    Nightmares by Clipse

"There's something in the room, it's lurking in the shadow
staring through the darkness, man, I don't know

These four walls are closing in, these voices ain't my friend
They're haunting me, those, those memories."
    Smile by Eyedea and Abilities

"I can only build if I tear the walls down,
even if it breaks me I won't let it make me frown.

I'm falling but no matter how hard I hit the ground,
    I'll still smile."

[ Full Name ]
Durante Vincent Carlevaro

[ Nicknames ]
Dante || Contrary to popular belief, Dante is not his name, as it was not his ancestor, Dante Alighieri's, author of Inferno.

That Tattooed Guy || There've been some variations over the years, from "The Wizard With Some Serious Ink" to "Tats." In their defence, he doesn't ordinarily introduce himself, not that Dante Carlevaro needs much of an introduction.

Bloodsucker || Being only quarter-Vampire, he doesn't actually need blood, but he's been called worse by Wizards prejudiced against non-humans.

Bastard Prince || His grandfather and all firstborn sons before him belonging to the Carlevaro line have been Lords of the Vampire realm. The House was known for its purity, until Vincente Carlevaro fell in love with a Pureblood Witch. Coupled with an unknown father, Dante has come to be known as the Bastard Prince within the Vampire community.

The Skinner || A name he would sooner forget, it was one which eluded to the mangled bodies of his past victims. Although mangled might be too gentle of an verb.

Cursed, Host || That was what he had been in the time when the greatest Legilimen of their time possessed his body with the aid of a powerful Imperius Curse.

[ Gender ]
Male

[ Age ]
25

[ Sexual Orientation ]
Heterosexual

[ Blood Status ]
Part-Vampire, Part-Human

[ Boggart ]
Himself, Possessed || He fears succumbing again to the Imperius Curse and the Unmentionables' Master Legilimency. Although in honour of those who perished, he wishes to regain his memories, he fears it just as much.

[ Familiar ]
Puddle || A black pug he rescued five years ago shortly after he broke the Curse. He found her splashing in a puddle and took her home. Puddle is blind is one eye and doesn't make for a very good messenger, but Dante loves her all the same.

[ Occupation ]
Duellist || Trains Resistance members and teams

[ Classification ]
The Skinner of The Unmentionables || Trainer of The Resistance

[ Wand ]
13" Aspen wood, Dragon heartstring core, unyielding || Ironic, perhaps, that one possessed by a Legilimen for a period of two years would also possess a wand made of a wood that was said to attract duellists and strong-minded Occlumens. Aspen coupled with Dragon heartstring makes for a potent combative wand.

[ Strengths ]
Dante thrives in all forms of Martial Magic, that is, combatitive spells used in wizarding duels, including DADA. He is an extremely fast spell-caster as he is able to execute non-verbal spells. Although nowhere near as extraordinary as a half-breed or pureblooded Vampire, Dante does possess some enhanced senses and a quick reflex. His obsession with gyms and muggle warfare has made him a formidable martial artist, skilled in numerous combative techniques. Although he scarcely uses his fangs, they contain a potent sedative which has various effects on different species and individuals, numbing some and pleasuring others.

[ Weaknesses ]
Apart from his strength in duels, Dante can do little else. Dozens of skipped classes - especially in the early years after his mother's death - has resulted in a gaping hole in his understanding of the most basic spells, including those necessary to create light. He could not tell you what Divination was, much less how to do it, and Charms are out of the question, as they serve no purpose in duels. He's not the best Potioneer. Though some Duellists employ it, he's always considered it to be cheating. The potency of his Vampiric venom has an inverse relationship with his target's size, and rarely works on giants.

[ Distinguishing Features ]
At 6'3" with full body tattoos and a generous number of piercings, Dante Carlevaro is an intimidating man to behold. On his left ear, he has a stretched lobe, helix, and a tragus piercing. On his right, he has the same tragus stud, helix and root piercing. Dante also brandishes a nose ring.

