Welcome to the fallout, baby.
Pieced together over the course of a century following the big bast, the Commonwealth has something for anyone. Come to The Valley for some of the best noodles in the commonwealth. Or if you’re thirsty, you can usually find a nuka cola around somewhere - though if you want something harder to drink you’ll have to go to your local watering hole. They’ve got spirits of your choosing, though don’t set your expectations too high. If you don’t have any rad-away to treat your radiation, you can usually find a doctor (or someone doctor-adjacent) who can fix you right up - so long as you’ve got the bottlecaps for it.

Marlo has taken over the Commonwealth, all major cities are under his control. While there are smaller settlements that operate autonomously, they pay a heavy tax to do so – and only have been able to remain so by never bucking against Marlo’s demands. He made enough examples over the years out of those who tried to challenge him, the people knew better than to try.

Lately there’s been whispers of an outlier. Rumored to have been a former adversary of Marlo himself, there was little to be known of Sawyer. Many weren’t even sure if that was their real name, just what people started calling them. Their followers have been infiltrating the Commonwealth, spreading the gospel.

The Commonwealth

The Valley

Known for its tech, it’s one of the most advanced cities. Droids co-exist with humans here, though ghouls are not welcomed. It’s strict radiation protocol makes it one of the safest cities within the Commonwealth, though many disagree with the age-old decision to keep ghouls out. Anyone coming into the city has to go through an entire process, including showering and changing into a sanctioned coverall in a color of your choice. You’re allowed to wear any clothes you brought with once you’re in the city, but you have to wait a couple days to be able to pick them up from Customs. Most people are in and out enough they just end up wearing the coveralls most days anyways. There’s always work to be found scavenging, either for the city or the engineers residing within. While there’s a central market with the standard tech market stuff (prosthetic appendages, communication devices, weapon upgrades), there was a saying in the Valley. β€œIf you could dream it, someone in the Valley could build it.” The city is filled with brilliant minds, though recently most of them have been pressured to work under Marco’s command. Rumor has it they’re helping him build some super weapon, against what no one is sure. His people have infested the city for years now, never relenting their grip over the massive city. They police the town inconsistently and with discrimination, though for the most part if you kept your head down and kissed their ass when they spoke to you - the left you alone.

Marlo’s Compound

Surrounded by 6 ft tall concrete walls and barbed wire, it had been a maximum security prison in it’s previous life. Some parts of the building had crumbled from the initial blast, but the majority of it was still intact. Marlo and his inner circle lived within what was previously the administrative offices. Given that the prison was also using the prisoners for labor, there were many spaces that they were able to utilize post-nukes. What was previously a packaging plant is now where they intake β€œtaxes” from other settlements tallying up their total haul and recording those numbers. The cafeteria and kitchen was it’s own restaurant and bar. Since they had access to the best ingredients and the most variety, it was certain there’d always be something good to eat here. Most of the cells has been converted into residencies, though the isolation cells retain their previous function.

Marlo’s Company

Ran by none other than Marlo himself. Sociopathic doesn’t even begin to cover it. He delighted in terror. His people weren’t that different, though none could ever keep up to the amount of cruelty that Marlo demonstrated. After nearly a decade of him conquering one city after the next, finally he has rule of the Commonwealth. His people are in every major city, trading post and β€œre education camps” - though the inhabitants preferred to call it for what it was, prisons. There was no settlement, small or large that wasn’t indebted to Marlo. His people terrorized the commonwealth, taking what they pleased and challenging anyone into provoking them into a fight they were sure to lose.

Leader There is no question about it, the name is in the title. MARLO’s Company. Ruled with his iron fist, there is no room for questioning his authority. As the conqueror of the Commonwealth, there is no anonymity in the name. Everyone is well aware of the one and only Marlo.

Right Hand The only individual rumored to be able to disagree with Marlo and live. The rumor is they grew up together, though there is debate as to whether Marlo had ever been a child at all. Previously much of Harvey’s job included visiting settlement to settlement, reaching out to them on behalf of Marlo asking them to put down their guns and allow the company to come in without resistance.

Soldiers These were the henchmen, the minions, the one who relished in Marlo’s grisly delights. Though things had been still lately, many of them still get their kicks by roaming the land stirring up trouble. They usually return to the compound eventually, though some are stationed at different settlements to act as police.

Labor Worker Usually a role assigned to those as punishment, sometimes the treatment going on indefinitely. They do the bulk dirty work around the compound, many of them having people they love used against them to keep them on a leash.

Prisoners These are usually individuals used as emotional collateral against those who had displeased Marlo. Their situation varies from a shitty cell where they got one meal a day, or sharing a bed with one of Marlo’s minions. Either way, it’s out of reach of their loved ones. Some of them don’t even know they’re prisoners, unless they try to get away - which gets them landed in the aforementioned shitty cell.

The Glowing Sea

Located beyond the borders of the commonwealth, the glowing sea is a wasteland of radiation. Only those forced into isolation end up there. Without any protection, you will slowly waste away. Known for giving off a greenish glow that stretches as far as the eye can see, it is beautiful in it’s own strange way. Unbeknownst to many, there is an old vault within the glowing sea that remains untouched by the radiation.

Vault 127

Located within the Glowing Sea, it was originally used as a botany research facility and pharmaceuticals. When it was rediscovered years later, the labs were transitioned into farms so that they could grow their own food. It came with a state-of-the-art medical center, along with a lab where one could make any type of first aid concoction, or more likely - some chems. There are droids that used to aid the botanist in the research that have been reprogrammed to tend to the farm themselves, as well as ones that have been reprogrammed to provide medical care or even manage the local watering hole. Still housing most of its original furniture, it came with plenty of bunk beds to house it’s residents. Most folks like with 7-11 other roommates, though they try to keep families together. Completely self-sufficient, they’re the only asset beyond Marlo’s control

The Faction

Shrouded in mystery, they’re more legend than reality. Led by the elusive Sawyer, the followers refer to them as more of a prophet than a person. Believing to have originally been founded within the Glowing Sea, it is mostly made up of outcasts. Then slowly, one by one, followers of The Faction would pop up whispering about some supposed heroes who were going to take back the Commonwealth for the people.

Leader Their identity is shrouded in secrecy, not even civilians or truth-sayers are privy. Referred to as Sawyer in the abstract, some imagine it as some dark figure roaming the Commonwealth whispering back reports and wreaking havoc. The mystery around their leader is one of their greatest tools, if one can not make out the head of the snake - they can not cut it off.

Right Hand Seen by many as the true leader of the faction, though that is by design. Some believe the right hand is actually Sawyer themselves, though those within the inner circle know the truth.

Fighters By no means just soldiers. They are not pawns just fighting someone else’s war. They believe in the Faction and it’s cause. Many of them had suffered at the hand of Marlos Company themselves, or were forced to flee their homes hunted by his people. They have a shared purpose and deep rooted values, giving them something larger than themselves to fight for. Many of the feats you hear claimed to Sawyer were accomplished by the fighters within The Faction.

Engineers The brilliant minds behind the operation. What started as a few scrappy techs reprogramming some droids to use around the vault turned into its own department. Weapons upgrades became defaulted to them, since they had the bulk of the supplies - though some people preferred to mod their weapons themselves.

Civilians Many of Marlo’s victims are just normal, defenseless average people. The ones who lived quiet lives within their settlement and liked it that way. When the company came knocking at the door, many would flee. With his numbers growing, those wishing to live on the fringe got pushed further and further out. The faction began reaching out to these civilians, offering them shelter within the vault.

Truth Sayers These are followers of the Faction who wish to spread the word. They are found lurking in your local bar, usually just passing through on their way onto the next place telling grand stories about Sawyer and the Faction.

Sawyer

More of a concept than a person. Defined as the leader of the Faction, their feats read like a rap sheet. A name to represent the collective actions of the Faction, it evolved from the phrase β€œI saw her”. A rogue woman who long ago had roamed the Commonwealth, sowing chaos and redistributing wealth. It’s rumored that she was a member of the faction. Eventually people began to repeat the name β€œSawyer”, the Faction knew better than to try to turn their back on free PR.

