Almost 41 months have passed. 41 months of this sickening desire to find the one guilty of robbing me of my family...and best friend. The reason for one to do such a thing remains a mystery to me, though it would make sense if that individual held some sort of irreconcilable grudge towards myself. These months of loneliness have drawn to nothing, and I doubt I'll ever find the suspect and appease my heart.

Here I sat-watching, waiting. The only thing that was given to me that might help me find the guilty individual was what my mother had told me before passing. Few clues of facial features she'd managed to murmur in her terror were left ingrained in my mind, and I could just hope to find that person. It was rather hard considering the size of this world, but there wasn't much I couldn't do with this nagging feeling....one that gave me the will to persevere.

It was then that I heard footsteps approaching, though I knew better than to run now with the proximity of the crunching that came with each step. Within seconds, I'd been pinned to the wall, but didn't really react as I examined the man. A man in his late thirties or early forties with baby blue eyes, blonde hair, and of about 6'1". No. Not whom I was looking for. His breath reeked of alcohol--cheap beer, to be exact--and he had a lazy appearance. I had to commend his strength though, even if it wasn't enough.

"How about a little fun tonight, missy? I'll make it short and sweet." Those alcohol-ridden words stumbled out of his mouth.

"I say you fuck off before you regret it, bastard," I uttered fiercely before slipping out of his grip quickly and grabbing him by the throat. There was little resistance that came from him before he left, simply saying "bitch" before leaving. Things like these I'd gotten used to after many nights of staying out in the midst of the worst parts of town. A cool breeze blew hair across my face, making a form that was off a few feet away indistinguishable.

The day had been long and hard for me, not just the fact it was hot for most of the sunlight hours but the camera was starting to hang heavily on my neck and frankly my soul. Thankfully I had left such a thing in my car before coming to one of my more usual dives. The bartender "Franklin" gives me another look as I signal him with my fingers that I want one more for the road and he obliges. Even in my rookie days I came here with others from my unit and even now I can see several of them sitting in their group in the back booth. A testament to the ways that that friends can forget one another so quickly.

The new shot runs across my eyes as that train of thought departs the station and I down it quickly. Scotch may be a more soothing drink compared to most but I am not so partial to the sting when it hits the back of my tongue.

I stand and slide my coat on before heading to the door, feeling a small gap in my steps as the pain from sitting for too long creeps into my spine. Only a few moments of rubbing the spot with my free hand makes it vanish as quickly as it came and I pull out my keys with my right hand. Not really wanting to drive just a few blocks, but I did need to grab a few things from my car.

The starless sky of the city is dotted with several arrant lights that glide across the black canvas. I give a small glance before my head stops on a problem that seems to be on the rise.

Two bodies not far from the corner of the street and one was against the other.
She was a young woman with a somewhat wild look about her and I cannot lie, I was interested in the encounter. Because it was easy to see he was not really going to take "no" lightly if she said it. But before I could act she had forced him off and he turned away with a word under his breath. He looks at me only a second before making his way across the street and out of sight. But I could care less as I keep my eyes on the girl.

A passing car bathes her in light for only a moment, letting me see all that the dim street lamp could not allow and I see that she is still carrying a bitter look in her eyes. I swallow back an ouch of measure before speaking "Is everything okay miss?"

After pulling my hair out of the way, I saw the man approaching. I hoped for him to just be passing by, but that ended up not being the case. I turned to look at him once he spoke, clearly not used to being spoken to.

"Yes," I responded simply, unsure of what else to say. At that point, I was unsure of whether to be annoyed or if I wanted to continue to speak to the man. I hadn't spoken to anyone normally in a while, so it probably wasn't the best idea to attempt it now. The only thing I could do was turn and face forward, after all, I still had to keep watch of him since he was possibly dangerous, though he did t match the image in my head either.

If I had chosen to live differently, to forget, I would've probably had less issues speaking to others than I did now. It wasn't exactly something that'd be helpful if I ever decided to reintegrate myself into society. It had probably already been decided by many that I was a mad woman, but I didn't care. I had a goal.

