Oakville, Connecticut.
Established 1776, Population 2,052 103

Welcome to Oakville, a small town located in rural Connecticut. Once a resort town on the coast, Oakville has been largely forgotten by all but the locals. Located near the misty Lake Jacobs, this picturesque village is over two hours away from the nearest big city by car. Almost all businesses are locally owned, with very few chain stores around, giving it that charming small town feel.

For the past year, there’s been a noise around town. Tones, ranging from below 20Hz to above 100kHz and loud enough for all of Oakville to hear them, have been going off intermittently. Sometimes this is little more than an annoyance to citizens, but other times it is painful. The source of the noise was never discovered, but the frequencies stopped playing a few months ago. Last week, they started up again.

“There’s nothing out there. We are all alone.”

The following Monday, students in American History, Psychology, and AP American History left for a week-long field trip to New Haven. They returned five days later, only to discover Oakville had become a ghost town. The kids quickly learned they could call each other, but that all their family and friends phones appeared to have been disconnected.

The town is surrounded by thick woods, blocking all roads in and out of Oakville. The internet and 911 do not appear to exist. There will be no more trucks driving down Main Street, delivering new inventory. There are no more police, rendering laws non-existent. From here on out, every choice sets a precedence on how they will live their lives. How will they survive? Will they find out what’s happened to both themselves and their families?

“There is no civilization here. Not until we start one.”

hello there, I'm zodial. Fairly new to the site but I've been roleplaying/coding on and off for several years on various sites. After a recommendation, I thought I would try out something I've been chewing on for a while and see where it goes. Oakville is a very plot driven role-play, inspired by the Society on Netflix. Which was inspired by the novel, "The Lord of the Flies". (Flashback to Freshman English). Every decision on how to rebuild and survive is left up to the characters, with plot drops from muah to move the story along. As for rules go →

ACTIVITY
I'd like a pretty dedicated group, just for the sake that the plot is really counting on it. After four to five days of inactivity (without any prior knowledge of your whereabouts) I'll probably send you a pm with just a "how's it going?" and if you are inactive or decide to gracefully bow out you're character might get the axe (lol). Please ask for a hiatus of you need one! It is no problem to me!

TRIGGERS
This will be a mature roleplay. We will be dealing with themes such as missing kids, violence, deaths, sex, drug use, and underage drinking. It's a bunch of high schoolers who just found out there are no more laws. Just keep this all in mind.

FACECLAIMS
All FCs must be at least 'seventeen' years old. While there’s no specific age cut off for a FC, please use someone who can semi-pass as a high schooler. A good rule of thumb is that they either look young for their age (ex: Thomas Brodie-Sangster) or have gifs of them playing a high schooler (ex: Riverdale cast, the cast of the Society).

RESERVING
BEFORE RESERVING PLEASE CHECK OUT THIS THREAD OF WANTED ROLES TO HELP SPARK INTEREST AND PLOT. When reserving fill out the small little form located below this section. You will have roughly two days to submit some form of progress (I will send a pm if I have any doubts or worries), I will not have a concrete start date until I get a better idea of who is interested.
Name:
Age:
Grade: (junior or senior)
Face Claim:
Role: (feel free to explain one from the suggested or create your own, should be a few sentences)
EC: (extra curricular activities, sports, clubs, etc)
Hex:

OOC
Please keep the drama out of the OOC (ty ty ty), it's just a place to chat, reserve, and post whatever silly memes you'd like. I will have a relations thread up soon, along with a CS.

The Oakville Courthouse

Diana took one last moment to smooth and tighten her low ponytail as a flurry of teens - her classmates - began flooding in the doors of the courthouse taking the seats of the jurors. Instantly her back straightened, and her posture became near perfect as she stood poised behind the judge's desk. Her father always spoke about how important appearances were. For him, it was a reflection of the town, one hair out of place could mean a lot being the mayor. 'First impressions are lasting Darling, never forget that'. So what was she to do if nearly half of the student body already had an opinion about her? The muted fuchsia of her her nails where stark in contrast against the cherry wood as she absentmindedly tapped a pattern into the desk, repeating her words over and over in her head. She had gone over her speech last night with Andy who insisted that she was overthinking everything. Yet, to Diana she felt as if she wasn't thinking about it enough. After all, nobody was still in their right mind, not since Monday.

It was like any other day. Her AP History class with Mr. Mackey had taken a trip to New Haven to visit the new natural history museum. The bus ride back had been rather mundane save the few spitballs flying from the back, no doubt the Jackson Twins. For the most part everyone was exhausted and Diana had spent the majority of the ride with her cheek pressed against the window staring at the trees as they passed. She hadn’t even given a second thought to how quiet everything seemed when they got back to Oakville High or how looking back she couldn’t even remember the bus driver at all. A few goodbyes and yawns later she was in her car with the heat blasting and her favorite Chopin piece flowing peacefully through the speakers. She figured it was too late enough that her parents were already asleep and passed out the second she hit the bed.