Her shift began at seven, but of course Bianca was late. Slightly dishelved, she was still a sight for sore eyes. Her honey blonde hair was thrown into a messy updo, her roots just barely darkened from the new growth. The only make up she bothered with was mascara and a sweep of gloss, unlike her usual full set that showed obvious time and care. The ascot around her remained untied, the top button of her uniform undone, her blazer closed. And although her skirt was zipped with her white button down tucked in, the fabric couldn't resist to rise up her hips as she walked causing her hemline to rise. Once her loafers hit the stone floor of the main lobby of Hotel Colony, Bianca knew she was in for an earful.

"Fifteen minutes." Yolanda's firm voice spoke as Bianca took her place behind the front desk, fixing the handkerchief around her neck neatly as she smiled at a couple as they walked out, nodding cordially.

"I'm very aware Yolanda, my bus was late." Which wasn't entirely a lie, but she had hit snooze a few times more than she would have liked to admit. The night had lasted long at Club Riches with shot after shot and a fantastic deejay. It had taken two cups of coffee and scrambled eggs just for her to change out of her pajamas. But somehow she managed to get there only fifteen minutes late, which she considered no small feat.

Yolanda sighed, "I had to take charge of the front desk, Mitchel had to go pick up his kids. Your tardiness resulted in me having to abandon my responsibilities and...." Already her attention was elsewhere, organizing the guest book and assorted paperwork that Yolanda had strewn around while rummaging in Bianca's absence. "...you need to start taking your responsibilities seriously." Yolanda said with finality, looking at the now polished Bianca expectantly.

Batting her lashes, Bianca just nodded, "Alright, ma'am don't worry it won't happen again." She took her seat behind the monitor, as if dismissing Yolanda from the front desk. Murmuring under her breath about tardiness, the manager went about her way leaving Bianca at her station.

Pursing her lips, Bianca leaned into her chair, crossing her legs neatly and looking across the main lobby to the double doors that led into ocean drive. Through the pane she could see those who walked past, peering into the Hotel with curiosity. The day had begun for Bianca, and it was time for her to be attentive to he duties, as Yolanda would put it.

The moment the rays of the sun slipped through the blinds and onto his eyes, Cassus opened them. Leisurely, he sat up, looking around his room. It was neat, orderly. He could spot the tell-tale signs that gave away his hiding places: the small, ornate bookcase he had purchased and filled with a variety of books, classic and modern, a few of them hiding precious secrets he had picked up in the Miami underworld, the loose floorboard that hid his box of tools and weapons, and two separate wine racks: one with wine and liquor bottles containing poison, the other with bottles containing the antidotes.

Truthfully, he had gotten good. Too good. He began with taking out street rat and other low-lifes like himself for other scumbags slightly higher up the criminal hierarchy. Then he bumped off bigger fish: rogue gang leaders and mafia family members, a few cops, and moles with enough information and former rank to warrant their deaths before they could seal their deal with the cops. Eventually it extended to foreign criminals, politicians, certain people the Communist government in Cuba wanted dead, the powerful wealthy who thought themselves untouchable.

When it came down to it, there were too many powerful factions that wanted him to work for them and them alone and if he didn't, they'd make sure he was dead so he could not harm them. It had been time to go underground. Of course, most assumed that he had fled town or the country. None expected him to be hiding out in a hotel of all places.

Cassus began his morning routine. He showered, brushed his teeth, did fifty push-ups, fifty sit-ups, and fifty jumping jacks in conjunction with some stretches to liven his body up. He strapped on a kevlar vest before dressing himself in dark, expensive, but unassuming clothes. He slipped out of his hotel room and fastened the custom locks he had purchased before making his way to the Lobby.

Bianca was sitting at her usual place, but lacked her usual impeccable appearance. Still, her dishelved manner couldn't hide her beauty. He suspected that her top button was undone purposefully, but he was unsure if she was wearing a skirt too small for her on purpose or if she had hurriedly picked it out this morning. He smiled at her in greeting as he passed her by, noting her hair.

"Still blonde today, bella?" he asked her lightly as he made his way to the dining hall for breakfast. In his experience, dye jobs were too bothersome to maintain in the long-term. One had to keep dying the roots or risk exposure. Of course, he had told her that her natural hair colors was much prettier.

Without another word, he made his way to the dining hall. They were having a breakfast buffet, as always, and he loaded a plate with eggs, lean bacon, toast, and some fruit before taking his seat. At his table, like the other tables, was a pitcher of cool ice water, which he poured into a glass before biting into a strawberry. Eventually, a waitress came by asking if he wanted to drink in addition to his water and he requested a pot of ginseng tea.

Life was good, if a bit boring.

"So, Mr. Costa, did you knowingly have your brother and his gang set fire to the Esperanza restaurant a month ago? As well as Costa's Stone Crab and The Capital Grille in order to repay the dealers he was indebted to?"

"Uh...no, no detective! I swear on my mother's grave I did not! Like I have told you, I have made sure to keep my brother at arms length from me! He is no brother to me anymore!"

"Anymore? Oh really eh? Well you'd better take a look at this then."

Detective Mallory Lanning smoothly pulled out his iPhone, pulled up his photo app and showed the text message to Xavier Costa, who was sitting directly across from him. The radiant morning sun was just coming up over Miami and the Greenstreet Cafe was beginning to fill with customers and busy commuters on their way to work.

"That's your brother's number, right? Seven Eight Six, Three Five Zero, Two Eight Zero One?" He leaned back in his chair and gestured quotations with his hands: "I mean surely you weren't talking about 'lighting up' your barbecue were you?" He guffawed. "Like who buys 50 gallons of propane just for kicks, eh?"

Xavier's shaven head was clearly glistening with sweat, and he began to get noticably irritated, his barrel-chest and hoarse voice straining after years of smoking. Although he was short and burly, and not the sort you'd want to take on in a fight, his usual menacing facade was beginning to crack. "Listen! I didn't do it! It was Lucho! That bastard's been out to get me and destroy my business-"

Mallory cut him off and leaned forward, his hands folded and his blue eyes burning lasers through Xavier. "Then tell me the real story, Xavier. Because right now my story seems to be holding up better than yours."

"It was him I swear! He did it! Why do you think I would go and just blow up my own restaurant that I've spent the last year and a half working my ass off to set it up!?"

"Because if you didn't, your brother would burned down your restaurant." Mallory said icily, pausing for effect to let it sink in: "With you inside."

"But-"

"There's nothing more to it, Mr. Costa. The paper trail is incriminating. You're convieniently missing 75 grand a week before the first fire, which hasn't been accounted for and interestingly enough was never checked by your accountant or any of your financial staff. Who happened to reveal to me that they had been given some extra cash for the weekend by their boss if they were to keep their mouth shut and carry on business as usual."

"No I-"

"Need I say more? I can go on for hours!"

"But wait, please just-"

"Excuse me, Mr. Costa, I need to take a phone call."

Mallory gave him a short smile before getting out his chair, turning away from him and striding to the door of the cafe. He tapped his wireless earpiece and said "Constable, this man is guilty of insurance fraud. Do what you do best and reel him in." Mallory stopped at the door and turned, looking back on Xavier one last time. "Oh, and if he gets sappy on you just grab some napkins off of the till there, wouldn't want any crocodile tears on that new uniform of yours would we?" Before turning to leave, he looked back the other way to the far opposite corner where a skinny man and a robust, scantily clad woman were chatting and dining quietly. He made eye contact with the woman, and winked.

As he walked by the cafe back to his blue-steel coloured Chevy Impala, he glanced through the window, where he saw Xavier Costa being held to the table face down by the skinny man, who was putting handcuffs on him. The woman was dabbing his face with napkins. Mallory grinned. Case closed.

