"We should agree to this," Ka'Wa spoke up, squeezing her arms. "I already vouched for Slathe and some of you agreed we should work with him. Therefore, taking this jump won't be so bad."

She looked over at Slatheurian.

"He doesn't seem to have changed much after all."

Dustin scratched the back of his head rather irritably. "Whether we trust him entirely or not, we don't really have much of a choice. It's either his way or the non-existent-and-likely-deadly-highway."

Hanmar inhaled a breath of resentment, lowering her head down as she rocked on the balls of her feet. The sun burned their skin, tanning her muscular arms that seemed to clench the longer she kept silent. There was pain there, pain that she refused to show to anyone, but Jake was good at breaking that resolve to get a glimpse.

Eventually her words filled the blazing air between them, "They killed Syne," her eyes met his, glossy, "I'm sorry. I know you two were good friends."

Jake didn't say anything for a very long moment, but his eyes turned from their normal warm blue to something icy. Finally, he swallowed.

"I see," he said. "Yes, she was my friend." Turning, Jake stalked away, his hand subconsciously stroking his pistol.

"What next?" Slathe whispered, raising his eyebrow at Uluru. After a pause he pulled out a jagged, carved blade - slicing toward's Uluru's neck and coming to a sudden halt right next to his skin. "Next- you follow my lead," Slathe spoke. "Friend."

***

"Commander!" Slathe yelled, marching out into the camp - moving through the soldier's training under the burning midday sun. "Commander!" He yelled again, pushing Uluru forward ahead of him - the man's hands tied behind his back. The two approached a war-table, where Hanmar and several other Clan Meltsand oligarchs stood - Sulfurious among them. "Commander, this worm," Slathe spat, smashing his boot into the back of Uluru's leg and causing the man to collapse into the dirt.

"I found out more about them - they all gathered in Dol-Duna, like they said, but this one - before he went to Dol-Duna he worked some jobs in Clan Aklar, ain't that right?" Slathe began, kicking the already downed Uluru again. Slathe's eyes rose up to his superiors - particularly Hanmar among them. "He helped them fortify their defences. Apparently he's from the East, from somewhere he calls a University - makes him real smart..." Slathe smirked. "Smart enough to get us in."

Hanmar raised an eyebrow, "What's a University?"

"Some Toxic Sea shit," one of the Meltsander men replied, "Some clan who thinks they're smart."

"Ah," the Commander frowned, glaring down at Uluru.

"Yeah, what an asshole," another of the Meltsander men spat into the sand, "We should KILL HIM!"

"No, no. Slatheurian has a good point, we've been working on guerilla tactics, now is our bloody chance to use them and smash those Aklar roaches into the ground," Hanmar growled, her mood seemingly darkened from her conversation with Jake earlier, "But surely if he's from a smartass clan he would be smart enough to keep his mouth shut about working for Aklar..."

The Commanders eyes narrowed down to Uluru, though her words were for Slathe, "Good find, comrade, how'd you slip it from him?"

Slathe blinked at Hanmar, his eyes concealed by the shadow of his brow in the sun. "...I was honest," He admitted. "I told them I'd protect them. And I will. He doesn't want his friends to die, and after he gets us in he and the group will go free. I promised them." Slathe swallowed, as he looked back at the camp. "Otherwise Clan Meltsand isn't even as good as their word. And once Aklar falls we will need to be."

"I'll help you in any way I can," Uluru spoke. "But this won't be easy. I hope you know that," he asked, chancing a glance up at Hanmar.

There were shouts of protests around the war table, but Hanmar kept quiet, studying Slathe with an uncertain glower. One of the men went to smash his boot down in Uluru's face but the Commander quickly stopped that, tripping the man with a flick of her leg, "You'd hurt the man who says he can help us? Dumbass roach."

Protests turned to laughter. These weren't diplomatic people. They were warriors, fighters, engineers who had been too close to the flame, desert people who were hardened and conditioned to fight for survival. Suspicious people, men and women who had had their trust broken one too many times. Hanmar thought of her options.

"Don't think we're prepared for a siege just yet," she suddenly growled, glancing up at Slathe, though her words were promising - she was open to the idea. She looked down at Uluru, "What did you have in mind, exactly?"

"Well what have you tried before," Uluru asked. "I'll tell you what you did and make it actually work," he said with a wry smile.

Uluru walked back into the ten where the others had gathered after his "capture". "Well, we're in luck," Uluru began. "They're going to escort us to the Aklar Clan...provided I follow through with my stately for them to infiltrate said clan."

"Thank you for snooping on all of my conversations, Jakey," Hanmar jumped as the cowboy creepily appeared behind her, "But look, whatever Toxic Seamen are like it's no worse to the Aklar."

Beads of sweat planted themselves on her forehead as the midday sun heated up the camp around them. She glanced at him seriously, "That's why I wont let you go there, it's for your own safety and for theirs - " she gestured to Uluru and Slathe who had left, "As well. Unless we take the Clan they wont be safe, you wont be safe if you go with them. Aklar has changed since you last visited..."