The next morning she awoke to several text messages from her peers, in her half-awaken stupor she could barely make out the jumbled mess of caps and spelling errors. Without thinking about it she rolled out of bed going about her morning routine as normal. It wasn’t until she started brushing her teeth when she noticed something was very wrong. Her mother always peeked her head in - always wished her good morning, yet this morning she found herself gazing at the door with no appeal. Diana stood until the toothpaste in her mouth became sour and she suddenly realized something was very wrong. About four hours later and with a thorough investigation they concluded that the only people still in Oakville were the few on the bus ride home. No parents, siblings, townfolk, nothing. Oakville had become a ghost town. Any phone call immediately dropped, any attempt to get on the internet was met with no connection, and even Timothy Langsten’s attempt at driving to the town over was a bust after he drove three miles - double the length to Hartford - and was only met with trees.

It was chaotic for the days following with a multitude of breakdowns and even some looting of the local stores. It was then Diana set in her father’s office she realized that something needed to be done. Regardless of how impossible everything seemed, if nobody said a word there was no doubt the town would descend into utter chaos. So she began placing flyers at every corner, and told all of her closest friends about the impromptu ‘town hall’. Selfishly she imagined that if anyone would get everyone in line it would be herself. Besides, who would want the job anyway? As if corralling a bunch of chaotic teens was the least bit appealing.

So she sat, poised as ever and for once in her life nervous. At first, she truly believed no one would show. Then she believed that no one would listen to anything she said. But she had to try. It wasn’t Diana if she didn’t try. She felt the faintest of sighs escape her lips as the first few flood of students passed through the door most of them familiar. Diana waited until everyone was set into place before clearing her throat amongst the awkward small talk and silence of the students. “Thank you everyone for attending. As many of you know I’m Diana Lindbergh, my father Marcus has served as mayor of Oakville for four years. I know some of you have many questions, as do I, and I promise we have every person possible looking into any solution or answer as to what happened. AV is working on getting the phone lines back up as soon as possible, Addison is working extremely hard to keep the clinic up and running, Edward Taylor has been kind enough to begin rationing food at the market - anyone with specific food necessities or allergies is advised to meet with him to discuss these matters, and Aaron has been kind enough to keep the church open all day for anyone seeking religious guidance. If anyone does not want to be alone in this time, some of us have opened our homes and the list can be found here. ” She took a small pause looking into the eyes of the other’s as she prepared the more distasteful section of her speech. "I ask that - well in all honesty I’m aware that some of us have taken advantage of the lack of order in our town and I express that such nonsense will not be tolerated. This is still our home, and not our new playground.” Diana took a deep breath as she finished her small speech shooting a small look to Andy for reassurance. “I am open to taking any questions you may have, as I understand that this situation has been difficult for all of us”.

Edward had gotten to the courthouse rather early, for no reason apparent to him. It was anxiety-inducing enough to watch Diana try and prepare herself for whatever ‘grandeur’ plan she had concocted for everyone. He wasn’t surprised she had immediately pounced on the option to lead them all, the girl was a lioness. So to fill the awkward time he lounged back in the rather uncomfortable chair in the juror section absentmindedly picking at the fraying strands of his tennis shoes. On the outside, Eddie seemed to be taking their near Twilight Zone situation rather well on the inside however, he was an absolute mess.

The morning after the field trip he nearly tore apart his entire house looking for his family - anyone at that point, he had almost reached the point where he wouldn’t have been upset to see his father first. His mind had gone eight-million different directions as he tried to come up with some rational explanation as to what had happened to keep him somewhat sane. Eddie’s first notion was that while he was away his father had essentially kidnapped his mother and sister, unfortunately it was the most probable reasoning he came up with. That idea however was pretty much overwritten however, when most of the town came up missing. His house had become utterly silent to the point where it was downright unsettling and he really couldn’t stand it any longer. He had stolen his sister’s ocean noise machine and found that he could now only sleep with the darned thing on. Still, Edward could only think of his sister. Regardless of their disappearance they were still somewhere, even if it wasn’t in Oakville. And if Eddie wasn’t there for his mother and sister, to protect them, there’s no telling what his father would do.

Managing the store in the days proceeding had somewhat kept him sane. When he heard of apparent break-ins already starting (which frankly he wasn’t too surprised) he immediately jumped on protecting his family’s store. After all, it was the closest thing he had left to them. So when Diana approached him asking about setting up rations, he really couldn’t say no. For one it was a smart idea, and secondly how much of an asshole would he be if he said no to feeding everyone in the town? A pretty big one in his mind. So he agreed, and spent the last two nights arranging what he called ‘little care packages’ for his friends and classmates. It hadn’t even occurred to him that others might have allergies until Diana brought it up in her little rally speech. God, she really did think of everything.

