You don't want to know the real me

Description

Image

Name:
Alek James Ayeris

Nicknames:
Some people call him Al, which he despises.
One girl, back in his childhood, nicknamed him Eir but he has not seen her in years.

Age:
22

Gender:
Male

Appearance:
Alek stands just south of 6'1 with a somewhat lanky build. One might assume that he could reach a full height of 6'2 if he really wanted to straighten himself up. However, his shoulders are almost always hunched over slightly, giving a small curve to his back and a slightly stunted posture. His skin is a shade too pale for normal humans, yet still retains some normal color, most prominent in the summer. He has only one marking on his body. A round sigil that rests right over his heart. He has no recollection of where and when he received it. He isn't even sure whether it is a tattoo or something he was born with.

On first glance, Alek looks about average. He has an angular jaw line that is still somewhat rounded to give him a softer appearance. His eyes are a dark brown color, shrouded under heavy brows that can easily give him the appearance of a vicious predator or an amused school boy. His hair is naturally black and curly. Alek keeps it at a medium length where it has grown out enough to be straightened a little by gravity but not long enough to get in his way. It usually looks unkempt as he only pushes it back out of his face and leaves it where it may land. More often than not he sports a shadow of a stubble, only going clean shaven on rare occasions.

Personality:
Alek is a tough person to fully figure out, mostly because he never speaks about himself at length even when prompted. His exterior personality is a fabricated act, meant to keep prying eyes out of his personal life. Underneath the facade lies a completely different person. One that is guarded from the world around him. One that had been playing this game for so long that it is almost natural to him to simply project a different persona instead of opening up his true self.

As a result, he can be rather reserved, preferring the sound of other peoples' voices to his own. He has incredible control over his temper, having spent most of his life learning to suppress his emotions. That is not to say that he doesn't get angry. He simply won't act on it. He is the type to turn around and walk away from an argument when he deems that his opponent has strayed into ego territory. If he ever does lash out, it is usually quick and with devastating results.

The mask that most people see when they meet him is carefree and laid back. He jokes around and has a tendency to come off as a flirt even when all he is doing is being polite. He never pursues any friendships and is terrible at anything related to romance. He has come to the conclusion that there is no hope for him to ever have a normal friendship or relationship with the secrets he harbors. As a result, he doesn't ever bother himself with anything of the sort, preferring to not linger in anyone's life for long.

Family Life:
Alek doesn't know anything about his birth family. He's only been told that his father had abandoned them before he was even born and his mother soon died in childbirth. As a baby, he was passed down to an orphanage and adopted by his current family. He grew up with a mother, a father, and a younger sister, Katelyn. His foster parents could not have kids of their own, so they chose to adopt according to the old family traditions. An older boy and a younger girl where all they wanted to find a sense of normalcy.

While Katelyn adapted well, however, Alek never accepted the fact that this was his home. He knew, from an early age, that he was different and that he just didn't belong. He tried to accept the love shown to him by his foster family but it always seemed fake and unnatural. Thus, he became the black sheep and retreated into his own mind in search of an escape. It was no surprise when, right after graduating high school, he chose to move out of the house, opting for his own place on the other side of town. He rarely speaks with his parents now, though Katelyn takes care to visit him and keep in touch often. She is possibly the only person in his life that knows him best, even if she doesn't know all of his closely guarded secrets. Alek refuses to burden her with them.

Dreams:
Alek dreams of what any person in his situation would. Of a normal life, free of his curse. He wants freedom. To not feel trapped by society's outreach. He doesn't want to have to hide secrets and corner himself away into his own mind for the sake of those around him. For the sake of his own safety.

More than this, he is constantly searching for his place in the world. He wants to figure out what it is that he meant to do in this life and then pursue it. So far all he has been able to find are interests but he is looking for the passion in an endeavor and a clear career path.

Likes:
Alek likes solitude. Those blissful times when he doesn't have to put on a mask and surround himself with false smiles and stories. He loves reading and can often be found stalking the aisles of the local library or else seated in a far corner of a coffee shop. He is also a bit of a writer and a poet, though he had never shown his work to anyone before. It is unlikely he ever will. Oddly enough, he enjoys the company of chatty people. The more another person talks, the more Alek feels at ease to simply sit back and listen. When he isn't pressured to reveal much about himself, he tends to like the person more. This is mostly why he doesn't mind hanging out at the local bar every once in a while.

