Nathan Crane

Federation Marine Corps First Lieutenant - Operative/Engineer aboard the F.S.S. Legacy

0 · 423 views · located in Arcturus System

a character in “Nebula's Dawn: Lance of Liberty”, as played by VindicatedPurpose

Description

"They used to tell me that if a war started, I would be the first guy to die, and that was coming from all the guys that died first. I'm not a betting man, but even I have to say I like those odds."

Name (With Preferred Pronunciation): Nathan Crane (Nay-thun Crayne)

Age: 29

Place of Birth: New Eretria, Feranel System

Gender: Male

Occupation: Federation Armed Forces - Marine Corps: Operative/Engineer aboard the F.S.S. Legacy

Rank (If Applicable): First Lieutenant

Appearance: Nathan has brown eyes and light brown hair which is always unkempt, probably because he kept the Marine barbers from touching his hair after he was upgraded to a Special Operations Commando. As a Caucasian, his skin is white. He shaves in order to "keep up his appearances for the ladies," or so he claims to fellow squad mates. In combat he is always decked out in his trademark modified combat armor with two singular glowing lights for his eyes to see through, as well as some other hidden modification for every mission. Modifications include enhanced ocular zoom, a jet thruster that allows for limited airborne capabilities, leg thrusters to allow for skiing, a tactical strike marker via the ocular modifications, and etc.

Height: 5 ft. 10 in.

Weight: 152 lbs.

Personality

General: Nathan is generally a carefree and jovial kind of guy, who has almost been killed on multiple occasions due to the negligence that resulted. Prior to becoming a Marine, he was quite the flirt and by extension, a ladies' man. Female squad mates claim that he still is, though his relaxed nature usually puts a cap on anything that might be deemed..."conduct unbecoming of a marine." One could say he's never scared of what is waiting for him, and he usually runs, actually, walks, headlong and relaxed into the fray. Many an officer say that there's a certain providence that protects him from his blunders, but Commander Ives knows that Nathan is a soldier more than capable of taking care of himself.

He is only laid-back in order to hide a warrior's pain. Nathan could never really take death very well, especially when it happened to people he knew. This is antithetical to Nathan's occupation as a Marine, but he only joined in the first place so he could see the galaxy. Getting into Special Operations was pure luck as many would have him believe and it leaves Nathan sorely lacking confidence in his abilities. However, Nathan still tries to overcome this and prove to others that he is capable of being among the few and the proud.

As an engineer, Nathan is adept at making modifications and enhancements to weapons and armor, and he can probably rig an explosive using basic equipment. That last part, he studied from the Marines' Field Manual, so every Marine should normally know how to create an explosive with the standard materials that the government gives them. Apparently not, as Nathan later found, most Marines were more likely to rely on materials that they could find, and usually whip one up as an improvised device. Though telling to the Marines' long standing tradition of ingenuity, equipment should not go to waste. Nathan, exemplifies both these attitudes, making use of anything to modify, or enhance his suit of armor. Despite his lax attitude, he knows what he's talking about when it comes to technology...sometimes.

Likes: The ladies (beyond normal), taking it easy and laying back, R&R

Dislikes/Phobias: Team mates dying, combat, corny jokes

Quirks/Idiosyncrasies: He calls his carbine "Kayla"

History

Nathan was born on New Eretria, a Federation Middle Rim world that was fairly industrialized and populated. Nathan's father was a merchant, while his mother worked as a teacher. His family managed even during economic crises, which allowed Nathan to go to college. Despite this, Nathan never really had any job that he really wanted to do.

That was when he looked to the Federation Marine Corps, which advertised a life of travel and adventure, which intrigued Nathan. He decided to promptly join these men and women, and he received blessings from his parents. They believed Nathan would be fine, due to the relative calm of the period, and supported his choice to join the Marines.

Due to completing academic courses in an institution of higher learning, Nathan started out as a Corporal instead of a Private. From there he worked his way to a Sergeant. Nathan decided to apply for a job in Special Operations, and thus went through the rigorous examination at the annual Marine Corps summit. Examiners noted the potential and decided to upgrade him to a Special Operations capable unit in the Marines, the 572nd Orbital Deployment Assault.

After two years of training with the 572nd, Nathan's squad captain was killed in a training accident. He was replaced by Adrian Ives, and the two developed a bond of brotherhood, with Nathan assuming a right hand man position. It was during this period that Insurgency flared up once more in the Middle and Outer Rims, and the 572nd was deployed to quell the upstart rebellions. Nathan and Adrian in particular were then selected among a field of other exceptional candidates to join Special Operations. Ives and Crane were then transferred to Kaze Maxwell's team aboard the Victus.

After serving with Maxwell's team, Adrian was assigned his own ship, the Legacy, and was allowed to select candidates to be apart of his permanent crew. The first person he chose was Nathan, and immediately afterwards they were given an assignment directly by director Vice Admiral Fontaine on the Joint Special Operations Command. The assignment involved a mission to the Arcturus System. Though Nathan wasn't SiC, he was perfectly fine with that as long as he served along side his buddy and he got to see the galaxy.

So begins...

Aboard the F.S.S. Legacy

The crew was gathered in the briefing room, which wasn't as cramped as many thought it would be. There was some comfortable leg room, as they all sat around the elongated oval metallic table at the center of the room. In the middle of the table was a projector propped up via a tripod extending from the table itself. The projector belonged to the table, and once a presentation was over, it would slide back into the table's center, as metallic folds enveloped and hid the device.

