The Great Dragon

"All the Marked are my children..... Though some children are better forgotten."

0 · 188 views · located in Hainius

a character in “Marked: For Better or for Worse”, as played by SupposedlyAnonymous

Description

A huge King's Lizard, The Great Dragon is at least 65 feet long, with a long, thin tail and powerful wings. He is built lithely, with a long neck and slender, long legs, though this litheness, which could easily translate into awkward or gangly, is gracefully managed and adds to the overall majestic appearance. His entire body is covered with small, glimmering scales of a bright copper color, small enough compared to his body size to make it appear as if he was crafted out of a single piece of hammered metal.

His head is powerful, rather elongated, but not as much so as most of his breed, and set gracefully on the long neck. Two spiraling, ivory horns curl from either side of this slender head, each reaching at least four feet in length. His eyes are rounded, and a glowing golden color, a slit shaped pupil running across the center of each. His maw is wide, and lined with two rows of sharp, white teeth.

Personality

Authoritative, wise, and quiet all describe this dragon quite well. He is vigilant in his duty, which is the caring for and protecting of the marked, and is much experienced. His age is impossible to guess; if you were to ask, he would simply give a throaty chuckle and reply 'old enough.' He is known to all but starve himself when the Marked eggs are awaiting their bondeds, not wanting to leave the fragile things alone for a second.

However, his position has seen many failures as well as successes among the Marked. As much as he might try to give them words of advice and guide them on their way, some of the dragons and their bondeds have become infatuated with the idea of power; after realizing how much they could do with a small group of Marked and their dragons, it is not surprising that some tried to overthrow and take over cities. He has even had one pair attempt to murder the royalty of Argomene (though it could be argued that that twolegs was downright insane and probably would have tried to do that even if he hadn't become a Marked). For this reason, The Great Dragon seems to have a melancholy air about him at times.

So begins...

The Great Dragon lay curled about the eggs, his body forming a circle around them and his wings folded over them. From his closed eyes and heavy breathing one could tell that the massive creature was sleeping, though every sense was, in reality, almost as alert as they would be were he awake.

Suddenly, the beast's eyes flew open, and he jerked his head up as if someone had prodded him awake. They were coming. They were coming now. He could feel it, a thrumming sense of nowness in the back of his mind and all through his body.

Pulling himself to his feet, he stretched his wide wingspan of over 60 feet, still not touching the walls of the huge room he slept in, and glanced around, slit shaped pupils flickering from one area of the cave to another. The rooms were prepared; he had felt a tiny urging a few days ago that told him it would be soon. Not so soon as this, no, but soon. Curving his neck to glance back at the nest of eggs, he gave a slow, dragonish smile. The eggs were ready; they were always ready.

Now all there was left to do was wait.... And with that thought, he moved to the entrance of his home and crouched in a comfortable sitting position. The Two-legs would be here any hour, and he would be ready for them.

Appearing almost like a gargantuan, finely made statue crafted from hammered copper, the only thing that marked the Great Dragon as a living creature was the breathing, which was visible if one looked closely, and the great, glimmering, golden eyes which took in everything. After a moment of regarding this first Marked, who had arrived in such an odd fashion, the reptile spoke.