Despite being up for almost 24 hours, Mallory was still looking fresh. He wore an indigo-blue dress shirt and beige khakis, both crisply ironed to perfection with the top of his shirt left unbuttoned. His hair was in a crew cut with the sides tapered and a little more of his dirty blonde hair short on top. A pair of black loafers put some extra swing in his step as he walked to his vehicle parked in the adjacent parking lot. A couple of ladies passing by gave him salacious looks and watched him unlock the door and slip inside. He shut the door, put the key in the ignition and laid back against the seat, exhaling deeply. He'd done it. Another case, open and closed. It was always a feeling that you had to savour in this line of work-the mystery solved, the last piece of the puzzle put in its place. Mallory loved his new job. It's what keeps him going. Well, and one other thing. He pulled out his phone and selected "Mel" from his contacts and adjusted his earpiece.

"Hey Mel." He said, trying to keep the excitement out of his voice.

"Hey honey! You cracked the case didn't you?"

"How did you know?"

Melanie Lanning giggled. "You sound way too giddy at quarter after eight in the morning."

Mallory laughed, "Yeah, we got him. Luckily because of the way he treated his employees and how bad he was at leaving a false paper trail."

"Criminals are just as stupid as they are in the movies, hey Mal?"

"The ones I've met so far certainly are, dear."

The anxiety in Melanie's tone suddenly increased. "So you are taking a few days off like I've told you to, right?"

Mallory sighed. A somewhat conflicted sigh. "Yes, I will. Manny's gonna go after this guy's brother for the gang stuff he's been into. Better nip 'em in the bud before he causes any more havoc. Are you on shift?"

He sensed that her anxiousness decreased. "I'll be at the hospital until 7 tonight. And afterward I'm taking you out to dinner. You deserve it, champ."

"That would be lovely. I gotta get going, need to grab some coffee and finish up some of this paperwork at the office-"

"I should just strap you to the bed with those handcuffs of yours so you don't have to do paperwork, why didn't I think of that before?" Melanie joked salaciously.

"As long as I'm strapped to it with you", Mallory reciprocated.

She laughed again. "We'll see. I left you some lunch on the counter at home. I have to go."

"I love you."

"I love you too. Don't work too hard."

"Will do." and with that, Mallory hung up.

He drove along southbound Bayshore Drive, basking in the sun which had risen farther up, illuminating the immense blue sky and the ocean below. As he drove, he thought about how different his life was since two years ago. In short, it was markedly different. Although his stint as a secret agent had taken its toll, Mallory had come out reasonably intact compared to many of his other comrades. As he drove, along the coast, gazing across the waterfront and Biscayne Bay, he couldn't help but think of his friend Sanjay. Not a simply a friend, but the best friend that Mallory had ever had. A man of character, dedication, and humour that kept Mallory lively and with a soul during the war. A man that he'd spent countless hours chumming around with, whether it be in the deserts of Afghanistan, or back home in the ports of Halifax racing the boats they'd built together. They were going to save the world, Sanjay and Mallory. But, Mallory thought, they couldn't even save themselves. He quickly shook his head, taking in multiple deep breaths to avoid thinking of it more or worse, a flashback.

He parked further down Ocean Drive and walked his way over to Hotel Colony. Ever since he'd performed the sting operation five months ago, Mallory always noticed something new about the place when he walked up to it. This time, it was the shrubs that encircled some of the palm trees flanking the building. In this line of work, thought Mallory, the little details make a big difference.

He glided in through the front door into the lobby, heading for the front desk and going to hang a right toward the convenience store. Since the sting operation here at the Hotel, he'd made a point to help the hotel out a little by doing his part and buying his morning coffee here. In fact, it was in that convenience store that he'd gotten the suspected gang members to discreetly fess up, before Miami SWAT came through and locked the place down. So he didn't mind stopping in, and he much preferred helping out a local business than the numerous multinationals around town. He quickly recognized Bianca sitting at the desk, as she mostly always was, her elegant fingers tapping away at the keyboard in front of her. The difference in her appearance today was stark to Mallory. She looked rather disarrayed with her hair looking like a messy hornets nest and much less make up than Mallory believed was possible on her. Regardless, he appreciated the new look. Maybe she's changing her style, he joked to himself.

"How many shots did you have last night? I'm willing to wager twenty dollars on a number greater than ten." He rested his elbows on the front counter and paused to let her look up from her screen and then added: "Good morning, Biaa."

Afterward, he stopped in at the store, nodding to the clerk, who gave him a brief " 'morning Jim", and set the coffee machine to brew. He waited, glancing around the store and the interior of the lobby as he normally did while he waited. He paid for his morning sustenance while making small talk and then strolled over to the large window overlooking the beach through the trees, sipping his cappuccino and quietly observing the view.

The pace in the morning was always slow, tedious tasks and having to pause to nod and greet whomever walked past. The hours were long at Hotel Colony, but the pay was good and the benefits came in handy. As a little girl she remembered passing the hotel on long bike rides along Ocean Shore. It had always had a certain magical essence that made her drawn to the place. In a way it had become a home to her, a place that offered stability and discipline for the first time in her life.

Plus the people weren't so bad either, staff as well as guests. She hadn't even heard Cassus approach her desk until he spoke, "Still blonde today, bella?", startling her.

He was an extremely stealthy person, she had noticed. On more than one occasion he had caught her unexpecting, jumping at his voice. This time she had only flinched, smiling at herself with amusement. "Scared the hell out of me again, Cassus - at this rate I'll be gray before I go back to brown and it'll all be your fault." She said with an accusing tone, believing she heard a laugh before he disappeared around the corner.

Her fingers pushed aside stray hairs that had curled up along her hairline, squinting her hazel eyes at the computer monitor as she moved the cursor across the screen. The good thing about having monotonous tasks that seemed to flow one right into another was that time passed fast. She knew it was almost eight when Detective Mallory came in for his morning coffee. Of course he called her out on her hangover, not that she had made it too hard with her appearance. Their banter was all in good fun, the man was a charm and Bianca couldn't help but to be friendly in return. "You got me, Detective." She said with much chagrin as he walked on, her smile tentative on her lips.

But as most of the guests did, he too had been just a fleeting moment of socialization in her rather dull morning. It was like being on autopilot, allowing her mind to roam. Firstly to last night, making her wince at the recollection that everyone had been taking body shots, running their tongue across her abdomen as they slurped tequila that had been poured into her naval, plucking a lime from her mouth. Alcohol brought out the worst in her, she had decided. It got to the point where she thought of creating an alter ego to take blame for all her drunken decisions. In the end it was fun, but the guilt of her father boasting of how as a single dad he brought up a beautiful well rounded nice girl while she ran around with her group of girls hopping club to club sometimes made her regret those crazy nights.

To Bianca her father was everything, she wanted nothing to do with her mothers new family - she would just feel like a puzzle piece that didn't fit. It was her and Fernando against the world, for more than half her life. In time Bianca knew she would retire from the club scene, at a certain point it would just be pathetic to continue. But for now she would work until something better came along she supposed. Sometimes she would panic about where she was going with her life, confused about what she wanted to do. As well as she as doing for herself now, there had to be something more to her life than pushing paper work.

The sound of bells chiming indicating that someone was entering the lobby caught her attention, a man dressed in casual clothes - a baseball cap pulled low so the visor hid his eyes. Immediately Bianca stood, because of hotel policy hats were not allowed so that camera's could register the faces of those who passed through. "Hello sir, welcome to Hotel Colony - could I please just ask you to remove your cap." Her formal tone had a certain type of peppiness that she only used when on the job, usually opting for ebonics and a casual demeanor.

The man didn't seem the least bit pleased about her greeting, his hand not even so much as twitching to remove his cap. "Sir, I'm going to have to ask you again to remove your cap."

He was walking toward her, and as his jacket shifted from his hip, Bianca saw the familiar glint of gunmetal holstered on his hip. Her first move was to click the panic button beneath her desk, then backing away from her station as if the space between them could protect her. Her eyes never left the man, who still remained silent. The guests had cleared the lobby, either going to their rooms or on their way out. It felt like the whole world continued to move around herself and this unidentified man, oblivious to the danger.

