Ryle Lo

0 · 224 views · located in The Dream World

a character in “Mirror to The Mind”, originally authored by shadereen, as played by RolePlayGateway

Description

Image Ryle Lo

Appears to be a young man in his twenties with emerald eyes, short curly black hair, fair white skin, average complexion, and an average built body which he maintains by consuming little food. Fortunately, he isn't much of a food lover.

Ryle is an average, shy and timid guy who lacks confidence in himself. There was a time when he loves helping people in need but it all changed when he failed to pursue his dreams in art and achieve the life that he wanted. Frustrated by how his life turned out, he blamed everyone including himself and quit creating art. Whenever he thinks back, he sighs and curses his life. Ryle Lo is just a boring average guy with nothing special.

Though he doesn't create art himself, he enjoys gazing at other people's art. He loves wings and feathers as well as the clear blue sky with shades of silver clouds. In the dark sky of night, he loves to watch the moon and the stars. He hates putrid smells. He especially loves furry animals but is disgusted by cockroach and centipedes.

Before he died in his sleep, he lived in a small apartment and works as a minimum wage cashier in a small convenient store.

So begins...

The sun began to rise on the small town of Mantua and the world sprung to life as the birds began to sing a beautiful earthy jingle. The town was bathed in the sunlight as the inhabitants of this small town awoke to face their everyday lives. The Blue Rose Inn was open 24/7 and had many visitors already arriving ordering rooms and meals. The Inn was bustling with life as more new arrivals came. Mantua was one of the portal towns. Where people from earth came to the dream world, so The Blue Rose was almost always busy. Today was no different.

Trenton sat at a table in the corner of the Inn and sipped some tea. The Inn was beautiful, the entire building was made of four trees that were manipulated to grow into three floors of pure nature. On top of the building there were many blue roses, where the Inn got it's name. Trenton sat in a corner examining the new arrivals. They all seemed so awestruck by this new world, but none of them could Trenton help. He had heard of three arrivals the day prior, and they weren't to happy to be dead and trapped in some weird afterlife. He would tell them of the stone, the stone that could set them free. It wouldn't be an easy quest, but everybody has to face their fears.

The moon and the stars was glowing bright in the black cloudless sky. That was the first image Ryle Lo saw when he opened his eyes from his sleep. Confusion and suspicion overwhelmed him. Blinking his eyes, he sat up and studied the place.
Where am I? he questioned himself while looking around, rubbing his eyes with the ball of his hand.
Just a while ago, he was in his apartment and fell into a slumber on his mattress after a long night of partying with friend. The place he was now was rather strange. The trees were shaped or grow to be houses but all was dark, no light illuminated from within. Probably because it was late night.
How did I get here?
Slowly, he got up and dusted the dirt from his back where he laid on the dirt and grass. That was when he saw the light from the building. Naturally, he headed towards it.
The place was crowded with people and bustling with sounds of music and chatter which was foreign to Ryle. The hanging sign stated that the place named Blue Rose Inn. The people there spoke few languages that he understood. From what he could muster, he gained knowledge that he was in the dream world where soul goes when a person sleeps. Apparently, if you die in your sleep, you are stuck in the world.
I have to wake up then, he though and focused to wake himself up, pinching himself on the cheeks and biting his tongue, but to no avail. Realizing what may be the reason of his failure to awake, his heart raced and pounded heavily.
"How do you know if you're dead or only sleeping!?" he asked the person that seemed to speak the same language as him, the person in blue attire. His eyes teary. "Dude, I gotta wake up!" he slapped his cheeks hard, leaving a red palm mark.

Trenton seemed to laugh as so many people started questioning where they were. It was no funny matter, but Maybe the innkeeper should put up a sign that said 'You have arrived in the Dream World's beautiful town of Mantua!', but seeing as he probably wouldn't do it Trenton pointed at a wall and imagined a sign on the wall saying such. He had to focus on fine details, what the sign was made off, how many particles made it up, what those particles atoms were made of...It was a fine science. Then the ink was even more complicated because he had to focus on the exact chemicals to make the ink black and bolded, but after about just thirty seconds of these thoughts racing through his head the sign appeared.

