Uluru

The slayer of beasts on the hunt for and an even greater quarry...

0 · 712 views · located in The Snapa-verse

a character in “Nomad Clan”, as played by PirateofPie

Description

"To survive in these lands, you do what you have to"

Image
Name: Uluru
Sex: Male
Age: 39

Physical Description: A dark skinned man with tall stature and an alert demeanor, Uluru is fairly well built, clearly one who has traversed a good deal of the Sea of Sand's dangerous sands before. A prematurely graying ponytail of dreadlocks and a worn expression on his face oftentimes makes him seem older than he actually is. He has a shave beard, with cuts around his chin that suggest, he often does the shaving himself, and not without mishap.
Clothing: White and blue scale-like material acts as body armor for Uluru. On his hands he sports thicker armored white gloves with jagged black circuitry acting as stripes and odd indentures on the back, meant to be used to fit crystals into He sports a brown cloak to shield him from sandstorms and other temperamental weather phenomenons of the Sea of Sand. A mask, resembling a welding mask hangs from his neck. When the weather gets especially rough he puts it on for extra protection. A blue sash is tied around his waist, holstering a variety of weapons and gadgets on his person.
Height: 6'3
Weight: 243
Skin Colour: Dark brown
Hair Colour: Black and gray
Eye Colour: Brown

Occupation: Monster Slayer
History/Bio: A man who has traversed the Sea of Sand for quite some time, occasionally traveling alone and occasionally alongside caravans, Uluru has found a living for himself by making the use of the unique skills he acquired during his tenure at the university. Skills of survival and how to fend off the various creatures that roam the desert and prey on the unsuspecting. There was good trade to be had in the pelts, eyes, horns, and other various body parts of these monsters, as well as many a grateful settlement willing to pay handsomely in food and drink in return for their continued well being. Caravans often hired him as a bodyguard in order for him for that very same reason and he gladly accepted.

And while the food and drink was more than welcome, Uluru did not choose to leave the safety of the university for no particular reason...he was searching for something. Someone perhaps. Why else would he leave a haven so safe? Normally a talkative sort if one gets him going, although one would not guess that from looking at him, any who caught him alone would see him staring into the night sky, contemplative and pensive, wondering where it all went wrong...
Home Town: The Solemn Shores- a massive sprawling settlement along the coast of the Toxic Sea,
Native Clan: The University
Population: Around 7300
Settlements: The Solemn Shores, which itself is a sizable chunk of the Toxic Sea's shoreline.
Location: The coast of the Toxic Sea
Description: From it's inception just around eighty years ago, the University has been a bastion of learning in the Sea of Sand. Though knowledge of the old world had long been lost and forgotten, a gathering a of studious minds determined that thorough knowledge of the world and it's secrets would be the key to bringing a sense of education and wonder and in a world where such virtues were often forgotten. These studious minds labored for two decades, fortifying and securing an area many had claimed inhospitable and shaping it for their own use. Now where was once an ominous dunes of sand lies a massive building in the center of a impressive array of settlements and houses, guarded by a massive stone wall that encompasses the settlement.

A thriving community dedicated to teaching survival in the sands and the importance of the procurement and study of Taqa Crystals and anything pertaining to the Old World. Though it is well known along the eastern Sea of Sand, in the west, denizens of the desert are likely not to have heard much of it other than the name and the fact that it's some sort of school.

Personality: Uluru's general demeanor and attitude aren't quite what one expects from an honored graduate of the university. He speaks frankly and can be very talkative at that, he doesn't quite hesitate to say the first thing that comes to mind, though one always gets the feeling he's holding something back. Regrets, perhaps? He tends to find the humor in odd situations, often reacting with wry amusement, possibly from a a countless amount of time spent wandering the hazardous environments. Despite being a slayer of monsters and beasts, he does not find any particular joy in killing them ,seeing it only as a job.In fact he seems to have a fondness for the creatures of the sands, enjoying discovering what little of nature can thrive in these harsh lands, including people. More than anything he's impressed by the human tenacity even in the harshest of lands.