When he spoke, it came out more as a hiss as he leaned across her desk. "I won't hurt you, if you help me." She remained frozen, her eyes blank as she nodded slightly. He continued, "I need you to direct me to Dr. Hilger."

Dr. Hilger, Bianca wasnt even sure if the man was here. He and his wife would constantly be in a battle, the Colony hotel turned into a second home for him as a result. He was a stout yet geniune man who held a certain twinkle in his eye. Bianca had heard of deranged family members of deceased one sometimes gunning down the doctor they believed was to blame for their relatives death, but Bianca couldn't imagine anyone wanting to kill Dr. Hilger.

Mistaking her silence for resistance, the man shifted aside the fabric to rest his hand over his gun, jolting Bianca to life. "I don't even know if he's here, I just started my shift!" She blurted, choking back sobs of terror. Gesturing toward her computer, the man lifted the rim of his cap so that she could see his cold eyes staring her down. Trembling, Bianca took two deliberate steps to her monitor, looming over the key board as she typed - eyes pacing from the man to her computer screen. Every move was slow and deliberate, waiting for help to arrive.

It was useless, the man was smarter than she had given him credit for. He remained attentive, looking behind him in case someone were to sneak up on him. It wasnt until he saw a glimpse of the flashing lights outside that he reacted. "Damn you bitch!" He said, withdrawing his gun.

Bianca looked up, panicked. The man gave her no reaction time as he hopped over the desk, grabbing a handful of her hair to pull her close then wrapping his arm across her shoulders, putting pressure against her jugular. She managed a squeal before she felt the cool metal press into the small of her back. "Shut the fuck up, you brought this onto yourself." He said calmly, his voice low.

Petrified, Bianca recoiled into his hold, attempting to appear harmless. "I didn't call the police, I swear. You've been watching me this whole time...I told you to remove your hat...security probably called." Desperate to make herself innocent, she began to rattle off excuses, squirming under his hold. It was then that a voice could be heard from outside, amplified somehow.

"This is the police, we have you surrounded. Come up with your hands up and nobody has to get hurt."

She couldn't help to roll her eyes, they weren't very convincing. Bianca had called the police to protect herself, but all it had done was further compromised her position. The man sneered, whispering into her ear. "Now see you've just turned yourself into my little bargaining chip." A shiver ran down her spine.

Mallory sipped his coffee quietly, sitting at one of the chairs facing the window of the store. The warm caffeine mixture soothed him and attuned his senses. Feeling much more alert, he glanced at his watch. It was time to go and finish up for the day. With any luck, he'd be home around lunch and he'd hit the bed for the rest of the afternoon, and by then the evening would roll around. He was looking forward to dinner. He'd been decently busy for the past two weeks especially, interviewing leads and gathering evidence from the sites of the fires. In between all of that he'd had very little time to see his other half, who worked 12 hour shifts alternating day and night. Often as Mallory would come home from a hard day's work, Melanie would be in her scrubs and stepping out the door. Fortunately, they frequently had the weekends together. But either way, When duty calls, thought Mallory, we answer.

And then, just like that, something put Mallory on high alert. He heard it first. The panic alarm. From the main lobby. The harried footsteps of people leaving out of the door. Quickly. As though they're getting away from something. Standing from his seat he witnessed two Miami Beach police interceptors whiz by, hanging a left to go to...the hotel lobby!

Mallory took his coffee with him, exiting the store and sliding into position behind a large marble pillar directly across from the front desk. His jaw dropped when he saw it: a man wearing a baseball cap holding a Glock 22 to Bianca's head. Bianca sure needs to stop telling people to take their hats off , he mused to himself.

Immediately his mind went into Special Forces mode: scanning the sightlines, places for cover, Bianca and her assailant's position, and all of the other relevant infomation that would be necessary to formulate a plan. He glanced down at the coffee cup in his hands. Perfect. He had a plan. He reached into his...

Wait a minute. Where's my gun?

He gasped in horror as his trusty Sig Sauer P226 pistol was not in its usual place, hugging his waist. Doggone it! I forget my gun on the one bloody day I actually need it! What are the odds of that?!

Tapping his earpiece gently, he scanned the lobby again. The police were, as he expected, four minutes late. As usual. They also started with their usual opening play; try and talk the guy into coming out and just "getting along" with everyone. Happy happy. It was the sort of thing that made Mallory scratch his head. If people were like that, would we have criminals at all?

"Manny, this is Jim. I'm in the middle of a situation at Hotel Colony. What's your position?"

"I'm in one of the interceptors outside. What's the deal, man?"

"This wacko's got one of the receptionists at gunpoint. I'm gonna throw him a distraction and see if he bites. Get your guys to come around the back door through receiving on the north side, I'll signal you when ready."

"Roger that, brother. We're coming through."

He didn't know how long Bianca, or her attacker would hold up. Taking a deep breath, he suppressed everything else on his mind.
I'm here, in the now. I've got a job to do, and do it right, I will.

He glanced at the far side of the lobby, where he could see his partner, Detective Manuel Vasquez, in position. They made eye contact. Mallory held up his coffee cup as though he was toasting his friend. In one quick movement, he cocked his arm back and let it fly.

Two suitcases and a large cardboard box. If one discounted the box, it was exactly the same amount of luggage that she'd first arrived in Miami with. Rose didn't quite know how to think about that. Her business had been running for a year, and it wasn't a bad year at all. No, her clothes were coming into vogue, and she had such a wide variety of customers looking for custom made prom dresses and off the rack party frocks... That fire had snatched it all away from her.Β

The police were good to her, even if they hadn't caught the culprits. Undoubtedly they were a little... thrown by a woman who dressed like she still lived in the age before colour television and who spoke with a funny British accent, claiming that her clothes shop, stocking similar clothing to what she wore, had burnt to a cinder and she had no idea who, what or why it had happened. But good manners, three dozen freshly baked muffins and a nicely fitted skirt helped to make a good impression. Still, Rosie mused, stealing a glance at the box in her brother's arms, it could have been a hell of a lot worse. She was alive, nobody was seriously hurt and she'd been running low on supplies. Her order had arrived three days ago, at her brother's hotel room.Β

"...And your sister wants you to Skype her in the morning. I don't know if she meant morning here, in London or in... Where ever the hell she is... Africa somewhere..."

"Johannesburg?"

"Er, yes, I think that's it." Eddie Ellison frowned thoughtfully, backing through the doors of the hotel lobby. The resemblance between brother and sister was obvious; dark hair, similar features, and silvery grey eyes, now hidden behind sunglasses.Β
That was where similarities ended. Eddie was dressed in black trousers and jacket, his white shirt untucked and the top two buttons undone and a bad case of bedhead. His little sister on the other hand, was prim and proper as always, the front of her hair pinned up into two neat victory rolls, the rest waved and loose around her shoulders and her make-up simple and perfectly applied. She'd spent the better part of fifteen years perfecting her look; she expected nothing less of herself.

Rosie checked in at the desk, but her brother being her brother, insisted on carrying up the box of fabrics to the room with her, fussing over the room and generally worrying about nothing. It took her a full twenty minutes to talk him around and coax him back down into the lobby. They said their goodbyes with an embrace and a final warning that if he didn't leave soon, he would miss his flight, and possibly his future sister in law's wedding.Β

Rose watched him leave with a bemused smile, and ignoring several strange glances from other guests, decided to grab something a little more substantial than a cup of coffee and a mini muffin for breakfast. Β
She was completely oblivious to the brewing commotion in the lobby until she saw the flashing lights and heard a scream. She turned around to see what the fuss was about, and suddenly the Brit found herself frozen to the spot.Β

Her brain, the entire logical, rational side of her was screaming at her to run, but her feet simply refused to comply. Instead her hands rose slowly to her mouth in horror. A real freaking gun.Β
"Ohmygod." It was a whisper, an unintentional statement that barely made it past Rose's lips. This was the kind of thing that happened on the news, a thousand miles away or on TV.Β What on earth could she do? Her mind was completely blank. Β Not here, not now. She heard the police outside, seemingly as pathetic sounding as they were on TV.Β

One, two steps backward. The click of her shoe against resounded like a clap of thunder in Rosie's mind.Β

Something caught her eye, a man tossing something at the gunman. Rose released a smal squeak of fear

What wa hr playing at?

