Known Equipment & Gear
L2311c "Stalwart" Pistol
- Compact version with 3" barrel and 12 round magazine.
A tough, powerful and reliable sidearm, the Stalwart pistol is the weapon of choice for Union Officers, machine-gunners, biotics and snipers who need a dependable backup weapon. Firing 10x35mm ferrous slugs from a 18-round magazine, the Stalwart may not have the most powerful shots, or the largest magazine, but it strikes a compromise between the extremes which has made it extremely popular. With an enlarged, single-finger trigger guard and its magazine stored in the grip, the Stalwart, while by no means a small pistol, is far more compact than the previous generation of weapons, while still maintaining the edge in both power and magazine capacity.
*The L2311c is a compact version of the venerable Stalwart, designed for concealed carry, or those who simply don't want to lug a large-framed pistol around. With shorter rails and grip, the L2311c is less powerful and has a smaller magazine, but is still perfectly suitable for self defense.
M509 High-G Universal Flight Suit
- M509q Quarian Pattern
Designed for Black Star pilots operating air and spacecraft in rough conditions, or with minimal inertial dampening, the M509 Universal Flight Suit provides the same life-support functions as Paladin Armor, without the heavy plating, strength enhancement, or cumbersome fusion cell power pack. Composed of synthetic, moisture absorbing elastic polymers with integrated heating and cooling conduits layered with high-strength Kevlar-laced Nylon polymers to provide a tough, waterproof outer shell, the suit has minimal armor, save for elbow and knee pads, as well as light polymer plating around the legs to allow interface with the Universal Operation Cradle that serves as the pilot's seat in many smaller Union craft such as the Rael fighter. In addition, the suit has a jointed, semi-powered exoskeleton sewn into the outer layer of Nylon-Kevlar, which protects the wearer's limbs from g-forces or rough landings, without enhancing or hindering strength, mobility or reflexs. The neural interface plates sewn into the back of the suit which tap into the wearer's spinal column through electrochemical sensors allow the protective skeleton to flow seamlessly with the wearer's thoughts, and the use of neural interface control on select craft.
Physical Profile
Kai'Saaya is a small, slender Quarian. At 19, she is one of the youngest people to be inducted into the S.O.D., but her youthful appearance belies a highly talented pilot. Kai has a round, child-like face with a small, turned-up nose and arched, inquisitive brows. Her unruly black hair is cropped short to avoid interfering with her helmet when at the controls of a Rael fighter. When not in full kit, she spikes it up.
Kai has modified her M509q flightsuit to a significant degree, fitting it with an enhanced kinetic barrier generator, custom-tuned neural interface spinal receptors and numerous patches, badges and insignia from various bands, units and Black Star campaigns. The leg plating is painted black with twin yellow racing strips going down each leg, the same color scheme as her father's old mercenary power armor. When out of armor, she wears the fatigue pants from a Union Flight Specialist base duty uniform and a tank top, along with her prize possession, a pair of old-style over the head headphones, customized for her Quarian ears.
Psychological Profile
Kai'Saaya is spunky, inquisitive, energetic, and more than a bit arrogant and entitled. While she would never admit it, her impudence is most likely a product of her upbringing as Xander O'Tarin's adoptive daughter. While not resentful of her privileged youth, Kai is eager to prove herself as more than Black Star's princess, and demonstrate that she can hold her own as a pilot, without having to rely on her father to get her through life. Despite this, she is fiercely loyal to Xander, and will defend his actions and ideals to the death, unaware that her blind loyalty is more disappointing to the tycoon than outright rebellion would be.
Cocky and hot-headed, Kai never shies from a challenge or backs down from a fight. Having never met her match as a pilot, she is unaware of her limits, a failing that has led to many very near scrapes with death after pushing a craft past it's safe operating conditions. In spite of this, or perhaps because of it, she is an incredibly deadly opponent in space, her sheer recklessness and aggression at the controls being as demoralizing to the foe as her considerable skill. Equally terrified are her unfortunate passengers, who emerge battered and seasick, thanks to Kai's habit of turning down a ship's inertial dampeners and disabling automatic safeties to increase maneuverability.
Historical Profile
Born to Cyllia'Saaya and Tor'Saaya, Quarian master shipwrights working for Black Star, Kai was initially raised in shipyards and space stations throughout Black Star's massive trade empire. At the age of 7, she lost her parents when a compartment they were inspecting accidentally decompressed, sucking them into space. Orphaned and without living relatives, young Kai seemed bound for the foster system. But Xander O'Tarin, an old friend of her family (her aunt had been his pilot during the Shrine Expedition), learning of her parents' demise, flew immediately to the Rannoch Orbital Shipyards and adopted the little Quarian on the spot.
Xander and his wife, Cyria, seemed unable to have children, due to a mental condition that prevented her from melding properly. And so, out of the tragic loss of the Saaya family, a small blessing emerged. Xander, always fiercely protective of his loved ones, and Cyria, kind to a fault, accepted Kai as their own, raising her at their estate on New Hope. Smothered with affection, and perhaps more than a little spoiled, Kai'Saaya found herself in a world where anything was possible, a stark contrast to the lives most Quarians led in the 24th century.
When she was old enough, Xander began bringing her along on his business trips across the Black Star Fleet. So Kai spent her formative years, as she had spent her infancy, on and around starships. When she displayed an interest in flight, Xander encouraged it, buying her an aircar (illegally) at 13, and allowing her to fly shuttles once she had mastered the atmospheric craft. Eventually, she had surpassed what Black Star's pilots could teach her, and began seeking opportunities outside the company. She soon discovered one that seemed perfect: an elite flight school unmatched in all of Council Space. There was only one problem: the school was on Thessia, and even though she was able to pass both the practical and knowledge tests with flying colors, she lacked one qualification: she was not Asari.
Upon learning that his daughter had been rejected from a position because of her race, Xander flew into a rage. Diverting an entire cargo liner, he flew directly to Thessia and stormed the Dean's office. Only Xander O'Tarin and the Dean know exactly what happened in that room, but the tycoon emerged with a wild look in his eyes, and the Dean, sporting a hefty nosebleed, approved Kai's application immediately. With this final barrier removed, Kai honed her already impressive skills under the effective, if reluctant, teachings of pilots with thousands of years of experience. Graduating at the top of her class, Kai'Saaya enlisted in Black Star's security division and quickly developed an affinity for Frigates. The power of a starship, combined with the nimble maneuverability of a fighter, appealed to her, particularly in the case of Black Star's Executive Cutter, and the Blade-class Stealth Attack Frigate that was developed from it. Given her skill, and familiarity with the vessel, Kai'Saaya was a natural choice for Operation Overlord.
Misc. Notes
Kai'Saaya has an affinity for music, particularly that of the bass-heavy electronic variety developed on Earth.
