The waves got into everything. My ears, nose, and mouth. With a gasp I spat water out and snapped open my eyes. I got to my feet and was racked with a bout of coughing. I ran out into the water and vomited. Water. Vomiting water into water. Wonderful. Wiping my mouth I turned around and viewed my current home. At the treeline a few people sat, obviously surprised by my awakening. Feebly I held up my hand in a sign of friendliness and greeting before everything went black and I plunged face first into the sand.

I could barely muster a groan. My forehead felt hot. I tried pushing myself to my feet, but I slipped in the porous sand. I felt thirsty. Very, very, very thirsty. Things began to fade again and I saw spots before plunging into unconsciousness again.

Things swam in and out of focus. People standing over me, palm trees blowing over my head, someone placing a wet rag on my burning forehead. I began to feel cooled and slipped into a feverish slumber. Dreams were blended and whirled into a large, unintelligible mess I couldn't understand when asleep, let alone recall awake. When I awoke the sun was way lower in the sky and no one was in sight. I got up from my palm leaf mat and began to search for the people I saw earlier.

It was getting dark quickly and I had yet to find someone. The palm leaves rustled in the wind and small animals were moving in the underbrush. At least...I think they were small. 'I need to find someone fast.' I thought, as I picked up my pace. I skirted along the coast, looking for any camps set up along there but there was nothing. I was beginning to lose hope when a small flickering light coming from deeper in the woods caught my eye. Ignoring the fact that my feet were bare I ran over rocks and sharp sticks, scrambling for that one little hope. I burst into the clearing where the other survivors sat. They looked at me with the same bewildered look they gave me earlier. They obviously forgot I was there and left me laying where I was. I sat down on the log next to a blonde haired man and asked "You guys have anything to eat?"

"So you guys must be low on food to not respond." I said, dejected. I held out my hand. "The name's...what is my name?" I sat and stared at the fire for a bit, pondering. "I think...it's...Mark. My name's Mark. Nice to meet you guys. Man, what a day it's been. Anyone know what happened to get us here?"

"Wow that really happened? Gosh, we sure are lucky to be alive. Gee, you'd think with something that serious...I'd remember it. Why can't I remember it...and who am I?" I began to pace frantically. "Something isn't right. Why can't I remember!?" I sat back down, breathing heavily. I listened to the blowing palms and crashing waves as they calmed me down. I sighed, "I guess we should get started with shelters and gathering food. When is sunup going to come around? How long was I out?"

Eiko looked at the man pace around heavily, then sit down. In a desperate act of comfort, she put her hand on his shoulder. He looked up at her, confused, but she just smiled. She then sat down on the sand and began to play with the red pocket knife.

(Memory) "Why are you taking that pocket knife with you?" She asked Jace as they walk up the deck onto the ship. Jace had flashed her a smile, the one that made her stomach tie in knots. "You never know when ya might need it!" Eiko rolled her eyes and lightly shoved him on the shoulder. "Your going to get in trouble if the teacher sees that." She gestured to there teacher in the front of the group. Jace laughed playfully and put his arm around her shoulder. "Ah, but that's only if Mrs. Crabby @$$ see it." Eiko had blushed bright red as he did that, and shoved him off rather forcibly, but Jace had just laughed again. "You won't tell on me, right?" Eiko sighed, covering her face with her hair a bit to hide the blush, but eventually answered "no, I guess not." Jace had chuckled and punched her lightly in the shoulder in a friendly manor.

"Your cute when you get all shy, Eiko." He had said. "But your still my bet friend!" (End memory)

I sighed. "True, true. Well, I already rested when I passed out earlier so I'll stand guard. The rest of you seem like you could use a good night of sleep." I said, picking up a stick and sharp piece of flint. "Let me just...there." I held out my new weapon. "This spear will fend off anything that comes close. I hope."

I continued to pace the stretch of beach the fire lit. I saw one of the survivors sitting on the beach, trailing her finger in the sand. I walked over and stuck my spear down into the sand. "Can't sleep? I don't think I could even if I was tired. This whole shipwreck thing would leave me awake for hours. And then what good would I be? I'm assuming we don't have coffee here."

Eiko laughed at his comment, an true, laugh, not a fake one. It felt good to laugh after all that had happened the day before.

She then sighed and layed down on the sand and starred up into the stars. "It's hard to believe something like that could happen. I mean, one day your boarding a cruise for a school trip, and the next your stranded on a desert island. Life is cruel that way, huh?"

"Pretty much. At least...I think." I sighed. "Honestly, remembering that would be great right about now. I mean, you have memories you can hang on to but I don't. It seems harder to me but I don't really know that. Well, you can remember who you lost right? I can't even do that. Except for this anyway." I said as I opened my watch to show her the photo. "I don't know who they are but I feel they are important...in some way, to me."