Trenton then turned around. "If you're in Mantua, which is where we are. Your body has died and your soul is stuck here. There's no waking up. However... If this world full of your wildest dreams doesn't satisfy you... You may speak to me later tonight at the Prancing Minotaur Tavern." Trenton stated eliminating all questions until later. He loved that everyone was so curious and hungry for this new knowledge, but he was getting swarmed by it.

Trenton then snapped and he had disappeared. He had only made his particles move to the Prancing Minotaur Tavern. Like teleportation. But after those tricks he was spent and almost passed out. "a little too much..." He told him self with a light hearty chuckle.

You may speak to me later tonight at the Prancing Minotaur Tavern." A man said from behind Bella-Rosa. She turn just in time to see the man snap his fingers, and disappear. She gasped and looked around the room at everyone else. They were all standing around, staring where the man once was.

Then, realization hit Bella-Rosa like a ton of bricks. 'I'm dead.' She thought. 'I died in my sleep. My heart stopped. Oh my gosh, my disease killed me.' She thought, beginning to hyperventilate. She backed up against the wall, slid down it, and curled into a ball, breathing heavily.

"I'm dead." She whispered to herself. "I died." She began wheezing and coughing hysterically. She rested her head on her knees, wrapped her arms around her curled up legs, and wheezed into her legs, closing her eyes.

Seeing the man in blue disappeared by just snapping his fingers, Ryle's jaw dropped and was stunned. He then attempted to do the same. One, twice, a dozen times he snapped his fingers but nothing happened. "How'd he do that?" he wondered with eyes bulging open in disbelief.
Everything was illogical. Whenever he dream, it always felt like a hallucination where everything, including time, is distorted. But everything around him now seemed solid and clear. He could touch them, feel them, and nothing strange would happen. His movement weren't restricted and the time seemed to travel in a straight line. Everyone seem strange there, especially the girl that was coughing and wheezing on the floor. Ryle decided to ignore her.
With stress building up in his head, finally, he sighed. "Where is this Prancing Minotaur Tavern?" he asked no one in particular, shifting his gaze everywhere, seeing if anyone would answer his question.

Dov listened as Trenton spoke. He was not the least bit bothered by the fact that he was dead. To Dov, this had to be just another part of an inevitable cycle. Still, after seeing the man disappear into thin air, Dov couldn't help his curiosity. Besides, the Prancing Minotaur had to be close.

Standing up, Dov realized that he now wore a cloak. After investigating the cloak for a moment, noting the nice material it was made of, Dov began to walk forward. After about five steps, a small wolf pup appeared just in place to send the man head over heals, landing on his back. He then sat up, looking around for what he tripped on while holding his side which now mysteriously hurt.

The pup soon trotted happily over to Dov, who then looked down at the small animal. "Hey little guy. Are you what tripped me?" Dov said in a childish and loving voice as he picked up and began petting the puppy.

The Innkeeper was getting tired of so many questions. "If you want to speak to Master Trenton, the tavern he spoke of is down the street towards the Evermoon. And before you ask What the Evermoon is, it's the red moon that's always in the eastern sky." The tall bearded Innkeeper said flustered. He then abandoned the newcomers and started handing out room keys.

Trenton sat in The Prancing Minotaur. It was a nice enough building made of a mixture of natural trees, but it had windows of stained glass depicting different scenes in mythology. one window depicted Theseus slaying the minotaur, another of Odin discovering Loki, Heracles defeating the Nemean Lion. It was truly beautiful with the art, ale, and beautiful bar maids. It was everything Trenton loved. He sat expectantly waiting for those people he had earlier met. He sensed a certain destiny about them that seemed to emanate a sort of power and greatness. It was about time for trenton to go on another quest anyway.

The Innkeepers wife strolled by and heard the young mans question. "You don't know!?" She put down the blankets she was carrying and her eyes became glossy. "Excuse my husband, he doesn't like questions." she quickly said out of politeness. "Trenton is the only Dream Weaver in this part of the Dream World. He is extremely powerful, and you just saw him teleport. He has been known to lead men to their fortune and ultimate destiny. He is very solemn and the fact that he asked for you people to meet him is a huge feat. I wouldn't pass it up if I were you." She said before looking around. She was shot a firey look form her husband. "I need to get to work." she said before scuttling off, her long dress collecting dust from the ground as it was dragged behind her.

