Jake "Honō no ko"

Spirit of the Eastern Frontier

0 · 2,082 views · located in The Snapa-verse

a character in “Nomad Clan”, as played by DarKnight36

Description

Image

"When you're standing on the edge, looking out over that beautiful, deadly desert... Really nothing else quite like it."

Name: Jake
Sex: Male
Age: 22

Physical Description: Jake stands tall and lanky over others, but his build belies a physical power few can match. His skin is deeply tanned and his body has many scars from battles with other clans, monsters, and the elements themselves. Most would consider him rather handsome, with sky blue eyes and a ready smile full of straight white teeth.
Clothing: Jake wears a suit that many would consider unbearable. It is dark and almost fully covers him from the sun. Designs crisscross the front and back of his long coat. His boots are solid and weathered. Strapped to his waist are his sword, pistol, and a strange metallic rod that extends with a flick of his wrist. Jake's most noticeable feature is his broad-rimmed hat, reminiscent of a time long passed...
Height: 205 cm / 6'9"
Weight: 190 lbs
Skin Color: Dark brown to pale brown where the sun hasn't tanned him (which are very few places)
Hair Color: Ruddy brown
Eye Color: Sky Blue

Occupation: Self-proclaimed cowboy and adventurer
History/Bio: Born from the ashes of two rival clans and a legendary love tryst he refuses to talk about, Jake was named "Honō no ko", Child of Flame, and sentenced to die by the remaining members of the Vena and Dera clans. Thrown into the White Ruin, Jake somehow survived the ensuing storm that buried the warring clans beneath its sands and left him at the doorstep of a wandering mercenary, hired to fight in the war. Wounded and battered, the mercenary took Jake in and raised him as his own. Although his adopted father died many years ago, Jake still honors his memory, wandering the depths of the Qafar, calling himself "The Cowboy."

Home Town: None, born within the White Ruin
Native Clan: Vena & Dera clans
Population: Extinct
Settlements: None
Location: Sea of Sand, far east reaches of the Ariket

Personality: Fun-loving and optimistic, Jake tends not to take things very seriously. He seems fascinated with the desert, and rumor has it he's explored more corners of it than anyone else. Jake enjoys loose companionship, but grows uncomfortable with close relationships. He is kind but distant, going out of his way to help those in need if he can. He is very good at remaining detached.
Fears and Desires: Jake fears nothing but that he will not reach his most absurd goal: to conquer the White Ruin and make it his kingdom.

Equipment and Weapons: Jake carries a sword and pistol forged and formed by his father. Although the sword seems like a common weapon, it holds an interesting secret. Jake also carries a rod which extends and locks from a piece about six inches long to a staff six feet long. He often uses this in non-lethal situations. His suit is made of interlocking armor pieces and sturdy material threaded from several different kinds of monster. He claims it is waterproof, although there seems to be no purpose to this.
Styles and Abilities: Jake prefers not to fight seriously, although he enjoys getting in healthy brawls and defending women's honor. He has a lot of experience fighting monsters, and bandits.

So begins...

Jake loved tents. He loved them because it was ridiculously easy, especially at night, to cut a tiny slit in them where one might press their ear or eye, practically unseen in the darkness, and know everything about what was going on inside.

Which is what he happened to be doing right at this moment, at a large red tent in the middle of the camp, surrounded by an empty space of about twenty feet. He assumed this was out of respect, but it made it simple to watch the guards' routes and steal across after they passed. Also no one seemed to dare look at the tent, perhaps for fear that their commander-in-chief would tear their entrails out.

She was the type, Jake mused. She definitely was the type. Smiling to himself, he leaned back, relaxed in a sort of ready-for-anything sort of way and waited to hear more.

Jake entered the healer's tent with a swagger, which was perhaps due to the canteen he held in his hand. Jake took another swig from it as he walked in, yawning.

"Whoa it's like noon already!" Jake sneered at everyone good-naturedly. "This tent's nice and cool, wonder how you Meltsanders managed that one!"

"We could just...ask everyone what they think instead of just speculating in front of yhem," Uluru interjected. "As for the Change, I-," he paused as Jake entered the scene. "Oh, you're still on one piece?" Uluru asked the inebriated explorer. "Sure you didn't puncture any of your bones while you were out roughhousing? If do, we have a good many healers on standby over in this tent."

