β Tenacity is the ability to hang on when letting go appears most attractive. β

It's no secret that Akira has always embraced sports over her studies, Basketball and Track, particularly. Whether it was running from her older brother Adrian after playing a practical joke or turning around and begging him to let her play basketball with him and his friends, Akira spent a majority of her childhood hanging out with boys. She was willing to play anything so she was an easy mark back then. She was shorter, younger, and didn't really know the rules so she spent several years getting her ass handed to her. Despite the boys never 'letting' her win Akira is still a good sport and will play anything as long as she knows the rules. Her hatred of losing and competitive nature has led to Akira becoming athletic and a bit conscious of her BMI so Akira works out a lot.

It's a reckless habit her mother often scolded her for, but Akira has an issue with not exhibiting enough interest in maintaining her own well being when others are in trouble. If she sees someone harassed, she's quick to step in despite her determination to be a less combative person. If she notices someone carrying a heavy stack of books she'll take half of them even if she has somewhere to be. It is both a virtue and a curse as she frequently ends up getting injured or depleting her energy despite having several responsibilities of her own. Akira secretly hides a small portion of her earned income so she can spend money on a few recreational items or presents. She is used to having nothing and being forced to survive on her own so she understands and wishes to lend a helping hand to others as much as possible.

She can't eat even a tiny piece though she absolutely loves the smell and taste. If Akira accidentally eats it within minutes it becomes hard for her to breathe and she has to have an Epinephrine injection to neutralize her response. Unfortunately, Akira has had the allergy since as long as she can remember and eating just one Hershey kiss put her in the hospital once when she was a little girl. While she nearly died, it is one of her fondest memories because she was able to spend the entire day with her mother doting on just her. At the time she didn't realize how close of a call she had, she simply appreciated being the sole object of her mother's attention. Even if she was in the hospital on her birthday, it's one she can never forget because it was the only one where she had without work, Adrian, or her stepfather unintentionally interrupting.

Despite her low immune system and poor eyesight due to albinism Akira never makes excuses to miss a day of school if she can help it. Often when she's feeling especially ill she opts to skip class to rest on the roof or anywhere else she can avoid detection rather than going to the nurse. Admitting she's not feeling well would only arouse suspicion and she cannot risk her previous medical records somehow being dug up from her home country. Although she is fairly confident she disposed of anything that could bring complications to light, she doesn't want to push her luck. For the most part due to lying to her Japanese physician and a bit of controlled arson to her past medical files, she has managed to keep a clean bill of health to participate in sports.

While this is primarily due to Akira never knowing how to function like a normal human being around a guy once she's grown to like him as something more than friends, it has had a lasting impact on her confidence as a girl. It doesn't mean she's never kissed boys on the cheek or something along those innocent lines, as she used to hug her friends and kiss them on the cheek all of the time, male and female alike. Akira was reasonably social back home before the accident but after that, she sort of withdrew from show affection so openly for quite a while. Never having an actual relationship before, Akira's never been on a date and thus she finds it difficult to show males the same affection and loving attitude she openly shows toward her female friends, thus somewhat strengthening her 'male' persona even more for better or for worse.

Getting into fights has always been a knack of Akira's from the time she saw Mulan in theatre. It spoke quite a bit to her young and impressionable mind and while maintaining her friendly nature, but it wasn't odd for Akira to return home with a bloodied nose or split lip. After her mother and stepfather died it seemed Akira found trouble more frequently. It has been well over a year without Akira initiating conflict in any way, but Akira manages to land herself in trouble on a fairly regular basis like taking a punch for Sora. Akira isn't afraid to get her hands dirty for the sake of others and has luckily not broken any bones yet. It's always a gamble and there is a first time for everything.

As she has to keep up the lie of being a male and remember to use only 'male' pronouns in a language that isn't even close to her primary one, Akira often is already overwhelmed, add on her responsibilities as a class president, her commitment to Inryoku, practicing for basketball, and doing occasional fill-in work at a local cosplay cafe... Akira's focus is spread fairly thin. It is not uncommon for her to forget important dates, names, or even plans she has made if not reminded of them. It's not that Akira is trying to be rude, but she can only do so much before details begin to slip through the cracks. While she tries to pretend she can do it all, even Akira knows one day she's going to make a fatal mistake somewhere.

This one while maybe not obvious, is to be expected. Akira didn't spend a lot of time fooling with such things so she has a lot of trouble with it. Aside from basic lip gloss and mascara, Akira is completely clueless and requires assistance. She panics, not very good at putting questionable products near her EYES like a crazy person. In her opinion, no sane person would be comfortable with that. Avoiding it as much as possible. When she fills in during her free time at the maid cafe her boss Kanase, Chiyo often takes it upon herself to doll Akira up as the ivory haired girl is absolutely hopeless on her own. This brings Akira a lot of insecurity in her identity as a girl as it feels like she is 'less than' for having no traditionally 'feminine' skills.

