Matt goes along with just about anything, he isn't rebelious, and even when he is asked to talk he doesn't get angry with the people trying to get him to do something he doesn't want to to. He just sits there, waiting, until they go away. Although he never gets angry, he rarely ever smiles either, and a laugh is just about as rare as hearing him speak. To those who know him well, he is a good friend and listener, and will help out. To those who don't know him, well, lets just say they keep their distance. Matt often seems to be in a whole different world to the rest of us, and notices things that others may not notice, especially in people. He is often a good judge of character and can tell when someone is upset, no matter how hard they try to hide it. Matt is often be bullied by other people, as he isn't particually strong and a easy target. This said, however, he can often find some way to get them back, even if it's not direct. Basically, Matt is a nice person, and cleverer than he looks.
You hardly ever see Matt without a couple of things. His MP3 player, and his sketchbook. Matt loves writing and drawing, it's possibly the only thing he truly enjoys doing, and you can often see him huddled in a corner with his book and pencil, drawing something that just popped into his head that doesnt really make sense to anyone else. His MP3 player is quite an old make, but it has plenty of memory. Each piece of music on there is completly different to eachother. Matt doesn't have a particular music genre he likes, he loves them all. He wears his MP3 player to bed each night, to help him sleep apparently. But considering how loud he keeps it his roommate wonders how it helps at all.
Matt's most important possession is his "writing book," As it says on the cover. In this Matt writes everything to do with his life, what he's feeling, what he thinks about, What he's been doing, everything. It's also where he writes any stories or random things that just comes to his head, much like his sketchbook. Matt will not let anyone touch his writing book, it's the only thing he can truly get angry about. He keeps it with him at all times, ever since he caught a therapist trying to read it. She thought it would be the key to helping Matt with his problems. He didn't see it that way, and almost actually attacked her. That's how serious Matt is about this book. The book is his, and his alone. Many people want to see what is inside it, as it would almost certainly help them to understand Matt.
Matt's parents died when he was eleven years old. When he was told, he shut himself up in his room for week, refusing to come out. Not even for food. After another week of only coming out only for a few minutes each day, he finally agreed to go and live with his aunt and uncle. However, he wouldn't speak to them. Or anyone else, either ignoring anything said to him or answering with a nod or shake of the head. He would never smile, never laugh or even just go and have fun. He would just stay in his room, drawing or writing. After a countless number of doctors and school therapists, Matt's aunt and uncle decided to send him to Morning Wood. It was clear that Matt was not very happy with it, but he didn't protest or refuse to go, and he left the house without a fuss.
Just before he left, Matt's uncle gave him a book. On the cover were the words "Writing Book" and a picture of Matt's parents. Matt smiled for the first time in years, and actually left in a happy sort of state, looking forward to where he was going.