Taylor was one of the last few ones to enter the courthouse, soon followed by the rest of the people she tended to hang out with, which happened to be some of the less desirable people in Oakville. She knew that they were a tough group of people for anyone to really like, and she knew it probably gave her a bad reputation, especially with only having been in the town for as short of a time as she had, but they were people like her, outcasts and the less desirable. They somewhat made her feel like she belonged, and even safe in a bit, even if some, like the Jackson brothers, made even her own blood boil at times due to their cruelty or plain dumbassery. But for the most part, they looked out for each other, and she preferred to stay with them even if she didn't agree with their morals, or lack, therefore, as yes, even someone as rebellious and spiteful towards her family had a conscience, and lately, it had been a small voice in the back of her head that she pretended didn't exist. Their-her parents were finally gone and she had the full allowance to do whatever it was that she desired, and she took it into full effect and took it with glee. But unlike the others in their group, she kept it to a controlled level, simply having taken a few supplies and things she'd need, refusing to have taken part in some of the break-ins and anarchy that had already taken place. Taylor knew that it would be hard for people to believe she had nothing to do with it, and it bothered her slightly, but she knew the truth and that was all that mattered.

Taylor found herself with the others in the back end of the court-house, some of them sat in the last few spots in the remaining rows, and some of the others like her preferred to remain standing in the back against the wall. The others considered this pointless and stupid, some had even decided to not even go, but Taylor knew she should as a way of supporting the people that needed it, especially Diana Lindbergh. Sure, they weren't exactly the best of friends or all that close, but she respected the girl for deciding to be the one that took on the mantle, and it wasn't too surprising to Taylor seeing as she was the mayor's daughter, it'd only make sense if she was being honest. She knew that Diana being in charge would be to the annoyance and distaste to some of the others, but it didn't bother Taylor. She'd prefer it was someone that knew what they were doing, even if it was only partial, and not someone that had no idea what they were doing, that would only put them in the dirt or bring utter chaos to the town. She was lost in thought about half-way through Diana's speech as her memories went back to the day where everything changed at the mention of it. Taylor had decided to go on the field trip, well, more so she was forced to by her mother as it'd be extra credit and heaven forbid if Taylor didn't pass a few more classes. Sure, she wasn't the smartest person in the school, but she was also not an idiot. She had enough brains and intelligence where it mattered, and even more in the classes that she really cared about, but it wouldn't matter much now seeing how things had gone to shit. All that she really remembered was getting up early for the field trip and getting on the bus, and zoning out on the ride there as she simply just put her earbuds in and listened to her music, drifting off into another world until they came back to Oakville. Things had seemed quiet, a little more than usual, but it wasn't out of the ordinary. It was late and as everyone expected their parents were probably already asleep and in bed, so they all returned to their homes and went to sleep like it was any other day, and to their knowledge it was.

At least, that was until the day after. Taylor woke up to dozens of missed calls and texts from friends and even some random numbers that she didn't recognize but figured they were other students that got her number from someone they knew mutually. At first, she thought it was some prank, as it'd be easy to prank one of the newer students, as well as someone that wasn't exactly very popular or well-liked as she remained in the background as well as she could. Even though she was simply known as that loud girl in bad to most people, or the new girl on the swim team. And Taylor didn't mind it honestly, for all she knew once she graduated she'd be gone from this damn town and her family and be somewhere off where she could finally be herself, but it all came crashing down when reality hit her like a brick wall. Their parents were gone, as well as all the other students. Seemingly, the only other people that were there were the students that went on the bus, everyone else was simply gone as if they never existed in the first place. For most, it caused for alarm and worry, but for the few that Taylor ran with as well as herself, it was a small sign of freedom and excitement. No parents meant no rules, and no rules meant she finally could do whatever she wanted, and for the most part she did. The group of friends she ran with held constant parties for the first few days until it grew to be a bore, and then came to the ransacking of stores, and break-ins to the houses. Unlike most, Taylor kept to herself when it came to that, simply deciding to stay in her own house, except for maybe taking a few things and some extra food and supplies, but nothing that no one would really notice off the bat.

And now, now is where they were. In the courthouse deciding on what to do. Taylor didn't care much what happened, as long as she was left alone and no one tried messing with her or those she was fond of she didn't really care. She was fine with the shenanigans she took part in for a bit coming to an end, it was getting a bit too intense for her liking. She liked crazy, but not anarchy and chaos. Even someone like her had respect for people and liked the order, but a little crazy was okay with her. She wasn't surprised by the announcements of Aaron having the church open or some of the other well-known faces in town taking up other important roles. It'd make sense, have people know what they're doing have some role in all of this madness. Some students gave their opinions and rather rude remarks, something that was to be expected, Taylor just sighed and shook her head, why couldn't people just understand some order needed to be brought among the chaos. "I think it's a great idea, honestly." she spoke up, finally breaking the awkwardness that she felt, as well as not usually being one for crowds. "Uhm, me and Andy have also decided to open up the music hall again, if anyone has any interest, just let either of us know. Anything from teaching to playing, to simply trying to lighten a mood with music is available. Just let us know if you have any input, we'd uh...We'd like to know. Thanks." she said with a sheepish grin as she combed her hand through her hair, taking a deep breath as she went back to leaning up against the wall. Taylor knew people would probably laugh or think it'd be a stupid idea of having classes or music hall, but since music was something Taylor often found peace in, her and Andy thought it'd be a great idea. But if anyone would take it seriously, that's all that mattered. Taylor had a few other ideas but, for now she'd keep it to herself. She was thinking of making a self-defense class as she was trained by her father, but, if that became a thing only god knows what people would do with it, but with people like the Jackson brothers, maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea to bring to the table with Diana and the others, Taylor thought to herself.

