Introduction

It has been many years since the great war ended. Having seen many years of peace and prosperity has given everyone a sense of hope and security. Were bitter battles were once aged now hold festivals between old enemies. One look at the world and one would say it is a utopia, with the exception of a few pirates, raiders and other outlaws. Many of the lesser kingdoms have disbanded their armies in favor of guards and have instead turned their focus on luxuries and the little things in life.

That is until the largest raid managed to kill King Xavier Shaw, King of Vecar. Who is survived by his widowed wife, now Queen regent, Queen Johanna and their daughter, the new Queen. Their neighboring Kingdom of Kuthen, shortly after Xavier's death, started to aggressively talk about lending aid to Vecar, till the queen is really ready to lead. As these talks happen more and more raids happen across the Vecaren lands. In a hope to end the raids and to stand against Kuthen, the Queen travels to the capital of the nearby kingdom of Commora. Were she will marry the prince, per an arranged marriage. But what secret and dangers await her, for not all is as it seems.

Our Story starts with Queen Gwen Devereaux on her way to the capital of Commora.

Kingdom of Vecar:
The lands here are some of the roughest yet beautiful. The wilds are home to plenty of game, the best wild game, for those who are brave enough to face harsh weather and terrain along with the most dangerous predators. The people who thrive in these harsh conditions are the hardiest, one a tribal people now stand united. They relied on more gurilla style combat, using their knowlage of nature to out smart their enemy. They have a standing army, but their focus is on their Spec Ops. Due to their tribal roots, family, loyalty and duty are the three most important parts of their society.

King Xavier took the throne near the end of the last great war when his father, due to injuries and age, stepped down. Within his first year he married Johanna and within months they gave birth to a daughter. Two years later the war ended with the treaty being signed in the Great Hall in Commora. One year ago well visiting a village a large group of raiders attacked. The kings guard held fast as their escape route was quickly cut off. They were holding well and about to make a push when the villagers, who turned out to be raiders that sacked the village two days ago, attacked. This caught the guards by surprise, giving the attackers just enough of an opening to kill the king before the guards could react.

Kingdom of Kuthen:
Kuthen is a kingdom of plains, with a few scattered hills. Fair amount of game, but the people here focus more on the large farms that span the great open plains. Were Vecar focus on Spec Ops the Armies of Kuthen focus on a more conventional arm with their strength resting with their cavalry that dominates the vast open kingdom. Besides the plains, the biggest draw to Kuthen are the gardens, massive gardens tended to by master gardeners. As they are a militaristic people, honor, courage, commitment and duty are key to the Kuthen people.

King Ivan Holt rules with an iron fist as did his fathers before him. It was Ivan's father who started the war against the Vecaren. His father died a few days after the treaty was signed. Now Ivan has is trying aid the Vecaren and their fight against the raiders, who they say have also attacked them. He also says that they have pushed the raiders out of their lands and would be happy to do the same in Vecar... for a price.

Kingdom of Commora:
Commora is probably the single most naturally beautiful kingdom, white sandy beaches with crystal clear waters. Gently rolling hill and the river lands, a place with many water ways, ranging from mountin runoffs to massive rivers. The river lands and the rolling hills are spotted with farms and more importantly... wineries, Commora has the best wines. Not a big of a military power as Kuthen but still has a very strong army that instead of cavalry, swordsmen or Spec Ops, focuses on archery. The people of Commora are known as the "Host Kingdom", Hospitality, family, honor make them the greatest host, from the poorest peasant to the royal family.

The former king of Commora managed to keep his people mostly neutral in the last war, thou some battles did take place on their land. They treated an injured the found and hosted the peace talks that ended with the signing of the treaty.

Zxander relaxed as he watched how Gwen handled the young prince. If it was ok with her and he posed no threat then it was ok with him. He turned to bow to Gwen after the king left but was pulled away by Masha. Having gotten use to her personality, and knowing he had to leave the queen anyway, he offered no resistance. As he was lead away he only wished he had, had the chance to signal the queen before being dragged away.

When the two of them we're young they came up with their own language, at a distance it sounded like random noise. Up-close it was gibberish, but to them they could say anything without worrying about anything. As time pasted they also developed their own code, everything from subtle changes in body language, to how they spoke to the way they phrased things, to different symbols. The one big rule was never to share either their language or code with ANYONE. The late king, may he rest in peace, and the queen are aware of the language and know that the two tend to do or say things a little different from time to time but have not been able to crack the code or decipher the language.

He wanted to let her know that no matter what he would always have an eye on her. But between being dragged away and the crown prince bringing her to a garden maze, that seemed alittle impossible. This got him thinking as he turned to follow the ladies, removing Masha's arm from his. Back home he knew every inch of the capital, every passageway, including the hidden ones, he had paced them so many times he knew the count by heart. Here he was on unknown forging soil. After setting up, he would have to explore the keep, and map out this garden maze, it could be a tactical advantage should anything happen. He was also starting to get the feeling people were getting the wrong idea about him. Gwen is his queen, yes and it is his duty to protect her yes, but to Zxander, Gwen is the last of his family, and possible the love of his life... and the thought of anything happening to her kills him. Back home, he would have been following behind the ladies, close enough that he could act but far enough to give her room. Of course back in Vecar, even before the kings death the people had embraced Gwen, she was greatly loved by her people, from the lowest peasant to the highest noble. Here Zxander knows nothing of the people, and they have yet to embrace her. Yes its true she was safe from the royals till after the wedding and until she gave them a heir, but what of the people, what of the nobles, and what of the other quest of court?