"Greetings, Marked one. I am pleased to see you arrived safely, and trust the journey was not unpleasant." He gave a brief, polite nod, the tip of his tail twitching ever so slightly.

~~~~
Ryuu halted and froze in place upon hearing a loud rustle of leaves, head swiveling back and forth and nose in the air. His senses just weren't good enough in this form..... He could maybe... Yes. The sweetly familiar scent of a human being. It was almost comforting. He had grown up in human cities, after all.
He moved quickly ahead and trying not to let his footsteps be heard by the human he was approaching. After all, it wouldn't be any good to startle them or, if they turned out to be an enemy, alert them to his presence. Peering through a cover of bushes, the red haired child considered what he saw. Human with a map.... Didn't seem to be carrying weapons... Might have some food?
With the hope of food in mind, the boy stepped out into the clear, a grin on his puckish, freckled face. "Hello!"
Giving little sound but a quiet whirr, the circle of spinning water descended to the earth directly in front of the mouth of the cave. As it touched down, the water spiraled upward, forming a double-helix around Aquaea as it swiftly uncoiled itself, and then vanished into the air, reverting to its original form as vapor, fading off into shimmering light. The young hero brushed some of her two toned hair back from her eyes, and, looking up into the cave from where she had softly landed. She raised an eyebrow in mild surprise to find a titanic dragon sizing her up where it stood, wings spread wide as though about to take flight. Its tail flicked back and forth as it spoke, giving Aquaea a somewhat amusing thought. It looked just like a curious cat, scaled up to the size of a small mansion and given wings.
"Greetings, Marked one. I am pleased to see you arrived safely, and trust the journey was not unpleasant." Judging by its voice, the dragon was male.
"Indeed," Aquaea said coolly, giving a curt nod in imitation of the dragon's own gesture. Although it was probably just superstition, she had heard once that, when speaking with a dragon, one was always to allow them the first greeting, then to return it in kind. It might have been simple nonsense, but she decided that it would be best to follow this advice, just in case. She would rather not have been burnt to ashes the moment the eggs hatched and she was no longer useful.
"If it would please you, my name is Aquaea. Given how many Marked will be arriving today, perhaps it would be best to distinguish us all? It might become confusing if you referred to all of us as 'Marked One,' no?" She added in a somewhat jovial, albeit tentative tone, like a jester telling an amusing joke to his liege. She had done her research well, and had also found accounts of dragons being amused and impressed by backbone and wit. She had no doubts that a normal person would have taken up an attitude of humility and supplication so as not to be instantly slain once their usefulness was outlived, and she did not doubt that this great dragon had dealt with enough people in his years to know the same. Therefore, maintaining her dignity and sharp intellect whilst not coming off as offensive was crucial. If she had calculated her words correctly, then she would be set apart from normal people. And, if she had not, then it would be an instrument by which to weigh her words, therefore becoming profitable in the long run.
She smiled slightly, her expression showing that she meant no offense by her joke, thereby hopefully ensuring her from that misconception. At worst, she might come off as having poor taste, which she rather doubted a dragon would care much about in the first place.
"Hm. Seems I'm the first one here. Shall I come in?" She said nonchalantly, glancing around. She did not want to come off as too bold by simply strolling into the dragon's home, but she also did not want to seem like a sniveling supplicant, crawling her way to the dragon's doorstep. Again, a careful balance was needed. She did not yet know much about dragons, no matter how much research she had done, meaning that she would need to take things a step at a time. While this was rather irritating, it was necessary, and therefore, she would do it.
If it would please you, my name is Aquaea. Given how many Marked will be arriving today, perhaps it would be best to distinguish us all? It might become confusing if you referred to all of us as 'Marked One,' no? The Great Dragon chuckled a bit, his eyes half closing in a lazily amused expression. He found the boldness of this two-legs entertaining.
It was always interesting to see how the children all reacted differently to their first meeting with a dragon. While some took a bold stance such as this, others were terrified and had to coaxed forward, while still others tried to ignore the fact that he was a dragon all together. The last attitude rarely proved effective; it was incredibly difficult to pretend it did not matter that your guardian was as large as a goodsized house. But they all got used to it... Eventually, anyway.
“Hm. Seems I'm the first one here. Shall I come in?” At this request, the Great Dragons tail flicked up and came back down in front of the entrance, thumping the ground. It was an instinctual gesture more than anything else, and after a moment, he brought it back to curl around his legs, probably having made his message clear.