Alek also likes being outside in the rain and witnessing violent thunder storms. Not surprisingly, he is also a fan of critters such as spiders and snakes.

Dislikes:
On the flip side, crowds tend to annoy him in the same way that being pestered about his past signals a downward spiral in a conversation. Alek has never been a fan of beaches, malls, and fares for this reason. He also has a tendency of staying away from the part of town where he grew up. He doesn't like revisiting old memories. He doesn't like the past at all, in fact.

Alek doesn't like being kept in the dark about anything. If he senses that someone is not telling him everything, he is more likely than not to continue asking about it until either the person in question snaps at him or else Alek gets aggravated enough to demand an answer. He is aware that this is hypocritical and he never seems to care.

Finally, he despises the curse that he has been living with his entire life. He has never told anyone of it even though some almost found out on their own in the past. Almost. Alek fears what he might have been capable of doing if his secret got out. He does not wish to kill but he knows that he might if the knowledge passed into the wrong hands.

Bio:
Alek does not remember exactly what occurred around the beginning of his life. He's been told that his father had disappeared before his birth and his mother died in labor. As a baby, he was given to an orphanage and remained there for about a year before he was adopted into a new family. His foster mom worked as a secretary and her husband helped run an engineering firm. All in all, the small family had a fairly good financial standing. They could not afford a large mansion, but the two story house where they settled was an excellent home for all.

It was two years later when they adopted a girl, Katelyn, and Alek got a baby sister. With a small family unit assembled, there was nothing that could go wrong. All except for Alek.

He was barely 5 years old when it first became apparent that there was something different about the boy. He noticed that sometimes, when he was especially annoyed or angry over something, his body would begin to shift and change. His finger nails would grow and mutate into something akin to talons. Sometimes his hair would turn a few shades lighter or else go white completely. However, these changes fell apart quickly once anger gave way to shock. He found that it was hard to control the transformations. Even more so, they terrified him. He would look in the mirror in the morning and find a pair of crimson eyes staring back, causing him to shriek and force his parents to come running in to find out what was the matter.

One day it got worse. Katelyn walked into his room with a toy train that Alek was particularly fond of. He didn't like her touching it and got unreasonably upset. When he went to yank it out of her grip, though, he brushed his arm against hers. There was a surge of energy that passed between them and the next thing he knew Kately was on the floor, unconscious. Despite himself, Alek knew instantly what had happened. Somehow, he had stolen his baby sister's energy, pulling her into a sleep. When Katelyn finally came to, it took a lot of careful coaxing to convince her that she had bumped her head on the chair and that Alek had meant her no harm. To this day, Alek isn't sure if she ever fully believed him.

As months and years stretched on, the young boy was first placed in kindergarten and then into elementary school. Even as a child, after seeing Katelyn's reaction to his curse, he made a decision to never tell a soul about it. He didn't understand it still and would not for a few more years, but little by little he became less afraid and more fascinated by it. By the time he hit middle school, he had started doing his own research on his abilities. The most he found were demons and gods of myth and legend. Tricksters, psychic vampires, and beings who could project events into reality that were never meant to take place. Some of it seemed to fit, but the rest he doubted very much. All through middle school he explored what he could do. He discovered, much to his dismay, that his power stretched further than he had previously thought.

Despite the fact that he started to act out, and that his parents worried for him constantly, Alek did well for himself in school. He had friends, some closer than others, and he had descent grades. For a while he tried to live with with his powers. To see them as some form of a twisted gift that fate bestowed upon him. He began using his abilities slowly around others, passing them off as simple pranks. Being able to act as if he was hypnotizing his victim while draining just enough energy to place them into a semi-sleep. Making teachers tired whenever he felt like the class could use a movie day. It was all harmless fun until one day he took it too far. Some kids at his school had gotten too suspicious of Alek's claims to stardom. The teachers began to question him and some of the students got spooked when he threw out an empty warning that he could choke them if he wanted to. It was banter of a child, but it was taken seriously and he was suspended for two weeks.

