Uluru

The slayer of beasts on the hunt for and an even greater quarry...

0 · 769 views · located in The Snapa-verse

a character in “Nomad Clan”, as played by PirateofPie

Description

"To survive in these lands, you do what you have to"

Image
Name: Uluru
Sex: Male
Age: 39

Physical Description: A dark skinned man with tall stature and an alert demeanor, Uluru is fairly well built, clearly one who has traversed a good deal of the Sea of Sand's dangerous sands before. A prematurely graying ponytail of dreadlocks and a worn expression on his face oftentimes makes him seem older than he actually is. He has a shave beard, with cuts around his chin that suggest, he often does the shaving himself, and not without mishap.
Clothing: White and blue scale-like material acts as body armor for Uluru. On his hands he sports thicker armored white gloves with jagged black circuitry acting as stripes and odd indentures on the back, meant to be used to fit crystals into He sports a brown cloak to shield him from sandstorms and other temperamental weather phenomenons of the Sea of Sand. A mask, resembling a welding mask hangs from his neck. When the weather gets especially rough he puts it on for extra protection. A blue sash is tied around his waist, holstering a variety of weapons and gadgets on his person.
Height: 6'3
Weight: 243
Skin Colour: Dark brown
Hair Colour: Black and gray
Eye Colour: Brown

Occupation: Monster Slayer
History/Bio: A man who has traversed the Sea of Sand for quite some time, occasionally traveling alone and occasionally alongside caravans, Uluru has found a living for himself by making the use of the unique skills he acquired during his tenure at the university. Skills of survival and how to fend off the various creatures that roam the desert and prey on the unsuspecting. There was good trade to be had in the pelts, eyes, horns, and other various body parts of these monsters, as well as many a grateful settlement willing to pay handsomely in food and drink in return for their continued well being. Caravans often hired him as a bodyguard in order for him for that very same reason and he gladly accepted.

And while the food and drink was more than welcome, Uluru did not choose to leave the safety of the university for no particular reason...he was searching for something. Someone perhaps. Why else would he leave a haven so safe? Normally a talkative sort if one gets him going, although one would not guess that from looking at him, any who caught him alone would see him staring into the night sky, contemplative and pensive, wondering where it all went wrong...
Home Town: The Solemn Shores- a massive sprawling settlement along the coast of the Toxic Sea,
Native Clan: The University
Population: Around 7300
Settlements: The Solemn Shores, which itself is a sizable chunk of the Toxic Sea's shoreline.
Location: The coast of the Toxic Sea
Description: From it's inception just around eighty years ago, the University has been a bastion of learning in the Sea of Sand. Though knowledge of the old world had long been lost and forgotten, a gathering a of studious minds determined that thorough knowledge of the world and it's secrets would be the key to bringing a sense of education and wonder and in a world where such virtues were often forgotten. These studious minds labored for two decades, fortifying and securing an area many had claimed inhospitable and shaping it for their own use. Now where was once an ominous dunes of sand lies a massive building in the center of a impressive array of settlements and houses, guarded by a massive stone wall that encompasses the settlement.

A thriving community dedicated to teaching survival in the sands and the importance of the procurement and study of Taqa Crystals and anything pertaining to the Old World. Though it is well known along the eastern Sea of Sand, in the west, denizens of the desert are likely not to have heard much of it other than the name and the fact that it's some sort of school.

Personality: Uluru's general demeanor and attitude aren't quite what one expects from an honored graduate of the university. He speaks frankly and can be very talkative at that, he doesn't quite hesitate to say the first thing that comes to mind, though one always gets the feeling he's holding something back. Regrets, perhaps? He tends to find the humor in odd situations, often reacting with wry amusement, possibly from a a countless amount of time spent wandering the hazardous environments. Despite being a slayer of monsters and beasts, he does not find any particular joy in killing them ,seeing it only as a job.In fact he seems to have a fondness for the creatures of the sands, enjoying discovering what little of nature can thrive in these harsh lands, including people. More than anything he's impressed by the human tenacity even in the harshest of lands.

He can be a bit belligerent around others can put his own goals ahead of others. He has a big interest in learning about the lands surrounding the Sea of Sand and their various cultures.
Fears and Desires: His fear and desire revolve around each other. He doesn't want to lose track of whatever he's searching for our in the west for he cannot or will not return home without it and of course he desires to find any clue that can bring him closer to what he seeks. Another desire of his is knowledge about the various cultures that surround the sea of sand, but our otherwise complete unknowns to the denizens of the desert.