Jake laughed. "It was a little rough, but I have something special protecting me." Jake tapped his armor. "One of a kind. I've never seen anything that comes close to matching me. The man who sold this to me said it was a relic of the olden times, whatever that means."

Jake took another swig of the canteen. "Anyway, what are you guys talking about? Your epic quest or something?" Jake snickered.

Bohdana was about to answer Mirova wearily - she still didn't trust her. Didn't want to be some kind of weird little assistant for the Naima leader. Afterall, she had grown up being told by Andle that the Naima were bad people and Mirova's little flamethrower incident didn't exactly help disprove her case, but hearing Jake snicker behind her set Boh's determination on fire.

She set her jaw stubbornly, glaring at Jake, "Well, we already know what he thinks 'bout it. What about the idol then, hm? What do'ya think happened there, cowboy?"

"What about it?" Jake said, shrugging. "You told me all you had was some script that needed translation. There happens to be a lot of those lying around, especially out West. I've seen them digging up all sorts of things out of the earth there. None of them have said anything about the Change. What makes you think this is gonna be different?"

Bohdana swallowed her anger, suddenly remembering he wasn't there to witness it, "Oh - you weren't there. Sorry. Magic happened, that's what. Ask everyone here, they all saw proof..." she glanced at Mirova, and then to the others in the group with a sigh, "Or at least, we hope."

She turned back to Jake, a thought popping into her head, "Hey, mister yeehaw, if you're intent on crushing every ounce of hope we have, why are you even still here with us?"

"I might not be much longer," Jake laughed. "Besides, I'm not trying to crush your hopes and dreams. We all want a better life. I just think chasing after fairy tales isn't the best way to get things done."

Jake considered Mirova. "I mean, you have here the Nomad, who don't exactly have a reputation for honesty, nor for credulity. They use the Change in exchange for money and food. It's a business to them."

Jake motioned to Uluru. "And the professor, part of a university that refuses to share its knowledge of the desert to those who need it."

Jake glanced at some of the others. "You've got mercenaries, has-beens, secret stealers... Sure, none of you might be terrible people, but you're not exactly working for the common good." Jake turned a serious expression to Bohdana. "I'm sure you don't care about my opinion, but listen kid, you and I are the only two in this room that I feel actually care about the people who live in this world beyond what our eyes see."

"Could be wrong though," he said after a moment. Jake paused and took a long drink from his canteen, emptying it and wiping his mouth. Burping slightly, Jake sighed. "Could be wrong about that."

Dustin had been paying close attention to the conversation between Uluru and Bohdana, especially after the Naima had joined. He didn't trust Mirova whatsoever. Not after the surprise attack. She hadn't given them any reason of the sort to begin trusting her. They simply had a mutual goal, thus worked together. The moment they ceased to be of any use to her, she'd likely drop them. He would be ready for that.

The Kassellander didn't think he'd wince twice within the next few minutes, yet here he was, cringing extremely hard at the sight of the Samariamian grovelling at the feet of Slatheurian. Though he too was grateful, Dustin would not have gone through such lengths to show his appreciation.

It was all he could do to keep his expression from showing the scowl he felt his face forming when the Cowboy-Ninja, apparently named Jake, strode in somewhat obnoxiously with drink in his hand. He was a hard man it seemed. One who had been out in the sands longer than most, supposedly. He'd respect him for that, but he wouldn't respect his demeanor. His comments to Boh about everyone else present as if they weren't standing there clearly listening to them weren't welcome either. Dustin's right eyebrow twitched ever so slightly.

"You are very wrong, Mister Yeehaw," commented Dustin, his accent making the "nickname" sound that much more awkward. He turned to fetch Schraussfeng and its sheath from his bedside as he spoke. "My eyes aren't out only for myself, but for my people, and the people beyond them. I don't know when you were last in Ariket, but if I had choice between what we have now, and what could be after I saw what the Change," he nodded towards the idol, "was capable of, I'd choose that." He looked to Aisha, still embarrassingly at the Meltsander's feet. "And I'd share it wherever I went, just like this orator of false notions."