After the ordeal that followed with his parents, Alek shut himself off from others. No longer did he see any amusement in his abilities. They were no longer a gift but rather a curse. A burden he carried, for what reason he knew not. He attempted to ignore it but didn't feel fully complete without it. This began his descent into a darker persona that his family took the brunt of. He already learned, as a child, that he had been adopted, and wondered if perhaps his birth family would be able to answer his questions. His mother, however, was dead. His father was no where to be found. Alek didn't even know the man's name.

Throughout high school, Alek gradually learned to project a friendlier persona than he felt anyone deserved from him. As a teenager, he began to feel more and more superior to the normal people around him. If he chose to bring harm to any of them, what could they do? He felt stronger, braver, and more invincible than he had in his entire life. Yet he continuously pushed this aside, the fear of what could happen if the town found out about his curse overwhelming his desire to squash the same town. So with a friendly mask, he finished out school and soon after moved out of the house that he had lived in most of his life.

He found a place for himself on the opposite side of town. With some help from Katelyn, he also found a temporary job, working in a book store. He didn't mind the arrangement as on his time off he could lounge around with a book in his lap, hoping desperately that the infernal bell would not chime above the door of the store, alerting him to a new customer. So far he has managed to stay out of trouble and has evaded any serious inquiries into his personal life. However, he can sense that this quiet time in his life is about to come to an end.

What is your otherworld entity:
Something akin to a psychic vampire. However, he has no need for the energy he collects.

Transformation Appearance:
Alek's appearance varies according to how much power he is attempting to use at any one time. Small pranks do not alter his appearance. However, as he applies more power and gains more energy, his typically black hair turns into a shocking white color. His eyes turn red and his skin takes on a pale blue hue that is similar to a dead body. Other characteristics tend to include longer finger nails that turn dark and rotten. In times of extreme stress on his mind and abilities, his skin has been known to morph into a pure black color, cracking and oozing blood. If this happens, he gains the full power to drain a person completely of their energy, instantly killing the body and sending the soul onto the after-life.

Power:
Alek's main power is being able to drain the energy, or the life-force, of another being through physical contact with the body. His secondary power is heightened speed, which easily compliments his abilities and shapes his style of attack. His offense does not rely on brute strength, but rather the speed and his ability to get close enough to his enemy without being knocked out first. Once he has you within arm's reach, you best move quickly.

The flip side of his power is that he is also capable of transferring some of his own energy into another body if someone is in need and he chooses to help them. Unfortunately, Alek is not aware of this and has never thought to try it.

Another ability he is not aware of is regeneration. As long as he has access to enough energy, he cannot be killed.

So begins...

"But you have to come! It's the party of the year," the girl whined, bouncing lightly on the balls of her feet. Her bright red hair was slowly starting to escape its confines behind her ears, slipping over her shoulders to get into her eyes again. Mindlessly, she reached up to tuck the stubborn strands away again and pouted as she received absolutely no response from her brother, who was sitting behind the check-out desk in his casual work clothes. One foot propped up on the counter, the other crossed over the first lazily, he merely furrowed his brow at the book that was open in his lap.

“Melissa will be there,” the red-head cooed. Alek's gaze finally tore away from the page at this, traveling up to look at Katelyn, who seemed to brighten at even the small bit of recognition. She was much smaller than him, yet held much more energy in her small body than Alek could often deal with. Sometimes it annoyed him. Mostly he found it endearing, though. They were not related by blood and he had no real responsibility to her as far as he was concerned. They did grow up together, though, and she had become the person he tended to trust the most. That counted for a lot in his mind.

Now he sat in silence, studying her bright smile from under his brows for what appeared to be too long of a time. He tried to gauge just how serious she had been about her statement. Very serious, it seemed. He let out a loud snort in response.

“You're kidding. Right?” he asked her. Melissa? She thought she could drag him out for Melissa?

“Come on,” Katelyn groaned. Alek was about to return to his reading when she hopped up to reach over the counter. Next thing he knew, his book was snatched away and his foot slid off of the counter, dropping to the floor under the sudden weight that he hadn't been expecting.

“Kat!” Alek protested. She slammed the book shut before he could even mention marking the page that he had been on. There was a playful grin tugging at her lips. A tell-tale sign of what was coming.