I approach the young woman after she answers, which in itself was fast and rather distant.
She was still on on edge all by herself as I could still see her eyes trace the man off into the distance with what little light was present could allow for me to see.

I walked up to her, being cautious and slow as not to further agitate her anymore. By eye for detail was taking over my intuition on the moment, seeing she was dressed somewhat homely. However it was obvious that she was well enough that she wasn't homeless and she was physically in good enough shape to do something just in case the older man came back. She wasn't a call girl either, though she did possess a perch of beauty about herself as well.

So why was she just standing here?

The question passed through my mind as I started to ponder, but quickly my subconscious swept such a wonder under its own rug for the time being. I gave her a simple nod with a cursory word "Its getting late out miss, just keep safe" as I walked passed and gave a quick spin of my keys in hand.

Turning the edge of the corner I see my car, not more the twenty feet away and press the chain to unlock it. Ready to retrieve a few things as I dip my head in and my hands quickly grab my camera, as well as my sidearm that I stashed under the center console.

I don't give the weapon a look or a thought for I know its mine and I slide its holster over my belt, letting it fasten onto its normal hiding place under the back of my coat. Sliding the camera's strap over my shoulder, letting its long lens slide under my arm and hang neatly. I am struck with the urge to look once more and as I do, I see that she still stands there.

A lone figure casting a dim shadow due to the poor lights and dominating the sidewalk with presents alone.

Curiosity gets the better of me as I find myself wetting my lips to speak and raising my voice over the bustle of the city.

"You live far from here? For a moment my brain felt as though it would jump out and slap me for sounding like a nightly stalker. Then again I never really had that much luck with woman in the beginning.

Keep safe? That wasn't going to happen, but I nodded anyway. In my activities, the only safe one was probably breathing.

There was a great amount of worry crossing my mind as the man spoke to me. The fact was, that the more he associated with me, the more chances he had of being in danger. Too many people were after me, and that was something I didn't want to make others pay for. It was also too late at night for someone to be out that wasn't either drunk or coming back from work, which I supposed the latter was so.

"I live pretty far away," I said, hoping he'd leave. It was actually pretty okay of a distance because of the fact that I was used to it, but it wasn't like I was home very much anyway, though I'd kept some jobs I wasn't going to boast about, unless I was on the job and looking for new clients, in order to pay for that home. Things like rest and food killed precious time.

The figure across the road kept my attention. Why was he standing there watching me? In the end, I walked across the emptiness of the street with determined steps, completely forgetting the man that had been talking to me. The figure kept moving, and I kept right behind him, picking up my pace.

After a few minutes, he stopped behind a building and I caught up to him. "Who are you?" I said as he turned around. Blue eyes were visible from the light given by the moon, as well as the almost black hair. He looked rough, and had visible signs of aging...and had a scar running down his cheek. Before I could react, he had me in a choke hold and I felt something sink into my side. "Looks like I've found you. You're next, bitch," said the ragged voice from behind me as I felt the sharp object get removed.

"Damn it. This is why I should focus more," I mumbled to myself. He walked away, but I couldn't find it in myself to chase after him due to the shock of having found the man. I leaned against the edifice and touched the spot where the pain radiated from. It was wet. Blood...of course. I was still alive after all. Why he wouldn't kill me immediately remained a mystery--what was the point in stabbing me and running away? Did he think I'd become fearful?

"I live pretty far away" She said.
It was an obvious ploy to get me off the subject and moving along, after being turned down so many times in my life I can easily spot that now. But as I looked upon her face I could see that she was more then preoccupied by something and it was apparent that the figure standing across the street from her was becoming more of a draw for her attention.

At that point she chose to leave me behind, heading across the street towards the lone figure as they moved away and she gave me the full grace of her back having resigned me to memory. I watched for only a few moments and I could feel the weight of my camera on the tip of my grasp of my hand. Not even a noticeable moment passed after I realized it was there did I catch myself in the middle of snapping several shots of her and the lone figure from my lone stone block on the sidewalk.

It was dark yes, but thankfully technology could make up were my eyes would normally fail.