"I can't possibly imagine you'd be referring to me when you speak of false notions," Aisha responded, somewhat accusingly, but she soothed her tone out before continuing, "It is my sole duty to help others and make life better for everybody, and although I would put it in less harsh terms, I would have to agree with Mister Yeehaw's understanding on the nature of things." Aisha said that completely unironically, apparently assuming that was his actual name. "But I don't blame anybody, no, not for any crime that is caused by misdirection. Such is the unfortunate circumstance that has been cast upon us all. Indeed, it is my goal to redirect as many as I can onto the right path, but ultimately, my only wish to help, and all of you, who have been so kind to me, are among those I wish to help most," Aisha looked between Bohdanna and Skullivan, "Some of whom, I owe promises and debts,"

Aisha then turned to look back at Dustin, although it was obvious she was addressing the group, "I will not debate faith with you, if that will prevent me from helping you, and in turn, I will trust that you will not discredit my own beliefs." Aisha had a defiant look on her face, like she was set on her word, but, then she proceeded to bow again, "I deeply apologize for offending or angering anyone in any way, and I apologize for the inflexibility in my ability to adopt your beliefs. If there is any way I could serve you to clear up any grudge or unforgiveness, please, I beg that you tell how to do so."

Bohdana seemed to be off in her own thoughts, contemplating their words carefully. She glanced at Jake, giving him a sort of meaningful look, before turning back to Mirova with a nod and separating herself from the conversation.

Boh sat on the edge of her cot, grabbing her brown boots and beginning to slide them on her feet. In the distance she heard the sounds of the war camp - louder than last night - and wondered just how many of those soldiers had killed before. Her thoughts extended to the rest of the group. How many had they killed. How many of them were good people.

Although she wasn't blind to reality, one of her uncle's most moral truths was that he never killed anyone, and if he had to, he'd find away around it. If that didn't work, and only then, would he very reluctantly do so. But Boh had never witnessed him do so. Nevertheless, he was no longer here. A sort of bitter feeling washed over her as she tugged on her boots and stood, slinging her tanned cloak around her shoulders and clasping the sides together. She went to lift up her travelers back pack and stopped for a moment, staring at the magnet rifle as these thoughts went through her head.

Would she? Could she?

She glimpsed at the group. It was Andle who mostly dealt with hostile situations, she hoped that the more experienced adults would as well if it came to it.

Boh would have to trust them.

Aisha should have apologized and she certainly knew that she was supposed to apologize, but, the evil feeling of defiance had taken her. "No," was her response, "I think I will preach. The power of words is mutually understood to be highly powerful, so, let me make use of my power to speak, for it is clear that there are some things that must be said in order to help us all." With that, Aisha stood up and raised a hand, indicating authority. She cleared her throat.

"My fellows," Aisha declared to the rest of the tent, "It is clear that we are all victims of circumstance, in one way or another. We have all experienced the same attacks and witnessed the same things, and here we all are, at a crossroad of interests. We all have our own beliefs and our own loyalties, but, what we all saw was undeniable. Yes, I admit that it appeared extraordinary, but to call it the Change is quite a brash label. Still, it is clear that, Change or not, this is something worth investigating, something that could possibly improve lives, should we continue this line of pilgrimage. After all," Aisha glanced at Skullivan, "We are clearly not the only ones investigating this."

"So, our situation is as such: She who claims leadership," Aisha glanced at Mirova, careful not to announce her clan, "Wishes to continue this investigation. Bare in mind that there will likely be many risks in doing so, for it is clear that there are people who are willing to harm us to gain what we have. Those of you who are motivated by greed and personal gain, leave now, and you may find forgiveness." Aisha looked back at Mirova and said, "Nobody is an exemption."

"Those of you who remain selfless, those of who wish to help Skullivan, those of you who are willing to give up their biases and grudges for the sake of assisting others, those of you who seek righteous path, and those of you who wish to find the Change. If any of these apply to you, then, pledge yourself to Skullivan now, as well as to the others in this room who are also willing to pledge, and swear that you will clear all grudge in order to be willing to help the others around you, regardless of your aquaintence with them. Such are the terms of pilgrimage." Aisha turned to Skullivan and bowed. "I, Aisha Abdul'la, grant you authority over my actions."

"Well... whilst I'm still not too sure of this Skullivan person, I can't turn down someone in need." Xaverius had kept himself quiet for quite some time, mainly because he thought he was being a bit too abrasive during earlier events, he'd used this time to contemplate all these other faces he was now around, what their personalities were like, such as the very bold Aisha, who he was only just now interacting with, though he was not sure how someone like her would take a scavenger such as him, but as long as he kept to his morals he set out on when he started his life, he was sure they'd at least not hate each-other. "When I set out on my own 22 years ago, I made one of my goals to be to help whoever needed it, make the wastes less of a hell for everyone, y'know? So yeah, I'll help Skullivan out with whatever he needs, besides, I can understand why he ran away from the Wetlanders, not a nice bunch." He took a quick glance at everyone, just to better adjust himself with their faces. "Also to all those here who don't know me, I'm Xaverius Rusten, a scavenger, nice to meet ya all!" He put on a cheery grin with his introduction, as late as it was.

