Our story takes place in the pre-industrial fantasy world of the “Seven Satrapies”, a grouping of seven semi-autonomous countries surrounded by ocean, each ruled by a head Satrap that act as surrogates to an overall ruler known as the Prism. In this world, technology is slightly more advanced, with use of gunpowder weapons and simply machinery, such as pulley systems, widespread throughout each Satrapy. Along with the presence of various fantasy creatures, a system of magic is present and quite prominent, with many systems based off of it, including the government. This type of magic is referred to as, “Chromaturgy”. It is the act of harnessing light and creating substances from it, known as luxin. Luxin takes different properties based on what shade from the light spectrum it is created from, ranging from flammable liquids to sturdy solids.

The central government is located in the main city of Chromeria, which also is the seat of education. A ruling council consists of ten colours, or representatives, from each satrapy. Satrapies have considerable independence, but are loosely ruled under a federalist central government. The council meets every month, or in case of emergencies, to discuss with other leaders. The Prism is the main leader. A Prism's abilities, ceremonial authority, status and Chromeria-sponsored protection allow him a great deal of personal agency; however, he has the least official governing power in peace time. A Prism is able to wield every colour on the spectrum, however he is replaced every 7th, 14th, or 21st year based on when he begins to die (or start to “lose the colours”).

When a candle burns, a physical substance (wax) is transformed into light. Chromaturgy in this world is the inverse: A drafter transforms light into a physical substance (luxin). Each different color of luxin has its own strength, weight, and even smell: blue luxin is hard, red is gooey, yellow is liquid, etc. But even as drafters change the world, the luxin changes them too, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Using Luxin changes your mood. Each color has a mood or mindset associated with it, and drafters (users) of that color tend to act accordingly. Bichromes and polychromes are especially tempted to use Luxin to alter their moods, and that is discouraged, given that Luxin use shortens your life span. Each color has a vice and virtue corresponding to the emotional change.

Most drafters (users) can only draft one colour, and are called "monochromes". Those who can draft more than one (a rare occurrence) are called "bichromes" (in case of drafting two) or "polychromes" (two or more). The colours are determined by how close on the spectrum they are to each other. For example, if you could usually draft yellow, a bichrome would be able to draft a colour next to that on the spectrum, either orange or green. A polychrome could draft both of those, or yellow, green, blue, or any other order on the spectrum. It is very rare that somebody could draft, say, red and blue, since they aren’t beside each other on the spectrum. A drafter must be able to see their colour in order to draft it. If you are a green drafter and are looking at grass, you can draft green; however you could not do the same in a completely white room with no colour. Because of this trait, most drafters have a pair of spectacles with lenses that are of their colour so they can draft whenever they want.

Luxin has weight. If someone drafts a luxin block over her head, the first thing it’s going to do is crush her. From heaviest to lightest are: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, sub-red*, super violet. For reference, liquid yellow luxin is only slightly lighter than the same volume of water.

*Sub-red is difficult to weigh accurately due to its rapid degeneration to fire when exposed to air. The ordering above was achieved by drafting it into an air-tight container and weighing the result, minus the weight of the container.

Drafting luxin feels good. Sensations of euphoria and invincibility are strong amongst young drafters, and those drafting for the first time. The effect is similar to drinking alcohol in terms of the good feeling associated with it. Strangely enough, some drafters seem to have allergic reactions to drafting. Generally, these affect pass with time.

Using Luxin does have a downside. As a Drafter uses Luxin, a ring of their colour appears in their iris. If that ring every extends past the iris -- dubbed "Breaking the Halo" -- that Drafter will slowly go insane, driven to use Luxin to better themselves in unnatural ways. Most "Wights" (people who have broken the halo) try to recreate their bodies out of Luxin, with little success. The process usually kills them, but not before they kill others first. Colour Wights are an abomination, and are put down like rabid animals if they can be found.

A subchromat is someone who has difficulty differentiating between at least two colours. In other words, someone who is colour-blind. However, this doesn’t always doom a drafter. For example, drafting blue when you cannot tell the difference between green and red will not handicap you. Superchromacy is the ability to distinguish between very fine variations of colour. This results in more stable drafting, leading to more ideal luxin outcomes, however this is most useful for yellow drafters. ONLY superchromat yellow drafters can draft solid yellow, and as a result, create the sturdiest structures available.

Every drafter, like every woman, has her own innate personality. The colour she drafts then influences her toward the behaviours each colour represents. A person who is already impulsive who drafts red for years is going to be more likely to be pushed farther into ‘red’ characteristics than someone who is usually orderly, but drafts red for the same amount of time. A colour isn’t a substitute for a woman. Be careful in your application of generalities. That said, generalities can be useful: a group of green drafters is more likely to be wild and rowdy than a group of blues. Given these generalities, there is also a virtue and vice* commonly associated with each colour.

