✦ Full Name ✦
  • Baishu Yaya
  • Origin and Meaning: Yaya's name is Chinese in origin. Her surname, Baishu, is written with the characters meaning “white” and “book.” Yaya is written by repeating the character meaning “elegance” twice over.
✦ Aliases/Sobriquets ✦
  • White Phantom
  • Addendum: A sobriquet that was given to her when she first appeared as an Endling. Since nobody got a clear view of her save her white jacket, and most security footage of her appearance was mysteriously deleted, for a long time, this was the most information anyone had on her. She's become a somewhat pseudo-legendary figure on the internet, as nobody's sure precisely who or what she is.

✦ Physical Description ✦
  • Petite, lithe, and pale. In these three words alone, you have a fairly good summary of Yaya's appearance. Even standing rigidly upright, as she tends to, she's hardly imposing, being at least a head shorter than the other Endlings. Rather on the lean side as well, at a glance, she seems rather scrawny, with very little of either flab or muscle clinging to her form. And, as for her pallor, generally the first thing people notice when they look at her is the color white, be it her flesh, her hair, or her choice in wardrobe. Between these traits, Yaya has a somewhat wispy, almost otherworldly feel to her presence. Her smooth skin is white as snow, her silky hair brighter still, shimmering like silver, and her small form seems so fragile that you could swear that if you looked away for even an instant, you might look back only to find that she'd faded away like a ghost.

Another good way to describe Yaya would be to say she seems strangely grown up. This might seem counter-intuitive as a descriptor for someone so small, but nevertheless, it's very difficult to describe her in any other way, given her rigid bearing and somewhat angular features. With high cheekbones, a narrow forehead, a petite nose and ears, and a short, sharp jawline, the lines of her face are very clearly drawn, seeming almost deliberately designed to frame what is doubtless the most prominent feature of her face: her eyes. A shocking shade of bright, clear blue, they seem to almost glow, even by comparison to her already pale skin and glistening hair. Yet, at the same time, they seem strangely... dull? No, perhaps "blank" would be a better way to describe it, as even when someone has her complete focus, she almost seems to be staring through them rather than at them, as though she's always looking at something just a little out of everyone else's sight.

On that note, perhaps the most bizarre thing about Yaya's appearance would be her bearing. Carrying herself very stiffly and rigidly, she presents an image that one might find either comical or disturbing, like a porcelain doll playing at being a toy soldier. Her back upright, her shoulders rolled back, her neck straight, and her head raised to stare straight forward, she marches as though to the beat of an unseen drum, walking with a measured, even, and perhaps even robotic gait. Yet despite this rather constant intensity with which she carries herself, she seems strangely sedate in all other respects. When she doesn't have to, she doesn't move at all, letting her arms hang limply at her sides, and freezing stock still when she stops, as though awaiting further inputs from some unseen remote controller. Her face is almost always blank, featuring the same impassive stare day in and day out, those deep blue eyes always looking just a little further ahead, stopping only occasionally to blink one or twice very slowly and deliberately, like a sleepwalker only just beginning to wake. Yaya smiling is almost unheard of, to the point that one might fear that her porcelain-like face would crack should she ever attempt such a thing.

As mentioned above, her choice in wardrobe is fairly predictable, consisting almost exclusively of an nonrestrictive inner layer - usually a tightly fitted sleeveless black undershirt, often paired with shorts - coupled with a pleated black skirt of varying length and matching high boots and stockings, perhaps to appear more "normal" or ladylike. Then, over this, she usually throws a rather nondescript white hoodie that she's almost never seen without, which serves to keep her warm and hide her wrist-mounted computer from view a good part of the time. Oddly enough, she makes almost no effort to choose attire that would serve to protect her in a fight, or even conceal her identity. Does she not care at all if she dies or is captured...? Regardless, overall, her outfit almost makes her look more like someone making a halfhearted attempt at being a delinquent than it makes her appear to be a dangerous mage bent on overthrowing the workings of society as a whole. But, weird as she is, that sort of clash kind of suits her.