There was nothing normal about what was happening in Oakville. Today, as her fingers trembled to pop open the Valium bottle. Once the impossibly frustrating top finally popped off, the soft blue pills clattered along the table, rolled around, and half of it spilled onto the floor of her mother's office at the clinic. She scrambled instantly, slid off of the chair and clashed onto her knees to try and scoop them all up before they went God only knew where. In the meantime, she stuck one between her lips, and then another, if only to calm her nerves down.

Eventually, she sat up with the orange bottle grasped limply in her hands and her bottom plopped along the backs of her feet. Addie really didn't want to walk out those doors and wander out there where all her least favorite people were waiting for her. It never helped that she hardly made friends, and her parents weren't exactly setting their daughter up for success in the social realm.

The worst part? They were gone - her parents. There was no one here to tell her what to do and when to do it. For most people that was freedom, but for her, it meant that she didn't know how to do anything without them. It was not so much that she couldn't, as she had grown up at a very early age, it was simply that she had gotten so used to waiting on them that she didn't know how she was supposed to live now that their shadows were not looming over her. So, she had been doing what she's always done best - popping some form of pill from calming to something that would help her stay awake for fear that something else might happen. Who could blame her? There were a bunch of teenagers here, and it seemed like this mysterious phenomenon left the worse of the worst behind.

The days prior have just been her cooped up in the clinic, doing this and doing that. Mostly trying to keep certain drugs out of certain hands. Not that it has gone all that well from her. She's busied her mind with inventory and reading since her new role would pretty much be making sure that no one died. To the best of her ability, anyway.

Everyone seemed to have taken on their roles, for better or worse.

Addie was one of the few that sent concerned text messaged to Diana, and that was only because she knew that her parents would never leave her home alone for longer than a day. Sometimes they worked overnight, but there was always someone home to make sure that she was sticking to the very particular schedule set forth for her. So, when no one woke her up as five am, and she had awoken to notice that it was bright as day outside, she tried to call them and got nothing. She tried the hospital. Then others called her, and more texts came in. By that time, the entire body of students that had just returned to the town knew something was off.

She never participated in parties or looting. The hospital had plenty of food. Not good food, but it was fine enough. She had told herself that things would calm down in a few days, or that maybe their families would show back up and all will be normal again. That was not the case. They were completely on their own.

The only thing she could do up until today was to stay out of the way of Dusty and Co. Alas, all good things must end and she had to shower, throw on an outfit, apply a bit of make-up for a boy that never noticed her, much less said 'hi', and run back to the clinic before the sun peaked over the horizon and the assholes were getting over their hangovers enough to wake-up.

At least with the drug slowly taking over her system, there was less chance of her looking like an anxious mess. Yet, her body was used to these things - Valium, Adderal, Focalin - all things her parents liked to 'prescribe' her to make sure that she wasn't falling even a hair strand's width beneath their ridiculous standards. She popped the cap back on, opened up her mother's drawer, and shoved the bottle beneath a bunch of papers. Then she breathed in deep, closed her eyes, and reminded herself that she just needed to get through this one meeting. Then she could come back. Maybe even run home to grab more clothes or something before that.

When the dainty brunette finally stepped into the Oakville Courthouse, she hesitated a moment. She waved to Taylor, of course. God knows she'd be scared out of her mind if it weren't for the two or three people that help with the jackasses that make her life miserable. Afterward, she proceeded down the aisle to quietly fill up a vacant seat. She, too, was early - as most of the smarter and less troublesome teens always were. Most likely trained to do so from parents that had nothing better to do that set such high standards on their children that the mere thought of being tardy was an anxiety-inducing experience.

In the peripheral of her vision, she spied Edward. That was him - the boy that didn't know she existed. Turning ever-so-slightly, she ended up looking in his direction. The moment that he noticed, she swiftly averted her gaze, hung her head a little low, and let the dark strands of her hair hide her embarrassed face.

Thankfully, Diana's voice eventually came through, and the meeting commenced. Taylor also said her piece, and Addie was content to wait until there were no more voices to be heard before standing. She cleared her throat, brushed some hair behind an ear, and put forth her offer as a gesture of kindness. There were a lot of folks having trouble trying to sleep, maybe even had serious medical conditions that could be grave or extremely bothersome without proper monitoring. She was no doctor, but she had been studying up to get into medical school, and her parents were renown medical professionals.