Almost in unison, brother and sister tore off from their spots. Katelyn high-tailed it down the horror book section while Alek took a leap over the counter. His feet barely touched the floor before he was running after her. She almost made the back door, but she had to slow down in order to open it. Alek just about all but tackled her, his arm wrapping around her waist to lift her off her feet. She squealed in his hold as both of them tumbled to the ground. Alek attempted to snatch the book away from her but she held it out as far away from him as she could get, laughing.

“Say you'll come to the party!”

“Kat!”

“Say it!”

“I'm serious!”

“Say it!”

“FINE! I'LL COME!” Alek surrendered. Katelyn's laughter was almost infectious, causing him to smirk at her as he reached for the book once more. Still, she held it at arm's length.

“You'll come where?” she questioned, causing Alek to roll his eyes at her. Typical Katelyn. Get her way and still push for more.

“I'll come to the party,” Alek hissed. Katelyn cast him a triumphant smile and relinquished the book to him almost at once.

It was good that she did, for the next moment a bell sounded over the door and a group of feet shuffled in from the outside. First customers of the day. Joy. Alek glanced to his sister before moving to stand. He offered her his hand, pulling her up as well and the two simply stood there picking stray dust and dirt from their clothes for a moment. Katelyn was still giggling softly and Alek had a bemused smirk on his face.

It was naturally Katelyn who spoke up first.

“So... Friday night, then,” she smiled. Alek sighed but he had already made the promise so there was no backtracking now. He would have to be fake and social that night.

“Can't wait,” he feigned an air of enthusiasm, earning himself a pat on the shoulder. Katelyn was certainly not buying it and he didn't expect her to. “Gotta get back to work.”

As Alek headed back over to tend to the group of teens who were standing around at the front of the book store, Katelyn gave a quick wave to him and bounded out. She had better things to do with her day. Alek was stuck at the store, however, until his replacement came at noon.

He usually liked to have his weekends to himself, but someone had taken an emergency day off so Alek was woken up for the tedious task of opening the store before the sun even had a chance to rise. He wasn't looking forward to the next few hours. His only reprieve was the knowledge that Saturday mornings tended to be quiet and lazy. The crowd wouldn't pick up until around noon and by then he would be free to go and stalk around town to his heart's content.

He could do this.

Viridiana, or Vivi, as she would have people call her, woke up that day later than usual. She normally rose soon after her brother, Julius, at around 5:40. Even on a Saturday she awoke earlier than others, but today was different. 6:53 was what the numbers on her digital clock read. She didn't mind too much though, she had had a particularly nice dream about dancing with fairies and nymphs in a lush forest clearing. There had been a small clear, brook that had bubbled nearby that mixed with the chirps of the birds and the voices of the company she had all made a beautiful song. Vivi sighed, still hearing the melody in her head. ‘If only it would have never ended...’ She thought as she got up.

She started her morning with the usual show of hygiene; taking a shower, brushing her teeth and hair, the usual for most people in the world. She then went to her room and chose her attire for the day. After deciding on a cute yellow sundress that had small accents of pink, she hummed her way to the kitchen. ‘I wonder where Julius is…I have yet to have seen him this morning’ Vivi thought as she made a simple breakfast of toast and OJ. She shrugged it off, knowing her brother could take care of himself. ‘This could be a good chance to see if the shop has any new books for me,’ With a nod to herself, she washed off her plate and grabbed a dry erase marker off the stainless steel refrigerator. She knew her brother wouldn’t be happy if she just up and left, so she wrote a quick message stating she was going out shopping on the dry erase board. Once done, she grabbed her mini flower wallet and jacket then walked out the door towards the shopping district.

It didn’t take Vivi long to get to the small mom and pop book shop she has grown accustomed to. She had been a customer at the shop for nearly two years. She remembered the first time she had come in, she had been looking for a gift for Julius and the first thing she thought of was books. The owners of the shop had been so helpful that day that she ended up coming back looking for more. In the end Vivi became a regular customer, always coming in looking for new things.

“Hi Alek,” Vivi said cheerfully as she walked up to the man at the front counter, giving him bright smile. “How are you? Is your sister doing well? Wait a second; aren’t you not supposed to be working today” Alek, the clerk at the shop was someone she had also grown accustomed to. She always seemed to visit whenever he was working, so she made small talk with him whenever she was checking out. She had also met Katelyn a few times in passing. Although the age difference was big, the two girls sometimes talked. “Well I won’t keep you from your reading,” Vivi nodded to the book then turned around to look down the nearest aisle for nice book to get for Julius’ growing library. A couple minutes passed of Vivi just leisurely browsing until it happened.