"Thank you!" said Ryle. He appreciated the information given by the innkeeper's wife. "Fortune and destiny..." murmured Ryle rubbing his chin. Briskly breathing out, he clasped his hands and spoke to the rest who he assumed was the same as him, trapped in the dream world. "Well, I think I'm gonna head there. That man probably knows the way to get back to reality."
Without waiting for a reply, he exited the Blue Rose Inn, and headed out eastwards to the red moon.

He was learning a lot about this place just by listening to these guys. Nathan was still seated at the table listening to the stories and interrupting every now and then to ask a question. It appeared that not everyone who came here had powers but that some people did. He was pretty sure he wouldn't have any since he'd already been gifted youth once again. He figured there was no way he would win the lottery twice. He learned that once you ended up here you were pretty much stuck as no one could tell him how to get back home. He had inquired about what would happen if he were to die here but was just met with laughter. He figured they didn't really have an answer as to where you went and we probably just died for good.

Which was what he was zoned out thinking about when a man stood up and proclaimed to seemingly anyone that we had died and that if we weren't satisfied with this we should meet him in another tavern. He was going to just blow it off, after all he was starting to get a nice buzz and the stories he was gathering were pretty interesting. He had already learned of another town not far from here that he planned to visit in the next few days. Once he figured out how he was going to get some coin in his pocket. He was sure not every place was going to be as friendly as this one and just let him eat, drink and sleep for free. Then again, this was a place made of dreams. But the man who had previously been standing just a few feet from him disappeared with the snap of his fingers. He also noticed that people had quieted down as the man had begun to speak.

At the same time he noticed that a few others had recently come in and seemed as out of place as he did here. There was just something awkward to the way they fit into the people around them. The one who tripped over seemingly nothing before disappearing under the tables for some time. There was a girl who seemed to be having some sort of panic attack and another guy trying to apparently repeated whatever trick the important man had done. "At least I am not the only one new here. "

Once again though the thought poked it's way through his mind. He was dead and that man had absolutely confirmed it. It wasn't as bothersome a thing as you would think. He actually just smiled and thanked whatever force had made this possible. He knew it sure wasn't him and he sure didn't deserve this. But he was interested in at least hearing out what the guy had to say and made to stand. He said his farewell's to the people he had been chatting with and made his way out and through town until he came across one of the others. He was holding a puppy and standing in the entrance to a building he could only assume was the Prancing Minotaur. "Pft, what a name!" he thought as he silently followed the guy in and watched him make a b-line for the table with the man in the blue robe.

Instead of immediately following him he went to the bar and tested to see if he could get a drink or a smoke. He sure hoped that they had cigar's in this world. Even though he'd been given a second chance he wasn't above squandering it in booze and smoke. "Eh, give me a cold glass of yer worst and a fat one." Ordering it up he moved away from the bar in hopes of getting someone to bring it to him without him actually having to pay or explain anything up front. And headed straight to the table seating himself with a nod. "Nathaniel. What's this nonsense we are in?"

On the way to the Prancing Minotaur, Ryle had fallen into a gutter, went into someone else's house, and lost his way. Little that he know, he was already out of town. Now, where am I? he thought, where is this Planking Mirror Toll. Or was it Mirabell? Minstrel? he sighed. Clearly, he had forgotten the name of the tavern. Tracing his step back, he wanted to get back to the Blue Rose Inn, but the attempt only made his more lost and strayed far from his path. Five minutes later, he was in the thick woods, dark and silent in the empty night.

In the shadows a shape stirred. The sky was dark and the mixture of the red Evermoon and the eerie light of the stars above cast a dreadful nature to the area. The beast stirred, stalking it's prey in the bushes and getting in a position behind it's prey. The beast threw away stealth and ran from the bushes roaring fiercely.

Image

The beast was a Manticore. The nightmare of lost travellers in the Middle-East and Mediterranean. Is roared at him and hooked it's tail over it's back in a vicious manner. This evil nightmare wished to see the scared face on it's victim before it dined. It's roar was an attempt to stun and scare his victim into a fearful confusion.