Equipment and Weapons:Sports a incision in his gloves that, with a crystals fitted inside, causes the black lines of circuitry to glow yellow and fire out a stunning burst of bio-electricity from afar. He also wields a scimitar for close ranged fighting. his belt is lined with numerous cloth pouches. Half of which store crystals that are augmented to act as grenades with various attributes. The other half are essentially poisons made from a mishmash of rare desert vegetation and the remains of his quarry. As far as other weapons goes, he has a pair of metallic silver boomerangs made of an mineral found in several mines near the University.

Not quite equipment either but he also has a mount. Yanyan, a sand ray, a giant fish-like creature the size of a horse that levitates off of the ground, providing Uluru with transport, though it's not particularly fast. It also acts as his personal messenger, carrying the pelts of various monsters he's killed to those who wanted them dead and returning to Uluru with the bounty.
Styles and Abilities: Uluru fights tactically, often planting traps and various other tricks of his trade to hurt his prey before he's even begun fighting. When he's personally fighting, he is able to hold his own, by fighting agilely, moving striking and darting or rolling somewhere around his opponent to get at them from another angle.

So begins...

Skullian frowned at Bohdana, remaining silent before opening the pack of Andle's belongings. He pulled out a blue tunic from it and hastily pushed it on, ripping off the remaining black tatters of his uniform and kicking it into the fire. He grabbed a white cloak, wrapping it around his body as quickly as he could - giving out a loud sigh of relief as the cold no longer hit his bare flesh. "What the hell's the north star?" Skullivan sighed. "Will it get us to a town? Because if the Nomad and the idol are out there, we have to find it - and that means healing up our sick."

"The north star is the worlds natural compass. It'll tell us where north is and therefore which way to go. It should be right over...aaah..." Bohdana pointed up to the sea of stars. There were millions. Billions. Thousands of different constellations and even more notably bright stars. Boh swallowed, hunting the sky with a glare.

Look for a star that's brighter than the rest, usually sorta separated from everything else.

Bohdana frowned as Andle's voice rung in her head. That wasn't very helpful. She glanced back down to Skullivan, "I'll uh, I'll find it, don't you worry. In the meantime Andle and I always kept medical supplies in our packs. Maybe it'd be best to rest up for the night or...I don't know."

"You know, it's actually a pretty stupid idea to rest up for the night when we don't even know where we'll go in the morning," Skullivan frowned, standing up and keeping his newly adorned white-cloak from flying into the fire. "Sorry... it's just- whatever, we'll get out here together." Skullivan nodded, glancing at Uluru. "Figure out where we're going once we know we're actually all going. Come on," He pulled out some medical supplies from the bag. "Help me hand this stuff out to the wounded."

"Watch the mouth, kid," Uluru shot back. "I don't exactly have all the time in the world..." he muttered to himself before turning to look at the others. "Alright we're all a bit scattered about! If any of the wounded are still ailing I have some remedies to ease the pain that we can hand out!" He called out.

As Thessir stood up Musa moved back to give him the space needed to do so, her eyes watching him the entire time. She would stand but hurling up the contents of her stomach a few hours ago was now having its side effects. It felt like her stomach was caving in on itself and the pangs were starting to give her a serious headache and a bit of dizziness, especially if she were to stand.

"Are you feeling as you are normal? Any part still hurt?"

"I vomitted earlier.." She pointed to exactly where with a bit of a shaky finger. Not only was hunger making her unsteady but so was the cold. She should've dragged those blankets over with her "..So there are knives in my belly from it being empty for so long." She hummed before taking a long inhale to try and soothe her swimming head. While inhaling, she watched his large eyes scan her body. Her own eyes analyzed him for any ill intent behind his action but she could only see puzzlement in his pale features along with a sort of itching curiosit to know something. As if a burning question were on the tip of his tongue.

"Will you grant me permission to touch the jugular? I promise no harm will come as a result of the action. It should also not be of discomfort."

Giving an audible puff through her nose, she lifted her chin slightly while her eyes looked over his shoulder to examine the other group of people who's chatter was just beginning to register to her ears. Before, it was just sounds at the back of her mind, now it was words that were catching her interests. She then blinked and realized she hadn't answered the male in front of her. "I will give you my name first. Then you will give me yours.. That will be your grant of permission." She looked up at him. "I am Musa Grazing Bull of the Lakuli Clan that shelters in the hot regions of Margesh." She then awaited his name, and after he would tell her, she would be curious to know more while he found her pulse. But when she opened her mouth to ask, people from the group broke off after being called to do so. And after some yelling from the loud mouth Wetlander and a firm scolding from a girl amored for the desert.

The man with the fleshy butterfly dropped off medicines after the Wetlander came over to ask if she needed the ones in his hands.

"You guys need anything? Medical supplies, stuff for wounds?"

"Food would be better for me. I would also ask for water but I know it is most likely not at hand, so I will wait until it is available." Her tone held a slight accent since she usually spoke in the Lakuli tongue. She pulled vowels and shushed certain letters because of it. Her talking was also very direct and without contractions, as her language didn't have short cuts.