I walked back to the dwindling fire where everyone lay asleep. I saw one of the dark-haired ones was starting to wake. He got up quickly, rubbed his shoulders, and went walking into the wilderness. Hey, people want to take walks sometimes so I let him go. "Alright ladies time to wake up." I said loudly, easily waking up the others. "I brought breakfast." I dropped a load of coconuts and crabs I had gathered during the night. "Enjoy, it'll be our diet for the next god knows how many days." Half of them groaned and several muttered "Five more minutes." under their breath as they struggled to open their eyes. Swinging my spear in a show-offy manner I walked off. "I'll be scouring the beach if any of you need me. Oh! By the way, a box drifted up on the beach." That got them awake fast.

Looking at the watch, she smiled slightly. "She's pretty." Resting her head on her knees, she watched the moon rest on the ocean. "Hey, think of it this way. If you can't remember, you can tell yourself that you didn't lose her. How do you know she was even on the cruise for you? See, there's something for you to hang on to. The fact that she might be alive and waiting for you somewhere." She rested her head on the ground, using her jacket as a pillow and finally able to close her eyes without force.

(Timeskip to next morning)

Eiko woke up the the blinding sun hitting her face, surprised she got any sleep at all. She groaned, turning on her side and covering her eyes with her arms. She sound of a bag being dropped woke her up, feeling her stomach growl, she picked up a coconut. The bitter taste it her tongue, and she scrunched up her nose.

"There has to be something better" she mumbled, grabbing her jacket and pocket knife. She saw Mark walking off with his spear, the others were off to examine the box (which in all honesty, was a little afraid to go near) and Pike was no where in sight.

Sighing, she got up and started walking out deeper into the island, wanting to see if she could find any supplies needed.

I was the first to notice the new person to was up on the shore. While everyone was marveling at the nailed up box I was going to get open later I noticed a shape wash up about a hundred feet down the shore. I held my hand up to my eyes to shade them from the sun and get a better look on what it was. It was a person! "Guys!" I called over to them. "Look!" I pointed over at whoever it was. I shimmied down the palm tree I was nested in and took off through the sand. I didn't see the root that snaked through the ground and landed face-first into the hot sand. I pulled my face out of it, spitting the grit out of my mouth, and looked up at where they washed up. Whoever they were, they were gone. Was it just a figment of my imagination? I shook my head and walked back to the crowd. They seemed ready to welcome a new survivor but seemed disappointed when I came back. "I must be hallucinating. The amnesia, you know." They seemed to understand and walked back to the camp. All but Eiko. "I saw them too." she said before turning to follow them. So where did they go?

While walking around the ocean when I saw a girl watching us from behind a tree. I watched her for a few seconds, but all she did was stand there. She heard Mark yell for us to look, but everyone ran off before everyone could see her. Mark was standing there looking confused. He said is was amnesia, but that wasn't true.

"I saw them too" I said, looking in the direction of girl. I wanted to go after her, but didn't want to go out into the jungle alone. I turned to Mark and grabbed his hand. "Come on, let's follow her" She said, dragging Mark behind her as she ran after the girl.

"Wha-? You've found them? Where?" I asked as I freed my collar from Eiko's steel vice of a grip. "Look here's a footprint. They went into the jungle? Well I hope they didn't go too far, or they may not find their way out. Oh and the dark-haired one went into there himself. I sure hope he knows where he went, because none of us have mapped out any of this. Agh, I'm getting sidetracked. Let's go!" I said as I grabbed my spear.

I heard a shout come from deeper into the jungle. It seemed like a male voice but from the distance we were I couldn't tell. I pulled myself up a tree. "Wait here." I told Eiko. "I'm going to get a bird's eye view." I popped my head above the palm fronds and scanned the dense vegetation. This was one big island that's for sure. I couldn't even see the other side! It seems the beach we were stranded on was the west side of the island because the sun was in front of me. Slightly to the left, I guess it would be northeast, a mountain rose up from the middle of the jungle with trees growing up it. I couldn't see any distinct movements or colors other than green out in the jungle so I climbed back down. "I found nothing." I told her.

She held up a finger to quiet me before peering into the dark jungle. "I heard something else. It was this way." she said as she pointed deeper in. "Let's go."

I grunted, "Right." We took off into the damp brush. I could feel my arms and legs getting cut up by the terrain and plants. I stumbled over a rock that jutted out of the ground. I fell down into mud puddle. I spat out mud. "Ugh, I'm not used to this type of terrain.

We were reaching a clearing as I could see some light slowly getting brighter ahead of us. The survivor that had left earlier in the morning was standing with the person I saw wash up on the beach. "Is everything alright? We heard shouting."

I watched Mark climb up the tree to get a better view on the island. I sigheed and leaned up against the tree he had just climbed up, woundering for a second if we'd be able to make it off this island, or when a resque would come.