I turned and faced my car on my path back home, the loft was only a few blocks from here and I wanted to get some rest before meeting my client tomorrow. I gave the images on my camera a few glances and perched a smile as I found one of this mystery girl, turning the corner behind not even a minute ago. But now I could feel a sense of dread for some reason, accompanied by a strange sense of worry that raced across my mind.

I wondered what she was doing and where she was going; The man I caught in the first two snaps didn't look that agreeable in the first place and for all I know he could be planning something dreadful. Why else would he just stand on the other side of the street and just peer at her for so long. That or it could just be my old police intuition kicking in.

In the early days I would just kick in the door and say I heard a scream on the report later, claiming just cause. But now here I am, a PI with little to know legal power and not even protected by my badge anymore. But I still could not shake that feeling; So throwing caution to the wind I started to follow. Slipping my camera around my back and letting its strap do the work of keeping it held in place.

Keeping pace I moved over the from my side of the street to hers and as I moved I could feel that same sense of dread urging me to move faster. Only realizing why when my head turned the corner and saw her familiar form leaned against the buildings cold stone. She was in visible pain and I could see why, from the small trail of red running down the outside of her thigh. I sprang into action and came to her side, but at my slightest touch her body tensed even though she failed to even register I was there. I could see that she was in a certain amount of shock from what had happened to her and I spoke.

"Miss..? Are you Okay..?" I put an arm under hers and placed my hand at her uninjured side in an attempt to alleviate her discomfort for just a moment. But not waiting I knew what had to be done and I got under her arm, not caring for the now growing warm patch forming on my own body. "Come on, you need a hospital." I could tell the wound wasn't very deep by it was bleeding steadily.

The fact that he was so close made me fearful for him. After all, the culprit could still be around. There wasn't really much I could do to get rid of him at this point besides getting him to go away by him own volition.

"I don't need a hospital," I said, knowing it'd be best for him not to be around too long and for me not to be in a place that asked too much information about me due to the fact that I didn't want to risk being caught. I attempted to push him away, only to fail because I was using one of my hands to keep pressure on the wound to stop the bleeding.

This wasn't the first time I'd been attacked in such a way either. This left me a couple of scars that weren't doing me much of a favor with a job that required skin to be exposed, but it had taught me how to dress the wound. It wasn't too bad.

Finally, being able to break free by elbowing him in the side, I turned away. "You....stop following me. I'm not the type you want to associate with. You're putting your life on the line by being anywhere near me. What just happened...it could happen to you too."

I shifted a little, feeling searing pain as I twisted too far to ensure he'd hear me. Even if the wound wasn't too bad, I knew I needed stitches. There was no way this would heal without them. Some painkillers really sounded good at the moment, but I suppressed that thought as I remembered that I was attempting to leave.

"Damn it," I hissed as I tripped. It didn't seem like luck was on my side that night.

The girl tries to leave and pays a slight price as she trips, either from being in shock or not watching where she was going in her haste. I quickly come back to her side and lean down to her "Alight.. nice try, But your going to need to get some help and I don't really care right now what you say." She was most likely talking from another place to keep me away and I really couldn't care less for that in her current state.

Reaching an arm around under hers and my other under her legs I scoop her up before she can right herself, hoping at least that she would forgo fighting back. Even though I have had a few drinks I guess it would be better to take my car now, seeing as time is somewhat against us.

Crossing the street with her in tow I was able to fish the keys out and unlock my car, setting her into the passenger seat and closing the door. I began to really regret my choice in car, seeing as my Chevy lacked a back seat to place her in. However it was quick on the uptake, seeing as I was down the street quickly and I could cover the next six blocks easily.

Looking over she was still gripping the wound to stop the bleeding and so I pointed under her seat.

"There should be a small first aid box with gauze under you, so go ahead and use that for now."

"Thanks," I mumbled, not taking defeat too lightly. I didn't attempt to fight back because I knew we'd both end up a bloody mess, and that would cause a bigger problem. There wasn't really much of a choice for me in the matter.

I pressed the gauze on quite tightly, apologizing before pulling a bit of my shirt up, revealing other scars on the skin surrounding the wound then pulling it back down when I was done finding where to put it. The surrounding area was pretty bloody, but nowhere near as bad as it could've been.