Cassus was just concluding with his his breakfast when he heard a commotion in the lobby. He heard a scream and he instantly noted that it belonged to Bianca. He sighed slightly as he got up from his place and reached beneath his clothes. Depending on the situation, he'd need a knife, a gun, a type of poison, cyanide capsule, or money. He'd have to see what it was. He passed by a girl transfixed by the scene and proceeded to take it in.

Bianca had been taken hostage. Sirens were echoing outside, but they would be too late if the hostage-taker panicked. Bianca had obviously pressed the panic button, but had been burned by that particular action. There was a grim-looking fellow eying the situation behind a marble pillar. He was obviously trained well, but more than was normal for a police officer, though he wouldn't scratch the possibility just yet. He glanced at the hostage taker, not too surprised he recognized him. He took a step forward.

"Joey? You're fucked. You've fucked yourself pretty hard here," Cassus stated simply. The man relaxed slightly, but eyed Cassus suspiciously.

"Cassus? What are you doing here?"

"What does it look like I'm doing, I'm relaxing. What are you doing here? Taking a hostage in broad daylight? Let me guess, you panicked when she told you take off your hat and decided to hold her at gunpoint, betting on the slim chance she'd be able to point you in the direction of your mark and she wouldn't call the cops after you left or, if you disposed of her, someone wouldn't noticed the body in time," Cassus analyzed coolly. Joey was never that bright.

"Hey, I was told to do this," he began, but a cup struck him. He cursed, letting Bianca go as another officer raised a gun. Shots rang out, barely missing both of them. Cassus sighed and gripped a knife beneath his coat.

"It would be better for you to surrender."

"I... No way man. Sorry, but I have to do this. If I don't, I'm dead. Speak of which, you better leave town. As soon as the boss knows," he began, but Cassus had already tossed a knife into his chest. He gasped for breath, looking at Cassus, eyes wide with betrayal. Cassus smiled sadly and closed the distance. He whispered in his ear.

"Sorry, old friend. The moment you saw me, you were dead," Cassus whispered in his ear. He cleaned his knife on the man's shirt and pocketed it. He approached the first detective and smiled politely as Joey breathed his last breath.

"Your partner needs better aim. Oh, and Joey didn't know anything. He was always a dumb pawn. Destined to make one suicide job and be carted into jail or the morgue afterwards. Oh, do I know you? You look like the cop that arrested me, what, one, two years ago? You made an interesting face when I walked out. Lack of evidence and testimony will do that, you know. You are Detective Lanning, are you not? If not, well, I feel like a fool."

Cassus spoke all of this like a smile, like he was recalling a humorous incident with an old friend.

Mallory swore under his breath as the coffee cup struck the hostage-taker in the side of the head. It wasn't supposed to hit him! Either way, his objective had been completed. Miraculously, the gunman let Bianca go as he stumbled back, clearly stunned. Bianca scrambled for cover behind the side of the desk while Manny squeezed off two rounds. Both of them missed, coming uncomfortably close to Mallory and crashing into the windows behind him. He flattened himself behind the pillar, controlling his breathing and reassessing the situation.

As he was doing this he heard conversation behind him. Peeking out from cover, he saw a man standing in front of the desk, talking to the gunman. He was well dressed, and noticeably well protected as Mallory was able to discern the outline of a bullet-resistant vest underneath his attire. He glanced back at the gunman and noticed that...there was a throwing knife in his chest. Foamy, bright red blood trickled out of his lungs as he crumpled to the floor, hitting his head hard on the office chair and smearing blood over the desktop. Manny and the rest of the police ensemble moved from their position and took over the lobby, surrounding the knife-wielding man and securing the rest of the building.

He gestured Manny to look after Bianca, who was clearly in a state of shock and slumped beside the front desk. As for the mystery man with the throwing knives? Mallory knew instantly who he was upon walking up to him.

Mallory couldn't help but smile. "Mr. Angelo, we meet again." He extended his hand in a friendly gesture that he reserved for a certain group of people he'd met while working in law-enforcement. And Cassus Angelo was part of that group. "Thanks for stepping in today. As you can see, the Coffee-Cup Manoeuvre has had better days. And I wouldn't be one to argue with you that. Not a very bright chap, that's for sure.", he said with a chuckle. "Yes, that was about one year ago, when I first started. As for the case against you, you and I both know very well why there conveniently wasn't a testimony. Four critical witnesses and their accomplices killed within three days? Two of them high-ranking mafia bosses who'd pledged to come forward with information? It seems like more than a coincidence, and that was enough to raise my eyebrows when you walked out of that courtroom. It's a shame that evidence can be killed off. Though I suppose that's a compliment to you seeing as we really had no other leads. You're pretty darn clean with your work."

Mallory waved down the other officers surrounding them and moved in closer to Cassus, whispering: "And you'll be glad to know that the corrupt Staff Sergeant working that case was convicted of obstruction of justice, among other charges, almost two months after. But I'm not here to bring up your skeletons in the closet. After all, why would you be here if it weren't to leave them behind, eh?" He gave him a wink and pat on the shoulder as he walked off to the ambulance outside where Bianca was taken by Paramedics. Although Cassus had written this "Joey" character off as a simple pawn, Mallory had a feeling in his gut that there was something more to it. As he was heading out the door, he caught Manny coming in from outside.

"Hey Jim, I'm sorry about that man. I just fucked up my aim. It's a miracle I didn't hit her or you." Manny said, with an exasperated look on his face.

"Don't sweat it. We're lucky we had Arnold Schwarzenegger here come over and stick a knife in him. Things could have turned out a bit differently. How is she?"

"I dunno, she's with the medics. I just got off the phone with the sarge. He says I'll take this case seeing as you've gone overtime for the last while."

"Look, I'd like to get involved with this since-"

"Jim, no. You look like hell man. Go home and get some sleep. Shack it up with that wife of yours, get that rest and relaxation you need and then come back. I've seen too many detectives burnout, man. And a lot of them go loco. Don't worry, I'll give that scut on your desk to one of them newbies we got now."

Mallory sighed. He was right. He didn't possess the mental or physical energy to tackle this at the moment. "Okay. But let me go and see the girl. I know her, and she might know what this guy was up to today. Send me updates when you get them, I'll be home."

"You damn well better be home, 'cause if I find you sneaking back into the office again, I swear Mallory, I'm gonna knock your ass out and put you on a plane to Hawaii." Manny guffawed. They did their quick little "secret handshake" that involved fist bumps and clapping hands, and the two detectives were on their way.

As he was opening the double doors to leave, he noticed a woman on the sidewalk with a worried expression on her face. Her expression wasn't what caught his eye though. It was her dress-she looked as though she litteraly traveled in time from the 1950's and wound up in modern-day Miami, Florida. Was she a witness? Maybe. I'll have to chat with her after. He tried not to stare as he walked to the ambulance, but he couldn't help it. She was incredibly pretty. And incredibly different.

The mans breath was hot on her neck, as if he were inhaling her scent. As she squirmed to greater the distance between them, he wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her close - much like a body shield. His hands weren't shy to grope her curves, the barrel of his gun tangled within her tresses. Her hair had fallen from its place when he had grabbed her, the honey blonde strands all in disarray. Red rimmed, her eyes had yet to shed a tear but boy was she on the verge. Jerking her arm from his hold, he gripped her wrist forcefully with his free hand, twisting it behind her back. "Oh, you like it rough then, baby?" He said toyingly.

Whimpering, Bianca hunched over, unable to keep still. Her eyes stared at the floor ahead, her lips moving in the familiar prayers taught as a young girl in the Catholic Church. Every second stretched on for hours, and Bianca couldn't even get a view of her surroundings beyond the floor he had forced her to face. The man holding her hostage didn't lax until a voice familiar to both of them cut through the tension. "Joey?...."