At this time Zxander looked over to Wymond who also had turned around, but he placed Ellyn's hand back on his arm and had given her a small smile. This gave Zxander an idea, "Wymond, I want you and the men to be crow. Ratimir will take two and be hound. Once everyone is together, have them join crow. You can become boar, or stay as crow, if any of the ladies want your attention." He gives a small nod towards Ellyn. "I will be eagle once we are done setting up." He didn't mind if Wymond, or any of his four, wanted to be friendly with any of the ladies, personally he saw Ellyn as an older sister, it was Julia who caught his attention. Her need for order, and safety, her commitment to family and rules. But most of all, it was her contrast to him, her push for peace and non violence compared to his life of nothing but violence and war. As for Masha, he was still unsure about her, he almost wanted to try to make her a guard but know that could never happen.

Wymond looked at Ellyn, "My lady, how has your trip been? If there is anything I can do for you, please do not hesitate to ask."

Zxander bows to the ladies, "Please excuse me ladies, I must tend to my men. I will meet you later. Wymond will look after you till then." He stands and heads off to find Ratimir and the rest of his men who are still guarding the main room. Once there he relays the same message he told to Wymond. Ratimir takes two men and heads in to the city as Zxander grabs the remaining men and heads towards were everyones quarters are.

Gwen smiled at the king, relieved that her request to spend time with Prince Klaus hadn't upset or offended him. She took a deep breath, trying to shake off her nerves. Once the king left, she glanced over her shoulder at Zxander and her guards, hoping they'd give her and the prince some privacy. Though she knew Zxander wouldn't really be too happy having to leave her alone, he was always over protective of her, but she didn't feel any threat from the prince or his family and even if there were, she was sure she could handle herself well enough. When Masha and Ellyn stepped up, leading the guards away, she smiled at them, giving a gracious nod before turning her attention back to the two princes who were still before her.

As she tuned back in, Danny was chatting away. She gave him a kind smile as Klaus offered her his arm. "It was really nice meeting you, Danny. I certainly hope we can get more acquainted later." She said to the young prince, hoping he'd get the hint without getting offended. When Klaus mentioned the gardens, her face lit up, looking forward to getting some fresh air. "That sounds wonderful." She said as they started to head toward the gardens. "So, Klaus, tell me a little about you." She said giving a small smile, hoping to find something they may have in common.

Klaus was pleased that Gwen took his arm and seemed to be interested in going to the garden. It was after all one of his favorite place. He was slightly disappointed when she asked him to tell her some things about him, he'd much rather talk about her than himself. "Well I was much preferring to talk about you. However I don't mind starting first." He gave her a small smile, staring into her eyes. She was stunning, and Klaus was having a hard time keeping his eyes off of her beautiful face. He thought for a moment about himself, wondering where he could start. "Well I adore horseback riding and adventuring out of my castle. It's hard to keep me locked up in a castle for more than a day. I enjoy fighting like a soldier would, I prefer in protecting myself rather than having guards." He shrugged taking another pause to think. "I like to paint, learn musical instruments. Right now I know the piano and violin. Oh, and I hate to brag, however I'm an excellent shower singer." He joked to Gwen.

Klaus entered the maze with his hand on his arm just beside hers, intertwined in the maze walls were roses of all colors. "Would you be so kind to tell me about yourself?"

Crows, hounds, boars - whenever Zxander talked like that she felt the urge to throw something at him, it reminded her too much of the occasions her brother had felt like boasting about the code the hunters used. Talln thankfully had stopped when she had been able to decipher it (he really should have kept his mouth shut instead of endlessly going on about it), but she hadn't been able to hear enough of Zxander's commands to put them into context. Ellyn was aware his codes served their purpose, nevertheless, they simply annoyed her. It was a good thing the vases looked really expensive and heavy. Also the shards would have been unpleasant.
And, of course, there he went, winding out of their presence to become an eagle - whatever that was supposed to mean. She watched leave, shaking her head at the over enthusiastic guard captain. Could she really begrudge him for trying to guarantee everyone's safety? No, not really.
She worried for him, sometimes. Had he ever given himself the time to grieve the death of his sister? Although, it was likely that he and their queen had supported each other during their time of loss.
Later, in a quiet moment, she would pray for them and thank the gods for protecting her own family.

Torn from her musings, she met Wymond's gaze with her own.“Calm. Thank you for watching over us, Wymond. Your continued service to her Grace is all I could ever ask for.” She gave him an uncertain smile, letting the hand that had rested on his arm fall back into her lap, her fingers interlacing. “If you have something to do, don't let us hold you back. I am certain we are safe here, and should some problem arise, I'm confident the duchess can dispatch of it.” It was clear from her tone of voice that she did not consider that event even remotely likely. The Comorrans were famed for their hospitality, killing their guests would only stain their reputation.
She turned to face Masha, an excitable grin on her lips. “Let’s take a look at our accommodations? And maybe the stables, if we have the time?” Ellyn tried to hide some of her enthusiasm about the prospect, failing and flustering despite herself.