Akira never talks about her older brother, Adrian. Their relationship isn't exactly typical, and it's quite strained, but it has been since they were children so it isn't anything new. Only those who meet him by chance ever discover their relationship as siblings. Akira totally denies his existence as her sibling which is easy enough as he is in college and rarely comes home. When he is home the house is painfully quiet. He is actually a doting older brother and cynical when it comes to boys entering her circle, but she hardly ever invites anyone over in fear of him embarrassing her.

The relationship between Akira and her grandmother is complicated. While they have grown closer in the last year their relationship remains distant. She loves her grandmother and tries to please her. However, Akira's efforts never seem good enough as Misako frequently insults Akira for even minor infractions. Akira's grandmother has very little concern for her, more or less Misako wants someone to take care of her indefinitely so she encourages her granddaughter to find a wealthy boyfriend quickly. The latter would prefer to live a simple life and pursue romantic love over stability. Putting up with the woman's craziness to keep a roof over her head, Akira has never invited friends over in fear of Misako interrogating them.

Akira is unaware that Kaito is her brother, and until he enrolled at Airdalen she had no idea he even existed at all. No one in her family never mentioned him to her and she is afraid to ask about him. There is a lot she doesn't know about her father and she suspects that he is either a long lost cousin, or at worst, a half-sibling from a sexual encounter that occurred around the same time she was conceived which honestly is something she is trying to avoid thinking about because that would mean her family is even more fucked up than she ever imagined. It has never even occurred to her that Kaito could be her twin as her mother kept both her and Adrian. She would never let go of one of her children, at least that is what Akira has grown up believing.

While rarely done in Japan Akira's biological father Yukito disowned his mother Misako for her terrible attitude and behavior. He does not keep in contact with her, therefore, he does not realize how much Akira is struggling. Last he knew, Misako still had her job of making and selling her handmade pottery. He knows that Akira is living with her, but that is the extent of what he knows about his daughter, honoring the promise he made to Elizabeth all those years ago, even though it's unwittingly making his daughter's life incredibly difficult. Akira knows who he is and what he looks like, but she's never tried reaching out as he was the one who abandoned her, having no clue about the promise he made.

Though ill-advised and extremely reckless, Akira would sporadically get in fights with boys and girls alike. She didn't really care, sheβd fight anyone who brought up her parents. Though, there was one incident in particular that stands out among the rest. Not long after she began voluntarily seeing the school counselor to get a grip on her anger, a boy named Luca who she used to fight with frequently decided he was unwilling to let go of their mutual history. He provoked her for weeks but she managed to ignore him. Finally, when he exhausted everything else he could think of he called her mom a whore one day to piss her off, and it worked. Akira slapped him like most people would in that situation. She couldn't walk away after he called her mother that. The slap was all the excuse he needed. After Akira slapped him and attempted to walk away to avoid further violence when she realized she was falling back into conflict the boy punched her. It took her off guard and she fell to the ground and once he had her down he continued to beat her in attempt to provoke her into fighting back again. Akira did her best to shield herself from the assault as he continued to kick and punch her with no one purpose or direction. After a while she instinctively shoved him away from her when the abuse became too much. He wasn't exhibiting any intention of stopping and Akira was terrified that she might get seriously hurt. She didn't even realize the direction sheβd shoved him in due to the tears that clouded her vision. However, Akira's desperate shove made him lose his footing. The boy fell backward and hit his head on a jagged point of a nearby fountain in the center of their neighborhood park.
The blood began pouring from his wound almost instantly, and Akira stared a few moments in horror. She never meant to hurt him, let alone something of that degree. In fear for the boyβs life, Akira ran off to get help. Thankfully the ambulance made it in time and Luca survived with no lasting impairment. Charges were not pressed against Akira as she was only acting in self-defense yet she still is bothered by the events, because under different circumstances that boy could have died or at the very least she could have caused him significant disability. Not long after that Adrian decided it was best to get a fresh start, taking his sister with him to Japan to live with their grandmother. None of them mention the event as Akira continues to shoulder quite a bit of guilt. She is constantly worried that she won't be able to move past it or she might end up losing friends she's made at school if they ever find out the truth about her. Being judged for the darkest time of her life and past violent behaviors are something that keeps her up at night often as she works hard to no longer be that person. That was a tragic time in her life and with medication, she has been able to make it over a year without incident. Under nearly no circumstances will Akira mention her parents as it brings back too many painful memories of them and her accident with that boy.
Over a year later Akira has cut her hair short and returned to her original self for the most part aside from taking on the role of a male. Awkward, hyper, and energetic, Akira still struggles to make connections with other people due to her dishonesty about being a guy. She is an outgoing and kind most of the time, but Akira has been known to try too hard at times. Despite having the best intentions, life has a way of disregarding them. She hopes to get herself together and have a high school experience that when she's old and gray she can look back on it and smile.
