Setting

WyMarch is were almost all goods travel through to get to there destination, thanks to a large port, its central location among the human cities, and the large amount of organizations devoted to moving goods. There are several thousand merchants and traders that go through this centralized location for barter, trades, treatment, medicine, weapons, armor, crafts, skills and knowledge. This is the central human capitol if you will, where everything starts. For it to go anywhere else, it is manufactured here, and more than likely ported here as the first locations for all examination of exported good. This is more than likely where you go for you to begin learning about any one thing, and the central district is where you would start. There are 3 quadrants; the Residential being the first, the Central District being the second with the inclusion of the port that is so large it separates into four districts, and the Lost Districts being the 3rd.

The first quadrant, opposite of the port. But where the river that runs through the entirety of Wymarch start. This river starts underground, and then flows above to ground level once inside and past the outer barrier of the city that separates the desert and beast-land. This is directly next to the barren entrance from the outside where two large guard tower's sit. This is a place where all who enter, start and look for lodging. It is not uncommon for many to enter here and go looking for light from a lantern, only to run into one of the many Shadow blobs that mark the streets, like ink running freely throughout the city. These are something to be wary of whilst in the city. Although you will find all sorts of crafts, and people here, the swindlers and manipulators that await you inside the first district are of common species.

This quadrant has bustling activity. But most people here are of the kind to just live, in the first few districts. Since this is the 'Residential Districts' there isn't much else but to move on to the next districts to find that which you are looking for. The largest library in the human land is here at Wymarch, in the aristocrat district, which is the 'Learning' district. Otherwise known as the Central District. This is the district that lies with another passport and business related checkpoint required entry port. You cannot access beyond the 12th district without having one passport for 'inter-city' activities, and a reason. The second someone tries to go beyond those wall that separate the residential to central district, they will be hunted down and killed if they do not have proper papers and authorization. The12 districts that surround the Central district, they vary in population density, architectural style, and wealth of the citizens. Each usually has a small market.

The central district houses the biggest market of them all, and is home to the centralized parts of the government. While on the ground, this section is capable of taking off and hovering, at the severe expense of magium. This is something of a conspiracy however, because most people do not know if this is true. Many of the central district have their own doubts about this very concept. However, there are rumors of this being false. But the acclamation's of this and the falsity thereof cannot be proven. This is all hearsay, but the government says that this is possible.

The port that connects to the central district, is very much a entire couple of cities of it's own. Housing it's own independent merchants, sellers, and small branch of government since the scale of business and the scale of exports and imports is so large. They require there own branch of security and their own means of having to manage income of monies. This is a very independent branch of Wymarch that has kept the city prosperous and luxuriously unified. Or so everything seems. This port houses all manners of crime, but of such class and level that it is highly undetected, even by the specialize security, which some hypothesis to be in on everything that happens. But they are not privy to everything.

The outer most parts of Wymarch are abandoned districts that house other things and creatures, striking these districts into fantasy and fairy tail stories as to why they are abandoned. These districts make up the third quadrant. Some theorize that there are Shadow Nexus's that harbor these areas uninhabitable. Some say that there are older species of humans and beast that are taking residents. There are even whispers of there being housed criminal organizations of freelance rebels out in these districts. The only ones that know for sure are it's inhabitants and the ones that roam out but never return. These district was abandoned long ago for unknown reasons. Few dare to trespass there because of the large amount of Shadow in the area. Many hypothesize there is a Shadow Nexus in the district as well.

As Wolf followed R'Nieth, himself in a constant state of disgust at the peoples blatant abuse of nature, and ways of seeming to guard against it. Everything from the houses made of stacked log, others being made of log and stone, and the constant feel of density and the sound that kept bombarding his ears made Wolf all the more appalled.

Stepping forward to follow his friend, Wolf stepped in what he thought was the substance that hung in containers below the street lamps. He believed that the humans called this vile substance oil. They seemed to burn it in everything. Wolf reacted to this by violently attempting to shake the goop off of his foot. After a moment or two, it had splattered on the ground, coming back towards a center point.

As Wolf and R'Nieth got within two buildings of the Smoking Lamp tavern and inn, a man lit his lamp. From the black goop held in the reservoir came a 'nails on chalkboard' screech. Wolf's hands shot over his ears as he tensed up in such a way that showed obvious pain.

