Floor 5 - Liars Arcade

RolePlayGateway holds sovereignty over Floor 5, giving them the ability to make limited changes.

168 readers have been here.

Setting

An arcade that spans the entire floor, its main attraction is the annual Tournament of Lies where people of all different ages and occupations compete for a trophy that declares one the King/Queen For Liars. This Tournament takes place in early February.

Otherwise, any arcade game that can be thought of is found here. The manager is a tall man who wears a blank mask. The mask covers his entire face, and he gives his name as Xanatos. The only characteristics that are known is that his hair is a dark brown, and he speaks with an Australian accent.

The names and pictures of all the Kings/Queens of Liars are shown against one wall. One picture seems to pop up more frequently than that of the other victors - but there is no face or name given - it's simply an image of a basketball.

Aven Lengell; Sagaro Mall 5th Floor

Finally, the weekend! It was time to relax, hang out with friends, enjoy life for once! There would be no time for grading tests; fun was the only agenda! Maybe there would be someone he knew at Sagaro? A friend or a student, perhaps? If not, there were definitely single-player games available in Liars, and Xanatos knew him well enough. Galaga would surely be reserved for him: Friday was almost his designated time, 8 pm sharp, trying to beat the high score, that unknown ACE...

It was Aven’s time to kick some alien butt. Sure, there were other games: Pac-Man, Centipede, Dig Dug, Pong, Space Invaders, Donkey Kong, Jumpman, Tron, Tetris, and that was only in the Classics section! Though that was where Aven tended to hang out; call him old-school if you want, but it’s who he is. Galaga is of special interest to him, as he’s been trading the top spot back and forth with this one player, RTS. At least, that was until this ACE player came along and trumped both of their scores. A grand total of 10,876,990 points! How in the world had he done that? It was a full two million points above Aven’s highest, though he was third currently. But today would be the day... AWL would finally rise to the top! ...or at least to second...

But really, how was he supposed to get above his high score? He would need around nine million points to claim second, and it would take up most of his pay for the week... But he had time, a few hours, maybe more... It closed when? Midnight? 3 am? Never? It didn’t matter, he’d be here until he was kicked out, playing this unless interrupted by someone. Or until he finally beat that high score... What was the trick?

He was finally at Sagaro Mall, the classy center of entertainment for the city. He passed the balloon-selling clown (what was his name... oh, right! Easter!) at the escalators and rode up to Floor 1, to Floor 2, 3, 4, and finally stopped on Floor 5: For Liars Arcade. There were notices around about the Tournament of Lies, and it seemed like this year would provide a good turnout. Maybe he should join as well? It seemed like some students at school were interested, and it would be fun showing them a thing or two about life!

Xanatos greeted him as he entered, and Aven smiled, walking jauntily, almost prancing to his seat of power, the reserved Galaga machine. Sure, there were others around playing assorted games, but this was his game, his time to shine. He entered the first credit and placed a hand on the joystick, the other on the buttons. Game on.

Aven Lengell, Kaden Jannsen; Sagaro Mall 5th Floor

Things were not starting out well. Sure, he had double ships. Sure, he had five hundred thousand points already. Sure, this could be considered a good game. By some people. But Aven was on his last ship. Where had his touch gone? By now he would have at least five ships though normally more. Something was bothering him... He let the ship die and turned around, ready to take a break, calm down, get back into the rhythm of the game. But he was stopped by a remark.

“Wow, you’re awesome! I’ve never seen anyone play like this before!” There was a kid (his student?) in front of him, a red-haired boy with sketchpad in hand who seemed entranced by the game he had just finished playing. That horrible game... How could he think it was actually any good? Oh well, he could humor him for a while, maybe get his touch back. In response, “Thanks... Kaden!” (The name had finally come to him after a brief pause. This was the new transfer student at Cenriel.) “If you’d like, you could play with me? Two-player has its charms. And it does look like you want to play, correct? Come, sit down for a while and play against me!”

Kaden looked startled, surprised, and then worried. He glanced behind him at something outside the Arcade. However, he looked back almost immediately and responded, “Sure, I have a little time, why not? You’re definitely skilled; there’s a lot I could learn. I just hope I don’t lose too horribly...”

Aven laughed in response, “Don’t worry, there’s nothing competitive about this game. You win some, you lose some, the world goes on anyway. Just have fun in the meantime, enjoy yourself, lose yourself in the game! Here, I’ll even pay for you!” He slid two argen into the machine and pressed 2-player. His hand on the joystick, a finger on the button, he entered the game and started the lesson. “You’ll be second player, so watch me for now. One trick is to get a second ship early on. There will be a Boss that tries to get your ship...” He continued to explain a few of the tricks he’d learned, eager to teach his new pupil. Maybe this would be a better game after all...