“I... Would rather you wait until I could ac-” He started, but was interrupted by a shrill whistle from inside the cave. A smile crossed his features. Little Eight-legs was impatient.... Probably all of them were; after all, some had waited years for this day. Eight-legs was just more vocal than most of the other children; he was a Serpent, and Serpents were known for their noise almost as much as their cleverness.
Najade thrilled again, trying hard to view his guardian and the two-legs from inside the egg, which, with the shell like green glass, did allow him to see shadows and movements outside his little globe. Wiggling his legs with excitement, the baby serpent moved himself in a circle and began talking to himself in a gurgling, babyish voice. Practicing words, so he could talk to the two-legs. Words and words and more words... Some he knew the meaning of, others he did not. But he would learn. His two-legs would teach him.
Freezing for a moment at the second whistle, then closing his eyes as he focused, The Great Dragon listened to the scratching and rustling and growls that came from the eggs. They knew it was time. Eyes snapping open, he looked back at Aquaea. “You may go.” No use making the children wait any longer.
Aquaea noted the rapid descent of the tail, and thanked her prior research she hadn't been fool enough to try to walk in before getting a response. Doubtless, she'd have been crushed flat. Fortunately, she was no fool, and had been expecting some sort of demonstrative movement - Dragons were renowned for their sometimes terrifying body-language, after all.
"Well if you'd rather not have me enter, it's not a big deal," Aquaea said, wandering over to a small rock outcropping just inside the mouth of the cave. A faint blue light emerged in front of her feet, forming a sort of step upon which she climbed up on top of the rock. Seating herself, she crossed her legs, hanging them off the edge of the rock as she smiled slightly, the water which she had assimilated fading just as quickly as it had appeared. "I mean, I'd be more worried about what you thought than what those hatchlings thought, now wouldn't I?" She calculated this comment to judge the dragon's reaction yet again. In case she had been a touch too bold before, she retained her previous nonchalance and informality while making a more humble insinuation. While it still showed that she intended to treat the dragon on a more cordial level than that of a worshipful miscreant and her god-beast, it also implied that she made no pretending she was the dragon's equal in strength. Instead, the implication was much deeper and more sophisticated than that. Her words were truly a request to test their comparative stature on an intellectual basis, rather than a physical one. Although the dragon doubtless had centuries of knowledge at his disposal, Aquaea was asking to test herself against him, to see how she sized up. In short, she was actually revealing that she was gauging how to treat him - while not actually outright saying it.
The Great Dragon stood to the side as the Angel with the broken wing stumbled in. Aquaea was handling it.... There was no reason for him to get involved. Besides, his large claws were useless when it came to most medical procedures. However, despite making no move to help, anger brewed in his golden eyes. Protecting the children was his job, and already one had been harmed. But then again, he could not very well search out whoever had shot the arrow. It had happened; he could do nothing about it now. The sharp anger faded, and he gave an inward sigh.
Stepping forward to greet the newest Marked, the Great Dragon lowered his head so his eye was almost on level with the Angel, speaking in a quiet, concerned tone. At least, it was quiet for him, though honestly it was rather loud. "I am sorry for your trouble, Marked One." Then, raising his head again, he eyed the group in whole with a smile. "Now, please come see the eggs. They have been waiting to meet you all."
Larissa took a couple steps back as the great dragon approached them. She was rather small in general, not quiet even 5 feet tall, and the dragon's large size scared her a little bit. But he seemed to mean no harm, so she relaxed a little. Her clear blue eyes looked over him curiously, as a small smile found it's way to her lips. It's was a rather interesting sight, this menacing dragon lowaring it's head and speaking to an injured angel so gently.
When he said that they could see they eggs, she kneeled down to the egg that was closest to them. "Hello." she said gently, her voice taking on a soothing tone. She moved her hand towards the egg, her fingertips just barely caressing the shell. "Can they hear or see anything in there?" she asked the great dragon, with a little smile.
"They can hear quite well from in the egg, and some of them can see you through the shell a little.... Though others can only listen to what is outside." The Great Dragon eyed the eggs fondly, eyelids drooping as he thought about the little lives inside... Ah, what a wide world they would have to face when they hatched, though they would have help facing it.