The man shot off from his place, running away from his lamp as fast as he could. What Wolf and R'Nieth did not know was something that every human knew. If your oil screams when you light it, run away and hope that doesn't alert the others of its kind. This human was not so lucky. From the alleyways in front of him walked out to soldier-like, black silhouettes, their blades already drawn. The human did not have room to stop before his head began to roll on the ground.

Wolf, and only three humans, watched in horror. The body was then covered in the black substance. The one thing that told Wolf that this was not oil was the guards saying "Damn Shadow. Lost another idiot to it." Wolf then did a small rite to the departed, drawing a small rune and giving a 15 second chant in a language not even R'Nieth would know.

As Wolf got up from his rite, he noted the fact that the only humans who were even mildly bothered by his presence where the guards, who gave the two beastmen the nastiest looks possible, as they passed. This all was increasing the discomfort that Wolf was feeling. He would be bringing this news back to his people.

R'Nieth looked on as everything happened and was immediately put on guard, He covered his ears with the screech, and put up a small barrier in front of the two, right before the explosion and attack. He was not familiar with things like this, people being nonchalant about the way other's died...we was not someone who didn't care, but held a tight leash on his emotions...all except curiosity and anger. Those two were released with certain triggers. R'Nieth noticed that the people who spoke of the shadows seemed to be content with the existence of the creatures, and did nothing about the appearance or disposal of them.

R'Nieth looked at the tavern, then looked at the guard. R'Nieth walked over to the guard, who hissed at his appearance.

"Excuse me sir, but could you explain to me what that was?"

R'Nieth could tell this was going to be a long night, so he wanted to know what he and Wolf were walking into.

The guard looked at R'Nieth only to say "Fuck off, you scaly tree sucker!" His pose showed that of ready to fight, and his eyes showed a distinct hate. The way that he walked off was that of a noble passing up a pauper in the street, with a little extra spit.

R'Nieth would then feel someone tapping on his shoulders. The man would say, before R'Nieth finished turning around, "Need some questions answered?" The man he would turn to see was wearing dirt colored clothe pants and t-shirt. His hair was the color of an old persons, but his pale skin and excited expression spoke far differently about him. On his back was a sword, with a courier's pouch on his hip.

Before R'Nieth could ask the question, the human continued. "I am Soron Bal Taren, the merchant who can get you nearly everything... even answers." He bowed with a level of flair to his movements.

Wolf watched to pale human approach R'Nieth. The man smelled of happiness and cheer, but looked ready to arm himself if threatened. His approach was a silent, yet cheery, walk over without fear of the beastman. He seemed to be either more open or more informed than most humans.

R'Nieht was fairly offended by the remark the guard made, he noted that particular response and was wandering what to do next if he was going to gather intell and lodging. When the man touched his shoulder, and spoke fairly quickly about answers. R'Nieth turned around ready to fight, but not suddenly, for if the man posed a threat, R'Nieth would have sensed it the instant this man was within 20 feet of him. However, R'Nieth couldn't smell very well between all these new wondrous and odorous smells. The reeked and were very disgusting, or rather very pungent. Either way, his sense of smell was going haywire, even if he couldn't show it. What was worse was his eyesight, although he could see for a couple miles, half of that relied on his sense of smell. R'Nieth was growing more and more frustrated the more time they spent in this place. It was going to start showing, if he could not find some answers on how to lodge, his top priority right now. Thinking of....

"How would you, or rather, a beastman find lodging around here? I smell dozens of taverns and inns, but they all look unfriendly. From this reaction of the guard I take it we are not wanted, but from some of the crafting techniques of the clothing and building I can see we are around...in some form. So to double up on that question, how also, would we find a liaison to show us around?"

R'Nieth asked as he was staring and analyzing the man. Sizing him up, gauging his aura with his nose and eyes. "I suppose you being a merchant extraordinaire will allow you to answer with you being the answer to both questions?" R'Nieth responded in kind but without a smile...snakes have no smile..not really.

"You would be hard pressed to find an innkeeper who would be hostile to you for longer than it takes the sound of gold to hit his ears. Most humans would rather have advancement and comfort over trees. And before you ask, humans don't mind a place like this because are senses are far duller than yours. I can tell you right now that only humans built any human city, but who am I to know what was going through their minds when it was done. And I cannot provide you lodging as, alas, my home is barely big enough for one. Best way to keep the bad people at bay." Soron spouted off almost naturally, taking note of the fact that the beastman didn't smile, but looked kind over the rest of his body. It both put Soron off and made him only more interested.