He can be a bit belligerent around others can put his own goals ahead of others. He has a big interest in learning about the lands surrounding the Sea of Sand and their various cultures.
Fears and Desires: His fear and desire revolve around each other. He doesn't want to lose track of whatever he's searching for our in the west for he cannot or will not return home without it and of course he desires to find any clue that can bring him closer to what he seeks. Another desire of his is knowledge about the various cultures that surround the sea of sand, but our otherwise complete unknowns to the denizens of the desert.

Equipment and Weapons:Sports a incision in his gloves that, with a crystals fitted inside, causes the black lines of circuitry to glow yellow and fire out a stunning burst of bio-electricity from afar. He also wields a scimitar for close ranged fighting. his belt is lined with numerous cloth pouches. Half of which store crystals that are augmented to act as grenades with various attributes. The other half are essentially poisons made from a mishmash of rare desert vegetation and the remains of his quarry. As far as other weapons goes, he has a pair of metallic silver boomerangs made of an mineral found in several mines near the University.

Not quite equipment either but he also has a mount. Yanyan, a sand ray, a giant fish-like creature the size of a horse that levitates off of the ground, providing Uluru with transport, though it's not particularly fast. It also acts as his personal messenger, carrying the pelts of various monsters he's killed to those who wanted them dead and returning to Uluru with the bounty.
Styles and Abilities: Uluru fights tactically, often planting traps and various other tricks of his trade to hurt his prey before he's even begun fighting. When he's personally fighting, he is able to hold his own, by fighting agilely, moving striking and darting or rolling somewhere around his opponent to get at them from another angle.

So begins...

The golden fire-lights of the under-Citadel shun through the uneven glass of their cages, illuminating Mirova's face beneath her crinkled Meltsander hood. Sparks and firelight from the automated machines repairing the damaged machinery of the war, Taqa crystals glowing in their backs.

"That's how you win wars," Mirova whispered, glancing up at Musa who sat across from her in their cage. The senior woman smiled as her head bobbed with the wagon's movement. "No mercy."

Skullivan swallowed as he walked in front of the cage, it feeling like they were marching deeper and deeper into the heart of Aklar invention. Outside the Citadel the people of the clan struggled to keep their stomachs full and their huts operational from the war-time damage received, but inside the Citadel it was clear a stronghold of Aklar ingenuity still existed.

Skullivan rose an eyebrow hesitantly as their guide, Rowlen, dismissed Uluru's question about payment once again. He glanced to Xaverius, who marched beside him disguised in mercenary gear. "...The further down we're led... the less I like this situation," He whispered to the man.

Skullivan watched as the man, Rowlen, pointed to the lift to their side - separating them from the prisoners. With a hesitant sigh Skullivan began to walk away with his other teammates disguised as mercenaries, looking back at the cages they left behind. "I hope we don't regret this," He muttered under his breath, stepping onto the other lift. With a blast of air it began to rise, the cages disappearing out of view behind them....

"We managed to fight off and capture a few Meltsanders here and there but that was just after the disease took hold," Rowlen continued as the lift stopped on a pristine white floor, obviously finished compared to the rest of the citadel and the town in general. "A disease that the Meltsanders had spread onto us..." Rowlen glanced back at the 'bounty hunters behind him as he led them down a hallway, with various rooms along it's sides. Some seemed to simply house more of the automatons that were aiding in construction of the citadel while a peek through the windows of various sealed rooms allowed the grup to see various Aklarites operating various crystal machines to perform autopsies on the bodies of dead Aklarites who had been stricken with the crippling disease affecting their clan.

"We have dabbled here and there in the sciences, though our specialty lies in engineering and medicine. No matter what we attempt to uncover, we can find no cure for this disease. We don't know when or how it can infect people or whether it is even truly contagious or not...I have seen a countless amount of my people...die. I have seen many suffer. My own son..." he sighed deeply, before his composure regained. "I cannot rest until something is done about this virus," he stated determinedly. "Capturing the Meltsander leaders before they could spread more bloodlust and disease upon our clan, will aid us greatly in that endeavor," he stated, stopping as they reached a room with two sealed doors and small square monitor-shaped mechanism jutting out of the wall with the outline of a hand on it's screen.

"Hmm...hadn't seen one of those things since the University," Uluru commented as Rowlen placed his hand on the screen, a low thrum coming from the machine as the screen suddenly began to glow green and make a beeping noise as the two sealed doors before them began to open. Before them lied yet another machine, housed in the center of a large, clean room. A large sphere attached to a pillar of tangled wires and machinery that extended below the floor they were standing in and deep into the ground. Inside the sphere lay a large number of crystals. More than many of the travelers had seen gathered in one place, all glowing and convulsing with a green light.