Let’s...play...

Vivi looked up, turning her head in both directions looking for whoever had said that. Seeing no one she looked around the next few aisles only to find that Alek and herself were the only ones in the shop. “Must have been my imagination…” she mumbled to herself then continued her browsing.

Come on...It will be fun...

Vivi lifted her head once again, only to get the same results. She walked up to the counter, and looked at clerk. “Alek you wouldn’t happen to know if this shop is haunted would you?” was the best she could muster without sounding crazy. “You know what never mind…” she said laughing slightly as if she were only joking.

I. WANT. TO. PLAY!

Vivi screamed aloud, falling to her hands and knees as an immense pain blossomed in her chest. She clutched her heart with one hand, closing her eyes trying to make the pain go away. Her heart felt as though it was being torn out of her chest. The pain was so strong that she didn’t notice her hair grow at least three times its normal length, or the fact that small vines began sprouting through the tiled floor around her hands. “Wh-whats happening…to me….” She said aloud. Her eyes were watering she was shaking uncontrollably, but the pain in her chest seemed to have no end.

It’s my turn to play now...

The voice chuckled as one last wave of pain gripped her. She screamed once more then suddenly when quiet and unmoving. All was still, until a small childish laugh broke the silence. Vivi looked up at Alek, but her once chocolate brown eyes were now a deep shade of orchid. She smiled as usual, but it was different. Instead of being the sweet, happy smile the girl usually gave, it was now a dark, twisted smile that only meant trouble.

“Alek! Let’s play a game of tag!” By this point she was standing, she was just out of his reach, and slowly inching further. “Rules of the game are as followed; you try and catch me. If you don’t, I destroy all of the merchandise, and you lose your job as well as potentially doing jail time! Fun huh?” She giggled devilishly. “…And the game starts NOW!”

Vivi took off down the nearest aisle grabbing books at the speed of light ripping random pages out of them, then dropping them to the ground. She ran down the tarot card aisle laughing joyously, as she did a sudden burst of wind hit scattering the cards; making it hard to see as they rained down. She paused to revel in the madness, catching a card at random.

“As the lightning crashes, and the heavens meet earth, the mighty tower falls, leaving chaos in its wake. Conflict and calamity is your future Alek, be ready.” Vivi said looking him in the eye, holding the card up for him to see. She stood there for a second long, smirking dangerously. She then quickly turned again, only to trip on the edge of a shelf. She then rolled to a halt in the corner of the shop. As she tried to right herself and start moving again, Vivi knew she was done for.

It took Alek a grand total of forty minutes to sort out the group of teenagers, who had been under the impression that the store sold audio CD's for text books. They insisted on their existence, and one of the girls continuously complained that she simply didn't have the time to sit and read. Instead she preferred to listen to it in her car. By the end of it, Alek had looked up their requests online, put in an order for delivery, and took down their phone numbers so he could call them when the CD's arrived.

Finally, the door closed behind them and Alek settled into his chair behind the counter, nursing a headache from the sheer and utter stupidity of it all. He hated putting up with these humans when he could easily end them all. Instead, they spoke to him as if he owed them something that they were too lazy to acquire on their own. Over the years he had gotten good at hiding his true feelings. He knew that his survival depended on the ignorance of those around him. If they learned of his abilities, he would likely be done for. He was forced to live in the darkness of his own mind, not knowing what he was or why he had these powers. It frustrated and angered him on most days. Today was no different.

Alek snapped out of his recollections just as the bell over the door chimed. He blinked, realizing that he hadn't even opened his book again since he got it back from his sister. It was sitting next to the register, forgotten for the moment. Bobbing her way merrily toward the counter, though, was Vivi.

Alek had come to know the girl ever since he started working at the store. She was the epitome of sweetness and sugar as far as he was concerned. Always trying to make small talk and always eager for some help finding new books. She was an easy customer, so Alek had learned to manage a small soft spot for her.