The sensory input was finally getting to Wolf. As he began to accept his environment, his senses began to return, and with them came waves of pain. The scents were overpowering, the sounds migraine inducing, and the disruption of magic agitating in all aspects. Now Wolf was being forced to use his eyes, a tool built into him broken.

The world around Wolf was blurs of color with rapid pulses in every direction and no feeling of distance. Everything was close. Everything was far. Everything was here. Everything was there. All was a blur, and nothing could be defined. What made it even worse is that the colors would often blend into indistinguishable patterns, only to lead to greater confusion.

Wolf leaned on the wall next to him, relying on his only remaining, functional sense... touch. His legs and arms wobbled as if he was drunk, and he looked no better, his eyes fogging over and his irises getting wider than shrinking and repeating.

R'Nieth did not liked being told what he could, and could not do. But the information of lodging was all he needed. For starters, if what this man said was indeed true, then all they had to do was walk in an pay. That would get them a room. Second, this man was saying that their was not connection of anyone other than human having built the city...he would be lying. One would only need look around to notice. But this man was human, how could he possibly know what a beastman's technique was? Or what thier crafting looked like? Hmph. Something was not right here. But R'Nieth would keep a close eye on thier new acquaintance.

"Since you were kind enough to allow me that information. I shall grace you with my name. I an R'Nieth Volger of the Volger family, you probably don't know of my legend, or my family. But nice to make your acquaintance." R'Nieth said with said nonchalance, but respect. He did not expect his family name to win him any points, all though his families crafting skills were known throughout the kingdom, he was still a beastman. R'Nieth had an edge on him with everything in general...but...

R'Nieth turned his head, looking at the previous spot of the explosion from the thing called a 'Shadow'. R'Nieth has heard of the legend, but it was all fairy tales where he was from. He would hold off on the questioning.

"Anyways, this here is..."

R'Nieth was going to introduce Wolf, but his eyes glazed over, and he started to fall against the wall. R'Nieth caught him and took his arm to help him lean on him. It was especially hard because of the large backpacks they were wearing, but R'Nieth tried anyways.

"Help me get him to an inn now!" R'Nieth yelled, his senses heightened and him eyeballing a Tavern that was the closest. It read The Smoking Lamp Inn, R'Nieth hurried toward it. "Hurry towards that inn."

"Hold on Wolf, I got you."

"This place is wrong. So many things are wrong. They have gone so far as to wrong the land. It is so deep." Wolf said in a sort of groggy way, his mind being scattered by the sensory input. The journey to the Smoking Lamp was filled with the mass of fur and muscle not being able to go in a straight line, disoriented with every step that he took.

The Smoking Lamp Inn matched its name very well. The walls were covered in lamps that were burning a unique fuel that gave off more smoke than they were meant to, while the smell of food shot out from the kitchen. It was mainly meats with the faint smells of alcohol and fruit, and the occasion yell was not foriegn to the kitchen.

"A room is 10 gold a night." Said the innkeep as he saw R'Nieth nearing the counter. Soron stood outside the door, knowing that he didn't deal with the drunks very well. Nor did he take his alcohol peacefully, as it brought on rage for him and he didn't know why.

R'Nieth was happy to pay the gold, he handed over 30 gold, intending to stay for a couple of days. He was about to complain about the sudden lack of Soron's presence, but was not put off, for he had his own worries. R'Nieth understood what it meant to have to worry about someone else's problems, so he would not pester him on the subject.

"Thank you very much. Where do I head to?" R'Nieth saw the clerk point to the corner of the room, where there seemed to be a winding hall that had a stack of staircases. R'Nieth was handed a key and an envelope, the envelope seemed wrapped in a peculiar way. Which R'Nieth did not have time to examine.

"Hold on Wolf, your going to be ok." R'Nieth half dragged, half carried Wolf into the hall. He had looked at the key then, that was in his supporting hand. It read 312. Wolf would have to be carried up three flights. R'Nieth decided to call upon his inherent animal strength. He took a moment to breath, at the bottom of the stair case. He drew upon his strength, able to now pick up 10 times his weight, temporarily. He used it all, picking wolf and the heavy pack up, onto his shoulder. He climbed the stairs three at a time. The further up going, the farther away from sound they seemed to get. The smells were still strong. But they may be do to the random filth, sex and grossness happening in the halls and on the stairs, drugs being administered to patrons.