As Damien spoke, the copper scaled creature turned his head towards the Werewolf. "They will hatch when all the Marked have arrived. And one will choose each of you." Unless something went horribly wrong.... He chased this thought from his mind with a loud growl, directed towards himself. Such thoughts were not to be thought during such a happy time. A noise from outside the cave caught his attention. Singing?
Moving gracefully despite his great bulk, the dragon walked to the entrance of his cave and looked bemusedly at the two newest arrivals. "Greetings, Marked ones. Please, come in and see the eggs."
Najade, seeing the two-legs draw closer, gave another shrill whistle. Though they appeared as mere sketchy figures through his thick, glass like egg shell, the sight was exhilarating. Soon he would hatch, and meet his partner. Ah, this was exciting. He chirped cheerfully to himself a few times, then began to practice talking again in a gurgling voice.
Kyren shook his head again. "Whoah- uhm, I don't know. We-" A large voice came from inside the cave. It greeted them, and Kyren knew it immediately as a dragon. It was a copper-like color, large and magnificent. "Thank-you." He said, greeting the dragon with a small smile. A bubble of excitement swarmed inside him. He was about to meet his match. His dragon. His bonded. Kyren's crimson hair took on a darker shade as he began to walk forward, inside the cave. It was brighter than he'd imagined, and instantly his eyes adjusted. "What a cozy place." He said, trying to be nice. I should be polite, this is one in a million times that I'll be thanking my parents for their shining examples of politeness. he thought awkwardly, scratching the back of his head. He'd just noticed that his mind was blank after he'd complained about his headache. "Hey!" He yelled, whipping around to glare at Zurafina. "You used me! Munipulated me! Tricked me! Hypnotized me! How dare you?!" The words spewed out of his mouth in hot rage, and he crossed his arms, furrowing his brow and shaking his head in displeasure.
Zurafina curtseyed lowly to the Great Dragon and said "Well met." She didn't bother stating her name, and instead entered the large cave confidently. Suddenly the Half-Blood turned on her and yelled. He was not very happy at what she had done, but was there anything really wrong with her actions? He had tried the same thing on her, and the only difference was that she had not failed. Not knowing how to respond to his heated anger, she just stared at him blankly for a few seconds. "Let's not dwell on past actions." She ended up saying softly, batting her eyes and pouring a little sweetness and allure into her voice. Hopefully that would calm him down.
She then returned her attention to the cave, taking in all that was around her. There were eight eggs, but not six other figures. There was a tall, black haired man near the eggs, and close by him was a pretty girl with white hair. An angel boy stood not too far away, one of his wings was wrapped and looked off. The last person present was a girl about her own age, with unique hair that was coloured both black and white. This was certainly something. She had never been around this many species at once. In fact, she had never met a dragon, werewolf, or an angel before. She inspected each person carefully, taking in what information she viewed as valuable and stored it away.
Now that she was here she was impatient, even though she knew she shouldn't be. Who knows how long the other's had waited? She suddenly wished for the last two to arrive, and then everything could get started. The dragons. She tentatively walked up to the eggs, keeping a little distance between her and the man with the black hair and the girl with the white hair. Her eyes scanned over each egg and she felt her curiosity grow. Which one would choose her? She couldn't help but let out a gentle "Hello." To all the eggs assembled, her blood pumping, knowing they could hear her, and also hearing them as they moved about.
"Of course I was right." Ryuu chirped, grabbing her hand and pulling her towards the cave with childish impatience. "C'mon, I bet they're waiting for us. There's a Siren and a Werewolf and a big dragon. Or lotsa little dragons.... Anyway, it smells dragonish and-" He stopped talking when he saw the Great Dragon, wide eyes growing wider with awe.
When he finally found his tongue again, the words came out in a sort of half squeak. "Um.... Guess it's just one big dragon? Hi, Mr. Dragon, sir....." Was that how you addressed a dragon? Probably not, but he hoped the big reptile wasn't hungry at the moment. It did have a whole forest full of animals... Why would he eat a chewy little werepup?
The Great Dragon smiled, clearly excited, and gave the two newcomers a welcoming nod before addressing the group as a whole. "The last Marked have arrived. It is time for the hatching!" Ryuu blinked at this, then smiled. If nothing else, this hatching would be fun to watch.
As if a mental switch had been flipped, Najade stopped his burbling and noise making. He knew. It was time to hatch, time to find his bonded, it was time. It was time! Time to meet the world. Time to go from egg to dragon. He had been waiting so long.... Smashing his body against the inside of the egg, he created a long crack in the shell, then prepared to repeat the process and break free of his glasslike world.