"This, I believe is the crowning achievement of the Aklar," Rowlen nodded with certainty as he looked towards the others apologetically. "I hope I haven't bored you with the tales of our plight, but it's been so long since anyone could just stop and listen. It feels good to talk about it," he chuckled somberly before looking at the machine again. "With this we may not have a cure, but perhaps an even better solution."

"My son...It was the Meltsanders who infected my son. One of them in particular. Four years ago my son had continuous contact with her and then after a few months he began to show signs....signs of infection," Rowlen shook his head. "We Aklar have traditionally been a reclusive people...free of contact with the outside world. The Aklar always had walls so to speak..." he began to pace around the room, searching for something.

"Years ago we realized we need to venture out...to expand...and that's when we forst encountered the Aklar, who accused us of trying to breach their territory. They introduced us to war...to a taste of the world outside of our clan. And now, a few years after a truce had been established...they introduce us to disease..." Rowlen shook his head. "The Meltsander girl became...intimate with my son and through repeated contact with her he first began to show signs. A virus from the outside world."

"I wasn't certain at first, but then Meltsanders had come demanding explanations as to why we had ceased any and all trade with them as per the treaty. And soon after these negotiations, soon after those Meltsander Barbarians strolled into our streets, more infected emerged," Rowlen continued as he examined one of his dust fly drones left on a shelf to the left of the orb.

"War soon broke out one again....and needless to say we were more I'll equipped to wage it than we had ever been," Rowlen shook his head, looking to his machine once more. "This device...the Tecton-Sphere was built as a sort of last resort. Something to turn to should all hope for our people be lost. We, as a people need to expand, but with the Meltsanders at our heel that became difficult...but it soon became clear, to me, at least that they were not our obstacle. The Meltsanders were simply a part of the problem."

Rowlen glanced up towards a shelf, seemingly finding what he was looking for on it. He reached up, standing in the tips of his toes as he carefully drew down what looked to be one of many minature sets of the the sphere and it's placement in the desert along with two other shapes in the set. One an approximation of the Meltsander war camp...and the other a very accurate model of Dol-duna.

"The Dust Flies came in a couple days ago, reporting of altercations in Dol-Duna...visitors from a land not of the sands. Our machines meant to conduct trade with potential allies, quickly acted as spies for neighboring clans...and one thing became abundantly clear. War is the nature of the desert and disease is it's brother. It is strange to the Aklar, but it is no stranger to the Meltsanders. Or the Dol-Dunans, such ands the one they let into their fold. If the Aklar wish to grow, outcomes such as bloodshed and illness become inevitabilies rather than possibilities. And it is due to that inevitability that forces my hand, whether the council agrees with me or not..."

Rowlen clicked a button atop the minature sphere. "The Tecton-Sphere' 'roots' go deep underground. Eighty-nine crystals allowing it's processes to move with complete efficiency..." he spoke as the minature began to shake intensely. "With simple coordination from our dust flies we can accurately pinpoint the weak links within the earth beneath the locations our neighbors lie in, precisely two at a time, and deliver shockwaves to the faults below. In thirty minutes time..." he paused as a loud crack was heard as the minature Meltsand camp and Dol-Duna sunk beneath the sands as if being pulled in to a jagged sinkhole beneath the ground. "Their clans fall, broken and forgotten like the old world before us and with them their bloodlust and pestilence. Now more than ever, with the Meltsanders leaders captured and their people unaware...I can flush out the rest in one fell swoop."

"....Wipe them all out...just like that?" Uluru asked slowly, glaring in shock at the minature destruction he witnessed.

"Do you think me barbaric?" Rowlen asked. "Once the Meltsanders and Dol-duna's camps are no more we will give put warning to any other clans to evacuate and flee the Qafar. I would prefer it that way...but if they resist...In place my people above all others," he glared up at the group, his eyes empty of the passion he once had when discussing the plight of his own people.

"Well, this was a really weird adventure," Jake said, laughing as he left it all behind, never to be seen or heard from again.