Bianca twisted her neck to get a look at Cassus, noticing the familiarity between the two. Like two old chums sharing stories they fell into conversation like they had picked up wherever they left off. If it wasn't for the adrenaline making her delirious, she could've followed the conversation better, except once the cup hit the arm of her captor Bianca jumped at her opportunity - hiding herself beside her desk. Shots rang out, debris from the wall at the entry of the bullet spraying across Bianca's work space and despite the situation Bianca found the time to think about having to hear it from Yolanda later.

In the calm, she could hear the men's discussion. "It would be better for you to surrender." once again she could recognize Cassus' voice. However there was something in the morning rasp of his voice that sounded different, like there was a streak of danger she hadn't heard before.

"I... No way man. Sorry, but I have to do this. If I don't, I'm dead. Speak of which, you better leave town. As soon as the boss knows-" Desperation was obvious in his voice, until the sickening squelch of pierced flesh interupted his thoughts, followed by a thud as his body hit the floor. His eyes rolled to the back of his head, crimson staining his shirt and beginning to puddle beneath his weight.

Unable to speak, Bianca just stared at the man who had just held her life within his own hands, dead on the floor. Initially she couldn't tear her eyes from him, inching toward his corpse with mild curiousity. As her fingers slicked across the floor wet with blood she stalled, grimacing at her hand with disgust as she scooted several feet away - blood from her fingertips trailing the floor.

"Come with me." Said a gruff voice as a man swept down beside her. He hoisted her up effortlessly, offering his own suit jacket as a napkin for her bloodied hand. Bianca merely shook her head, although touched by his offer. "I'm Detective Manuel, we're just going to have some people look over you." Bianca allowed herself to be led outside, but not before glancing over her shoulder to see both detective Mallory and Cassus in deep conversation. As she was dragged past a striking woman with beautiful tattoos and a polished finished, Bianca smiled goofily. "I assure you Hotel Colony will compensate for any inconvenience." She laughed, as if it was a joke only she understood. Her mind was all over the place, it felt like taking thirteen shots and then popping some OxyContin to pull it all together. Strange how alive she felt after walking so close to death.

The paramedic was kind, offering Bianca water before proceeding to check over her for any injury, which Bianca was sure could only be figured out by a therapist. When she was done with her water she poured the remainder over her hand attempting to wash the blood away. However despite the abundance of water the red had already stained beneath the tips of her nails. As the paramedic disappeared in the front of her vehicle, Detective Mallory had reappeared at her side, a concerned expression scrawled across his face.

Weakly she smiled, cupping her now empty glass with both hands in her laps, struggling to look the man in the eye for the first time yet. "Hey," she mumbled, scratching the back of her head, "I'm just so relieved...I mean grateful - or both you know. ...Anyways just thanks, you really saved my skin." It was his direct action that had let her escape from Joey's grasp, and Bianca couldn't discredit that. Sighing the girl continued, "I went to college for four years and end up at some shitty job like this and just saw my life being toyed with like keys to a baby. I'm fine you know just," her fingers raked through her darkened roots as she blew out a breath, as if exhaling the negativity, "out of it.."

The paramedic returned, this time to make sure Bianca hadn't acquired a concussion, nodding cordially to the Detective "I'm fine really." Bianca said as the bright light of the woman's tool shined into her eyes.

The woman chuckled under her breath, "Thats what they all say, but you still have up to twenty four hours to go to the emergency room, just in case the adrenaline has you a little hazy." Her dulcet sweet voice left no room to argue, a genuine look of concern on her face. "No concussion, just let me clean up your knee and you'll be free."

".....my knee?" Glancing down, for the first time Bianca noticed the small gash on her knee, blood streaking down her shin and ruining her beautiful and expensive loafers. "Oh," she said softly, sheepishly glancing at the paramedic who had taken a grin of amusement. Absently, Bianca kicked off her shoe to pick up later, the woman being kindly enough to wipe her skin clean before bandaging the wound.

"Okay, you're free. Remember - twenty four hours. You get any aches or pains you let us know." Bianca had stood immediately, slipping her shoe back on and glancing at the woman as she spoke. The woman draped her arm around Bianca casually, "be safe now. And you watch over her detective." The woman said with a wink to Detective Mallory. If the two continued to converse, Bianca wouldn't have known. It was in that moment she felt the familiar vibration of her phone in her blazer pocket. Excusing herself, Bianca stepped aside to take the phone call.

"Mija, estas bien?" Her fathers worried voice asked. Bianca scanned her surroundings, sighting the news van which was most likely the source of her fathers panic for her well being.

"I'm fine papΓ, just a little shook up."

"I'm going down there right now-"

"No, I'm fine papΓ don't even! I'm fine, everything's fine, you don't have to run to my rescue every time something goes wrong." She griped, rolling her eyes. Fernando undoubtedly would run to the ends of the earth for his little girl, but the man had a history of blowing off work for all sorts of reasons which didn't sit well with the owner at the auto shop. Although a talented mechanic, Fernando had the chronic problem of blowing off responsibilities. Bianca always had to talk him down from running to her side at the smallest of issues.

She could practically hear him thinking through the phone, not even realizing she was holding her own breath until he spoke again. "Okay, but don't expect me to let this go." His thick accent making his English barely recognizable. The click of the call ending brought on a wave of relief, exhaling the breath she'd been holding. At the end of the day Bianca loved her father, but his temper was unreal and he would find someone to blame for his daughter being at risk.

Sighing, Bianca tucked her phone away, wrapping her arms around herself as if to assure that she was tangible, it all felt like just a bad dream.

It always amazed Cassus that the detective took his side. He had almost forgotten about that. Just because he was involved in the death of several criminals or corrupt cops, Detective Mallory thought of him as a good-hearted guy, maybe a vigilante like in Boondock Saints. In reality, Cassus was a criminal who killed other criminals at the bidding of criminals who had the money and the power to hire his services. He may have retired, but that didn't make him a good person. No, he was perfectly aware he wasn't a good person. He didn't buy in to the delusion that "I did what I had to do", nor did he subscribe to the martyrdom complex where he guilt-tripped himself through all the people he had murdered. The former attitude was that of someone pretending to be good. The latter was someone who actually was good, albeit, repenting of past sins. Still, Cassus made the decision never to harm with Mallory. He might have been a killer, but he did have honor. At the compliment to his work, he smiled.

"Thank you, Detective. I never understood the macho approach to killing some of my former peers took. They always left witnesses and they never thought that people seeking vengeance would succeed in killing them. Of course, I didn't manage to stay unknown myself, but I never left witnesses. Witnesses that would talk, anyway," he stated with a shrug as he followed the cop.

He walked with the detective, sharing bits and pieces of news, perhaps a few bits that were unknown to the other. Eventually, they reached the double-doors.

"Joey would have had a chessmaster behind him. He or she is the one that is dangerous. Only someone with power or influence could throw away a hit man and have the influence and wealth to ensure nothing is traced back to them. Whoever he was looking for would provide a clue on who might be after him, but not enough to convict or even issue a warrant."

Cassus paused in his talk. Mallory's attention had drifted to a new face. He looked her up and down. She was dressed retro, perhaps a hipster trying to be cool? No, her clothing was too well-made and accurate. She was genuinely interested in the 50's era and it looked like Mallory had found her intriguing. Perhaps Cassus might have tried to lure her to his bed, but out of respect for the detective, he'd bow out.

He made his way to Bianca and she still looked in shock and quite worse for wear. Now, Cassus hated to see a pretty instrument in that manner.

"I assume that you told the cops everything, bella? Who he was looking for and where the target is now?" he asked her calmly. He waited for her reply before continuing.

"I'll escort you home. You can get a change of clothes whatever else we need. Then, we can take advantage of the hotel's finest luxuries. They owe you for what has happened to you on the job. If not, I'll pay for it. They can't discipline you for taking a day off now."

He smiled at her, this time giving her the comfort of an old joke between them, "The spa will do wonders in washing out that silly dye from your hair."