R'Nieth reach the 3rd floor and walked down the hall. He noticed the pack that Wolf had on was touching the ceiling, he could do nothing about it. But he reached the room 312. After a winding walk and confusing roaming of 2 minutes time. He put Wolf back into the original position on his side so they could fit through the door. R'Nieth opened the door, expecting filth to the ceiling. But he was surprised to see a neatly cleaned room, with enough room to fit a troll in. The place was rather big. R'Nieth would wonder about this later, realizing that their was two beds. He placed Wolf onto it, after removing his pack.

R'Nieth looked at the sweating Wolf, he used his small affinity for the elemental magic he had towards water and gathered the sweat into a ball above his fist. R'Nieth went in to the next room where there was a bathroom. He dropped it into the contraption that seemed to have water filled already into it....that was weird. R'Nieth hurried back. He saw Wolf still as rock, R'Nieth performed a healing spell, and coated the room with a shield. Much like the one he used for thier camp. The smells stopped being so strong, and the sound even dampened. This should help. R'Nieth went to work on getting to food prepared, some soup would do well.

R'Nieth started preparing soup, using his pack utensils and wear to assemble it.

R'Nieth looked at the envelope that was handed to him, he had dropped it where he threw the keys on the counter next to him near the bed. He would observe that later.

Now able to think without complete and utter pain, Wolf began to slowly awaken off the bed, grabbing for his bow immediately. The patting from his hand was followed by a thump from when he fell, still slightly disoriented, barely standing up. Wolf placed his hand upon the wall as the haze continued to lessen, freeing him from its grasp.

"I think coming here might have been a bad idea. Unless you would happen to have a viperrose leaf." Wolf stated, staring off into the wherever.

R'Nieth decidedly pulled out the requested leaf. R'Nieth had every herb from every beastland region. The price of the way he used to deal with the world around him was that he got into very many methods of unsavory combat. Many leading to him severely injured or him doing the same to someone else. Now outside of the very fact that he kept it in an insulated pocket dimension, it was safe to say that all of his herbs were readily available and fresh. \

"Yes." He handed over the leaf and started explaining why Wolf was wrong.

"This was not a mistake, we are here to learn and we will do just that." R'Nieth was determined to find answers about his father, and this should be a good place to start.

"I am sure that I said this was a bad idea unless you had a vierrose leaf. You do, so its not. Still, sometimes one must dull their senses to truly be able to sense everything." Wolf said as he took the leaf and began to suck on it. It was obvious that he didn't much like the flavor, as he tried to avoid it from touching his tongue.

"Did anyone say anything about this 'Shadow?' It is the last thing that I can remember being mentioned." Wolf asked, his head at a gradual tilt, still sucking on the leaf in his mouth. He wondered what would make humans so nervous, as it seemed they were not afraid of what happens when you ruin nature. Or maybe they were just blind to such things.

R'Nieth thought about it it was incorrect to assume that the shadow was something to be feared simply because it inhabited the same territory. No, the reason was in the small clues. obviously this was not the first occurrence with the lamp. The fact that they would even mistake the thing for lamp fluid meant the it was of the same color and density. However, the thing screamed, so that meant it felt pain. So it was a leaving creature.

"Obviously, the common occurrence of mistaking those 'shadows' for lamp fluid is common. What must also be common, is the creature itself being seen throughout the city in other forms. I don't know for sure, but as soon as the screaming started, everyone panicked. This must be a sign that the occurrence is not limited to lamps. It's common enough in other ways as well."

R'Nieth knew that the most effective manner of learning more about the creature, if it truly was a creature, would be to find a library book, or someone who knew about it. This would prove to be difficult without recon. We would need to find someone with the info. Maybe Soron would know.

"I concede that we recon to fins more information about the place, and it's inhabitants, foreign or otherwise."

"Finding someone with more knowledge than us might help a little." Wolf said, finally spitting the leaf into a trash bin, noticeably less sensitive to the worlds extremes. "Right now my head feels like a jumbled mess. Can't quite get all the memories after we entered the city, or their order for that matter."

Soron

"I can't give you that much for it. What you are asking for is outright outrageous. If you don't lower your price, you might never sell your wares." Soron spoke, with an aura of sense to him. The man he was speaking to, a small human with an extremely high opinion of his own work, would simply not listen to reason. Soron couldn't tell exactly why he was trying to help this man, but he was none the same.