Musa was teetering back and forth on what side to choose. Was Hanmar right in pursuing a dying people in order to put an end to a war? Were the actions of the Aklar justified by their fear and helplessness?

She didn't know. She found that all of it made her stomach turn and put a frown on her lips. Her eyes were a dark gold as she mulled over the information being fed to her. "I do not understand." She murmured.

"I do not understand." She called, sitting up straighter and holding the bars of her cell. "If you are in possession of such intelligence then why is it so cumbersome to find the real source of your plague? You have riches beyond that of many clans in these sands." Musa looked around the hall. "Why not purchase a being who could find the answers you seek?" Her gaze was now on one of her jailers whom had been either strolling down the length of the occupied cells or chatting with his clan mate. Her eyes pierced the darkness and their perception should give the man a feeling of uneasiness.

"Once the Meltsanders and Dol-duna's camps are no more we will give put warning to any other clans to evacuate and flee the Qafar."

Dustin's previously leisurely grip on his scimitar's hilt quickly turned into a vice as he held himself from drawing on Rowlen. He grit his teeth as his jaw flexed, the muscles visibly throbbing. That included the Atzerii. His people.

"I would prefer it that way...but if they resist...In place my people above all others."

He couldn't argue with that. Dustin held that same sentiment. But it was also that same sentiment that furthered his resolve to defeat this Rowlen and any other Aklar that would stand in his way. Rowlen needed to go, Rowlen and the object of his ideals.

"I think you desperate," the Kassellander responded, maintaining his cool and his adopted gruffer voice. "And I don't blame you. But I also wouldn't blame other clans of the Sea and Qafar for uniting to bring down a mutual enemy."

"WE ARE NOT DOCTORS!" Rowlen screamed, in contrast to his usual calm demeanor. "We are inventors! We build and build until we find solutions! We cannot find a cure to the disease that plagues us, we cannot find a way to stop the war that looms upon us, so I've built something to cut it off at the root!"

"So why tell us all this?" Uluru questioned, his hand edging towards his blade. "You know how insane this sounds, right?"

"Perhaps I thought to gain sympathy for our plight-," Rowlen began, shaking his head.

"Sympathy for your people perhaps, but you...this plan...it's insane," Uluru interrupted. "Send a message to Dol-duna. Ask for medical assitance for your clan, for medicine."

"No! Ask for aid from outsiders?! And bring more of their disease?! Their war..." Rowlen began to ramble. "There is...a secondary reason, however. I'm afraid, I was never to had much to pay you with. Outsiders...bring nothing but terror to our people. I've debated whether or not to let you go because you have aided us so. But you're insensitivity and lack of understanding only prove to further my theories on you outsiders."

The group would here a massive clang behind them as the slow, heavy, metallic footsteps of the robotic workers. They could smell the rust and smoke edging off their hides. "I do not intend to kill you, do not worry. But with the knowledge I have given you and your inability to understand, I cannot let you leave." He stated as the heavy lifting workers clicked their claws and the welding ones shot warning sparks from their flamethrower hands.

"You will be fed, cared for, observed, and studied by the Aklar's few medical experts...we hope through your the ample experimentation, we can discover a cure for our people," Rowlen frowned, as he turned, facing away from them with his hands behind his back as he glanced at his Tecton-Sphere. "I hope your survivability is stronger than that Meltsander girl's..."

"Shit," Uluru swore, wishing he had someone of his explosive crystals on him. He had lent some to the Meltsanders to aid them in escaping their sturdy glass cages, not anticipating the madness they would encounter once they met the leader of the Aklar. "My advice?" He began, shot ting a shocking blast at the machine, causing it to stumble back aways. Let's all concentrate on taking down one first, they're fairly slow."

"Sulfast...SULFURIOUS!" Sulfurious screamed, rattling in his glass cell.

Skullivan looked up as the lumbering clockwork machine approached, crystal's chugging throughout it's body as sand fell from it's shoulder's. He glanced to the other's in the team of mercenaries - Uluru, Xaverius, Dustin, Elise, Ka'Wa, and Sören. Warriors. Battle-hardened. Capable.

Unlike him.

Skullivan immediately ran for the door, leaving his comrades to fight the lumbering artifact of the old world and Aklar invention. "Coward," Sören hissed in an accented voice before reaching his hands forward, ice blasting out of his tattoos and smashing the machine's legs backwards, causing it to stumble back - shaking the ground as it did.