Jake waited until Slatheurian left the tent, before muttering something to the sole healer remaining in the tent. The healer glanced at Jake for a moment, then nodded and stepped outside as well. Jake waited another moment, then rapped his metal club loudly against the tent pole, hoping to gather everyone's attention.

"All right, listen up!" Jake said, taking his hat off and sighing. "We've got a problem. The Meltsanders don't believe we're refugees. They think we're looking for something, which, isn't strictly wrong. But they're not going to let us go just like that, we're going to have to work together, and figure something out."

Just when I thought being around this Creed acolyte was awful, I found out I'm stuck with her. Fantastic. Dustin looked to Jake. "We cannot just fight our way out of here, obviously. I'm not confident in the stealthy abilities of our entire party either."

Musa was sitting upright in her cot, her skin prickling and her left hand absently stroking at her right braid. Each time a training explosion sounded she would visibly tense before quickly relaxing and narrowing her eyes. Explosions meant impending doom. Explosions made her head pound and churned up memories from some day that was cold and wet. While stuck in her state of jumpiness, her eyes latched onto anything moving, examining it for a minute before focusing on something else. This place was no good for her. She felt like an exposed nerve.

The medics had done good for her, applying ointment to the small spots where her skin was burned and dried, refilling her empty stomach, and quencing her thirst. She had thanked each medic that tended to her with a nod and a touch of her hand, as she had done to Ka'Wa earlier.

Still on edge, she was listening to Aisha giving her speech. The female irked Musa, but not so much right now. The priestess had been incapacitated for a quite some time, enoughh to flush herself out of Musa system some. Her words now had the huntress thinking of her own part in the beginnings of what would undoubtedly be a long and hard journey. I do this to make a name for myself and my people. To rise higher than I already am. To better myself. Is that so bad..? I am putting my entire being into the task. Giving every iota of strength.. Her gaze slid over everyone in the tent, golden and bright and thinking.

Before her thought process could continue she tensed again at another explosion while trying to focus on the man announcing that they had to leave or figure out a story for them truly being here. Musa stroked the nose of the skull on her head. "Maybe with the cart, we can pass ourselves off as traveling merchants escaping the ill-fated Dol-Duna." She spoke up, her voice clear throughout the tent in response to the brim-hatted man. Others kept calling him a 'Cowboy' or a 'Yeehaw' but she had no idea what those were.

"Stealth is probably out," Jake agreed with Dustin. Turning to Musa, he said, "If we were merchants, why would we lie about that? Where are our goods? It's also probably too similar to our refugee story to be credible."

Jake looked around. "I wouldn't suggest fighting our way out either; I don't think there's many of us that are ready for that right now, and we're pretty outnumbered."

Ka'Wa raised an eyebrow. Most of the members of the small group had taken it upon themselves to lead the discussion in the group. It had gone from Aisha's proclamation of loyalty towards Skullivan to Xaverius' introduction of himself to Jake's attempt at leader and ended upon Elise's emotional outburst. What was most remarkable however was Aisha and Jake's words.

The knight herself did not know if she wanted to join the group. Bohdana knew of Ka'Wa's wishes to return home but the reason for her to return to Dol Duna was to not upset her mother. Ka's father had passed away not even four months ago and for her daughter to disappear, well, that was cruel. But after seeing how changed Slatheurian seemed to be gave Ka'Wa pause.

Back in Dol Duna, she had tried to help Skullivan, emboldened by the suggestion he was part of something bigger. She hadn't thought too much about it then but now, Ka'Wa bit her lip. Well now, she was part of something bigger. She wasn't just a shop helper. She could be a part of this group of adventurers if she chose to stay with them. Slatheurian's words rung in her head, We were dirt there...

"Look, we don't have enough information yet," Ka'Wa spoke up, suddenly embarrassed as she felt eyes turn upon her. "I m-mean, I know Slatheurian and I might be able to get more information. He's gone to get the commander though so right now, we might as well figure out what kind of situation we're in before we start thinking up of plans."