Aria Karalis

"You're late," Camille told her the second she walked out of her bedroom. Aria rolled her eyes and made a face.

"Thanks, my ever-loving roomie, for telling me that - an hour later," she growled and snatched up a bagel. She hadn't put on her uniform yet. In all honestly, it was too hot for that stiff dress and Aria would not be caught dead in that thing in public. "Why didn't you wake me up....or turn the alarm back on?" Camille sighed exasperatedly.

"Suuure. Next time, I won't be a thoughtful friend and let my roomie - who's been working her ass off on these performance practices, mind you - get a moment of real rest. You were going to sleep for three hours; I had to give you two more." Aria couldn't keep the small smile off her face as she bit into the now cream cheese covered half of her bagel.

"I know, I know." Camille frowned.

"Oh, and you might not have to go to work today anyway." She said the last part in a little squeak, sidestepping Aria to head for the living room. Aria's face twisted into one of half frustration and half surprise. She grabbed an orange juice and headed after her roommate.

"Camille?" Camille only turned on the news and Aria watched the reporter go on and on in front of the Hotel.

"Apparently, some jackass decided to hold the clerk hostage and was looking for someone. He had a gun." The color drained from Aria's face and she momentarily panicked at the thought of something happening to Bianca. They weren't the closest of friends, but still. She was a nice girl. She was probably terrified right about now. Aria fished for her cell phone, which she tucked into the couch last night as she fell asleep writing lyrics. She quickly dialed the number she recalled being Bianca's, awaiting the woman's voice as the phone rang.

"Hey, Bianca? It's me - Aria. Just calling. I heard what happened. Are you alright?"

Rose watched the scene unfold with horror, her feet still glued firmly to the floor. She couldn't move, remaining statue like even as a second man approached the first. Their conversation was just that, rather cool considering the fact that the life of an innocent party was at stake. Her eyes flicked from one man to the other, when something completely different drew her attention.

Whatever noise the Brit was about to make when the man behind the pillar threw the coffee cup was strangled in her throat. For what felt like a long moment, her eyes lingered on the culprit; was he insane, or just trying to get the girl killed? The next few events happened rather quickly. The coffee cup collided with the hostage taker's head, the receptionist was released, and gunshots that were so much louder in reality that she thought.

American thriller film; shoot first, act second, think later. Blinking, Rosie found herself lying on the cold, hard floor, unsure if she fell, fainted or reacted subconsciously.Β
She remained in place, cheek to the floor, looking away from the scene, her arms braced against the floor, in fear of further gunfire. She didn't move from her flat in crime ridden central London to get shot dead by police in nice hotel in a reasonably nice area of Miami. She nearly jumped out of her skin as she felt a plastic glove touch her arm, a broad Northern accent asking if she was okay. If she wasn't in some degree of shock, Rosie might have laughed. She had travelled half way around the world, to a city bustling with hundreds of thousands of people of all different cultures and nationalities, and out of all those people, it was a Northerner to find her here. The medic helped her clumsily to her feet, his lips were moving but Rose's brain had ceased to function; she couldn't hear what he was saying. Her eyes had come to rest on the body in a growing pool of blood, and it took a gentle but firm hand on her shoulder to coax her to move outside.Β

A cup of warm liquid was pushed into her hand, and she sipped it eagerly. Rose caught sight of the receptionist as she was being led outside, sporting a goofy smile as she passed. "I assure you Hotel Colony will compensate for any inconvenience." The woman laughed, leaving Rose just a little concerned. She wasn't the only one in some degree of shock. After a moment or two, her fellow countryman returned with a smile on his face.Β
"Well, you've gotten a bit of colour back into your cheeks, so that's a good sign. Thought you was going to pass out on me for a while."
He began checking her over quickly, for concussion first, then her blood pressure, sugars and one or two other checks to make sure she hadn't passed out from any untoward reasons. "Just in case that fiasco weren't enough, eh?"
Eventually he somehow gathered her accent from her monosyllabic answers and began chatting to her about the pleasures of being British in America, including the severe lack of decent tea, useless football teams, and substandard pubs. The first she agreed with; the latter two she couldn't care less about if she tried. It was rude, but she was simply in no mood for idle chit chat. Sure enough, he got the hint after a short period of time, and with a sheepish grin, wished her the best, and told her to keep warm, in company if possibly, and not to get too excited.

Rose's mobile had started to ring frantically, but she ignored it for now, folding her arms and staring back into the hotel. How long did a crime scene like this take to process? Would she need to stay somewhere else? All her things, quite literally all of them, bar the seventy dollars and visa card in her purse, and her tough-up make up and phone in her bag, were in her hotel room. She bit her lip in a moment of worry, before she thought she felt somebody watching her. Turning around wasn't a normal reaction; Rosie was only too aware that her appearance often drew attention to herself; often those who had the manners not to point, simply gawked at her. Usually if she caught them, she would shoot a smile and wriggle her fingers or come up with a beautifully clever comment.Β

On turning and seeing two men watching her, Rosie didn't do either. She recognised both from the lobby, both not unattractive, but she wasn't entirely comfortable with them. In his defence, one of the men, the one who had been talking to the hostage taker, was being subtle about it. It was more like he was studying her, trying to analyse her choice in fashion rather than analysing what bra size she was. The other was obviously in his mid twenties, but had the vague expression of a teenager catching sight of the prettiest girl at school on his face. It was made more noticeable by the fact that he was trying desperately not to stare; Rose remembered herself at the last minute and spared him a wink and a smile. The poor bloke looked like he needed it.

Per usual, Ezra was unaware and misinformed. Up until the gunshots the boy had been sleeping with his arm around the smooth body of a naked woman. Her name was Agnes Wellington, the daughter of a local CEO and a hell of a kisser. She was one of the regulars, as much as Ezra didn't want to admit that he had regulars. She was slender and pale with coloring of a misty morning. Her eyes were a cool blue and her hair was blonde wrapped with strands of teasing red. She was without a doubt a beautiful woman. It wasn't just her outward appearance that had Ezra calling her for dinner and some fooling around, she was also remarkably witty and daring; qualities that the little Spaniard admired.

The night before was like most nights spent with his dear Agnes. He spent more money than intended on some five star entertainment and dinner for the lady and then spent the rest of the night having repeated sex. The date night wasn't unsual but the location was. Ezra had an organized club life and suitor life, and the evening before was supposed to had been a club night. He was sure that he would hear an earful from Bianca later. He was supposed to have gone out with her. Ezra, being the man he is, forgot. Then failed to even call her to apologize. Oh well. Having that woman mad at him wasn't too bad. Mostly he just found it either very funny or very arousing.

The commotion from downstairs woke him, though he was much too disoriented to recognize that the sounds were from a gun. In one smooth motion he turned over, pulled on a pair of boxers and then kissed the forehead of Agnes. She was still asleep, too worn out to be awakened. His hands trailed along her exposed side with pure intention, after his fingers picked the edges of her paper skin he brought the lush comforter up and around her torso. This action was mostly out of kindness, the other part was from distraction. The poor man was unable to focus with such perfect, plump breasts in front of him.

His left hand trailed through his hair as he stretched his back and started toward the bathroom. He might as well go down stairs and see what's going on, along with get some breakfast for the two of them. Ezra may be a man of many women but he never failed to impress them. He always always finished what he started, even if that meant he had an awkward morning breakfast with a girl he hadn't meant to sleep with. A shower, a some designer clothes later he was one his way out the door. His precious friend and lover was still fast asleep when he closed the door.

Confusion followed after, along with concern and then apathy. Whatever happened happened with Bianca, but the boy wasn't even able to comfort her. She was be led out by Cassus and quite frankly Ezra didn't much like that man. He kept his profile low but confident and he acknowledged the hotel's cafe was busy and headed out the front to find food elsewhere. His observations were not completely useless though, as he reached the door his eyes found a beautiful woman. She was new around her, probably a guest, but she was scaled with a collection of classy tattoos and had hair perfectly placed around her pale face. He would have to introduce himself later.

