When he was small Calvin's mother used to call him "sprout" as it took the boy a couple of years to grow into his height. For some time he was lanky, awkward and terribly skinny. His father believed even the smallest gust of wind would push him down. Now his lanky structure when he was younger is filled out with lean muscle from cross country, leaving the nerdy boy a shred of what he used to be. Tousled, curly, golden brown waves, bright blue eyes, and a chiseled bone structure frame his strong - yet soft face. Yet, he still has his sprinkle of freckles across his nose that darken in the sunlight. One thing that has not changed about his appearance are his thick, tortoise shell glasses.
STRENGTHSXX
XXâ„ Intelligent : Calvin has always been of above average intelligence, and his work ethic only adds to that. He excels in areas such as science and mathematics and his analytical skills are far beyond that of his peers.
XXâ„ Caring : In addition to his brain Cal has a big heart as well. He's a big softie and he really does care about his friends.
XXâ„ Encyclopedia : Cal loves to learn random information. He has quite a vast base of obscure knowledge that he feels might aid him one day in the future.
WEAKNESSES
XX â„ Addictive : Calvin has developed somewhat of an addictive personality since getting involved in drugs. He can become obsessive and frantic when he doesn't get what he needs and the boy is almost frightening to be around.
XX â„ Insecure : Having so much pressure on his shoulders has made him a bit insecure and doubtful of his own abilities.
XX â„ Anxious : Cal can sometimes get overly worked up and anxious in stressful situations.
FEARSXX
XXâ„ Heights : Ever since he was a child he has feared heights, and refused to climb anything.
XXâ„ Dependence : Calvin is realistic, he knows his drug issue can't last forever nor can he hide it forever. Still there's a fear that he will never be able to function normally again without the drug.
SECRETS
XX â„ Drugs : There's no doubt that throughout the years Calvin has been put under immense pressure by not only his parents but himself as well. His sophomore year he nearly reached his breaking point when one of his classmates offered to help. Calvin accepted not knowing that by help they meant adderall. Calvin knew it was wrong but he also knew he couldn't afford to fail.
PERSONALITYXXXCalvin is a quiet individual; a reserved young man prone to forgetfulness and the same head-in-the-clouds dreaminess that affected his mother. Calvin has always been kind-hearted, optimistic and good-natured. The teddy bear, 'gentle giant', 'boy-next-door', frankly Cal has heard them all. Granted he'll stop everything he is doing to go hop over a fence and retrieve a baseball for a couple of sad kids, at any time of the day. Kind-hearted by nature, he has always done things to make others smile and feel happy. It's infectious to others, and can almost come off as charming. At the end of the day however, to him, it's just what's right. He has a tendency to be socially awkward and clumsy, to let his emotions get the best of him. Which conflicts his character greatly as he often tries to abstain from leading with his heart. He has always been very determined with almost everything he does, and hates the thought of anything messing up his life plans. When others threaten his end goals he can become quite harsh, anxious, and blunt.
Calvin is a remarkably bright individual, considered by many to be something of a genius, though he would never use the term himself. As a child he was separated a lot from his peers because Cal never truly related to his classmates in terms of maturity or intellect. However, he is thankful his parents never let him skip a grade, he'd probably be even more detached from them than he is now. Calvin's brain still leads him more than his heart ever has making him a very calculated individual. The only time Calvin ever let him heart take the wheel is when he started to have feelings for another classmate. When it was revealed he was using him however, he completely tried to shut that part of him out. He never wanted to be embarrassed like that again.
When someone has the chance to get close to Calvin however, they will find a very interesting individual. He's very funny, something that not a lot of people know. He's witty, and bashful which almost seem strange coming from his tall stature. In the same way he is also a very artistic person, literally and figuratively. Calvin sees the world in a different way, which makes him difficult to understand, but once you can get him to open up you'll find a poetic and intuitive young man.
Calvin kind of lacks in the social department of things. His academic intelligence heavily outweighs his emotional intelligence. He's awkward and horrible at picking up both romantic and social cues. This is something he has to be guided in and it definitely doesn't come easy. It also doesn't help that he's terribly insecure.
HISTORYXXX Calvin was born to a middle-class family in Oakville, with his mother being head of the local library and his father being a teacher at the high school. He was the oldest of the Rhodes children, his sister Ellie just two years younger than him. From a young age his parents began to notice the raw talent that the boy possessed, and were determined to have their son succeed. His parents had longed to let their careers lead them outside of Oakville but to found themselves stuck in the town. They longed for Calvin to be able to make something out of himself, so the pressure began at a young age. Granted, Calvin wasn't Albert Einstein but up until middle school he handed the pressure considerably well, the content was a breeze. Although this meant he had almost nothing of a social life.
It wasn't until high school when the pressure really began to get to him. Calvin was a teenage boy, he wanted to hang out with his friends, have fun, goof off not spend hours upon hours doing homework due to his parents forcing him to take all AP classes. He got lazy with his work almost in a rebellious fashion and that's when his parent's really took control. They banned him from hanging out with friends unless he improved his grades and Calvin fell into a bit of a depression. His goofy demeanor really struggled his sophomore year but he learned to hide the pain well. Calvin also started to realize that something wasn't right with his relationships with girls, he often found himself awkwardly wanting to check out the guys as well.
Trying to refocus himself back on his grades was a struggle and for a while he felt like he wasn't going to do it. That is until one of the rather shady kids in his Biology class offered him some 'Blue Lightning" normally Calvin never would've indulged himself in drugs - but he was desperate and at his lowest. He found that after taking it, he could focus better and could finish his homework twice as fast. So Calvin never stopped, his life returned to normal and his grades were back up, his parents even let him go back to being with his friends. But Calvin was addicted. He knew he couldn't afford to stop, he was terrified of relapsing and not being able to perform as well as he had. Not to mention he had begun to take the drug even when he didn't need to study or do homework. He refuses to accept his addiction is as bad as it really is.
His parents were overjoyed when Cal got early acceptance into Yale's Astrophysics program. He's only ever felt guilty since. So he's kept it under wraps making sure his dealer is discrete and nobody knows. If anyone ever found out his life would be ruined. Calvin knows he needs help, but he can't afford to lose his future.