"As Diana stated, I am keeping the clinic up to the best of my ability. I haven't combed through any medical records, but if anyone has any medical issues that need to be addressed," she turned and looked toward Dusty and Co. since they always had something smartass to impart upon their unwilling listeners, "Actual medical conditions." Then she looked to everyone else, "You can just come see me at the clinic. I'll do my best to help where I can."

Then she sat her hiney back down and retreated into that comfortable silence.

Andy watched the people coming in slowly. Of course, he had been the first one in there, together with Didi. She had repeated the speech to him so many times, he could have given it himself. Not in the same way though. He didn’t have the same posture, nor the same gravitas that was needed right now. His eyes kept going from the door to Didi and back as if he was watching a tennis match. He made a point of not sitting in front, so he leaned against the window where the bright afternoon sun warmed his back. Although he looked calm enough, his heart was racing at twice the normal speed. He supported his friend, but he was well aware not everyone else did the same. The worst thing, and what he would never tell Di, is that he could see their point. It seemed too planned, too slick, too politically stimulated. Here she was, daughter of the mayor, looking more perfect than perfect, saying exactly the thing that needed to be said. Andy sighed.

He had arrived in the school bus like everyone else. On his way home he hadn’t seen anything strange, but when the door unlocked the silence inside hit him. His dad was always working late and classical music usually filled the hallways of the O’Neal household. He walked to the study, where he found nothing and no one. The last thing he could think of was that his mom and dad would have gone on a romantic getaway. It never really happened before, but what other explanation could there be? And of course they didn’t leave a note, Andy would be out until they got back. With a grimace on his face he went to bed that night.
Like most of his classmates he woke up to the sound of incoming messages on his phone. Seeing all messages were about missing people he concluded that if this still was a romantic getaway, it was a crowded one. He helped in the search for anyone that wasn’t on the school trip, but after the first hour he kind of lost hope they would find someone. Andy had stayed out of the raids on the local stores. Not that it wasn’t tempting. He wanted a new xbox controller for a while, and there it was. The glass door to the shop had already been smashed, so it wasn’t really breaking and entering…, just entering. He grabbed the controller from the shelf, but a minute later he put it back. He walked out of the door with empty hands, but a good feeling. He wasn’t sure how long this thing would go on, but he was sure he couldn’t get away with stealing this easily.

Andy saw the doors close and a large part of what was left of the Oakville-population now seemed to be inside of the courthouse. He heard Di clearing her throat and starting the meeting. He had given his advise on the speech, but she hadn’t heard it. Of course, with her dad being the mayor, she had more experience in these kind of things. At one moment he had decided to stay quiet. It also wasn’t right to make her more nervous. The AV remark was meant for him. He had been working on preparing the phone lines, but he had run into some unforeseen issues. None of the systems he checked had actually been broken, they simply didn’t work. He appreciated the comments he had received so far though, encouraging him and telling him he was doing important work. I will find something, I just need to try harder.

Then he heard it, the part of her speech he had been dreading the most. ”such nonsense will not be tolerated.” He was waiting for the reactions. The questions of who would be the one deciding what nonsense was, and who made her the president of regulating this. Andy knew that he would not be able to defend Di much. They were too close, and most people were fully aware of that. Whenever he would back her up, it would be seen as biased.
Thankfully the first person to talk was the least biased person Andy could imagine. As the new kid she had no strong alliance to any single person. Taylor and Andy had spoken about the music hall the day before. Quite honestly, his biggest excuse was that he wanted to play music again. The mood in town was strange enough, now imagine a boy playing a trumpet in harmony with the chaos. When Taylor mentioned his name he raised his hand in an awkward waive to the rest of the people. Waive you stupid man, cause no one here knows who the F you are. Don’t forget to smile, idiot… He stood up and explained further to what Taylor mentioned. ”We took the instruments from the school, so they are not in best shape, but they’ll surely do for beginners. Music is one of the oldest forms of entertainment, so even in this situation it could be a healthy way of dealing with our issues. You know… that and the religious guidance thing,” he mentioned while pointing in Aaron’s direction.

Next, Andy listened to what Alli had to say. In his opinion they should treat the medication in town the same way as the food. But he had a feeling all hell would break loose, or looser, if they started taking pills away.

It had taken a matter of days for Ollie's life to well and truly go to shit. The AP History trip actually hadn't been too bad. Well, as "not-bad" as things could be in his life. He hadn't thought that much of it when he'd woken up to an empty house. It was only when he read the first of the texts that he started to realise something was up. People didn't text Ollie that much. He'd made sure of that. The fact that anyone had texted him at all was surprising enough, and the subject matter just made him more uneasy.

Especially given the nightmares. Deep down, had he known the moment he'd stepped off the bus that something was up? That had to be the only explanation for the nightmares that had plagued him. Images of a barren town, of chaos ruling the streets, of them all having to fight for survival. The marked absence of the adults. But, of course, he hadn't said that to anyone else. And he didn't plan on even thinking about it all that much, let alone telling anyone else.