Overall, Yaya might be seen as rather cute, but at the same time, could just as easily be seen as disturbing, given her distinctly robotic manner. It all depends on how one sees her. Yet, regardless of who you are, you might get a very distinct impression upon interacting with Yaya that, no matter who she might have once been...
the person you're dealing with isn't human anymore.
✦ Distinguishing Features ✦
  • Pure White: No matter how you look at it, silver hair isn't exactly normal. That, coupled with her pale complexion, is enough to make her stand out as unusual to almost any observer.
  • Trademark Outfit: As mentioned above, regardless of the time, place, or situation, Yaya is almost never seen without her trademark white hoodie. She doesn't get emotional over many things, but it appears to be one of a very small number of possessions she cherishes.
  • I Love The Power Glove: It's so bad. Ehem. Yaya is also almost never seen without a special vambrace containing a built-in holoterminal. It's been customized with several extra storage drives, allowing her to save massive quantities of information - the entire library of items she's digitized with her magic, as well as backups of her own data, to be exact. Aside from summoning items, she also uses this to connect her to wireless networks, creating a path - she calls them "Net Roads" - for her digitized self to follow. As it's so useful for her powers, it's no wonder she keeps it with her everywhere.
✦ Oddities ✦
  • But She's So Small!: Yaya is, quite simply, not at all imposing. Despite her mediocre height and fragile appearance, however, she tends to perform improbable feats of strength, speed, and acrobatics on a fairly regular basis. She also seems to be significantly heavier than her small size would indicate...
  • Staaaaare~: Yaya's outward expressions of emotion are remarkably understated, giving her something of a perpetual poker face. She also tends to focus absolutely on one thing at a time, which can make it rather awkward to talk to her, since all she really does is stare impassively at you so long as you're speaking, answer as curtly as she can, and then just go right back to staring. The fact that she doesn't blink much doesn't really help either... ()
  • Curious: Despite her tendency to focus solely on one thing, Yaya also tends to change what that thing is on a fairly regular basis. Plenty of normal things are more than enough to catch her eye, and she usually won't leave them alone until her curiosity is satisfied. As such, if someone stops paying attention to her for even a short time, they might find that she's disappeared to go investigate some new, interesting thing that she's never seen before.
✦ Quirks, Tics, and Mannerisms ✦
  • Copycat: Yaya is infamously bad at emoting. Completely rigid and mechanical on her own, she thus tends to try to "fit in" to conversations by copying what everyone else is doing. However, she doesn't really get the subtleties of body language, and thus tends to mimic other people's movements exactly, regardless of its suitability in a given situation.
  • Taking Notes...?: That's not the only way she tries to mimic normal people, either. Throughout almost any social situation, Yaya can usually be found asking for clarification on specific things, then recording them as notes on her wrist computer. This might not be quite so strange if most of the things she asks about weren't so obvious to anyone normal. Friendship, love, and the like all seem like things a person would be somehow instinctively familiar with, but when it comes to Yaya, she's got no clue whatsoever.
  • Self-Proclaimed Computer: When asked about most of her bizarre behavior, Yaya will usually give a very simple answer. Her singleminded focus? "A computer works with maximal efficiency when solving a single problem at a time." The reason she records everything around her? "Memory is fallible and can be lost or overwritten. Therefore, it is prudent to establish backups beforehand, so that what is important isn't forgotten." The reason she's always so curious about everything? "An algorithm can only be established to complete a given operation once all relevant parameters are clearly defined." She seems to think that she herself is a computer, in more ways than just having the ability to enter one. Maybe her powers have taken a toll on her identity?

✦ Combat Capabilities ✦
  • Unlike most Endlings, who devote themselves solely to the practice of magic, or most modern technicians, whose prowess lies solely in their mastery of technology, Yaya represents a completely different approach to combat. Revolving around her mastery of three spells, her abilities allow her to completely change the very nature of her being.