Uluru walked about camp, having finally took stock of what he still had on him. More or less the essentials....aside from food and drink. Thankfully, thete was at least some to spare as Uluru walked towards the fire that had been started and saw the pink haired woman, who he remembered had asked him to assist her in fighting Salamands back at the market.

"Huh, it's you, from the market, right?" Uluru askes casually as he approached. "Now that I'm starting to see familiar faces pop up all around this little gathering we've got here, I'm starting to think that the Change may have something to do with this after all," he chuckled. "Maybe we're destined to find it..." he sighed, glancing over at what was roasting on the fire. Sand rats from the looks of it. Not much in regards to taste, but it was better than nothing. The apples would help, but only a bit.

"You remember where you found those?" Uluru asked out of curiosity, as sand rats usually traveled in large colonies, foraging wherever there was an abundance of food...which this part of the desert didmt exactly have in spades.

Whisper smiled at the familiar face that approached. She wasn't sure how long it had been since they were fighting Salamands together, but if felt as though a year had passed. So much had changed, she had changed. Her hands had done things that couldn't ever be taken back. But, Whisper didn't have time to dwell on such things at the moment. That could wait for when she tried to sleep next.

"Hey, Stranger." Whisper called, "You may have a point there. All that has happened to us seems too planned to be random. What are the chances that we would all survive a jump like that? Let alone find each other afterwards." The pink haired woman sized up the capable warrior she'd watched before. He also seemed different. Perhaps THE Change was already beginning by changing all of them.

Grabbing a plank of wood from the pile that hadn't yet burned, Whisper Slid a piece of meat from the stone onto the makeshift plate. "Well," she pondered, "I believe it was about 2 miles that way." She pointed to the south, the way she had entered into camp. "I only saw these two. They might have been scouts or stragglers of the swarm." Handing the plank to the dark man in front of her she added, "I'll go with you to search for more if you'd like."

"No thanks, I think if these are stragglers, their pack has probably migrated far from here by now. They usually do that when chased off by something..." Uluru noted, trailing off. "But in this case, it was probably the commotion caused by the airship...probably," he shrugged.

The thick cotton-mix smell of smoke washed in and out of Thessir's senses with the gusts of wind. As he grew aware of the new day he could feel it pass over him, hot bits of ash falling on his skin and flying off a second later. The sound of relentless burning could be heard, Thessir opening his eyes to reveal the bright-sunlight shinning through the burning roof of his tent, black and grey curls of smoke blasting out like a raging furnace. His hut was on fire.

Outside Skullivan lazily opened his eyes. A burning hut in the distance was the first thing he saw. "Thessir?" Skullivan began, suddenly snapping awake as he scrambled to his feet. "THES-" Suddenly a blast of fire smashed at his feet, igniting into the air as it hit the sand. Skullivan stumbled back, looking up to where the shot had come from.

His eyes trailed up the wall of the dune, where at the top a figure stood - covered head to two in desert coverings and a thick hood. The figure held some sort of rifle in hand - a fire-launcher, connected to a large three-crystal generator in the sand beside them. "Good morning!" The figure called down from the sunlight, causing launching a few more fire-shots around the camp - they exploding upon impact with the sand and rocking the entire group into awakeness.

"You guys don't look so good!" The figure began as a small, wheeled robot came into view at their feet. From the mechanical creature's back a jug of water balanced. The figure pulled the jug out and casually poured it onto themselves, drinking it messily as liquid splashed down their robes. After a few moments the figure stopped even pretending to drink the water, emptying the rest into the ground.

Skullivan frowned as a few drops rolled down the top of the dune. His lips were very dry.

Uluru instinctively woke up as the sounds and smells of sputtering flame ignited his hut. Quickly rolling out before the whole thing came crashing down in a blaze, he looked outside to see the whole camp being set ablaze.

The arsonist in question a figure in the distance, basically wasting water. "You get all kinds in Qatar..." Uluru muttered, drawing his sword in one hand and reaching towards the crystals on his belt in another, before speaking louder, "From the look of it, he could be a raider..." Uluru glanced over at the fire launching assailant and shouted over the dunes at him. "We don't have anything you want! Leave us be!"

The sound of flames and intense heat drug Elise from her sleep. She'd fallen asleep outside the tent, using her bag as a makeshift pillow. Uluru and Skullivan were watching the Arsonist, who wasted enough water to keep each of them hydrated for the day. She scowled and jumped to her feet, shaking the sand from her hair as she drew her daggers from their sheaths which were housed on the small of her back. Their gemstones glittered in the morning sun as she exposed the crystal compartments. "Why?" she asked, shoving a crystal into each hilt, igniting the blades with a strange blue aura. "You get off on attacking innocent people?" She was standing beside Uluru now, who seemed more annoyed than angry.