When chaos had started to break out, Ollie hadn't participated. He'd just barricaded himself inside the house and waited for it to pass. It hadn't escaped his notice that his... episodes seemed to have worsened either. More frequent, and more intense. There was hours every day where he felt like he was living in a dream, like nothing around him was real. His meds helped, but not as much as they used to.

He didn't know how he found himself in the courtroom. He didn't know why he was here. The continuous visual disturbances and disassociation had given him a cracking migraine, so he was seated in the darkest corner of the seating (which still wasn't dark enough) and was dependent on the strongest painkillers he'd been able to in find in the house. The prospect of stealing something stronger from a pharmacy had occurred to him, but he refused to be that person.

It seemed that everyone else had a role. But what use was Ollie going to be? As Taylor and Andy brought up the music hall, Ollie just found himself rolling his eyes. Sure, because that was really going to help everyone. Playing the violin hadn't made any of Ollie's other problems go away and he didn't think for a single moment that it would make a difference this time. He avoided Addi's gaze. He knew she knew about his medical issues, but that didn't mean he wanted to acknowledge the issue. He'd need a refill of his meds in a few days, but he really hoped that the issue would be dealt with by that point.

He slumped down in his seat a little more, scanning the room. Of all people he was left with... it had to be these. He was determined to keep up his habit of avoiding certain individuals, which ruled out what felt like half of the remaining group. How the hell were they going to get through this? How the hell was he going to get through this?

Eppie knew something was wrong all along. Dad hadn't answered her texts. He wasn't there, waiting for her, when she got home. He had already gone to sleep, she'd rationalized at the time (no matter how unrealistic that was, her dad was as protective as they came. Mr. "I'll stay up until morning to make sure you're safe."), still, on Monday night, she didn't want to believe that anything was wrong. So she let herself into the house, washed her face, and went to bed. The next morning was when she felt like her life was falling apart. She woke up, like most mornings, before the sun. But there was no smell of coffee brewing, no clatter of a simple meal being prepaired. Maybe they'd slept in? It happened on occasion, that they stayed asleep a little longer than Eppie.

She decided to start the coffee herself, toasted some bread topped with jam made from local preserves, and she waited. And waited. For the first time that she could remember; she was there, at home, healthy, and she missed watching the sunrise with her father. He never missed it if he could, their silent morning ritual. She never thought she would miss it so much, but she sat there, at the kitchen table, feeling lost. Were they sick? They wouldn't have gone out of town without telling her. Tentatively, she went to her father's room (her parents still called it the guest room, but they never had guests, and all her father's things were in there) and knocked. Knocked again, for good measure, and then opened the door. She tore the house apart, tried calling both her parent's cells, her mother's work, everything. She even looked in the shed out back. Nothing.

She took some comfort, at least, in knowing it was not an isolated incident. But she was all alone in a big house, and she didn't know what to do. She'd spent much of her time pouring over her father's field guides and her mother's maps of the county. The forest, it seemed, had grown. She wondered just how far out it spanned- but three miles of nothing but woods was a big change. She didn't understand what was going on, and while she wasn't entirely sure she wanted to, something inside of her needed to understand. If she had answers, at least, she could come to terms with it. Make peace in her mind. Maybe there was something for her, out there, among the trees. She hadn't stepped foot past the tree line, not yet. She'd spent a lot of time staring in that general direction, contemplating it, but she never took that last step.

For now, there was the town hall meeting. Honestly, Eppie thought it was a waste of time. She didn't see how it was going to be either productive or helpful. She was fairly sure she knew how it was going to go before she stepped through the doors, but she decided to hold off on judgement until after the meeting.

She stepped through the doors early enough that she could snag a seat up front, where no-one would sit in front of her, so she could be sure to see what was going on. She sat up straight in her seat, eyes focused directly on Diana: tight-lipped, singular eyebrow slightly raised. She was listening intently, waiting, absorbing what information she could. None of the content really came as a surprise, though Eppie did make a mental note to talk to Edward at some point; maybe she could at least get some granola bars. She knew that no strongly worded speech could keep the peace, not when some of the only people left seemed set of causing chaos even with real authority figures around. Eppie sighed and stood; shoulders back, head high, hands clasped neutrally in front of her.

"With all due respect, Diana, It was true, Eppie did respect Di, and Di knew it, "Exactly how are you planning on keeping the peace around here?" The and who asked you to, anyway? Was unspoken, but perhaps implied. It wasn't that Eppie didn't like Diana, or even that she thought the other girl unsuited to the task, she just wasn't the sort to sit back and let somebody else make all the decisions for her, not unchallenged, anyway. Besides, she had to wonder if that had even been thought out.

Aaron would normally be the first person to arrive at the town hall meeting if it wasn't for the back-to-back spiritual meetings with the other teenagers in town, making a schedule of who wanted to come speak with him, and somehow trying to find his sister, knowing she would try to ditch. With everyone gone so suddenly, many people who had never came to his family's church were suddenly coming. They needed advice or rationale for what was happening and Aaron has tried to bring comfort to those around him, despite him having the same questions.