Her first spell, Waveform Astralization, is based in the premise of converting her physical body to a spiritual form. Originally, this spell simply allowed her to become a ghost, unseen by others and untouchable by matter. However, with its new modifications, it serves a completely different purpose. With it, her body is analyzed rapidly via several cybernetic bioscanners implanted in her spinal column. Then, once this readout is complete, the data is transmitted to her personal computer, which is linked with her cerebral functions via additional implants. "Saving" this data as a template, she then casts the spell, which, at its most basic level, allows her to convert anything that has been "primed" with her biological matter - blood works best due to its arcane properties - and had its data scanned completely by her computer into a digital form based on the data received from the scan. This allows her to transform her body along with anything it's currently holding into the form of an EM wavelength which her soul can control at will, or to forcibly encode other objects or people, capturing and storing them inside her computer as files. However, for anything other than her own body, the scan takes much more time, requiring a few minutes to analyze and encode the item in question, rather than happening in a second or two. Depending on the wavelength she chooses and whether or not she chooses to continue projecting its image, her body may remain visible in waveform as a sort of hologram, or it might disappear from view completely. Regardless, she's capable of transmitting her waveform's data over wireless networks, allowing her to essentially digitize every aspect of her body and personality, and upload it into computers. Interestingly, it also allows her to convert some of her spiritual energy into electrical energy, powering technology through touch.

Once inside, her second spell, Data Controller, comes into play. Based on principles of alchemy, it creates nothing and destroys nothing, instead simply changing its form. However, due to the ease with which data can be rewritten, this spell turned out to be much more effective at altering files than it was at altering the state of matter. Essentially, it allows her to use her will in place of manual coding, rapidly altering the nature of data. Usually, she uses this to assume control of computer networks by replacing their operating systems with her own consciousness, thus re-purposing all of their data and algorithms for her own use. She can also use this to rewrite her own code, alterations which remain effective even after she's returned to her physical body. This allows her to recover from injuries at the cost of her memories by restoring from a backup, or to more slowly and painstakingly rebuild her real body after it has received damage. Additionally, it allows her to modify stolen objects she's digitized, allowing her to customize various weapons she has acquired and increase their physical effectiveness, or even to fuse them with her own body, to the point of, say, replacing an arm with a laser cannon, or something equally extreme. This is, incidentally, the reason for her body's surprising speed, strength, and weight, as she has long since rewritten her muscle structure using the carbon fiber "muscles" of a dedicated power lifter droid as a template, making her biological parts work more on par with those of the machine. However, although she's tried structurally reinforcing the rest of her body to cope with this, she still can't use her upgrades to their fullest without badly damaging her own internal organs or even shattering her own bones from the strain, limiting the utility of this "upgrade."

Finally, there is her last and least-used spell, Wave Overlay, designed for use on a team with other Endlings. Essentially, it's a simple combination of her first two abilities. She scans someone else's data beforehand, and then, when a battle starts, astralizes both herself and her subject. Synchronizing their data, she creates an upgraded form of her original subject, granting them weapons and armor from her own arsenal, increasing their physical abilities by rewriting their data, and increasing their magical abilities by adding her soul's energy to theirs. A synchronized form created through this spell is an obnoxiously tough foe to face, since Yaya can effectively compensate for her partner's weaknesses by analyzing the enemy's strategy and altering their bodies to be resistant to the enemy's weapons, can constantly give them new armaments depending on the situation, and can even heal their injuries mid-fight by repeatedly astralizing their body and repairing it, necessitating a one-shot kill to eliminate the subject before she can astralize them, or some sort of powerful electromagnetic attack to force Yaya out of her waveform, breaking the overlay.

Regardless, this does give Yaya several advantages. She's capable of preserving herself by escaping to the internet, where she's very difficult to eliminate, and can rapidly recover from injuries by using her Data Controller or by restoring herself to a previous "savestate." She's also capable of "hacking" in a fashion that it's very difficult to stop, due to her constant erasure or alteration of any firewalls or codes put in place to stop her. And, finally, she's a decently capable combatant, capable of stealing and repurposing the technology employed against her, and having already collected a fairly sizable arsenal of various guns and blades, of which her most preferred weapon - a High Frequency Vibrosword - is shown in the pictures. However, at the same time, she has several glaring weaknesses. For one thing, she's incapable of controlling a system without being inside it in her waveform, meaning in order to hack something, she has to remain in waveform, effectively sidelining her. For another, while in her waveform, she could be completely incapacitated by a well-timed EMP, which would, unless her soul could resist its effects, completely dissipate her body, leaving her permanently as a disembodied ghost and effectively killing her. And, inside a system, a sufficiently skilled hacker might even be able to rewrite her data without her noticing, depriving her of access to her armaments, trapping her in her waveform by locking her inside a specific computer and preventing her from jumping to a different platform, or even reprogramming her very mind to serve them. She's little less vulnerable on a physical front, either, as her body is only slightly more durable than a normal Human's, meaning anti-cyborg weaponry might be enough to reduce her to a fine red mist in a single hit, preventing her from restoring herself. And, even though she's much stronger and faster than you might expect, she's still completely outmatched by actual combat cyborgs, forcing her to rely on skill and tactics rather than brute strength or raw speed. Finally, there's the simple fact that encoding herself and rewriting her own data is a very dangerous process - one which risks damaging who she is on a very basic level. Were she hacked, it's quite possible that she might lose her individuality entirely...

