Cal-Dera-Ban, a world home to two different and distrustful species. Attempts to bridge the gap have been made before, but the assassination of diplomats threatens to make this one's failure catastrophic. Far too much now hangs in the balance.

Introduction

Cal-Dera-Ban, a world with two intelligent species related in biology but distant in space and trust. One, called the Caleth after the sun Cal, is energetic and outgoing, and full of quirks and vibrant simple joys. They wear dress in simple clothes with bright colors, and their buildings are full of light; they're afraid of the dark, because their vision goes to almost nothing in it. People the Bani are quiet and private, not exactly aloof but definitely reserved, and their society is bound by large number of traditions and rites. They seem very mysterious to the Caleth because they're nearly nocturnal - they can see just fine at night, but during the day their vision is as bad as a Caleth at night - and because their speech is full of metaphors and allusions that are neither necessary nor sensible to those unaware. They don't care too much for practicality, and wear what is considered extremely formal attire by the Caleth daily, in dark shades that obscure the wearer in the shadows. Despite the Bani emphasis on form over function and on tradition, they're the more advanced of the two – knowledge is sacrosanct to them, almost as much as tradition – while the Caleth are more physically adept. Between their biological and cultural differences, and some degree of xenophobia on both parts, they barely interact.

Well, okay, they want to. The Caleth who aren’t so afraid of the night are curious about the Bani, and the Bani view learning about things as a religious duty. But so far, all attempts at establishing any sort of relationship beyond occasional trade has failed as the two fail to reconcile their differences enough to talk. So when the Bani invoke an ancient tradition and send one of their princesses to meet with a Caleth noblewoman – that she had to be female being a point of confusion – to talk until some understanding is reached, it’s seen as a radical but not unwelcome attempt, and many are hopeful until the diplomats are found assassinated.

Well, okay, not really. Their deaths were faked once the actual nobles escaped the assassins, but no one save them and their targets knows this. With a spell preventing people from recognizing them, they find themselves suddenly without allies and on the run from unknown forces who really, really don’t want their peoples interacting.

Well, okay, not entirely without allies. Money goes a long way, as does persuasiveness and an interesting story (and the attire to back it up). But can these ladies and whatever help they can find track down the attackers and reveal them before the situation gets even more dire? All-out war seems their goal, and neither civilization could survive it. Will they avert it?

That’s up to you to decide.

Toggle Rules

The rules here are simple, really.

  1. Read through the introduction. It's short and you'll need it.
  2. Whichever race you play, play that race. This goes more for the Bani, who are further from humanity, but the Caleth aren't just humans that light bright things. Make them your own characters, but in line with what makes sense.
  3. Feel free to make up parts of the setting and backstory. Party's looking to hire a ship? Make up an old friend who's a captain. Exploring a new area? Add an interesting fountain, a dangerous bar, a scary forest, whatever.
  4. I'd like one of the noble slots, to facilitate acting as a narrator, but I won't insist on that if others want them.
  5. Be excellent to each other.

Re: Of Gold and Grey

"I'm sick of this prison-life I lead. I just want to be unchained." You forgot the 'to be' part.

Re: Of Gold and Grey

Um, so actually I'm unsure what you need me to do...

Re: Of Gold and Grey

Ah, I missed WildSky's character submission because derp! Approved.

Re: Of Gold and Grey

Lol, point taken. cx
Must've forgot, just hold up. I'll finish it by the day's close.xP

Re: Of Gold and Grey

Whatever you prefer/can find. :) I'm not picky!

Makenna's character is up and approved. (Though she is missing a verb in her description-y quote thing! *nudge nudge* )

Re: Of Gold and Grey

Are the pictures supposed to be anime or real people?

Re: Of Gold and Grey

@Wildsky: Why would I mind? Submit away, yo!

@above: Sure, is fine. Which race was your assassin going to be, btw?

We could start this with four, but I think it'd be better to have at least five. That way it's the two princesses and then three others, which seems a good mix to me. Anyone else have an opinion on the subject though?

Re: Of Gold and Grey

I'm sorry but it'll take me longer to submit the character. Hopefully I'll get it in before the weekend. :)

Re: Of Gold and Grey

Mind if I make a character? I'm thinking he'll be a Caleth soldier. It'll be the first time I play as a dude, though, so I hope he'll be believable.

Re: Of Gold and Grey

Got it, thanks! I look forward to seeing your characters. :) I'll probs be asleep before either of you submit them, though.

EDIT: Descriptions of both races available in the Places section. Which isn't really a sensible place for them, but there isn't really a sensible place and it's the least weird.

Re: Of Gold and Grey

Character section.

Also, I'll do the assassin thing and you can have the princess if nobody else wants her. :)

Re: Of Gold and Grey

Assassin who later joins up with the group? Sure, that works! It could be a little tricky to make believable, but not unworkably so. So go ahead and submit a character sheet! EDIT: Which race were you thinking of, if I may ask?

(You're also welcome to be the princess, but I kind of had my eye on that slot because being one of the princesses will help me as narrator, and the Bani are probably the trickier of the two races to play and I created them so I know them best. Basically, if someone wants to use that slot, they're welcome to, but if they'd be open to something else it'd be appreciated. I don't want to step on anyone's toes!)

Also, added the Caleth territory as a place. The Bani territory is coming next, then some specific places within each. The territory descriptions double as more in-depth descriptions of the races, so please read them!

EDIT: ...Where will I see if someone submits a character? I'm actually not sure and feel dumb now.

Re: Of Gold and Grey

Coolio, I'll probably post tomorrow. :-)
Oh, and I'm Makenna.

(Well, it's my pen name. cx )

Re: Of Gold and Grey

I would be very interested in doing this. I would really be up for being the Bani Princess if at all possible. Maybe one of the paid off assassins who failed and is now on the run after failing, she finds the group. I like option two better if you would be okay with that. :)

Re: Of Gold and Grey

Ah nice! *waves excitedly* Person! Yes! Good! Hi! I was worried I did everything wrong ever and no one would join. Also I kind of think the Bani are going to be the more popular race, heh...

I realize I neglected to put a character template, so I'll do that now. You're welcome to change or ignore it as you see fit though!

Re: Of Gold and Grey

I love this. :) I'll do a Bani. (It seems more along the lines of my usual and best characters than the Caleth.)

Of Gold and Grey

Well, here's to hoping I haven't screwed up my first attempt at running an RP here. Wish me luck (and join!) please!

(If you're concerned about the lack of detail so far, don't be. That's more to do with the fact that our group composition will strongly influence the beginning, and also that I prefer to leave nonessential parts of the setting open-ended.)