What began as a way of taking control of his own body, his tattoos began to narrate the story of every loved one he's lost, and the people he has killed. He does not yet remember all of them, but the memories from his time possessed have gradually returned over the past 5 years and continue to. His first tattoo were the eyes of Lily Potter, the last person he'd killed before breaking the Imperius Curse. They remind him never again to succumb to the manipulation of darkness, and the lilies woven through her gaze, tinged with sharp thorns, are an honour to her unnerving resistance.

Contrary to what some might believe, the symbol etched to the side of his neck depicting the Ancient Vampire House of Carlevaro's coat of arms is not a tattoo. It is better compared to a birthmark, as it is evident on all children of Vampiric inheritance, to prove that they were born, not made. The history as to how this came about is lengthy, but his grandfather and all those before him were Vampire royalty, and were one of the few untainted families left. At least until Vincente Carlevaro fell in love with the Pureblood Witch, Genevieve Prince. The mark rests scarlet red against his skin and has been known to revolve. Dante loathes any comparison to Voldemort's Dark Marks.

He has dimples on both sides of his cheeks that emerge when he smiles.

[ Personality ]
Dante is very selective in who he chooses to grace with his presence and even more so with his vocabulary. Upon first meeting Dante, he seems exactly as one might envision a Vampire: quiet, aloof and mysterious, with a remarkable ability to express severe disappointment despite never having once moved his face. It isn't that he doesn't have much to say, as it is that he is careful with his words, or finds some people undeserving of having anything said to. He believes in the value of words and in saving his breath, of thinking, before speaking.

Two and a half years trapped in a body he could not control was quite frankly, Hell. It was like waking up in a grave, where everyone he'd loved and cared for believed he was dead. He felt the horror in the eyes of The Skinner's victims - many of which he knew, many of which were his friends - like dirt being piled over his coffin. Yet he could not scream, or flee, or part his lips to apologise, over and over again. And no matter what he does now, he can never return the lives he's taken. It taught him what a gift it was just to be able to clasp the arm of a friend or to say sorry for bumping into someone. Some part of him fears that if he overuses the gift, it will be taken away from him again.

Yet beneath the armour of cold steel, there lies the Dante he had been before his will was taken from him. Defiant and ambitious, Dante Carlevaro did not allow anything he wanted to escape from his grasp. He lived by his own laws, served his own rule. He's disappointed in many aspects of himself from before, especially that he would waste those years Hogwarts being a thorn when he could have done so much more. Yet he misses the ease of which grins came to his lips, that he could jump head first into trouble and worry about the consequences later.

The Dante now is a tad more cautious, but he's quick to take risks for the cause. He lives for the Resistance, and will serve it till his last breath. He is more determined than he ever was, but now instead of channeling his energy into meaningless duels, he channels it into defeating the Unmentionables. Yet, if nothing else, his ordeal taught him the value of life, and he will not kill without cause. He believes in second chances, and holds the leader of the Unmentionables accountable more than he does his followers, some of which, he is certain, are not there of their own volition. He will neither fight one who is disadvantaged or treat his duelling partners as recklessly as he did before, enemy or otherwise. Just because they're at war, does not mean they need to become savages.

Dante is kinder than he seems, more empathetic than his immutable expression tells, and more patient than his past might dictate. He has a sharp tongue and will respond to rudeness and foolishness with quick, razor wit. Although he does not seem the type to tell jokes, he does, in fact, have a sense of humour. It can certainly be rather sarcastic and jokingly arrogant, but Dante is not the stone wall he might appear to be. Though one would only know that if they were brave enough to test the waters.

[ History ]
His mother evaded the sun almost as well as she did questions. His attempts at determining the identity of his father were met with shovelfuls of food and an abrupt change in topic. Eventually, he learned not to bother. Although he did not inherit his mother's sensitivity to sunlight, she was nonetheless an immutable figure of his life. They woke to the magical village of Mirto in sundown, located on the island of Sicily in Italy, and retreated before the sun grazed the horizon. Because of this, he rarely met others his age, but he didn't mind, because those few he did meet, he found painfully obnoxious.

