GENERAL APPEARANCE
X> Despite already being over 20 years old already, Aruki is mistaken by most people to only be 17 or even younger. And it's quite easy to tell that he is the youngest of the princes. He's by no mean masculine, but that doesn't mean he's weak either. Aruki stood at a rather average height with a lean, slightly muscular build. He is quite athletic due to the fact that he practices sword fighting and wall climbing almost everyday. He is usually seen with a gentle and cheerful expression on his face and people often commented how peaceful it is to stand within his presence.

In terms of outfit, when Aruki is not on duty as a prince he is seen in casual clothes which normally consist of a dark top and light colored pants. Though, when he is inside the castle, tending to his royal duties, Aruki is seen wearing more appropriate clothing for a prince with the royal crest on his belongings. His sword and glove are always seen on him whether he is sneaking out or attending to his duties. His glove is always on his left hand and it covers his palm and middle finger.

Nonetheless, Aruki has an appearance that is quite similar to what normal people would perceive a prince to look like. Though, Aruki had secretly hoped that one day he could look as powerful and intimidating as his father and eldest brother.

LIKES | LOVES
X> Ever since Aruki is young, sneaking out of the castle and sightseeing around the city has always been his favorite hobby, despite it being frowned upon by his father. He loves nature and would prefer to indulge himself with the wild rather than a stuffy castle. And, as a prince of a country, there's nothing that would make him happier than to see his people could live in prosper and peace.
DISLIKES | HATES
X> Aruki acknowledged himself to be a man of freedom, so any types of restraints or strictness are the very things that he abhors. He also hates cocky and selfish people who think that they can look down on normal citizens just because their status is higher. Aruki also doesn't like it if someone is lying to him, as he would expect that people would be honest with their words all the time.
PERSONALITY
X> Aruki’s type of personality is easy-going and is a person who is easy to get along with. He cares for all of his servants, brothers and father who he sees as his friends and shows respect towards them. Though he sneaks out of the castle, delaying his work, he treats his title as a prince seriously and cares deeply for his country. Aruki always thinks about his position as a prince and what he can do for his country.

While Aruki is not one to become extremely angry or sad, though when it comes to problems that needed to be dealt with, he's incredibly serious. He's also an honest person and a trustworthy friend, who will always be there to aid those that are in need, whether it be his brothers or just a normal citizen of the kingdom. And unlike many nobles, he treats people equally, even if their social status isn't as high as him. Aruki is also a courageous and determined person, as he will never stop trying and improving himself until the goals he had set for himself is met.

Overall, Aruki is the type of respectable, friendly and reliable prince that would earn a lot of respect and admiration from his both his subordinates and people alike.

STRENGTHS
X> Aruki is a master in swordsmanship because he had taking it up at a very young age and had shown great potential for it, though he's nowhere near as excellent as his personal guard, Isolde. He's also an expert in philosophy and political matters whose advice was taken with great appreciation from his brothers and father. Aruki is also quite intelligent and he also had a range of survival skills.
WEAKNESSES
X> Aruki is completely oblivious of the terrors that his father has plunged over his kingdom and people and therefore he doesn't know in the least that his people are in fact suffering. He is also a bit too honest and has never been able to tell a proper lie without being obvious about it. Because of his good-hearted nature, Aruki can also be easily taken advantage of if he's not careful with those he came across.
BIOGRAPHY
X> Aruki was born as the fourth son of the King and the Queen of the Demon Civitate. Because the queen fell ill with an incurable disease when she's still bearing him, she immediately passed away after he had his first cry. Her death has left his brothers and father destroyed. Following her final words, they still love him and raise him in her place. Despite no one seemed to blame him, there isn't a single day that he wouldn't feel regret for the death of his beloved mother.

As Aruki grew up, he slowly becoming more and more capable as the Fourth Prince of the kingdom. He excelled in many subjects and become the pride of his father and brothers themselves. And of course, he would always show great cares for his people, knowing that it is his utmost responsibility. And it seemed that the people seemed to adore him for everything that he had contributed for them too. But he, just like his second and third brother, knows naught of all the suffering that his father is forcing the kingdom to went through.

Though Aruki didn't have a particular close friend, he gets on well with his subordinates, as well as his brothers. One example is his personal guard, Isolde, who is also the General of the Exercitus Dei. She was originally a slave from a warrior tribe to the North of the kingdom and was sold to an arena where she was forced to fight as a gladiator every day. It was Aruki who bought her freedom and grateful of his deed, she decided to swear her loyalty to the royal family and become his guard. Aruki also gave many valuable advice for his eldest brother and father on how to rule the kingdom, but whether they carried them out or not is totally beyond him.

Day by day, Aruki would spend his time strolling around the city to observe how people live and offer any helps should they are in need. Such actions are greatly frowned upon by his father and there are times that he was scolded for doing so, but it isn't enough to stop him, since he still takes good care of the jobs given to him. He also secretly hope that he would become Izakyu's adviser when he has inherited the throne, so that in a way, he can further contribute his devotion for the country.

Little did Aruki know that a fateful meeting will soon change his view of the kingdom and his life forever...

After having a satisfying lunch, Aruki made his way back to the study along with Isolde and Kou. Yukazu had disappeared first because it was time for his nap. Aruki honestly thought that back when they're still just kids, his brother much more carefree than he is now. They would even sleep together at night and play all sort of fun games together. Though he didn't know when did his brother develop his brother complex like that.

When Aruki raised the question of what they should do for the rest of the afternoon, Kou suddenly remarked of how fun it was to go horseback riding yesterday. He blinked at the question, before smiling gently, "So you really enjoy to go riding, huh? Well, we can certainly go for another round today. Though I'll have to take care of the rest of work that Yukazu-niisama left me first. Wanna come along, Isolde?"

The general shrugged, "Nah, I have to do some patrolling around the city this afternoon. Thieveries are at large recently. Just have fun with your new little princess."

"Is that jealousy I sense, eh?" Aruki sneered.

"Not in a million year." Isolde replied.

When they've made it back to the study, Aruki got on with his paperwork while Kou helping him to sort them into different categories, as well as arranging things in a more tidied manner. When the servant come into the room and brought the last documents away, Aruki sighed in relief. He then turned to Kou with another smile, "Now then, shall we go horseback riding again?"

Yeah, I felt that Kou certainly would xD Like it has been so long since the last time he was loved or something like that xD
And I know that manga, though it isn't really my type :D