At first, Ryle did not noticed the creature. Only the roar warned him. Naturally, Ryle turned at the direction of the roar and was shocked to see what seemed to be a huge fierce lion. The dark of the night made it hard to see the creature clearly, but he could make out the mane. The dark night concealed the black scorpion tail and the weird black scale like things on its four feet. "Shit!" he cussed. "This place must be Africa! Where else would I be if not Africa!? Where else could a huge lion be!? A zoo probably!? No, I'm pretty sure I'm in Africa!" Fright and panic overwhelms him but he was not going to stand there and wait to see if the creature would attack. He did what most people would do. He darted away at the opposite direction and ran not in a straight line but rather in a random zigzag motion, turning corners around trees for cover from the creature's line of sight and making sure to be silent so not to attract the creature's senses. He was too busy running to pay attention where he was headed. What currently matters was to get to get as far away as possible.

The manticore looked on with pleasure as it's prey fled. The Manticore took off after it into the trees, the manticore watched as it tried to zig zag and maneuver to try and confuse it. It wasn't hard to detect where the creature was because of its massive size. When it landed behind Ryle, a sound was made and the earth shook slightly. Glancing behind him, he saw the creature with its legs bent as a cat would do before lunging forward to catch its prey. If he could, Ryle would get back to town where there would be help, but he was lost and no longer had the slightest idea where the town was. He had no choice but to keep running randomly. To escape and survive from the coming attack, Ryle used the same strategy as before, turning every corners of trees for cover in which the creature may have a hard time getting through and pouncing at him. While he did so, he kept snapping his finger just like he did earlier at the Blue Rose Inn, beads of sweat appeared and trickled down his forehead.

He chased Ryle again, this time utilising his tail, he fired pins of horn out of his tail towards Ryle, like a turret mounted on it's back. The Manticore was trying to either kill him or wound him so the beast could make the kill.

With his back to the creature, Ryle was unaware of its whipping tail unleashing pins of horns towards him. One of the manticores horns flew straight into Ryles calf with great force, plunging into the flesh of his muscle and stopping at the bone. A very painful wound, but not life threatening. Yet. The manticore roared in delight and slowly wandered over to it's now incapacitated prey.

Trenton laughed. "you already know the answer to that Dov." Trenton told him. Then, something was ringing in his head. Trenton himself was just a dream, and there was a Nightmare nearby. He could always sense other dreams, good or evil. This one was far from good.

"Come with me." Trenton said. He grabbed the men by the wrists and his eyes glowed again, like they had when he manipulated the dream realm before. They didn't actually teleport this time, but more of levitated at a very fast pace through objects as if they were air. Trenton stopped when they were just a few seconds into the warp. They had arrived about a five minute walk out of Mantua, beside the crumpled figure of the other young man. "It shouldn't be this close to town!" Trenton cursed.

The manticore recoiled when three new targets appeared, but to it they were more food. The manticore launched out into a sprint and pounced at the man in the front who's eyes glowed with teeth bared and tail ready to sting.

Trenton raised his hand to the beast, but as it pounced, it passed right through him. Trenton himself being a dream couldn't directly effect the creature or even touch it. "Here!" Trenton shouted. With a wave of his hands The Nathaniel, Dov and Ryle were armed with swords and shields. "protect yourselves well. I won't let you die here." Trenton told them, then he dissappeared into thin air.

((footnote: This is an extreme amount of Godmodding on my part, but I can't let Ryle die this far into the RP...And; I want a little more action and excitement. This event will most likely scare the characters into wanting to go home, thus putting our RP in motion. If there is a problem with it I am willing to tweak this post.))

Dov had just grabbed the pup before he was grabbed by Trenton. Next thing he knew, he had a new sword and shield in his hands. That was right before he noticed the, the whatever it was. He could make out the outline of a scorpion's tail and the body of a standard beast, of which he could not tell.

Dov's panic set in, strike at the biggest threat or die because you didn't. One could say that Dov only fled when he thought, like he didn't have a flight instinct, but instead a flight thought. Never the less, Dov charged the manticore with his shield up and his sword at his side. His target was the tail of the beast, planning the use the shield to stop the teeth and claws long enough for Dov to stab the tail near, or at, the poison sack. If he was lucky enough, his strike would leave the sword stuck in the ground and the tail.

Dov's whole logical analysis capabilities had kicked in. His choice of the tail as the first target came with this simple thought, 'The tail has poison that kills within a single hit, the claws and teeth do not.' And the thought for the attacking was 'Have to kill it before it kills me.'

All the while, the pup ran behind a tree, likely too small for the manticore to even notice.