Glancing at the face of her copper watch, the time read 12:45. How had time passed so slow yet rushed by at the same time? There was a dull ache behind her left temple, making Bianca squint through the brave sunlight that shone down from directly above their heads. Pulling off her blazer, Bianca undid the buttons of her stiff blouse, sweating under the midday heat. Curious civilians snapped photos on their smart phones, and those who had been present were being questioned one after another. Supposedly they weren't allowed back into the hotel until every room was cleared to ensure there was no remaining threat.

Huffing with annoyance, Bianca began to fan herself with a stiff piece of cardboard as she looked onto the white and blue building with betrayal. Until now it had been considered a safe haven to the vixen, a place where she was valued for her work and not her pretty face. Now, she wasn't sure if she wanted to step foot back into the place. Cassus came to her side, asking if she had answered all the questions to the police. She nodded robotically, staring ahead. The police had taken her statement, and she answered the questions they had. But looking back she realized she had left out the bit about what she had heard Cassus and Joey speaking about. Maybe it had slipped her mind, but maybe she wanted more answers before she answered any more questions.

She squinted at Cassus with curiousity, the sun catching the natural highlights of his lay-as-it-may dark blonde mop. There was so much about the charming young man she had yet to learn. "I'll escort you home. You can get a change of clothes whatever else we need. Then, we can take advantage of the hotel's finest luxuries. They owe you for what has happened to you on the job. If not, I'll pay for it. They can't discipline you for taking a day off now."

His charm was infallible, causing Bianca to melt internally and her cold demeanor to ebb away. She looked back to the hotel, which didn't seem it would get back running for an hour or two, there was time for her to collect herself. Only a monster would force Bianca back to work given the circumstances. She smiled coyly as he joked, "The spa will do wonders in washing out that silly dye from your hair."

She swatted his hand away playfully, scrunching her nose as if displeased. "I'll have you know I still had three to five washes until this color comes out." Bianca reached to her honey colored locks only to find them in disarray. The mornings rough handling along with the gunman grabbing her by her hair had left strands going in all sorts of directions. Laughing to herself, Bianca removed the pins holding up her tresses, shaking out her mane so that it fell just past her mid back in long layers. Running her fingers through her hair, Bianca looked to Cassus once again. "That all sounds...really nice though."

Once again the pop tune ring tone interrupted her conversation, to which Bianca made a motion for him to wait as she took the call. "Aria," was all Bianca could say before the girl's panicked tone was proof she had seen what had happened, "No one was hurt...I'm fine. Our guest Cassus has offered to fix me up." She joked, glancing at the enigma of a man from the corner of her eye. Perhaps this time together would give her a chance to ask about what had happen between him and her captor. "I don't want to keep him waiting though so I'll give you the details later...I haven't seen Yolanda otherwise I'd tell you wether you have to come in today." Bianca quickly scanned the crowd in hopes to catch sight of their manager. But the girls then said their goodbyes, and Bianca was back facing Cassus, clapping her hands together.

"Well I take the bus out here normally, but I only live like fifteen minutes away by car...." Anybody who had money to LIVE at Hotel Colony had to have a car as well, unless he too relied on public transportation, which was hard to believe given the impression Bianca had on Cassus. He seemed to be a man of wealth, however it was that he made his money she never knew.
But perhaps it was about time she would find out.

Re: Miami Heat : Hotel Colony

Hey, I was busy a little in real life, but I'm back. Is this still going on?

Re: Miami Heat : Hotel Colony

Hey guys,
Just found out that I will probably be working for most of this week; won't have much time to post until next weekend maybe. It's come up rather suddenly-- feel free to puppet Rosie if needs must.

Re: Miami Heat : Hotel Colony

No, I think that was well played @almostinsane. No need to drag it out and it's short and sweet. Hopefully my post adds onto it well, I just put it up. I also like the idea of Mallory and Cassus having a past, that should play out nicely. Good stuff y'all!

Re: Miami Heat : Hotel Colony

Sorry if I killed the gunman too soon. I felt it was a great opportunity to demonstrate Cassus', well not lack of empathy exactly. Maybe numbness? Detachment?

Re: Miami Heat : Hotel Colony

Cool. I shall try to have a post up tomorrow. Have to get off for the day now.

Re: Miami Heat : Hotel Colony

It'll take a bit for me to get used to, but I think it makes sense now. It's definitely a different way to look at dialogue and storytelling. Please feel free to give tips and feedback; it's the breakfast of champions :)

Re: Miami Heat : Hotel Colony

@Insane - a method we can all learn from! Thanks for your input!

Sorry I had to post again before everyone got a chance, I'm very busy these next few days so I wanted to dive right into the drama and let you guys take it from there. If anyone has any ideas on how to spice up this roleplay feel free to express them, I'm interested in what your opinions are!!! So far I'm very impressed by you guys, also as a reminder we may have a slow pace sometimes but it doesn't mean the roleplay is dead - life gets busy sometimes. I just ask that you remain attentive. You guys are great, truly.

If you know anyone who you think might do well in this roleplay with this group of people feel free to invite! In the meantime i will be plotting evil things to throw at you guys (:

Although this will be a very CASUAL roleplay where the plot is CHARACTER based instead of storyline based, I do hope that you guys don't mind being challenged with a curve ball now and again, and feel free to throw one at me in return. Can't wait to see what you guys can come up with!

Re: Miami Heat : Hotel Colony

I get what you mean, but I personally never really take control of another's character unless it's absolutely necessary. If that happens, I just do something like have my character drag the others to where they need to be if they're just standing there while the action is going on.

Mostly, however, I don't like controlling others' characters without permission.

Re: Miami Heat : Hotel Colony

In some role plays people have roleplayed like that, perhaps farther down the line if people take too long and we've learned more about how each character acts/speaks if given permission it's okay - the way i personally do it is just be very vague, I.e.;

"Did you hear about Matt and Dana?" Asked Felix, turning to Hannah with an enthused expression.

Hannah laughed, feigning ignorance as she went about her business.

Felix continued, "Well Matt supposedly finally made her give up the goods..."

That way the person rping HANNAH in this case is free to say any sort of response in her posts.

Re: Miami Heat : Hotel Colony

Sounds straightforward enough. I've edited my post so it should conform now. Thanks for the heads up!

Re: Miami Heat : Hotel Colony

Well, you just address them in one of your posts and then they'll address you in their posts.

Re: Miami Heat : Hotel Colony

@almostinsane ohhh right. That's good to know. I'll tweak my post to fix that then, but would you mind filling me in on how dialogue works in this? If one character is to actually converse with another? Not really making sense to me at this point.

@RPGrosa(and everyone else) I'm not sure how NPC's work and it wouldn't let me tag the Convenience store clerk in my post- would you be able to make that NPC( if it matters) unless we get a role for that? Thanks!

You don't need to make NPC's or even create profiles for them, Canada. However, you can't really control other people's characters like Bianca unless you have permission from the one playing them. That's always been my experience, anyway.

Re: Miami Heat : Hotel Colony

I should be posting sometime tonight. :)

Re: Miami Heat : Hotel Colony

I'll post ASAP. I just started a new a new nannying job. But after this week I should be able to be frequent. Also, instead of making a beach bum girl I'll probably make a male, since we seem to be needing them.

Re: Miami Heat : Hotel Colony

I want to give everyone a chance to post before i post again, but Im sorry I've been so all over the place - you would not believe my week. Anyways feel free to post your intro so to speak. There will be a commotion at the Hotel so if you wish to have your character be a part of it, I suggest you post before i do. ;) xoxo

Re: Miami Heat : Hotel Colony

when's the first post?

Re: Miami Heat : Hotel Colony

Okay guys hope i haven't lost any of you yet, will be posting the first post in the AM! I know it's difficult sometimes to have characters cross paths, just remember to take initiative and please don't isolate your characters all the time. The first scene will have a dramatic surprise within the lobby of the Hotel Colony, expect drama soon! Xoxo

Re: Miami Heat : Hotel Colony

Just finished with Aria. I hope she's okay.