"So you really enjoy to go riding, huh?" Kouta nodded affirmatively and offered a small half-smile, not saying anything more on the subject. He nodded as Aruki spoke of how they still had some work to finish, and silently wondered how there managed to be so much paperwork when the kingdom really wasn't all that large. I suppose it could be because of how powerful and greedy the army is... Shoving the thoughts to the back of his head, Kou sped up a bit so he could match the Prince's pace, and watching with a slight frown as Isolde left. What the hell is she calling me 'princess' for?! I'm not a girl! XX
When they got to the study, Kouta finished putting away the last of the books, and went about separating the stacks of papers so they wouldn't grow too tall and fall over. He couldn't exactly organize them in any way due to his inability to read, but he supposed keeping them from falling everywhere was better than standing around and doing nothing. It wasn't very long before Aruki had completed all the work left for him, and Kou felt almost giddy as they headed toward the stables. It had been so long since he'd been able to ride a horse, and it had taken every ounce of strength to keep himself from crying the day before. He adored horses, and would happily live in the stables alongside them if it didn't mean being constantly surrounded by giant horseflies. XX
The moment they reached the stables, Kouta was already inside, slowly approaching the first horse he saw and gently stroking their mane. The one he'd ridden the day before was a beautiful black stallion, with a long silky mane that seemed well-groomed. "You're a very beautiful horse, aren't you darling?" He cooed, for a few moments completely oblivious to the fact that he wasn't there on his own. He felt a blush creep onto his face as he caught Aruki staring at him, bewildered, and he turned his gaze back to the horse. He tried not to think of how silly he must have looked, cooing at a stallion. XX
"Yesterday, you appeared to be really surprised when you learned I already knew how to ride a horse, and I may as well tell you why. I lived on a farm as child. I owned a horse, just like this one, and went riding every day from morning 'till night." Kou smiled fondly at the memory. "Yesterday was the first time I'd ridden a horse in nearly seven years. Even if you don't believe me, as I've been so rude to you, I am truly grateful that you took me riding." XX
Kou knew his face was still red, but he turned to look at Aruki anyway, and flashed him a genuine smile. After only one day, he was starting to trust the young prince, even if it there was a long way to go before he was willing to open up about himself much more than he already had. So far, Kou didn't really mind being the personal servant of a prince. Maybe I might even fall in love with him someday, like in that fairytale Aiko was telling me about... XX
As they rode their respective horses, Kouta grinned the entire time, and took the lead in deciding which directions they went. He managed to win several races against Aruki, and felt better than he had in a long time, simply because he was on a horse and not stuck in a tiny stone-walled room. As he came to a stop at the top of a tall hill, Kou spread his arms out and savored the feeling of the wind, still smiling. "You know, I think I wouldn't mind it if I stayed in your service for the rest of my life. You took me in without question, and I doubt I'd still be alive right now if you hadn't. I really am grateful to you." XXX

Oh God, have you ever seen horseflies?! Those things are like the devil incarnate! And the horse Kouta likes is a reference to the novel Black Beauty~

After having finished with all the daunting work, finally Aruki got a chance to stretch his muscle a little. Though he's already got enough of a ride yesterday, it was still quite fun to go for a horseback ride again. Well, mainly because Kou really seemed to enjoy it. Somehow he felt quite happy upon seeing his servant being able to smile so happily again. He knows that slaves will usually have hard time before they can integrate with society again once they're free. And it's naturally for Aruki to have them. Or in this case, Kou.

When they've made it to the royal stable, Kou just went in first and walked to the horse that he ridden on yesterday and apparently he was showing great care for it. Aruki couldn't help standing with his back leaned against the entrance and watch with amusement. And he chuckling a little when he saw his servant blushing as he realized his presence. He's kind of adorable, if I must say.

Aruki listened to what Kou said, about how he was able to ride a horse and how much he enjoyed it. And he even went as far as expressing his gratitude for Aruki because he had taken him for a ride after seven years. He tilted his head and smiled gently, "Yeah, I'm glad you were having fun yourself. Anytime you wanna go for a ride, just speak to me. I'll give you a horse for your own if you like."

And so, both of them went for a ride through the whole forest and hills of the capital city. Aruki purposefully let Kou took the lead and just quietly follow the boy from behind. He's never seen someone can be so happy just because they are free. It might sound vain, but it was his dream that one day he could see every citizen of the country smiling without a care like that. After all, that was the whole reason for him to work hard. He might be slacking off from times to times, but he still try harder than any of his brother.

As their horses stopped on top of a hill that oversees the whole capital below, the sunset draws the whole horizon with a shade of orange. Kou, when trying to enjoy the freedom that he had found after so long, expressed his gratitude again. Upon hearing that, Aruki just giggling, "I know it already. You don't have to flatter me again and again like that. Well, I'll certainly be happy if you're willing to be my servant for life. As long as you're happy with whatever decision you made."

Aruki stretched his arm, "Now then, let's go back. Yukazu-niisama wouldn't be very happy if he didn't see me around when he needed me. You must be hungry too." With that said, they rode their horses back to the castle.

Yeah, I once saw them a lot too. They really are devils LOL

"I know it already. You don't have to flatter me again and again like that. Well, I'll certainly be happy if you're willing to be my servant for life. As long as you're happy with whatever decision you made. Now then, let's go back. Yukazu-niisama wouldn't be very happy if he didn't see me around when he needed me. You must be hungry too." Nodding, Kouta gently stroked his horse's mane and followed Aruki back toward the castle, still smiling. The ride had been peaceful, and more gratifying than he could remember ever feeling as a child. Although, back then he was able to go riding every day, whereas now it was a special privilege. I wonder if he really meant what he said about getting me my own horse one day...knowing him, it probably wasn't a lie. XX
When they returned to the stables, Kou led the black stallion back into its pen, carefully removing the sadle and bridle and fighting the urge to stay and groom the horse himself. Perhaps I can just come back later tonight. Patting the horse on its side, Kou smiled to it and hurried to catch up with Aruki, falling into step beside the Prince as they walked. The entire sky was a fiery orange color, with hints of purple and red seeping through, and Kouta almost couldn't remember the last time he'd taken the time to appreciate a sunset. Life with Prince Aruki just keeps getting better and better, doesn't it? XX
Unsurprisingly, Yukazu and Isolde were both waiting for them when they entered the castle. Kouta stealthily moved out of the way as the older Prince all but lunged at his younger brother, complaining about not being given enough attention. Isolde and Kou watched the exchange with nothing short of amusement, and made no move to aid the younger Prince, whow as being all but crushed in a 'brotherly embrace'. When the brothers were finally finished with their abnormal show of affection, the group of four headed to the dining hall, chatting idly about the war and castle duties as they walked. XX
Kouta was happily adding to the conversation as they arrived at their usual table, where Mia and Aiko were already waiting. Mia watched Kou and Aoi's interactions with a hint of bewilderment. When Kouta took his seat and started to chat with Aiko about fairytale stories, Mia turned toward Aruki with a smirk. "I must say, Ruki-sama, I'm quite impressed. Kouta has always had a hard time trusting others, yet he seems to have warmed up to you already. Its nice to see him smiling again, I honestly thought he never would." Taking a sip of his drink, Mia let out a sigh and continued talking. "I don't know if he's fully aware of it himself, but I think the death of our friend might have a lot to do with why he's so distrusting of others." XX
Mia explained to Aruki how he and Kouta had once been slaves under the same master, and how they had a good friend, Maya, who worked alongside them. He told Aruki of how close Kou and Maya had been, and how he himself had been separated from the two during an auction, shortly before he was taken in by the young Prince. "I didn't know about Maya's death until the other day, when Isolde brought Kouta to me for identification. He seemed to have taken it pretty hard, especially since there was no one there to comfort him. Perhaps you should try to get him to talk about it, I doubt he's cried yet, so all those emotions are probably being bottled up inside him. If its you, he might open up. I doubt he'll talk to me." XX
While everyone went about with their own conversations, Kouta listened intently to Aiko as she told him more stories about Princes and dragons and Knights and damsels in distress. They all had a happy ending, and although Kou doubted whether or not such stories could exist in real life, he enjoyed hearing them nonetheless. "Are there any fairytales about a Prince who falls in love with someone he shouldn't? There are stories about servant girls falling in love with a Prince, but what about the other way around?" Aiko puffed her cheeks out in thought, her eyes squinting in the way they did when she was concentrating on something. Suddenly, she grinned, turning to Kou with a sparkle in her eyes. "There isn't, so we should make a new one!" XX
He and Aiko spent the rest of the meal coming up with their own fairytale. The story was about a mighty Prince who fell in love with the stableboy - which had been Aiko's idea - and began doing just about anything he could think of to try and catch the busy stableboy's attention without approaching him directly. The Prince left notes that got blown away in the wind, left gifts that got taken by someone else, and even baked a cake that got eaten by one of the palace horses. In the end, the stableboy left the dejected Prince his own note and gift, thanking him for all the effort. Then the two became friends and fell in love and eventually got married. Kouta couldn't help but laugh lightly to himself as Aiko rushed to write down their fairytale story on paper. XXX

Ayyy random question, but do read many novels? And if so, which ones do you like? I read a lot of older novels like Black Beauty, Gulliver's Travels, Frankenstein, Little Women, stuff like that. A Wrinkle In Time and A Certain Slant of Light are really good as well. Plus Edgar Allen Poe, though he's a poet, not a novelist, and pretty much all his stuff is depressing as fudge. My favorite story of his is The Masque of the Red Death. Ah, I'm ranting aren't I?