***

In the cell's below the ceiling shook, sand and dust coming down chaotically. Slathe leaned against the glass of his cage, glancing up at the ceiling of their chamber. "Something's happening up there," Slathe whispered, looking behind him. In his cell Sulfurious, Bohdana, and several Meltsand Warriors stood, weaponless but still lethal looking. In the glass cage across from them Hanmar, Mirova, Aisha, Musa, and Whisper sat in their cages. Jake and Thessir hadn't accompanied them.

Slathe stared over at his commander. "Alright," He nodded, before reaching into his armour. From his breast-pocket he pulled out a small, purple crystal, a sticky substance on the outer end. Slathe then took a knee, with his free hand igniting a match on the rocky ground. "Everyone stand back!" He called, pushing those in his cage against a wall as he ignited the crystal-explosive and threw it against the glass. The cage wall shattered, fragmented glass flying forward and shattering the glass of Hanmar's cage also.

Slathe stepped through the broken cages, into the hallway of their chamber. An Aklar guard at the end of the hallway, coughed in fear before collapsing dead - his spear falling weakly on the ground. "Right, that takes care of the guards," Slathe muttered, turning to the newly escaped prisoners. "Something's happening up there - I didn't trust that Aklar leader," Slathe hissed, his eyes looking over the assembled characters. "And I promised I'd protect you guys. So we have to figure out what we're going to do, fast."

As much as the Kassellander wanted to kill Rowlen on the spot, he didn't pose as much of a threat as the automatons presently. Dustin whirled around and dashed for the robot worker that had just fallen to Soren's ice. With a grunt of effort he quickly shoved his scimitar straight through the Taqa crystal in its back effectively shattering it and shutting down the machine.

"Bring them to the ground!" he called. "Then take out the crystal!"

With one autmaton taken down, Uluru turned his attention towards the remaining three. The two spitting fire from their hands were the most trouble as they had created an intense wall of flame. Uluru set out, raising his gauntlets to blast the exposed wiring of one of the fire-bots, electrocution it's systems, causing it's functions to cease cease as it came toppling down upon another robot sentry behind it.

Dustin was upon the felled automatons in seconds. Each crystal was stabbed with his scimitar resulting in the shattering of the energized Taqa and the subsequent shutdown of the metal behemoths. The Kassellander spun around to the remaining one as it turned on the masquerading bounty hunters with its flame throwing hands.

Dustin kited around the flames as the automaton struggled to pick a target out of the numerous standing before it and made his way over to its legs. A quick scan revealed how much of a patchwork the large lumbering robot really was. Metal was scarce, refined metal that is, especially in the Sea of Sands. There were missing plates here or there which easily exposed the network of wiring that ran through the legs of the automaton like sinews of muscle. Dustin drew one of his daggers and pressed down a small, flat crystal on the butt of its grip that ignited a bright orange glow in the translucent blade.

Finding his chance, the Atzerii dashed to the automaton's heels and stabbed the dagger into the exposed wires of one of the legs, causing a surge of energy within the robot's leg. As if its nonexistent nervous system was overloading, the leg went rigid before spasming. Well, spasming as much as robotic joints would allow. Regardless, the irregular movement caused the metal giant to topple, allowing Dustin a clean stab into its main power source crystal, ending the last of Rowlen's small defense.

Dustin let out a breath of effort having had to dodge flames and metal limbs from burning him alive and breaking his bones. Bright blue eyes looked at the smaller man accompanied with a bored expression. "Rowlen," he started, walking casually off the body of the disabled automaton and towards the weathered engineer. "Your plan will not work." His gruff "bounty hunter" voice was gone, replaced with his normally sophisticated and accented tone. "As soon as Dol-Duna is taken down, word will spread and the other clans will unite. Grand Yusil might even destroy the Aklar themselves, and it will not be at the fault of the Meltsanders. No... It will be at your fault."