✦ Personality ✦
  • Upon interacting with Yaya, it becomes immediately obvious to essentially anyone that she's not really... normal, persay. Always cold, taciturn, and logical, she speaks only when necessary, and even then, her voice only comes out in a dull monotone. Reserved and aloof, she's very difficult to get a read on due to her perpetual poker face. Because of this, most people who interact with her usually come to the conclusion that she's not human, regardless of whether or not they are fully familiar with the nature of her abilities as an Endling. Oddly enough, Yaya doesn't seem to mind these conclusions, and sometimes even encourages them. Overall, she plays the part of a simple machine quite well, focusing solely on her objectives and how to complete them, and seeming completely oblivious of countless basic aspects of being Human.

However, difficult though it may be to realize at first, this is not all there is to her. Although she's perhaps much more understated about expressing her feelings than an ordinary person would be, she's not devoid of emotion. More accurately, Yaya herself doesn't understand what exactly it means to feel or express an emotion, and thus suppress most "strange feelings" in the name of maintaining her own functionality. And thus, not understanding what it is that she herself feels, she sees no need to give it vent through outward expression, keeping herself calm and under control as best she can at all times.

Yet, every now and again, the facade breaks. Something will get to her enough that she'll feel angry, and snap at someone without thinking, then wonder why it was that she just did that. Or perhaps she'll feel sad, and avoid contact with others, wondering all the while why it is that seeing certain people causes her to experience pain. Or, if shown kindness, she might find herself showing a slight smile without realizing that anything has changed. Because of this, even if it's hard to tell what she's feeling on the outside, it's not impossible. Consequently, it's likely that the people around her, assuming that they become good enough at reading her little tics and tells, might actually know more about what she's feeling than she herself does.

Even so, coming up with a full estimate of her personality is still a herculean task. What can be said for sure is that she values her duty above all else, focusing solely on her assigned objectives and how to complete them, obeying every order issued to her by her masters without hesitation. This naturally might make one think she's quite ruthless. Yet, on the other hand, she almost seems to go out of her way to avoid hurting people unnecessarily, taking advantage of any and all loopholes she can find in order to avoid directly causing harm to others - quite strange, considering her allegiance to the Endlings and their own stated agenda to tear down the very world and replace it with a new order of their own. So, then, does this mean she's actually a kind person? Given her aloof demeanor and inability to communicate adequately with most people, this seems somehow strange, or unlikely. This is only reinforced by her oftentimes brutal honesty. She does not mince words or prevaricate, instead stating exactly what she thinks, disregarding the feelings of others completely due to her own lack of knowledge about how people feel and behave. Due to this, she often ends up inadvertently making enemies because of how critically she comes off, hurting people's feelings with her blunt criticism.

For this lack of tact, many people come to the conclusion that Yaya is an egotist, or somehow thinks herself to be above others. Yet, this is an easy misunderstanding to clear up, for as it turns out, the person she's most vocal in criticizing is none other than herself. More aware of her own shortcomings than anyone else, she reasons, she should be the one to identify and correct them. However, even as much of a perfectionist as she is, she unable to fully correct her many flaws, driving her to repeatedly belittle herself for these perceived failures. More often than not, she'll refer to herself in such "glowing" terms as "this mess," taking many people who assume she's arrogant aback.