Hanmar shook her head in frustration, glancing down at the war plans on the table, "We're running out of options, blowing up the walls hasn't worked so well. We need an insider. If Slathe says this professor is one, then I'm willing to listen."

Mirova casually threw sand in Uluru's eyes, instantly blinding him. "Well..." The wise woman sighed. "It's not like we have much choice without fighting have the camp..." She glanced at Boh. "The only thing I'm worried about... is our friend the Cowboy Ninja."

Uluru moved away away the blinded body of Sacko, who he had was accidentally caught in the crossfire as he stood up from vomiting, unwittingly becoming a human shield against the nomad's sandy assault. "You think so, eh?" Uluru began. "He seems to know these Meltsanders on a person-"

"I HATE SAND!" Sacko interrupted with a screech.

"...on a personal level," Uluru continued, glancing back at the Meltsander with annoyance. "This is out best chance..." Uluru reiterated.

Mirova let out a heavy sigh as a Meltsander fell out their tent and crawled away in the night, where the sounds of the drunken soldiers feasting and getting ready for the cold, long stretch until dawn. "Okay..." Mirova sighed, turning away - brushing up against Ka'Wa as she did. "You best make sure your boy Slathe doesn't screw us," She hissed in Ka'Wa's ear before moving on toward her bed.

Skullivan swallowed. "I think it's a good plan," He spoke up with a small smile to Uluru.

"The quicker we're out of here, the better," Elise remarked. She wasn't a fan of helping Clan Meltsand get into Aklar and possibly starting a war before the seekers of The Change could find someone to translate the text on the Idol, but what choice did they have at this point? The sea was a terrible place, she knew that but never before did she have to truly accept it. It was a game of survival, and in order to survive and get away from the thoughts plaguing her mind and the fear of being killed by Clan Meltsand, she had to accept that Aklar was a possible and necessary sacrifice. Of course, it didn't sit well with her, the girl who left her cushy noble lifestyle at 18 to pursue a dream of traveling and meeting new and exciting people. Her dream had become a nightmare once before and that dream was quickly turning into one again. She could only hope that this nightmare would end soon. However, the gnawing in the pit of her stomach told her that any and all hope for her dream to return to normal was foolish. Life would never be the same again after they began their journey to Aklar, and part of her was okay with that. After all, how could they ever hope to find The Change, if they themselves weren't willing to embrace change and the curveballs the desert threw at them. No, she was a survivor, and in that moment where everyone else was turning Uluru's plan over in their heads, she made the conscious decision to never be a victim of paralyzing fear again.

"I agree, Skullivan, it is a good plan. When do we leave?"

"Thank you, you two," Uluru nodded to both Elise and Skullivan. "We move in the dead of night, when the stars shine barely enough light to guide us on our way," he continued, looking at everyone present. "I'm going to be honest here, this plan won't work unless we all are together on this. This is our only way to to leave the town...and find cintinue finding lead on the change. So no more squabbling, no more stalling. On this...we work together."

"So, you're saying you've not seen Ms. Seaver in a few days?" The tall, hooded man asked the young Dol-Dunian guard.

"That's c-correct s-sir," Valik stammered. Ever since the Wetlanders had invaded the city, everyone was on edge. While there hadn't been any fighting between the Guards of Dol-Duna and the Wetlanders, tensions were high, and now this strange man asking questions about a specific, not Wetlander, worried the young man greatly. "I told Elise that morning that she should enjoy the festival, and she told me about her desire to travel -"

"And you encouraged her travel, didn't you?" The man asked, folding his arms across his chest as he leaned in uncomfortably close to Valik's face. "Yes, I told her if she felt like she wanted a change, she should go...She's my friend, I wasn't going to tell her that her dream was stupid. I mean, she'd traveled for the last eight or so years from what she told me." The man rubbed his face and shook his head, "Her traveling is the issue here, son. That girl is more important than you realize, and having her just wandering the desert is worrisome for a lot of important people." He stared Valik down, realizing the young man was no longer useful to him, "Never mind, don't worry yourself any longer with this. Good day."

"I don't-" Aisha raised her hand to voice her opinion, but then she paused to look at Skullivan doubtfully. She pledged her loyalty to him, granting him leadership of the group, at least in her mind. Still, Aisha thought of herself as a negotiator of peace, not an instigator of war. Aisha tried to determine which of the two was more important to her, but, realized that the correct question to ask herself was what she should do, not what her opinion was. Resignedly, she said, "I will follow your command, I just-... What do you need of me?" Aisha gripped the chakrams around her neck anxiously, resting her hand over her healing shoulder.

Ka'Wa frowned, uncertain about what to do. Aisha, Jake, and Elise had already agreed to the endeavor. Despite Bohdana promising to get her home, Ka'Wa wanted to agree as well. She knew her mother was worried about her, probably thinking she was dead, and the woman wanted to find some way to at least reassure her mother. The knight had no intention of returning to Dol Duna, not yet. Despite her remark to Slatheurian, she did have to admit he changed. Ka'Wa wanted to change too.

"I-I'll also join," Ka'Wa spoke up, hands balled up into fists at her sides. "I need to find a way to send a message, but, I want to help too."