Elise watched as the automatons fell one by one, thanks mostly to Uluru and Dustin. "He's right, Rowlen. You stand no chance!" she started, making her way to Dustin's side. She held her blades loosely, ready for whatever the engineer could throw at them. "I feel sorry for your people, they will die because of your arrogance, and your inability to swallow your pride and seek help from others!" She shook her head, "I've traveled the sands for years, and in my time I've found more people willing to help others than people who wish to bring harm." She stared at her boots, scraping her left foot on the ground nervously. "I had a run in with some Meltsanders, and they left me for dead with, but rather than someone simply putting me out of my misery, a kind family took me to Dol-Duna and paid for my medical care I could have never repaid them or their kindness." Her gaze met Rowlen's as she narrowed her eyes and raised her blade threateningly, "I will not allow you to hurt innocent people and bring war to the Qafar."

"My goal is to prevent war! To end strife before it reaches my people...but you can't possibly understand that, can you outsiders? How allowing the falsehoods of such concepts such as the kindness of outsiders influence us and allow the poison to seep in!" He cried as he edged towards his deadly machine."

Uluru pointed at Rowlen with his sword, "Shit, someone hurry. Before he flicks it on!" Uluru shouted, but due to their scuffle with the autamatons, they were far further from the machine then they wanted to be.

Rowlen pulled down a lever, utilizing all his strength in and the machine started to shake and hum, the crystals powering up with a crackling glow.

Dustin darted for the large orb machine as soon as Rowlen through the lever and began slashing at any and every wire he could find. Sparks seemed to spray out like hose from the ends of severed cables as he swung this way and thought, sure to slice anything important looking. He even began kicking at the smaller crystals that protruded from the orb as he made an absolute mess of the rag-tag machine the Aklar Clan's chief engineer had thrown together. He didn't know if any of it actually did, but it was the best thing they could do. Trying anything would be better than sitting there and watching as Dol-Duna and Meltsand crumbled to the earth.

Xaverius followed Dustin's lead, running up to the contraption and pulling out any wires he could, he also did his best to dislodge the crystals within the device. Sparks flew around, some hitting him and singeing his clothes and skin slightly, but he kept at it, he also pocketed some of the lesser components he pulled, hoping to also salvage what he could from the other robotics once events had died down.

Xaverius and Dustin seemed to have the destruction of the machine under control, at least, Elise hoped that they'd begun to destroy it in time. While the two cut and tore wires while smashing crystals she took the chance to grab a long length of frayed wire from one of the fallen automatons and raced to stop Rowlen as she tried to slip away in the confusion. "You really don't get it do you?" She quipped, throwing the wire over his head and shoulders and pulling him to the floor. "I understand life here got tough, but why'd you'd ever think this was the answer is beyond me." She shook her head as she knotted the wire around his middle and arms before going to work tying his feet and hands. "Maybe we're overstepping our bounds but I won't stand by and let you do this." She knelt down before him and flash him a sad smile, "I can tell you're hurting, and you don't know what to do about it but I can tell you that this," she gestured to the sparking remains of the machine he'd made, "is not the answer. This won't help your people get better, it won't bring a cure. All it is, is a death wish for Aklar, assisted suicide." She lowered her gaze, thinking about the Change, the possibility of which lead them to Aklar in the first place. "We, we may be able to help you Rowlen but you have to help us first."

"Meltsanders..? You're free, but how did-,?" Rowlen stammered in confusion, unable to move properly as Elise tied up his limbs in wire.

"Er..." Uluru began, looking at the Meltsanders who had begun pouring into the room. "You see, this was always a ploy. One that I'm not as reluctant to be a part of as I was earlier, but all the same...you've been deceived, Rowlen," Uluru stated, giving the madman a look of pity, but not exactly empathy.

"Also, your guard was stricken with foul pestilence and died!" Sulfurious added unhelpfully.

"No...no..." Rowlen began, violently attempting to struggle himself out of the wires. "I can't see it end like this. I can't see my people end like this," he sobbed. "Broken and riddled with disease! I own't let you take any more of my people away from me, HANMAR!" he screeched as he saw the Meltsander's leader, appear in the room with her people. "Not one more..."

"Funny that," The Meltsander Commander Hanmar growled as she entered the room, pushing past Slathe and the rest to make her way toward Rowlen, "Because it wasn't me or my daughter or the Meltsanders who killed your son..."