The fact that their family wasn't around when he arrived back from the field trip wasn't concerning at the time. Bedtime was a strict ten o'clock for the whole family and Aaron went to sleep. He had woken up to silence. JP or Elizabeth would've woken him up, his father if Aaron was going to be late. Joanna had gone out to party so the house was truly empty. When Aaron looked at his phone, he saw dozens of messages from numbers he did and didn't recognize. Parents, siblings, any authority figure was missing.

Everything began to spiral from there and Aaron was unsettled by the situation. He kept to his schedule, trying to retain some normalcy. He kept the church alive and clean, in case his father came back and was upset Aaron hadn't completed his chores. It became more apparent something was wrong when Timothy Langsten couldn't get to the next town over. People began to flood the church, believing it to be some kind of rapture. Aaron didn't have time to process that his family was gone, because everyone needed him suddenly. People who ignored him or bullied him needed him and it was surreal.

Thankfully, Aaron made it in before the troublemakers would be stumbling through. He found a seat near the middle and he could feel eyes on him as he walked through. Aaron was a leader to these teenagers and it was equally terrifying and flattering. God has provided comfort to him in dark times so he hopes to bring that to others. Aaron sat patiently, listening to Diana's spiel and everyone else talking about their roles. Aaron looked forward to music program Taylor and Andy were putting together, having played the piano since he was nine. He then began to turn red when Diana mentioned him. Feeling pressured to speak up, Aaron stood up and tried to keep his blush down. ""H-hello. The church will be open from eight to s...seven for anyone who needs it. You can come speak to me if you need any guidance. I'm aware this is a d-d-difficult time for many of you and I am here to help you in anyway you need. The book of Psalm says, "But truly God has listened; he has attended to the voice of my p-prayer. Blessed be God, because he has not r...rejected my prayer or r-removed his steadfast love from me." I'm aware that many of you feel abandoned right now, but you are not alone through this. Again, my home is open to anyone who wishes to not be alone and feel free to c-co-cont... get with me if you need to talk. Th-thank you." He quickly sat down, embarrassed that his stutter made another appearance. No one had ridiculed him outwardly, but he knew someone was making jokes about it. He would always be the stuttering, church kid. Nothing would change that. Aaron took a moment to breathe when he heard a voice he knew all too well coming from the back. Joanna had shown up and Aaron could only hold his breathe for whatever would come out of her mouth. 'Lord, please help Joanna to be kind and compassionate to others to herself in these times.' It was common prayer that had yet to be answered.

~

Joanna hadn't planned on coming to Diana's pathetic attempt to gain back whatever control she thought she had in high school. If Aaron hadn't grilled her about attending, she would've skipped. Hopefully, the twins would show up soon and they could get high together later. Her flame of the week, James, saved a spot for her in the back, but she chose to sit on his lap instead. Joanna listened halfheartedly to Diana's speech, not caring for her nonsense. She perked up at the mention of Edward. Yes, James was sweet, captain of the basketball team, and stupidly hot, but he was also very stupid. Edward had been on her radar for the past week so she's been laying some ground work for him to notice her, it helped she got Aaron to talk up her good qualities since they were friends. Joanna became irritated when Diana looked specifically at her when it came to 'lack of order' as she called.

It wasn't a big deal in the beginning. Joanna's parents were gone and it felt amazing. She didn't have to listen to her father ranting about the 'sin' she's involved with or her mother constantly chastising her for her outfits. Joanna did miss her younger siblings, but it did feel nice to be free for a while. The partying was fun, especially ones by the Jackson brothers. It went on for days, but people can only party for so long. The looting wasn't one of her ideas, but Joanna went along with the crowd. She wasn't as excessive as some, but she needed things too. Her medication especially, which would be tricky to get since the new 'doctor' hated her.

She couldn't help but laugh, rather loudly, when she 'threatened' anyone who had participated with the looting. What was she going to do? As always, Diana didn't realize who really controlled this town. Joanna is the Queen Bee for a reason, plus she has Jacksons and Friends on demand. Someone else voiced her thoughts before Joanna could say anything and it made giddy at Diana's discomfort. What was her plan?

Joanna raised her hand, but spoke anyway without being called, "Yes, how do you plan to keep order? And while we're at it... last I checked, you're not mayor. Why should we listen to you?" A chorus of 'yeah!'s' and 'you tell her Joey!' came from the back. Diana is the last person Joanna was going to listen to. If she wants to play sheriff, Joanna's going to play the outlaw.

The only reason CJ was even here at this stupid meeting was that same reason CJ did everything. Dusty said so. He’d wandered in, ripped out the cable to the PlayStation and roused the few sleepy and hungover boys who hadn’t left after the rager the night before. Some of them were un-wake-able, and most unwilling to go along even at Dusty’s request. Which was why it was only CJ and two others laughing and jostling around at the back of Town Hall, unwilling to take a seat and act like Diana’s docile pets. God knows here Dusty had wandered off to after ordering them here.