"I suppose we could make a boat, or even wings like in that greek story, Icurus and Deadulus." I smiled at the thought, remembering the story from history class. "Ah, but we all know how well that worked out" I chuckled slightly, but my smile faded as I heard the sound of a twig snapping, then the the muffled voices of somone talking. At that momment Mark slid down the tree, saying he found nothing, but I put up my finger to quiet him.

"I heard something else. It was this way" We ran off deeper into the jungle. I often went exploring with my friend in the forest, so I had a little experiance. Key word: a little. I heard Mark fall into a mud puddle. I couldn't help but giggle slightly as i put out my hand to help him up.

"I'm not used to this kind of terrain" he said, and I smiled at him as to say "Its okay".

We reached the clearing when we saw two survivors, the one with the long dark hair (I belive his name was Pike) and the other girl whose name i did not know. Mark explained that we heard them and came to see what was wrong. I smiled at the girl, who looked really scared and shy.

I followed behind Eiko, still brushing mud off myself. The dark-haired one was talking to the new survivor and Eiko was getting into their conversation as well. "Hi, my name is Mark. What's yours?" I asked her as I heard a snap of a branch to our left. "Perhaps we should continue this back at camp." I said nervously. "We should go. Now." We began to run back the way we came. I was leading us only by the footprints I could see in the dimly lit jungle. Whatever was moving in the brush, it wasn't planning on following us. Yet. We came back to the beach and I gave a sigh of relief, sinking down into the sand. I ran my fingers through my unkempt hair and reclined back in the sand. It was warm for this early in the morning.

The box was still where we left it, the tide had gone out and left it in dry sand. I don't think it'll be washing back out any time soon, but we need to get it higher up so it won't get washed out to sea. It may contain something important. Now if only we had something to open it...

I glanced up from where I was lying. The rest had already gone. They must have gone to the camp zone. Well, time to get to work. I got up and headed over to where our smoldering campfire was. The place was empty so they must have gone to get food. Maybe it'll be nice to surprise them with some shelters. Or maybe a shelter? I took a small stick from the fire that only had the tip of it charred. I grabbed a few palm fronds from the trees around me and wove together the individual fronds into a quilt pattern. Homemade paper, alright. I took my stick and began to sketch out a small design. The walls will be made of wood to keep out predators and a tightly woven palm frond roof will keep out any rain. Now how will I cut down trees. I'm going to need an axe.

That piece of flint I had previously used was too small to cut down one of these big trees. I've gotta find a bigger piece. I searched through the underbrush around the clearing but found nothing big enough to satisfy my needs, except on the west side. A large boulder jutted out of the ground making a nice place to sit and think, or with the right materials, will make a nice bed. We won't miss a little shard right? I took a log and wedge shaped rock, that wasn't sharp, and found a small divot in the boulder. I placed my stone in the small crack and swung my log above my head. I brought it down onto my wedge and drove it down into the boulder. A chunk came off of it with a crack and landed on the ground. I walked back to where we sat last night and got to work on smoothing out the jagged side of the axe head. Once I finished that up I grabbed a length of small vine and began to skin the bark off of it. I acquired a perfect sized stick from the edge of the clearing and began to wrap the axe head onto the stick. Once I put in the last knot I gave it a test swing. It held. Okay, time to cut down some trees.

My hands were raw and I hadn't even gotten halfway through my first tree. It's time to try something else. I walked back to the clearing and collapsed on the soft ground. 'What can I use to keep out rain?' I wondered. I looked to my right and saw my blueprint rested on one of the logs. That's it!

I was preparing my new idea for our shelters when I heard sobbing coming from the cove. I waded through the brush until I came out into the opening where the shore was. Eiko was sitting on a rock clearly unhappy. I gave a sigh of unhappiness and joined her on the rock. "It's hard...isn't it? Knowing that your loved ones could either be happily back at home or hundreds of feet beneath the sea." I gave a large exhale. "Morale is always low the first days in...i-in...movies! Yeah, movies! Hey I remembered something! My memory must be coming back!" I got up, tugging Eiko up as well. I picked her up and spun her around. Suddenly my cheeks got red and I set her down. "Sorry." I said. "This is just an excitement I'm not sure I can control. Well I should be heading back to building. Don't come peeking until I'm done!" I said as I headed back through the jungle. I smacked myself in the forehead. "What's wrong with me?!"

I gasped as Mark picked me up and spun me around. He sat me down with a flustered face and apologized, saying not to peek on the shelter till he was done. I was happy that he remembered something, and I found myself smiling because of it, but I also felt my cheeks go red. Gasping, I shook my head wildly and sat back down on the rock.

"I need to get my mind off of things" I sighed, I stood up from the rock, stretching my sore muscles and deciding to walk further down across the beach to explore what hadn't discovered.