“Hey Short Stuff,” he greeted. The smile that touched his face was a brotherly one, but completely fake at the same time. If she were to look very closely, she would have seen a tinge of red outlining his irises. It was only present for a moment before he blinked and it was gone.

What followed next was the usual barrage of questions.

”How are you?”

“Good”

“Is your sister doing well?”

“Yeah, you just missed her, actually.”

“Wait a second; aren't you not supposed to be working today?”

“Garret had to call out. I'm filling in,” Alek somehow managed a playful glare at the last one, his eyes narrowing. “Why? Do you like him better than me?” he challenged. If there was one thing Alek was good at, it was acting. Despite how he felt on the inside, his outer mask never failed him.

It wasn't long before Vivi was off, flitting around the book sections and leaving him in his own peace and quiet. He had no objections. Choosing to try and continue his own reading, he grabbed his book and leafed through it in search of the page that he had been on.

He had just found it again when Vivi came back, asking him about the store being haunted. A single eyebrow arched as he glanced back up at her. He was still a little confused as to what brought this on when the girl dropped to her knees, screaming in pain. Alek was on his feet in an instant, dropping his book on the chair and hurrying around the counter to her side. He grabbed his phone as he went, ready to dial 911 to call an ambulance.

“Viv, what's wrong?” he questioned in hopes of getting some form of an answer. There was something going on, though. This wasn't a random pain she was experiencing. She was also transforming right in front of him.

As used to his own powers as Alek was by now, he still wasn't ready for what followed. His eyes narrowed at the newly transformed girl in front of him as she rose to stand, addressing him in a way he had never heard her do. His right hand inched back toward the counter to set the phone back down slowly. He barely even moved when she took off at top speed, grabbing and tearing whatever books she could get her hands on. All he could really think of was the fact that someone else in this town was not human. She had powers. Destructive powers.

By the time the initial shock wore off, Vivi had made it all the way to the card section of the store and was pausing there to gloat about her little game. It was then that Alek finally registered exactly what had happened. His main priority now was stopping it. He wasn't going to let her tear up the entire store. Even more so, he wasn't going to let her, what he assumed to be, alter-ego cause destruction should she leave the building and set herself upon unsuspecting humans.

It was almost instantaneous. His typically unruly black hair turned white. The dark red color bled back into his eyes. His skin, pale as it was, took on hints of a blue hue. He took off after her, momentarily losing sight as she was swallowed in a flutter of cards.

She tripped and fell. That was more than what Alek needed to catch up to her. He was on her in an instant. His right hand wrapped around her waist to pull her back against him, the other weaving into her now long hair to keep her from fighting him too much. He swore rather colorfully to himself in the process, hauling her up and flinging his back against wall. His hold on her was cemented. He was able to reach past her waist, grabbing one of her wrists. Mentally, he pulled on her energy, willing it out of her body and into his own. It was young and carefree, but there was a darkness within it that he had never felt in anyone else before.

Holding her closely, Alek was able to support the girl's frame as it grew limp in his arms. His urge to kill her was at bay. He merely took enough energy to calm her and put her into a long sleep, akin to the low energy levels of humans just before they succumb to rest in the evenings. It wasn't until he felt her breathing even out that he let himself slide down the wall, depositing her body on the floor gently. He was still trying to figure out what had occurred, his mind racing with different possibilities.

Had she been sent to kill him? Was she possessed? Did she have information of the supernatural world that had been elusive to him all these years? Should he help her or kill her, lest she become a danger to others? And since when has he cared about other peoples' well being aside from perhaps Katelyn's?

Alek shook his head and looked around. Vivi had gotten her hands on a total of three book aisles. There were disheveled book remains around them. The card section was a clear disaster. He didn't know how this could be explained and for the moment, frankly, didn't care. He allowed himself to shift back into his human form and ran his fingers through his hair to brush the mass back away from his face. Quickly, he pushed himself up to stand, stepping over Vivi to get to the counter and to the phone.

“Yeah, Sam?” he spoke only once a female voice replied to his call on the other line. “It's Alek at the store. There is an emergency here. I need you to come as soon as you can. I'll explain later.”

