a character in “Marked for Power”, as played by TheFlag

Description

Full Name: David Vaughn Image

Age: 16

Gender: Male

Likes: books, nightime, quiet backgrounds, velvet and silk, dark chocolate, piano, mythology, computers, rain, history, biology

Dislikes: insects, basically that has more than 4 legs, being clueless, noise, stupidity, lies, failure

Appearance: David is a slender figure, he has a lean build and looks relatively thin almost to the point of looking skeletal, his body seems devoid of fat due to his fast metabolism. Surprisingly though David is quite solid in his physique, he possesses some muscle but it's a more subtle aspect in his look. David stands at 5'9" and weighs approximately 135lbs, he isn't tall for his age or particularly heavy he likes to consider himself average if nothing else. David's skin is clear and a drab olive which is a lighter shade covers his skin, he appears a darker pale which is very smooth and clear, no markings apart from a few blemishes around his body.

David's facial features are stern and quite gaunt, his cheeks are shallow giving his cheekbones a thin appearance this also molds the rest of his face, making his chin thin but still rather large which in turn makes his mouth appear small. David's mouth is thin and pursed into a constant frown or grin, the lips themselves are rather puffed out and thick. David's nose is narrow and thin, it goes alone in a straight line and then ends, comparable to a slide, the nostrils are thin and meet the rest of his nose completely giving David a small triangle-shaped of a nose. David's facial features together are narrow and defined, this makes him appear aloof and very serious and sometimes even sinister. David's hair is thick, the strands and hairs themselves stick together and branch off into individual paths, this makes it very unmanageable but it's also smooth and quite soft. The color of David's hair is a dark auburn like color. The last noticeable facial feature, is of course David's eyes, they're a light hazel color, they are very soft and focused.

Scruffy, that would be a easy word to sum up David's appearance, he looks like he just woke up five minutes ago, whether it's his hair or his aloof stare he looks like he just woke up; the way he wears his clothes is also somewhat scruffy, beyond this though he has a calm and practical demeanor. David has a beige woolen hoodie pulled over his stomach, while he wears a grey t-shirt underneath which is made of cotton. David wears a pair of worn jeans, they have several rips especially around the ankles and the knees, they look old. The jeans are a blue denim color and appear loose around his waist. A expensive watch, which is chain linked silver hangs around his left wrist; a makeshift necklace is hung around his neck, it contains a small crystal which is a yellow hue, a simple chain is holding it together. The necklace contains David's fragment. Lastly David's mark, it covers the back of his neck and is shaped into a small hourglass.

Personality: David is best described as being calm and pragmatic, he always tries to be logical and realistic about situations, he isn't one to waste his time on fantasies or meaningless endeavors, he values his time and tries to use it wisely whenever possible. David is usually a laid-back, collected individual, he takes time to collect his thoughts and because of that he often appears aloof and distant from situations, however in his mind he is planning and analyzing. Nothing really phases David, everything seems to buzz pass him without much of a reaction from him, unless of course it affects him personally, this results on him having a rather open-minded outlook on everything, even the military and their current interests David can understand and even sympathize.

David is also a wildcard, he's very hard to predict and is very impulsive, he acts randomly and has allegiance to no one, he either does something incredibly smart or incredibly stupid or nothing at all. Intelligence is something David values greatly, instead of relying on brute force or manipulation David leans towards smarts and trickery, he uses his brain to get work done and further his goals. David's cunning grouped with his intelligence does make him quite the tactical adversary as he always has a plan mashed together. Although David is mostly cold he does possess a softer side, he is quite lighthearted and accepting this and his dry wit can make him appear fairly easy going. Sarcasm is also something David is capable of, whenever he is in a playful non-serious mood he often uses sarcasm to lighten the moment, he has quite a dry sense of humor laughing at rather ordinary spectacles.

Time is something David also obsesses about, this could be seen as mild OCD as David always has to have a schedule and always be on time, he feels lost without one and always stick to his schedule with utmost commitment. This always makes David plan ahead on situations and arrange his schedule to suit his needs. There always has to be order is David's philosophy, there must be something he can cling to when things get too crazy and descend into chaos. David is also fairly moody, he is easy to irritate and gets angry over tiny things, he is prone to lose his temper but he is always in control of his actions.

Marks: David's mark allows him to manipulate time on varying scales, the nature of this mark allows him to stop, speed up or slow down time. An example for speed, he could speed up time for someone else making them age quicker while doing the same with objects making them degrade faster, or he could augment their physical speed, allowing things to move quicker. For slowing time David could make time slow, too him everyone would be in slow-motion but to them he'd just be moving really quickly, he can exclude individual objects so they are not affected by this. Lastly David can stop time completely, making everything stand still frozen in place. At the moment David can only affect small areas with his mark. Due to the marks position of David's neck it can be activated through instinct or concentration.

History: David is a recent addition to the town of Mission Viejo, arriving a month before the Meteor had struck. David was born and raised in Chicago, he is used to big cities and vast spaces, the small town life at first was very overwhelming, in a place where everybody knew each other and there was nowhere to hide was at first very frightening. David at first stayed in his house and was reclusive, but as soon as he started attending the school he got more lively, foraging out of his house into the town. David found a certain peace there and eventually got used to his new surroundings.

David lives with his mother, his father had left him and his mother when he was eight, leaving for a reason unknown. This left David very angry, the mere mention of his name is enough to annoy David. The house they live in is small, it possesses three bedrooms a single bathroom and living room, it's very modest but it was enough in David's eyes. David would often wander off, disappearing for hours and returning later, in these moments he always used to go down to a small pond and throw stones along the surface, this helped calm him and clear his head, he still does this from time to time.