*Virtue being understood by the early scholars NOT as being free of temptation to do evil in a particular way, but as conquering one’s own predilection toward that kind of evil. Thus, gluttony is paired with temperance, greed with charity, etc.

T A C T I L I T Y Difficult to describe due to flammability, but often described as a hot wind.

Sub-Red, or Firecrystal, is a volatile substance that will burst into flame upon contact with air. The solid form only exists in airless environments, or when Held. Those who can draft Sub-Red need a reliable heat-source to draft, and need to consciously dilate their eyes in order to see the Sub-Red to draft from. Since they are able to see heat emanating from life forms, they can somewhat see in the dark. Those who draft Sub-Red are passionate in all ways, the most purely emotional of all drafters. They are lustful, easy to anger, and loving.

T A C T I L I T Y Red Luxin has two variants that both feel and act differently. One on end, Red can be gooey, clingy, and sticky, like jelly. On the other end of the spectrum, it can be more like tar: thick and heavy.

Red Luxin comes in two forms. Pyre Jelly, and Burnglue. Pyre Jelly is the the lighter variant, and can be ignited with just a spark. Burnglue is heavier, but not as flammable as the other. Red Luxin is used most often in warfare. When Held, it can be launched at high speeds or entrap people. An impact with Red Luxin will cause it to explode almost immediately. Those who draft red are quick-tempered, lusty, and love destruction. They are can also be warm, inspiring, brash, larger than life, expansive, jovial, and powerful.

T A C T I L I T Y Lubricative, slippery, oily, soapy.

Orange Luxin, or Noranjell, is an extremely lucrative luxin, often used in machinery. It can be placed to put out fires, since it is entirely inflammable. Those who draft Orange are often artists, brilliant in understanding other people’s emotions and motivations. Some use this to defy or exceed expectations, being charismatic, emphatic, and sensitive. Others use these abilities to become master manipulators. Due to their natural empathy and attunement to emotion, they are capable of creating hexes or altering others emotions.

T A C T I L I T Y In its liquid, more common state, like bubbly, effervescent water, cool to the touch, possibly a bit thicker than seawater. In a rarer solid state, it is smooth and perfectly slicked, incredibly sturdy and hard.

Yellow Luxin, or Brightwater, is incredibly unstable, and can only be drafted in a solid form by Superchromats. In its liquid form, many drafters use it for incendiaries and explosives due to how quickly it bleeds back into light. Superchromat yellows are the best builders in Chromeria, while regular Yellows have trouble finding use for their Luxin. Those who draft yellow tend to be clear thinkers, with intellect and emotion in perfect balance. They are cheerful, wise, bright, balanced, watchful, impassive, observant, brutally honest at times, and excellent liars.

T A C T I L I T Y Rough, depending on the skill and purposes of the drafter, ranges from merely having a grain like leather to feeling like tree bark. It is flexible, springy, often drawing comparisons to the green limbs of living trees.

Green Luxin, or Godswood, can be used in a multitude of ways. In construction, it is used to allow buildings to "give" or sway a bit in the wind. It is fantastic as battle armour due to its hardness and flexibility. Superchromats of Green can produce luxin that varies in rigidity, creating Green luxin that is closer to the hard Blue, or Green luxin that is closer to the soft Red. Those who draft Green are often wild and free, flexible, adaptable, nurturing, and friendly. They don’t so much disrespect authority as not even recognize it. They are employed in a variety of fields, from construction to Luxin-smithing.

V I C E Envy

V I R T U E Kindness

T A C T I L I T Y Smooth, although poorly drafted blue will have a texture or can shed fragments easily, like chalk, but in crystals.

Blue Luxin, or Frostglass, is a brittle substance. When drafted well is smooth and can be very sharp, making for excellent weaponry or projectiles. Even when poorly drafted it is a more than suitable armament, although it will have a tendency to flake apart, leaving chalky residue all around. Drafting blues leads to orderliness and rationality. They are often calm, but cold at the same time. Structure, rules, and hierarchy are important to them. Blue are often mathematicians and composers. Ideas and ideology and correctness often matter more than people.

V I C E Pride

V I R T U E Humility

T A C T I L I T Y Like spidersilk or cobwebs, thin and light to the point of imperceptibility. It can also be drafted in solids as well, thin and sharp like a needle.

Superviolet Luxin, or Spidersilk, is invisible to those who do not draft Superviolet. Superviolet Light can be seen in any environment, as long as the sunlight is visible. Superviolet is often used for machinery, cryptography, slight-of-hand, and for hidden controls due to its invisibility. They are often employed as spymasters or cryptographers. Those who draft Superviolet tend to have a removed outlook; dispassionate, they appreciate irony and sarcasm and word games and are often cold, viewing people as puzzles to be solved or ciphers to be cracked. Irrationality outrages Superviolets.