Adrian sat at the very of the oval table, in his captain's seat, he was giving the briefing. That was of course going to come up after Admiral Fontaine had finished his communique with the team.

The Admiral's wrinked face, bald head with hair that stood like little white needles, spoke to them, as they watched him on the screen. The feed was displaying his office, which was located aboard Senecis Station. Senecis Station, located somewhere in the Feranel system and Nathan's home system, was primarily a military outpost, unlike Iridosis Station. Senecis was a training ground, a command center, a defensive orbital cannon platform, and at present moment, an office for Joint Special Operations Command. It orbited the planet of Ekara Prime, a temperate world with conditions quite similar to Earth's. His office had large plexi glass view ports extending from the floor to the top of the ceiling. Beyond the plexi glass windows was the planet that the Station orbited. From what they could gather, his office was spacious, and like their briefing room, dark and unlit. Except for the natural lighting provided by the reflection of the system's sun off of a planet's atmosphere.

"Once you enter the system, stay clear of other Federation forces, and do not let anyone detect your presence, understand?"

"Yes sir, I have a question, will there be other frigate teams like ourselves, there?"

"No," the Admiral replied quickly, and tacitly, not alluding to anything.

"I understand Admiral, we will complete our mission to the best of our ability."

"Good, that's what I like to hear. Good luck and Godspeed Commander Ives." the Admiral closed the communique, at which point Adrian stepped up and re-activated the projector.

"Alright people," he spoke in a commanding, yet smooth voice, "Our objective is two-fold, gather intelligence and report to command on the insurgency's movements, and then proceed to search and destroy such units that are deemed a threat."

"Deemed a threat? I thought all the innies were a threat?" Nathan spoke up first. 'Innies' was a derogatory term for insurgents, a nickname established so that people wouldn't have to say the entire word, just like Krauts and Tojos for the Germans and Japanese in World War II, and VC for the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War.

"They are, but some are more of a threat than others." Adrian stated.

"What? You lost me, man." Nathan was perplexed.

"Strategically speaking, we're not out to hunt the rag tag groups, we're trying to hit them where it hurts, to put it your way." Adrian replied.

"Ah," Nathan nodded in confirmation.

"Alright, squad, that's all for today, get back to your stations, we have to make it to the system by the end of this week."

The meeting room was quiet as the admiral went into his little talk about what was going on out in the big blue world. Serina chuckled to herself before propping her feet up on the table and watch the mouth move and move. He was going to beat the band this time.... she thought to herself before pulling out her data pad and scrolling through it. The pad brought up detailed views of routes and maps of the planet they were heading to. She bit her lip silently look up the planets recent history, there was event after event of sectarian tension. It was like a hornets nest about to explode. She listen as the admiral went on with the usual speech, before finally concluding it. She watched as Adrian turned on the project and started to talk.

"Alright people," he spoke in a commanding, yet smooth voice, "Our objective is two-fold, gather intelligence and report to command on the insurgency's movements, and then proceed to search and destroy such units that are deemed a threat."

Serina nodded before taking a sip of her coffee on the table before looking back up when Nathan started up.

Serina looked up at the first bit "He's right captain after what they've done.....It would not be wise to blow the small ones off as if they were so every day rebels, they're the backbone of the whole thing." She sat back and allowed the captain to explain himself some more before he dismissed them. She the stood up brushing off and moved her way to her station, it was going to be a long trip.

Two weeks before the Salient's arrival in the Arcturus System
Aboard the F.S.S. Legacy

Nathan was in the stealth frigate's armory, he was inspecting, or rather scouting for a pistol to his liking. He gripped one in his hands, as he held it before him while he closed one of his eyes. He was pretending there was a target to be shot. He pulled the trigger, but nothing happened. It was standard protocol that weapons were not pre-loaded with a magazine.

Nathan continued sifting through the other hand guns in the armory, part of him was searching for something usable, the other part was searching for a...fashion statement...oddly enough. Nathan rose from his kneeled position, intent on finding a fitting weapon, but until then, he decided to report to the bridge.

Adrian, was in the Bridge, standing at the helm, overseeing the bridge crew, while they monitored the system. The Commander noticed Nathan's arrival, to whom he nodded. A large holographic image of the planet of New Sidney was brought forth to display. It was a three dimensional render of the planet that was off the Legacy's starboard side.

"We just arrived in the Arcturus System, it will not be long before we deploy." Adrian stated.

"I suppose we should get suited?" Nathan asked.

"No, we'll maintain orbital observations of the planet first," Adrian replied, statistical readings popped up beside the holographic display, "I want to watch this closely before we jump in. We have to minimize casualties, as a special operations force."

"Got it, chief." Nathan sat at his station in the bridge.

"Would you like up to the minute reports sent to your communicator, Commander?" the A.I. unit known as T.A.U. spoke up.

The A.I. was a holographic projection appearing beside Adrian, its orange flames flickered constantly.

"No that won't be necessary, T.A.U., I wouldn't want my communicator to be flooded by the minute..."

"With useless information like another baby being born," Nathan added.

Adrian glanced at the operative, "Let's maintain surveillance, and then we'll make our next move."