Hanmar stared Rowlen down, his sad, pitiful face only making the Commander shake her head. It had been so long ago after all, and while the woman hated his guts for everything he had done she couldn't help but soften slightly. Eventually she whispered, so close to his face that he could feel her breath, driving perhaps the worst truth of all into Rowlen's diseased brain, "It was you."

Bohdana swallowed as she watched the scene, almost dwarfed by the Meltsanders around her. The young girl looked up to them - yes, they were brutish and brash and perhaps a little barbaric - but they were survivors. They were desert people.

She slid silently through the crowd toward Uluru and the others, "Are you guys okay?"

Dustin put his hands on his knees as he breathed heavily and looked over from Hanmar and Rowlen to the teenager. "I am alright," he said, dropping his "bounty hunter" voice. "That felt really good to break those things. Therapeutic, event. We should break things more often."

"I can agree to that!" Xaverius gave Dustin a hearty pat on the back. "If everythin' here's clam I can go ahead and grab some gizmos from inside these machines. If I'm lucky I can find either somethin' useful or something we can use to buy some stuff, like food!" Xaverius took a look at the machine he and Dustin had just taken apart, looking for anything that stuck out.

Musa had stood with her back to Aisha, Mirova, and even Slathe and his men. Her skin was crawling and her fingers were twitching on her glass shaft. At every rumble, her eyes had quickly flickered over to watch sand spill from the ceiling above. She'd even bounced on her toes a little to show her discomfort and impatience. Our companions are in trouble and they want to appeal to these people? Give them a loose plan and gilded assumptions? She had frowned irritatedly. She did not dismiss the good of their actions but the Aklar people had gone this long being sick and dying. They could last another hour or two while the Questers assembled themselves and joined all of their minds to figure out the plan.

But finally Slathe was apparently feeling just as impatient as she, for he took the reins and sent the two women on their way. When they all began moving she quickly galloped beside him to their destination.

Now she was cautiously stepping around broken crystals and wires that wiggled and jumped with the electricity still cracking through them, like blood through veins. Her eyes were narrowed and her golden irises stood out in the shadow of the now destroyed room. After peeling her eyes away from the fallen masses of metal made to look like mishapen men, she tipped her head and eyed the construct that seemed to have been savagely destroyed. The thing unsettled her and made her look from a distance while flexing her hand on her glass pole. Whatever it was, she had a feeling that whatever it was doing and whoever destroyed it as vehemently as they did, had something to do with the rumbling in the halls. Glancing back at the metal men she figured the fight with them must not have been so quiet either. Then finally she went over to the gathered group "What happened here?" She asked after the stocky, bearded man waddled off the to contraption, his fingers twitching.

"Okay? Been better..." Uluru admitted, looking the mechanical rubble that lay before him. "I'm not sure you'll need an army to topple this regime..." he looked at the pathetic state of the Aklar's leader. "This clan was damaged from the inside put long before we got here...." Uluru nodded at the machine in ruins. "He said he had a mechanism...one that could spread earthquakes throughout the Qafar. He planned to target your camp and Dol-Duna."

"HOW DARE YOU, HANMAR!" Rowlen screeched, tears streaming down his face. "How dare you place that blame upon me. The blame of the disease your wretched girl spread! A disease we could fine no cure to! A waste in life and in death!"

Uluru glanced from Rowlen to Hanmar and began to step forward in case the Meltsander commander flew into a rage.

Dustin had finally caught his breath and made his way over to stand beside Musa. "Uluru speaks truth. Rowlen planned to topple the surrounding clans and the rest of Qafar through earthquakes produced by that machine," he nodded to where Xaverius stood. "Which Xaverius and I kindly dispatched."

The Kassellander couldn't help but marvel at Elise's bravery, her moral upstanding. Miles upon miles of sand between her and home. She didn't even know what her destination was. She simply just traveled, much like Xaverius, around the Qafar. How old was she? Sixteen, Dustin recalled. Somewhere around there. So young, he thought. Yet filled so much wisdom. The world could learn a thing or two from a girl of her stature.

"That was certainly some workout! Now, if you excuse me..." Xaverius then went around the various battered machines, opening them up and grabbing anything he thought would be of value. After collecting a good amount of loot, he returned to Dustin and the others. "So, now what do we do? I have a ton of robo parts and some ideas on what to spend them on." He was looking though his haul and estimating how much they were worth as he waited for a response from the group.