These oddities aside, Yaya's most obvious trait is her curiosity. Seeming to lack any knowledge of many things people take for granted, she incessantly seeks to rectify the flaws in her comprehension, inquiring into everything from the functions and purposes of specific devices to the deeper meanings of human emotions. Any time she sees the opportunity to learn more about people and how they work, she takes it without hesitation, recording in detail whatever answer she receives. On that note, she's a bit naive, as she seems at once to expect that people's answers to these questions are 100% reliable regardless of the source or their qualifications, and that there is only one specific answer to any given question. So, in the event of a contradiction, she'd likely be momentarily baffled, wondering how both answers could be correct, before deciding that they couldn't be and interviewing a non-biased third party to see which position he sided with. Of course, this approach is only useful in some cases, like the function of a given device or tool. While it's possible that one or two people might deliberately deceive her for their own amusement, eventually this approach will lead her to the truth. But, there are some questions that don't have only one answer, like "What is love, and how does one know that they are experiencing it?" Due to this, she's bound to encounter confusion as different people give her different interpretations of the same feelings, and she has to sort through them and decide how to relate these conflicting "truths" to her own experiences.

Over all, Yaya is a puzzle to try to figure out. She seems emotionless, but in fact is simply concealing her own feelings even from herself. She's aloof and callous, yet curious and naive. And, despite that very naivete, she seems oddly gloomy and cynical, repeatedly espousing her own impotence when it comes to acting on her own, relying solely on fulfilling her duties. When compared with her overly trusting, childlike curiosity, this cynicism seems misplaced, as though it belonged to an entirely different person. And, indeed, sometimes it seems like the way Yaya acts now isn't who she really is, as though there's someone else living inside her.

In no place is this more obvious than in her dealings with one specific person: Kagoshima Kamui. Although she claims she doesn't know who he is, and is simply working with him according to her orders from the higher-ranking Endlings, her attitude in dealing with him is significantly different from the way she interacts with normal people. Instead of speaking only when necessary, she'll much more frequently start conversations with him, asking about whatever comes to her mind. Even if she criticizes him, she seems to look up to him in equal respect, adhering to his orders without question even if he technically doesn't outrank her. And, perhaps most shockingly of all, he's one of the few people who can provoke an emotional reaction from her. Granted, it's usually one of frustration, as she finds it difficult to understand him most of the time, but even so, this is much more open than she usually is with anyone. More likely than not, this is due to their prior acquaintance, even if Yaya herself doesn't remember it.

Yet, there are almost times when it seems like she does. Normally humble and obedient, she'll sometimes snap unexpectedly at those who outrank her, or go against their will to find some loophole when there's something she doesn't want to do. Although still ostensibly the servant of the Endlings, she has a surprising rebellious streak for somebody who never says no. This isn't limited to other Endlings, either, as she can be astonishingly bitter and disdainful towards her enemies as well, looking to pick apart their beliefs even as she fights against them on a physical level. Although she seldom breaks her stoic mask, and although perhaps not even she herself realizes that she's growing bitter or why, it seems like she actually might just hate figures of authority in general, almost as much as she seems to hate herself for her shortcomings. This, in part, might contribute to her gloomy and cynical streak, and her professed feelings of powerlessness. Perhaps this was her original reason for joining the Endlings, even if she's forgotten precisely why she did so? And, if so, maybe the reason why she's beginning to grow rebellious is because she's become disillusioned by them in turn...? Yet, given her resignation to following orders, it seems as though she's given up on ever breaking free of this status quo of being a pawn for others. Or, perhaps more accurately, it seems she's literally incapable of doing so. Given how singlemindedly she devotes herself to her duty, her missing memories, the inexplicable contradictions in her personality, and the abrupt shift in the nature of her powers, it's easy to at last put together all the pieces and discover the real reason for her shattered identity and indefatigable devotion to her own servitude despite for her professed hatred for the same. At some point when her new powers were first developed, some massive alteration must have been performed on her data, reprogramming her to become unable to do anything but serve her new masters.

She's already completely under the Endlings' control, try though she might to fix herself or rebel. And, until she can begin repairing her own data, it's unlikely this will ever change...

Baishu Yaya's Story