After their ride through the whole afternoon, Aruki and Kou finally decided to come back as it was getting darker by the minute, and it isn't really safe to stay outside far away from the city while it's already dark. Well, even if Aruki was somehow trapped in a forest or something, he's still quite confident that he can do just about anything for him to survive. He doesn't know why, but he did secretly find the idea of being lost elsewhere with Kou sounds a little... interesting. But he quickly shook the thought off.

When they've made it to the castle, they brought their horses back to the stables. Watching as Kou kept caring for the horse he ridden was somewhat peaceful. His excitement earlier did remind Aruki back when he was learning how to ride for the first time when he was nine or something. It was lucky that the horse seemed to like him, and though he had some struggles at first, he managed to ride well after just about a month of practicing. He'd never thought that he could found someone who is different, yet still somewhat similar to him like Kou. It was cool, I guess.

And, as soon as they made their way to the castle's main door, the first ones they saw were Isolde and Yukazu. As expected, his older brother jump at him once again. Well, it was lucky for him that beside hugging and cuddling, Yukazu had never did something like sexually harassing him. Perhaps he hasn't reached that level of brother complex yet. But he definitely wouldn't want it to happen though. It's true that he held a liking for men, but incest is an absolute no-no to him. Yukazu, on the other hand, was eager enough though.

The sight of the princes being with their loyal subjects is common around here, so no one really paid attention to question why the royal family could find so much fun in hanging around with commoners like them. As they made their way to the dining hall in peace, they chatted away. Aiko and Miachelis was waiting for them in their usual table, chatting while eating their food. Tonight they are having simple curry and bread.

While everyone seemed to occupied themselves with their own conversation, Aruki listened attentively to Miachelis as he stated how surprise he was seeing Kouta opening up for him, "I see. Kou-san really have had a hard time, huh? But it's no big deal, really. I was just simply doing what a prince must do for his subordinates, don't you think?" He said to the head butler with a grin.

As Miachelis continued to explain how Kou and his best friend used to work under the same master but were separated, and how her death affected him. "Everyone has their own hard time in life. The past few years must have been hellish with Kou-san. But he's free now, isn't he? I will do my best to ensure that he's happy." Aruki said with just another grin. They chatted for few moments later until Miachelis excused himself to go take care of his business.

Isolde had also followed Yukazu to venture somewhere in the city as he had asked Aruki to borrow her. It seemed that Akiha had some business that needed Yukazu to take care of in the city, so they've already left. And that left Aruki, Kou and Aiko in the dining hall. "Hey, what are you two doing?" Aruki approached them and asked, "Anyway, it's time for your lesson, Kou-san. Are you ready?"

I didn't read too many novels though, but I'm a Victor Hugo's fan :D I've read most of his works. Speaking of which, I've been watching Bungou Stray Dogs and they named the characters after famous novelists and their abilities after their works, which was a cool thing LOL

Kouta waved to Mia as he headed back to his office, and bid a quiet goodbye to Isolde and Yukazu as they left to explore the city. Aiko let out a sigh as she finished writing down the story they had constructed. "Hey, what are you two doing?" Aiko smiled brightly to the Prince, gesturing wildly toward the page she'd written on. "Ah, we made our own fairytale! Its about a Prince who falls in love with the stableboy!" Aiko beamed proudly, and Kou smiled shyly, not really knowing what else to do or say. "Anyway, it's time for your lesson, Kou-san. Are you ready?" "Ah, that's right! You're going to learn how to read, aren't you?" Nodding to his friend, Kouta stood slowly. Aiko handed him the paper with their fairytale on it, grinning up at him. XX
"Yes, I'm ready, Oujisama." Kouta waved to Aiko as she left in the opposite direction as them, and walked dutifully next to Aruki as they headed back toward the study, chatting about stories and horses as they went. Kou knew a lot about horses, and Aruki knew a lot about fairytales, so it was a very pleasant conversation. When they made it to the study, Kouta noticed that several books were scattered about the room, and sighed. "How does this room become so messy when we aren't even in it?" Picking up the books, he placed them back on their shelves and turned back towards the Prince. XXX
As it turned out, learning to read was much more difficult that Kou had originally anticipated. There were so many different words and so many different ways to use them, not to mention grammar and punctuation. There were many words that had more than one meaning, or more than one pronunciation. Overall, it was going to be a while before Kouta could read much more than a few pages without help. How humiliating, that I can't read a damn book without help from someone else... Kou became frustrated more than once, but did his best to hold it in and keep going. Aruki was a pretty good teacher, too, though that didn't really help when it came to Kou's life-long inability to read even a shop sign. I wonder why I was never taught to read as a child. XX
The next few hours passed in this fashion, and by the time they decided to end the lesson, Kou had made a decent amount of progress. He was still frustrated, however, and frowned at the list of letters he'd written in shaky handwriting, sprawled across the page in uncoordinated rows. "I thought learning to read and write would be simple, but its more complicated than anything else I can think of. And why is my writing so bad? Yours is neat and pretty and mine looks like I'm writing out my dying wish or something..." Frowning deeper at the paper in his hands, Kouta folded it up and shoved it into his pocket before picking up the books they'd used and placing them back on their respective shelves. He was actually quite proud of how he'd organized the books - sorted by color, then by the shade of said color - though he would never say so aloud. I'm just used to having to clean things up. XX
Outside, the stars were clearly visible in the darkened sky, and Kouta stood for a moment at the window, admiring them. As a slave, he'd usually been stuck inside a building or without access to a window. Finding himself no longer worried about asking unnecessary questions, Kou turned to Aruki with a curious look on his face. "Oujisama, do you know any of the constellations? Hana-san once told me that every star is part of a picture of some kind...would it be troubling for you to point some out for me?" He was sheepish in making such a specific request, and stared at the floor as he spoke. XXX

Really?! I didn't notice that! I literally just f/inished watching episode seven, so talk about divine timing. And I'm a bit of a literature nerd, so I read a lot. I haven't read any of Victor Hugo's works, though I have heard of him, so sometime I'll have to go look for a novel of his. I tend to read a lot of science fiction novels, or really cliche romance (ahahaha). I love graphic novels like Malice and Havoc, and since 2013, I've been reading lots of manga as well.

And also, I based the language off of English, since the world we're writing about is more like Medieval Europe than Japan, despite everybody's names.