Without waiting, he hung up and turned his attention back to Vivi with a sigh. He wasn't sure what he was supposed to do with her now. First things first, however. He needed to get her away from here. Walking over, he bent down and gathered her up into his arms before making his way out the back door and into the small lot where his car was parked. It was separated from the main street, tucked away between two buildings, and thankfully no one was there at the moment.

Alek placed the girl into the back seat and ducked behind the wheel, starting up the vehicle and pulling out. He was on the main road in moments, not entirely sure where he was headed but directing his car toward his apartment that was only a few blocks away from the store.

"Ngh...." Vivi goaned as she shifted in her sleep. She stretched out slightly then snuggled deeper into her bed, slowly waking her body, but not opening her eyes just yet. She had just had the most restful sleep in while, along with a strange dream. She had watched herself destroy the local book store. "Such a weird dream...." she said, as she tried to stretch her arms out, something stopped her.

"What the...." she opened her eyes and looked down her arms. They were tied together with some kind of fabric; a scarf from the looks of things. She looked around frantically and say she was in a foreign room. She was laying on a plain couch, with her head on one of the arms. A small coffee table sat to the side of her and past that a T.V. was on, airing the local news.

'I've been kidnapped! But who would do this to me? And more importantly WHY?' she thought scared. She stayed on the couch and tried not to move too much, while desperately trying to wiggle her hand free from the bindings.

Oh don't tell me you forgot about our little escapade. A voice said mockingly, a smile could be heard in the tone of what she said.

'What do you mean? Who are you?' Vivi asked the voice in her head. She knew it was not a good sign at all to be talking to herself, but at least it was something else to think about other than the situation she was in.

Who am I? The voice laughed. Seems like Mr. Tight-ass might have taken more than he should have, to not even know your own face she chided.

That's when the events came back to mind. It hadn't been a dream, she really had destroyed the book shop. She had cause so much trouble, yet she hadn't. Vivi knew she hadn't done it. She remembered watching her body do it yes, but she couldn't control herself. She had watched in the back of her mind as everything went to hell. Just then the T.V. caught her attention.

"Breaking news has just come in. A local book store run by Mr. and Mrs. Thorn has been robbed and vandalized. We go to news respondent Thomas Short who his more information about this horrendous event" The news cast continued with interviews with shop owner. She had done horrible things, and since he was the cashier at the time, Alek would get suspected.

"Alek!" Vivi said sitting up straight, completely forgetting about her hostage situation. Her eyes teared up, as she thought about how many problems she had caused him. She lifted her hands to her face, only to remember she was captive. "This is what I deserve I guess...Its only right..." She cried into hands; hating herself, desperately wishing to restart the day.

Alek's head snapped to the side at the sound of his phone ringing. The jingle was too merry for his taste, but somehow he had never bothered to take ten seconds to change it since he had gotten the phone about a year ago. He reached out and automatically hit 'ignore' on the screen. This was the third time that Sam tried to call him. His guess was that she had gotten to the store to discover the ruins, but he wasn't ready to give her an explanation just yet. He was more than happy to let the news cover it as a robbery for the time being. Inwardly, he was thankful that the store did not have security cameras. Everything would have been exposed otherwise.

After leaving the store, Alek didn't really know where to go. Magical beings didn't exactly walk into his life every day and cause chaos. Where was he to take Vivi after he knocked her out? The hospital? The idea was laughable. It was two blocks over when he realized that he was heading to his own place and decided that he may as well shelter her there until he could learn more about what occurred.

He carried Vivi up to his apartment, ducking out of sight of wandering neighbors, and laid her on the couch to finish her rest. He knew she would be awake soon. He didn't know, however, which version of her he would get. As much as the idea made him feel like a creep, he knew he had to do something. So he took the extra precaution of tying her hands together in case she decided to try and tear his apartment apart next.

Now, as the news declared a robbery at the book store, Alek sat off to the side on a window sill where he had a good view of the street bellow through the only gap in the curtains. One of his legs was propped up on the sill, an arm resting across it. His other leg was hanging off the side lazily to touch the floor. He spent a while simply watching the life out on the street, attempting to pick out anyone who may have been acting strange. A part of him was expecting someone else to show up. The other wondered if he had finally snapped.