The muted voice of the Great Dragon came through the eggshell. "The last Marked have arrived. It is time for the hatching!" Nuraki squirmed inside the egg, trying to find a weak spot in the shell. Eventually she gave up at that and simply began butting part of the egg with her head. I will choose my Bonded! I will be free from this egg! She was ready to face her destiny as a dragon, not some egg bound weakling.
There! A crack! Nuraki shoved her head through the opening. It was bright out! Light flooded into her eyes, blinding her momentarily. Snorting egg gloop out of her nostrils, she worked on enlargening the hole.
Nuraki wriggled out of the opening in the egg. She licked the last of the egg liquid off of her before looking around. So that's what a two leg looks like, she thought as she set her eyes on a biped creature nearby. It was huge! The two leg had fur on the top of its head and was partly encased by an odd membrane. What is that for? Are they not totally free from their eggs yet?
Her gaze fell on the Great Dragon. His size put that of the two legs to shame. He had to be over a 300 times her body length! She chirped to let everyone know she was out of the egg.
Which two leg would be hers? It was exciting, much more so than it ever had been in the egg. None of her dreams had been as magnificent as the world around her. She fanned her wings to dry them out and hopped down off the rock her egg was on. She walked over to one of the two legs, keeping her head held high and taking in as much as she could. The two leg she approached had silver head fur and looked happy. Sitting in front of the two leg Nuraki asked, "What your name, pretty head fur? What you think?"
'Well, your the boss Great Dragon...' Grandine thought as he heard the Great Dragon telling them to hatch. Grandine started to tap on the front part of the shell that was concilling him from the world. "Tap, Tap, Tap... Crack!!" the egg responded. He started to tugg himself out threw the small crack in the shell. There, he could see it. The light he had only seen threw his shell muffled and distorted was showing off it's full radiedence infront of him. 'There we go...' he thought.
After a few more tuggs and taps, he finally got out of his shell fully and stared around, observing his surounding. The first thing he could see was the Great Dragon, who had been garding them for the last few weeks know. Like he sounded, he was huge. As he looked around, he could see that he was the biggest hatchling of them all but the Great Dragon was still about 25 to 30 times bigger then he was.
Then, he could see the twolegs surrounding the eggs looking with curious eyes at the dragon eggs. 'Oh well, they all looks dumb so let's get this over with.' he thought. In his opinion, they were just 7 two legs who came to take his 7 brothers. So, as a result, he didn't have a very good prejudice fot the two legs. With that, he hopped down from his rock where his egg had laied.
He started to observe the two legs. The two legs with longer fur on their heads looked a little better if not but they all looked weak. They looked like trouble when in battle and he had to save them because she was his "Partner". The males, in his opinion wasn't all that good either. One of them looked a little crazy with his orange hair and short, little figure that almost came close to his hight. (Grandine is about 3ft from bearth.) The otherone... well, ... looked like a good meal then a partner with his wings behind him. Then, he found a aproving figure. A guy about twice his hight with healthy brown skin and not too much fur on his head looked the best shot he seemed to have. He was pretty strong built, (even with Grandine's few minutes of experience) and he had a fresh greenish (Wow, how did I know that??) smell like the cold fresh forest air. "What is your name, two leged? And what is your race?" he asked standing infront of him.
Upon being lead into the Great Dragon's Cave by Aquaea, Faquel's mind blurred after meeting the massive creature himself. Indeed, the encounter had caused him to retreat behind his "hero" merely out of shyness, but the blending of hellos and new faces kept his mind off the dull pain in his injured wing. Faquel was about to make his way to somewhere less crowded when the Great Dragon announced that all the marked had gathered and it was time to watch them hatch!
The moment of truth. I finally meet the reason why I have this mark on my face. I wonder which one is mine? What kind of dragon will it be? Is it a girl? A boy? Gah, I'd wish they'd just hatch! Question after question amassed in Faquel's mind as he, along with the others, watched the eggs intently.
Inanna listened carefully, concentrated on the muffled voices. Her claws clicked over the shell quietly. The voices murmured softly then rose in crescendo as she sensed there approach into the cave. She shifted around to press her ear to the weak spot int he shell. She had found this spot many times before to hear the outside world. The little dragon tuned in, "Um.... Guess it's just one big dragon? Hi, Mr. Dragon, sir....." The boyish voice chimed. It was preceded by the rumbling voice of the greater dragon. "The last Marked have arrived. It is time for the hatching!"