In response the figure shot the fire-launcher from the hip, a fire-ball smashing into Uluru's body and setting him ablaze. The figure laughed and casually pulled out a pear.

"STOP IT! DON'T- I'M GOING TO HIT YOU!" Skullivan screamed, backing away from the fires of the camp. "LEAVE US ALONE!"

"Innocent people?" The arsonist commented, taking another bite of their pear. "Innocent people don't get arrested by Wetlanders, do they?"

Uluru quickly tossed his cloak to the ground as it was set ablaze and stomped it into the sand to douse it's fires. "You think of the Wetlanders as paragon of right and wrong?" He growled, frustrated at the state of his favorite cloak. "That's your first mistake..."

Uluru raised his glove, the crystal powering it causing it to glow yellow, but as he raised his hand at their attacker, he fired off a quick shot at the robot instead, causing a small explosion to go off near the Arsonist.

The arsonist let out a scream as the mini-explosion sent them toppling over, the generator falling beside them in the sand. Skullivan paused at the explosion, glancing at Uluru, and then back at the dune - as if expecting a sudden comeback attack. There was none, the figure simply laying at the top of the dune as the robot smoked beside them. With a breath Skullivan sprinted forward, ripping his cloak off and running up to Thessir's hut. With a heave he began to smack the flames out off the hut's fabric - extinguishing them as best he could.

At the top of the dune the arsonist pushed themselves back up. "That was expensive!" The arsonist yelled. "That's not very fair, is it? I tracked you guys down all the way from Dol-Duna!"

Dustin had shot up straight to his feet when their camp was attacked. He watched in horror as the man called Uluru was set ablaze like it was nothing only to sigh in relief when it was merely his cloak that took the damage. The Kassellander scowled and drew his curved sword Schraussfeng from the scabbard on his back.

"From Dol-Duna?" he called back. "So a bountyhunter then? Did the Wetlander's send you after us?"

The character at the top of the dune adjusted their hood at the words whilst Skullivan continued to put the fires out. "They didn't send me," The arsonist replied to Dustin, grabbing hold of the generator and pulling it back upright. "And their reward doesn't interest me. No, I'm more curious how exactly you got from their ship to out here - and mostly all together."

"See, you have one half of the puzzle" A gloved finger pointed down the dune at Skullivan as he breathed a sigh of relief, having at last extinguished the fires from Thessir's hut.

"And I have the other half." The figure put a hand behind their back and pulled out an object - glimmering in the distant sun-light. An statue of gold. "I have a wagon - with food and water, you can't see it down there, but trust me - it's very nice. You give me the traitor and I'll save you all." The figure reached down, placing the idol gently in the sand at their feet. "And if not -" Their hands then moved toward the rifle part of the fire-launcher. "Then I'll take him."

As Skullivan watched the scene he spotted Musa, laying weakly at the entrance of Thessir's destroyed hut. "Oh my- GOD," He breathed heavily, going to her side. "What is this, what's this- pain," He stuttered, looking over Musa's ash covered face before glancing back up at the standoff happening at the top of the dune. "Musa- we're in a bit of trouble here."

The arsonist paused, a smile forming beneath the hood. "I have a passing... academic interest in the Change, but I don't know who you are. Don't know if you could be trusted." The arsonist called down, still gripping the fire-launcher firmly. "There's a reason the Nomads search for the Change when the rest of this desert lays complacent, fighting among themselves like children." The arsonists paused, a slight quiver in their voice. "It's hard.

The arsonist began to pace on the top of the dune. "I don't know it's not a fake - I'm here on the wetland traitor's word, like all of you," The arsonist began. "I offer water or fire. We can either negotiate or we cannot." They rose the nozzle of the fire-launcher into the air, aiming it down at the camp below. "Your choice."

"Negotiation's on the table," Uluru began slowly, sheathing his sword and taking a couple steps further towards the arsonist. "We have somewhat of an interest in the change as well," he informed the reasonable arsonist. "And as for if you can trust us...truth be told, when we were captured by the Wetlanders. Still barely know eachother now. A man died, trying to help save us and with his dying words, he only brought one thought to mind...The Change. I believe in it. I want to find it. The many odd coincidences that seem to surround that topic lately have done little to dissuade me in thinking that it's really out there..."

"Where did you get the idol?!" Elsie felt the tension rise as the Arsonist tried to "negotiate". "Of course searching for the Change is hard, but you have no deal! The last person I saw with that idol was a woman, what have you done with her?" Elsie thought back to the eccentric tent, the exotic smells, and of course, Mirova. "What have you done with Mirova!?" She screamed, spinning her blades in her hands.