Being the son of a Duellist came with some perks, such as access to the strangest individuals to roam the Wizarding World and spells a boy his age should not be learning. The letter that arrived when Dante was 11 was met with a slight raising of his lids and a grunt of affirmation when his mother asked if it had come from Hogwarts. That same Summer, he returned to Mirto to find a letter that said "Went to All-England Wizarding Duelling Competition. Be back soon."

But she had not, in fact, come back soon. She did not come back at all.

They informed him of his mother's "honourable death" during the Wizarding tournament by owl. He'd merely blinked and wrinkled his nose at the letter, lips pursed in the manner his mother had deemed his "face of disapproval." Dante had never been outspoken enough to inform her that it was not his expression of disapproval, but his expression of helplessness. Of heartbreak and weariness, that his mother was injured, yet again, and that this time, she would not recover from it.

A Ravenclaw in his situation might throw themselves into their studies, a Gryffindor to his friends, a Hufflepuff their worries to the wind, but he was a Slytherin, through and through, and he coped with his grief by being the biggest nuisance Hogwarts had ever seen, or at least one of its greatest. Though he'd had friends, for their sake, it might have been better if he hadn't, for a good influence Dante was not. That he was not expelled is a testament to the patience of Hogwarts' teachers, rather than any innate rationale they might have seen from him. If nothing else, he proved right any who believed apples did not fall far from their trees.

Dante had his mother's gift for duelling and her feverish drive to fight till her dying breath. By brute force or blunt intimidation, he became the leader of Hogwarts' Duelling Club, and it thrived under his iron fist. Beyond his dedication to picking fights, Dante had few others and attended his classes as if they were optional. He certainly would have failed had he not received a very generous lump of extra credit from his Professor in Defence Against the Dark Arts and special consideration for being the Duelling Champion in his final year. Although in hindsight, they likely felt sorry for him.

He'd barely graduated when he met the person who would change his life, but the years that followed would slip into a whirlwind of red, searing pain, of his and his victims. Perhaps that man had seen in him a talent and a ruthlessness others had attributed to rebelliousness, but in truth had hidden some inner savagery. He remembers nothing of the face of the Legilimen who brought him to his knees, but he recalls the pain. The endless, piercing agony that drenched him, devoured him, that silenced him until the Imperius Curse dug its nails into his mind and held him still.

And he learned that time moved on, even when he did not.

2.5 years. 869 days. 20,856 hours. 1,251,360 minutes.

Lost. Trapped in a body he could not control, committing crimes too horrific to name; cruel, despicable things that have haunted him every day since. All 1,648 days of it, and the day he was found was the worst day of all.

There was nothing different about the Hogsmeade Massacre. His body had slaughtered children before. But here they'd found a fighter. An angry, writhing girl who screamed, kicked and bit despite being outnumbered by the strongest Dark Wizards in the world. He remembered her eyes, hazel, and so bright with rage and defiance that they burned like molten gold. He'd reached for her, and she bit him. The act surprised him more than the pain, and the words more than the act. She'd said his name and poured a stream of expletives like venom from her throat. "Dante, you piece of shit," she'd said, and he would remember every inflection, every curse, for as long as he lived. "I knew you were an asshole but-"

And he would never know the rest, because he'd murmured "Sectumsempra," and watched her tear to shreds. But he'd recognised those eyes, that voice, that ability to grant profanities better than any brute, the scarlett gold hair, coiled in one, small Witch. Lily Potter had been in the year level several below his in Hogwarts, but Dante had known her brothers, had even spoken to her on several occasions.

Her death offered the last ounce of willpower he needed to shatter the Imperius Curse, and he escaped the grasp of the Unmentionables to find the Resistance instead. There he found James, still holding onto the hope that his sister might be alive despite the counterarguments of those around him. But Lily Potter was dead, and Dante told him as much. He did not tell him who had killed her, only that it had been an Unmentionable.

As her death was unmentionable, as his part it in was, and the story of Lily Potter became the first to be made indelible on his body.