The hatchling let out a small chirp of excitement. The time had come for her to meet the bonded. How long had she waited for this moment? Years, days? The time spent waiting felt endless but after so long it felt good to finally be getting her wish settled. Inanna pressed her nose to the soft part of the shell and carefully pushed hard enough to get some leverage. Her back legs pushed against the other side of the shell increasing the force. Crack! The eggshell split and she fell through with a light thump.
Inanna rested on the ground taking in the bright lights and blurry figures. She frowned and growled moving a dewy, scaly paw over her eyes. The sunlight that filtered into the cave burned but she figured it would become tolerable with time. She steadily got her feet under her body and blinked away the blur. The twelve figures startled her but she proudly raised her head and looked to the great dragon. "Hello." She mumbled, getting used to the feel of language. The hatchling turned to peer at the other hatchlings curiously, in a hurry to see her bonded but yet also trying to save face and stay elegant. Inanna, getting enough of seeing the other hatchlings get together with their bonded, stepped towards the two-legged female.
She was even more beautiful now that Inanna could match a voice to a face. The woman with confidence. It could only be her. She side-stepped the other twolegs and stopped in front of the female. Seeing her now, the two-toned hair and gorgeous blue eyes Inanna felt that the decision was right. She could see that they were almost similar. "You." Her voice scratched, lowly pitched. Inanna swallowed trying to get her voice to cooperate. She peered over at the other twolegs, scanning to make sure her gut feeling was completely correct before squaring off against the woman. "Yes, I want you. Tell me a name and what are you?" She sat back on her haunches and curled her tail around her legs, mimicking the greater dragon.
Songrose blinked as she was pulled into the cave by the werewolf, and was startled when she saw the dragon. She watched the werewolf greet the large dragon, but found herself unable to say anything, to greet the dragon herself. There was far too much she could say that might be impolite, or maybe she'd be considered to have said too much, or something. Instead, she only nodded to him, quickly pulling her hand away from the werewolf. She barely had any sort of contact with her parents, physical or otherwise, so this alone was very unusual for her.
Fortunately, her attention was distracted rather quickly. The large dragon said it was time for the eggs to hatch and, as if on cue (or maybe actually it was a cue, she had no idea how these things worked), the dragon eggs started to hatch. Scratching and little pings as the eggs started to move, as the young dragons started fighting to escape the eggshells. She watched with interest as they hatched, curious to see all the different types of dragons. She examined them, more to see what they looked like, to learn their behaviors, to keep them in her memory. Any bit of new information was good enough for her.
She thought it odd that they could already talk, and they seemed to stumble towards a particular person to talk to. Maybe someone they took a liking to? One that they might choose for their bonded? One already seemed to think that, but she wasn't overly concerned with the other people there; just watching the dragons.
Inanna watched the woman satisfied with herself although her wings had begun to relax at her sides where they had been folded in previously. The primary feathers brushed the stone floor but she was too busy focusing to mind it. "So... you're my Bonded..." The twoleg murmured, chuckling in some strange way. Inanna shook her head up and down vigorously but realizing the mistake adjusted it to a small nod. "Mhm!"
Excitement fluttered in her curved stomach, making her stand up and smile, tiny fangs lighted from the sunlight at the cave mouth. "We are one." The hatchling bounced, wings fluttering as if she was trying to fly but she swayed and landed on her bottom with a soft thump. Unfazed by this, she moved onto stand since she was too excited to sit anymore. However, sensing that a response should have come by now she looked up at Aquaea curiously. "So.." She used the term the twoleg had used before. The more the twolegged spoke the more she could grasp their language.
"Well, you're interesting, at least. I am Aquaea Hayashimizu, Rawsain and manipulator of water. And what is the name of my rather demanding and honorable partner?" Inanna blinked slowly trying to figure out exactly what she meant by the word 'interesting'. The small dragon looked toward the great dragon then to Najade who was beside her talking to the winged twoleg, confusion darkening her bright blue eyes before she turned to speak again ignoring the first few words. "I am Inanna. Scaled Horse, and my breath is air." She straightened her shoulders and met Aquaea's eyes confidently. Once she felt that the twoleg understood her case she continued on. "Can you show me this manepuulation." The hatchling struggled with the word manipulation but let it drop after another few attempts. The twoleg's name was easier. "Aquaea."