As he flicked his phone to silent mode, getting irritated with the constant ringing, he heard Vivi shift on the couch. Turning his head, his dark gaze settled on her instead. He watched in silence as she woke up and slowly eased herself up to sit. Most of her thoughts he could read on her face almost instantly. It was as plain as day. The confusion that shifted to distress. It was an instant reminder that she was merely a kid. He supposed the news didn't help her consciousness either.

While Vivi buried her face in her hands, noticeable sniffling now coming out from between them, Alek stood from the sill. He walked over to the coffee table, his stride almost too casual for the situation. There, he retrieved the remote control that was resting on top of two books, and switched the TV off, leaving them effectively in silence.

Silently, he replaced the remote in its original spot and from there it only took three carefully placed strides to circumvent the coffee table. He sat down on it directly across from Vivi, placing himself face to face with her, resting his forearms on his knees and leaning forward slightly. There was some residual anger in the gaze that he leveled her with. She's just a kid he had to remind himself. Still, no normal kid could do what he had seen. If she was like him, he wanted answers. Unfortunately for both of them, he had no gentle ways of asking for them at the moment.

"The scarf is just a precaution," he told her. His voice was quiet but still somewhat rougher than the tone he generally used with her or any other customer and there was no friendly smile to speak of. "I can remove it but if you try anything I will put you back to sleep. Do you understand?" His eyebrows furrowed before he dropped his gaze to look her over. She didn't look hurt and somewhere at the back of his mind he was glad for it. It was enough that he had a restrained kid in his apartment. He didn't need her to be injured as well. The entire situation was insane. He forced himself to not linger on the technicalities, instead looking back up at her to voice the one question that had been on his mind for the past hour.

"What are you?"

Vivi sniffled and cried to herself silently, until she heard shuffling and the T.V. turn off. She looked up and saw a pair of dark eyes staring right at her.

"The scarf is just a precaution, I can remove it but if you try anything I will put you back to sleep. Do you understand?" Alek said in a not so nice tone. Vivi whimpered as she nodded quickly. She was not used to this sort of treatment, the it scared her quite a bit, but she did understand why he would need to tie her up. Vivi tried to relax, knowing Alek had no reason to hurt her, but the way looked and spoke to her did nothing to ease her worries. She was trying to think of something to say, to let him know how desperately sorry she was, when he spoke first

"What are you?"

"I-I don't know" her eyes began to water again. Vivi tried wiping them away, but they would just be replaced by more droplets. "I'm sorry Alek, I don't know what happened to me. I-I couldn't control my own body, and-and-and there was this voice-there IS this voice that keeps saying mean things and I can't make her stop! I didn't wanna do it I swear! B-but I-" she blubbered on and on crying her eyes out trying to express how sorry she was.

As Vivi tried to explain small vines began crawling up her legs from the floors boards. Tiny green leaves sprouted from the vines as they climbed higher and higher wrapping around her and the couch she sat on. When she finally noticed the little plants growing randomly, she jumped to the other side of the couch pulling her legs beside her. She stared in horror as the vines began to bloom small white flowers. The smell of jasmine, the scent that always calmed her now wafted through out the room.

"How...?" she whispered while looking between the flowers and her 'captor'.

Alek's eyebrows drew together as he watched Vivi stutter through her tears to try and explain, failing at giving him the response that he had been looking for. He was too focused on her, however, to even notice the vines that were sprouting from the floor until she had jumped away from them. The scent of the blooming flowers reached his mind first and then he saw them, winding their way up the couch steadily. Unlike Vivi, though, Alek barely reacted. He only looked on with an evenly distributed mix of confusion, frustration, and weariness.

"You have powers," he muttered the obvious. It was more of a confirmation to himself than an explanation to her. What he had grown to know as his curse was now plaguing another, albeit in a very different way.

He drew in a breath and then forced his gaze away from the plants, carefully rearranging his features to obscure any trace of anger from his eyes. Instead, he looked back at her steadily with false comfort. It was the best he could muster despite the fact that he felt dull sympathy for the shell-shock that she must have been going through. Vivi clearly had no idea what was going on and it would do no good to frighten her further. He knew this from first-hand experience.

"Ok, Vivi? Look at me," he instructed her. "It's ok, calm down. Everything will be alright. Do you understand? We will figure this out. I can help you with this. I just need you to focus on me and breath. Can you do that?" he coaxed her gently, watching her carefully for any sign of trouble.