As we got to the hospital, I got out of the car and walked a bit ahead of him, but stopping when I reached the end of the parking lot. I couldn't go in--well, I didn't want to go in. It was a conflicting emotion that arose within me. I knew I should've ran for it and gone home. It wasn't the most comfortable place to go to. In the end, I convinced myself to go before the man forced me to.

I stepped into the waiting room, which was filled with hopelessly ill people, some people with broken limbs, and stuff of the sort. It just made me feel worse about being there. These people were in for worse things than I was.

"Can I just go home? You can forget I ever associated with yiu, if you want," I tried bargaining in the end. I'd run out of solutions at that point.

I walked in not long after the girl, it was still apparent that she didn't really want to be here and I thought for the time being that we should of gone to my loft or her place to treat her. However the time for that decision had passed already and we stood now with all the other ill and waiting, but that was not to say I didn't have a way to get in front of the line.

I give her arm a slight tug as I start to lead her around one of the service doors for ICU patients. The nurse at the desk only taking a moment to realize who I was and then disregarding me entirely. The memory returns now that I am here walking down the cool sterile corridor with a stranger in tow, peeking around corners for one face in particular. "I have a friend who can help you, I just hope she is in tonight." A tinge of pain shoot through my lower back as we both pass the exact room that I was once laid into during my own stay.

Then the face is not far ahead of me.

Carol was a senior resident of the hospital and was the one who treated me during my rehab, though being in her late forties she was still drudging it down here with the other nurses and orderlies.

I stop with this girl in my arm, doing my best to support her if she were to fall unconscious and waited for the moment that Carol would look up at me. She was there ahead in the hall speaking to a man in crutches, the large white cast wrapping his whole leg was obviously the reason for this and as she said her goodbyes she noticed me. This wasn't the first time I've come in so unannounced to need her services and all she did was give a small look around before motioning towards a room for the two of us.

With a measure of haste I brought this girl in with me and helped her up on the beds edge before looking at her. Carol had most likely gone to grab what she needed for helping us as the large red smear was evident enough of what had happened. "Everything is going to be good, my friend is going to fix you up good." I stared her face over for a moment, for some reason I found myself getting lost in the fact of just looking at her. Either it was the wild look in her eyes or the way she carried herself, but I couldn't really look away before I managed to catch myself in the act and ended up speaking to break the awkward silence.

"So... My name is Lucian by the way.. Just in case your wondering" I could just taste the tension in the air, then again it was most likely the hospital to blame for that in the first place.

He was being kind to me. How strange, and a stranger at that. I almost asked him if he had some ulterior motive but stopped myself, knowing it wouldn't be appropriate to ask and doubting it was the case anyway.

Hospitals made me uneasy. They were places that held too many dying and sometimes dead people. Just breathing the air in made me feel sick. Perhaps those who were in need of long-term treatment found those places to be quite likeable. I didn't.

Once he set me on the bed, I wished to fight to at least to be able to sit on my own, but I couldn't find it in myself to do so. There were too many defeats that had occurred in one day to give me the desire to keep fighting, even for the small things like my petty desire to always do things on my own.

I nodded as he spoke. "My name is Ana," I said in a rather plain tone. The man at least deserved to be responded to for the help he'd given me. I fidgeted uneasily as he looked at me, but didn't feel it was threatening, so I let him do so. "Thank you...you didn't have to help."

It was then that the doctor came in, poking me around and doing some other tests. I didn't really try to move around too much until my shirt was pulled away and my wound was being dressed. I didn't like it, and I was pretty sure the doctor could tell by the words escaping my mouth and the fact that I moved every time she tried to go near me.

"A little help?" The words were directed towards two nurses that came to hold me down almost immediately as the doctor injected what I assumed to be a local anesthetic due to the fact that numbing quickly spread.

Once it was over, I was tired, having fought with the nurses a little too hard for their liking. The stitches in my side would probably start hurting after the anesthesia wore off.

I look at the process go by as Carol comes in and starts to do her thing.

It was easy to see that Ana couldn't handle what was going on, either by being touched like that or by the pain.