To the other humans passing by, the action Soron was taking looked like a group of businessmen trying to rig the game somehow. That was part of living in a transportation and trading hub, there was always at least one person trying to tip the scales. In this case, Soron was far from trying to trip them in his favor. Of course, he could also find someone who would pay more than what the little man was asking for the idol. Then again, Soron could find someone who would give their spare summer home for a piece of quality dirt.

"It is well worth a quon and three ravi." Spoke the little man in his own defense. "I would have to say that it might be worth, on the high end, a tou and 53 ravi."

"I would not be opposed to telling you the events up till now. If that is what you wish. Because it would help if we had a plan. I have a plan, but I have no idea if it will work. However, I would need leave you for some time, and come back with hopeful information. Would you be opposed to this?" R'Nieth had planned to do some recon, and a bit of interrogation in order to find out what he needed. Whom to trust, whom not to trust. These things seemed essential, next to the inhabitants of the city and the ways humans operate, thier currency system. All of this seemed important. If was well known knowledge about what was used for currency, but not the worth. He intended to find these things out, and quickly.

"I shall go find some information. I don't have informant here, but I have reputation everywhere. Even here. All the traveling I did before I met you, and the bounties and assassination I executed was whispered to all parts of the nations. I just am known and described as something different. A bit more sinister. Maybe I tell you someday?" R'Nieth pick apart his bigger luggage and came away with a small pack that slung over with one strap. It was his traveling pack that had all basic mission items.

"I shall be back in the morning maybe. If I have enough information, I'll be back tonight. Attack anyone that comes through that door that isn't me. Or, if they don't come through the door, then try not to be surprised. It may be a friend of mine, we often enter through other means."

R'Nieth hoped that he would be more recovered by the time he got back. The spacious room was of two parts, half of it gave way to the kitchenette and bathroom, and the rest seemed to be the bedroom and living quarters. He passed through the kitchenette, and down the hall. To the front door, he exited. Casting a couple of spells along the way for extra swiftness, and silence of step. He was to become one with the shadows once again. Darting down the hall, he used the window at the end of the hall that was open, and jumped onto the roof of the building next door. No one would have seen his dashing movements out the window, nor his landing, just shadows moving swiftly or nothing at all. R'Nieth always ran extremely low to the ground when he got this way. It was rather fascinating to watch if you were to even get a glimpse of this stealth mode.

.........................

Jag Green

Jag was waiting outside in the hallway, waiting to see movement from the two that entered into the inn. He had been shadowing the two for some time since they entered. But he was very, very careful about what he did and how he did it. He was hugging the shadows, pretending to be one of the many drugged out citizens that were using Smog to get the new fix they desired. Smog was unfortunately nasty due to it's toxic nature. Music like a hallucinogenic, but infused with the properties of something like methamphetamine. It kept you high for days, and the worst part was, it was toxic, so you would have random violent episodes of seizures and hallucinations of the vivid sort. Sometimes at the same time. There were many other distinct characteristics of the drug, for one, it was used by means of a gasmask connected to a Smog tank. It was also colorless, despite it's name, that came from the later adding of chemicals to the Smog Duex. The sad part is, the original formula was used for creating artificial fumes to run through and get rid of pesticides. Which later was used for fuel.

Jag's thoughts rambled on as he observed a figure emerge from the room. He could not recognize or see it. It was hooded and cloaked. It dissipated a second later like smoke in the wind. He switched on his infrared to make sure he was not seeing things. He did not see anything put others in the hallway, and what looked to be writhing shapes on the floor near the door the figure emerged from.

"Hmph, Interesting."

Jag gathered up himself, and stalked off. Relenting to set up surveillance using cameras and listening devices near and inside the room. He had his ways of getting into the room, even if he wanted to use the front door, without alerting the beastman that bunked inside.

Much like a hallucinogenic, but infused with the properties of something like methamphetamine.

Soron was now walking down the street. His attempts to talk some sense into the other merchant were far from successful. So, now that the other could not see how buisness worked, Soron was walking through the dark alleyways. He didn't notice that he was stepping through something until it made a small hissing sound. Soron stopped, turned, then looked down. He was in a black, oil-like substance. The one reason that he never carried fire down these alleyways. Now, no longer feeling threatened, even though the goop was hissing, Soron continued walking towards his home.