They barely listened to Diana’s speech, thinly veiled threats hardly bothered them. To CJ coming home to find his father missing has a regular occurrence it was only the next day when the texts started rolling in that he really got to celebrate. Life was so much better without police and dickhead fathers. Of course, CJ and the two boys perked up when Addison took the floor, she was one of their usual targets, and she gave them the perfect opportunity to continue the long held tradition. "As Diana stated, I am keeping the clinic up to the best of my ability. I haven't combed through any medical records, but if anyone has any medical issues that need to be addressed."

CJ received an elbow and nudge from the boy on his left and that was all he needed to pop his hand up, calling across the crowd. “Yeah I got a burning sensation in my balls. Can I get you to rub some lotion on them real gentle, Doc?” Of course, the two boys next to him burst out laughing as if it were the funniest joke they’d ever heard.

Unfortunately she continued on undisturbed by the heckling. "Actual medical conditions. You can just come see me at the clinic. I'll do my best to help where I can." The boys with CJ were disappointed and they were happy to let it be known. One just booed her and launched his empty beer can at her head, whilst the other shouted out, ”Just sit down butterface.” All three of them laughed obnoxiously at their own antics.

CJ took the moment after to slink away from the other two, strolling over Joanna, you could hardly miss her considering the lengths she went to stand out, even standing up against Miss Oakville herself. CJ and the two boys with him gave out obligatory cheers following her reprimand.

“Joey,” He grinned sliding into the seat next to her. He ignored the hunk of man meat she was perched on as he usually did, the boys in her life were typically fleeting, while CJ and Joanna were forever. Though he did prefer seeing her draped all over random than seeing her simpering around his own brother. “Diana’s such a cunt. She needs to get laid.” He said acknowledging her previous comment to the floor, it was a long accepted fact that the Dusty/Joanna coalition always worked to undermine Diana. That was why when Joanna was running against her for class president they changed the ballot paper to read ‘Di-ck-ana’, one of their better pranks.

“You missed out last night. Got me a slab of beer for riding Dusty’s old bike off the roof.” He’d almost broken his leg too but CJ had a habit of seeing the lighter side of life, the beer itself had hardly been worth it either as his lot had turned to taking whatever they wanted.

He sifted to the side so he could pull out a joint, he lit it with a lighter and took a drag before handing it off to Joanna. “Pretty please tell me that after this we can go get high?”

Dusty sat on his own and watched with amusement as the meeting carried on. True, he’d failed every subject since third grade but he wasn’t the redneck idiot everyone painted him to be, unlike CJ. He’d been out the back of their house shooting at empty beer cans with a few of the boys when he’d gotten the info about Diana’s little meeting. Unfortunately her text chain hadn’t managed to reach him or his lot, but one of the guys had seen her flier and came in laughing about it and talking shit. Of course, Dusty had seen it for the opportunity it was, to be in on what everyone else was doing while him and his friends were raising havoc. So far he’d done alright too, watching the proceedings with a beer in hand, he’d learnt where the food and medicine (well, drugs) were being stored and doled out.

He smirked at Addison after her little speech raising a single eyebrow. His friends’ taunts were hardly scathing and it wasn’t so much that he enjoyed watching her suffer but he enjoyed the power of it. Not once had he personally taken part in her bullying, after she rejected him, all he’d done was suggest to his friends that she was lame and they’d all taken to bullying her themselves. That was the power of Dusty’s influence, and there was no better feeling than that.

But Dusty didn’t like sitting back, his game wasn’t to let someone else take control from him. There was only a hundred or so kids left, the way Dusty saw it he had all the muscle, thus he had the power here. Diana could say whatever shit she liked and it wouldn’t change anything.

“C’mon,” Dusty didn’t yell per se, but he made sure he’d be heard through the out the hall as he rose to his feet. He made his way toward the front with a slow confidence. He knew no one in here had the balls to challenge him outright, and if they did he knew how to shut them up. “Princess Di here is doing her best.” He grinned towards Diana as he reached her side, throwing an arm around her shoulders. His voice full to the brim with sarcasm and mocking.

“It’s not her fault she doesn’t know how to have any fun. Look, I reckon we should all show her how it’s done. How about,” He paused and looked Diana over, in all her uptight, bitchy glory, before turning back to the people waiting. “I got a bottle of whiskey for whoever manages to loosen up her rusty, unused lady cave.” Of course the one friend he had who wasn’t currently laughing yelled from up the back, ”I’d volunteer! I reckon she’d be into kinky shit.”

With a mean laugh Dusty headed for the exit ready to make a leave. But he paused at the exit, now surrounded by his buds. “Oh, though I don’t have the bottle yet. I was just going to go to the store now to pick it up.” He said, leaving the stealing part of the action heavily implied. Then he winked up Diana, “Though if that’s not tolerated, you’re welcome to stop me Miss Oakville.”