I sighed as I watched and recalled everything that happened to me the night I came in after my accident. After it was all done I pulled Carol aside for a moment. "Thanks for the help and all doc, but could you have gone a little easier?" She looked back at me and tilted her head. "Sorry Lucien but we are packed tonight and the Chief would have caught us if I had taken too long. I swear this city is going down the drain quicker then ever."

I nod a little as she goes back to the curtain and checks her corners before looking back. "I trust that you can make it out of here with little problems.. oh and she needs to take two of these tonight, then again in the morning." She tosses me a small medical bottle containing four small yellow pills. Painkillers is the first thought that comes into my mind, that or something to help with infection or the such.

Leaning down I lend an arm to Ana and look her over slightly before speaking.
"Alright I think its time I got you home, lets get back to the car."

I simply nodded at his comment. In the end, I didn't know what else to say to the man that had helped me--I didn't even know if I should've said something. Normal conversation was still not within my range of abilities, and having someone with me for an extended period of time didn't help, as I got uneasy again once we walked outside.

I was very watchful, but still doubted anyone would've followed me this far. It'd be rather stupid.

Getting in the car, I sighed. I was unsuccessful in my own endeavors, and didn't think it'd be a good idea to go try again for a while. I would at least stop for long enough not to reopen the cut. I didn't need to go to a hospital again.

I told Lucian where I lived, maintaining a kind tone whenever I spoke to him. He seemed like a good person.

"What do you work as?" I finally asked, attempting to be somewhat social and break the silence. It seemed like a good place to start some sort of conversation. Besides, I'd been curious about it since I saw the way he was dressed and wondered what could've kept him so late into the night.

As I put the car in gear I began to pull out of the parking lot.

She asked me about my job, which I must say was somewhat of an understandable question. She had my name and I guess it was only natural to figure out what I did. Though it was obvious that she was still at an unease about having a conversation in general.

"Well I mostly work as a detective, though now its mostly just considered being called a private eye." I work the words in my mouth a bit trying to get over the fact I just told her I snoop into other peoples lives for a living. Though that does explain why I was so willing to approach and help her, which settles in my mind better the longer that I think about it.

What was really heavy on my mind was why she was out there on the street at night. She couldn't have been working the street, because she didn't have the exact look and she was far too aloof for such interaction. She must have been waiting on something or someone out there and apparently it found her first by the looks of things. But still I couldn't ask something so direct of her right now. I just made a slight gesture as I pointed on ahead and spoke "This should be your block coming up."

I nodded, keeping a casual air about the conversation. It surprised me when he said we had almost arrived, as I stopped paying attention to the surrounding area after a while.

"Thanks for everything. Have a good night." And with that, I got off. It was almost as if nothing had occurred that day, being in the apartment again. Everything looked the same. The next morning, I would wake up and go through the same routine again.

The man interested me. He seemed like he had many different stories to tell. I set of wanted to meet him once more.

I watched her climb out of my car and up the stairs to her apartment, disappearing from view, but not from my mind.
The thought of her stayed with me as I made the way back to my own place and I found myself wondering about her. I can usually see through someone right off the bat, which was why I became a detective in the first place. However this girl confounded me and made my mind question the decision to even let her go home alone in the very least.

That night as I sat in my living room and sipped the last of my cup of coffee I made the decision to return to the bar again. In search of not only her, but the reason she was out there in the first place.

So after a shower and downloading my pictures, I retreated to my bed for the rest of the night despite it being three in the morning. My next trip will be a more prepared venture as I return and hopefully I can get a few more answers then before.

The next day, I woke up with the images from the previous night swarming into my mind. The killer, Lucian, and everything.

I wasn't ready to fight after the previous night. It'd been too surprising to see that a person was able to make me fall in their trap. I needed more preparation. Maybe I should've been like the first few days I searched. I was watchful, and reacted quickly.

For the night, I decided to wander into the city. If I got caught, then there wasn't much I could do, but I was willing to risk it. I dressed normally for once, hoping it was enough to avoid excessive attention. It was rather cool outside, so I grabbed a hoodie before walking out.

In the midst of my wandering, I came across a bar and stood there, wondering if it would be a good idea to walk in. After a few minutes, I decided that, since I had some extra money, I would go at it.