Aruki chuckled upon hearing that they are inventing their own fairytale. Well, their imagination sure can be quite colorful. "Well, let's go then. It wouldn't be easy though so try your best, okay?" Aruki grinned as they waved goodbye to Aiko as they made their way back to Aruki's study. Their conversation on their way was quite pleasant though, as they seemed to have a lot to say with each other.

When they've made it to the study, Aruki wanted to show off a little, so he put on a pair of glasses on and tried to act as if he's a scholar. Of course, they have to start from scratch. Luckily there's also some book teaching simple words and letters that they use to teach children on the bookshelves, so Aruki had gathered as much as those book possible to teach Kou from the most basic of things first.

It sure was a lot easier to teach someone who is a full adult to read and write than to teach the children. Aruki knows about this all-to-well because he once taught the children in the orphanage he opened. Kou was eager to learn indeed, but he still have a long way to go before he could write and read fluently though. Well, Aruki was enthusiastic about this and Kou too is a fast learner, so just within their lesson together, Kou had been able to make quite some progress with his learning, which was a good thing.

After a few hours learning and teaching, and Aruki had gone all the way as of to hold Kou hand and helped him to write more meticulously. "Okay, we'll stop here for today. Do try to practice more when you have free time, okay?" Aruki grinned.

As Kou complained of how hard reading and writing can be, and that his handwriting is messy, Aruki just shook his head, "Well, it took a child quite a few years before he can read and write properly, after all. You've already made quite a progress so if you try your best, you could have a good handwriting as well. I guess you could say that because I have to write every day until my hand is trembling so I got to practice a lot."

When his servant asked him if he knows any constellations, Aruki smiled as he opened the window, "Can you see the three brightest stars over there, there and there? They are known as the brightest stars of their specific constellations." He pointed at Altair, Deneb and Vega, "If you connected them together, they will make a triangle. Astronomers named them the Summer Triangle, it was cool, huh? But if you want to see them clearly, you should head to the observatory on the top floor of the castle."

I like H.G.Wells to, when it comes to sci-fi novels. And yeah, though I think I named the chars after both Japanese and German names LOL

Kouta listened intently as Aruki pointed out the a couple different constellations, and he stood in silent awe at all the things he didn't know about the world. There was so much to learn, and he didn't even know the basics yet. Altair...Deneb...Vega...I need to be sure to remember those. "If you connected them together, they will make a triangle. Astronomers named them the Summer Triangle, it was cool, huh?" Kou nodded in agreement. "But if you want to see them clearly, you should head to the observatory on the top floor of the castle." "Observatory? What do you do in an observatory?" Kou facepalmed only seconds after the words came out. "Ah, judging from the name, you probably observe things...I'm definitely not the brightest person..." XX
Kou then went on to speak about how as a child, his aunt had told him about the phases of the moon, and that somehow, that had been one of the only things he'd remembered throughout being a slave. He couldn't remember if his aunt or uncle had ever even attempted to teach him how to read, and after so long, he couldn't even remember what they looked like. "When you spend so long away from something, you forget the way that something looks, how it feels or how it sounds or smells. I can't remember the sound of my aunt's voice, or my uncle's laugh, and I never met my parents so of course I don't remember them at all. The only faces in my head are those of people in the slave trade - most of them without names - and then of those I've met here." XX
The two spoke for a little while longer, and since it was already quite late, Kouta started to get tired halfway through the conversation, though he tried his best not to show it. He was interested in the stars and the workings of the castle, and oddly enough, he didn't want to stop hearing Aruki's voice. It was calming, almost like a lullaby. It seems odd that I'd be comparing someone's voice to a lullaby, and more odd still that someone's voice is doing the same thing a lullaby does... Before Kouta could fall asleep during a conversation, Isolde arrived to scold Aruki for 'not getting his proper rest'. As it turned out, it had gotten much later than they'd originally thought. So Kou bid goodnight to the Prince and Isolde, heading drowsily back to his bedroom. XX
Morning came quickly, and Kouta slept dreamlessly, waking up with a slight headache. It took him a moment to realize that the source of said headache was the fact that he'd rolled off his bed sometime during the night, and was now lying in a crumpled heap of blankets on the cold wood floor. Well, that's the first time I've ever fallen off a bed. Then again, I haven't actually slept in a real bed in years, so it shouldn't be surprising that I'd fall off. Same as the previous morning, Aiko brought him breakfast and ate with him, chatting throughout the meal. And, same as the day before, the conversation was dominated by talk about stories Aiko had heard, several of which were about the Demon Civitate, the Exercitus Dei, and even General Esphire herself. XX
"Some people in the castle and city seem to be really scared of Isolde-san, and I don't understand why. She's so nice all the time, even if she doesn't smile or anything like that. Kind of like you, Kou-san! You don't smile much either, but you're super nice!" Kouta felt his face heat up a bit at Aiko's praise, and she thanked her for the compliment, hastily eating the rest of his food as an excuse not to say anything. It wasn't long until the meal was finished, and the two headed into the castle together. Kou waved to Aiko as they split ways. Aiko is a sweet girl, though it might take some time to get used to her optimism. He thought, joining Isolde in her idle spot outside Prince Aruki's bedroom door. As usual, neither of them said a word. XX

While they waited for Aruki, the Prince's servants stood in uncomfortable silence, as Kou had no idea what to say to the woman, and he figured Isolde probably couldn't care less about making conversation. Luckily, it wasn't long before Prince Aruki came waltzing out of his room. The three exchanged the usual 'good morning' and headed off toward the study, making small talk as they moved through the vast castle halls. Kouta, however, wasn't particularly interested in the conversation, instead consumed with thoughts of the stars and moon phases and unvoiced questions about the observatory he'd heard about the previous night. It wasn't long before they made it to the study, and as usual, Isolde left Kou and Aruki to their respective duties. XXX
Aiko had gone on a shopping trip with Mia, so Kouta was left on his own to shelves books, the quiet peace of the study only broken when a pen snapped or one of the Princes made a comment on something. More often than not, those comments were jokes, and more often than not, the two brothers would stop for a moment to laugh at whatever had been said. Kou could only sigh every time it happened. He didn't really find anything to be all that funny, and instead kept his attention on the many shelves of neatly organized books. I still don't understand how they manage to get so disorganized every day when the only person in here before myself is Prince Yukazu. If he's the only one in here making a mess, I dread what his bedroom must look like... XXX
Kouta shoved such thoughts aside and turned back to the book he had been attempting to read. Most of the words were still foreign to him, but he recognized words here and there and was able to make a few guesses at what the book was about. He didn't have time to make a decision on it before he returned the book to its shelf and set about putting away the others littering the floor. A half hour into the morning, and the floor was covered in tall stacks of books, each one color coded and slowly being shelved in terms of shade. Kouta hummed quietly as he worked, a barely-audible song that he had known all his life but couldn't pair with a memory. By lunchtime, all the books had been returned to their shelves, except the one Kou was reading. XX
As Aruki and Yukazu finished up the last of their paperwork for the day, Kouta stood and carefully placed the navy blue leather-bound book back on its shelf and followed the two Princes out of the study, lacing his fingers together in front of him. He didn't join their conversation, as he wanted to avoid Yukazu's physical touching if possible, and simply listened to what the two spoke about. Kou couldn't help but watch Aruki from afar, observing the details of his face and the proud way he walked. As if he regreted nothing, worried about nothing. In a way, Kouta envied how carefree Prince Aruki was, never having to worry about where his next meal would come from or whether he'd even live another day. Well, he's a Prince. What did I expect? XXXXX
Isolde was waiting at their usual table when they arrived, and so were Aiko and Mia, who had apparently returned from their shopping trip early. Taking a seat next to his smaller friend, Kouta greeted Aiko with a smile. Aiko returned his greeting with a much wider smile, but quickly returned to the book she was reading, and said nothing more. Instead, Mia motioned him over, and Kou moved to sit next to his older friend. "Kou, while we were out, some of the slave traders were talking about a bounty that was put on your head. It isn't worth much, but apparently the person Aruki saved you from is willing to do just about anything for revenge. I'm assuming you must have embarrassed him quite badly to have made him so angry." XX
Kouta let out a long sigh and leaned his head on his hand. "Technically, I wasn't the one who embarrassed him, although I did injure some of his men pretty badly. Aruki showed up just as they were about to cut off my head, and I'm sure that's what he's really upset about. No one likes it when royalty interferes with the Black Market trade." He said boredly, not really caring much for the topic. After all, he didn't have any reason to leave the castle now that he was here, so there wasn't a reason to go out into dangerous territory. As long as he stayed within the palace walls, no one else could get to him, especially if he was a personal servant to one of the Princes. However, Mia still looked concerned, though nothing more was said between the two. XXXX
Once everyone had finished eating, the group split up, with everyone heading off to take care of their own duties. Kouta gave his best attempt at making decent conversation as he and Aruki headed back toward the study, though he still let the Prince do a majority of the talking. Kouta had realized earlier on that he actually enjoyed listening to Prince Aruki speak, and still had no idea what to do with the feeling. He'd never really felt enjoyment in that way before, where his stomach would twist and turn but not hurt. He had vague memories of Mia talking about having 'butterflies in your stomach' when with someone you love, but Kou had never had butterflies in his stomach, so how could he know what that felt like? He tried not to think about it too much. XXX

