Backstory Thomas started out a simple yōkai with no name. A Japanese spirit out to cause mischief and strife in the human world. He loved what he did and knew little else. Usually it was him who willed cats to cause mischief while the owners where gone, scratching up furniture, pissing on the carpet, chewing through cat food bags. His antics were pointless when it came down to it. It wasn't until he chanced upon a sick boy that things changed for him. The boy's parents had only just bought home a kitten before he was diagnosed with leukemia and sentence with an early death. Thomas had no understanding of it all at the time. All he saw was a gloomy boy and a baby kitten and he did what occurred to him and borrowed the kitten's body for a time. It was a simple whim of a bored stray but it was an action Tom would embrace for the rest of his existence. For about two months Thomas got to spend day and night with the boy. He played with him, lay with him, let the boy stroke him when he was in pain. He was doing something that truly mattered to him and the boy he was with and it gradually changed something in him. He became something more than a mindless spirit out for chaos.
When the boy's time had run out Thomas was forced to experience something he'd never experienced before. Grief. He acted before thinking and took the boy's soul as it left his body, unable to let it go on to the unknown. "I want to keep you with me, where I can watch you." He then put the boy's soul into the kitten's body not realizing that when he did that the boy would loose all memory of his previous life, forgetting he'd been human in the first place. This didn't matter so much to Thomas, he was a cat spirit after all and understood cats as well as if not far better than humans. The boy had been reborn but he was the same to him. The boy's parents wound up caring for the cat and Thomas lingered to watch as the bond formed helping to heal the wound of loss. Thomas had acted on their lives directly. His actions didn't go unnoticed. Due to his change of heart and direct action on a human spirit he was given the title of a minor deity but greater deities looked down on his actions calling them selfish and with their superior strength and knowledge of the world they punished him for it, locking his ability to manipulate souls away and locking him in a (rather unstable) mortal form. Unless he somehow breaks the lock on his mortal form he'll die as a mortal and be forced to reincarnate for an eternity alternating from a cat to a human with each life, never to gain his abilities and powers again. If he breaks it however, within his current human life span he can go back to being the minor cat deity and through acts on the lives of the humans around him gain followers and a temple of his own to be worshiped and respected.
Other Info:-Despite having risked his own livelyhood for a human Thomas doesn't think very much of humans in general. He spent much of his existence causing them mischief after all.
-He tends to look down on others(like any cat would).
-Thomas is a name he gave himself at some point during the point at which he found himself wandering around in human form.
-He's a Japanese spirit, which is cool isn't it? I'd say it is. He doesn't act very japanese though. He even picked an American sounding name.
-He came here hoping to learn enough about spirits and curses and the like to break the lock on him
-Thomas is technically a minor deity but this does not mean his powers are great at all, even at full power he has limited effect on the world and generally acts through the minds and hearts of cats. None of his powers are meant for conflict and wouldn't protect him in a fight so I suppose his fatal weakness would be his ineptitude in battle. He is only a domestic cat after all, not a lion. He can only dream of great strength and ferocity. His greatest physical traits are the abilities he gains as a feline so perhaps with practice he can be efficient at using those. Good luck finding the fighting drive in him though, he'd much rather sprawl out in the sun and take cat naps all day.
