little game.

"Rogues?" she said, "What are they, like...the baddie werewolves?"

"Not bad, just misunderstood." a gruff voice came from a little further down the path. Calvin was walking towards the three of them at a leisurely pace, his eyes still hazy from alcohol and moving with a haughty swagger. Tabby looked back, hoping at first that it would be Lance, but not recognising the boy who looked around about Gavin's age. Another denizen of the wolfie den no doubt...

Calvin squinted at Tabby, regarding her highly perturbed state, then leered at Gavin. "Well buddy," he slurred, "I see finding your mate hasn't stopped you from rubbing folk up the wrong way. Is the party still going on?"

Adrian remained in the doorway as Duncan shared his father's final moments. A selfish part of his would have liked to take one of those moments for himself, to speak to his old friend one last time. But the scene that unfolded before him made one thing clear; Gray had been clinging on to see his son. No doubt nature would have had him put to rest hours ago, but it was just like Gray - a fighter to the very last - to stave off the inevitable in order to speak to his son before the end.

Gray's passing seemed immediately to mark a landmark in Adrian's own life. Gray had been to Cid something rather like Duncan was to Adrian. Gray had stepped in late in life as Beta - replacing Garrett after his murder at the hands of rogues - and now his time in the world had ended. Adrian felt distinctly old.

He remained behind a few minutes longer, before stepping forward and placing a hand on Ava's shoulder. He felt thoroughly unqualified to preside over the scene...after all Ava knew Adrian when he was a small boy. Nevertheless, the words which seemed so trite at any other time felt the exact right thing to say now.

"As true to his wolf in death as in life, he has found unity with himself, and fellowship in the ancestor pack. Do not contain your grief, for in it's wake comes pride at a life fulfilled."

He allowed another minute or so of silence, then kneeled down behind Ava, struggling to contain the lump that was forming in his own throat.

"Would you like me to call my parents?" he whispered, "I'm sure they would be happy to come and give you company tonight, or have you stay with them. Whatever you choose to do, you shouldn't stay alone."

He looked across at Duncan, and added, "Whatever you want to do, my friend, I'll make it possible. Stay here, or stay with us. I'll take care of all the arrangements."

Tai tilted her head with curiosity. Tabby had gone off to speak with Gavin? Why him specifically? She wasn't worried about it particularly...until it dawned on her that she hadn't had the chance to prep Gavin about Tabby not knowing about her true nature. But surely someone else would have given him the heads up. And Reina had seemed to be under the impression that nobody was going to tell Tabby the truth, so that would presumably include Gavin...right?

She felt a distinct unease at the situation. She was also aware of the sounds of people starting to leave the house, and that Lyra and everyone else might be settling down for the night quite soon. She didn't want her daughter to feel like she had been ignoring the latest development in her life, and was wondering whether to wander off and find her, when Kiyoshi and Ares came into the kitchen, followed not long after by Lyra. Tai was putting something away in the corner, and Lyra must not have seen her...but Tai certainly did hear her refer to 'my boys'. She smirked to herself deeply, then turned around to see what it was Kiyoshi and Ares had made.

"Oh I think I saw it earlier," she beamed, moving in to stand close to the three of them, and briefly catching Lyra's eye with a knowing twinkle.