Well, Doukyuusei was amazing. Finals were not. I have a week left of school and have spent most of the last week reading the book for my literature assignment and stressing out over my grade in Biology...yeah, I've definitely had better weeks. Also for some reason I can't stop thinking up new ideas?

After having finished with all the dreaded paperworks, Aruki made his way to the dining hall together with his brother and the two loyal subjects. Well, this has pretty much be a repeated routine everyday that just gone on again and again, but it's his duty as a Prince, so he shouldn't complain much about it. Now he only wishes for something to turn up so that he can have some excuse to get out of the castle. It's going to suffocate me to dead if I were to stuck indoor until tou-sama and Izakyu-niisama return...

When they arrived at the dining hall, Isolde and Mia were waiting for them as their usual table as always. Together, they ate away their lunches and talked about all sort of things going on around the castle and the kingdom itself. It seemed that the arrival of the King had intimidated the opposing force, but it's still going to take a while before the two sides can come to a truce though. Nobody wants war to happen, after all, especially between two equally strong kingdoms.

After having finished with the meal, Mia turned to Aruki before he left to take care of his own business, "Ah, I almost forgot, Ruki-sama. Akiha-sama had requested your presence and he asked that you make your way to his study after lunch. I suggest you go now."

"Is that so? Well, I will be going now. Thanks for telling me." Aruki nodded.

Leaving the dining hall, he made his way to the study of his brother along with Isolde and Kou. Telling both of them to wait outside, he walked in and greeted Akiha, who was sitting in his own desk taking care of the work left by the King and Izakyu that he had to finished. However, he doesn't seem to show any sign of fatigue, which was remarkable.

"You requested my presence, nii-sama?" Aruki asked.

"Yes, normally I would have just do it on my own, but with all of the work I'm having, I need to rely on you." Akiha spoke up, "Earlier this morning, a messenger from the western province of Hythe reported to me about an outbreak of an unknown disease. Many of the inhabitants had fallen victims to this disease and its cause is still not clear. I want you to travel there with Isolde and a medical team that I have personally chosen, find out about what had caused such a disease and leave the job of finding the cure for the team. Is it okay?"

Aruki nodded, "If this is for the welfare of the people, I will do it. Please count on me."

Leaving the room, Aruki exhaled a sigh. He retold that task that Akiha just given him to Isolde and Kou. "It seemed that there's finally some serious work to do, huh?" Isolde commented.

"Figure." Aruki shrugged, before turning to Kou, "Kou-san, it's up to you whether you wanted to come or not. The province of Hythe is quite far and it's not going to be a short ride. I couldn't guarantee that it'll be safe either. So, your choice?"

Well, maybe you're just more imaginative than normal people? xD

Kouta quickly became distracted by his confused thoughts about Aruki, and didn't notice they had arrived at the study until Isolde nudged him roughly with her arm. Shooting her a grumpy look, Kou watched the prince disappear inside the study, heeding his order to stay put and leaning casually against the wall outside the door. It wasn't long before he was once again absorbed into his private thoughts. What does it mean, 'butterflies in your stomach'? How do you know if that's what you're feeling? My stomach feels weird and uncomfortable, but it doesn't hurt, and it isn't a bad feeling. Does that mean I have butterflies in my stomach? And if it does, does that mean I'm in love with Aruki? I'm not quite sure I really want to know the answer to that question. XX
As usual, it wasn't too long before Aruki returned, letting out a sigh. Kouta regained his posture and crossed his hands behind his back, listening as the prince relayed the information from Akiha. Apparently Hythe - a city on the outskirts of the Civitate - had sent word of the outbreak of an unknown disease that was killing much of the population there. Kou filed each sentence into the back of his mind, making sure every bit of information was ingrained into his memory so he wouldn't forget anything that might be important. "It seemed that there's finally some serious work to do, huh?" XXXX
"Figure. Kou-san, it's up to you whether you wanted to come or not. The province of Hythe is quite far and it's not going to be a short ride. I couldn't guarantee that it'll be safe either. So, your choice?" Kouta tried not to show hesitation in his expression. They would send their youngest prince to fix something so dangerous? If he contracts the disease before they've found a cure, the King will likely go mad. And if I go, there's a pretty high chance I won't be coming back either. He let out the lightest of sighs. However, there is not much for me to do here at the castle if Aruki and Isolde are away. XXX
"Oujisama." Kou said, expression calm. "If there is any way I can be of help to you during a mission as important as this, then I would gladly accompany you. After all, I'm your personal servant, and I believe that means I'm entitled to follow you wherever you may go." He could feel Isolde's scrutinizing gaze lingering on the back of his head as he spoke, and he didn't blame her. Every word that came out of his mouth was only half-true, as while he did prefer the idea of going on a trip with Aruki, his reason for this preference had nothing to do with being the young prince's personal servant. XX
The rest of the evening was spent preparing for the trip, as it was decided that the convoy would leave early the next morning. Kouta made it a point to help out with anything and everything he could, even if it only served as a way to distract himself from the thoughts plaguing his mind. He was a bit disappointed to find that there was no time for a lesson in reading, but he was tired enough to not mind so much once the evening meal was finished and he'd climbed into bed, staring up at the stars outside his window. The constellations Aruki had showed him echoed through his head as he fell asleep. XX
The next morning, Kouta awoke to find a tray of food waiting for him by his bed, along with book and a note signed by Aiko and Mia. There was nothing on the note other than their two names, and Kou suspected that it was because they both knew he couldn't read much yet. He assumed the book was a present, perhaps so that he would be able to continue learning even as they traveled. I feel flattered that they took the time to leave me a gift, especially since they knew they'd both be too busy this morning to see me off. It might be a bit easier to go on this trip if I knew they were there to wish me luck. XXX
Once he'd finished his meal, Kouta dressed himself and tucked the book under his arm, making his way toward Aruki's chambers to wait with Isolde. The sun had just barely risen into view and soon it would be time to leave . I suppose I can only wonder what is going to happen once we get to Hythe. XX

Maybe, though I think it'd be more accurate to say that my brain is just running on full throttle 24/7. It. Never. Stops. Its quite frustrating actually, since I can hardly concentrate on the rest of my life while my mind is pumping out new storylines every ten minutes, though its damn convenient for roleplaying!