Gwen returned Klaus's smile, when he said he was 'much preferring to talk about her', but was happy that he was willing to go first. As he talked, her smile grew, finding that they did in fact have quite a bit in common. Of course this wedding would happen whether they were compatible or not, her country needed it, but the fact that they may actually be able to get along, it made her feel much more at ease. "I feel like you just described me." She said with a small giggle, glancing around the garden as they entered the maze. "I love horses, getting away from the castle whenever I can." She said with a smile. "And believe it or not, I'm actually pretty good with a sword. My father wasn't too happy when I first mentioned wanting to learn swordsmanship, but he eventually gave in. I like to believe I can hold my own with any man. I could probably even best you." She teased slightly.

Gwen let go of Klaus's arm and walked over to one of the walls of the maze, reaching out to touch one of the red roses. "These are beautiful." She said, leaning in to smell it before turning back to Klaus. "It's beautiful out here." She said, glancing around. "I could get lost out here and I wouldn't mind it."

Klaus's smile only grew as Gwen told him that he basically described herself. He looked away for a moment and then looked back at her as he kept leading her to the center of the maze. "Good with a sword huh? I might just have to see that first hand." He joked with her as he put his hand gently on hers, locking his fingers with her, leading her up a small bridge. The two weren't quite in the center, only a few more turns however. Below them fish swam in the small pond. Flowers grew above them, tickling Klaus's forehead. He smiled at her, watching her as she looked around. The sunlight hit her eyes so perfectly, Klaus literally felt his heart break in that very moment by her beauty. She spoke of beauty, and the words just kind of spilled out of his mouth. "Your the most beautiful image out here.." He turned pink as he realized what he said and looked away coughing. "So anyways.. I wanted to ask you, is there anyone that I'm taking the place of? Will this marriage cause any conflict?" He stratched his head as he spoke to her. "I don't mean to be rude at all. I just would like to know where we stand, if there's no chance of you ever falling in love with me becuase of another man I'd like to be aware. Maybe we could just come up with another agreement for peace.." He felt broken hearted just letting the words leave his mouth. "Don't get me wrong, I can see myself falling madly in love with you.. You know what. Nevermine, I didn't say anything. This must all seem really stupid.." Klaus made a mental note to pound his head in a brick wall later.

The sunlight hit Katarina's back perfectly, warming her instantly as she sat on a stool by the window, looking down into the maze of the garden. Watching her son and the Queen walk together. She hoped deep inside that the two had similarities. Hopefully Gwen would learn to be patient with him, that's all she really wished for her son. However the thought of him ruling a kingdom did scare her just a tiny bit. As she thought of that, she turned away from the window and realized the butler had been talking to her the whole time. She smiled at him, and agreed potability however soon regretted it when she realized he was just testing her to see if she was still listening. "Ma'am, Klaus will do just fine. You shouldn't worry, it will cause wrinkles." He smiled at Katarina before picking up a folder that was on her desk and handed it to her. Katarina took the folder and looked through it. "Yes your right Charles. I apologize. Please leave me while I go over the plans for the next few days. I'll get the letters written as soon as possible." Katarina told him as she moved back to her desk.

As he has the ladies in sight a young Commoran guard runs up to Zxander, almost out of breath, "Sir, problem... two men... yours... found hurt... put under guard for their safety.. guards dead and yours missing. Dalibor... and Bogdan... I believe."

Zxander paused as his mind ran through a hundred different questions and scenarios. "Guard follow us as soon as I am done with my men I want you to show me everything. MEN Double time." The men hurry behind Zxnader as he runs up to Wymond. "We got situation. I want you to stay with Lady Ellyn, send a guard with Lady Julia and one to watch Duchess Masha's back. Two guards at either end of the hall, consolidate the ladies into one room for now and post two guards at each door full lock. Once the others get back send them to the Queen. Ladies take care and have fun." With that he nods to the Commoran guard who shows him to were they were holding the men. Well Zxander leaves Wymond and the others setup as they were ordered. As this is happening a guard arrive to tell the King and Queen about what happened.

Also at the same time Dalibor, his arms and side covered in blood, makes his way into the clearing at the heart of the maze were the Queen and Prince are. Clearly in a lot of pain, which the royal guard is trained to endure and NEVER show. "My Queen, please do not yell or come near me, I have failed you. But before I leave, I wanted to know... How well do you know the man that guards you? Do you know he has yet to morn the losses he has suffiered? Do you know what he did after each attack when he said he must leave to morn or to tend to something? Do you know why the old captain stepped down and gave it to Zxander, one of the youngest newest official guard over everyone? Do you know how far he will go to see you safe and why? Unfortunately your Grace, because of what I know and because I have failed you I must leave. Long live Vecar, Long live the Queen. With that he hurried as fast as he could away, which is surprisingly fast for the pain he is in.