On the day of the meteor David was outside, when the impact hit he was thrown aside onto the ground, a mysterious shard rained down and pierced his neck, the damage done was nearly serve as the shard nearly pierced his spinal column. Thankfully however it didn't, the impact still left David unconscious, he awoke a few days later, the shard that had hit his neck lay in a glass, a note explained that he could keep the shard as a memento. David remained in hospital another day just so the doctors could screen him and check if everything was okay. When David had gotten out of hospital he fashioned the shard into a small necklace and wore it around his neck, reminding himself of what happened.

Notes: David can play the piano fairly well, David is ambidextrous

Shards of glass rained from the sky, destroying everything that they touched, simply turning it into ash; for a second it'd be frozen in place then the wind would blow and along would the ash. David turned away from the scene and was running furiously in a instant, he gasped for air as he ran through a forest, a dark forest. Trees stretched up far higher than normal; the trees looked dead, withered and rotting slowly. Light dared not enter leaving the forest almost pitch black.

David continued running, pure panic and fear coursing through his veins, he knew he could not outrun the storm of class, it would eventually catch him, it was inevitable. The small survival instinct echoing through him kept him on however, screaming at him not to give up. Surprising as it may sound David had been through this scene many times, he knew how it ended, him dying horribly and then? Nothing. David could now tell that the storm was behind him, a force gripped him forcing him to turn around and face the storm. One glimpse and then it was upon him.

David awoke with a startled gasp followed by him thrashing wildly, it took a couple of seconds for him to realize that he wasn't in dreamland anymore or in his case nightmare land, his body relaxed and he began breathing deeply. "What a nightmare..." he murmured to himself still trying to catch his breath, he pushed himself up and sat on the edge of his bed, his hands supporting his head. David couldn't remember the last time he had had a nightmare, he drew a blank and simply hoped that they wouldn't continue.

In the corner of David's room a clock steadily ticked as David cast his gaze over towards it, his eyes widened and he let out a sigh, he was late... again. David wasn't late for school however, that had become entirely optional, he had another hour before the physics class he wanted to attend started. Instead he was late for his schedule, he should have been up at 8:00am sharp then had breakfast followed by a quick shower and other necessities to prepare for his day. David turned before grabbing a piece of paper from his bedside table, after some quick rearranging he was satisfied (barely) with his new makeshift schedule.

Feeling irritated and worn down David slid off his bed and onto the floor, he wearily stood for a second become shuffling over to his bathroom. David couldn't help but feel annoyed, this wasn't the perfect start to the day, he walked over to the mirror and examined himself, he looked the same as he usually did, a little wide-eyed from his nightmare but that was understandable, what caught his eye though was the pendant he wore: a small yellow crystal which hung from his neck, it was fashioned crudely from a small iron chain. David held it in his palm and squeezed gently, he didn't know why but he felt different wearing this, somehow stronger and generally healthy, that was the only word he could use that fit.

As he turned to look away from his reflection he couldn't help but catch sight of the mark on his neck, it looked like an hourglass, his eyes focused on to it, a numb pain kept emanating from there, he thought nothing of it, a shard of space rock did pierce his neck after all. The appearance of the mark disturbed him though, it just appeared, he thought at first somebody in the hospital had tattooed him or something, then he began hearing rumors about marks appearing randomly on people, he didn't know much but he knew something was wrong. David walked to the cabinet above his sink, he rooted through it before eventually finding a plaster. Using his hands he stuck the plaster on the back of his neck; some of the mark could still be seen but that was barely.

David reentered his room ten minutes later, following his quick shower. His hair was dripping wet, he grabbed a towel and quickly began drying his hair vigorously, after drying himself he donned his casual clothes. David turned once again and regarded himself in his bedroom mirror, he looked tired and his hair was still partly wet, the clothes hung loosely around him. David shrugged indifferent about his appearance. David had never been one to value vanity, he honestly couldn't be bothered for that sort of thing. Too much effort in his opinion. With that out of the way David headed towards his stairs letting out a yawn.

David entered the kitchen, which went through his living room, the house he and his mother had owned was quite small but they made do with the space they had. As David entered the kitchen his head was drawn to the fridge, his eyes came into focus when he realized his mother had left a posted note.

Sorry about letting you sleep in kiddo, didn't have the heart to wake you. You looked so tired, you should really start taking it easy, have a lie in and relax, do that for your mother please? Anyway, I'm off to work hon. You know the drill. I'll be back by six, dinners in the microwave.

David winced slightly, feeling a pang of anger and guilt at the same time. David felt annoyed and frustrated that his mother hadn't woke him but he also felt guilty for feeling mad at her. She held his best interests at heart after all, David let out a sigh before ripping the posted note off the fridge in annoyance, he screwed it up and threw it in the trash. David then turned slowly deciding to make himself breakfast, David took out two pieces of bread and put them both into the toaster, he pushed the spring down turning the toaster on. David then pulled out a plate from the cupboard, as he turned to place the plate on the counter he tripped over his own feet, he lost his grip on the plate, it went hurtling through the air, David raised both his hands in surprise.

What happened next surprised David even further, the plate stopped in midair, frozen. In turn David froze as well shocked, he stared at it for a second before shaking his head, then a loud ding entered the room followed by a spring, toast was done. At that moment however the plate fell to the floor and shattered, David's concentration broken. David looked at the remains of the plate in shock and pure awe, he turned at that moment forgetting about the toast and walked out of the door to his house in pure panic and confusion. Had he done that? David certainly felt like he had, a migraine pounded in the back of his head, he couldn't concentrate. School would have to wait, he had to clear his head and walking felt like a miraculous way to do so.