Aruki nodded to Kou after hearing his reply that he would come along, "Then please get prepared for now. We'll leave by early tomorrow's morning and certainly you don't want us to be all tired before our journey can start, hmm?" He tilted his head and chuckling, "I'll see you later then." Aruki bid goodbye to his servant before making his way back to his room along with Isolde.

"Are you sure that it was wise to let your little princess come along, then?" Isolde questioned, "Not in a million year would I have to worry about you, but he was a total different story. He might be a tough thing on the inside, but I don't think I can say the same for that frail body he had."

"Both of my brothers couldn't come anyway, and I need all the help I can get to solve this problem, aren't I?" Aruki grinned and answered, "You know you really are worrisome sometimes. But relax, I'll protect him, 'kay?"

Isolde shrugged as they both made their way into their own rooms to collect anything they needed for tomorrow's journey. Well, they didn't know whether it was going to be long or not so they just grab all the things that are necessary. Even without the comfort of the castle, they can still manage to do just fine. Most people would be surprise in Aruki's case though, but it's not like he mind much. He knows he shouldn't feel too excited, but a chance to get away from the stuffy study is as good as any.

The evening quickly passed as those who are tasked to travel along with Aruki to Hythe prepared anything they needed for the journey. Aruki had met up with the pharmacists and doctors that will accompany him and grant them access to the medical herbs stock of the castle should they need anything. They all said that it would be much easier if the best pharmacist - Prince Akiha, could come along, but taking into account of how the situation of the kingdom is, it couldn't be helped, after all.

At the first crack of dawn, everything has been prepared. Akiha and Yukazu also accompanied Aruki and his crew as they lead their convoy to the gate of the castle. Yukazu, however, walked from behind with Kou and told him to keep an eye on Aruki, knowing how mischievous he can be, "...But you don't really have to worry much. I'm pretty sure Ruki-chan will protect you like a little princess. Have a safe trip, okay?" He winked. After leaving the palace, Aruki climbed on his horse as he led the convoy into the capital, with Kou and Isolde alongside him, on their own horses.

"So, we can stop by the market on our way to buy some supplies first before heading to the mountain pass which will lead us to Hythe. Do you wanna buy anything?" Aruki turned to Kou and asked.

It wasn't long before Aruki emerged from his room, and the three proceeded toward the castle gates, soon joined by a full convoy of other people, one of whom was Prince Yukazu. Kouta couldn't help feeling nervous - after all, he'd never liked crowds - but he did his best not to show it. He wasn't surprised when Yukazu slowed to walk beside him. The elder Prince seemed to enjoy teasing him, playfully telling Kou to watch over Aruki. Why me? Aren't all these other, more capable people here to serve that exact purpose? Kou thought. "...But you don't really have to worry much. I'm pretty sure Ruki-chan will protect you like a little princess. Have a safe trip, okay?" "P-Princess?" Kouta cursed himself for stuttering, and for blushing. XX
Kou was distracted from the thought of being Prince Aruki's 'Princess' as the convoy reached the main gate, and he was delighted to find that he was being given his own horse - the same horse he'd fallen in love with during his rides with Aruki. The horse was named Beauty, and rightly so, though Kouta had already taken to calling her Darling instead. He supposed it could be considered an affectionate nickname of sorts. "Good morning darling. We're going to be traveling a long way, so I hope I'm not too much for you." He already knew he wouldn't be. Beauty was a strong horse, and Kou was still far underweight, even though he'd been eating much more every day since coming to the palace. Well, I suppose I can't gain much weight overnight. XX
Once he'd loaded all his things into the saddle bags - which wasn't much: the book Mia had given him, a decent amount of food, and more than a few apples for his horse - Kouta pulled himself into the saddle and gently stroked Beauty's mane, a satisfied grin on his face. As the convoy began moving, Kou moved into place beside Aruki, Isolde riding along the Prince's other side, and took a deep breath. Hythe. That was their destination, and was a far away one, making at least a two day's trip if nothing got in their way. I just hope we can do some good once we get there, otherwise its a futile journey. XX
"So, we can stop by the market on our way to buy some supplies first before heading to the mountain pass which will lead us to Hythe. Do you wanna buy anything?" Aruki asked, catching Kouta's attention. He was at first taken aback by the question, not fully understanding, but assumed it was only yet another part of Aruki's seemingly endless devotion to his servants. "Ah, no, I don't believe so. To be quite honest, I cannot think of a single thing I would need or wish to purchase...so unless there's something you think I need, then no." Kou smiled slightly, for once not forcing it, and quickly turned back to his horse, focusing on her twitching ears. I never would have thought that someone else would ask a question like that. And a Prince, no less! How nice. XX

Ahaha, more Black Beauty references! I'm going to start referencing that book whenever there's a scene with horses involved, just a warning. Also, do you think Isolde would somehow (inadvertently or not) help Kou realize that his feelings for Aruki are affectionate? I can't think of how else he'd notice...

Aruki nodded to his servant, "I see. Well, let's get going then." He signaled for the rest of the convoy behind him, each person were granted with a horse of their own choice, to sped up as they headed down into town, to the market. The convoy consists of five best pharmacists picked by Akiha himself, ten soldiers from the Exercitus Dei picked by Isolde, and leading them was Aruki, along with his two close servants. It wasn't the first time Aruki had to set off on something like this, so he just knows exactly what to do.

As they stocked up and bought anything that are necessary for their trip, Aruki instead took Kou through some clothing and accessory stalls, where he made his servant his newly model to try out new style and stuffs. Even though he knew that Kou probably wouldn't like it too much, but in the end, he still bought quite some new clothes, a couple of bracelets and necklaces for his servant. Some of them were quite expensive though. Isolde couldn't help sighing as she watched the two of them from behind, but she'd also bought for herself some shiny new weapons.

When they've got all that they needed, Aruki and Isolde led the convoy through the exit of the capital, thus making their way into the forest surrounding. It takes a morning and an afternoon to got through it. On their ways, they stopped here and there for the horses to rest and refreshing themselves. It was expected to be quite a boring trip, but the conversations going on between every single one of them went on quite pleasantly.

Aruki showed Kou around as they traced their steps further into the woods, because there was a lot to see here, other than just trees. There is a small field of flowers, a surplus of herbs of all types, all sorts of birds and animals, and much more. It's been a while since Aruki got to stepped his feet out of the capital, so he was glad to see that the scenery remained unchanged for the most part.

Their journey continued until they've made it out of the forest, and it was already quite dark when they made it to a town, which situated not very far from the mountain pass that stood between them and Hythe. Isolde then offered to find an inn for them to stay for the night, as it would be quite dangerous to venture through the pass at that time. And Aruki, accompanied by Kou and the rest of the convoy, explore the town for some goodies and information as how far they still have left before making it to their destination.

