The person Gabriel was is much different from the wraith Reaper is currently. He was a man of mixed African and Latino descent with chocolate brown eyes and dark curly hair. He was a product of the Soldier Enhancement Program — muscular and built for endurance. His main purpose was to fight and survive. He has sported a mustache and goatee combination ever since he could grow facial hair, which added about ten years onto his natural baby face. His clothing of choice is anything dark. It's less conspicuous in his line of work.

As things with Overwatch got more strained, he began caring less and less about the organization and laughed at its expense. He grew more cynical and jealous with age. Gabriel Reyes was born in Los Angeles, California alongside his twin brother, Rafael. The two were the eldest sons of seven children. Gabriel enlisted in the US Army and eventually became a senior officer before joining the Soldier Enhancement Program as Soldier: 24 where he met his future teammate and best friend, Jack Morrison. After the Omnic Crisis began and the UN formed Overwatch, Gabriel accepted the offer to join the effort and led the strike team although he was not viewed as the moral fabric surrounding the team.
Once Overwatch effectively stopped the crisis, Gabriel was passed up for the leadership role of the organization and Morrison was promoted to Strike Commander. Instead of getting his time in the spotlight, Gabriel was placed in charge of Overwatch's covert team — Blackwatch. Envy began to stem inside his heart and he grew to start resenting Morrison for his 'achievements'. It was after his jealousy grew and he was further pushed into the shadows that he enlisted the help of Moira to aid Blackwatch. It was from her recruitment that they began to play with his cellular make-up to give him the powers Reaper possess. He began organizing a rebellion within Overwatch that ultimately spun into the conflict at the Swiss Headquarters between Morrison and himself. He was presumed to be dead after the fallout.
However, he survived at a cost. At the fall of Overwatch, he had already taken up a leadership role in Talon. Alongside over Talon agents, his attempts of assassinate retired agents of Overwatch continued. Stories of a mysterious wraith known as Reaper began to arise. A ruthless mercenary responsible for several terrorist attacks around the world with no apparent allegiance to any one organization. His victims are reduced to drained husks — their decay accelerated exponentially as their very life force has been pulled from them.