Well, I could imagine him being just as dense as Aoi when it comes to this, so perhaps he would ask Isolde if she had any love before, and she'd tell him and give him advice or something xD

The first thing that made Kouta nervous about the trip was simply the fact that he was completely surrounded by Exercitus Dei soldiers. He may have gotten used to being around Isolde every day, but knowing how much damage her soldiers had done, Kou still felt a twinge in his stomach when surrounded by them. It still dumbfounds me that Prince Aruki doesn't know what his father and the Exercitus Dei have done to this Kingdom, not to mention so many others. It makes me wonder if his brothers know, and simply aren't telling him... Kouta grimaced at the thought, knowing full well how it felt to be kept in the dark about things. After all, he'd spent most of his life knowing nothing of the state of the world but what he got from eavesdropping. XX
However, his mind was quickly distracted as they made their way through the marketplace. He had only ever been there twice before - once on the day he'd been bought and brought to the city, and once when Aruki had saved his life - and both times he hadn't been paying much attention to his surroundings, so it was like visiting a place for the first time. There were stalls lined up in zigzag lines up and down the city streets, crowds of people bustling about chatting and arguing over prices or the quality of goods. Everything he could think of was being sold here by someone, from clothing to food to jewels to books to animals of all shapes and sizes. And, of course, slaves as well. He lingered for more than a moment near a slave auction. XXX
Despite Kouta's earlier statement about not needing anything, Prince Aruki still seemed adamant on buying him gifts. Kou was quickly turned into a model of sorts, gently coaxed into trying on a variety of different outfits, most of which Kouta never would have been allowed to even dream of wearing had he not been taken in by Aruki. Kouta was also introduced to the world of jewelry, something he never very little about, and he found himself drawn in by how wide a variety of necklaces, bracelets, anklets, rings, and earrings there was. He couldn't help but enjoy the fact that Aruki bought a few for him. XX
Kouta was completely new to the idea of giving gifts, and he couldn't say he didn't like it, though he still felt skeptical about accepting expensive things from a member of the royal family, or anyone who wasn't a slave for that matter. He still made sure to thank Prince Aruki several times, his cheeks growing rose pink with embarrassment every time he did. I wonder what it is Prince Aruki sees in me that makes him want to give me gifts, especially when all I have been so far is a skinny brat who refuses to trust him. Kou continued to chastise himself until they returned to the convoy and headed out. XX
The journey was pleasant, to say the least. There was plenty to enjoy - huge fields of flowers, trees as tall as the castle, animals he'd never even heard of. Aruki took the time to teach Kouta a lot about the different forest creatures, what herbs could help what affliction, which plants were safe to eat, what flowers belonged to what names. I have likely learned more in this one day than I have in my entire life before now. Kou let himself show his emotions freely, though his subconscious still restricted his expressions to a certain degree. A calm, content smile remained on his face for a majority of the day. XX
It was late evening by the time the convoy reached another town. It was a small village, right on the edge of the vast forest and surprisingly bright with life. Music could be heard before they even entered the village. While Isolde went off to find an inn, Kouta followed Aruki into marketplaces to explore. XX
The town's markets were much smaller than those in Demon Civitate, yet they were filled with much more positive energy than the ones Kouta knew. There was music, dancing, chalk art on the roads and delicious scents wafting out from stalls and shops. It was like heaven. Kou wanted more than anything to join in on the dancing, but he also knew the way he'd been taught how to dance would likely be considered obscene outside of a brothel, especially since he was unable to hold up the facade of being female now that he'd cut his hair. Turning from the dancing crowd, Kouta moved to look over a couple of the stalls that were dotted around the square. His gaze lingered on one selling jewelry, and a particular copper locket caught his eye. XX
He recognized it immediately. He'd spent many years of his childhood observing the trinket, running his fingers over the intricate designs and wishing he could have met its previous owner. His aunt had told him it was once his mother's, and that she had given it to him when he was born. There had never been a picture inside - no one had ever drawn or painted her - so instead he'd always filled it with pressed flowers or leaves or tiny sketches his uncle had drawn him. Kouta grabbed the locket in a hurry and felt tears well up in his eyes, until he suddenly grew angry. The locket had been left behind the day he'd been taken, and he hadn't seen his home after he'd left that morning to ride. So how had it ended up here, hundreds of miles away? XX
"Oi, kid, are you going to buy that or what?" Kouta turned to the shopkeeper, glaring at the woman and seething with anger even as tears fell down his cheeks. "Where did you get this?!" He yelled, thrusting the locket in the woman's face. "You have to tell me how you got this! It belonged to my mother! It shouldn't be here! You had to have stolen it, or gotten it from someone who stole it! How did you get it?! Tell me!" His yelling had started to attract attention, and for a moment he forgot he was in a public place, all his focus on finding out just why something had found its way from his home all the way to this random shopkeeper's jewelry stall. They Exercitus Dei...they wouldn't have killed my aunt and uncle, right? They wouldn't have had to... XX

He's not really all that oblivious, he's just never fallen in love before, and has no idea whether his feelings are love or nausea. If Aruki started to flirt with him, for example (as if buying Kou gifts isn't flirting already) he would undoubtedly notice. I do like the idea of him asking Isolde for advice though. He would have to give up a lot of his pride and ignore his hatred of the battalion in order to ask for help of any kind, especially if its in the love department...

Most of the pharmacists had joined Isolde to look for an inn for them to stay the night already, so that left Aruki, Kou, along with the soldiers they brought along exploring and asking information around the town. It wasn't the first time Aruki actually got to leave the capital anyway, so none of them is something that he isn't know of. But nonetheless, it was quite good being able to go out of the city sometimes for a change. Of course, he hasn't forgotten how serious this task is, but there's no rule that told him not to feel a little relieved, is there?

Apparently Aruki and his convoy's arrival had gained quite some attention from the local people. That's quite easy to understand since they don't get to see someone from the royal family and the soldiers from the feared Imperial Army everyday. It seemed that the signature red emblem on the armors of the soldiers following Aruki is intimidating enough to behold, so everyone in town pretend to be as normal as usual.

After having stopped by a map stall, buying a map and asked for the shortest route to Hythe from the merchant, Aruki was intending to catch up with Kou and make their way to the inn that Isolde had just found, so that they can rest for the day and prepare for the straight journey to their destination upon the first light of dawn tomorrow, through the mountain pass. However, there seemed to be a commotion of sort at a jewel and trinket stall not very far from them. So Aruki motioned the soldiers to follow him to investigate.

Upon seeing Aruki and the soldiers, the crowd quickly made way for them and dissipated. And he couldn't be more surprised to see that Kou was arguing with the shopkeeper, "Kou-san? Why are you arguing with her?" He gave his servant a questioning gaze, before turning to the woman, "This is my servant. Can you explain why you are fighting with him?"

The woman politely reported everything to Aruki, about the locket that Kou claimed to belong to him, which was now lying on the ground after he threw it at her. She explained that a merchant from a faraway town found it in an abandoned house and sold it for her. Nodded, Aruki took out from his bag a handful of golden coins and gave it to the shopkeeper, then bending down and picked the locket up.

"Let's go, Kou-san." Aruki hold his servant hand and walked away from the stall, with the soldiers following right behind them. "Here, it's an important object that you've lost, right?" He gave him the locket, with a bright smile, "Next time try not to make another commotion like this again, okay?"

Kouta shut up immediately when Aruki appeared behind him, the shopkeeper looking just as equally frightened. After all, it wasn't every day that you found yourself in the company of a Prince - unless you were Kou, of course. "Kou-san? Why are you arguing with her?" Aruki asked, inquisitively. Kouta didn't answer, wiping furiously at his tears and staring holes into the ground, so the Prince turned to the shopkeeper instead. "This is my servant. Can you explain why you are fighting with him?" The elderly woman explained the ordeal, sounding surprisingly docile after being screamed at by Kou. XX
Kou watched with guilt as Aruki purchased the locket, picking it up from the floor and then leading him away from the vendor. He grew tense at having the Prince's hand around his arm, and wondered if he was going to be punished for causing a scene, until Aruki placed the locket in his hand with a smile. Kou searched his face for anything to indicate he was upset, but found nothing. "Here, it's an important object that you've lost, right? Next time try not to make another commotion like this again, okay?" Kou nodded and held the locket to his chest in one hand, the other clinging to the Prince's sleeve. XX
When the two reached the inn, Kouta found a corner and curled up in it without a second thought, tracing his fingers over the swirling patterns etched into the front. It was worn slightly, but still as he remembered it. Inside the locket were a few brown, dry flattened flowers that he remembered having put in there the day before he'd been taken. They were no longer beautiful, so he crumpled them to dust in his finger and dropped the remains out the nearest window with a blank frown. I suppose my aunt and uncle must be dead then, if what the shopkeeper said was true. They wouldn't have willingly left that house, especially without me to protect. They would've stayed there even if it had been burning to the ground. They truly were the most stubborn people. XX
Gently hanging the locket around his neck, Kouta hugged his knees close and rested his chin on them, thinking. He pondered over how calm and kind Aruki had been concerning his anger spell. Anyone else would've been furious, and yelled at him, or worse. But Aruki had simply found a solution and fixed the issue, even going so far as to grant Kotua his wish of having the locket back in his possession. Every day, something new happened to show simply how compassionate Prince Aruki was, and every day, it astonished Kou more and more, even though he knew he really shouldn't be surprised. XX
He remained by himself, stuck inside his head, until someone came to fetch him. The innkeeper hadn't wanted to fill up all the rooms, since people sometimes came in the middle of the night, so the members of the convoy ended up sharing rooms - and, of course, Kouta ended up sharing a room with Aruki and Isolde. It was definitely a better idea than sharing with the guards, and a much better idea than sleeping alone, so Kou didn't mind. However, he couldn't fall asleep, and while his roommates slumbered, Kouta sat by the window with a sigh, counting the stars one by one until the sun rose again. XX

After the commotion, Aruki and Kou, accompanied by the soldiers, all made their way back to the inn where Isolde had rented out the rooms for them. Of course, she was sitting and drinking an ale of beer in a "like a boss" manner, which is why almost everyone who were presented there felt intimidated just by her mere presence. She said that they have rented out four rooms, and that the soldiers and the pharmacists will share the three room together, while Aruki, Kou and Isolde will stay in the smallest room. It might not be as comfortable as it was back in the castle, but Aruki wouldn't mind.

And so, for the rest of the night, the convoy had done everything they could within the inn to keep themselves going. While there aren't as many people here in comparison with the staff's dining hall in the palace, but the atmosphere felt pretty much the same. The attention surely was turned to them, but the sight of Isolde and the Exercitus Dei soldiers is scary enough so none dare to make a scene.

After dining, they take turn to take a shower. Aruki offered to wash Kou's back, but was politely declined. Though he couldn't help noticing that his servant was blushing at the offer. When it has already gotten late, the whole lot of them retreated back to their rooms and settle for the night. Aruki and Kou were the first to walk into their room, since it was Isolde and any other females in the convoy turn to take their shower.

The first thing Aruki saw as he stepped in was Kou curled into a ball and sat at the corner of his bed. Probably because of the incident earlier... He thought to himself. But just when he decided to strike up a conversation with him to cheer him up, Isolde opened the door and walked in, catching their attention. Well, mainly because of the way she's dressing.

"Geez, Isolde. You still dressed like that whenever you go to bed?" Aruki snickered at her sight. Isolde out of her usual uniform, and was wearing nothing but a long shirt that had just barely covered her thighs, and she doesn't even bother to buttoned up the upper buttons of the shirt, revealing her cleavage.

Isolde shrugged, "Ol' habits don't die easily." She then turned her attention to Kou, "I know what you're thinking, having to share a room with slanderous woman like me. But just bear with it." Isolde is well-aware that the two of them didn't have any interest for women, that's why she always being so casual with them. Not like anyone would have the nerve to hit on her anyway.

The night passed by quietly and by the first light of dawn, they've already packed up their belongings and continued with their journey. The trip was quite pleasant. However, the most of unexpected happened when they've made it half-way through the pass. With her acute sense, Isolde was quick to realize an arrow being shot towards her somewhere, and blocked it swiftly with her rapier. Hiding behind rocks, thugs jumped out and cornered the whole convoy.

"Tch. Encountering bandits in the morning? This kingdom's just getting crazier by the minute." Isolde remarked as she jumped down from her horse. The soldiers also entered their battle stance as they pulled out their swords and defended the pharmacists. Aruki told the Kou to stay right behind him as he too jumped down from his horse,
"Stay close to me."

Kouta hardly so much as looked up when Aruki walked into the room, and didn't even notice Isolde's choice of dress, even when she spoke directly to him. He could hear her sighing when he didn't respond, and simply continued staring out the window. Kou remained in the same position until morning came, eventually dozing off but waking back up the moment the sun rose. It seems to be becoming a habit. He supposed. After they'd all eaten and fed the horses, the convoy set off once again, heading at a steady pace toward the looming mountain pass that would apparently take them straight to Hythe. XX
Kouta was on edge the moment they started through the pass. There were so many things that could go wrong in such a place - avalanche, a blocked path, mountain lion attack. And of course, something bad did go wrong, as they were cornered by bandits only half-way through. Kou was impressed by how Isolde was actually able to block an arrow, but that train of thought was shattered when the full reality of the situation came crashing into his consciousness. Damn, I don't even have anything to defend myself with! Watching as Isolde and her soldiers rushed into battle, Kouta scanned the area for anything that could be of use. "Stay close to me." Cursing inwardly, Kouta slid down off his horse and wrapped the reins tightly around his hand. XXXX
There was action all around him, blood being shed on all sides, yet somehow Kou wasn't very put off by it. He was more concerned about keeping his horse from running off than he was about his own chances of living through the next half hour. He observed as Aruki also unsheathed his sword, easily defending himself and Kou against the few bandits that came their way. One particular enemy had chosen to try and sneak up on the Prince, and Kouta pulled harshly on the reins so Beauty would rear up and kick behind her, effectively throwing the bandit backward into a boulder and knocking him out. XX
"Sorry about that darling, I'll give you a treat later as a reward." Crouching down, Kouta picked up the dagger the bandit had been carrying and held it close, glad he already knew how to handle a knife. Though I can't say the last time I attacked someone with a knife was very successful... Thankfully, he didn't have a chance to use it, since the battle ended only minutes later. It wasn't too surprising, after all, they did have the General of the Exercitus Dei with them. While no one was watching, Kouta slipped the dagger in with his belongings, knowing it might be of good use if another fight arises later on. XX
It didn't take long for the convoy to recover. Nothing had been lost, and no one had been injured, so it was all-in-all a good fight, though Kouta was reluctant to say that any fight could be considered good. Ten minutes passed - mostly spent calming the spooked horses - and then they were off once again, leaving behind the bandits they'd defeated. I think I understand now what Prince Yukazu said about Prince Aruki 'protecting me like a princess'... XX
